OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts ts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in degradable plastic.

n recent weeks I have spent many hours at Nambour Hospital. As I sat in the same chair, day in day out, beside my ill father, I made a number of observations. The hilarious Hamish and Annie were two of the kindest, most down-to-earth people I have met. Great nurses, too. Then there was the specialist teams of doctors, many who would pop their head into the room simply to say hello. Jack, the physio, who always made us laugh and hugged us goodbye on our departure. And John, the doctor who showed my young son how to use his toy stethoscope. People are quick to jump on the anti-public health bandwagon. There are delays, wait times are too long and you can’t have your choice of doctor. But these people are no less educated or professional. What I saw during the past month was a hard-working team. Smart people who are committed to their patients. People who work gruelling hours and in many cases, deserve more money than they are paid. With the Sunshine Coast University Hospital opening this month, I believe there is no better time than the present to pay tribute to the wonderful men and women who work tirelessly in our health system. QUICK CHAT

TV STAR GOES BACK TO HER RADIO ROOTS Alexandra Headland’s Paula McGrath has gone full circle, starting out at Sea FM, moving into TV and now back on radio as the ‘fill-in girl’ on Mix FM. and the new hospital hasn’t even opened yet. How are the doctors going to get there in a hurry if there is emergency surgery needed? It is a 40-minute drive currently from Nambour Hospital to the University Hospital.

FIRST JOB? Working as a Coca Cola promotional girl at the Billy Joel concert in Adelaide, thus my passion for music was cemented.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Learning new skills to help me get back into my career, which is learning to push buttons, and use computer programs… the technical side to radio, which I never had to do in the past as I was lucky enough to sit on the other side of the desk and chat.

Tough question as I have had some amazing days, but looking into my son’s eyes for the first time.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My five-year-old son Jem, our staffy Harvey the Wonder Dog, Banana Head our fish, then of course my mum, Gaye, my brothers Andrew and Kevin and sister Selina, my dad and his wife Cath and their two sons, all my nephews and nieces and my friends who are like family to me.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? I have had many, starting with Billy, Wild Child, Perfect Paula, P-fer (as in P for Paula) more recently Paula Maula. IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

FIRST CAR? Mazda 1200 which was nicknamed ‘The Billy Wagon’.

FAVOURITE BOOK? To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee.

FAVOURITE SONG? At the moment, I Feel It Coming by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk – such a great track and he sounds like Michael Jackson.

Saying hello and goodbye to my first born son, as I had a premature labour at 24 weeks. You can’t prepare for a moment like that but the human spirit is incredible. I turned that loss and grief into a positive in the way that I thought of some women who never even get the opportunity to have a child. I remember saying, if that was my mummy moment, I am blessed. It was a turning point as my empathy and compassion went through the roof after that. This Mother’s Day it will be 10 years.

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT? I think my TV career. From eight years old I wanted to be on TV and I did 25 hours of live TV a week for Channel V. But the day I took a call from my absolute idol Jane Kennedy to invite me as a guest panellist on Channel Ten’s The Panel, I was like, how much better can it get?

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?

By my mum: you can achieve anything you set your heart and mind to, you just need to work hard towards it, and never lose sight of that goal.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

When I’m singing or out dancing with the girls, drink in hand.

Oh hard question, so many. I do love Noosa Main Beach if I venture away from Alex Beach.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE?

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS?

I moved here in 1988 so 29 years but travel, then my career took me to other places for years. I have been back permanently coming up to 10 years.

Noosa, Noosa North Shore for a drive along the beach, the hinterland, a climb of Mount Ngungun, Australia Zoo, Ocean Street for a bit of dancing and drinking, Spice Bar.

To be patient, keep focus on your passion but enjoy the adventures and side roads you take along the way, with each love comes a lesson, learn it then move on, let them go, there will be plenty more.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

It’s home. I have been lucky enough to live many places in the world and Australia but I choose the Sunshine Coast. It is the lifestyle here, the beaches, you see everyone out exercising, healthy eating, friendly people and the amazing weather.

I would have to say the roads. I struggle to comprehend why forward planning with roads hasn’t been thought out better. Nicklin Way is a nightmare, now Kawana Way is a nightmare

TEA OR COFFEE? Tea and only tea. Earl Grey, English Breakfast, white with one, stirred once to the left, ha ha ha, or a good chai.

NRL OR AFL? AFL – still got the Adelaide girl in my roots.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY? The difference in our approach is gaining an understanding of “what’s important to you”. BUSTING SOME MYTHS

BY THE NUMBERS

THE LIST

3500

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Australian Health Survey, these are the top five lifestyle health risk factors affecting society. It might be time to put down the block of chocolate and get moving.

For anyone who has regularly visited Nambour Hospital in the past, they will know just how difficult it can be to find a car park. It can be frustrating, to say the least. Word has it that the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital will cater appropriately with 3500 car parking spaces located on the health campus.

1. Being overweight or obese 2. Smoking 3. Excessive alcohol consumption 4. Poor diet 5. Lack of exercise

DID YOU KNOW?

DO YOU REMEMBER? When the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is fully commissioned, it is expected that 10,000 fewer patients will have to travel and undergo complex treatments in Brisbane each year.

Girls of the 1980s – and parents who had young daughters in this period – will remember the sparkly and colourful hair bobbles. It was always a challenge trying to get them around your ponytail without getting your knuckles hit in the process.

Human beings have 100 billion brain cells. Not true. While it may be tempting to round up, in actual fact we only have 86 billion neurons.

FEATURE STORY

A NEW ERA FOR LOCAL HEALTH CARE The Sunshine Coast community has watched in awe as the Sunshine Coast University Hospital began to take shape and next week, the state-of-the-art facility will accept its first patients. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

H

IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

“The stunning facility allows 75 per cent of patients to have private rooms”

ealth care in our region will never be the same once the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) accepts its first patients next week. The $1.8 billion facility will open on March 21 with 450 beds and the ability to cater for growing demand by expanding to 900 beds beyond 2021 if needed. The stunning facility allows 75 per cent of patients to have private rooms with ensuites and all patient rooms have windows with serene views. Technology is king at SCUH and it has manifested itself in the way of robots that deliver food throughout the hospital for staff to serve to patients within their ward, a complex series of concealed tubes that deliver pathology specimens quickly and efficiently, 89 ROWA Pharmacy robots to dispense medications, electronic check-in kiosks for outpatient appointments and electronic information directories that can provide directions throughout the hospital. These are only a few of the advanced new features of the hospital.

