On April 29, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana honored their healthcare partners and raised $70,000 with The Soirée 2024 event.

The Food Bank hosted The Soirée 2024 event to honor their healthcare partners, raise donations and bring the community together.

To date, the event has raised $70,000 of the $100,000 goal set.

“We’re always looking for ways to partner and collaborate so that we can expand the impact we have on our community,” said Food Bank President and CEO Victor Garcia. “We really wanted to focus this evening on our Food is Medicine programs.”

Healthcare partners honored were Franciscan Health, Methodist Hospital, HealthLinc, Regional Health Systems, St. Mary Medical Center, Community HealthNet, and Northwest Indiana Community Action.

“One of the reasons the Food Bank chose to engage in Food is Medicine work primarily, was due to the very challenging information we had about the infant mortality rate,” Garcia said.

“Unfortunately, Indiana is one of the worst states in the country for infant mortality, 49.1% of all life births in the state of Indiana are born to women who are on Medicaid.”

“Those are our friends and neighbors at their most vulnerable, and that’s why the Food Bank decided we needed to find a way that we can help those neighbors, so we can get to those folks who need nutrition, not calories, nutrition, to make sure their babies have a chance at a healthy, successful life,” he said.

All donations collected will help the Food Bank bring more programs to their Food is Medicine initiative and fight hunger in Porter and Lake counties. They used a silent auction, champagne raffle, wine barrel raffle, and a heads or tails game to raise donations at the event

“Our friends and neighbors are struggling to get by and they need us today more than ever,” Garcia said. “Note that $1 can supply 3 meals, $100 can provide 11 children with healthy nutritious snacks for the weekend, $500 can provide 20 medically tailored boxes of groceries, $1,000 can buy a truck load of rice, $2,500 can fund over 8000 servings of leafy grains.”

Sponsors at the event included Hard Rock Casino, NIPSCO and NiSource Charitable Foundation, Strack & Van Til, Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, People Bank, Chase Bank, First Financial Bank, Midwest Refrigeration, Wintrust Indiana, and more.

“Strack & Van Til has been a proud supporter of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana since its inception, and we just believe in

giving back and helping solve the food insecurity that is so rapid here in Indiana,” said Jeff Strack, President and CEO of Indiana Grocery Group.

“We’re really invested and engaged in the success of the food bank because it matters in Northwest Indiana and helps our community be a better place,” Strack said.

Food and Drinks were provided by Sue & Kim’s Pies, American Culinary Federation, Asparagus, Frank’s Backyard Barbecue, Indiana Beverage, Ivy Tech, Meals on Wheels, Montego Bay Grille, NWI Food Council Region Roots, St Mary’s Medical Center, Strack & Van Til, Tandoori Cafe, Saturday Sangria Bakery & Cafe, and Windy City Mushrooms.

“It’s partnerships like this that make our community special,” Garcia said. “Their willingness to be innovative and collaborative really makes my job so much easier … such amazing individuals, volunteering their time.”

The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana was founded in 1982. The nonprofit organization distributes food for about 6 million meals annually to kids, adults and seniors in Lake and Porter counties. The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is a member of Feeding America, a nationwide domestic hunger-relief organization and network of 200 food banks across the country.

“When you have fresh produce it changes your health,” said Jennifer Trowbridge, President and CEO of Northwest Indiana Community Action.

“Great things happen when there are great people in great organizations working together,” she said.

Working with NASA might seem out of this world, but a new program aims to show the public that NASA is in agriculture on Earth, not just in space.

On April 23, farmers, researchers and other stakeholders met at the University of Illinois for the inaugural NASA Acres Symposium.

“When you think about NASA, you think about launching rockets or launching satellites, but one of the biggest NASA programs is Earth Science,” said Kaiyu Guan, founder of the Agroecosystem Sustainability Center at U of I.

In March 2023, NASA Acres was established to bridge the gap between space and farms. The program aims to strengthen U.S. agriculture by answering some of the most pressing challenges facing the industry.

NASA Acres works with agriculturalists throughout the U.S. to see how NASA’s resources can be used to help farmers.

Guan, who is also the chief scientist for NASA Acres, said the satellite Earth Observation based data can be used to track and predict the impacts of weather and climate, pest damage and soil tillage.

