his job can be incredibly humbling. I recently had the great privilege of meeting Carol Miller-McLeod, an inspirational Mooloolaba woman who became a full-time carer for her adult daughter, who a few years ago suffered a massive heart attack and was left with serious brain damage. Over a cup of tea and homemade cake, Carol told me about how much her life had changed since her daughter’s tragic event. There were tears and laughter as she talked about the trauma, the challenges and the small victories. Our meeting came about due to the efforts of two Sunshine Coast women who are trying to raise awareness about carers – and their mission is the subject of this week’s feature story. Also in this edition we take a look at a woman who has dedicated her life to the animals other people have abandoned. We also have the latest quotable quotes from the state election campaign and we take a cruise to Indonesia. Check out all the latest fashion, including the best and worst dressed, and photos from the Coast’s premier social events. There’s also plenty of property, including a close look at a new beachside precinct in Coolum. I look forward to talking with you again next week.

labour of love CARERS ARE RARELY REWARDED FOR WHAT THEY DO, SO TWO COAST WOMEN HAVE CREATED A SPECIAL DAY TO CARE FOR THE CARERS. WORDS: RICHARD O’LEARY

MAY 11, 2011

Forty-one year old advertising specialist Louise* lies on the f oor of her Brisbane apartment, technically dead. Just a minute earlier she had been going through a presentation with two of her employees, who she’d ask to make the short trip from the off ce of her successful ad agency. Louise had called in sick after a hacking cough, which had been annoying her for a couple of weeks, had become worse despite the course of antibiotics she’d just started. Tragically, the medication is what triggers the massive heart attack – the chemicals lighting the fuse on the time-bomb which has been ticking away inside her since being born with the rare heart condition Long QT syndrome. But nobody knows this as the minutes come and go while Louise’s assistants wait for the ambulance. Ten minutes after Louise collapses, paramedics arrive. She has no pulse. They shock her chest with def brillator paddles to kickstart her heart. It works and she starts to breathe again. She’s rushed to Royal Brisbane Hospital where she is put on life support. She survives, and spends the next eight months in hospital, as her brain tries to recover from all those minutes without oxygen. Louise leaves alive, but not with the same life. But this story isn’t about Louise and her disabilities (no short-term

memory, mobility constraints and continuing problems with her internal organs) – as important and worthwhile as that would be. This is a story about her mother, Carol Miller-McLeod (pictured below) who has been her full-time carer since she left hospital in 2012. It’s also about all those other ‘Carols’ out there who do the same thing; look after a loved one who has a serious disability, whether they were born that way or acquired it in later life. Ultimately, it tries to answer a simple question: who is caring for the carers? .

JANUARY 21, 2012

Twenty-three years after Louise left Mooloolaba to take on the world, she returned to the most heartbreaking of homecomings. Carol was 64 years-old the day she welcomed back her daughter. She

[ 8 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 30, 201 5

was f ercely independent, had a wide circle of friends and loved boot scootin’ at the local church hall for her weekly line-dancing class. Over the past couple of decades, she watched from a distance as her daughter travelled the world; experiencing the colours of Istanbul, wandering aimlessly around the stunning streets of Prague and soaking up the atmosphere of a Christmas in New York. She listened to her daughter’s stories of parties, dates, romances and friendships; boasted like any proud mum about Louise’s advertising agency, which had become her daughter’s passion as much as her profession; and looked on bemused as Louise collected more than a hundred pairs of shoes along the way. But Louise’s life has changed forever, as has her mother’s. The

experts told Carol to put her daughter in an institution, the damage was just too much for her to deal with alone. Her response was as certain as it was simple. “I can’t, she will die.” With those words, Carol became a full-time carer. She bathes, cooks, chauffeurs, chaperones, and most exhausting of all, makes just about every decision for her daughter every day, as she is incapable of making them herself. She gave Louise her bedroom, as it has an ensuite and the main bathroom is considered too dangerous, with its sunken bath. Carol set up Louise’s new bedroom to resemble the bedroom her daughter left in Brisbane. Small notes adorn the walls, reminding Louise what to do each day, who to call if Carol is sick, to mark each day off the calendar. Thinking for

