Gala for THE GIRAFFE February 22, 2011

Fifth Third Bank is proud to be the title sponsor of the Naples Zoo. Strong community involvement is important in creating a bond between us and our environment. We accomplish more by working together. That’s why we sponsor the Naples Zoo. Like you we know what it takes to reach your dreams and we’ll do our best to help you achieve them.

Looking to the Future It’s still hard to imagine that it was just one short year ago we hosted Jack Hanna to help bring giraffe to town. Our tall, magnificent new friends made their debut in their Preview Exhibit in July. The herd’s arrival helped set an all time attendance record as we welcomed over 300,000 visitors. Since becoming a nonprofit in 2005, we’ve opened five feature exhibits in five years, gained a 40% increase in attendance, and grown the wildlife collection, conservation programs, and guest amenities. But that’s just the beginning. This year we embark upon the most ambitious project since my parents, Larry and Nancy Jane Tetzlaff, first introduced wild animals to the garden in 1969. Funds raised tonight at ZOObilee 2011 will help create Kiwa Ranch, one of the most innovative exhibits ever conceived in the zoo field. On land never before seen by visitors, guests will explore an abandoned African ranch overtaken by wildlife. Lions lounge on the veranda, leopards perch in barn rafters, monkeys wreak havoc in the kitchen, and a giraffe herd wanders the grounds. Up close experiences and surprise encounters will engage visitors in imaginative new ways. We plan to set new standards of animal exhibitry. The funding and construction of Kiwa Ranch will be a multi-year process, but as you’ve seen before, we won’t sit idle in the interim. Many other exciting plans loom on the horizon including a free-flight area for tropical parrots. For all of this, we are in debt to you, our supporters. Because of you, I know we have a wonderful future. With appreciation, David L. Tetzlaff Executive Director

The Giraffes Welcome You, the Board of Directors Welcome You, and I Welcome You! This is a night to celebrate and to dream. The Zoo is celebrating its fifth year as a nonprofit and we’re dreaming BIG! It is the dream of the Naples Zoo Board of Directors to make Naples Zoo the best small zoo in the country. What does that mean? It means that creation of our Kiwa Ranch themed area will get the attention of the conservation community and continue to put Naples on the map. Tonight take a few moments to consider what it means to our community to have a zoo at all – much less to have the only accredited zoo between Tampa and Miami. What is it that sets our community apart? Is it our beaches? Our boating? The golfing? Maybe it is our people – people with a history of foresight and determination to do something special. Here’s your chance to make a lasting contribution to that legacy. Dream with us as we make a better future for the community and for wildlife.

Ray Carroll Naples Zoo Board President

Welcome From The Event Chair! Dear ZOObilee Friends, On behalf of the entire ZOObilee Committee, I am pleased to thank you for your support and welcome you to ZOObilee 2011. Prepare yourself for an evening of adventure and fun. Planning for ZOObilee began last spring with an all star cast of very talented volunteers and staff that have worked to take you “into Africa.” You will find surprises throughout the evening. Setting the stage for ZOObilee were two events this fall. We are very grateful to our friends at Culinary Concepts who sponsored the Zoo Crawl and The Jolly Cricket for their special evenings. They really helped us to kick-off ZOObilee 2011. I am very proud to be part of the Naples Zoo. The citizens of Collier County value their Zoo. It is a true community treasure. Working with the Zoo over the past year has reinforced my admiration and respect for this organization, its leadership, and volunteers. I would also like to recognize the exceptional staff who make the Zoo spin on so many levels; it is amazing watching them work. All share the same passion – they want our Naples Zoo to become the best small zoo in the country. I can tell you first hand that the plans for Kiwa Ranch will take your breath away. Tonight we are pleased to share with you these exciting plans. Your tickets and the live and silent auction purchases all go toward creating Kiwa Ranch! So enjoy yourself, everything you do tonight will benefit our Naples Zoo. I also want to recognize the many corporate sponsors, live and silent auction donors and numerous friends all listed in this program. Thanks to their generous support, ZOObilee is truly a fundraiser for the Zoo. Thank you again for your support. We are glad you are here to help celebrate the Naples Zoo and meet our National Geographic Emerging Explorers! With much gratitude,

Gail Garratt ZOObilee 2011 Event Chairman

Our Special Guests Luke Dollar, PhD Luke is one of the world’s leading experts on the endangered fosas of Madagascar. A National Geographic Explorer, Luke divides his time between teaching, research, and conservation and development programs. He also manages the Big Cats Initiative for National Geographic, a new and ambitious international action program to halt the decline of big cat populations including lions, cheetahs and tigers, through their natural ranges. Luke is a professor at Pfeiffer University, Adjunct Professor of Ecology at Duke University, principal investigator for the Earthwatch Institute, and founder of the Carnivore Conservation and Research Trust. He also serves on the World Conservation Union’s small carnivore specialist group. Mireya Mayor, PhD Fulbright scholar, National Science Foundation Fellow, and anthropologist, Dr. Mireya Mayor has reported on wildlife and habitat issues to worldwide audiences. An amazing feat for a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader who couldn’t join the Girl Scouts as a little girl because her family thought it was too dangerous. In spite of this, Mireya grew up to become the first female wildlife correspondent for National Geographic Television’s “Ultimate Explorer” series. For over a decade, she’s done everything from exploring remote jungles teeming with venomous snakes to diving with great white sharks. She studies critically endangered lemurs and co-discovered a new species. She is also a host on the new Nat Geo WILD channel. Shawn Heflick Following a childhood filled with the exploration of nature in rural Ohio, Shawn served in the military where he volunteered for duty in Central America to experience their tropical wonders. Much to the dismay of his fellow soldiers, he trekked the jungles collecting boas, scorpions, and lizards. Shawn earned a B.S. in Biology and completed a Masters in Conservation Biology and travels around the world researching and photographing the natural world. Shawn lives in Florida where he tracks the invasive population of Burmese pythons in the Everglades, serves as President of a Conservation NGO out of the Amazon Basin of Peru, and hosts Nat Geo WILD programs. Patrons Party Lynn Sherr Renowned broadcaster and journalist, Lynn has covered a wide range of stories, specializing in women’s issues, social changes, and investigative reports. Lynn joined 20/20 as a correspondent in May 1986. Prior to her assignment at 20/20, Lynn was a reporter and news feature writer for the Associated Press in New York, as well as a correspondent for ABC NEWS. Her national and international reports have earned her Emmy and Peabody awards. Lynn is the author of numerous books including Tall Blondes, a highly praised look at giraffes. Lynn is a founding patron of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and a Past Trustee of Wellesley College (her alma mater).
