OUR STORY

he only problem I would have with plastic surgery is where to start. But for an increasing number of Australians that doesn’t seem to be a problem, with plenty ready to splash the cash in the hope they will look and feel better. Is this all about self-improvement or self-obsession? That’s the question Candice Holznagel tries to answer in our cover story. Also this week, you get the chance to meet a local doctor and optometrist who travels to Vanuatu every year to improve the health of locals, and you can also have a quick chat with one of Australia’s most successful swimming coaches as she prepares her athletes for the Olympics, beginning in Rio next week. As well, there’s news and views, style and socials, motoring and makeovers, and of course, plenty of property, including all the latest industry news. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. QUICK CHAT

READY FOR RIO

Olympic medallist and University of the Sunshine Coast swimming coach Jan Cameron is about to take seven swimmers to the Rio Paralympics. WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

son represented at that Olympics. My husband and family all joined me there. Great Olympics. In fact, best ever of the many I’ve been to.

I live in beautiful Maroochydore by the river.

FIRST JOB?

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

I began coaching while still at uni and got paid for it. I loved it and would have done it for free.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

When I was offered a job coaching a little team in Port Kembla for $1000 a season. Found out I love coaching and have never looked back.

Preparing a squad of seven for Rio Paralympics.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES… Mum and Dad have passed away. I have two brothers and their families and a loving, caring husband and his family.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Don’t have any. We all need to use our experiences for improvement and to move forward.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

Used to be called ‘Murph’ as my maiden name was Murphy but now it’s just Jan.

FIRST CAR? A little old Ford Anglia donated by an ageing aunt in Sydney.

FAVOURITE BOOK? I love reading and across a few genres, especially crime novels and some biographies, but The Rosie Project was very interesting. I also enjoyed The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? An Ian Rankin novel.

FAVOURITE SONG? Lady in Red is one of my favourites, but I like to belt out some Beatles songs and some Tina Turner on my car radio when I’m driving alone.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Just focus on what you can do. Don’t look behind, rather always look ahead.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Three and a half years and lovin’ it! I’ve done a lot of travelling. Spent my youth up to 25 in Sydney and Wollongong (uni), then 6.5 years in Canada, two years in Nashville, Tennessee, three years in Canberra then another five years in Canada, then 24 years in New Zealand before returning to Australia.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? Great weather, relaxed lifestyle and great opportunities, especially in coaching at USC.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Relaxing at the many beaches and parks and my home, which we bought off the plan, so were able to design what we wanted.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Having Blake Cochrane get three world records in 2015 in the breaststroke and to see the swimmers I coach improve each cycle. Having the whole squad at USC make the Rio Paralympics. The job I did in turning around NZ swimming and to have put 20 Olympians onto the NZ team.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m relaxing at my home with my husband Kevin, surrounded by family.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? People who say they will do something and don’t.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS?

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

Now I just try to find a way to achieve what it is they don’t do.

Usually around to the beaches, coffee shops and up to Montville for the view.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Enjoy life and keep your friends and family close by.

Nothing. Just to have continuing opportunities for keeping it relaxed but with good services. I’d love Bradman Ave to be one way so the traffic isn’t as busy.

I love great cafe mocha and I also like herbal teas like peppermint and chamomile.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Rugby, NRL and netball. I’m proud of our teams and especially the Matildas.

Sydney 2000. I coached at the Sydney Olympics and my

IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION

Going under the knife or the needle is fast becoming the norm – but how does it affect our self-worth? WORDS: Candice Holznagel

T

he elevator doors open and the sound of my heels echoes through the hall as I approach the shiny, glass doors of Cottontree Injectable Clinic. Everything is as you would expect. A smiling, smooth-faced receptionist kindly gestures towards the seating area. The small lobby is clean, serene and dotted with glossy fashion and beauty magazines. The young women smiling up from the magazines offer a promise: “You too can look like this.’’ Before long I am ushered into the office of registered nurse Sue Dwyer. We size each other up. She is welcoming and has an air of professionalism emanating from her clothes and mannerisms, through to her smooth forehead and full lips. I don’t hold back: “Your eyes keep flicking to my forehead.’’ She pauses and then laughs. “You express strongly in your forehead. Anti-wrinkle treatments will help,’’ she says matter-of-factly. Dwyer doesn’t oversell or undersell; she is pleasant, yet direct. “You’ve got good skin so you’d get a good result. What happens is, in time the skin starts to change and the texture changes so it becomes harder to treat.” In her 15 years in cosmetic practice, Dwyer has treated her fair share of women 12 My Weekly Preview | July 29, 2016

12.indd 1

ranging in age from their early 20s right through. She currently has a number of 80-year-old women who visit her clinic on a regular basis. She offers free consultations and discusses medical history, expectation, side-effects, results and ongoing treatment plans with each patient under the guidance of a doctor. “We use anti-wrinkle treatment for dynamic lines, more of your foreheads, frown lines, crow’s feet,’’ Dwyer explains. “There are minimal risks… with fillers there can be bruising and swelling. (Fillers

Procedures ranging from fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, laser treatments, breast augmentation and liposuction have become a billion-dollar industry. According to national consumer watchdog Choice, Australians now spend more on cosmetic procedures per capita than Americans. Annually, 16,000 Australians get breast implants while 15,000 undergo liposuction and around $300 million is spent on anti-wrinkle injections, the ABC reports. The Sun, Sea, Sand, Silicone Project – a major international study – revealed that

“No longer content to just keep up with the Jones’, we feel a pressure to keep up with the Kardashians” Dr Rhiannon Bell, psychologist

are for) lips, cheeks, temples. Any area of volume loss.” A quick calculation and I’m told my three-monthly treatment – should I choose to go ahead with it – will cost around $385. There is an ever-growing investment in beauty, with cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery on the rise in Australia.

