Exemptions Deadline is April 29

Cook County – Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi announced the deadline for homeowners to apply for property tax exemptions is Monday, April 29, 2024.

Exemptions are property tax savings that contribute to lowering a property owner’s tax bill.

“My goal is to ensure that homeowners receive all the moneysaving exemptions to which they are entitled,” Assessor Kaegi said. “Until April 29, homeowners can visit our website or office locations to apply for exemptions.”

As a reminder, homeowners must reapply for the Veterans with Disabilities and Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze (the “Senior Freeze”) Exemptions. Seniors and veterans that need to reapply were mailed application booklets. These should be returned by April 29, or homeowners can apply online to make the deadline.

If a property owner who did not receive such a booklet believes

they are eligible for one of these exemptions, they should apply online or in-person by April 29.

The Homeowner, Senior, and Persons with Disabilities Exemptions are automatically renewed.

All homeowners are strongly encouraged to apply online. This allows staff to easily locate the application, provide a status update, and notify the homeowner if missing documents are needed.

New homeowners, first-time applicants, or those that need to reapply can do so online by visiting www.cookcountyassessor. com/exemptions. Applying online is easy, free, and can be done in under ten minutes.

Exemptions forms are available in Spanish, Polish, and simplified Chinese languages. Applications can be downloaded at www.cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions.

Savings from exemptions are only reflected on the second installment tax bill.

10 MINUTES TO LIFE

We never seem to have enough time to do what we want, desire, or plan to do. Sixty minutes in an hour, twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days per year. The average American lives 76.33 years per 2021 stats, but we never have enough time. However, time seems to be a missing commodity when it comes to doing what we “say” we want to do. We all have a list of things we want to do. We have several types of lists: bucket lists, daily to-do lists, want-to-accomplish lists, and goals lists. However, as the minutes turn into days, weeks, and years, instead of the items on the list being checked off, the words start fading on the page from time passing by. Unfortunately, other items get checked off from another list we hold dear: the excuses list. We use the excuse of being too costly, working too much/too tired, and the ultimate “not enough time”. These excuses need to be thrown out the door! Too costly: not everything requires money to complete them. If you want to learn a language, get in shape, or write your memoirs can be completed without or with limited cost. There are free apps for learning, exercises to do at home, and pen and paper to write with. Working does not take all the hours and minutes of your life. Most people don’t work a total of 168 hours in the week. There’s time for work, sleep, and other things in the week. Working can be exhausting and draining especially if that seems to be all that you do, but it’s not. Then, there’s my favorite excuse: not enough time. There are six 10-minute increments in an hour and 144 increments in a day. Why is it so hard for us to dedicate even one of those 10 minutes to moving forward and making

April is National Financial Literacy Month — a good reminder that all of us can benefit from boosting our financial knowledge. But what is financial literacy? There’s no one single definition, but the term certainly covers these areas:

• Saving – Most of us would probably agree that saving money is important, but actually doing it can be challenging given all the expenses of modern living. Still, techniques are available that everyone can follow, such as having money automatically moved each month from a checking or savings account to a financial account that’s not used for daily expenses.

• Budgeting – Budgeting isn’t necessarily a fun activity — but it’s an important one. And it’s easier than ever these days, given the variety of budgeting tools available online. By tracking your spending every month and organizing it into categories, you may be able to find areas where you can cut back, such as on streaming services you rarely use.

• Borrowing – Virtually all of us carry some type of debt at various times in our lives. But it’s important to manage your debt load so it doesn’t become too burdensome. One way of achieving this goal is to use “good” debts wisely — such as a low-rate mortgage on your home — and avoid “bad” debts — such as high-rate credit cards used for unnecessary purchases.

• Investing – As you go through life, you’ll likely have a variety of financial goals, such as making a down payment on a house, sending your children to college and attaining a comfortable retirement lifestyle. And to achieve these goals, you’ll need to invest for them. That’s why it’s important to learn about different types of investments and how to develop an investment strategy

that’s appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon.