Louise has become Carol’s life. “They told me it would be a roller-coaster and it is. I don’t know how she’s going to be in the morning when she wakes. Some days are great, sometimes she’s in the moment, and I think wow, I’ve got her back, but then she reverts back to having no short-term memory. “In my frustration, I have kicked the bed in there and broken my toe. It’s a challenge, a complete challenge with her. And don’t get me wrong – I’m very grateful I’ve got her. She’s my reason these days to get out of bed.” It’s the same reason thousands of other carers get out of bed as well, and Carol would be the f rst to admit some people have even tougher assignments than her. The degree of diff culties faced are as varied as the disabilities themselves. It’s just about impossible to comprehend what some carers go through just to get their loved one washed, dressed and fed. For many, it’s a lifelong commitment, with some carers on the Coast in their 90s. Carol says one of the hardest things to face is what will happen when she can no longer take care of Louise. “I haven’t made any arrangements. The other night I had some chest pains, and I thought, oh God, what if I have a heart attack in my sleep? I wrote a note and put it in the hallway: ‘If you can’t wake mum up in the morning ring Aunty Rhonda’. People say you have to make arrangements – but I can’t do it.” There are 2.7 million people in Australia who provide informal care to an older person or someone who has a disability or serious long-term health issue. It’s estimated they save the country

BY THE NUMBERS 4.2 million Australians are

In nm my frustration, I have kicked the bed in there and broken my toe. It’s a challenge, a complete challenge with her. And don’t get me wrong – I’m very grateful I’ve ggot her. She’s my reason these days to get out of bed ed more than $40 billion a year. That’s how much it would cost to provide those services if you paid people to do them. In Queensland there are 484,000 carers, or one in every 10 people; that equates to about 30,000 carers on the Sunshine Coast. They all have a story to tell, but all too often they are underrecognised, under-appreciated and over-extended. But that’s about to change, for a day at least, for 30 carers on the Sunshine Coast, including Carol. Stephanie Whelan and Paula Brennan met by chance at a media training workshop and during a chat over morning tea, discovered they share a passion for promoting the work of informal carers.

Stephanie is a co-ordinator at Equity Works, a not-for-prof t organisation that gives respite to carers who need a break from full-time caring. Paula is a Mooloolaba photographer whose 35 year-old brother Ryan has severe cerebral palsy, epilepsy, is deaf and blind, and has very limited communication skills. Coincidentally, Paula’s mum had been talking with Stephanie the week prior to the workshop about her impending move to the Sunshine Coast with Ryan. “It was pretty much, the universe brought us together I think,” Paula says. They had seen carers in action from different sides of the fence, but had come to the same

conclusion; something needed to be done to recognise the contribution they make to their families and communities. By the end of that morning tea, Celebrating Women Who Care was born.

A DAY TO BE PAMPERED

To be held on International Women’s Day on March 8, Celebrating Women Who Care will be a day to remember for 30 carers on the Sunshine Coast with a sit-down lunch, manicures, pedicures and massages. Most importantly, they won’t have to sacrif ce their normal respite care to enjoy the day. Paula and Stephanie are approaching individual businesses to each sponsor a carer, which will pay for f ve hours of respite care. continued over>

Stephanie Whelan Paula says the recognition is just as important as the reward. “I think it’s just going to be wonderful, a little recognition for a lot of hard work, because it really is an unthankable job. Oftentimes, the person you are looking after can’t or won’t or doesn’t realise and just expects it, and society doesn’t thank you as a whole – you never get that. It’s not even recognised.” Those views are echoed by

] Stephanie. “These women devote love and time on a daily basis, which is to the benef t of all of us. It’s not just the children or the family members, so we want to give them back some of that love and that time. It’s taking it back to the purest sense of you should have time out, you should be valued, you should be recognised.” The pair wants the March 8 celebration to become a regular event, and the concept to be expanded to men who are carers as well. It’s a small step in a long journey towards recognising the lifechanging contributions of all carers, and raising awareness about the people they look after every day. In the process, they hope to down the barriers that have separated carers and people with disabilities from the rest of the community. Carol summed it up best when she said: “I told Louise, I used to think these things always happen to other people, but this time the other people is us.” *Name changed for privacy.

2015 Retirement Forum The Countdown to Retirement Consider this… If you stopped work today, at age 60, you will likely be retired for 24 years, according to The Australia Bureau of Statistics. That’s the same as if you had stopped work in 1991. How much has life changed since then? Imagine having not worked for the last 24 years! Wow! But that’s effectively all retirement is! The decision to stop work, live from your life’s savings and super, and try to maintain a reasonable standard of living will be the biggest single financial decision you’ll ever make. Who’d attempt that without some expert advice? So, maybe you are saying to yourself that you could adjust to a lower income. That’s a brave decision in itself, but you need to be sure you are not missing out on anything you are entitled to. And its not just about finance. You need to ensure

you keep your mind and body active in your leisure years too. So where do you start? You get informed by educating yourself and seeking advice from experienced professionals. When you are dealing with a family company like ours, that has been helping people with their retirement for more than 26 years, you find yourself in capable hands. No matter what you do… we ‘get’ you. Our clients range from retired business people to retirees who are reliant on Centrelink.

