camp fair QUESTIONS FOR PARENTS Tammy Lindquist, marketing and business development manager for Tidewater Parent Magazine, said the following questions are important:

What is the instructor to child ratio? Some children need more adult supervision than others.

How do they handle homesick campers?

Are field trips included in the camp?

What medical forms are needed?

Is there a sneak preview to personally visit the camp?

Are they accredited?

Does the staff know proper medical procedures such as CPR?

Get the most from your search

Are snacks included?

It can be overwhelming with all the information vendors provide. Plan ahead and bring questions to get the answers you need.

What type of food is served? Ask for a menu sample.

BY SUSAN SMIGIELSKI ACKER

What type of discounts do they offer? Lindquist said many offer military discounts, early payment discounts and early installment payment discounts.

Do they do a background check on staff members?

If you have a teen in need of summer employment, do they hire teens?

LOOKING FOR A GOOD camp experience for your child can mean much time researching. To make it easy, Tidewater Parent and MyTidewaterMoms. com will host a camp fair on March 9 at 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach. The fair will have nearly 50 vendors to talk about the benefits of their camps and programs for children of various ages. The variety of vendors includes day

camp opportunities for the entire summer to one week. There will overnight camps and sports camps represented as well as tutoring programs. In addition, several birthday party vendors will show their abilities. There will also be entertainment. With so many vendors, Tammy Lindquist, marketing and business development manager for Tidewater Parent Magazine, said “it can be overwhelming.” However, Lindquist said if

you know how to visit such an event, it can be a very productive and enjoyable time. Lindquist, who has handled several such fairs, offered the following tips to making the most of your day at the fair. Make sure you register for the fair. Lindquist said this gets you on the list for prizes and other benefits including a free bag to hold information you collect. Lindquist said your camper

can use the bag when they head off to camp. Visit each booth and ask what they do for campers. Just because your child does not think they will enjoy a particular camp, does not mean they will not. “You would never know it but private schools have way more going for them than you would think. And organizations such as the Simon Family JCC Camp has a wide variety of activities from swimming to golf,” Lindquist said.

camp memories

I WENT TO THE MASTER’S INN for several summers in elementary school, where I participated in archery, rifle shooting, fishing, horseback riding, and ropes courses. The very best part was spending the hot summer afternoons at the lake, jumping off the deck onto “the blob”, a giant air mattress that catapults you into the air and splashing into the water. There was so much to do and so many friends to be made. It was a children’s paradise and I never wanted to leave.

I WAS REALLY excited and nervous at the same time. The best thing about being away from home for a while was making new friends. I made three. My least favorite thing was I missed my family. I felt braver because it was my first time away at camp and I was staying away from my house for a week. My favorite thing we did was when we learned archery and swam in the pool. I want to go back because I loved the camp. One bad thing was that the beds were not that comfortable and they had a lot of dirt on them. I felt like going to that camp made me feel like I was growing up.

TOMMY JOHNSON

Age 12, Student Yorktown

I WENT OFF to overnight camp in Colorado as a shy and awkward 12-year-old who, despite already being extremely tall, preferred to fade into the background. One morning I got to take my favorite horse on a trail ride, and the counselor decided to let us run the horses across a huge field. My horse, a muscular, black and slightly wild creature named “Cool” (for real), took off first. I was terrified at first, but then I just felt great, like I was flying and confident and in control. For those moments I was totally free of worrying about fitting in and wishing I could be less timid. I still think about that morning when I am feeling stressed out or even just having a shy moment. It was pretty cool.

WW W.M ISS VA

WHEN I WAS around 10 years old I went to YMCA day camp during the summer. There were arts and crafts plus archery which I loved to do. Just being outside was great. One vivid memory is of a sudden thunderstorm that caught our group out in the open in a big grassy field. Our counselor led all of us running to the nearest building for safety; it seemed like we ran for a long way before we escaped from very scary pouring rain, loud thunder and lightning all around us. Some of us tripped and fell on the way in, we came in drenched, but she made sure we were all calmed down and everyone was fine. Her name has gone from my mind but I remember her kindness, how she both led and joined in many of the activities. She brought out the best in each one of us.

Summer camp provides an environment for kids to grow outside the classroom, helping them buld skills to use in the real world.

I WENT TO SEVERAL sports camps as a child growing up in Virginia Beach. My favorite camp memory was going to triple R each summer. I was an experienced paddler growing up so I always won the canoe race. I made so many great friends at that camp but I was always ready to go home to my own bed after a week.

boys vs. girls

Co-ed camps A good choice? BY BRANDY CENTOLANZA

A

S SUMMER DRAWS near, moms and dads may be weighing potential benefits of enrolling their children in same gender summer camp programs. // Females,

in particular, are more likely to speak up, take risks and develop leadership skills when they are in a same gender environment.

“Girls have unique needs and interests different from boys,” explained Marcy Germanotta, communications director for Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast. “They need a special place in their developmental years

where they can discover their talents and learn to succeed.” Camps such as those offered through Girl Scouts allow girls to “be themselves, try new skills and speak their minds without worrying about how