NASA satellite data can also be used to monitor nutrient loss and deficiencies and help farmers understand the impacts of practices like planting cover crops.

“We’ve been extensively working on crop nitrogen concentration,” Guan told FarmWeek. “We’ve started to have confidence that we can sense how much nitrogen has been absorbed by crops.”

Guan said that by integrating all available data, farmers can determine optimal

Financial freedom: A gift to your family

Here’s a sobering statistic: 72% of retirees say one of their biggest fears is becoming a burden on their families, according to a study by Edward Jones and the consulting firm Age Wave. If you are near retirement, how can you prepare yourself to become financially free, so you won’t have to depend on grown children or other family members?

Here are a few suggestions to consider:

• Keep adding to retirement savings. Today, with a greater awareness of healthy lifestyles, many people are spending two, or even three, decades in an active retirement. To help pay for those years, then, you’ll likely need to build your retirement savings as much as possible. So, while you’re still working, try to contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you are in the later stages of your career, possibly close to your peak earning power, you may be able to put in sizable sums every year.

• Choose an appropriate withdrawal rate. While it’s obviously important to build your retirement savings, it’s just as essential to make the money last. Once you retire, you’ll want to establish an appropriate withdrawal rate — that is, the amount you can take out each year from your 401(k) and other investments without running the risk of outliving your money. The amount you can safely withdraw each year will depend on a variety of factors, including your age, your account balances, Social Security benefits, inflation, income tax rates and spousal income. In any case, selecting a suitable withdrawal rate can help go a long way toward preserving your financial freedom throughout your retirement.

• Think about downsizing. One possible way to boost your savings and add liquidity is to downsize your living arrangements. This may be an attractive option if your children are grown and your current home feels too large. Of course, downsizing is a highly personal decision — if you’ve lived in your home for many years, have fond memories of raising a family in it and still enjoy the neighborhood, it can certainly be hard to leave. Consequently, you’ll need to weigh these emotional factors against the potential financial benefits of moving into a smaller, less expensive space.

• Prepare for long-term care costs. If you were ever to need some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home, you could face some sizable expenses, most of which may not be covered by Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. And clearly, you would not want to put your grown children in a position where they might feel the need to step in financially. To help avoid this possibility, you may want to consult with a financial professional about addressing these costs through strategies that may be appropriate for your needs. These aren’t the only ideas to consider in helping maintain your financial independence and reducing your potential dependence on your family during your retirement years. But taken together, they can give you a good start — so think about putting them to work. management practices for rotation patterns, cover crop adoption and tillage methods. “This can help the whole system reduce nitrogen loss,” he said.

Alyssa Whitcraft, NASA Acres executive director and associate research professor at the University of Maryland, said although NASA has been involved with agriculture since the 1970s, there has been a disconnect between the data and the farmer.

But throughout the past decade, Whitcraft said NASA has focused more on connecting with farmers to find the data that helps them.

Whitcraft said one of the main objectives of the program is to ensure NASA Acres’ data can be integrated into some of the tools farmers already use. More than 30 agriculture and research groups, including Illinois Farm Bureau and U of I, are helping the program achieve this goal.

“Whether farmers use a preferred system for visualization when they’re inside their combine or their sprayer, we would like our data and our tools to enrich that,” Whitcraft said.

The next step is to inform farmers that they can access findings, data and tools and continue to provide their input through NASAacres.org.

“We know that success is predicated on farmer involvement,” Whitcraft said. “Our mission, paid for by public dollars, is to support farmers in having a productive, sustainable and resilient system to support their rural communities for decades and generations to come.”

I was like a lot of people who was aware of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy but never really thought much about it until about three years ago when my son, Mason, was diagnosed with the disease.

Duchenne is a genetic disorder characterized by the progressive loss of muscle. It is a multisystemic condition, affecting many parts of the body, which results in deterioration of the skeletal, heart, and lung muscles. Duchenne is caused by a change in the dystrophin gene. Without dystrophin, muscles are not able to function or repair themselves properly.

Because the dystrophin gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects males, while females are typically carriers.

