It’s time to get the pool summer-ready for the hot months ahead.

t’s probably been a few months since you dipped your toe in the water and your backyard pool might be looking more green than gorgeous. It might all seem too hard to tackle, but you can get your pool set for summer in no time. If your pool is looking really scummy, it’s a good idea to call in an expert to get it into shape, however, most home owners can get the pool ready on their own. Here are the steps on how: 1. Skim the surface. In summer it’s a job you do every day or two, but in the winter months the pool net has probably been gathering dust. Brush off the cobwebs and get skimming to remove leaves, bugs and other unwanted items from the water.

Clean out the skimmer basket – you might need to also give this a good clean with the hose. 2. Get the pool vacuum into the water and let it go to work. As there has probably been some algae and calcium build-up over winter you will probably have to brush the walls to get rid of this. Choose a brush that is appropriate for your pool walls – you don’t want to scratch or damage them by overzealous cleaning. Cleaning the walls is something you should also do regularly throughout the year as part of your regular maintenance regime. 3. Check the pool f lter and replace. There are many

different types of f lters available and how often they should be replaced depends on the type you use and the amount of time you and your family are in the water. Your local pool retailer can help with advice on f lters. 4. If your pool is heated, check your manufacturer’s instructions on any maintenance required. 5. Grab a pH testing kit to test the water’s acidity/alkalinity. This is given as a number from zero to 14. You will want to aim for a reading of about 7.4 to 7.6. The reading you get will determine how much and what sort of chemicals you put into the pool. Keep on top of these all

throughout the year. If your water becomes too alkaline (so, goes over 7.8) it will become cloudy and calcium can build up. Too acidic (below about 7.0) and the water can become corrosive, damaging parts of the pool. Take your pH test results into your pool supplier to get the right chemicals to get your pool back into balance. 6. You will lose a lot of water during the summer months – both from evaporation and splashing. As you are doing your weekly pool clean, check the water level – you want to make sure it doesn’t fall below the skimmer as this can damage your pump. Top it up with the garden hose.

Many pool experts recommend a pool is super-chlorinated – or shocked – regularly. Shocking your pool involves adding a large amount of chlorine to get the pool back to normal chlorine levels. When you’re using your pool a lot in summer, sun cream, cosmetics, sweat, body oil and other contaminants such as bird droppings and dead bugs build up and create what are called chloramines, which interfere with the pool’s chlorine levels. Shocking the pool removes or destroys these wastes so your chlorine is working to kill off algae and bacteria rather than these foreign bodies. A regularly shocked pool stays cleaner and less prone to becoming cloudy.

f your kitchen is looking a bit tired there are many things you can do to brighten up the room without embarking on a full-scale renovation. Repainting a wall or two and choosing new light f ttings can help, but you might decide you want to go a step further. Replacing your door handles and taps is an inexpensive DIY job that can transform your room. Shop for your handles and taps at the same time so they complement each other – this will provide a sleeker look. The door handles are the easy part – just unscrew the old ones and

pop the new ones in. But the taps are a little trickier. Still, it’s a job you can knock over in an afternoon.

Here’s how:

Most taps come with everything you need to install them, but while you’re at your local hardware store getting your new taps, pick up an adjustable shifter or spanner and some screwdrivers. Before you begin, turn off the water at the mains and then turn on your taps, draining any water that is left in the pipes. The trickiest part is usually removing the old taps. This is when

the right tools make life a whole lot easier. Turn your taps into the on position – this will make it easier when you are trying to remove them. Start with the f rst tap by taking off the cap – your screwdriver comes in handy here – then remove the handle and the other parts of the tap until you get to the spindle. Then remove the spindle and you are ready to install your new tap according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Turn the water back on at the mains, and then run the water into the sink to clear the pipes. And you are done!

A small outlay yields big results

ever underestimate the importance of an entry door. Many renovators face the same problem – a dated and weathered entry door leading to a dark and uninviting entrance to the home. The solution is an easy one – replace the existing door with one that has a large frosted glass panel, f ooding the entry with natural daylight, without sacrif cing privacy. You can spend thousands on entry doors, and considering they are the f rst aspect of your home people will see, it’s easy to justify the expense. But an affordable option is to opt for an inexpensive door and dress it up with your

choice of door furniture instead. Replacing an existing door with one of the same size is a relatively simple process and people with basic carpentry skills should be able to handle it.

STEP ONE

Measure the existing door and buy a new one that is roughly the same size. Choose one that is made for external use. It should be of solid construction at least 40 millimetres thick. If the existing hinges on the previous door are not suitable to recycle, grab at least three 100-millimetre brass butt hinges to hang the door on.