12 | S U M M E R C A M P G U I D E 2 0 1 3 | www.MyTidewaterMoms.com

boys will react,” Germanotta said. As females enter their preteen and adolescent years, they tend to become more self-conscious, and a single-gender camp may lessen their fears of being teased or ridiculed. LeAnne Boyer of Williamsburg, whose six-yea r- old daughter is a Girl Scout, can envision the potential benefits as her daughter gets older. “I do feel that once you start to come in to the age of noticing the other gender, a child

could be richly blessed to go to a single gender camp because there are fewer pressures and then they can really bond and enjoy the time they have at camp with out all the fuss,” Boyer said. There are plus sides for boys too. Single-gender sports camps, for example, offer the chance for males to also hone their leadership skills as well as learn to work together in a group. “Proponents of single sex education argue that separating children by their biological sex can reduce distractions between boys and girls and improve their learning,” said Dr. Kai Heidemann, a sociologist with the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. “They also argue that it creates a space where-

by boys and girls can feel free to be themselves without pressure of being judged for their looks or for fear of how ‘cool’ they appear in front of the opposite sex.” Dr. Shannon Trice-Black, an assistant professor with the School Psychology and Counselor Education Program at College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, added that single gender camps can include “benefits of providing an environment where girls and boys can thrive in a setting where they have the freedom to grow in self-awareness, selfesteem, trust, and relationships with each other. Single gender camps include camp counselors who are positive role models of the same gender. In a setting without distractions from the opposite sex, children and adolescents can thrive.”

dren and adolescents for the real world. Boys and girls can have the opportunity to work alongside one another in a small environment with both female and male counselors who are often positive role models.” Trice-Black said that both single gender and co-ed programs “can help break down gender role stereotypes.” “For example, a camp for girls can offer opportunities to explore and learn about activities that our society often labels as activities more well suited for boys such as math and science programs, computer pro-

grams, and some sports or outdoor programs,” she said. “The same holds true for boys who might feel more comfortable exploring interests such as music or art in an environment without females. On the other hand, co-ed camps offer girls and boys the opportunities to work alongside one another and learn more about one another. Each camp will be as unique as the child itself.” And that’s the bottom line. When deciding on a camp program, parents need to know what might be the right fit for their child. “The most important factor in making the choice between single gender or co-ed camps is the individual personality of each child,” said Trice-Black. “Parents know their children’s personalities and they also know places in which their child would like to or needs to grow. Every child is different, and the circumstances may differ every year as children develop physically and psychologically.”

There are some downsides, though. Kelly Wilson, owner of 3D Sports Inc. in Yorktown, which offers both single gender and co-ed sports camp programs, says that while single gender camps give females “more of a chance to learn and participate, and provide them with more freedom of expression and freedom of participation,” co-ed camps are the ideal. “The pro of a co-ed camp is to prepare you for the society that you are going to be living in,” said Wilson. “We are living in an increasingly gender equal society. We aren’t there yet, but it’s the world we live in. By working and learning together, boys and girls can breakdown societal stereotypes that say that this is something that only a girl can do or that is something that only a boy can do.” Trice-Black added, “Potential disadvantages of a single gender camp include missed opportunities to learn how to work with both boys and girls. get ready, get set ...

LET’S GO TO CAMP! Camp can be scary for both parents and kids. Prepare with these tips. BY TRIPLE R Parents often worry how they can make sure their kids are ready for an overnight camp experience. Tidewater Parent Magazine asked veteran Camp Program Director Jeanette Henderson of Triple-R Ranch camp in Chesapeake to provide tips for parents and children to be prepared. Camp is a great way to safely explore the outdoors, practice independence, make new friends, learn about teamwork, be creative and experience many new activities. However, going to camp is a big step for children and parents. How can you be ready? Decide what you want from camp. Talk with your child to see what

kind of camp sounds fun. Then look for a camp that meets your goals. If possible, visit the camp. If your camper has special needs, make sure the camp is prepared and has trained staff for your specific needs. Camp is expensive and you want to make sure it’s a good fit for your child. Ask for the camp’s weekly schedule so your camper can get an idea of what to expect. As you go over the schedule, see what questions or concerns they have. Everyone gets a little homesick, even parents. Remind them that homesickness is perfectly normal. Do not plan an exit strategy. Approach the experience with a

16 | S U M M E R C A M P G U I D E 2 0 1 3 | www.MyTidewaterMoms.com

positive attitude. Camp can play an important role in their growth and development. Mastering a week at camp can be a great confidence builder. Help them pick out a stuffed animal, a picture or favorite item that brings them comfort. Take time to practice at home anything your child may need to know but is not used to doing, such as using a flash light, walking outside in the dark, handling wet or soiled clothes, putting on sun screen, bug repellent and fixing their own hair. Go over the list of things to bring to camp in plenty of time to purchase any items you need. Avoid buying a lot of new clothes. Camp activities are rough on clothing. Have your child help pack. This will help them know what they brought and how to repack it. Provide a laundry bag for dirty clothes. Do not over pack or pack things on the do-not-bring list.

Keep it simple. Use as few toiletries as possible. Products that do double-duty such as shampoo and body wash are great. Do not send bars of soap. Label everything. If someone else is picking up your camper, make sure they know what the child brought to camp. Policies and information often change, make sure you read over all camp literature. Make sure you have all camp forms filled out correctly. Prepare them for meeting and making new friends. To have a good friend, you need to know how to be a good friend. Teach your children that being kind and thoughtful of others is a great start. Campers love mail. If you’re using the postal service, mail letters before they come so you can be sure they get there in time. We’ve found lots of parents bring letters/care packages to check-in

and leave us with directions as to when they want them delivered. It’s helpful to pack stamps and address labels for your camper to use. When writing campers, tell them you miss and love them but make sure you talk about how excited you are they are getting to experience camp. We find they often worry about their parents and love ones while away. If you’ve had a recent tragedy in the family, write more often to let them know you are okay and are happy they are getting to have fun at camp. Most important, help your child understand camp staff is there to help them. Sometimes campers, especially younger ones, are afraid to speak up and ask for things they need. Tell them their counselors and other camp staff members are there to take care of them. If they are homesick, bullied, frightened or have any needs to tell someone.