We found out my wife is a carrier, which is why Mason was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and why my youngest son, Dawson, was also diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Knowing that both of our sons have what is essentially a death sentence was and is devastating. Every case is different. The average life expectancy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is 20 to 30 years. Our kids are very young, so we remain hopeful that with the right research and medical advancements, they will beat the odds.

Gene therapy seems to be helping to mitigate the effects of the disease in our children, but it is far from a cure. More research is needed and to make that happen, we need to create more awareness about the disease in the public.

To that end, I joined other parents like me

in conjunction with Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), a nonprofit organization leading the fight to end Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, for an advocacy day in Springfield.

Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy has initiated a pilot project to focus on state-specific advocacy efforts and Illinois has been selected as the inaugural state for this initiative.

The Advocacy Day in Illinois focused on highlighting key legislative measures, including:

• House Resolution 636, which designates Sept. 7, 2024, as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Day in Illinois.

• Senate Bill 3277, which seeks to implement newborn screening for Duchenne in Illinois.

• SB 3277, which aims to develop mandatory protocols and best practices for providing medical guidance for Duchenne. I urge lawmakers to enact these commonsense bills and help Illinois become a leader in the fight for a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It is not easy to tell our story, but it is an important one to tell. My family is not the first one to deal with this terrible disease and we certainly won’t be the last. We love our children and we are committed to doing everything we can to ensure other families do not have to go through this. We are trying to change history and with the help of the Illinois Legislature we can and will get closer to the cure families like mine are fighting for every single day.

Daniel Flessner lives in Roberts with his wife, Lindsey, and their sons, Mason and Dawson.

Heart Smart

Here’s a litmus test for your heart:

What do you get angry about?

What I, and you, choose to get angry about speaks volumes about what we truly care about, what we love. Emotional energy is precious, and when we choose to spend it getting angry, we’re subconsciously declaring where our priorities lie.

A nasty traffic encounter, an embarrassing conversation, a technology malfunction, [insert your own personal kryptonite here] — all have the potential to derail our day, or they can fall like water off a duck’s back. The choice is up to us — and it’s based in our hearts.

Like so many sins, sinful anger is actually a distortion of a God-ordained response to injustice and wrongdoing. Ephesians 4:26 says simply, “Be angry and do not sin.” This means that there is a right way to be angry.

Which brings us to the litmus test. What does our anger actually tell us about ourselves? If your spouse didn’t do the dishes and that angers you, is your anger really about the dishes? Or do you feel entitled in your relationship? Are you selfishly hoarding your time and expecting your spouse to make the sacrifices? So many of our anger outbursts have root issues like these!

Here’s a simple but profound takeaway: If you love rightly, you’ll be angry rightly.

When you truly love your neighbor — your kids, your spouse, your boss, the guy in the car who just cut you off, the barista who got your order wrong — more than yourself, you will find yourself being less angry. In fact, instead of being angry AT them, you can start to become angry FOR them, advocating on their behalf and fighting for God’s justice in the world.

Your anger may be powerful, but being equipped with the love of Jesus Christ is even more powerful. Where is your heart today?

The Mobile Museum of Tolerance Honors Illinois Student Champions in Anti-Hate Essay Contest

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, through its Illinois Mobile Museum of Tolerance, announced the winners of its 4th annual “Your Voice: Changing the World, One Speech at a Time” contest. The competition, which was open to students between 6th - 12th grades, challenged participants to craft a three-minute, 450-word essay based on Simon Wiesenthal’s statement: “The history of man is the history of crimes, and history can repeat. So information is a defense against repetition.”

More than 50 students from across Illinois showcased their dedication to embracing tolerance through compelling essays, sharing their insights and experiences. Finalists transformed their essays into recorded speeches that were evaluated by a distinguished panel on April 14.

“By engaging students, schools, and communities, the Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT) seeks to empower individuals to recognize the threats of intolerance and take meaningful steps toward a more inclusive and compassionate society,” said Jacqueline Carroll, Director of the Mobile Museum of Tolerance. “The purpose of this essay contest was to engage students to think creatively about how they can combat hate and promote tolerance in their lives and in their communities. We are proud to have had such a strong response from Illinois’ students.”