“With mental health, you can’t just have a CT scan or run some blood tests and get an answer” Dr Chris Lilley

When it comes to treatment, SCUH includes a comprehensive cancer centre, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, specialised medical and surgical services, a major trauma service, pediatrics, 32 outpatient services and adolescent mental health in-patient beds, all of which will prevent about 10,000 patients each year from having to travel to Brisbane for complex treatment. Sunshine Coast Mental Health and Addiction Service (SCMHAS) clinical director Dr Chris Lilley is among the hundreds of staff who are excited to unveil the new hospital to the community. “For a long time, there has been nothing new in health on the Sunshine Coast of any significance,” he says. “We are also quite excited about the Sunshine Coast Health Institute, which is a great opportunity for education in mental health and other disciplines moving forward. “It is great to see the huge amount of

10 My Weekly Preview | March 17, 2017

10.indd 1

support we have received here and we look forward to the future redevelopment of the Nambour and Caloundra hospitals to link in with what this facility is going to offer.” Lilley says SCUH will feature the Sunshine Coast’s first adolescent mental health inpatient beds. The six beds will mean patients aged between 13 and 18, who have previously been sent to the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital, Lady Cilento, Logan and even the Gold Coast for treatment of severe anxiety, depression, and the early stages of psychotic conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder, will now be able to stay on the Coast. “It will be great to get them back here, which is very much what this hospital is all about. One of the disadvantages of bringing people into hospital is that it takes them away from their support network and can take the foot off the throttle for their recovery,” he says. “(Hospitalisation) does become necessary at times, because with mental health, you can’t just have a CT scan or run

some blood tests and get an answer. Sometimes you require ongoing observation of their behaviour to determine the best course of action.” Once the team has settled in, Lilley says they hope to expand their services to include a day program for adolescents, where they can attend the hospital for treatment or consultations during the day, and then return to their parents and caregivers every night. SCMHAS service director Lisa Newport is quick to point out that in-patient care is just the tip of the iceberg, making up only about three to four per cent of the consumers they see. Around 1200 Coast residents, ranging in age from three to 95, receive mental health care in their homes every day. The seven mental health clinics within the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) currently include almost 400 professionals and this will expand to 450 when the new SCUH mental health unit, which also includes 12 inpatient beds myweeklypreview.com.au

14/03/2017 11:16:11 AM

FEATURE STORY dedicated to seniors, opens on March 28. The new unit will complement inpatient care at the Nambour General Hospital, where there are 22 adult beds. Newport says the new-look service will be delivered as a contemporary and integrated model of care, focusing on recovery, effective partnership with primary health care and other mental health providers to ensure seamless continuity of care across all settings. “We offer a comprehensive approach for our consumers in an early intervention setting where they also have access to allied health services such as dieticians, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologists to ensure they can get on the right path to making healthy life choices into the future,” she says. Consumers will also have the benefit of access to another region-first – the Peer Worker Work Force, which was established with the assistance of $25,600 from the Wishlist charity. Peer workers are those who have a lived experience of mental illness and have faced, endured, and overcome adversity themselves. The program has already seen 16 people train for a Certificate IV in Peer Work at TAFE Queensland East Coast, so they can assist clinical staff in the treatment of consumers by providing someone they can

“We offer... an early intervention setting where they also have access to allied health services” relate to and someone who can support, encourage, and even mentor those on their own recovery journey. While some have already been employed by not-for-profit organisations, others will start working with the SCHHS. In the realm of cancer treatment, SCUH will provide comprehensive oncology, clinical hematology and radiation oncology services through the Adem Crosby Centre, which was named after the young Buderim

philanthropist who lost his battle with cancer in 2013. The centre will open in April and features two Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators, worth about $5.6 million in total, which will provide more than 650 patients with around 13,000 treatments in the first year of operation. Minister for Health Cameron Dick says these machines will improve the patient experience by delivering shorter, more efficient treatments by targeting the treatment of tumours in the spine, breast, and prostate. “These services have never been offered in a public hospital in the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service area, so this is a milestone not only for this new hospital but for this region,” he says. There is a buzz about the region in the lead-up to the opening of SCUH and the opportunities it will present for our region going forward. SUNSHINE COAST HEALTH INSTITUTE

A linear accelerator cancer treatment machine at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital

With so much coverage about the university component of the hospital in the lead-up to its opening, My Weekly Preview wants to clear up the confusion. Although the wheels are still in motion for a partnership with a university to establish a medical school with 50 placements by 2019, more than 1550 nursing and allied health students from TAFE East Coast and the University of the Sunshine Coast are already on the Sunshine Coast Health Institute (SCHI) campus alongside the University Hospital. SCHI features a 370-seat auditorium with state-ofthe-art audio visual technology, which will allow students to watch procedures being undertaken in other locations.

MIDWIFERY SERVICE CELEBRATES ONE YEAR AND 500 BABIES Mums, bubs and midwives converged on Nelson Park last week to celebrate the first anniversary of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s Midwifery Group Practice. The Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) has seen 502 babies born in the 12 months since the program started. MGP clinical midwife consultant Ann Evans says the Midwifery Group Practice is beneficial for local mums because each woman was allocated a midwife who followed her throughout her pregnancy and was also on call, attended the woman’s birth, and visited her and her baby at home after birth. The Midwifery Group Practice has 18 midwives, providing care to 20 per cent of women seeking maternity care in the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service region – about 550 women a year.

COAST BEACHES MAKE TOP 25 Three Sunshine Coast beaches have made it onto TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Beaches in Australia list. While Noosa Main Beach and Mooloolaba Beach have reclaimed top 10 spots, Kings Beach has made a triumphant entrance onto the list, coming in at number 18. Caloundra Tourism Manager Jane Chapman says the entry is special as the list is voted for by the public. “Having three beaches feature in Australia’s Top 25 list sends out a positive message about the beauty, diversity, quality and facilities of our Sunshine Coast beaches,” Chapman says.

Following three consecutive record breaking years, Crime Stoppers Queensland has recorded its highest ever number of annual arrests as a direct result of reports made. The new figures released by Crime Stoppers Queensland as part of its Annual Results Celebration Day, show reports made to the organisation in 2016 led to 3102 arrests and 8857 charges being placed, which is a respective increase of 18.3 per cent and 24 per cent. Crime Stoppers Queensland CEO Trevor O’Hara says it is the first time the organisation has assisted with the arrest of more than 3000 offenders in one year.

“I’LL GET YOU MY PRETTY”: ROSANNA NATOLI’S DARK SIDE Local television identity Rosanna Natoli is so good at playing the Wicked Witch she’s even frightening her own children. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

IMAGES: KENN SANTOS

W

e’ve never seen Seven News presenter Rosanna Natoli looking quite like this before. Set to appear as the Wicked Witch in the upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz at the Events Centre in Caloundra, the local television identity, who lives at West Woombye, is excited to have the opportunity to play one of the most iconic villains of all time. “The thing about playing the Wicked Witch is she has the best lines in the show,” Rosanna says.”Usually the villains have the best lines and the best costumes and get to deliver those cracker moments everyone remembers. I get to do that – wear fabulous clothes, have great lines and be a character everyone remembers.” She doesn’t quite melt into a puddle on stage, as the original Wicked Witch famously did in the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, but her demise will be just as memorable. Neither will she be an ugly witch with a wart on her nose. “Initially I said I didn’t want to be green, because the green you traditionally see the Wicked Witch as is a flat green and she’s wearing that ugly witch’s hat and I wasn’t really excited about that. But when Thomas Armstrong-Robley, the director, said they were re-imagining the character, I was really excited. I thought, there’s so much more scope than that stereotype. “Tom explained that really evil people in our society are often the powerful or the beautiful, or the beautifully groomed and not someone walking down the street who’s ugly with a wart on their nose. Pure evil comes from within and often they have a beautiful exterior. He wanted a Wicked Witch that was green, but a beautiful green – that’s where all that contouring and glitter and sparkle in the character’s makeup comes in, because yes she’s evil, but also a little bit vain.” Natoli is no stranger to the stage and screen, having worked as a television presenter for 22 years and often acting as MC at Sunshine Coast events. But what you may not know is she has some serious acting chops behind her. She studied drama at the University of Queensland, performed the lead role in musicals at Aspley High School in Brisbane and spent a few years studying and performing with Bats Theatre Buderim. “I haven’t been on stage as a character performer for more than 20 years,” she says. “I might not have been a character on stage, but certainly I have been on stage with my TV coverage and speaking at events. I’m no stranger to performing in front of crowds but I’m usually performing as me, not someone who’s wicked and awful.” Natoli remembers watching The Wizard of Oz as a child and covering her eyes during the frightening scenes with the witch.

