W

ell, here we are. The launch issue is now a summer memory, and we’re onto the second issue of Magazine -- looking at fall 2015, and all that lies ahead for an unforgettable season!

While the first issue focused heavily on entertaining, and there is surely no fast insight, this issue encompasses lifestyle as a whole, from recipes and entertaining, to health, beauty, fashion, love and overall well-being. Every single feature you’ll find in the pages that follow mean so much to me. Each contributor sharing their passion and knowledge is what fuels me to extend this community with readers. I say this a lot, but who you surround yourself with matters -- I am thankful to have those around who support me, are positive, hardworking, and talented -- it makes this endeavor possible. People can either lift you higher or drag you down -- pay attention, I bet you can pin point those who don’t better you as a person.

Not only has this journey been a tremendous blessing, it’s been a huge learning experience; chasing a passion is no small task and though I continue to tell myself that each issue will get easier to produce in time, I find that hard to believe now, more than ever before. As you set goals for yourself and gradually reach them, you begin to realize just how capable you really are, which in-turn challenges you to only reach higher (it’s inevitable!). The challenge will always be there, and I welcome it openly. That said, you can count on me to continue to evolve each issue to the best of my ability -- passion changes everything. I urge you this season to share your passions with others, thank those who have inspired you, and help those who need it most; we all could use a little extra support from one another, no matter how big or small. readers for continuing to inspire me and for pushing me to reach beyond my Thank you to own goals and expectations; you are my inspiration to pursue my passion, which is to connect with each of you. behind THE SCENES It’s true that some things never change, in this case -- a day of dress up was just what we had in mind when we shot the Friendsgiving feature for this issue. With a rockstar glam team from Blushington, and a rack of clothing from Club Monaco, the whole ‘I have nothing to wear’ bit had a rest, for once. The truth is, no matter the reason you come together, there is something really special about turning up your favorite playlist, plugging in the curling iron and attempting to share one mirror with a bunch of your nearest and dearest ladies.

To capture the fun, we called in photographer and partner in crime, Jodee Debes; minus the large turkey, it hardly felt like anything out of the ordinary!

Laughing until it hurt, saying cheese (quite literally, who doesn’t love cheese -- wait until you see the cheeseboard) one too many times, we wrapped with delicious leftovers, and plenty to take into work the next day! That night, we stayed up until the wee hours, sharing cobbler by the spoonful, and reminiscing over Sncapchat stories. Truly a time to be thankful for!

But, per usual, the hardest part of our day still remained the same -- figuring out what to caption our Instagram photos...

By Alyssa Wasko, Fashion Stylist, Designer & Founder of Donni Charm I think it’s time we admit fall’s superiority -- particularly when it comes to fashion. Layering, plus knits, and endless arrays of outwear make fall the easiest season to look great during (though, as a scarf designer, I may be biased). This particular fall, footwear and accessories are very trend heavy (lucky us!), meaning, there’s no need to heavily invest in too much -- grab a new pair of boots, a scarf or two, a cape, and you’ll be on trend immediately. I’m all about juxtaposition and mixing things together that don’t necessarily fall into the same category. For example, something ultra feminine like lady heels, I’d pair with baggy, cropped, more masculine jeans -- the combo of the two make for a balance that’s dressed up, and dressed down.

Come the first chill (65 degrees will cut it), you’ll undoubtably find me skipping through Washington Square Park en route to work with suede boots on my feet and a cape draped over my shoulders -- even though everyone else might still be in short sleeves!

We Blushington – it’s that simple. Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge has lately been our goto for affordable, professional makeup application as well as brow, lash, and waxing services. Founded

by Stephi Maron (who oh by the way, is merely 25 years old -- talk about an inspiration), this business savvy gal, sought out to fill a void she saw in the beauty world and has since changed the industry. With some of his clients being those most recognizable in the entertainment industry, he has devoted his life to empowering people to be the best versions of themselves. Alessandro has helped us to find clarity on some of our most burning questions from relationships, to career and finances, wellness, and everything in between.

We wanted to open up the floor for some of your questions too. Here, Alessandro is giving his insight on finding our greatest match whether trying a new dating app, or switching up your daily routine -- yep, we’re talking “the one.”

Q:

I’ve been in a few long term relationships that have since ended. I’m okay being on my own and I enjoy dating and meeting new people, but I think I’m ready to meet the one. What is your advice? How do I meet him?