The winners of this year’s contest are as follows:

• Amelia Hwang, a 6th grader from Oscar Mayer Magnet School in Chicago, emphasized the pivotal role of information in catalyzing change in our contemporary world, securing victory in the middle school division. Ruby Durgin, an 8th grader from Percy Julian Middle School in Oak Park, took second place, with Amanda Warmington, a 7th grader from John R. Lewis School in Waukegan, securing third place.

• Amine Onochie, a 12th grader from Disney II Magnet High School in Chicago, whose

essay underscored the significance of learning from history to foster individual and societal growth. Eden Duckworth, a 10th grader from Fairfield Community High School in Fairfield, secured second place, while Lucas Rosenthal, also a 10th grader from Gillespie High School in Gillespie, claimed third place.

This year’s contest finalists’ speeches are available for viewing here: https://vimeo. com/935570207/15f66c6ec8.

Speaking Of Seniors

Good News For Dyer Client

On April 12, 2024, I wrote a letter to a client to give him good news about a hospital bill. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent.

You sent a bill to our Schererville office for us to check for you. The Schererville office forwarded the bill to me. The bill sought a balance of $1,632 for services rendered at a local hospital during February of this year.

I phoned the headquarters of the insurance company that you selected through our insurance agency. I asked what they knew about this bill. They already paid this bill. Here are the details.

The bill is dated March 26, 2024. That is when the hospital sent the bill to you. The insurance company sent the hospital a check on March 31, 2024. On April 8, 2024, that check was cashed by the hospital. So, the bill was paid.

For that reason, I did not contact the hospital about this bill. According to your insurance company, when it got the bill

details from Medicare, it paid the bill quickly. The problem should be solved. Thank you for allowing us to help you with your insurance needs.

All the help that I gave this client – and every client – is free of charge. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to help clients with Medicare medical bill problems to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, shouldn’t you think of switching to an insurance agency that does?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by correcting medical bill errors in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

Real Estate Questions & Answers

Question: I’m a first time home buyer. I’m 18 years old and getting married in April to a man who is 23 years old. He has good credit but I’m afraid we won’t be able to get a mortgage in time for the wedding.

He has two car loans already and his jobs aren’t really that great. If you put all three of his jobs together he makes around six to seven hundred dollars a week.

Where do you think would be the best place for us to get a loan. Where is the first place we should try?

Answer: You should be congratulated for thinking ahead and your future husband should be recognized for his willingness to work.

It’s not necessary to have a mortgage in place by the time you’re married. In fact, it may not be a good choice. The reason is that you, at age 18, need some time to either continue your education or get a job. The first choice will increase your potential earnings while the second will help you generate dollars that can be used to build savings and pay off those pesky car loans.

Before buying a home you need to consider your local market and your preferences. Are home prices rising or falling? Is the job base

growing? Is the population increasing? How will you get to work? Where will you be living in five years?

You can speak with several lenders regarding loan programs that might work for you. Once you can qualify for a program you will know how much house you can afford. Then speak with a local broker regarding properties now available that would meet your needs.

As to a new home by your wedding day, allow me to suggest that you are best served carefully examining your options and waiting until the right property is available. If that happens by your wedding day that’s great; if not, that’s okay too. The purchase of a home is a long-term investment, a process which should not be rushed.

Illinois Students Earn Awards, Career Path Preparation at SkillsUSA Workforce Championships

PEORIA – They poured concrete to lay bricks. They built tiny buildings, repaired diesel engines, and raced the clock and each other to be the best at more than 150 events – and they just might have found their successful career path in the process.

Students from Chicago’s northern suburbs to deep Southern Illinois arrived in Peoria April 25 for the SkillsUSA Illinois 2024 Championships determined to prove they could be the best at about 150 competitions showcasing their hard work in workforce career development over the past school year. Some left the event April 27 with awards for their winning work, but all put themselves in position to be winners in their career field.