On Tuesday, 10th February at 6pm, ES&A Financial Services are hosting a forum to start the conversation on your retirement planning. No sales pitch, nothing to sell....just good old fashioned experience to share.

Nurse finds her true calling at SCARS Words: Sam Walker

I

t’s not every job where you can take your dogs to work with you. But then, Penny Brischke doesn’t have a run of-the-mill job. The self-proclaimed home body and lover of all animals, great and small, is the operations manager at the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS) at Sippy Creek. And each day her little chihuahua, Pippa – a former resident at the refuge – and her 13-year-old, 40-kilogram Rhodesian ridgeback, Jackson, accompany her to work. It is a different environment to her original career as a nurse – where the dogs def nitely couldn’t accompany her. “Two years ago I decided to have a life change and applied for the position (at SCARS) and got

the manager role,” Brischke says. “The job came up here and I thought what a perfect opportunity to come and do something that I love and make a big difference. “Often you have a job and it’s a job, whereas this, to me, is a passion.”

Her last job was as director of planning – clinical services at Queensland Health and she worked on the Sunshine Coast University Hospital planning team, the redevelopment of the Caloundra and Nambour hospitals and the redesign of health services for the district.

Brischke started volunteering at the refuge on weekends about f ve years ago, before the job came up. This year she has decided to job share her manager role at SCAR and is also doing some nursing shifts but she says the refuge is her priority. “It’s distressing at times when you see animals that come in and haven’t been looked after or [have been] mistreated,” she says. And she f nds it distressing to see so many litters of kittens and puppies come in. “But then, it’s so rewarding.” Despite what many people think she says the refuge is a happy place and the dogs and cats are looked after and nursed back to health if they have been mistreated. And they get a lot of attention from the volunteers who feed and bathe them and keep the place clean. “It’s not as good as being in a perfect home but for some of them, it’s better than where they came from or where they would have been. “The saddest thing is just the quantity, because we are always full.”

At the time of writing, the refuge was home to 54 dogs and 58 cats with 16 kittens in temporary foster care, and 40 dogs in permanent foster care. A no euthanasia policy means every dog and cat will stay at the refuge until they f nd a home, so at busy times this can put a strain on space and resources. Last year, more than 900 dogs and cats passed through the refuge and 860 were adopted. Brischke says the refuge, which costs in excess of $500,000 a year to operate and runs predominantly on community donations and a council grant, could not function without the support of a dedicated team of volunteers. She is amazed that so many Coast residents still don’t realise the refuge is here, but on the other hand she has also had interstate visitors who have adopted pets and taken them home with them. When she’s not at the refuge, Brischke spends a lot of time with her dogs, enjoys gardening and f shing and is learning how to play golf.

But the refuge is never far from her mind and she is always thinking of new ways to generate publicity and funding and f nd more homes for the animals.

Why I want to be a part of your home: I am playful and friendly, eat anything and I love the beach. I am sure I will f t into your home really well. What you should know about me: I am a female wolfhound cross aged one year. I am desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. I am OK with most other dogs. I am energetic, so I will be perfect for someone who wants to run or leads an active lifestyle.

I am desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. I have lived with dogs in the past and I am also f ne with another cat. I would make a wonderful addition to most homes.

SCARS is at capacity with more than 60 dogs and 40 cats in the shelter. Unfortunately dog adoptions have been slow for a few months. Please consider adopting a dog or cat or two and save a life by creating space for an animal waiting to come in. Donations of kitten and puppy food is appreciated. Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge is non-profit, non-euthanising and has been rescuing animals for more than 35 years. Animal therapy

ew research is being conducted at the University of the Sunshine Coast to help improve the delivery of animal-assisted therapy. Master of Social Work by research student Natalie Menyweather, who runs a private equine therapy service at Mooloolah, is keen to help establish procedures to ensure the ethical support of animals in social work practice, research and policy. While her service gives children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Def cit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) the opportunity to connect with horses, other animal-assisted therapy services involve clients spending time with cats and dogs. “The human and animal bond is such a special relationship and I want to ensure, going forward, that animals are treated with respect and equality in the f eld of social work,” Merryweather says. She started her own private practice in 2013 and has been amazed by the outcomes, whether animal-assisted therapy is used exclusively or in conjunction with

conventional forms of therapy. “I run a support group with USC for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It amazes me how people, especially those with ASD, are drawn to animals,” she says. Animal-assisted therapy in Australia is an area she says has not been researched signif cantly. Her research supervisor, USC senior lecturer in Social Work Dr Dyann Ross, says the study is very timely. “This research is groundbreaking in recognition of the absence of multi-species ethics and practice standards in social work and, in this regard, has much to contribute to the future development of social work and related helping professions,” Ross says.

