Our lead veterinarian, Dr. Jeffrey Noble from St. Francis Animal Clinic, has identified key equipment to enable the greatest numbers of procedures to occur at the Zoo.

The Professionals Who Provide Our Wildlife Care Today’s zoo keepers perform a critical role in animal conservation and education. Even today, however, the work of a zoo keeper is still commonly misunderstood. People who love animals and want to work in the Zoo frequently say that "I'll do anything - even clean up after the animals." This is the equivalent of wanting to work in a hospital and saying, "I'll do anything - even be a nurse or doctor." Indeed, the keepers have one of the highest levels of responsibility. Most keepers in accredited facilities like Naples Zoo have science degrees from universities or even colleges that specialize in training zoo keepers. After all, they are responsible for the complete care of some of the planet’s rarest animals. And for college educated workers, it is a job that challenges physical stamina. They work outdoors in all weather and on weekends and holidays. They scrub, they shovel, they get dirty – every day. They introduce new animals. They provide extra care for sick animals or newborns. They prepare diets and feed. And they absolutely must work in “safety mode” every day because the animals they love are capable of harming them. Beyond all this, keepers provide behavioral enrichment for their animals to keep them physically and mentally healthy. They train the animals to station at specific locations or present various body parts for health inspections, blood draws, and other veterinary care. They must carefully monitor and observe the rare wildlife in their care. They enter behavior and health data in daily logs. They cooperate with other professionals around the world to provide the best care for the animals. And then they communicate with the public through our Meet the Keeper Series and other public presentations. Above all, they need patience and flexibility for the public, each other, and wildlife. Zoos serve as a window to the natural world. Education at Naples Zoo Understanding the global challenges affecting wildlife and people, Naples Zoo brings its unique resources to reach the broad audience of families. The goal of the Zoo’s Educators is to help guests understand that we all have great power to change the future for people and wildlife by what we purchase, how we live, and who we support. This means that while we want guests to learn that tigers are keystone predators from Asia, we also want them to know that purchasing fair trade, shade grown coffee can help tigers as that coffee’s certifications means it wasn’t grown in tiger territory on illegally clear cut land in national parks. This also means that education at Naples Zoo looks different from many similar institutions. And based on research and our history, that’s by design. Naples Zoo does not limit its programming to a subset of children in a classroom experience. Nor does it advocate just exploring the Zoo and gardens. Why? Research shows even the best wildlife habitats are viewed less than 30 seconds by the average guest. In addition, less than one in ten guests read the educational graphics. While recent research does show the positive impact from even this experience with live animals, the Zoo’s programming aims at reaching the over 100,000 children that visit each year as well as their chaperones, parents, and grandparents. How? Live presenters. A three year study done across the nation in large and small zoos and aquariums reinforces the irreplaceable impact of a person. Likewise, the Zoo’s founders (Lawrence and Nancy Jane Tetzlaff a.k.a. Jungle Larry™ and Safari Jane™) demonstrated this for decades. So while we offer interpretive graphics and monitor technology trends, Naples Zoo focuses its resources on the proven success offered by live presentations. Foundational to all this is that a zoo visit is driven by the desire to spend a fun day with friends and family. Entertainment is absolutely crucial. If presentations are not enjoyable, the recreational aspect of a zoo visit will disappear along with the bodies and minds of millions of potential conservationists. And so much like William Shakespeare provided his audiences a character they could look to for how they should respond to the latest plot development, entertaining zoo educators are able to build connections with Zoo guests. Once that connection has been made, interpreters can model their own passion in order to help guests consider their own reaction to a variety of conservation issues. And when it is done well, our biologists and wildlife ecologists can lead guests down a path to both a more reasoned and passionate understanding of the natural world as well as positive steps they can achieve to leave a healthier environment for the next generation – and feel great about doing it.

