Did you know April is national Autism Awareness Month?

This week’s insightful feature story by journalist Linda Read delves into exactly what autism is and how we can all help to be more accepting of neurodiversity at school and work, and in society in general.

We have come a long way in understanding autism and there are wonderful organisations that are making a huge difference to the lives of those living with the disorder.

Linda speaks with two Sunshine Coast experts who share some great tips and advice when it comes to understanding autism and how to make everyone feel included and accepted.

Also in this edition, we have some fun (and free) things to do with the family during the school holidays. Turn to page 16 for all the details.

Our health feature is packed with great information and advice and, if it’s real estate you are interested in, look no further than our property pages.

I hope you all enjoy some family time over the break and hopefully the rain subsides so we can get outside to enjoy some beautiful autumn weather. Enjoy the read!

POLICE OPERATION TARGETS CRIME HOTSPOTS

Extra officers will be deployed in an effort to prevent offences, stop re-offending and increase community safety.

Fly in-fly out specialist officers will be sent to Queensland crime hotspots as part of a new police operation aiming to reduce repeat offending.

Operation Whiskey Legion will start in Ipswich and Logan, near Brisbane, before moving to other regional areas in the coming weeks.

Specialist unit officers will combine with local police targeting high-risk offenders and identifying future crime hotspots under the rolling operation.

Vehicle theft, property crime, robbery, assault and domestic and family violence are among the crimes being targeted.

“There’s a message to those offenders: there’s nowhere to hide,” Police Minister Mark Ryan says.

“QPS will be out and about, surging its capacity, using its intelligence to

find where people are, what crimes they’re committing and take the appropriate action.”

The operation will help expand initiatives including Bring the Beat, where a mobile police station can be deployed to an area at the request of the local community.

Premier Steven Miles says flying in extra officers to high-offending areas has been trialled in recent months, but the operation is a statewide expansion.

“Operation Whiskey Legion is all about injecting extra police when police intelligence suggests that crime is increasing or about to increase,” he says.

“It’s about using those extra resources to intervene early to get offenders before their offending escalates, to prevent crime where possible and to make sure the community feels safe.”

It marks the first initiative under Acting Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski, who took over after Katarina Carroll resigned recently.

“We will continue tackling crime from all angles to ensure the community is safe and feels safe,” he says.

“Communities can expect to see a surge of police in their area as part of rolling operation deployments in hotspots across Queensland.”

Detectives and officers from all squads, including major crimes, will be deployed to the operation at times.

However, it won’t impact their

“Whiskey Legion is all about injecting extra police when police intelligence suggests crime is increasing”

investigation capacity.

“This will be very much managed as we go forward to make sure that the resources we deploy are appropriate to what we need to address and are prioritised in the right way,” Mr Gollschewski says.

The operation will be constantly reviewed for what is effective and what can be adjusted, he says.

Two major operations aimed to crack down on crime in Queensland are already underway, with Operation Whiskey Unison and Taskforce Guardian focusing on youth crime.

The latest data from Whiskey Unison revealed more than 11,300 arrests in the past year, with more than 4100 of those being children.

LIFT MINIMUM WAGE ‘TO ADDRESS GENDER PAY GAP’

Lifting the minimum wage will help chip away at the pay gap between men and women in Australian workplaces, the federal government says.

In its formal submission to the Fair Work Commission’s (FWC) annual review of minimum and award wages, the Labor government says women are disproportionately represented in low-paid and award-reliant jobs.

Roughly three-in-five award-reliant employees are women and they are still more likely to be working in lowerpaid industries.

“Increases in the minimum wage are likely to decrease the gender pay gap and increase the incentive to enter the workforce or work more hours,” the submission reads.

“This may, in turn, raise the participation rate for women.”

The minimum wage is $23.23 per hour or about $45,900 a year.

The FWC is required to factor gender equality into account when reviewing and setting minimum wages. Australia is making progress on closing the gender pay gap, with the 12 per cent difference at the moment the lowest on record and well below the most-recent peak of 18.7 per cent in November 2014. – AAP.

No long shot Did you know?

Giraffes are 30-times more likely to get hit by lightning than people. True, there are only five well-documented fatal lightning strikes on giraffes between 1996 and 2010. But due to the population of the species being just 140,000 during this time, it makes for about 0.003 lightning deaths per thousand giraffes each year. This is 30-times the equivalent fatality rate for humans.

Quote of the week

“There is nothing like a dream to create the future.”

– Victor Hugo, French poet and novelist.

Chainsaws were first invented for childbirth. The concept was developed in Scotland in the late 18th century to help aid and speed up the process of symphysiotomy (widening the pubic cartilage) and removal of disease-laden bone during childbirth. It wasn’t until the start of the 20th century that chainsaws were used for woodchopping.

Embracing diverse behaviour

A growing network of support services is helping Sunshine Coast people, diagnosed as having autism, to navigate life’s challenges and ultimately shine by being accepted for who they are. WORDS: Linda Read.