Team members from SEA LIFE Mooloolaba are preparing to roll up their sleeves for an enormous land-to-sea clean-up event from Shelly Beach to Mooloolaba this weekend. They are joining forces with Sunshine Coast TurtleCare, Reef Check Australia and the Sunshine Coast Council to protect turtle hatchlings from threats of pollution. Last year’s event saw more than 200 kilograms of debris removed from beaches and waterways and event organisers are urging residents to take part in the collaborative clean-up. Reef Check Australia spokeswoman Jodi Salmond says marine debris is a big problem in any environment, killing more than one million sea birds and more than 100,000 sea mammals each year. “Thousands of sea turtles ingest or become entangled in debris items every year, resulting in painful injuries and death,” Salmond says. University of Queensland researchers have found f oating marine debris has become an

increasing concern over the last 20 years due to the risk it presents to sea turtles at all stages of their lifecycle. The clean-up will take place on January 31 with sign-on from 6.15am. Krauss house closer after $100,000 raised

Restored Krauss

The campaign to build a Krauss house has reached a major milestone after fundraising efforts passed $100,000, courtesy of major donations by the Gambling Community Benef t Fund ($35,000) and Sunshine Coast Antique & Collectibles Club ($5000). Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway members have lovingly

restored the Krauss locomotive, which was the f rst to steam out of Buderim in 1914. The loco was used to transport sugar cane and other agricultural products to the main rail line for more than two decades. The club is hoping to raise $350,000 to build the f nal home for the engine on the corner of

Krauss leaving the factory.

INDO ADVENTURE The beauty of Bali and Lombok are at your fingertips when you take a two-week Indonesia cruise that takes you to a new destination each day. By Rachel Williams, AAP

T

entatively creeping through the shady forest, we’re on high alert. Speaking in hushed tones, only our feet crunching on the manmade shell path give away our position. Eerily, the white stones resemble tiny bones, which add to the nail-biting mood. “What’s that?” someone whispers, excitedly. We look round eagerly, cameras at the ready, but to our disappointment, it’s only a group of skittish wild deer. What we’re really looking for is the dangerous, dinosaur-looking komodo dragon – a creature I’d imagined existed only in fairy tales. More than 2000 roam freely in the group of lush green Indonesian islands that make up Komodo National Park, which is deservedly ranked as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The world’s largest lizard can grow up to three metres, and has shark-like teeth and

poisonous saliva, so it’s no surprise we’re not allowed off our cruise ship, MS Rotterdam, without a planned excursion. As well as preying on other animals, the cannibalistic dragons feast on their young – and, to our horror, humans. If you survive their initial bite, it’s likely you’ll die from blood poisoning a few days later. But f anked by two guides clutching fork sticks for protection, we’re daring to trek through Komodo Island in search of these incredible reptiles. After 45 minutes in the blistering noon heat, we’re about to give up hope when, suddenly, our guides stop and usher us to move forward very slowly. We enter a clearing to f nd six huge, evillooking dragons, with scaly skin, long tongues and black beady eyes.

Ord Minnett Buderim – Sunshine Coast

Does your current f nancial adviser offer you a new ‘best of breed’ super fund that eclipses your current super product?

My heart is hammering as one creeps behind us and sprawls lazily under a tree. It’s easy to see why this is the most talked about excursion on our two-week Indonesia cruise itinerary. Everyone gets photos and we head back to the ship to sip cocktails on sun loungers while listening to live jazz. That’s the beauty of cruising around SouthEast Asia. After exploring historic temples and perusing bustling markets, you can retreat to the luxury of the mid-size ship with its champagne bars, f ne dining restaurants, casino and lavish spa. Most exciting of all, you nearly always wake up in a new destination every day. We started our adventure in Bogor, about 60 kilometres south of Jakarta, with a visit to the Taman Safari Park, one of the world’s most successful breeding centres for endangered species. Tigers, rhinos and Chinese bears are just some of the animals found there. But organised tours can be a bit rushed, so when we reach Lombok, we explore alone. We barter with a taxi driver, then for the next f ve hours he amazes us with his knowledge. “Lombok is the Bali of 25 years ago,” he tells us. The island remains unspoilt and lush, fringed by beaches strewn with coconut palms. We visit Sukarara, a weaving village, to watch women at work. It takes a whole month to make one sarong. We enjoy a spicy Indonesian lunch at Mangsit