She loves the story because it’s something we can all relate to. “Who doesn’t love the Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and Dorothy? You just want them to get to Oz and get their courage and brains and heart. It’s a show that’s as much for adults as it is for kids. I think every adult will see something in those characters that is true for themselves. We all wish we had more courage sometimes, or used our brains better sometimes. Really, it’s a journey of self discovery.” Natoli says she often bites off more than she can chew and this role is no exception. “When I take on a project I throw myself into it wholeheartedly – I’m learning and practising lines at night. Rehearsals are every weekend at the moment and I’m dropping one child to netball, another to soccer and another to the Plaza for work, then getting myself to rehearsals.” Natoli’s daughter Mia is also in the production, playing a Munchkin. All three of Natoli’s children and husband Joe are thrilled she’s having so much fun doing something she loved as

Master Builders Display Village - Parklakes 2

a teenager, before the time constraints of work and family took over. o “My kids are a bit in awe,” Natoli says. “When I turn scream at them around and screa they get so as the Witch, the frightened, so I’m pleased with that,” she laughs. been waiting “I’ve be something pretty for someth get me back special to g theatre,” she says. to the theatre wonderful “It’s such a w outlet; you creative outlet can bring joy and entertainment to entertainmen people. other people “Initially when you start playing a character dimensional. You it’s two dimen read the lines and you are the person but later on, that character you become tha surprises you. I in a way that surp try not to be evil in my real life; kindness and I try to adopt kindn generosity day to day it iin my d dealings with people. To find that kind of meanness, I had to reach inside. Dorothy is so sweet and the girl who plays her, Kayleigh, is the sweetest girl so to turn around and be evil to her is hard. “I’m having a great time and I’m confident the audiences will too. I’m a little nervous because I want it to be perfect for everybody; I want to deliver a flawless performance. I just love putting on a show – that’s my character. To put on a show and entertain and bring people something they haven’t seen before. In my everyday job in news, I get to do that in a different way but I’m still sharing a story with people. It’s all storytelling, whether it’s the news where you’re telling other people’s stories, or on stage where you’re telling a character’s story.”

The Wizard of Oz will be presented by Gateway Theatre Productions at the Events Centre, Caloundra from April 8 to 11. Visit theeventscentre.com.au and click What’s On for more information.

MY OPINION

BIG LESSONS FROM THE BIG SCREEN

ONE NATION’S LOSS IS OUR GAIN

Sami Muirhead picks up some invaluable life lessons from chef Matt Golinski via the 1984 movie, Karate Kid.

Alex McKean says any preference deals being done with Pauline Hanson’s One Nation in our upcoming state election should be declared now.

I

was chatting with one of the most inspirational people I know, Matt Golinski, when he imparted some really sage advice. The word ‘inspirational’ is almost a cliche these days and I tried to think of another way to describe the well-known chef, but I failed. Damn amazing came to mind, as did strong and one of a kind. To pick yourself up as he has done after unimaginable and cruel loss to become an icon in the community for giving and for goodness is beyond incredible. We were talking at a fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland’s Relay For Life. Nearly 3,500 Sunshine Coast locals are diagnosed with cancer each year. Matt’s own mum lost her battle with cancer 20 years ago, so it is yet another charity close to Matt’s heart for very sad reasons. You wonder why some people have so many burdens to carry in life. But Matt’s charity cooking class was full of fun and fabulous food and some free advice. Matt told me he encourages all his apprentice chefs to go home after their first week at work and watch the movie Karate Kid. The 1984 martial arts movie is the ultimate story of the underdog Daniel who is under the tutelage of the humble karate king, Mr Miyage. The sensei makes his young student perform seemingly boring

tasks again and again such as waxing his car. Anyone who grew up in the ‘80s knows the catchcry: “Wax on. Wax off”. The repetitive task teaches Daniel the very basic life lesson that you have to do something again and again to become really good at it. Life does not always have a shortcut. And this is the lesson Matt wants to teach the future young guns of the cooking world. It is a pretty good lesson isn’t it? Who knew a movie that is more than three decades old could have such a great lesson for kids? It started me thinking about movies that have great lessons. The Notebook taught us it’s OK to paint nude on a sprawling deck when you are in love and have a grand old house and Ryan Gosling at your beck and call. Frozen showed us you cannot trust the good looking, smooth bloke 99 per cent of the time. Trolls taught us to stick by our friends even if we are about to be boiled alive by monsters. And Sex And The City reminded us you always need your girlfriends in life, no matter what. I know. My list is lame. But that’s why we have much more worthy people in the world, such as Matt Golinksi. And one last life lesson for the girls: sometimes a really great pair of shoes can change your future or at least give you a night to remember forever. Case in point? Cinderella!

“Trolls taught us to stick by our friends even if we are about to be boiled alive”

T

he proverb has it that those who would sup with the devil should have a long spoon. The outcome of the Western Australian election should give all players, in both the federal and Queensland arenas, pause for thought. The desperate decision by outgoing Premier Barnett to preference One Nation above coalition partners (or power-sharers) the National Party, has backfired. The Nationals were always going to be vulnerable. Their own devil’s bargain with the Liberals has exposed the party to criticism that the price of ‘sharing power’ is an abandonment of their constituency in the bush. The abject failure, by Coalition governments Australia-wide, to properly prioritise prime farming land above mining interests, has highlighted this weakness. Pauline Hanson has always stood ready to cash in on the weaknesses in the Coalition, exploiting the disenfranchised for her own ends. Political opportunism, and appeals to fear and ignorance, are the only products One Nation peddles. Queenslanders have good reason to be thankful for the way in which the WA campaign has played out. It was during that campaign that the mask was ripped from the ‘new and improved’ version of Hanson. As one example, Hanson was caught out suggesting that Queenslanders should give up a share of their GST revenue to make for a perceived shortfall in money flowing to WA.

For the woman who would be king-maker in the Queensland election, enunciating such a position is political poison. The individual perhaps most discomfited by the events in WA is Steve Dickson MP, the sole One Nation MP in the Queensland Parliament. Caught by the identical desire that led the Nationals to ruin, Dickson made a bargain with Hanson in return for the chimera of a seat at the Cabinet table. The quid pro quo is presumably that One Nation would shore up the numbers for an LNP government in Queensland. One Nation cannot be both outsiders,

“Pauline Hanson has always stood ready to cash in…” attracting the protest, or ‘anti-politician’ vote, and at the same time political dealmakers, trading preferences in a naked grab for a share of power. The media should demand early confirmation from all players in the Queensland election regarding what preference deals are being done. The electorate is entitled to know precisely where their vote will be going and should carefully consider the implications for the future of this state.

Alex McKean is a barrister and academic who is currently researching in the area of integrity commissions.

TOKYO MILK DARK – EVERYTHING HING AND NOT NOTHING OTH H We were rather intrigued when this fragrance arrived at the My Weekly Preview office for us to test. We weren’t sure if it was for men or women at first. The packaging was masculine – a solid, rectangular black bottle with a black and teal box – but the scent was subtly feminine. Upon further investigation, we discovered it is indeed a perfume for women but quite unique. A blend of sweet orange with pressed petals, desert moss and tea leaves creates a scent that’s enchanting without being overpowering. It strikes a delicate balance between floral and citrus and is fresh and feminine, $85 from Alterior Motif, Cotton Tree.