Australians part with $300 million a year on cosmetic surgery tourism, with an estimated 15,000 people heading overseas to go under the knife. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports 20 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed worldwide in 2014, with Botox topping the list.

Dwyer confirms the growing investment and interest in cosmetic procedures and says while the majority of her client base is women in the 30 to 60 age bracket, fillers are growing in popularity with the younger generation. “I have younger girls, those 18 and up, who want Kylie Jenner lips. “I can’t always give them Kylie lips.’’ She pauses and glances at my face before adding: “I couldn’t achieve Kylie lips on you.’’ Love them or hate them, reality queens Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are influencing society’s definition of beauty. These young women, with their sculptured, shiny and lasered bodies, have blurred and redrawn the lines of beauty and style. For all her critics, Kardashian has just as many supporters – if not more – of her selfie-taking, body-flaunting ideals. Jenner, meanwhile, has launched a million-dollar lip kit line directly off the interest created around her own cosmetically perfected pout. These celebrities are contributing to the global message: whether it’s thin lips, a flat bottom or chest, there is nothing that can’t be changed. In Australia it’s about to get a little tougher for teens, with the Medical Board of Australia issuing new guidelines for medical practitioners who perform cosmetic and surgical procedures. myweeklypreview.com.au

26/07/2016 2:53:13 PM

The guidelines, which come into force in October, apply to all practitioners, including specialist plastic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons and physicians, regardless of qualifications. According to the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, currently it is legal for any Australian doctor with a basic medical degree to perform surgery because cosmetic procedures are not recognised as a speciality. However, specialist plastic surgeons have a minimum 12 years of medical and surgical education. Medical Board chair Dr Joanna Flynn says the new guidelines will help keep patients safe, without imposing “unreasonable regulatory burden” on practitioners. The new guidelines include a seven day cooling-off period for all adults before major procedures and a three month cooling-off period for major procedures for all under 18s in addition to a mandatory evaluation by a psychologist, GP or psychiatrist. Clinical psychologist Dr Rhiannon Bell from Family Challenge Psychology Clinic says there is an increased visual pressure for both men and women to conform to a particular image. “Reality TV shows of the rich and famous visiting their plastic surgeon and talking with their girlfriends about their Botox and boob job have certainly contributed to more social acceptance of cosmetic procedures,’’ Bell says. “No longer content to just keep up with the Jones’, we feel a pressure to keep up with the Kardashians. The constant stream of perfect pouts on social media has likely also influenced women’s perceived pressure to live up to a certain image. Cosmetic procedures are now more accessible and affordable to women than they ever have been.’’ Bell says living in an appearanceobsessed society comes at a price. “The link between body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem has long been an issue for women. When asked: “What contributes to your self-esteem?” many young women that I

myweeklypreview.com.au

13.indd 1

see struggle to provide a response beyond “my appearance”. “Without a solid foundation of self-acceptance, and lacking an established sense of identity, young women may be more vulnerable to believing that having a certain cup size, the perfect pout, and taut face will help them to feel happier and more confident in themselves. When one’s self-confidence is based solely on beauty, and when that perception of beauty is based on unrealistic perfectionistic standards, then we have a problem. “Self-confidence that is skin deep is temporary and provides a false pretence of confidence. Establishing a foundation of self-acceptance and building upon that with a variety of things that may contribute to self-confidence will lead to a much more sustained sense of confidence and healthier identity

Sue Dwyer “Aesthetic beauty should not define who women are. Beauty encapsulates so much of a woman’s complexity and depth – her kindness and compassion, uniqueness and individuality, intelligence and wisdom, strength and personality, love and resilience.’’ However, Bell acknowledges that many women undergo cosmetic surgeries for different reasons. “Not all women who undergo cosmetic procedures are doing it to gain