Safari Canyon Open-Air Theater Zoo founders Lawrence and Nancy Jane Tetzlaff, a.k.a. Jungle Larry™ and Safari Jane™, combined film footage and still images shot on four different continents with living animals through live presentations and television. Through these experiences, they gave millions a greater appreciation of the natural world. To this day, adult visitors knowing the ZooTetzlaff connection tell of the childhood impact from seeing the Tetzlaffs at their school, at various Ohio theme parks, or on television. Safari Canyon replicates the best of those experiences by blending the fascinating information and wildlife footage of a nature program with the thrill of experiencing those same animals live and up close. Alligator Bay Feeding Tourists and new residents of Florida have a strong fascination to see these giant reptiles. Because of this there are many alligatorbased attractions and an abundance of misinformation about the alligators. This program fulfills a common desire of Naples Zoo guests to have accurate information including safety and legal concerns involving this now abundant animal. While Alligator Bay itself allows guests to safely see alligators in a natural lake environment and shows them how apparently vacant waters can contain large alligators, the lecture and feeding challenges many common myths around the alligator and provides guests information they can feel good about sharing with their communities. It also allows guests to see the typically placid creature in motion and to hear about both the real and exaggerated risks involved in being around these stealth predators. Education Jungle Larry™ and Safari Jane’s™
Snakes Alive! From a copperhead to a cottonmouth, venomous snakes fascinate and often frighten us. Because of this, staffed designed the program as an adjunct to the Safari Canyon shows in order to allow guests more time to ask their many questions about reptiles and especially venomous snakes.
At this activity, venomous trained staff help guests better understand a number snakes and other reptiles. Each day offers different snakes and other reptile species like Gila monsters or a young Komodo dragon. This is designed to be a more engaging experience than a reptile exhibit because the animals are actively exploring the fresh environment. And it's more casual than the formal show so interpreters and guests can take their time interacting during these 30 minutes. Equally important, this time provides exercise and enrichment for reptiles. This educational program is named in honor of the Zoo's founders, Lawrence and Nancy Jane Tetzlaff, a.k.a. Jungle Larry™ and Safari Jane™. In addition to their other achievements, they spent decades helping children and adults overcome their fear of snakes as well as understanding the beneficial role reptiles play in nature. During World War II, Tetzlaff milked thousands of snakes for serum that was made into medicine. Today, his son, Naples Zoo Director David Tetzlaff occasionally steps in as a presenter of this exciting program. Education Meet the Keeper Series Throughout day, guests are invited to select animal exhibits to meet the professionals who care for the animals. Through these informal education programs guests learn not only about how the species exist in the native habitats, but also gain insight through insider information about how the individual animals they see are cared for outside the wild. Guests also see the animals in their naturalistic habitat setting at a very active time as they relate to their keeper. Behavioral enrichment is frequently orchestrated to be introduced at these times so the animals are not only active because the keeper is present, but also because they are engaged in natural behaviors. The Meet the Keeper Series provides guests the opportunity to hear the information they want to know because they ask the questions. After a short presentation and background on the exhibit and its animals, Meet the Keeper becomes an open forum for questions and answers. The basics are usually first: what the animals eat, how much they eat, and how long do they live. Guests then further discover how zoo keepers safely provide the needs for dangerous predators. In addition, they may find out how keepers maintain all of the zoo animals' activity through behavioral enrichment programs. Guests will also have a better understanding of how zoos strive to preserve species for future generations and the difficulties that confront their mission. Guests may also discover how they can personally get involved in conservation in the wild. Primate Expedition Cruise Guests approaching Shoreline Trail in the morning hours frequently hear the melodic calls of the primates living on the islands of Lake Victoria. At the dock, an expedition guide welcomes guests aboard one of the guided catamarans for a fifteen to twenty minute cruise. Soon they are gliding towards tropical islands to view their inhabitants in natural environments. Guests see representatives from the main divisions of the order of primates including monkeys, apes, as well as the lesser known prosimians represented by the lemur family from Madagascar. The majority of these species are now classified as endangered in their native lands. As the catamarans float next to the islands, the expedition guide narrates the interesting details about these fascinating animals and the places they live. In this natural environment, over 200,000 guests a year observe primates without any solid barrier. The expedition guides who pilot the catamarans provide interpretive information on behaviors or programs that are currently occurring on the island as well as conservation issues affecting these species in the wild. The care of the primates including the means of feeding, watering, and protecting them from the weather are also offered. The excitement of traveling by boat and seeing the primates moving about the islands in this natural atmosphere creates the emotion of observing animals behaving naturally in the wild. Since lemurs live on several islands, information on how to help these endangered species through the Madagascar Fauna Group is also offered. Habitat Designs $5,000

Ratels of South Africa Recently, Naples Zoo had the extraordinary opportunity to welcome three ratels, also known as African honey badgers. So tough are these solid-muscled creatures, the South African army named its infantry fighting vehicles “ratels.� And they are just as equally cunning. Their dramatic coloration and long claws complete the picture. We expect these rarely seen and active species to be the surprise hit of the future Kiwa Ranch region in the Zoo. Prior to that, a habitat will need to be constructed in the open space in Lagoon Loop near the South African lions and zebras. The display will be created with a long-term vision for future small Asian species as this space becomes Coastal Asia in the Master Plan. This donation will create the design and illustrations to help fundraise for that habitat.

South African Lion Breeding Program $15,000 Once thought to be immune from the challenges that faced other cats from the fur trade and traditional Asian medicines, lions are now in crisis. Lions have lost 80% of their recent historic range and are completely absent in many nations they formerly roamed. Through our national accreditation, Naples Zoo has the honor and responsibility to care for some of the rarest species on the planet including the krugeri subspecies of the African lion.
Habitat Expansion Currently, the Zoo cares for two South African lions. The breeding of these rare cats is overseen by the Species Surival Plan速 (SSP) coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. As our two cats are brother and sister, the Zoo is currently awaiting a transfer recommendation from the SSP coordinator to exchange one of these individuals for an unrelated lion. To prepare for the upcoming breeding program and the hoped for infusion of cubs, the current habitat will be expanded by 3,000 square feet. A donation of this amount can provide purchase and installation of this addition.