MY LIFE

WOMEN CHOOSING CHINESE MEDICINE OVER THEIR GP Many Australian women are turning to Chinese medicine to treat chronic medical conditions, and doctors are concerned. The younger the woman is the more likely they are to bypass the local GP and turn to complementary medicine. A longitudinal study of 17,000 participants found in just one year acupuncture was used by around one in 10 women aged 34 to 39 years and around 1 in 16 women aged 62 to 67 years. Women with arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome and endometriosis were more likely to use Chinese medicine and acupuncture, the University of Technology, Sydney study found. Those with private health insurance were 1.65 times more likely to use the treatment compared to those without. Dr Tony Bartone, Vice President of the Australian Medical Association, says the study findings confirm anecdotal information that large numbers of Australians are choosing Chinese medicine for “hard-to-treat” medical conditions. “It is more concerning that younger people and those with private health insurance are more likely to seek these treatments without the advice of their family doctor,” Dr Bartone says. Chinese herbal medicine has a long history of use, dating back thousands of years and it continues to be used in many countries as the first and primary treatment of choice. – AAP

TAKE A LOAD OFF Jodi Chapman says if you’re overworked and overburdened, now is the time to slow down and take time to rest and relax.

A

re you choosing to work longer hours, get less sleep, and take on more responsibility? Missing that exercise class or your usual afternoon run, turning your back on the balance of work and play. Is it OK to live in a way that leaves you feeling exhausted? Are you settling for less than something absolutely amazing? If we’re not careful, it’s easy to get lost in the pursuit of happiness. You may not feel the end result for many years, then before you know it, you’re forgetful, exhausted, overwhelmed, emotionally flat, and unmotivated at best. For some, irritable, angry, depressed, anxious, and very unhappy with the life they have, unable to find the time to do the things that would make life the way you want. Overworked and overburdened by responsibilities is a state we develop

over time. Emotionally and physically, happiness relies on how much time we allow for rest also. Hormones are needed in abundance to keep up with the energy requirements of busy lives. As time goes on, those hormones naturally decline, and faster during stress, making it harder to keep that state of energy and positive mindset. Spend a week going to bed early, until you wake refreshed again. Take time out to read a book in the sunshine, time with friends, factor fitness and fun into your life again, get your balance back. Reduce responsibilities and stress where you can, do things to rejuvenate your soul, and feel how absolutely amazing life can be again.

LOCAL NEWS

SEEING DOUBLE Celebrating multiples as individuals. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

Taylah and Alexis Jarrett are ready to celebrate.

S

cott and Bronwyn Jarrett had been trying to fall pregnant for almost two years before they received the life-changing news that they would be expecting twins. What followed was a whirlwind of emotions and a challenging pregnancy before their gorgeous girls Taylah and Alexis were born via emergency caesarean at 34 weeks gestation. “We were in shock and surprise and shed lots of tears when we first found out we were having twins,” Bronwyn says. “Once the shock wore off, it was like we had won the lottery.” Bronwyn says after the initial visitors left

and Scott went back to work, she became isolated at home, something she says is common for multiple birth mothers. But a “lifeline” came when the girls were nine months old. “Another twin mother in the baby room at a shopping centre told me I had to come to an under ones morning tea with her at the Sunshine Coast Multiple Birth Association,” she says. “This was one of the rare times I had been out of the house by myself with them and I was sleep deprived and slowly drowning in it all. I arrived at the first morning tea and I felt absolute relief knowing there was always someone to talk to who was going through the same.” The Jarretts will join Coast families to celebrate Multiple Birth Awareness Week, which runs from March 12 to 19. This year’s theme is Born a Multiple; Also an Individual as although they share a unique bond, multiples are often simply labelled as ‘the twins/triplets/quads’ and are seen to have the same thoughts, preferences and personalities as their siblings.

SHAVING FOR A CURE Margaret Schausberger has never dared to rock a pink hairstyle, but the 75-year-old has decided to give it a go – even if it is only briefly. The Living Choice Kawana Island resident has signed up for the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation. She will be one of thousands of extraordinary people who are helping beat blood cancer by getting sponsored to shave or colour their hair for the annual event. Margaret will be doing both, preparing to shave off her newly-coloured pink do during the village’s Happy Hour at 6pm on March 17. The cause is close to Margaret’s heart, with husband Joe battling multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer, for the past 16 years. Until 2016, regular observation and treatment of the symptoms kept the illness at bay, but late last year the bone marrow cancer progressed and Joe is facing months of chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant at the Wesley Hospital. “The Leukaemia Foundation is providing accommodation for both of us while Joe is an outpatient and also for me while Joe is an inpatient. This could be for as long as three months,” Margaret tells My Weekly Preview.

Margaret and Joe Schausberger “We’ve witnessed many advances in treating this nasty, insidious cancer over the years and that has convinced us that donating to cancer research is really worthwhile. “While they can’t actually cure this cancer for good, we expect this series of treatments will give Joe back a nearly normal life.” Joe says he is extremely proud of his wife, describing her participation in the fundraiser as “courageous”. However, Margaret is showing no apprehension at all, saying she will spray her hair pink first and then sit very still for the razor. To support Margaret in her shave fundraising, visit leukaemiafoundation.org. au and search for Margaret Schausberger.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR INVESTMENTS Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

T

axation is an important consideration for all investors. Ultimately, the issue that matters most to investors is, what money is left after all costs and taxes are paid. What is my after-tax return? There are a number of investment structures that can be used to hold your investments, such as superannuation funds, companies and trusts. After-tax returns can vary substantially depending on the vehicle used. As an example, let’s assume that we have a couple, John and Mary. John works full-time as an employee of a professional services firm and is fortunate to have a salary that is substantial enough that he is taxed at the highest marginal rate. Mary works

part-time and earns $20,000 a year from her job. Let’s also assume that they have received $20,000 in fully franked dividends from their share portfolio. If the shares were owned in John’s name he would receive only $14,571 of the $20,000 dividend after tax. If John and Mary owned the shares in joint names, their after tax income would increase to $18,274. If the share were held in Jenny’s name only, they would receive $20,538 due to the tax refund from the franking credits being higher than the tax payable on Jenny’s more modest income. If they owned the shares through a superannuation fund in the accumulation phase, they would keep $24,285 because the super fund only pays 15 per cent on income while the franking credit is at the company tax rate of 30 per cent. If they received the same dividend when they retired after age 60 from a pension paid by their superannuation fund, they would receive $28,571 because the income is then received tax free. The example above is rather simplistic and there are plenty of complexities in the tax system that need to be considered, but it

is clear that having your investments in the wrong structure can seriously handicap your real investment returns. Combining tax considerations with your investment decisions is vital to optimise after-tax returns. In consultation with your financial adviser and accountant, careful tax planning can meaningfully increase after-tax return, without taking on unnecessary additional risk.

BETTER SKATE PARKS Skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders will enjoy two improved facilities later this year. Construction on a major skate park upgrade at Alexandra Headland and minor works at Coolum is due to start in late April. The final design for Alex offers a modern and innovative skate park that includes many features the community asked for during the consultation period, including a split level advanced bowl, mini bowl and stair set. The park will be closed during construction, which should be completed in November. New retaining walls and improved rails are the first stage of upgrades at Coolum skate park ahead of further work in 2018. Both projects are funded through our Capital Works Program, which delivers a range of recreational projects for our community. A full list of skate parks and their facilities are listed on our website in the Beaches and Parks Directory.