acceptance from society or to conform to a certain ideal image. There are many instances in which women undergo cosmetic procedures just for themselves so that they feel more feminine and more confident in who they are. “If this is the only way in which a woman thinks that she may be able to rebuild her confidence and feel happy then she may be taking too narrow a view of herself, yet if she is engaging in self-acceptance and self-esteem from a holistic viewpoint, then the desire for more subtle cosmetic procedures may be coming from a healthier perspective.” For 25-year-old medical professional Kristen, the decision to go under the knife was not based on societal pressures. A little over a year ago she had breast augmentation surgery at Sydney’s Cosmetic Institute – something she had never contemplated until recently. “Throughout my teenage years and early 20s I never had any issues with the way I looked, I was confident and content with my body,’’ she says. “After getting involved in fitness my body started to change and I became increasingly aware that I was losing my boobs. It was something I became self-conscious about. I looked out of proportion and didn’t feel feminine.’’ After six months of research, she opted to go ahead with the surgery. “I was concerned about what people were going to think of me and my decision to get the surgery. I was worried I would be judged and stereotyped as a bimbo,’’ Kristen says. “I am happy with my decision and I know it was the right decision for me. Making the change has removed an element of stress and self-doubt from my life. It’s hard not to compare yourself to what you see on Instagram... what everyone else seems to find appealing. “However, I do like to think that a lot of my confidence comes from my success in my career and personal life. “I think plastic surgery is a personal decision and as long as someone is

Kylie Jenner’s famously enhanced lips making an informed and independent decision to have it done, then they deserve support.” Fellow Coast resident Rachelle underwent breast augmentation surgery nine years ago for similar reasons. “All I ever wanted was to have breasts – I have an athletic build and less than an A cup so it always affected my confidence,’’ she tells My Weekly Preview. “I was always afraid I look masculine and I couldn’t fit into dresses. When I first had them done I told people, because I went from an A cup to a D cup. I keep quiet about it now as they aren’t fake to me anymore, they are mine. “My procedure was 90 per cent inside and 10 per cent outside. I feel like a woman now – I should have been born with these, but I wasn’t. You have to love yourself no matter what. I encourage my girlfriends to look at themselves in the mirror naked and accept and love everything.’’ Dr Bell says the message of accepting ourselves is a positive one. “As women, we need to stop critiquing ourselves and others by a standard of perfection and start to encourage and praise much deeper attributes. Let’s start to change the culture in our own friendship circles by celebrating and esteeming all that is beautiful in the women around us.”

KEN REED RESIGNS Coast developer Ken Reed has announced his resignation as chairman of the board from Reed Property Group after almost 30 years with the company. It’s part of a long-term plan which was executed in 2014 and sought to see the property family hand over the reins to the RPG Board of Directors, including Jay Emmerton who was appointed CEO. Reed says he feels confident resigning. “It’s been a wonderful journey and I am proud to have been part of an organisation that has contributed to both the skyline of the Sunshine Coast and the creation of new communities across Queensland.”

Mayor Mark Jamieson has been appointed the new patron of Sunshine Coast charity SunnyKids. SunnyKids CEO Chris Turner says, “If we can effect change in the lives of the 1000 children currently identified as vulnerable simply because they lack the necessary protective factors to keep them safe and nurtured, then not only will we prevent them from ever having to enter into homelessness, violence or crime, but we will improve their health, wellbeing and employment trajectories making the return on SunnyKids work for the Sunshine Coast exponential.”

The Sunshine Coast sciences sector this week voiced its opinion about growing Queensland’s biomedical and life sciences industry and creating high-tech jobs. Researchers and industry leaders were asked to contribute to the State Government’s Biomedical and Life Sciences Roadmap at a special consultation session at Maroochydore. State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham says the government wants to generate the high-tech jobs of the future by taking our growing community of research centres and startup companies to a national and global level. myweeklypreview.com.au

GIVING MORE THAN MEDICINE A local medic who has volunteered his time in Vanuatu for 20 years is astounded by how happy the people are. Words: Leigh Robshaw

S

ippy Downs optometrist and doctor, Professor Leo Hartley has been visiting Vanuatu regularly for the past 20 years with a group of medical volunteers as part of the Vanuatu Prevention of Blindness project. Hartley returned from his latest trip in early June and spoke to My Weekly Preview about the work he does treating and educating the Ni-Vanuatu men, women and children about health. “We take a team to really remote areas which we do in consultation with the local Ni-Vanuatu health department,” says Hartley. “We treat an enormous amount of tropical ulcers caused by yaws, a disease that’s similar to syphilis but not transmitted sexually; it’s transmitted by touch or flies. Flies come off a tropical ulcer and go onto someone else with a cut. Whole villages of children lose their eardrums. “When the children get into their upper teens and early adulthood, they have lots of pterygia, the fleshy growth that grows across the cornea. Over there they tend to grow right across because no one has seen them or knows how to

%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE

Professor Leo Hartley with a local patient and Dr Ann Miller from Victoria manage them. In the older folk we see terribly dense cataracts. In some of these really remote areas the teachers, when they hit 40, they can’t read anymore, just for want of a pair of reading glasses and so they retire. It’s really devastating. From an optometry point of view, the biggest thing is just giving them glasses.” On his most recent trip, Hartley said he treated a lot of hypertension caused by a high salt diet of root vegetables cooked in sea water.