We aren’t born with these skills — we have to learn them. Unfortunately, as valuable as they are, they aren’t widely taught to young people. In fact, according to a 2023 Edward Jones study conducted with Morning Consult, only 20% of respondents reported receiving financial education in school. This situation may be changing, though, as many states are now requiring or recommending personal finance education before high school graduation.

For now, though, if you have younger children, try to teach them money management skills. You will likely find that they enjoy learning about these matters. You can make it fun for them in different ways, too. For example, to teach them about investing, why not buy them a share or two of stock of a company with which they’re familiar? Charting a stock’s progress and learning something of the factors affecting its price can help children build a foundation in investing, which will be valuable when they reach the age when they can invest for themselves.

But financial education isn’t just for kids. If you feel that you are lacking somewhat in any of the key financial management areas mentioned above, you can always educate yourself by reading or talking to people knowledgeable in these subjects. You also might find it valuable to work with a financial professional — someone who will take a holistic approach to your finances and make appropriate suggestions.

National Financial Literacy Month will end on April 30, but the benefits of financial literacy can last a lifetime.

progress toward items on our lists? But lots of us don’t miss an hour of our favorite daytime soap opera. Millions watched the three-hour Avengers: Endgame. MixBloom website 2024 article “Average Time Spent on Social Media” cites the average user spends 2 hours and 41 minutes a day on social media. And I haven’t gotten into time spent on gaming apps! So, how is there not enough time?

We can spend hours upon hours on activities that will not eliminate any items on the desired lists. Hours! But we can’t dedicate at least 10 minutes a day to what is important to us. Ask yourself, why is devoting 10 minutes daily so hard? Utilizing 10 minutes a day to life, from age 21 to 76 is 200,750 minutes or 139.4 days to completing any item listed. But we say we don’t have time!

The time is there! It’s how you choose to utilize your time is where the value lies in what you ultimately do with that time. Do you value your time? Time is a limited commodity. Once it’s used, we can’t get it back. It’s gone! We can’t turn back time. In the end, when look back on our lives, we will see the results of that dedicated 10 minutes a day. Was it time that made a difference or not? Did the 10 minutes better your life? Did we use it to complete the items on your lists? Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 reminds us that “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” … We can decide to utilize 10 minutes a day for life to get more out of life or waste 10 minutes a day and get less out of life. The ultimate choice is ours to decide. Waste not, want not! Use more, get more! Y? Why Not!

Illinois residents will no longer have to notarize documents in person under a new Electronic-Notary system administered by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office. Electronic Notarization, or “E-Notary,” will radically change the way people and use notary services, Giannoulias predicted. Without leaving the home or office, an individual or business can have their documents notarized and signed electronically within minutes.

“In keeping with our ongoing effort to modernize the Secretary of State’s office, E-Notary serves as a game-changer for Illinoisians by now providing a convenient way to notarize documents without leaving their home or office,” Giannoulias said. “Enabling commissioned notaries to work virtually makes the process faster and more secure for individuals and businesses alike.”

E-Notary allows both the customer and notary to sign with an electronic signature, and to electronically attach both the notarial certificate and notary seal to a document.

In 2021, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation to allow the Secretary of State to implement electronic notarization.

Upon taking office last year, Giannoulias made it a priority to gain state approval of administrative rules, create a new application reflecting the E-Notary requirements, review and approve E-Notary technology platform providers, and train staff to process the new E-Notary applications.

Illinois now joins 47 other states that allow electronic notaries to operate. Although Illinois had allowed remote notarization, it required all parties, (the notaries, signers, and witnesses) to be located

in Illinois. Additionally, while someone could sign the document remotely by audio-video communication, the notary had to sign the notarized paper document and apply the notary seal in ink. With E-Notary, the document, signing, and seal are all electronically applied, dramatically reducing the time it takes to notarize a document. Additionally, while the notary must be present in Illinois, the other parties may be located outside the state.

To find a notary who offers electronic notarization, customers can visit ilsos.gov/ notarysearch. Customers will need a computer, phone or other device that supports audiovideo communication and a valid form of identification to complete the notarization electronically.