Seascape view of Kuta beach, Lombok, Indonesia Beach, but the food is just as delicious on the ship. Choosing from different menus every night, we enjoy meals of succulent lamb, juicy prime rib and hot chocolate puds. We head to Kuta Beach for our f rst of two days in Bali. Tourists of all ages are learning to surf or shopping at stalls selling cheap beachwear and jewellery, and we enjoy chatting with locals. On our second day, we opt for another ship excursion and witness a traditional Barong Dance performance. Then we head to Tirta Empul, the temple of holy springs. Balinese people travel from across the island

to bathe in its protective waters. Our hilarious guide keeps us entertained with fascinating stories of Balinese beliefs, religion and culture. We f nish the day at an art gallery in Ubud, where some travellers treat themselves to souvenirs. But back on the ship, there’s plenty of time to relax. I spend every spare minute sunbathing on the top deck or looking out to sea, and I even glimpse a pod of dolphins. It’s like a scene from a fairytale, and I can hardly believe it’s real. Just like those mysterious dragons.

“He died of a heart attack without any warning, and so young!” Sadly we hear about this so often…What would you give to know if you were at risk of stroke or heart attack BEFORE it happens?

A recent patient, an 80 year old male, had been on heart medication for blood pressure for 30 years, following a heart attack suffered at the age of 50, and was being monitored by his Cardiologist. When he came to the clinic, we found through scanning, that even though his brachial blood pressure was 120/80, in his aorta in the heart and in his carotid arteries it was actually 150/110, and the inf ammation in his heart was phenomenal, what we found was alarming! After using strong natural anti-inf ammatories, and changing his diet to reduce levels of inf ammation, he was rescanned within 2 weeks, f nding that the inf ammation had reduced by 50%, his blood pressure now was 139/99, but was not yet completely normal. After further testing, he was found to have severe allergies to foods he was eating daily, that were actually healthy foods, and he had an infection throughout his system. These together were causing massive inf ammation, and could have been the cause of his heart disease from decades earlier. He was so grateful after seeing his follow up scan, said that he had been looking for a long time for something that could

show him everything that was really going on in his body all at once. He had found it, and just in time! By 10 weeks, his blood pressure after 30 years was at 120/80 without medication, and after another 8 months, his cholesterol and triglycerides were normal, with no more need for any medications at the age of 80! With one scan your whole body is measured with extreme accuracy showing inf ammation in breast, uterine and prostate tissue, heart, lungs, stomach, bowel, brain and more. Your blood pressure is measured in your heart, and in the carotid arteries, as well as the normal brachial blood pressure, which can show the likelihood of a stroke or heart attack before it occurs. Knowing these things in advance can mean making changes to prevent them happening. This can change your life forever. To f nd out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation to come in and discuss what our in-house testing can offer, and what it may be able to do for you. You have a choice. Make 2015 your year to change the path of your future health. Contact us for a free half hour consultation or view our FREE webinar at www.advancedwellness.com.au

APP OF THE WEEK

Bits and bytes

By Paul Hamilton

> STUDYvault

Australia Post Mobile

We first mentioned STUDYvault last year when it was still in its fundraising stages. But since then, this innovative Sunshine Coast design has hit the market – just in time for the start of the school and university year. Its developers describe STUDYvault as a ‘life-proof’ flash drive. It is designed to be hardy and hold up under the pressures of student life, such as being dropped or crushed and it is even water resistant. The idea behind this USB is to provide a quick and easy way to back up student work. It automatically watches for a specific folder with your student work and saves any changes made to that folder. For more information visit hivemindtech.com.au.

FREE FOR IOS & ANDROID It is safe to say most of us have used the Australia Post service at one time or another. However, with the release of its new app, the type of service Australia Post offers has expanded, thanks largely to the digital age. Features include managing and tracking your deliveries, scanning barcodes (via your mobile device) for efficient payment details and the very useful feature of calculating postage costs via a special postage calculator. With many companies using postage and delivery services as a major part of their core business, the Australia Post app is a worthwhile addition. Australia Post Mobile is available free for IOS and Android. Paul Hamilton is the Primary ICT co-ordinator at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. You can follow Paul on twitter @PaulHamilton8 or at facebook.com/Appsbypaulhamilton.