INSPIRED QUALITY

“They have massively high blood pressures. If you go into an average remote village there, you say where’s all the old people? They’re all dead; they’ve had strokes from high blood pressure.” Hartley says type 2 diabetes is also a big problem due to a diet high in sugar and rice. “The thing is, people over there don’t complain,” Hartley says. “It is what it is. They line up for a clinic and it’s actually a bit terrifying as a doctor. The line

stretches out and you think, I can only see one patient at a time. They line up and they’re just calm and talking, they don’t get uptight. In Australia if that was the case you’d have people whingeing and moaning. These people are so happy – that’s what gets me.” Hartley, an associate professor at the University of Melbourne, balances his humanitarian work with running his business H2 Vision at Sippy Downs, and conducting research into a cure for retinopathy in premature babies with a colleague from Townsville. But it’s the work in Vanuatu that makes him feel the most like “a true health professional”. “People say: why do you do it? It’s good medicine. You feel crazy, there’s times you think, if only I could order some bloods and imaging, but you can’t. All you have is your hands and your mind and you have to think.” Professor Hartley and his colleagues pay for their own flights and donate their time. The group is seeking a volunteer to develop a website to cater for Australian optometrists and their Ni-Vanuatu students. To help, contact Hartley at H2 Vision Centres, Sippy Downs.

TRAVEL

Christ the Redeemer, one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, watches over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

RIO GUIDE: FROM SAMBA TO SAFETY Don’t wait for your baby to smile at you – just go to Rio. It’s unlike any other city. By Jenny Barchfield

W

ith the Olympics just a couple of weeks away, Brazil faces a litany of problems: an economy in freefall, the Zika virus and a political crisis with an impeached president. But for those brave enough to make the trip, Rio de Janeiro is a city rich with potential rewards. Broadcasters have already deemed the city’s backdrop for the Summer Games the most telegenic ever. But no matter how good this teeming seaside metropolis – where the urban jungle and the literal jungle meet – looks on TV, footage simply can’t compare with the experience of actually being here. Here’s a Q&A on tips for visiting Rio, from staying safe to samba parties:

IS RIO SAFE? With an estimated 85,000 police and soldiers patrolling the streets during the games – twice the security contingent in London in 2012 – Olympic and local officials have insisted Rio will be “the safest city on earth” during the August 5–21 games. Still, violent crime is a fact of life in this city, starkly divided between haves and have-nots, so it’s best to keep a low profile. For Cariocas, as Rio’s six million residents are called, low-key dressing is de rigueur for both safety and practicality. Havaianas, the Brazilian flip-flop brand, are Rio’s uncontested footwear of choice. And the city’s goldensand beaches make board shorts and T-shirts, or hot pants and tank tops, a uniform for rich and poor alike. Watches and jewellery not clearly made from plastic are best avoided, as is using mobile phones in public or conspicuously carrying camera equipment. Electronics are extremely 22 My Weekly Preview | July 29, 2016

22.indd 1

expensive in Brazil, and a smartphone can cost several months’ worth of salary for locals, so it’s best to keep them under wraps. If you do get mugged, don’t react or fight. Hand over your possessions calmly and without hesitation. It’s only money and/or stuff. And no matter how much of a pain the ensuing nightmare of card cancellations proves, it’s not worth getting injured.

DO PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH? In a word, no. Outside Olympic venues and high-end hotels and restaurants, most Cariocas only speak Portuguese, though they might know a few words of English or Spanish. On the other hand, most people are eager to help foreigners and will resort even to pantomime to get their point across.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? If you go to one of the myriad ‘churrascaria’ all-you-can-eat Brazilian barbeque joints, the answer is meat, meat and more meat. Roving waiters brandishing spits stacked with cuts of

prime beef, lamb chops, pork sausages and even wizened black chicken hearts will insist on refilling your plate till you verge on bursting. For vegetarians or those recovering from a meat overdose, options are limited. Best bets include corner juice bars offering a cornucopia of freshly squeezed tropical fruit juices, as well as acai – a deep purple Amazonian palm berry that’s frozen, blended and served slushy.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN RIO? Plenty. And the good news is, the best things in Rio are free. Rio was hard hit by the recession, with the economy shrinking last year by four per cent, sending unemployment and inflation soaring. The nosedive of the local currency, the real, has made Rio much cheaper for visitors spending dollars or euros. But the cost of hotels and restaurants can still be shocking. Savvy travellers can staunch the bloodletting by taking advantage of the city’s many free attractions: Sugarloaf Mountain: The sheer

IMAGE: R.M. NUNES / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Brazilian woman during Carnaval 2016 street parade in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil granite outcropping that presides over the waters of the Guanabara Bay will no doubt prove a breathtaking backdrop for the Olympic sailing races. But rather than just ogling the iconic rock, why not hike it? A guide is necessary to scale the Sugarloaf itself, but its stumpier twin, the Morro da Urca, is doable without help. A mud path winds through tropical vegetation to a summit with peerless views over the city’s dense patchwork of towers, hillside ‘favela’ slums and mist-enshrouded rainforest. Sunset at Arpoador: Take in the sun’s spectacular nightly performance as it sinks into the Atlantic from atop the Arpoador rock formation in between Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches. The crowd there raucously applauds the glittering show, night after night. Pedra do Sal: Experience a ‘roda de samba’, or live samba music, at the birthplace of Brazil’s most famous musical genre. Monday nights bring hordes of aficionados to this former slave market in the Gamboa region of historic downtown for an open-air dance party. Centro: Rio’s beaches tend to steal the thunder, but the Centro downtown region, where the city got its start 451 years ago, is a treasure trove of colonialera churches and historic monuments. Perhaps the most stunning among them is the Mosteiro Sao Bento, a Baroque church and working monastery where monks perform Gregorian chants during Sunday Mass. Get there early to snag a seat. Also in Centro is the Portuguese Royal Reading Room, a 19th-century gem of soaring jacaranda hardwood bookshelves and stained glass windows, tucked into the newly rehabilitated Praca Tirdentes.