When getting a document notarized, the notary public or electronic notary will:

• Require the customer to personally appear before them via an audio-video communication platform during the notarization.

• Check over the document to ensure its complete and verify the name on the document matches the customer’s ID.

• Confirm the identity of the customer by examining their ID.

• Once steps 1 through 3 are done, the customer will be permitted to sign the document electronically.

• The Notary Public will then complete the notarial certificate and affix their seal.

Heart Smart

Think big. If our sun were the size of a basketball, the earth would be slightly larger than the head of a pin. Our sun is an average-sized star in a vast universe filled with stars. One estimate: there are 300 sextillion stars in the universe. That’s the number 3 followed by 23 zeros. Or 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 enormous balls of gas, clustered into billions of galaxies swirling in perfect sync, conducted by their Creator who calls each one by name.

Think small. The cell is the basic building block of every living thing. Your body is made up of trillions of cells. Each is a fine-tuned factory with intricate machinery working together to perform a function. Each contains your unique blueprint. These cells come together as diverse organs which, in turn, work together in finely-tuned systems that allow you to function moment by moment.

Think smaller. The atom is the basic building block of the universe. Hydrogen excepted, every atom has a nucleus of multiple protons that cling to one another. Like positively charged magnets, they should repel one another. Yet a powerful, awe-inspiring force holds them together. If it didn’t, everything would fly apart.

None of this is accidental. Jesus “is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). In a world where so much falls apart, including us, he’s also the one who came to put it all back together. Including us. “God was pleased… through him to reconcile to himself all things… by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:19a,20).

At the heart of his plan to put it together, to hold it together, to put it back together, is his plan to put us back together in relationship with him. Call on Jesus. Be reconciled to God.

CHICAGO - When Javon Hill, a lanky 22-year-old African American male from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood was called from the audience to speak before the Illinois Senate in Springfield last Wednesday afternoon, he drew stares.

Unlike the mostly white, middle-aged audience dressed in suits and other professional attire, Hill sported gym clothes, wearing a T-shirt of the rapper Trippie Redd in dreadlocks with his tongue sticking out. Hill also wears his hair in dreadlocks and his body is accented by tattoos.

But the look of shock quickly turned to amazement as Hill spoke eloquently about why the Senate should pass SB0001, which calls for the creation of the Department of Early Childhood, an agency that will become the sole provider for offering early childhood education, care programs and services to children and families.

Sitting next to Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, who sponsored the bill last month, Hill said the agency is needed because the state must do more to grab the attention of children who are getting educated by new technologies, celebrities and other influencers over the Internet.

“It will really improve the lives of the next generation of kids who are not really being paid attention to. It will really show our parents and let people know we have real pains going on, and we have real community issues that we can overcome, and now we can because of the support we get from Ms. Cynthia Williams (of the Austin Peoples Action Center) and Senator Lightford,” said Hill, who comments brought some members of the audience to tears.

Hill was a member of a delegation of young men who traveled to Springfield on behalf of the Austin Peoples Action Centers (APAC), the legendary social service agency located at 5125 W. North Ave. They departed from the city’s West Side, along with the organization’s founder and executive director, Cynthia Williams, and several members of her staff, to the state’s capitol as part of APAC’s Freedom School Advocacy Day. During the day-long visit, they attended the Executive Committee’s hearing to advocate for Senate Bill 0001 and to build awareness about APAC’s Freedom School, an afterschool program that provides education and other enrichment support programs for children. The delegation also met with Senator Lightford (D-4th), who lived in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood when she was a toddler, and the students were included in a documentary being produced on Lightford’s work to enhance educational opportunities for children in underserved communities. Prior to the executive session, Lightford explained to the

delegation the process of moving a community concern from an idea to a law, what happens in session, and the protocol for addressing the Senate.

“You have to be my children, but you have to be quiet to be my children, or security will put you out,” Lightford warned the young men. “It is not a space in a democracy that permits blurting out from the audience. You cannot speak if you are not recognized. If any of you want to testify on behalf of the community, let me know.”