The Championships were again sponsored this year by Caterpillar Inc. and the City of Peoria as thousands filled the Peoria Civic Center for a three-day celebration of students’ and schools’ commitment to career and technical education (CTE). The annual event – held in some form for 60 years now through SkillsUSA -- is made possible by hundreds of industry partners, trade associations and labor organizations who volunteer countless hours to judge the competitions as students race against the clock and each other to prove their expertise in manufacturing, electronics, computer-aided drafting, culinary arts, construction, hospitality, human services and much more. Winners of the statewide Championships will now go on to compete in the national SkillsUSA Championships this June in Atlanta, GA. A full list of winners and top finishers in each category along with a detailed list of the Championships’ participating schools is included below. More information is

available at: https://www.skillsusaillinois.org/the-championships.

For SkillsUSA Illinois, the event is a true celebration of each school’s year tireless work to help students learn the hard and soft skills they need to succeed in dozens of fields, and a reminder of the work ahead to expand these opportunities to more students and help more employers.

SkillsUSA programming is supported by a state grant under the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship program. Gov. JB Pritzker has proposed a $10 million increase in CTE funding for next year, and Skills will be advocating for that and other CTE expansion opportunities in the final weeks of the Legislature’s spring session. State Sen. Dave Koehler and State Rep. Travis Weaver, both of the Peoria area, were on hand to watch the competitions.

“Each year, the Championships remind us just how lucky we are: to have so many students, advisors and team members who fully buy in to our mission to help connect employers with the future skilled workforce; and so many supportive families, volunteers, industry partners and sponsors such as Caterpillar and the City of Peoria who know how important our work is for today and tomorrow,” said SkillsUSA Illinois Executive Director Eric Hill.

“We hope our local legislators who attended can work with us to build on our momentum with more support for CTE programming, and that our students will run full speed ahead in their career paths with the support and confidence from the SkillsUSA experience.”

Mother’s Day

Being a mother is part of my identity. As a mother of three adult children, the hardest part about being a mother for me was letting go so they could become the people God intended them to be. It can be emotionally hard watching their first steps and holding back from rushing in to make sure they don’t fall. I recognized that sometimes you must allow your children to fall so they can learn to get back up themselves, which builds resilience and character.

I chose not to shelter or smother my children by allowing them to experience the world without me being overbearing. I wanted them to engage the world by being in it versus being afraid of it or isolated from it. Despite this, I was never too far away. Although we’re typically within reach of our children, within a yell or phone call away, we can’t be with them always. I wanted them to learn to make decisions and depend on God for answers and reassurance. Mothers, like Jesus’ mother, Mary, must trust in God to guide, protect, counsel, and be the shining light on the path of our children’s feet. This can be extremely hard to do.

I remember all those nervous moments of firsts for them: first day, first day of school, first date, first day driving alone, first heartbreak, first day at college, and many others. I recall times when they seemed so angry when they didn’t get their way because “mom” said “no”. I recollect the days when they said sorry, thanks, or you were right. Those moments in my life were filled with an array of emotions and love for my children. Those good, bad or frustrating moments is when God blessed me with comfort as only He can.

May is National

As a mother, it seems like our job is never done. Why would we want it to be? It’s a joy to be a part of their lives and to provide some comfort to them as God has provided comfort to us. It appears to get easier as they grow up, move out, and have a life or family, but it’s not. Now is the time to step out with faith that God will protect your children and family because we’re not there 24/7. If you don’t have faith, belief, and trust in God, it makes our jobs as mothers difficult and nerve-racking. Faith builds trust as noted in Psalm 25:1 “Of David. In you, Lord my God, I put my trust” (NIV).

I say all this to remind me during motherly emotional moments of my faith in God:

…as I watched my daughter this week embark on her next great adventure of traveling to 9 European countries for 5 to 6 weeks with a return date unknown.

…when she became a travel nurse on the West Coast three years ago.

…when my son decided to build a life in Michigan.

…when my children went away to college.

…even to the beginning when my children were born.

…and that I may be a mother, but God is the Greatest Father. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds all of us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”. May the Lord make our paths straight and our children’s as well. Have a Happy Mother’s Day! Y? Why Not!

Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Announces New Hate Crimes Specialist to Bolster Community Engagement Efforts

CHICAGO - In response to the growing need to address hate crimes amid a challenging global climate, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) proudly announces it is currently accepting applications for the new role of a dedicated Hate Crimes Specialist. This critical role will support the CCSAO Against Hate, Education & Outreach Program, focusing on enhancing community awareness, education, and response strategies to combat hate crimes.