WHERE TO INVEST NEXT Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim. PORTFOLIO THEMES

T

he market outlook for the December half is one where the upside is being limited by persistent risks to global growth, yet the downside is also being curbed by central bank policy of keeping interest rates low, thereby limiting the returns from cash. With market sentiment oscillating between these forces, we see the ASX200 staying in the range it has been in for most of the past three years, with downside to 4900 where more value appears, and valuations stretched at around 5400. With such a backdrop, we reiterate our favoured themes for Australian equities – 1. Yield plus; 2. Declining Australian dollar (AUD) vs US dollar (USD); and 3. Structural growth and/or cycle defenders.

Yield plus: Our view is that the RBA will continue to reduce rates until the cash rate hits one per cent by mid-2017. This should remain supportive of yield strategies given a large gap between dividend yields and interest rates. We favour sectors like telecommunications and utilities, in particular we like Duet for the yield and AGL for its defensive characteristics. Perpetual is our key pick in financials. Companies that we like with ‘yield-plus’ qualities (lower yield but with dividend growth potential) include Westfield, Goodman Group and AMP. Declining AUD/USD: We expect the exchange rate to drop to 70 cents by year end and 65 cents by June 2017. Key ways to play a falling AUD/USD are: currency exchange traded fund (ETF) such as the Betashares USD ETF (USD); US Equity ETF (unhedged) such as the Betashares S&P500 Yield Maximiser (UMAX); and ASX-listed companies with large USD exposure such as Westfield, Treasury Wine, and Orora.

“. . .the RBA will continue to reduce rates until the cash rate hits one per cent. . .” Structural growth and/or cycle defenders: In a low growth world, sourcing earnings growth is difficult and limited to those who are either

beneficiaries of longer term structural trends, or have clearly defined strategies to drive growth and have balance sheets, which allow them to be opportunistic. Structural trends and the companies that we like that should benefit include superannuation, ageing population, technology and shifts in Chinese consumption. The cycle defenders are driving growth either through market share gains or acquisitions. Both of these companies have balance sheet capacity to make acquisitions and grow their market share. Of course the suitability of any of these stocks or sectors should be discussed with your financial adviser. Source: Ord Minnett Ltd Research

MY OPINION

B

THE GOSS ON BINDI AND BOB

SCOUNDRELS AND PATRIOTS

Bindi Irwin’s behaviour at her 18th birthday dinner left Sami Muirhead in shock.

Sunshine Coast lawyer Kyle Kimball says patriotism is no excuse for murder.

indi and Robert Irwin stopped me dead in my tracks this week. I was lucky enough to have dinner with a group of locals and the Irwin clan and I cannot tell you how impressive both Bindi and her little brother, Robert, are in person. The dinner was to celebrate Bindi turning 18. She wanted to share her milestone with local fans, so she held a radio competition to have a luxury meal under the stars at Australia Zoo. All those Kardashian clowns and supermodels no doubt spend their 18th in Ibiza putting pictures of their bikini bodies on Instagram and partying on private yachts. Bindi worked at her beloved zoo and chose to have an English breakfast tea over a wine to celebrate. My kids all love the Irwin kids. She has the same status in our house as Iron Man, Elsa and Luke Skywalker. We have some old DVDs where Bindi is only four or five years old and she is wrangling snakes and talking about her favourite sharks, all while beaming for the cameras and talking about saving the planet. I am proud if my kids pee in the vicinity of the actual toilet, so I cannot imagine the feeling of raising children with such a world conscience. Terri, you need to make room in your crazy schedule to write parenting books, because you have done an amazing job of raising two of the finest teenagers I have

met. Against the odds and all by yourself. Most of us on the Coast feel we have known Bindi and Bob from the day they were born, because we have literally watched them grow up. Our hearts broke into a million pieces when Steve left this earth. It also broke for those two children who were left so young without their irreplaceable dad. Losing your father would be reason for many kids to be bitter and rebel, or at the very least go off the tracks for a little while. It took me decades to get my act together after my parents divorced when I was very young. Nothing could be further from the truth for these two animal-loving siblings. On this night to celebrate Bindi turning 18, both of these remarkable souls mixed with complete strangers and were nothing but courteous, interested in what everyone had to say, and super polite. The Irwins posed for selfies with fans for hours and got down on their hands and knees to talk to children so they could look them in the eye. Bindi, I am sorry about the present my five-year-old insisted on buying you. It was a hideous looking bright red plastic toucan filled with sticky lip gloss for a child. In her classy way, Bindi simply said, “Oh, I love it! How special. Thank you so much.” It made my daughter’s year. Happy birthday, Bindi. What a stunning young woman you have become, on the outside and the inside.