PARKLANDS BLVD WORK Please allow for extra travel time, especially at peak periods, as our road crews work on Parklands Boulevard at Little Mountain over the next month. The resurfacing will provide a pavement capable of many years of performance. The project is part of our $23-million road reseal and rehabilitation program.

UPGRADE AT VALDORA Work will start soon to rehabilitate, widen and seal a 450-metre narrow section of Valdora Road, south of Celestial Court. The upgrade will help to improve safety for motorists and reduce dust and maintenance costs. Traffic management measures will be in place with completion expected within 10 weeks (weather permitting).

Do you organise events? Come to Sunshine Coast Events Network’s free event management workshop at Maroochydore Library, Friday, March 24, 9am to 11am. Topics include event planning and project management. Book via council’s website. If you have a business, I’m sure it would be very worthwhile for you to check out the councilfunded Level Up program, which has just been launched. Its goal is simple: to ensure our business community has the necessary skills and capacity to capitalise on the digital economy nationally and internationally. Our council has recognised that even though the NBN has already been deployed in some areas around Australia, their business communities have yet to fully realise its benefits through low adoption rates and/or a lack of ability to translate it into business benefits. Thanks to Level Up, we are not going to fall into that problem. We are proactively preparing and supporting our local business community by alerting them to the opportunities that the NBN, the digital economy and active innovation programs in their businesses can provide. We may not be the first region to gain the NBN and high-speed broadband, but we want to be a region that takes advantage of it. Go to levelup.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for more details, including upcoming free information sessions.

COURTS NET A MAJOR UPGRADE

Thousands of netballers will get to enjoy the experience of playing on 10 upgraded netball courts, which are the new showpiece feature of the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex. Sunshine Coast Lightning players Laura Scherian and Karla Mostert dropped by to see the action and meet the youngsters taking part in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sports Association Gala Day as council officially opened the new courts. Laura has fond memories of playing at Maroochydore as she developed the skills that have taken her to the Suncorp Super Netball competition. Funded by Council’s $253-million Capital Works Program and the Queensland Government under the Get Playing Plus Program, the upgrade also included new shade structures and water fountains to make visiting the Fishermans Road facility even better for players and spectators. The Maroochydore courts, at the southern end of the complex, are home to the Sunshine Coast Netball Association which boasts more than 2000 members.

OUR 50TH YEAR

TOMMY O’CONNOR – REMEMBER THE NAME His obituary in 1942 called him the founder of Maroochydore-Mooloolaba but, writes DOT WHITTINGTON, many Sunshine Coasters have probably never heard of Thomas O’Connor.

IMAGES: SUNSHINE COAST LIBRARIES

THIS MONTH IN HISTORY A new road was surveyed on the northern side of Petrie Creek Road, Nambour, and in March 1949, the plan was signed off, along with 33 allotments. Fairmeadows Road was built to link up with the existing Mt Pleasant Road and the northern end of the subdivision ran parallel to the cane tramline.

Thomas O’Connor (inset) built the coast’s first ‘resort’; Tom (centre) fishing in the Maroochy River in 1907 and (second left) on site at the new building

L

ike William Pettigrew, Thomas O’Connor didn’t leave a lot of park and street names in his honour, and yet, after Pettigrew’s empire collapsed in 1898, it was O’Connor who emerged as the next big player and visionary opening up the Coast. A surveyor, businessman and speculator, he was also a strong community supporter and philanthropist. When the new Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club was formed in 1916, Tommy O’Connor was a vice-president. He “very kindly donated all the necessary timber” for fencing the Maroochydore recreation reserve in 1924, and at the second official Maroochydore Show in 1927, provided a doll’s house “for the entertainment of the children”. The menfolk who attended the show’s ‘Fordson Crawler Tractor’ demonstration agreed it would lighten production costs for farmers. It was reported “Mr O’Connor was responsible for the visit of this mechanism for the man on the land and his anticipation that the demonstrations would provide of profound interest were fully realised”.

O’Connor’s rise started after the collapse of Pettigrew’s sawmilling venture in 1898 when he bought a large area of Pettigrew’s land between Cornmeal Creek and Picnic Point, the mill in 1903 and other Pettigrew properties at Mooloolaba from the bank. At the turn of the century, he was one of the most influential figures in Cotton Tree-Maroochydore. For a time, he ran a boat service in the Maroochy River, but sold his vessels Hazeldean and Alexandra to Percy Evans in 1919. Tommy surveyed the first allotments in Alexandra Headland in 1915. He chose the street names for his sisters, Alice, Kate, Janet and Mary, who owned the guest house at Alexandra Headland for many years. At the time, the area was called Potts Point. He renamed it in honour of Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII. In January 1921, the Mooloolah River Progress Association, decided to name the township rapidly springing up ‘Mooloolahbah’ and O’Connor donated a “large piece of land near the blocks recently sold for a sports ground.” His dream though, was to build a

Live a colourful life at Aura

high-quality seaside resort a “magnificent residential hotel”. The 36-bedroom hostel with reception and dining room, cafe, verandas, two shelters and laundry was built during 1926 to 1928 on the hillock behind Alex beach. It was designed to accommodate 70 guests and was surrounded by about 180 acres including sports areas covering 36 acres. Although a visionary who recognised the value of coastal land, Tom O’Connor didn’t see the Great Depression coming and in the 1930s, his Alexandra Park was placed in the hands of the Commonwealth Government and he followed Pettigrew into insolvency. In 1945, the Presbyterian Church bought a major portion of his resort property for use as a venue for conferences and camps. The Chronicle’s obituary for O’Connor on September 25, 1942, reported: “A remarkable resident of the North Coast passed away on Wednesday evening in the person of Mr Thomas O’Connor, of Alexandra Headland, at the age of 85 years. Maroochydore and Mooloolaba are thus parted from the man entitled to be called their founder.”

DID YOU KNOW? • ‘Mr Kawana’ Noel Burns famously said “the best land for canals is swamp land”. The first two canals near the mouth of the Mooloolah River were Paringa and Barralong (at rear in photo) in 1968. Kawana Estates boasted it had “one mile of canals”. • A Buderim Mountain Sugar Mill was established in 1881. It had failed by the end of the decade. The 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated on August 1, 2017. In the lead-up to the occasion, My Weekly Preview will each week take a look into our region’s past. If you have any historical photos or stories email: editorial@myweeklypreview.com.au.

MAROOCHYDORE TOWNHOMES MOST AFFORDABLE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST

Artist Impression

Mr Emmerton said Reed Property Group’s research indicated that Locale would be popular with first home owners and first-time investors.

RPG CEO Jay Emmerton and RPG Marketing Agent Cathie Price onsite at Locale

Reed Property Group is set to develop the Sunshine Coast’s most affordable townhomes on an 8,000sqm elevated site in central Maroochydore. RPG has already achieved strong pre-sales within the 40 strata title townhome development to be built on the site at 2 Allora Drive. The $16 million development known as Locale will comprise 26 two-bedroom townhomes priced from $389,000 and 14 three-bedroom townhomes starting at $419,000. RPG CEO Jay Emmerton said he had received good feedback about the model, which presents affordable townhomes in a market which has few direct competitors. “Sites at a realistic price to deliver affordable product are very hard to come by,” he said. “We made a conscious decision to deliver the best product possible for an affordable price.”