Cooper Munro, at 16, is learning to drive. While this may be a perfectly ordinary milestone for many teenagers, it’s cause for a little extra celebration for Cooper.

He was diagnosed at age four as having autism, which his mum Claire Gilmour says caused their lives to take a “bit of a detour”.

That detour led her and Cooper to negotiate the world from an entirely different point of view to that which Claire had imagined when she first became a mother.

In 2020, driven by her lived experience and a passion for helping to improve the quality of people’s everyday lives, she established Social Studio: a support provider for autistic and neurodivergent people.

The centre, now with two locations on the Sunshine Coast, forms part of a growing network of support services for people living with autism in our schools, workplaces and neighbourhoods.

This month, as the country celebrates national Autism Awareness Month, Claire hopes the campaign will shine a light on the unique contribution made and challenges faced by members of the

neurodiverse community.

She also wants people whose children receive an autism diagnosis to embrace the support that is available for them and their families.

“An autism diagnosis is not the end of the world – your child is still the same child they were before the diagnosis,” she says.

“All the diagnosis does is open up support, help and understanding. It just opens the world up for your child.

“That’s all anyone wants: for them to live their best life.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that autism – also referred to as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) –constitutes a diverse group of conditions related to development of the brain.

WHO reports that these conditions are characterised by some degree of difficulty with social interaction and communication. Other characteristics are atypical patterns of activities and behaviours, such as difficulty with the transition from one activity to another, a focus on details and unusual reactions to sensations.

Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), a national support provider, states on its

website that “autism is a condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, interacts with others and experiences their environment”.

“It is a lifelong disability that starts when a person is born and stays with them into old age,” Aspect says.

“Every autistic person is different to every other. This is why autism is described as a ‘spectrum’.”

Raising awareness of autism and neurodiversity is vital, Claire argues, to foster acceptance of people who are different, and to educate members of the broader community about how having autism can affect a person’s daily life.

“Most of the community has heard about autism, but are they actually aware of how autism can affect the person in day-to-day life – whether that’s with social interactions or with employment?” she asks.

“Are they aware of why someone is not looking you in the eye when they talk to them? Are they aware of why someone may struggle with communication, as my son Cooper does?

“He has a different speech pattern; he has a bit of an accent.

“He might not reply straight away

FEATURE STORY

because of the processing speed.”

Speech pathologist Kylie Martin, who is director of Chatter-boxes Therapy Centre on the Coast and whose work contributes to the identification and diagnosis of autism, explains the neurological process in more detail.

“Most autistic people have differences in the way they communicate socially, the way sensory information is taken in, understood and given meaning by the body (sound, light, texture, taste) and how the brain moves and thinks about information,” she says.

“These brain-based differences can make operating in the everyday world more difficult.

“What some of us might hear as background noise could be felt as loud and overwhelming for an ASD person.

“While some of us might have a variety of interests that we engage in across the rhythm of our lives, an ASD person may have a deep and fascinated interest in one or two areas.

“Where many of us are driven for social connection because of differences in social communication styles, while many ASD people crave social connection, they may be unsuccessful or misunderstood in their interactions.”

Unsurprisingly, these difficulties can result in significant challenges for people with autism, such as anxiety and social isolation, Kylie explains.

Learning in a mainstream classroom and fitting into a workplace can also be extremely difficult.

“When a person’s regulation, sensory and cognitive profile is not properly understood, difficulties can arise in the workplace and even impact significantly on everyday living activities,” she says.

Claire explains that Cooper’s own experiences in the education system continue to challenge him every day.

He enjoys being with friends, but comes home exhausted every day.

“If they’re in a big group, he can’t really understand what they’re saying because everyone is speaking so quickly and over

Kylie Martin, of Chatter-boxes Therapy Centre

the top of each other. So, he can’t break down those conversations and then process everything to then reply,” Claire says.

“So he goes, and has friends, but it’s still a huge challenge.”

Many young people with autism experience bullying, she says, which can lead to lifelong trauma. She encourages young people to “support and encourage” students in their school communities who are different.

“It’s really about education: teaching people not to get on the bandwagon and bully and ridicule, but be that hero – be that one that actually stands up and says: ‘That’s not okay’,” she says.

Among the most vital areas of support, Claire believes, is the connection with specialised speech therapists,

occupational therapists and support workers – services that have become increasingly more accessible in recent years, thanks in large part to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Kylie believes autism is not something that needs to be ‘fixed’, but a quality to be embraced, understood and, ultimately, accepted.

“Autism is not a problem to be solved,” she says.

“Rather, our role as therapists is to discover the unique and wonderful learning and behaviour patterns of the individual, help them and their significant others understand that profile, and allow the strengths to shine and work together to build skills in areas that are tricky.”

There is work to be done, however, to continue to change attitudes and improve understanding – one of the goals of the Autism Awareness Month campaign.

Kylie believes as individuals, we can all make a difference in our communities through showing kindness, compassion and acceptance.

“With one-in-36 people now having a diagnosis of ASD, we would all do well to step out of our comfort zones and our set ways of doing things and truly get to know the people living with brain difference in our life spheres, and do what we can do to be inclusive,” she says.