S

amuel Johnson said ‘patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel’. It was a comment upon the horrors imperialist Europe visited upon the rest of the world in the 18th century. It seems as apropos today as it was then. It should not be lost on us that the term ‘chauvinism’ means an exaggerated patriotism. The defence of one’s homeland, appealing to one’s sense of patriotism, has long been a tool for governments. It is the leverage which coerces many of humanity’s young men and women to kill other people; to commit unspeakable acts of violence upon perfect strangers (who in Australia’s case, are very rarely ever within cooee of our homeland). Quite sadly, our fearless leaders (who rarely tread the battlefield themselves) fail to see the bitter irony in patriots from two different nations defending the honour of their respective homelands. If two men say they’re Jesus, one of them must be wrong. I have asked many people over the years to articulate for me how one can identify an Australian. It seems a simple enough question. But, once it is considered with any application of intellect, one realises there is no simple answer. Mostly the idea of what

is an Australian is defined by what it is not. It’s not a Kiwi, it’s not a Muslim, Hindu or Frenchman. It’s exclusive, not inclusive. And lacking any precise definition in a positive descriptive sense, it lends itself to ready and unreasonable discrimination against other members of humanity who we are not. Which of course shows up the whole concept of national pride and patriotism as a complete nonsense. Here we have eight billion people on the planet, most of whom define themselves, their nationality anyway,

“The very idea of nations is no more than an idea…” not by reference to some clear idea of who they are, but by who they believe they are not. The very idea of nations is no more than an idea, and a very silly one when you look at it like that. And then when we come back to the very idea of killing people for that idea, it seems not just preposterous but evil. Yet it occurs on a daily basis throughout the world, and I expect it will continue to do so until people start to identify themselves by reference to something more than just an idea; their humanity.

very now and then, unexpected events or people come into our lives with dramatic consequences, turning a once calm and happy life into chaos. How you react may mean the difference between how long it lasts, how much it hurts, and how much it affects your health, happiness, and life moving forward. Allowing a drama to persist in your life can create intense stress, leading to constant illness or struggling quite seriously with your mental state. Feeling you have no control is normal, though there’s always a choice in how much you allow yourself to stay involved in the situation. Knowing what to do is sometimes hard, especially when others are involved, taking some simple steps may help move you forward. Removing yourself and choosing not to participate in unnecessary drama may get the

problems resolved sooner, not to mention allowing you space to heal. Understand you can’t control the choices of others, though you can control your own actions, and letting go will be the first step in finding some peace. List the positive and negative influences in your life, then get busy including more of the positives, surround yourself with positive people, and replace the negative influences with the things that bring you happiness. Make the choice to move forward without guilt or regret, know that sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know until you learn through experience. A wise woman once said, there are no mistakes, it’s either a lesson or an adventure. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

SUNDAY, JULY 31 Ingredients: 1kg beef cheeks 200g sliced onion 200g chopped carrot 1 stick celery chopped 5 cloves garlic, leave whole just crush a little 1 tbs tomato paste 1 star anise, 1 bay leaf, 10 sprigs thyme, 12 peppercorns, 1 clove, 2 strips orange peel 1 bottle red wine 1 litre stock (beef or chicken) Method: Trim the silver skin from the beef, sprinkle liberally with salt. In a heavy based pan, brown the beef in a little butter and oil. If you are doing a large amount, brown only one or two cheeks at a time so it does not stew, when all the beef is sealed remove and set aside. Turn down the heat and in the same pan add the onions, garlic, carrots and the star anise. Cook slowly and allow to caramelise. Add the celery and cook to release the water. With a wooden spoon, scrape all the crispy residue from the bottom of the pan before adding the tomato paste and frying. Turn the heat up, add the wine and boil until it has reduced by at least two-thirds. Return the beef to the pan, cover with stock and bring to the boil. Add the thyme, peppercorns, orange, clove and bayleaf and cover and cook at 150 degrees Celsius for around three-and-a-half to four hours. Leave the beef to cool in the stock – overnight in the fridge if possible. When fully cooled, remove the beef fat

from the top of the liquid and reserve in the fridge. Warm the dish on the stovetop and remove the cheeks. Bring the liquid to the boil and strain. Put the strained liquid back on the heat and boil. Reduce slowly until it becomes thicker, like a sauce. Reheat and serve the beef cheeks in this sauce. Serve with mashed potato.

Chef’s tip: Add cold butter when mashing the potato and always warm your cream and milk before adding. This will give the mash a smooth consistency.