There’s no time like the present to plan for retirement

Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

I

t is already the end of January, the kids are back at school and Christmas holidays seem like a distant memory. It is at this time that most people set goals for the year(s) ahead. It is important to remember to set financial goals at this time as part of this process. While there are many areas to look at within your personal finances, today we will concentrate on saving for retirement. A question often asked is, how much money do you need to retire? This is a bit like asking, how long is a piece of string? The answer will vary depending upon how lavish your lifestyle is, how long you live

and how you invest your money. It is possible, however, to estimate an amount if we make some basic assumptions. A couple who retire at age 65 will, on average, live another 22 years. We will use this as our f rst assumption. The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (AFSA) estimates that a couple will require about $56,400 per year to live a comfortable lifestyle in retirement. For most retirees, the age pension will form part of their retirement income. The combined maximum age pension for a couple is around $33,400 per annum, well short of the $56,400 ASFA recommends for a comfortable retirement. This shortfall of income must be funded by your own savings. The problem that arises is that

Mentoring for Investment Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with the Queensland Government to deliver support programs for local high growth businesses. The Mentoring for Investment program matches innovative businesses which are looking to raise capital with specialist volunteer business mentors. A panel of volunteer business leaders and professionals from the finance and investment industry provide their knowledge and expertise to assist companies with their investment strategy and pitch. Mentoring for Investment is based on the Queensland Government’s successful Mentoring for Growth program. If you are a business looking for support or would like to know more about the Mentoring for Growth and Investment programs, please visit www.business.qld.gov.au/mentoring or send an enquiry to m4g@dtesb.qld.gov.au. Barry Sheridan from Seniors Wellbeing Ltd, a participating company, said: “The program provided me with a great opportunity to present to a panel of investment mentors and gain feedback on areas for improvement in my presentation and investment strategy. It helped prepare me for the tough capital raising environment that I am entering”.

the age pension is subject to both an income and asset test. Unfortunately, the more savings you have, the less age pension you will receive. While this may be viewed as penalising those who save during their working life, the ultimate goal is to have enough income to enjoy a comfortable retirement, regardless of where it comes from. Let’s assume you had an account-based pension fund (superannuation) of $600,000 and other assets of $50,000 – this would reduce the total age pension a couple could receive to around $18,000 per annum. This means additional income of $38,400 per annum would need to come from your savings. The account-based pension fund would need to make a net return of 6.4 per cent per annum for it to last the required 22 years without drawing on capital.

We would love to welcome Justin Herald, International Entrepreneur of the Year, as our very special guest speaker for our first breakfast of the year. Justin will lead us all on a journey to ensuring 2015 is our most successful year in business. The breakfast will also give our members vital updates on our new website and fantastic networking events for the year. Then...stay for a 'Business Building Bootcamp' from 9am till 12.30pm at The Surf Club Mooloolaba where Justin will workshop the steps to creating success for 2015. time COCONUT PUMPKIN AND MUSHROOM SOUP Recipe courtesy Junk, Ocean Street, Maroochydore INGREDIENTS: 1 cup pumpkin diced in 1 cm cubes 3–4 medium fresh shitake or Swiss brown mushrooms thinly sliced 600 ml coconut milk 250 ml vegetable stock ½ tblsp vegetable oil ½ tsp roasted white peppercorns 2 medium coriander roots, washed and scraped 2–3 roasted small dried chillies, crumbled or whole 60– 80 ml lime juice (to taste) 50 ml light soy sauce 4–6 slices ginger, thinly sliced ½ cup coriander leaves 4–6 red shallots, wok-charred in their skins 1 tblsp crispy fried garlic (garnish)

METHOD: In a wok on a low heat, slowly char the shallots in their skins until tender to obtain a smoky flavour but don’t burn. Pop out of their skins. With a mortar and pestle, pound the peppercorns and coriander root to a robust paste. In a saucepan, warm the vegetable oil on a low heat and fry the paste until fragrant and golden. Add the pumpkin cubes, stirring in. Add the coconut milk and red shallots, ginger, dried chilli and mushroom. Bring to a slow simmer and allow pumpkin to soften. Add the light soy sauce and simmer a further 2–3 mins. Remove from the heat and stir in lime juice. Correct the seasoning with light soy sauce and ladle into a large serving bowl. Garnish with coriander leaves and crispy fried garlic and serve.