“Yes, there are challenges that come up relationally that we might not have the skills or capacity to deal with effectively as community members, but every human being is worthy of love, acceptance, connection, accommodation and a meaningful future.”

Claire could not agree more – and as Cooper embarks on his latest challenge towards achieving his driver’s licence, she couldn’t be prouder.

She praises his bravery.

“Our guys are not weird. They’re not strange – their brain just works differently,” she says.

“They have a different way of thinking, and interacting. It doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

“It’s just different.”

BOTTLING UP A BIGGER PROBLEM

Travellers are being warned to check their gas cylinders and be aware of correct procedures for their use, following a recent van fire.

Campers, caravanners and four-wheel -rivers are being reminded of the dangers of incorrectly using a common cooking appliance.

A recent explosion caused by a faulty gas appliance has prompted the state’s resources regulator to issue the warning.

A Mount Tamborine man suffered burns to 25 per cent of his body after a

portable gas appliance erupted in the back of his van. The man, in his 40s, did not realise it was leaking gas.

Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) inspector Paul Beaumont says the victim was lucky to be alive.

“You might think this wouldn’t happen to you, but when people go camping and there’s wet weather, they often end up using

their barbecue and gas appliances in the back of their vehicles and that’s just a recipe for disaster,” he says.

RSHQ is urging everyone to ensure they use portable gas appliances in wellventilated outdoor areas and that cylinders are secure and connected correctly.

Mr Beaumont says that if anyone is unsure whether they have a gas leak, they can mix dishwashing soap with water in a spray bottle and spray the solution onto the connection.

“If it bubbles, you’re in trouble, because that indicates you’ve got a gas leak,” he says.“The best thing to do, then, is turn off the gas and tighten the connection. If it still leaks, contact a gas fitter to check the connections.”

RSHQ also recommends checking that gas cylinders are in good condition, and that the hoses haven’t frayed.

“Hoses dry out and become brittle over time which can lead to cracks, and gas leaks,” Mr Beaumont says.

“You can also now get LP gas cylinders with new valves which have an in-built safety function that won’t allow the gas to flow unless the connection has been properly made.

“It’s a small cost that can save you a lot of heartache and prevent injury.”

For more information, visit qld.gov.au and search for ‘gas safety’.

IT’S A YOUTH DETENTION CENTRE NUMBERS GAME

Work has begun on a detention centre at Woodford after it was revealed Queensland has more juveniles behind bars than five states and territories combined.

The $627 million, 80-bed facility is set to be completed in 2026.

Department of Youth Justice directorgeneral Bob Gee says Queensland has more young people in detention on an average day than NSW, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania combined.

“I say that to make a point – detention is a necessary component of sending a message to young people that their behaviour needs to change,” he says.

Mr Gee says about 85 per cent of juveniles in our detention centres are on remand, waiting for a sentence or hearing.

Premier Steven Miles says the new facility will be a ‘therapeutic’ detention centre with consultation and treatment rooms, and education, skills development, training and cultural connection spaces.

Queensland has three youth detention centres – two in Wacol, with another in Townsville. A 76-bed, $250m youth remand centre is on track to be completed late-2024 on land owned by the Queensland Police Service at Wacol, while the government is progressing the construction of a 40-bed facility near Cairns. – AAP.

LOCAL EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE RECOGNISED

The Sunshine Coast Health Staff Awards have highlighted those going above and beyond in their fields, as appreciated by their peers.

Several of Sunshine Coast Health’s most dedicated and outstanding staff are being recognised for their commitment to excellent healthcare for local patients.

The award recipients have been honoured at the health service’s annual Staff Awards.

Staff specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology Professor Ted Weaver (OAM) has been presented with the region’s top health award – the Person-Centred Care Dr

H.H. Barney Moy Award. Professor Weaver says he was honoured to receive the award.

“I am so thrilled to have received this special recognition, and I am humbled that my hard-working and equally dedicated colleagues went to the effort of nominating me,” he says.

Sunshine Coast Health chief executive Dr Peter Gillies says he is pleased to see the honour go to Professor Weaver, in acknowledgment of his ongoing contributions to growing quality, safe and woman-centred care.

“With almost 40 years of experience, he continues to always put people at the focus of his work and promotes a culture of true respect and collaboration between clinicians and the women they provide care for,” Dr Gillies says.

“In nominating Professor Weaver for this award, his colleagues acknowledged him as a highly regarded leader, who supports and enables students and colleagues from all disciplines to drive positive, innovating change to continually improve care delivery.”

The Dr H.H. Barney Moy Memorial Shield is in memory of Dr Moy, a consultant urologist at Nambour Hospital from 1989 to 1992.

He had a strong commitment to the hospital and, in his memory, his family established a bequest to enable the Barney

Moy Shield to be awarded annually to a member of staff nominated by their peers.

Other staff were acknowledged for excellence in various fields, including medical, midwifery, allied health, nursing, administration, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and volunteering.