MOTORING PREVIEW

BETTER WITH AGE They say life begins at 40. Here’s your proof. By Peter Atkinson, AAP

V

olkswagen’s Passat – born way back in 1973, is today in the best shape of its life. The German giant recently lifted the covers off its latest Passat, the eighth generation model to wear the famous badge. Considering new models tend to roll around roughly every seven years, that’s a remarkable heritage for a car that, to be honest, isn’t even the most famous VW. But despite spending much of its life in the shadows, the Passat is VW’s

long-serving active model, and its most successful – having won more than 22 million buyers over those four decades – and has evolved from a once ugly duckling into a very handsome machine. The recipe has been pretty simple – honest, dependable motoring for a massive and devoted customer base. Of course, VW’s corporate reputation took a massive hit last year when it was revealed to have introduced a sneaky software system to deliberately misrepresent the emissions of some of its

vehicles. That was stunning because it was so incongruous with what VW has always been about: Consistency. Reliability. Credibility. They certainly apply to this latest version of the Passat. It’s an evolution of the previous model – keeping the things that worked well and adding some updates and innovations. First impressions are good. This is, without question, the best-looking Passat we’ve ever laid eyes on. We tested the Passat in its ultimate form – the up-scale Highline turbo-diesel variant ($45,990) – further enhanced with the $2500 sporty R-Line package. The Highline delivers some impressive technology improvements – including an App-Connect system that enables Apple’s ‘CarPlay’ and Android Auto functions. Mechanically, the fuel-saving stopstart system has been improved, while brake energy regeneration helps further reduce consumption and emissions. The R-Line pack adds lowered suspension, bigger alloys, sports seats and Nappa leather. But in reality it’s a bit of a sheep in wolf’s clothing – looking the part but with a slightly ponderous drivetrain that undoes some of that athletic image. Despite driving the more powerful of the two engine options (the 140TDI), a

two-litre turbo-diesel delivering 140 kilowatts and 400Nm, we found the Passat is a little pedestrian in its performance and a touch sluggish off the mark. That improves markedly when the car is up and rolling, mind you – with very sharp mid-range acceleration which makes it an ideal highway cruiser with ample overtaking talent. As usual, it’s hard to pick a fault with the Passat – and it’s unquestionably better than the model it replaces. Happily, it’s not only wine that gets better with age.

VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT HIGHLINE TDI140 HOW BIG? A generous mid-sizer that can easily handle the requirements of a modern family. HOW FAST? We found it surprisingly docile on takeoff, but pleasingly responsive once it’s up and rolling. HOW THIRSTY? The frugal turbo-diesel of our test model enjoys an official combined average of 4.8L/100km – which is excellent for a car of this size. The turbo petrol engine is slightly slower and a bit thirstier, at 6L/100km. HOW MUCH? Entry-level models start from about $35,000. We tested the most expensive Highline variant which costs $45,990 plus onroads – although that’s pretty solid value.

COAST TO OUTSHINE BRISBANE

A

ustralians are being told to prepare for a change to residential property markets as price growth slows. Economic and construction forecasting agency, BIS Shrapnel, has predicted that house prices in the nation’s capital cities will fall in the next three years. But it isn’t all bad news – residential prices are forecast to remain stable through to next year. And, on the Sunshine Coast, things are positive. The region is faring well with a reported strength in the local market in comparison to the sunshine state’s capital, Brisbane.

According to the Residential Property Prospects, 2016-19 report, the Coast is now seeing moderate price growth come through. Total price growth over the next three years is predicted to sit around seven per cent with suggestions major construction projects such as the Sunshine Coast University Hospital will sustain the economy. In comparison, Brisbane’s median house price remains six per cent below its June 2010 peak in real terms. BIS Shrapnel senior manager and study author, Angie Zigomanis says a deficiency of stock, low interest rates and relatively affordable housing normally drives a solid upturn in prices. “However, the Brisbane market is being held back by the weakness of the Queensland economy.’’ Sunshine Coast real estate agents have reported positive growth and increasing confidence in the residential market in recent months. Meanwhile, Australia’s residential building industry watchdog says latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics provide a healthy outlook for

HIA economist Harley Dale

“On the Sunshine Coast, things are positive. The region is faring well” the economy. Housing Industry Association chief economist Harley Dale says new home commencements reached a fresh record in the March 2016 quarter. In Queensland, over the 12 months to

BEERBURRUM

March 2016, new home construction in Queensland has increased by 13.1 per cent. “Residential construction is unequivocally the powerhouse of the Australian economy,’’ Dale says. “In addition to being a key economic driver in its own right, new home construction is having a very strong positive impact on many other parts of Australia’s economy and labour market. “New dwelling commencements reaching yet another record over the 12 months to March this year - nearly 230,000 - reinforces the vital economic role new home building continues to play in 2016. Dale says, based on the statistics, detached house developments have peaked for the cycle, but remain above average. “Meanwhile, commencements of multi-units continue their stratospheric rise – exceeding the number of detached houses over the last year. “The stunning headline masks large geographical divergences around the country, but most states and territories are ahead on the ledger.’’