STEP TWO

Remove the old door, and keep it as it will make a handy template. Place the new door across two saw horses and place the old door on top of it. If they’re not exactly the same size, line up the old door with the top of the new door and drag a pencil line across the bottom of the new door, where it will need to be cut. If you need to remove a substantial amount of timber, it’s better to remove equal amounts from the top and bottom until the new door matches the size of the old. Do the same for the sides if necessary. If there is only a couple of millimetres to be removed, use an electric plane

but allow more if you have thick f oor coverings.

STEP THREE

Using the old door as a template, mark the position of the hinges on the new door. If you’re not using the same amount of hinges as the old door, calculate the new positions and mark them on the door. Place the new hinges face down against your mark on the edge of the door. With the centre pin hard against the face of the door, mark around the hinge with a pencil. Mark the depth of the hinge on the face of the door. Cut the area you have marked out with a chisel, then make sure the hinge f ts snugly in the recess you’ve created. Drill the holes and

then screw the hinges to the door.

STEP FOUR

Place a timber spacer on the f oor to allow for the correct clearance, then place the door at right angles to the opening. Fit the door to the existing hinge recesses from the old door. If you’re reconf guring the hinges, trace around the hinges attached to the door on to the frame and you will have some more chiselling to do. Place one screw in the top hinge and one in the bottom and make sure the door f ts correctly. Then f nish screwing the door to the frame.

Just make sure you have the correct-size hole saws and spade drill bits to suit the kit you buy. If your door is plain, you can now dress it up. Head to your supplier and check out the door handles. These can really add some style and impact to your door. Finally, when painting or varnishing your door, don’t forget the top and bottom edges. This is where the weather can cause havoc and swell your new door in no time.

t’s one of the biggest decisions a renovator will make – which kind of showerhead to install in the bathroom. DIY in a day A great little DIY job is replacing the silicone around the bath. Here is how you do it. 1. Remove the old silicone. If you bath is enamel, use a razor blade to strip back the silicone. If you bath is a new plastic or polymer product you will need to take more care and use a scraper suitable for plastic. A razor blade will just damage the plastic. Once the old silicone is removed, give the area a good clean. 2. Next run some masking tape along the tiles and then the rim of the bath, leaving a gap of about 5 millimetres. 3. Now it’s time to apply your new silicone sealant. If you’ve never used a silicone gun before, have a practice on some cardboard. You’ll need to run a line consistently and smoothly. Pushing it ahead of the gun rather than dragging it makes for a better f nish. 4. Wet your f nger and run it along the sealant to ensure a smooth join between tiles and bath. 5. Remove the masking tape while the silicone is still wet to ensure the edge is nice and smooth. 6. Now that you’ve done this little job you might want to reseal the shower. Good luck!

Beat the heat As the mercury rises there are simple ways to protect your home, and your family, from the heat.

1 Check your insulation – a well-insulated home is up to seven degrees cooler in summer than one that is lacking in good insulation. Check the R-value of insulation you buy – it measures the material’s resistance to heat. The greater the R-value, the better the energy savings.

Windows are the weakest point of any home when it comes to heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Stop the sun from getting into your place with shading from the outside. Heavy curtains and good-quality blinds are also a must in reducing the heat in the home.

Seal up any gaps with weather stripping products. It’s surprising how much heat enters the home through gaps and cracks, which are a particular problem in older homes. Sealing these gaps, which may be under doors and around windows, will help keep your home much cooler.

Get composting

et the kids involved and create a compost bin this summer. Whether you buy a bin or create a frame for your compost yourself, you’ll need to decide where to place it. Opt for a well-drained site that gets good shade (a site in full sun will dry out your compost). Start off with a thick layer of course material such as heavy leaves, straw or mulch. On this you can place your kitchen scraps and smaller garden clippings. Then place on some damp newspaper. Then repeat with another layer of leaves, then scraps, then newspaper. Ensure your layers are reasonably moist. Get the garden fork into the compost to aerate it once a week.

This is an important job as you don’t want your compost to get mouldy. Serious gardens will often have a few bins on the go at different stages of decomposition. You can add all sorts of kitchen scraps to you bin, such as tea leaves, coffee grounds, dead f owers, egg shells, fruit and veg peelings, fallen leaves, even hair. But your compost won’t like meat or dairy products, fat, glossy magazines, bones, bread or animal droppings. If you f nd your bin is attracting pests or mice, keep it covered and whenever you place food scraps into the bin, cover with a layer of garden clippings or soil to discourage the pests.