Hill informed the senator that he wanted to testify. After the Senate voted, the delegation departed quietly.

“My sons, they made me proud. My soul is on fire,” said Williams, who said civic engagement is a major component of the Freedom School and other APAC programs that target youth and young adults. “This is why I continue to do this kind of work after 44 years. I just love my kids to life. They did an amazing job.”

As they walked away from the hearing and the distinguished crowds gathered in the halls of the Capitol, Williams said full of pride to the young men, whom she describes as her “street sons,” “This is how a bill gets passed.”

Her street sons said the next time they return to Springfield they want to be dressed in suits. Williams, crediting the state for providing APAC with funding that makes civic engagement trips possible, said she has appealed to business and other power brokers to help her purchase suits for the young men.

One year later: Chicago’s two Centers for Species Survival report conservation progress for Earth Day

CHICAGO (April 17, 2024)– Chicago’s two Centers for Species Survival are reporting progress on Earth Day, one year after being established to conserve trees and freshwater ecosystems and raising awareness of the need to prevent irreversible species extinction.

Since their designations in March 2023, The Morton Arboretum’s Center for Species Survival: Trees and Shedd Aquarium’s Center for Species Survival: Freshwater have further advanced their ongoing conservation efforts in their respective fields and geographic areas, while also developing plans to collaborate on community-based conservation of the Cotón River watershed in Costa Rica. The Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the world’s largest conservation organization, has designated only 18 such centers globally, with six in North America.

“Having two Centers for Species Survival here has raised Chicago’s international profile as an ecosystem preservation hub,” said Silvia Alvarez-Clare, Ph.D., the Arboretum’s director of global tree conservation. “Earth Day provides the opportunity to highlight our work with local partners to safeguard biodiversity— in some of the most ecologically threatened areas of the world for current and future generations.”

Yasmín Quintana, Ph.D., Shedd’s manager for the Center Species Survival: Freshwater, said, “The impact of the Centers for Species Survival has allowed us to spark curiosity and compassion for the care and preservation of our natural treasures with a diverse public. I am thrilled to continue to elevate conversations around the importance of our planet’s trees and unique life underwater in honor of Earth Day.”

Latin America and Southeast Asia are key study areas for the Arboretum’s Center, while Shedd’s Center focuses largely on Central America, all locations with many threatened species.

The Chicago-based Centers for Species Survival are partly funded by the Walder Foundation, a private family foundation based in Skokie, Illinois, that champions Chicago through its investment in five key areas, including environmental sustainability.

Center for Species Survival: Trees

The work of the Arboretum focuses on promoting the understanding of rare and threatened tree species through scientific research, working with communities to conserve and

recover tree populations and ecosystems, and activating key audiences both in Chicago and around the world.

In Mexico, the Center’s work resulted in more than 250 herbarium specimens collected for research, and the documentation of a new population of the endangered oak, Quercus flocculenta. In the state of Baja California Sur, 20 new individuals of the critically endangered tree species Guaiacum unijugum were discovered—doubling the known number of this rare species. Seedlings are being propagated for restoration efforts.

In Costa Rica and Guatemala, the Arboretum’s team is working with local partners to restore the tropical cloud forest’s ecosystem through integrated conservation efforts with communities and protected-area managers.

During the first year, the Center led more than 20 training workshops and outreach activities across six countries, empowering hundreds of people to advance tree conservation efforts. Among them, in Thailand and Vietnam, workshops for local botanists and conservationists helped them learn how to build capacity and assess the extinction risk of tree species. In Mexico, the Arboretum’s team worked with local women to create plant guides for ecotourism activities.

As part of its effort to increase conservation reach and impact, the Arboretum selected eight Chicago-area teachers, grades 6-12, for an education-focused forest immersion trip to Costa Rica in March. The teachers learned from local experts and community members about the importance and challenges of conserving tropical ecosystems and are using the experience to prepare curricula for their students.

“Education is a fundamental component of our work,” said Alvarez-Clare. “By supporting local educators to create innovative and experience-based curricula, we hope to reach hundreds of students to inspire their continued learning about the natural world and become advocates for biodiversity conservation.”