“We were pleased to see so many people peer nominated for these awards,” Dr Gillies says.

“We were overwhelmed with how much our staff, volunteers and consumer representatives have achieved.”

Winners of the Sunshine Coast Health 2023 Staff Awards:

• Integrity Award – Steve Alizzi

• Compassion Award – Caitlin Coppock

• Accountability Award – Amy Carey

Mark Saturday, April 20, in the diary for a unique, free, fun-filled day of cultural learning at the Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct in Glass House Mountains.

From 10am-2pm, Kabi Kabi and Jinibara First Nations people will share their culture through games, dancing and craft activities for all ages.

Visitors can enjoy ochre painting, get involved with bush food and cooking workshops, settle in for a story or purchase wares at the First Nations market stalls and food vans.

A highlight of the day will be the corroboree, featuring a smoking ceremony, dance and didgeridoo performance.

The event is held during the Australian Heritage Festival and is a fun way to build stronger relationships and unite communities through a shared respect for culture and heritage.

The precinct is the ideal place to enjoy a journey of heritage discovery.

This event is funded by Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts and Heritage Levy.

Turn it down for our dark skies

Light pollution is expected to increase as our region’s population grows, impacting the number of stars visible in the night sky, but we can help minimise the effects with a few simple actions.

It’s International Dark Sky Week, and did you know that on clear nights, we can see about 4000 stars from dark locations in our hinterland?

With this week’s waning crescent moon, it’s one of the best times to look up and appreciate our night skies.

As our region grows, light pollution is expected to impact the natural darkness of our skies and the number of stars visible.

That can impact our health and wellbeing, wildlife, local business and our

region’s character.

Everyone can help reduce light pollution by using lighting only when required, shielding or directing lights downwards and using amber lighting.

To protect our dark skies for the future, Sunshine Coast Council is proposing to establish a Dark Sky Reserve that will encompass much of our region’s hinterland.

A Dark Sky Reserve, designated by Dark Sky International, would encourage dark sky friendly lighting and bring the

community together to celebrate our wondrous dark skies.

This year, Council will launch consultation activities, inviting the community to contribute ideas and feedback to help create a plan for the reserve.

Scan the QR code or visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘Dark Sky’ to find out how you can join our Dark Sky journey.

Community groups bolster Mooloolaba’s transformation

Grassroots stakeholders offer ideas and help in planning and support for tourist town across all stages of construction.

Mooloolaba is another step closer to its foreshore revitalisation. Construction planning is progressing and two special groups are coming together to strengthen the community and businesses as the area undergoes a stunning transformation.

While the process to secure an expert construction contractor continues, Sunshine Coast Council has been working with the newly established Mooloolaba Business Activation Group and Mooloolaba Stakeholder Interest Group.

The Business Activation Group

consists of accommodation providers, representatives from tourism, hospitality and retail, precinct managers, as well as the regional tourism organisation Visit Sunshine Coast.

This group has been working with specialist place strategy and activation company Reactivate Consulting on opportunities for Mooloolaba and developing activation ideas focused on people, place, policy and events to develop a business activation plan.

The plan aims to activate Mooloolaba and encourage businesses to continue to attract locals and visitors before, during and after Stage 2’s construction, as well as

share the future vision for this regionally significant project.

The Stakeholder Interest Group is made up of a range of community group representatives and locals with an interest in Mooloolaba.

To date, the Stakeholder Interest Group has unpacked the design where members have shared information and insights with the project team, and workshopped ideas for improving and supporting Mooloolaba during and after construction.

ARINGING IN CHANGE

Jane Stephens is calling for Australia to make a connection with other countries and dial up more control over when kids are exposed to social media.

t 18, you get to vote and drink alcohol. At 17, you get to drive a car on your own. And if a growing movement gets its way, at age 14, you might get to have a phone.

That is not a typo. Fourteen. Year 8 – many years later than most kids today, with many digitally booting up well before the end of Primary school.

Noises are getting louder that those parents who have buckled under the pressure and hooked their kids up have possibly consigned them to other things too: addiction, poor self-esteem, physical ill-health and lousy sleep habits.

Former Facebook (Meta) senior manager Frances Haugen, who turned whistleblower and leaked thousands of documents exposing the inner workings of her employer, says mental and physical illness are collateral damage for platforms whose weapons are algorithms and notifications and whose eyes are fixed solely on the almighty dollar. They knew what they were doing caused harm and did it anyway, she says.

combating social media harms. In the US, a growing number of schools make ‘wait for 8’ pledges that means kids cannot have phones until Year 8. Last week, the Florida Governor signed in laws banning children under 14 from having social media accounts, even if their parents consented.

The nation’s state premiers are all for the federal government wresting back control, uniting to sing from the same song sheet last week. Queensland Premier Steven Miles says social media companies have no regard and no responsibility for the material posted or the consequences of it.

And when that means criminals have a place to boast about their exploits and children are being sickened by the high-volume, low-nutrient drivel that flows on their feed, something must be done, he says. But what?