31.indd 1

Kebabs are a quick and easy family meal and are perfect for entertaining dinner guests, making a tasty accompaniment to a healthy salad. Patersons Cooking School director Demi Paterson shares her recipe for delicious lamb kofta kebabs. Ingredients: SERVE WITH • 500g lamb mince hummus • 3 garlic cloves and lemon • 50g pine nuts, toasted wedges • 1 brown onion, finely chopped • 50g fresh breadcrumbs • 50ml olive oil • 2 teaspoons salt • 1 tsp ground ginger • 1 tbs cumin seeds • 1 tbs coriander seeds • 2 tsp cinnamon • ½ cup flat leaf parsley, finely chopped • Lemon wedges to serve Method: 1. In a frying pan, gently heat the cinnamon, coriander, cumin, ginger and salt until the seeds start to pop and release their flavour. 2. Remove from the pan and grind in a

spice grinder or mortar and pestle. 3. Saute the onion and garlic on a low heat until translucent. 4. Stir in the spice mixture and cook for a further five minutes. 5. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. 6. In a bowl, place the lamb mince, onion-garlic-spice mixture, pine nuts, breadcrumbs and parsley and mix well. 7. Divide the mixture into six portions and mould each portion around a skewer. 8. Cook kofta on a high heat on a barbecue or on the stovetop for around 10 minutes, turning every couple of minutes to ensure the kofta are cooked evenly.

IRISH CHARM ARRIVES FOR ST PATRICK’S DAY

Caloundra resident Michael Hughes fell in love with Caloundra 20 years ago and the Irishman never left. Hughes went on to becomes the lead singer in the Irish band Sásta, which means happy in Gaelic, and is the producer of the Heart of Ireland show,

which features Stephen Carolan, the two-time world champion Irish dancer, who is flying in from Dublin to perform. Hughes is excited to bring the show to Caloundra. “The Irish dancers have all previously been in shows such as Riverdance. Also starring in the show is Irish Joe Lynch, an enchanting, award-winning storyteller from County Cork, and the spectacular singing voice of Belfast’s very own Katherine Allan who lives locally and is employed by Henzells Caloundra,” he says. “Let us take you on a trip, through the glens of Antrim, to the ring of Kerry, we will have stories and fiery traditional Irish music and dance.” The Heart of Ireland is on at The Events Centre, Caloundra on March 17 at 8pm. Tickets are $59.90.

AIR MUSEUM WELCOMES SPECIAL GUESTS Captain America and Marilyn Monroe made an appearance at the Queensland Air Museum recently. Models dressed as the distinct icons were captured by Adelaide photographer Leigh Harding in the QAM Caribou. The backdrop of more than 75 historic aircraft also attracted Alex Camelia and his MAZDA 3 MP, possibly the fastest street legal Mazda in the world, reaching 320 kilometres per hour in fifth gear, was accompanied by Darren Brookes’ MAZDA 6 MPS with a ‘built’ Garrett GTX 3076 motor for a photoshoot at the QAM. While many of us have been keeping cool inside, the dedicated volunteers at the QAM have been hard at work physically moving historic aircraft to get the recently restored Lockheed Ventura undercover.

SYLVIA SET TO MELT HEARTS Jesse Hana Ellison and Shaun Bennett take to the stage to portray Sylvia and Greg, whose paths cross in an unexpected way and whose lives are forever changed as a result. Ellison and Bennett are joined by Kath Rose as Greg’s wife Kate and director Linda Gefken, who takes on three smaller character roles of Tom, Phyllis and Leslie, in the Coolum Theatre Player’s interpretation and production of Sylvia. In the play, Greg, a financial broker whose career is winding down, brings home a dog he found at Stumer’s Creek bearing only the name Sylvia on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives. Sylvia is on at the Coolum Civic Centre with six performances from March 17 to 26. Tickets are $28 adults and $22 members. For a schedule, visit coolumtheatre.com.au.

SEE THE LATEST IN OPEN-PLAN, LOW-MAINTENANCE LIVING

A

ward-winning over 50s developer Halcyon has opened the doors to four new display homes as it releases stage three of its new lifestyle community, Halcyon Lakeside at Bli Bli. Project Director Chris Carley says the opening of the display homes is one of several milestone moments for the third Halcyon community to be constructed on the Sunshine Coast and enables purchasers to experience the quality of homes and designs available in the upcoming Panorama release. “Our four new display homes showcase the latest in open-plan, low-maintenance living,” he says. “Interest has been so high, the first two stages have sold out in record time in response to Halcyon Lakeside’s superb lakefront positioning at the entry to the master-planned Parklakes 2 community.” The Panorama release will feature 20 homes situated on some of the most elevated locations in the community and are within a hop, skip and a jump from the lifestyle and recreational precinct. The Halcyon Lakeside community is

framed by a vista of natural bushland on a unique 13-hectare site overlooking two lakes with 450 metres of lake frontage and access to six kilometres of walking tracks. “Our purchasers are also attracted to our bigger homes with a feeling of space and lifestyle facilities that are without peer in this market and of course there are no exit fees with our model,” Carley says. The sell-out of the first two stages

prompted the early release of stage three, with homes in the latest Panorama 2 release now selling. Carley says the latest release is situated on elevated blocks of land, some of which will get outstanding panoramic views. For early buyers, it is all about choice, with the ability to personalise home designs to suit individual style. Construction has also commenced on the community’s multimillion-dollar lifestyle and recreational precinct, which has a resort pool, championship-sized bowling green, tennis court, pickleball courts plus a health and wellness centre. The centrepiece of the lifestyle and recreational precinct is the recreation club, which houses the cinema, library and substantial lounge areas that open to a lovely northern aspect and tree-lined panoramic views.

To inspect the new display homes or view plans for the latest release of energy efficient homes in stage three, please phone 1800 050 555.

HOW FORMER ROYAL BALLET DANCER KEEPS FIT

ormer dancer with the British Royal Ballet, Michael Ingleton, teaches a twice-weekly tai chi class with his partner, Torjborn Olsson within Hibiscus Buderim Meadow’s retirement community, giving back while getting some exercise in the process. Ingleton has danced his way around the world starting ballet training in Sri Lanka before moving to London to audition and be accepted into the Royal Ballet School. He danced for six years with the likes of Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fontaine in the Royal Ballet Company. From London and on to Paris, Michael was at Le Lido for ten years where he met his partner, Torjborn. “Being in the Royal Ballet was incredible.

All the reasons to choose

It was the 60s and London in the 60s was roaring and wonderful,” Ingleton smiles. “I am very lucky because we are still in contact with a lot of the people we danced with in London and Paris. It’s lovely to keep in touch with them because we haven’t aged at all in our eyes.” Ingleton and Olsson moved to Hibiscus Buderim Meadow’s retirement community six years ago. Following on from their love of dance, Ingleton and Olsson began to teach themselves tai chi. “We started with about 15 people in our class – and now we have almost 40. We do two classes a week on a Monday and Thursday at nine o’clock,” Ingleton says. Ingleton and Olsson feel it’s a

wonderful way to give back to the community they live in and in the meantime, get some regular exercise. Ingleton and Olsson love eating, drinking, listening to music and watching films and if there is one lesson these happy Hibiscus Buderim Meadows residents recommend to live by it is, “Live as you want to live, not as somebody else wants you to live.”