ALL FOR ONE They’re an odd couple – 66-year-old Errol RJ Morrison and 16-year-old Henry Jeaffreson. But despite the age difference, they have teamed up to create the musical All For One… and Everyone for Himself. Morrison has written the farcical rip-off of Alexander Dumas’ famous work, The Three Musketeers, while Jeaffreson has composed the original music for the show. This exciting and fun show, retelling a classic tale in a slightly warped way, will be performed at The Lind in Nambour. Opening night is Saturday, February 14. The best car of 2014 hands down WORDS Peter Atkinson

G

etting a bunch of motoring writers to agree about cars is nigh impossible. Finding consensus about the best car? Forget it. So when just about every motoring writer in the country is in furious agreement about the best vehicle to hit the market in 2014, you know it must be good. And the Mercedes-Benz C-Class certainly is that. Staggeringly good. Judges were unanimous in naming the

C-Class as their respective car of the year. Our national motoring clubs, in their annual Best Cars Awards, agreed. The German manufacturer’s claim this car changes everything might be immodest, but it’s also true. This new C-Class is a game-changer. What’s so impressive about this new volumeseller for the world’s most famous car maker? It’s bigger yet lighter, more powerful yet more

fuel eff cient, sportier yet more luxurious and has added a welter of new technology with no corresponding lift in price. Most of all, it has given a large and growing number of Aussies access to the world’s best technology. Cars such as the C-Class are more affordable than at any time in history, and prestige badges are replacing high-end Commodores and Falcons in a growing number of Aussie driveways. The new C-Class, in raising the bar for this segment, will hasten the trend. Of course, there’s a risk when a car has been awarded, lauded and applauded to such a degree that you’ll feel slightly let down when you actually drive it. Not this time. The C-Class carried an added burden when it visited our place – our family car is a C-Class sedan of the just-superseded model, one that has served us magnif cently over the past couple of years. As impressive as the previous model was, this one runs rings around it. It’s better in every way. My wife reckons it looks and feels more like Benz’s luxury S-Class than a car for mere mortals such as us. There’s more than a hint of S-Class in its styling, presentation and even with many of the safety features recently unveiled on the new S, including a package called Intelligent Drive, which Continued over >

incorporates a collision avoidance system, blind spot and lane-change warning systems and attention assist to alert a drowsy driver. The C-Class will park itself, read traff c signs for you, dim its headlights for oncoming traff c and apply the brakes, at speeds up to 200 kilometres per hour. The C-Class has grown in length and width, yet it’s about 100 kilograms lighter which, in turn, helps deliver a 20 per cent improvement on fuel eff ciency. It will be offered with three distinct trim variations – Avantgarde, an Exclusive luxury package and the sport-focused AMG line – with f ve engine choices. These include two turbo-diesel and two turbo-petrol variants and the f rst-ever hybrid C-Class, the C300 BlueTEC hybrid with a thirst of just 3.6 litres per 100 kilometres. The base-model C200, the car judged the year’s best by virtually all of the nation’s leading motoring awards, enjoys substantially upgraded standard equipment for a starting price just over $60,000.

Upgrade to the C250 ($68,900 plus onroads), which we tested, and you add 19-inch alloys, full leather trim plus an upgraded driver assistance package. A seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic is standard across the range, one of the few carry-overs from the previous model, although even that has been tweaked. It’s in the cockpit where the C-Class feels so special. MercedesBenz claims it’s akin to being upgraded from economy to business class on an aeroplane.

It’s unmistakably a clone of the bigger, much more expensive S-Class, particularly the dash layout with a horizontal row of simple but clever switches. It’s aesthetically pleasing, too, from the classy-looking turbine-style vents, f nished in polished alloy, to the glossy lacquered or woodgrain trim. For the f rst time, the C-Class features a head-up display, beaming speed and sat-nav instructions into the driver’s f eld of vision – a feature we f rst encountered in BMW some years ago but has f nally been embraced by Benz. Outside, the styling is crisp and pleasing to the eye. It is swoopy and sexy, yet doesn’t look overdesigned. Proportions are just right. On the road the Benz is impeccably balanced and impressively quiet. Which brings us to one f nal point. Do I agree that the C200 is the best car of the year? Well, not exactly. I’d be inclined to spend a few extra bucks and get the C250 instead. See, I told you it was hard to get motoring writers to agree.