Put a speedbump in the information superhighway? Issue fines to social media platforms for allowing treachery and naughtiness? Retrofit laws to thwart the algorithms? It has all been tried before and found wanting. Too bad the horse bolted a generation ago.

But we must explore ways to claw back some control, for the sake of the children.

Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.

CAKED IN JOY

Sami Muirhead knows we’re all feeling a little under the weather at the moment but believes she has found the right medicine to raise our spirits.

he world is topsy-turvy and a little less bright of late. Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer. It is the bleakest of reminders that cancer does not discriminate when it comes to age or money.

Meanwhile, it has been raining for 1,978,565 days (give or take) on the Coast and we are all sick of soggy front yards and foggy drives to work. The dogs are looking at me as if they may never go to the beach again and bound in the sunshine. There is a lot of pressure for glorious days when you live on the Sunshine Coast.

And we have parasites in our house. Nothing quite like the ‘P’ word to stop people in their tracks. Unfortunately, it is quite true that my nine-year-old has two parasites in his tummy and he has been sick since October last year.

We have seen a myriad doctors and tried a truckload of medicines. He has had MRIs and about a billion blood tests to rule out allergies and syndromes and viruses. Now we have gone down the naturopath track in the hope of fixing up our little guy who has constant headaches and stomach

The kids and dogs have grown up sharing the floor in our home and I have always thought it boosted the kids’ immunity. The joke could be on me. The source of the stubborn little suckers could be from tank water or a public swimming pool. But we are praying to the ‘gods of sick kids’ to make them go away before we all go crazy with trying to find a remedy.

There has been one silver lining in the parasite drama. On my search to find a cure for our boy, I drove to a doctor in Maleny and found ‘the best lamingtons’. These square-shaped slabs of heaven came from the bakery in the main street. The sponge is pure air and fluff, covered in velvet chocolate and the perfect amount of coconut. They have the power to reduce grown adults to tears, they are so divine.

So, when life is tough, I believe in two things – that saying: “This too shall pass” and the power of a perfect lamington.

WRAPPING UP THE ASX REPORTING SEASON

Global markets’ strong start to 2024 accelerated in February.

The MSCI World Index climbed 5.3 per cent to the end of the month, after a 1.1 per cent rise in January – underpinned by a spectacular 17 per cent rise in a resurgent Japanese stock market and further gains in most of the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’ US technology giants.

The local benchmark’s performance was much more muted, with the S&P/ASX 200 Index now up 1.3 per cent in the year to date (at the time of writing). Expectations were downbeat leading into February, which perhaps laid the foundation for the better-than expected reporting season.

But with the market trading well above its long-term average, much of the good news was already in the price – noting, especially, that the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index struck new highs recently.

One way we gauge a company’s performance during reporting season is the change in analysts’ valuations following the release of its earnings. Of the companies that provided updates, almost 75 per cent at least met expectations, with the remainder falling short. Impressively, eight of the 11 industry sectors saw positive revisions to at least half of their constituents. Overall, 51 per cent of stocks saw positive adjustments to the consensus target price, while 28 per cent were revised lower, with the balance unchanged.

Leading into reporting season, analyst expectations of earnings estimates were downbeat. But, as the earnings season got well underway, there were upward revisions to forward earnings growth estimates across many sectors. Financials and energy saw improvements in earnings per share (EPS) growth estimates, while utilities and materials experienced a deterioration in EPS growth expectations.

Overall, 12-month forward EPS growth for the Australian market declined, which suggests that although the results were pleasing at face value, the earnings outlook remains downbeat. Financials were a clear leader, with the greatest proportion of stocks seeing a positive adjustment to their price target. Consumer staples, real estate and healthcare followed closely.

Materials and utilities recorded the smallest proportion of stocks with positive revisions. Similarly, the proportion of downward revisions were largest for energy and materials, while financials stocks were the least inclined to see a downward adjustment to their price target.

On average, the magnitude of price target changes was largest for the IT sector, with an average adjustment of 7.7 per cent (albeit, this was attributable to a takeover offer for Altium). Even excluding Altium, however, the average price target adjustment was four per cent, which still placed it at the front of the pack. Financials saw average adjustments of almost four per cent, while energy, materials and utilities all recorded declines in valuations.

HELPING OLDER DRIVERS HANG UP THE KEYS

Conversations with seniors can help with planning and timing: study.

Active planning is the key to older people walking away from driving, new University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) research states.

In two papers in international journals, UniSC researchers explored the individual and environmental factors that influenced older drivers’ plans to retire from driving – or not.

Lead author Kyle Schofield, who has worked in health promotion and public health, says the research found that individual factors are generally the stimulus for older drivers to begin thinking about retiring from driving.

“These included declining physical health, the desire to maintain control, the cost of vehicle maintenance and worry about causing harm to others,” says Mrs Schofield, who contributed to the research as part of Master’s studies at UniSC.

The research combined a review of 12 studies, including 600 older and retired drivers from four countries, as well as in-depth interviews with a dozen regional participants.