LIVE IN PARADISE WITH TOTAL PEACE OF MIND

I

magine living in a street where everyone has the same interests as you, where most of your neighbours are also retired and there are no rentals. Imagine being in a secure gated community where your home is safe, your lawns are looked after while you are away and you return from a cruise or a caravanning holiday to find your home exactly as you left it. Now, that’s peace of mind. Imagine having your own indoor heated pool, bowling green, tennis court, bar, spa, cinema, library lounge, workshop, massage room, Teppanyaki bar, semi-commercial kitchen that you, as a homeowner, can use whenever you want. Then, there’s the state of the art leisure centre. Imagine going for a brisk walk along the nature trail adjacent to your home or swimming laps of the indoor heated pool next door before breakfast. In just a one minute’s walk, you are joining friends and neighbours for a game of mahjong, tennis, 500 or a movie in the cinema. Imagine enjoying a glass of crisp sauvignon blanc or a glass of rich shiraz

beside the dancefloor while your neighbours show you their flair with a gypsy tap or jive. Imagine you are finally retired and are able to live amongst the rainforest, with native birds, native trees, natural rainforest, and then imagine it was also affordable and could be yours.

Can you see yourself living in a community where every day is a Saturday and every day feels like you are on holidays? Why would you live anywhere else? With no exit fees, no stamp duty and no rentals, it means that should you choose to sell your home down the track, you will keep all the capital gain. This is an important point of difference with the Nature’s Edge financial model. Stage three, the magnificent Pinnacle, is being released soon and is now open for deposits. This prime north-east facing location is wrapped around the multimillion-dollar leisure centre and set amongst the unspoiled natural foliage of Nature’s Edge. With home prices starting at only $435,000 for two bedrooms plus multi-purpose room and lock up garage, the dream is affordable and we have a home to suit you.

MADE IN CHINA The Haval H6 might be the car that changes our thinking about Chinese-made vehicles. WORDS: Peter Atkinson, AAP.

D

ongfeng. Fudi. Youngman. Polar Sun. No, they’re not the members of some crazy Asian boy band. In fact they’re all automobile manufacturers – and they’re all from China. The rising giant Asian nation has almost 50 separate car makers, with dozens more sub-brands as well. So far, only a handful of these Chinese marques have made it into showrooms in Australia. Let’s be honest – with a market of more than a billion people they’re probably not short of buyers.

But as China continues its march towards full-blown capitalism and further expands its trade horizons, no doubt we’ll see more of these nameplates on our roads. It’s fair to say they still have some challenges in the image department – thanks to the questionable build quality of some models and negative perceptions about their levels of technology. When it comes to the acceptance of Chinese vehicles, this might just be the car that changes our thinking: the Haval H6 – the latest model release from China’s biggest and

most ambitious carmaker. The H6 is not a groundbreaking machine in itself – nor is it particularly outstanding when stacked up against market rivals. But it’s significant because it may be the first model to make us take Chinese-built cars seriously. Previously, they’ve been cheap, and not much else. Some pretty ordinary styling, and even more ordinary build quality. But this one is different. It’s quite stylish. And it’s very nicely put together. The Haval arrives at a tasty price, as you’d expect, but it marries that with the features we’d expect from higher-priced rivals. The H6 is the biggest-selling SUV in its native China – where it sold more than 80,000 units in December alone. The design is penned by Haval Design Director Pierre Leclerq – not a typically Chinese name – who says he set out to make the vehicle “simple but strong”. It looks modern and acceptably stylish with crisp, economical lines and nice proportions. The design of the rear hatch and roofline, in particular, is eye-catching. Inside it’s similarly inoffensive – logical, modern layout with decent ergonomics, impressive finishes and plenty of kit. Even the entry-level model delivers 17-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera and blind spot monitoring.

Mechanically, it’s pretty sound. Its two-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers zippy performance. Interior finishes are hard to fault. Instruments are clear and classy, complemented by a vivid colour information panel that informs the driver about everything from average fuel economy and cruising range to tyre pressures and temperatures. It’s pretty impressive stuff. Its best feature? Well, that would be the pricetag. So remember the name – and don’t be surprised if you see a lot more Havals on the road in the months ahead.

HAVAL H6 PREMIUM HOW FAST? With 145kW it offers as much acceleration as any family might need.

HOW BIG? It sits in the medium SUV category which pits it against Mazda’s mighty CX-5, Nissan’s X-Trail and the Mitsubishi Outlander. It offers good interior space although cargo capacity is a little disappointing.

HOW THIRSTY? Its official combined consumption of 9.8L/100km is on the high side.

HOW MUCH? With a $29,990 driveaway price it makes a compelling value case with high levels of equipment and impressive finishes.

By placing the rumpus area on the ground floor, along with two of the four bedrooms, the second and third levels of the home have been used to create a resort styled, sanctuary for both parents and their guests. • Perfect for the family with older children, the ground floor contains 2 bedrooms plus a massive breakout area, with direct access to outdoor kitchen, entertaining deck and pool. • On level two, not only does the kitchen provide a professional level of appliances it too offers its chef of the day spectacular views out across the lake. • The third level, the parents retreat has to be seen to be fully appreciated. This is not just a large master suite, it’s palatial. The ensuite boasts an indoor garden within its dual shower room and a two person bath. As you would expect there is also a separate and cavernous walk in dressing room. • You have to see this home to appreciate it’s space, style and luxury lifestyle appointments.

PRINT + ONLINE PUTS MORE MONEY IN YOUR POCKET A small investment in print advertising will result in a better outcome for the sale of your property. By adding MWP to your campaign, your property is seen by thousands more people ople than just those browsing online. This means more people will see your home, potentiallyy increasing competition and leading to a higher sale price. This could amount to an additional $10,000, $15,000, $20,000 or even more money in your pocket!

When using print advertising in MWP on average I get 3 to 4 times the number of prospective buyers coming through open homes which in turn provides more competition and higher prices being achieved for my sellers. Here is proof: Take the most recent example at Platinum Properties - 9 properties listed for sale in the past 4 weeks with 5 of the 9 vendors investing in solid internet and print media marketing

campaigns (4 auctions and 1 private treaty) with the following results: • 2 sold prior to auction • 1 sold under the hammer • 1 sold immediately post auction • The private treaty sale selling within 2 weeks The other 4 properties are still on the market.

AGENT PROFILE My Property Preview had a chat with Kate Jewry from Property Today about life in, and outside of, the real estate market. What was your first job? My very first part-time job was working in the kitchen at Pizza Hut, wearing a terrible A–line wrap-around skirt that you couldn’t get that pizza smell out of. My first full-time job was a travel agent and that was where my love of travel began. What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast? We are too spoilt with choice here for beautiful spots, but having lived in Cotton Tree for over 12 years, the river mouth and surrounds holds a very special place in my heart. Describe your perfect day? Good weather and a good book, relaxing and swimming at the beach followed by a lovely long lunch with friends will always do it for me. What is the best holiday you have ever had? South Africa was one of the most special trips of my life and a recent holiday to Hawaii’s north shore visiting friends and being surrounded by beauty has got them both tied for that position. How long have you worked in the real estate business and what attracted you to it in the first instance? I stumbled into the real estate game over 12 years ago after I sold my toy shop, Brightsparks, at Cotton Tree. Because of my love of people and helping them, it seemed a natural progression to go from selling doll’s houses to real houses. What was the first property you sold? A unit in Space The Residences, which was off plan

at Cotton Tree. What was your most recent sale? A wonderful home in Alex, where I again achieved above the sellers’ expectations. What do you love most about your job? Meeting new people, matching people with properties and delivering record prices for my sellers. What is the most difficult thing about your job? I really don’t enjoy clients missing out on properties through multiple offer scenarios. Bringing in signs after a long busy Saturday is not a huge thrill. What’s best – auction or private treaty? It is individual for each property and depending on the type of property, location and market. I take the avenue that is going to bring about the best result for my clients. How have you seen the property market change in the past 12 months? Buyer demand is continuing to increase with stock being difficult to match the enquiry. I live in beachside Maroochydore and have seen that area in particular continue to grow in demand and have had numerous record results in this pocket. How do you see it changing in the next 12 months? If only I had a crystal ball, but it all looks promising and the one thing that won’t change is my love of looking after my clients and delivering them the best results from all markets.