“In the face of rising hate crimes, it’s crucial that we proactively cultivate a culture of tolerance and understanding,” said Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx. “This appointment represents our dedication to fostering unity and empathy, as we recognize that hate has no place in a just society. By addressing hate crimes head-on and empowering communities to stand together against bigotry, we take a significant step towards building a more inclusive and equitable future for all.”

The Hate Crimes Specialist will play a pivotal role in collaborating with community organizations, activists, law enforcement, and policymakers to elevate public awareness and develop effective hate crime policies and training programs. Core responsibilities will include conducting seminars and training sessions to educate CCSAO staff and the public on recognizing and addressing hate crimes, establishing, and maintaining relationships with stakeholders to enhance hate crime reporting, and leading the formation of a CCSAO Hate Crime Council to inform policy decisions and improve investigation and prosecution procedures.

Throughout the first quarter of this year, the office has created and actively engaged with various new community groups, including the Middle Eastern North African Advisory Group, and Immigration Advisory Council (MENA) and the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Advisory Council (AANHPIA), with more to come to gather insights and perspectives directly from those working within our communities.

IRS to taxpayers, tax pros: Notorious, costly tax scams

are still out there!

The Internal Revenue Service warns taxpayers and tax professionals to remain alert and beware of these common scams, schemes and cons to avoid losing money, personal information or client data--

Social media “Friends” pushing fraudulent form filing and bad advice

Social media can circulate inaccurate or misleading tax information, and the IRS has recently seen schemes that encourage people to submit false, inaccurate information in hopes of getting a refund or taking advantage of a credit, such as the Employee Retention Credit. Taxpayers should always remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Taxpayers can follow the IRS on X (formerly Twitter) with @IRStaxsecurity for help avoiding common scams that could put their money and information at risk.

Online Account “help” from third-party scammers

Swindlers pose as a “helpful” third party and offer to create a taxpayer’s IRS Online Account at IRS.gov. The scammers making these offers are trying to steal a taxpayer’s personal information. Taxpayers should access their account directly through IRS.gov.

Don’t get harpooned by phishing and spearphishing

Taxpayers and tax professionals should be alert to fake communications -- phishing and spearphishing -- posing as legitimate organizations in the tax and financial community, including the IRS and the states. These messages arrive in the form of an unsolicited text or email to lure victims into providing valuable personal and financial information that can lead to identity theft.

Spearphishing is a tailored phishing attempt targeting a specific organization or business. Tax professionals need to be very careful about spearphishing because of the risk of a data breach. A successful spearphishing attack can ultimately steal client data and the tax

preparer’s identity, allowing the thief to file fraudulent returns.

Shady tax return preparers

Most tax preparers provide outstanding and professional service. However, people should be careful of unscrupulous tax professionals and watch for common warning signs, including charging a fee based on the size of the refund. A major red flag or bad sign is when the tax preparer is unwilling to sign the dotted line. Avoid these “ghost” preparers, who will prepare a tax return but refuse to sign or include their IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number as required by law. Taxpayers should never sign a blank or incomplete return.

Offer in compromise mills

Offers in compromise are an important program to help people who can’t pay to settle their federal tax debts for less than the full amount owed. But offer in compromise “mills” make exaggerated claims with ads about settling tax debts inexpensively. They can aggressively promote offers in compromise in misleading ways to people who clearly don’t meet the qualifications. These “mills” often charge excessive fees, costing taxpayers thousands of dollars for a service they could have gotten directly from the IRS. A taxpayer can check their eligibility for free with the IRS Offer in Compromise Pre-Qualifier tool.

Employee Retention Credit scams

Some unscrupulous promoters have misrepresented eligibility rules for the Employee Retention Credit, luring well-intentioned businesses to claim the credit when they don’t qualify. The IRS is highlighting seven suspicious signs and urging businesses to seek a trusted tax professional to resolve an incorrect claim if they need to. With ERC compliance work expanding, the IRS reminds businesses to quickly pursue the claim withdrawal process if they need to ask the IRS not to process an ERC claim for any tax period that hasn’t been paid yet.