MERCEDES-BENZ C250 Details: Four-door, f ve-seat compact sedan with fourcylinder turbocharged petrol engine and seven-speed automatic transmission. Tech stuff: 2-litre, fourcylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces 155kW at 5500rpm; 350Nm at 12004000rpm. Features: Dynamic stability control, automated city braking, radar cruise control with collision avoidance system; lane departure and blind spot warnings; pedestrian recognition, head-up display with speed warnings; automatic headlights and wipers; selfparking function, auto-dimming headlights, premium audio. Performance: 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds. Thirst: 6L/100km. Verdict: A winner beyond any argument. Bottom Line: $68,900 plus onroad costs.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] The full moon plus Uranus and Jupiter aspects are an impulsive (and explosive) combination. You’re in a spontaneous mood but remember – it takes a short time to burn bridges and a lot longer to mend them! Resist the temptation to be a rambunctious ram.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] With Mercury reversing through your career zone expect mix-ups, missed appointments or computer chaos. It’s not a good time to apply for jobs – wait until after February 11. The main thing that will help resolve problems is compromise.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Geminis love to gossip but beware the tendency to spill secrets. Words are powerful weapons so use them wisely, and be extra careful when sending emails, texts or tweets as your meaning could easily be misinterpreted. Beautify your work environment and have fun.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Crabs can be careless with cash and credit, and this week’s fiery full moon encourages comfort shopping and impulse buys. Do your best to steer clear of self-indulgent spending sprees – in person and online.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] The annual Leo full moon boosts your cat confidence and charisma, and helps your leadership skills shine brightly – as long as you put the needs of others first. You’re full of fabulous ideas but the challenge is to follow through on commitments.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] With retrograde Mercury aspecting Saturn, it’s the perfect week to review your daily routine and redefine your goals for the future. If you’re not heading down the right road for you, then don’t be afraid to take a detour or even change course completely.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] This week you need to be extra tactful with a child, teenager or friend. Otherwise there’ll be communication chaos, as you misread each other’s words and intentions. For some loyal Librans, a friendship that’s been floundering may come to an unexpected end.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] It will be tricky to get the balance right between your personal and professional lives. The pressure’s on at work, but don’t let it blind you to the pressing needs of loved ones. When it comes to a frustrating family issue, it’s time to revise, review and then reboot.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Think before you speak! Your verbal and mental abilities are still shockingly scrambled, as Mercury continues reversing through your communication zone (until February 11). The full moon and Jupiter jump-start your tendency to indulge in impulsive behaviour.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Capricorns are ambitious souls but sometimes you fall short of reaching the lofty heights you crave. The reason? You don’t want to attempt something unless you can do it 100% properly, the first time. Which is impossible – and can result in a permanent failure to launch.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] The full moon amplifies your unpredictable Aquarian nature. You’re in the mood to stir things up, especially when it comes to close relationships. But are you ready for the consequences? Do your best to surround yourself with people who encourage your dreams.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] With Mars and Venus both visiting your sign it’s time to be bold and beautiful, as you learn to love yourself. An old Piscean hope, dream or wish may need to be updated and transformed so it’s a more realistic reflection of the powerful and positive new you in 2015.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

To snake or not to snake? That is the question Basically, it is a trick positioning move seasoned surfers try out on the unsuspecting. It works like this. You catch a wave and stand to your feet. If you go a little bit too wide some surfers sneak in on the inside then paddle in. You turn around to see someone standing who wasn’t there before and suddenly you think you have dropped in on someone and hop off. You have then been officially snaked! It is uncool to do. Last weekend was plenty of fun. This weekend will have light onshore winds but should have a few waves on offer. As always get in early.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: There are bigger daytime tides this week with whiting and flathead moving over the yabby banks around Goat Island on the rising tide – use yabbies. You’ll find sand crabs in the Cod Hole and down to the Twin Waters area. You’ll get jew on live bait at the Motorway Bridge with herring schooling throughout the Maroochy River. SURF: Dart and whiting are taking worms and pippies along Maroochy North Shore on the making tide. Sea bream and chopper tailor are still about in numbers at Pincushion with dawn and dusk the best. OFFSHORE: Snapper and sweetlip are working over the shallow reefs of the Gneerings and Murphy’s with most fish taken on pillies floated mid water. There’s mixed reef on squid on the Barwon Banks. FRESHWATER: This is the best time of the year to fish our local impoundments with live shrimp and deep divers returning bass and golden perch in Lake Baroon. Somerset and Bjelke Petersen have had the extra pressure of holiday makers, but are still returning quality bass on jigged or spinning lures. Golden perch are taking deep divers and floated shrimps.