COLONIAL CHARM IN BUDERIM

N

estled in the escarpment of Buderim mountain, this colonial styled home offers the welcome subtleties of treetop living. Fresh natural breezes that pass through the north-east facing home all day long, leafy green outlook and privacy created by the beautifully established gardens. These natural comforts come with great ease of access to the Sunshine Coast’s finest schools, the university, hospitals, and a multitude of shopping precincts. The kiln-dried brush box timber floors that feature throughout the family home add character, comfort and warmth to the open-plan design.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Get ready peeps here we go again 2017 WSL! Who will win? I reckon there are about 10 contenders who can be there in December. Would be great for the Coast if Julian cracks it. Gold Coast has some bad onshore winds predicted for the event so hopefully the wind swings around to the south. Last week’s swell came too early. Same thing happened last year. Now locally, same onshore winds… damn. So get what you can.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream about in numbers working from the Maroochy Bar to Channel and Goat Island with yabbies and fowl gut best baits. Flathead are attracted to a mixture of lures and drifted baits along Twin Waters banks. A few mud crabs in the deeper channels up to the motorway bridge. Trevally and mangrove jack chasing bait in most canals. SURF: Some good holes between Maroochy Surf Life Saving Club and the Maroochy Bar, which have been returning quality bream at dawn and dusk using pilchards and mullet fillet. Kawana Beach is another hot spot on the night rising tides for better than average tailor. OFFSHORE: The close in reefs of Currimundi, Coolum and The Gneerings have been returning quality mixed reef fish on cut baits and squid. The Barwon Banks have been firing for pearl perch and snapper on pillies and squid. Be prepared to venture out wide when conditions allow. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam returning golden perch and bass with fish rising to the surface. The thermo-cline needs to be worked with shallow divers and floated live shrimps. Rotate colours of lures until the successful combination is found. Borumba Dam’s water level is low, so check accessibility to the boat ramp if taking your boat, before venturing out through Imbil.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20)

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21)

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21)

With the Sun charging into your sign (where it stays until April 20) rams are full of extra energy and enthusiasm. You’ll feel fiery, restless and rather rebellious but pace yourself or you’re likely to blow a fuse!

Have you been burning the candle at both ends? You’ve got a lot of commitments on your plate but try to put aside some special ‘me time’ this week. When it comes to a frustrating personal matter, avoid quick fixes.

With four planets stimulating your hopes and wishes zone, your motto for the week is from writer Gloria Steinem “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23)

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23)

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23)

Cautious crabs have a tendency to side-step problems. With four planets in Aries, it’s time to try a direct approach as you face challenges head on – especially at work. And a tricky relationship with a colleague may require some attention.

Don’t fence lions in! The Sun, Mercury, Uranus and retro Venus are all activating your adventure zone. So it’s time to experiment and explore, as you make the most of every minute of the day. You’re also keen to communicate with friends from far away.

When it comes to a complicated situation with a financial matter, a family member or a friend, all is not as it seems. So make sure you look a lot deeper so you can discover what’s really going on. There are many things that are hidden at the moment.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23)

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21)

If you expect loved ones to be cooperative then you’ll be disappointed, when they continue to surprise you. A family problem is brewing so do all you can to diffuse it diplomatically, as you discuss a subject you may not feel comfortable with.

Scorpio is the sign of intense extremes, and you can have trouble de-stressing and winding down. As we celebrate the Equinox on Monday (when day and night are of equal length) strive to bring more balance and relaxation into your busy world.

You’ll be hard to ignore as you ruffle a few feathers with your impulsive ideas and spontaneous shenanigans. With the Sun shifting into your entertainment zone, curiosity and enthusiasm are high. It’s Equinox week so try not to overdo things!

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20)

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19)

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20)

It’s Equinox week, so look for ways to achieve more balance in your busy life. And is your home the peaceful haven you’d like it to be? With Venus reversing through your domestic zone, it’s time to clean, de-clutter and beautify your living space.

The planets rev up your travel and adventure zones, so you’ve got a need for speed (which makes you more accident-prone than usual). Slow down! Less haste and more concentration will ensure you arrive at your destinations safe and sound.

Money tends to run through fish fingers like water – especially this week. So do your best to be disciplined and reign in extravagant spending. Plus make sure your plans are financially realistic. And don’t let fear of the future paralyse you.

THE LAST WORD

BACK AWAY FROM THE PHONE When your kids are asking if you’re addicted to your phone, it’s time to take stock, Richard O’Leary says.

I

never knew cutting my boys’ screen time would be so painful – for me. I know this is a topic I bang on about a bit (it was the subject of my first feature story for My Weekly Preview), but I find it as seductive as a message popping up on my iPhone. As regular readers would know we are pretty strict in the O’Leary household, our six- and eight-year-old boys are only allowed a movie on Friday nights. But I have to say in recent times we’ve relaxed that rule a little, and the results have reinforced why we were so tough in the first place. My wife has been teaching our boys at home for a couple of months after moving away from our much-loved school. One of the biggest things she has noticed is the direct correlation between screen time and concentration levels. Put simply, the more time our boys spend in front of a computer, television or tablet, the less concentration they have the

next day. So my wife and I decided to bite the bullet and return to the original regime, and to lead by example we banned ourselves from mobile devices in front of the boys. Which sounds fine in theory but it has been tougher than I thought it would be. Playing on my phone has become second nature to me – checking for emails, searching for news, dropping into BuzzFeed, getting the latest rugby league results, monitoring the Parra footy forum, trying to solve a quick crossword, or attempting a game of Scrabble. I’d find myself picking up my phone without thinking about it, until I catch myself, or worse still, am found out by my kids. “Are you addicted Dad?”, my eldest asked. And on the evidence he has a point. Social psychologist Adam Alter, author of Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked defines addiction as “something you enjoy doing in the short term, that undermines your wellbeing in the long term — but that

you do compulsively anyway.” Dr Alter recently told the New York Times we are not figuratively addicted – but literally addicted to screens. “In the past, we thought of addiction as mostly related to chemical substances: heroin, cocaine, nicotine. Today, we have this phenomenon of behavioural addictions where, one tech industry leader told me, people are spending nearly three hours a day tethered to their cell phones.” He believes we are biologically vulnerable to this sort of dependency with each swipe, ping and update releasing a small dose of dopamine in our brain. The rush of this feel-good drug makes us feel great in the short term, but over time we build tolerance and want more. So what’s the solution? He suggests self-moderation. But I’ll let you in on a little secret – the good doctor still sleeps with his phone next to his bed. What hope is there for the rest of us? olearylastword@gmail.com