“There is good evidence in international literature that conversations about life after driving are an important motivator in planning for driving retirement,” Mrs Schofield says.

“Yet, our local participants reported that they did not receive feedback on their driving. Therefore, feedback from family, peers and doctors did not play a large role in their decision-making. This identifies a great opportunity to encourage and

improve conversations about this critical life event in our community.”

The research also found that access to neighbourhood facilities, infrastructure such as continuous footpaths and pedestrian crossings, and available alternative transport are significant influences. The researchers say the findings suggest a need for coordinated and comprehensive resources at a policy level to help older people with their planning to stop driving.

Associate Professor in health promotion Florin Oprescu, the UniSC co-author and study supervisor, says older driver safety is of increasing interest for policy makers and practitioners as our ageing population continues to grow.

“Previous evidence suggests that only a small percentage of drivers plan for driving retirement and that there is limited understanding of the factors influencing this behaviour,” he says.

“This research shows how we can normalise the conversation around planning for driving retirement and support respectful conversations between older drivers, family, clinicians and peers.”

UNDERSTANDING DIABETIC EYE DISEASE

As we age, it becomes increasingly important to prioritise our eye health. If living with diabetes, no matter what your age, the risk of developing diabetic eye disease is a serious concern and may lead to blindness if left to its own devices.

blood sugar control and wearing sunglasses with UV protection are essential preventative measures.

There are ways to reduce your risk.

Control blood sugar levels: consistently monitor and manage blood glucose levels to reduce the risk of eye complications.

If you are on medication, such as insulin or tablets, use these as directed by

your doctor.

Regular eye examination: schedule comprehensive eye examinations annually or as recommended by your healthcare professional.

Blood pressure and cholesterol: it is essential to maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels through lifestyle changes and medication if necessary.

Healthy lifestyle habits: adopt a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption.

ARE YOU IGNORING EFFECTS OF SLEEP APNEA?

Sleep apnea (also known as obstructive sleep apnea or OSA) occurs when your throat muscles relax too much during sleep.

OSA prevents you from having a restful night’s sleep and is potentially a serious health concern if left untreated.

Symptoms may include:

• fatigue

• excessive daytime sleepiness

• snoring

• poor concentration and memory

• low energy

• waking up unrefreshed

• gasping or pauses in breathing while asleep

• morning headaches

• depressed mood

• waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat.

mySleep® offers a sleep test that you can do from the convenience of your own home. The test gives a very accurate picture of your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate and body position throughout the night. Most people find that sleeping in their own bed during the test helps them feel more comfortable, resting in a more realistic and natural way.

Sleep apnea can happen to anyone, of any age. If you have any these symptoms, talk to your doctor. If your doctor suspects you have OSA, they’ll refer you for sleep testing. Visit mysleep.com.au or call 1300 605 700.

EAR PAIN WHEN FLYING

Travelling can be a great joy. But occasionally, air travel can be a real pain.

During sudden altitude changes while flying, ear cavity pressure is often decreased, complemented by an increase in the cabin compared with the outside air pressure. In such a scenario, the unusual stretching of the eardrum or tympanic membrane may cause pain in the ear.

At the same time, it is not uncommon

to also experience decreased hearing abilities and muffled sounds as the eardrum becomes unable to vibrate normally. This can last even after the flight.

What can you do about it? Yawning, chewing and swallowing is helpful. During take-off and landing, chewing gum and swallowing activate the muscles that help release the pressure.

Don’t sleep during ascent and descent of flights. If you are awake you can take active measures to help.

If you are suffering from the common cold, sinusitis, nasal congestion, recent ear surgery or ear infection, think about changing your flight until feeling better.

Specific airplane earplugs slowly equalise the pressure against our eardrum during take-off and landing.

Over-the-counter decongestants are helpful if taken more than 30 minutes to an hour before travel. That may allow the ear to equalise pressure more quickly.

If flight pain is a regular occurrence for you, consider having an evaluation done at a hearing clinic to check for longer-term middle ear problems.

MELANOMA MARCH COMMUNITY SKIN CANCER UPDATE

Last week, the Sunshine Coast hosted the final walk of the Melanoma March 2024 fundraising campaign.

The event raised more than $7000 for research at the Melanoma Institute.

Despite the wet weather, a dedicated group of supporters completed the march from Alex Surf Club to Mooloolaba Surf

Club and back. One of the teams at the event was from SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre, led by Joyce Hardy.

“Melanoma March is a great awareness and fundraising campaign, and one close to our hearts at SunLife,” she says.

“We’re really grateful for the opportunity to show our support and give

a little back to the community.

“It was amazing to see everyone come out and support Melanoma March in the rain today.”

In more good news, the route between the two surf clubs has been confirmed as the annual home of the march.

If you can’t wait until next time to donate, don’t worry: you can still give to this year’s event until the end of April via the Melanoma March website.

For some, March isn’t the end of the skin cancer awareness campaign. The SunLife team will have its stall at the Nambour Expo from April 12-14.