SURF REPORT

The Vans US Open is on and what a borefest it is! Give me two sharp pencils to stick in my eyes, I’m done! Tahiti next month should be very interesting if it gets some solid waves. I have a friend who lives there who keeps asking me to come over and surf Chopes with him. There’s more chance of my hair growing back! OK, now back to our situation. Yep, great conditions and small waves so get what you can I guess. Or road trip down to Northern NSW as they always pick up more swell.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream numbers are increasing, and good fun for the kids with Cotton Tree the spot on the top of the tide. Serious anglers are drifting along the sand bank edges working bait and plastics for jacks, trevally and flathead around Goat Island. SURF: Open beaches and headlands of Point Cartwright and Pincushion are returning chopper tailor and sea bream with baby blue pillies and whitebait producing better quality fish. OFFSHORE: The Inner Gneerings is working on the change of the tide for anglers willing to berley, with cobia and snapper taking floated baits, and if the bait sinks down to the shallow reef, look out for sweetlip, parrot and cod. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is firing for bass and spangled perch, but don’t use lead sinkers in this impoundment. Lake Macdonald is another local dam firing for bass on medium divers and live shrimps with the drop off along the weed bed opposite the boat ramp producing the quality fish. Lake Borumba near Imbil is always worth a visit with saratoga, bass and jew providing plenty of sport for anglers.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) This week’s stars accentuate your adventurous nature and ‘devil-may-care’ attitude, but too much hot-headed hastiness could lead to an argument or accident so pace yourself. Rams are always butting in with advice but don’t offer help unless you are asked.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Each monthly new moon is a magical time of beginnings and the promise of things to come. Family and home life are where you need to make some changes – the sooner the better. If things have been tense with a loved one, swallow your pride and get talking.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) You can light up a room with your energy and gregarious nature. Wednesday onwards is the best time to channel your enthusiasm into a business partnership or venture. Joining a group, club or organisation in your local community brings mutual benefits.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Do you feel stuck at work? Or are you persevering with a dead-end job? Uranus urges you to banish boredom and take a smart calculated risk, as you shake things up via a professional pitch, a career detour or a new money-making venture.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) What a wonderful week, as the new moon stimulates your sign. Your creative talents are on fire and you’re bound to be the centre of attention. Plus Mercury, Venus and Jupiter bless financial matters and transactions, so shift your business brain into top gear.

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) With Mercury and Jupiter jumping through your sign (to be joined by Venus on Friday) you’re in the mood for flirting, shopping and socializing. It’s not all fun and frivolity though! When Mercury links up with serious Saturn (on Saturday) you may veer off into worry-mode.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) One half of you wants to be social, while the other half longs for some peace. The solution? Be a well-balanced Libran and juggle both! When it comes to relationships, expect the unexpected. If you are depending on loved ones to be organised, you’ll be disappointed.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) The more proactive you are (professionally and financially) the more successful you’ll be. Looking for employment? Think outside the box and find creative ways to present yourself in an irresistible new light (that makes you stand out from the crowd).

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Action-planet Mars charges through your sign (from Tuesday until September 27). But progress will be erratic as Mars motivates you to move forward, while Saturn cautions you to be wary! If you run around on auto-pilot, then you’re likely to make silly slip-ups.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) The week starts well, when the sun/Saturn trine helps you take care of business. But remember there’s a big difference between leading others and just being plain bossy. Domineering behaviour will lead to problems later in the week, so slip on your humility hat!

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) It’s time to crank up your social media strategy, as you network in increasingly innovative ways. It’s not what you know but who you know, so get circulating and advertising in style! Are you sick of being single? Love is in the air, as the new moon revs up your relationship zone.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Do you feel dismally disorganised? Is a lack of a daily routine letting you down? Perhaps it’s time to tune into the energy of the fiery new moon and try a more creative and considered approach? Focus your mind and pay close attention to small details.

THE LAST WORD

IMAGINARY WORLDS On an idyllic bushwalk with his son, Richard O’Leary time travels back to his own childhood.

M

y youngest son scratches out a line with a stick as he walks along the bush path on a sunny Sunday. The thin line stretches past the hollowed out log, the fallen trunk we often walk across and in and out of the barriers designed to stop the horse and bike riders. Unbroken, it twists and turns, goes up and down, through and around. A single furrow unfurling across a forest of ferns and trees and fungi. I walk a little way ahead with our dog, who sniffs the earth and marks its territory. I stop and turn to watch my five-year old, captivated by his concentration, wondering what is going on in his head. Is he ploughing a path to a treasure? Has he taken to heart a recent reading of Hansel and Gretel? Is he pointing to the future? Or marking the past? I am tempted to ask him, but catch myself just in time. What would be the

point? More importantly, why interrupt him? As we walk through the bush on this T-shirts and shorts winter morning, I drift back to my childhood and remember the cocoons I created with my imagination. Inside everything is intense: colours,

“…I drift back to my childhood and remember the cocoons I created with my imagination sounds, feelings. I make the rules and life makes sense. At the edges the everyday becomes a blur. I know it is there, but it seems less real than what I’ve created. The lining that separates these worlds

is as delicate as the soapy membrane of a bubble blown by a child. All it takes to break is a misdirected thought or the sound of an adult’s voice. But until that happens I am stronger, smarter, happier. I am careless and I care less about what others think. Fearless and fearsome. Invincible. A snap brings me back to the bush path where my son breaks off the end of the stick where it has been bent out of shape after catching on a divot. He wiggles the two pieces until the last strands separate and throws the shorter stick into the bush. Repairs done, he goes back to scratching out a line in the dirt and I watch him. The clutter of my life flies away and everything is intense: colours, sounds, feelings.