Center for Species Survival: Freshwater

Similarly, the Shedd Center’s fieldwork has taken researchers into muddy, crocodile-filled waters to uncover, understand and identify Central American freshwater mussels—animals that are not only among the most imperiled groups in the world but also have very scarce available data. Freshwater mussels in Central

Flexibility Fadeout: Majority of Illinois Workers Say They are Happy to Be Back in the Office, Finds Survey.

As has been widely reported, a significant shift is taking place in the workforce. Many employees who had grown accustomed to the flexibility and comfort of working from home are now being encouraged to return to the office full-time. While this transition initially faced resistance, a recent survey commissioned by Wealth of Geeks reveals that once employees settle back into the office routine, they are experiencing a renewed sense of happiness and fulfillment.

The survey, which polled 3,000 workers who have returned to the office full-time, asked participants to rate their happiness on a scale of 1-10. The results were encouraging, with the average Illinois employee rating their work happiness at an impressive 7 out of 10. This finding suggests that despite the initial challenges of leaving behind the work-from-home setup, employees are quickly adapting and finding joy in the office environment once again.

So, what’s making everyone so happy?

For a whopping 56% of respondents, it’s all about those faceto-face conversations. No more awkward Zoom lag or trying to decipher their coworker’s tone through email – now they can chat, laugh, and collaborate in person. 20% of employees confessed that having some personal space away from their partner is bringing them a little slice of joy.

But it’s not just about the people – 14% of respondents are thrilled to be dressing up for work again, saying goodbye to pajamas, and hello to confidence-boosting work attire! And who can resist the allure of free office perks? Finally, 10% of respondents cheekily admitted that indulging in office perks like

free stationery or coffee was the biggest benefit of returning to the workplace.

When it came to what Illinoisans missed most about office life, team lunches or happy hours topped the charts. Over half of us longed for those casual hangouts that are just too hard to replicate online. The morning coffee run scooped up 20% of the nostalgia vote, while 16% missed the good old water cooler gossip - apparently, some conversations aren’t meant for Slack.

Perhaps considered a perk of office life, more than a third of employees who have returned to the office full time say they have found a ‘work wife/work husband’.

Interestingly, when asked to pick a theme song for their return to office life, the choices reflected a mix of nostalgia and humor:

1. “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake.

2. “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child.

3. “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton.

4. “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.

5. “Let’s Get It Started” by The Black Eyed Peas.

6. “A Whole New World” from Aladdin.

7. “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor.

Reflecting on these findings, Michael Dinich of Wealth of Geeks, commented, “The shift back to office work has indeed been a period of adjustment, but also one of rediscovery. Employees are reconnecting not just with colleagues but with elements of their professional identities that were overshadowed by remote work. It’s clear that the office offers a unique environment where collaboration and community thrive, enhancing overall happiness and productivity.”

America remain understudied and knowledge gaps hamper managers’ ability to strategize and perform conservation actions.

The journeys to Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador have garnered the documentation of new mussel records as well as rich opportunities to collaborate with local partners to elevate awareness and support future protection of biodiversity-rich areas.

Through expeditions throughout Central America, the Center has provided field experiences and training for researchers to conduct freshwater mussel surveys, take tissue samples and preserve specimens. To support the expansion of freshwater mussel knowledge and protection, the Center partnered with eight key stakeholders from Central America’s academic and government sectors to support conservation locally.

This year, the team explored 32 survey sites in Costa Rica and 11 sites in El Salvador. In Costa Rica, they uncovered four different species of freshwater mussels. Three mussels were native to the region, and one was a non-native species from Asia, the Chinese pond mussel. In El Salvador, three native species and one non-native species were found.

“By expanding research efforts and collaboration, we aim to create ripple effects that will ultimately help safeguard precious freshwater ecosystems and species at risk,” said Quintana. “The verification of specimens, the field training and curatorial assistance provided by our freshwater mussel expert Dr. Kentaro Inoue are helping develop a foundation of freshwater scientists through meaningful partnerships in the region.”