“At SunLife, we believe in providing all aspects of skin cancer care for the benefit of our community,” a spokesperson says.

“The Nambour Expo is a great venue for us to engage.

“Our team will be available to answer your skin cancer questions, we’ll have a range of sun protection to buy and free sunscreen for use on the day.”

SunLife will have a demonstration of its 3D skin cancer imaging on display, so visitors can see how the latest skinimaging technology works in practice and hear what the experts have to say about it.

The professionalism and compassion of paramedics attending emergency calls can reduce unnecessary presentations at hospital emergency departments (EDs).

That’s according to University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) research by a veteran ambulance officer.

Dr Robbie King’s five-year PhD at UniSC found that the quality of interactions between patients and paramedics on site – including validation of concerns, thorough assessment and therapeutic communication – could restore a patient’s confidence in their ability to self-manage without transport to hospital.

“The study identified that paramedics are trusted by patients as healthcare professionals who are able to support them with decision-making regarding necessity of attendance at hospital ED,” Dr King says.

“When patient-paramedic interactions included validation, thorough assessment and both compassionate and professional care, patients who did not need to attend ED were able to regain self-efficacy to manage their concerns independently.”

FUNDING FOR DEMENTIA RESEARCH PROJECTS

The Dementia Australia Research Foundation recently announced funding for 24 projects in the latest grants program, worth more than $3 million in total.

Exploring how the gut microbiome may be key to the early diagnosis and development of treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, and combining gene-editing technology with artificial intelligence are just two of the projects to receive funding from the Dementia Australia Research Foundation’s 2023 Grant Round.

Macquarie University post-doctoral fellow Dr Pradeep Manuneedhi Cholan received the Race Against Dementia –Dementia Australia Research Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship to study how the gut microbiome impacts the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Established in 2020 by racing legend and Dementia Australia patron Sir Jackie Stewart’s Race Against Dementia charity and the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, the fellowship supports early-career researchers in the field of dementia prevention or treatment.

“The gut is often referred to as our ‘second brain’ as it can control our

emotions, stress response and cognition. Previous research has shown that the metabolites produced by bacterial species in the gut can impact inflammation in the brain, which can either exacerbate or alleviate the progression of Alzheimer’s disease,” Dr Cholan says.

“What is not known is specifically how the metabolites produced by different types of gut bacteria can regulate the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, which is what I will be focusing on with this project.

“If successful, this project will pave the way for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and aid in the development of new drug treatments. It could also allow for better management of Alzheimer’s disease by analysing the gut composition of patients and providing them with lifestyle-based interventions tailored to their particular microbiome.”

Easy study monitors your sleep patterns

If you’re constantly tired and endure the discomforts of snoring, it might be more than just a nuisance.

Sleep apnea – a prevalent condition often overlooked – could be the culprit. But fear not: addressing it is simpler than you might think.

Begin by taking a free online assessment at cpap.com.au/pages/ sleep-studies to gauge the likelihood of a disorder such as sleep apnea. Your results will direct your next steps.

If sleep apnea seems probable, seek a referral through telehealth or your healthcare provider for a study which will be conducted by Sleep Testing Australia.

During the study, conducted at a clinic, you’ll be fitted with a device to monitor your sleep patterns. Afterward, a team of experts will analyse your results and provide a comprehensive report within two weeks.

With the guidance of a sleep consultant, you’ll understand your diagnosis and available treatment options. For those already diagnosed, CPAP Direct offers support in navigating CPAP therapy, ensuring the right equipment for your lifestyle.

By following these steps, you’ll embark on a journey towards better sleep and overall wellbeing. Reclaim your vitality with the support of Sleep Testing Australia and CPAP Direct. For assistance and CPAP equipment, visit cpap.com.au.

Recovery after an anterior total hip replacement

Many patients are surprised at how quickly they can comfortably ambulate after an anterior total hip replacement. Patients are typically mobilised within hours of their surgery. Most of our patients usually rapidly progress to being independent on crutches and require them for only one to two weeks.

There are many factors that dictate how long a patient needs to stay in hospital but generally getting back to your home environment as soon as it is safe to do so is an important component of your physical, as well as your psychological, recovery.

Excessive physical activity in the first two months after a hip replacement is counterproductive. We generally recommend gentle walking and stretching.

Many patients are safe to drive after just three to four weeks and can perform most of their everyday activities within six weeks.

For patients who enjoy more extreme activities such as surfing, they should wait at least three months to return.

All patients are different, and you should discuss your specific situation with your orthopaedic surgeon.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES (MAR 21 - APR 19)

Monday night’s total solar eclipse is in your sign which boosts energy levels, motivation and your determination. If you’re lacking confidence, then spend time with an uber Aries friend. Hopefully, some of their chutzpah and self-assurance will rub off on you.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)

On Monday night there’s a fiery solar eclipse in your adventure zone, which highlights holidays, adventure, exploration and exciting beginnings. But retrograde Mercury is also there, which could complicate or limit patience and lengthen frustrations.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)

With your sparky Sagittarian mojo and momentum running on high speed, you’re ready to rock and roll. Monday night’s fiery solar eclipse activates your leisure-andpleasure zone, so all forms of entertainment will appeal as you enjoy yourself to the max.