A:

You are among so many that I get this question from. First, I want to preface that the ideal solution is going to be different for every person. Each person has their own set of things they need to learn in this lifetime -- we’ll save this idea for another time. For now, there are a few things that universally will always lead to a better relationship. The answer is complex, so I’ve broken it down into 5 steps to help guide you.

SELF LOVE

Being okay on your own and being happy on your own are two completely different things. The latter is what we should all strive for. Being okay on your own always translates to a piece of your happiness being dependent on another person making you happy. As long as we depend on another for our happiness, they will always, at some point, let us down. It doesn’t matter how amazing and attentive the person is; the system we live in will never allow us to find happiness on the outside to replace a sadness or any other negative emotion on the inside.

So, again I’ll say, nothing on the outside in life can ever bring us true happiness at our core. Really lock this in. Happiness is an inside out job. When you truly feel good about yourself at your core, it feels as though there is nothing that anyone could say that can rock you; it just rolls off your back no matter the situation and there is zero feeling that you need the approval and praise from others. But, when you lack happiness at your core, the world can’t give you enough of what you want or perceive that you need.

So what am I getting at here? Self love, self love, self love. It is the most important thing you need in order to be ready for an amazing relationship. This is one of the most important if not the most important thing you need to have. My students spend months learning and trying to attain this. How you see yourself is how you will be treated by your partner. If you feel like you aren’t fully cooked yet, so will a man. If you don’t make time for you, neither will he. The more you love you, the more he will love you when you meet and thereafter.

GET SPECIFIC

The second thing I find that people are missing in finding their love is being specific on what they want. I always ask, “what are the qualities you want in a partner?” Most people will list off five or ten things. That leaves a lot of unfilled details for these wonderful energies around to have to make a terrible guess at. Even more interesting, people forget to request that their person should be single and available. You wouldn’t believe how many times I have heard people say, “I found the perfect person but, they are married.” Complete clarity on your person is a non-negotiable.

Have you ever tried to buy a gift for someone you really didn’t know or haven’t spoken to in forever? It’s kind of a terrible process. We end up wracking our brains trying to think of a gift that would be great. None of us want to waste our money on something that is going to go in the trash. So, we go to multiple stores and spend multiple hours trying to find the right gift only to end up with something that when we give it, ends up evoking a fake smile and a forced emotion of loving what we got them. The second we are out of sight the person is trying to decide on where they are going to be able to hide this thing or how long they have to keep it to be polite before they get rid of it.

Now, had we known more about what the person liked and what they were interested in, we could have bought them a gift that they would have loved, and we would have found it in so much less time. This is what the universe goes through on a daily basis in trying to fulfill our needs. If you don’t know what your ideal person looks like, how are you going to know when he is right in front of you? Save yourself and the universe a bunch of time and get clear now. *To be clear, I don’t just mean putting a few things down on a list and you have your person. It’s not that simple. You are going to get stuck with someone who you are gonna wish that you spent more time on creating. I see it all the time, so be sure to be thorough on your list of attributes you want in a partner.

CLEAR SPACE

Another important thing to look at is getting rid of all the placeholders in your life. Placeholders are the things occupying the space that your dream person is to fill. Do you have that person who is ok for now until you meet the right person? Is there that person who is your backup plan?

When we get a new place to live, we don’t move in until the old occupant is fully moved out -- too many complications otherwise. The universe operates the same exact way. Can you imagine two men in your life having to cross paths?

Awkward. The universe needs the empty space to fill.

Otherwise, there is no room for the new to fill.

GET ON HIS SCHEDULE

JUMP AND EXPECT TO BE CAUGHT

Hopefully at this point you have a very clear image of what your person looks like. Now get on his schedule!

Chances are the man you want probably isn’t hanging out in a nightclub or destructive environment. Look at his qualities.

Is he spiritual? Does he take care of his body? Does he eat healthy? Is he employed? If you answered yes to to any of these, start frequenting the type of places he himself is very likely to be going to. I’m willing to bet that if this person has his life together he is probably on a great routine and very balanced. He is going to have to do certain things at a certain time of day. Be there when he does. Start hanging out at juice bars. Is he religious? What places might he be at to worship?