The fieldwork encouraged collaboration with scientists from the Field Museum of Natural History and Universidad de Costa Rica to research freshwater fishes in Costa Rica, targeting species classified as data deficient.

The Center’s efforts throughout Central America have helped to expand freshwater key biodiversity areas, establish a strategic network and increase capacity for support. Work has already begun on a gap analysis of threatened species for freshwater fishes and mussels in Central America based on the Global Red List of Threatened Species and National Lists of Endangered Species.

In Latin America, Southeast Asia and beyond, the Centers will continue to partner with local communities to advance biodiversity research and conservation efforts, inspire conservation action worldwide and safeguard species for generations to come.

SATTERFIELD

We are saddened by the sudden passing of a great son, brother, uncle and friend to many. Doug is survived by his loving brother David, sisters Dawna and Diane, niece Nicole and the apple of his eye his dedicated dog Bogart. Doug is preceded in death by his wife Sandy, nee Amptmeyer (whom he lost on 9/13/21 and never stopped loving and missing), his parents W.L. and Doris Satterfield and his dogs, Duchess, Dobie, Duffy, Dagger and Yogi. A private service was held per his request and a celebration of life is being planned for a future date for family and friends to laugh and share their Doug stories. Doug graduated from Gavit High School class of 1979, where he participated in several athletic programs. It was there that he began playing golf, hockey and softball. Doug kept track of many major sports teams with the Boston Bruins being a favorite. Doug joined the Marine Corps after high school and then got into his restaurant Management career with his last position being a Manager at Doc’s Smokehouse which he enjoyed going to work. Special acknowledgment to Nicole, Diane, Kevin Safin (best friend), Jill and John Hayhurst (best neighbors) for being there each day to support Doug with maintaining life’s every day chores at the house and babysitting Bogart these past few years. There was not an animal that Doug would not feed and protect in the neighborhood between the birds, squirrels and cats he made sure they were fed and no harm done to them. Doug had a big heart and will be missed by many. In Doug’s memory please help any animal in need, however you can.

Pain From Medicare Advantage

On March 28, 2024, I got a phone call from a client who complained about her Medicare Advantage plan. She needs shots or patches to reduce pain that she experiences. She was not getting either currently under her Medicare Advantage plan.

One local hospital stopped accepting payment arrangements from two insurance companies and their Medicare Advantage plans. This client had a Medicare Advantage plan from one of those insurance companies that the hospital no longer accepted.

Medicare plus Medicare supplement plans are accepted by over 97% of medical service firms like doctors, laboratories, and hospitals. But to use a Medicare Advantage plan, a patient must stay in network or pay higher amounts on co-pays, deductibles, and other fees.

A few years ago, a client switched from using Medicare plus a Medicare supplement to using a Medicare Advantage plan. Then, he went into a local hospital. He got a hospital bill of over $6,000 with the Medicare Advantage plan. He asked me to check the

Question: I want to own a home, but the Real estate agent won’t show me homes for sale & the bank guy won’t give me a loan because of my credit score. As a US citizen, I have the right to purchase a home. I have argued my point to these so called real estate people, yet they refuse to listen anymore. Do you know of anyone that can help me?

Answer: Mark Twain said: “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you in trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” Homeownership is the right of every adult in our great Country. But, to do so, we must show financial responsibility.

Instead of ignoring their advice, why don’t you listen to their professional knowledge and start shifting your negative energy to improving your credit score and reducing your debt? A real estate agent wants to sell you a home. A lender wants to give you a loan. That’s how they make a living. But,

bill and help him. I had helped him earlier when he was on Medicare and a Medicare supplement plan. After I checked the bill and the rules of his Medicare Advantage plan, I informed him that I could not help this time and that he did owe the bill under the terms of his Medicare Advantage plan.