QUIZ

1. Who wrote the 1936 novel Gone with the Wind?

2. The Golden Lion is the highest prize awarded at which film festival?

3. Engineering and robotics company Boston Dynamics is owned by which automobile manufacturer?

4. What is the title of Charlie Puth’s (pictured) 2022 studio album?

5. What does the stamen of a flower do?

6. In February 2024, three new moons were discovered around which two planets in the solar system?

7. What does NASCAR stand for?

8. How many millilitres in a metric cup?

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)

Taurus is a fixed sign and you can be a bossy, stubborn bull. Aim to be more adaptable this week, as you focus attention on helping those around you. The solar eclipse lights up your humanitarian zone, so being of service to others sees you glow on the inside.

VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)

Mercury (your boss planet) is in retrograde mode until April 25. So – even though there’s a new moon/solar eclipse on Monday night – it’s not an appropriate week to initiate ideas or race ahead with projects. Instead, be patient and pace yourself.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)

The solar eclipse promises a fresh start involving family plans, a domestic situation or a new housemate. But the Mars/Saturn conjunction – and retro Mercury – could delay a project, exacerbate a misunderstanding, or frustrate a financial situation.

9. The Southern Cross is a pattern of stars within which constellation?

10. In chess, a bishop can move in what manner?

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

Mercury is your ruling planet and it’s in retrograde mode until April 25. So, it’s not a good time for communication and business. However, it is a good time to do anything with an ‘re’ in front of it: revise, rehearse, review, recover, remember and reconnect.

LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)

With Venus and the solar eclipse in your relationship zone, you’re keen to inspire others. But Mercury is retrograde, so you’ll need to utilise your well-developed diplomatic skills. It’s up to you to lead the way towards a more sustainable future.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)

The Aquarian buzzword for the week is Communication (with a capital ‘C’). Monday night’s solar eclipse stimulates your neighbourhood and conversation zones, so expect increased social interaction and educational activities within your community.

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Professional projects and creative collaborations with colleagues are favoured, as you spark ideas off each other to produce something special. The total solar eclipse and Venus encourage rebooting a rickety work relationship that’s been experiencing problems.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)

The solar eclipse (in Aries) encourages you to be proactive as you set challenging daily goals and then actively pursue them. Not sure how to do that? Try rubbing shoulders with your Aries friends … they’ll show you how to crank up your motivation.

PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)

Mars and Saturn link up in your sign (on Wednesday/Thursday) which could squash confidence. However, the solar eclipse and Venus stimulate your self-esteem zone. So steer clear of criticism and avoid getting caught up in a negative self-talk loop.

THE COAST’S MOST-EXPENSIVE STREETS

Homes on one Noosa Heads road are sitting pretty, with median sale prices leading the region’s top 10. Words: Matt Nicholls.

New data has revealed the top 10 most-expensive streets on the Sunshine Coast, with those boasting water views dominating the rankings.

The data, compiled by Ray White using information from all agencies, shows the streets with the highest median sales during the three years starting from February 2021.

The most-expensive street on the Coast over that time was Noosa Parade in Noosa Heads, with a median sale price of $16.5m.

Arakoon Crescent at Sunshine Beach had the next highest median price of $13.625m. Noosa Parade and Arakoon Crescent were also the most-expensive streets in all of Queensland.

Ray White Group analyst Jemima White says there is a common trend among the streets in the top 10.

“These streets are either riverfront or beachfront in the most popular spots in the Sunshine Coast,” she says.

“The properties on these streets are large, often newly renovated, with infinity pools, spas, gyms – the list goes on. So, these streets represent the premium not

second-highest in the state.

“The significant proportion of the property owners on these expensive streets are wealthy families that live in capital cities around Australia and have their homes here as a holiday property.

“This aspect of the Sunshine Coast, particularly Noosa, makes buying here even more attractive as they know there is the option of renting it out and earning high rental income when the properties aren’t being used.”

The top 10 most expensive streets for median sales on the Sunshine Coast were:

Noosa Parade only for beachfront/riverfront but also for beautiful, large and finished homes.

“Not only are Noosa Parade and Arakoon Crescent the most-expensive streets in the Sunshine Coast, they top the state as well. And their median prices aren’t far off Australia’s most-expensive street: Wolseley Crescent in Sydney’s Point Piper at $23,500,000. This is evidence of such a high demand Australians have in owning a river and beachfront property in one of the country’s most sought-after holiday destinations.”

Ms White says the controlled supply of properties on streets so close to city centres and “beautiful environmental assets” has created a strong desire and exclusivity to owning property in those places – meaning, when they come up for sale, they are sold quickly.

“Tourism in Noosa is continuing to grow with the number of visitors in 2022-2023 up on pre-COVID levels and highest in the state,” she says.

“So, we’ve seen growth in median weekly asking rents in Noosa grow to be the