Also, this is another reason why seniors should explore options with a local insurance agent or agency and not connect with an insurance agent over the phone. If you’re sitting in an office with someone, it is easier to communicate and the local agent or agency cares about their business reputation in the community so that it is easier to get help if or when you need it.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by correcting medical bill problems. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICAE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

you must follow the prequalification rules & guidelines. If you don’t meet these rules, lenders won’t lend to you and Realtors won’t show you homes. Do you think home sellers want buyers who cannot qualify for a loan walking through their homes? Would you? I don’t think so. So now do you understand?

Take responsibility for your present situation and then listen to these professionals that can be part of your successful team. Follow their advice and soon you will own part of that American Dream!

Secretary Giannoulias Honors Donor

Organ and tissue donor and recipient families were honored at the Illinois State Capitol Building today as part of Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ efforts to raise awareness on the impact of organ donation.

Giannoulias along with state Sen. Christopher Belt (57th Senate District), state Rep. Nabeela Syed (51st House District) and Mid-America Transplant celebrated National Donate Life month and honored donors and their families.

“Organ and tissue donation provides individuals with a sacred second chance at life and brings something beautiful out of tragedy,” Giannoulias said. “I am humbled to be given the opportunity to honor our donors and to share the story of their sacrifice. We owe it to those who have donated and those who are waiting to talk about this issue and increase awareness.”

Illinois has one of the largest registries in the nation, averaging around 20,000 sign-ups per month across DMV facilities with around 6.5 million current registrants. Since the program’s creation, there have been 7.7 million registrations.

“It is truly a privilege to be the stewards of donors’ lifesaving gifts, and to help families create a lasting legacy for their loved one,” said Kevin Lee, president, and CEO at Mid-America Transplant. “This past year, 478 generous donors and families from downstate Illinois made the courageous decision to say yes to donation. Those patients now have a second chance at life, thanks to donor families.”

In 2023, there were 2,259 transplants in the state. Of those who donated and were issued a state ID or driver’s license, 75% were registered organ donors.

“I received a kidney donation after I was living on dialysis for a year and I know first-hand the impact a donor can have,” said Belt. “I am grateful to my donor for every breath I take and that I have a second chance at life.”

Approximately 300 Illinoisans die each year waiting for a transplant, and some 4,000 people remain on the waiting list at any given time.

“I recognize the profound impact of my decision to become an organ donor—it’s the gift of new life. Yet too many people still await this gift,” said Syed. “It is our job to raise awareness of the beauty of donation and encourage more people to register.”

To join the millions of Illinoisans who have already signed up, individuals can visit LifeGoesOn.com, complete the registration card found in the donor brochure, call 800-210-2106 or visit a DMV.

Any Illinoisan with a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID card can become a donor.

Additional activities this month include a statewide organ and tissue donor registration ad campaign highlighting Tonisha Daniel’s story, partnering with planetariums to register potential donors, health fairs, donor registration drives, and visits to high school driver’s education classes throughout the state to educate 15-and 16-year-olds about donation before receiving their driver’s licenses.

Free Learning Opportunities Available and Volunteers

Needed for the SSC Literacy Tutoring Program

(AVL) Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills, whole language experience, combined with effective communication skills. Residents are welcome to volunteer

tutors, learners, and tutoring sites. The following locations have been established as tutoring sites: Acorn Public Library in Oak Forest, Glenwood-Lynwood Library, Harvey Public Library, Phoenix Public

Calumet City Public Library, Grande

South Holland Public Library,

College Main Campus Library in South Holland, South Suburban College Oak Forest Center Library in Oak Forest, Lansing Public Library, Dolton Public Library, Riverdale Public Library, Blue Island Public Library, Dixmoor Public Library, Tinley Park Public Library, Markham Public Library, Midlothian Public Library, and Thornton Public Library. Illiteracy can be debilitating in many ways

for adults who have not received the proper instruction and it can have profound effects on various aspects of their lives. Adults who are unable to read experience difficulty completing many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a disadvantage in today’s competitive job market.

SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

The May training will take place at the South Suburban College Main Campus in South Holland, IL on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 7 through May 23, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This 12-hour program culminates with literacy training certification. Tutors will continue to receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more.