And finally, don’t settle because you think time is running out. And be honest with yourself here. Is this person a physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional match? Everyone has a four out of four out there. So many times I see someone settle for a three out of four because they feel like time is running out and that they have no other choice. Jump off the cliff and expect to be caught. No big rewards ever come in life without risking big. This is a process of earning the right to have what you want.

“The best thing you can do for yourself right now is realize the universe never gives us anything that we aren’t ready for. If he isn’t here yet then there is still something that needs to be dealt with before he can come into the picture.

If this weren’t true then he would be here already. Figure out what you need to do to be fully ready for him.”

We think smart, dress smart, eat smart, and exercise smart, so isn’t it true that we should also be dating smart?

With all the dating apps out there nowadays, it’s hard to know which one to use! Well, if you ask us, so far, The League tops them all (go ahead, download and try for yourself). The League offers an exclusive platform to connect with professionals, and taps into your LinkedIn profile, along with Facebook; so far, we’re thinking our matches might just be the cream of the crop! We asked Amanda Bradford, Founder & CEO of The League for some insight on modern day romance, and how to date intelligently. Here’s what she had to say...

Q: A:

It seems like everyone is using dating apps right now. What makes an app different than simply dating online or offline?

Millennials are busy building their empires… dating can sometimes take the backburner!

In large metropolitan cities with a high concentration of young professionals (like SF and NYC), I would say dating apps are now the primary way to meet new people to date. This trend is only going to grow, so if you’re not on board yet, you should be! It’s a so much more efficient and practical way to take control of your dating life. No more complaining that you ‘don’t have single friends’ to go out with. Start scouting on The League!

Meeting someone for the first time can be intimidating, especially if you’re looking for sparks to fly! Any advice on how to step into a first date feeling confident?

Go into each date with lower expectations, and I mean this in the best way possible. Don’t think of these dates as marriage interviews! Think of them as simply an opportunity to meet someone who you wouldn’t have necessarily met otherwise.

I also always try to learn something new on each date.

Whether it’s about a topic that is super important to your date, or an experience they have had that is unique, learn your date’s story -- it’s a great way to connect with him/her even if the sparks aren’t flying. And, you’ll get so intrigued, you’ll forget about feeling nervous.

There is so much to learn about someone new -- family, career, intentions, past relationships. When it comes to personal questions, how much is appropriate to ask on the first date?

Conversely, how much is appropriate to share?

Well I can’t imagine a more boring first date than one only discussing hobbies, the weather and last seasons GOT’s, however there are definitely some topics to steer clear of.

Sharing personal details about yourself is important, but try to avoid talking about your finances, your crazy ex, or any quarter life/identity crisis’. It’s important not to over-share, leaving an air of mystery is a good thing, however you do not want to come off cold. A good rule of thumb is to not talk about online/app dating. Your date most likely does not want to hear about all the other apps you are on or the fact that both you and your roommate matched with them.

Dating apps tend to have this persona that everyone on them just wants to have fun. How do you know if he wants something real?

This is when mobile dating can get a bit ambiguous; you can never be 100% sure if someone is just looking for a casual one night thing. That is why we built a curated community in which each user is personally vetted. We also have no qualms with kicking users out. We are not for one night stands, that’s for sure. But other than that, we are not going to tell people how to use The League. We like to think of it as casual dating with the possibility for more if things go well. We’ve had users date for 6 days, 6 weeks, and 6 months from The League, and a few engagements! It’s going to be dependent on each user’s specific situation and I’m not going to be ‘big brother’ (big momma? lol?) enough to tell singles how they can interact once they meet. As long as they stay respectful, I’m happy.

Sometimes a first date seems to go well, but then he never follows up. Is there anything that should be done on the first date the might better set up a second date?

There is so much unknown in the online dating space (will they respond? will they ask for a date?); that said, when you finally meet up with someone who you would be interested in seeing again, make sure they know that you’ve had a good time. But don’t sweat it if they don’t -- there’s plenty of fish in the sea! I always tell people not to get too attached on the first date, just have fun!

By Kelly Leveque of Be Well By Kelly No matter the season, it’s all about balance and maintaining a lifestyle you’re happy with and proud of; a lifestyle that inspires you to jump out of bed with an optimistic approach to those every day (and sometimes tedious) tasks. Meal planning, and morning meditation/yoga are a couple things that help make staying on track a bit easier for me; here you’ll find a few of my other favorite morning habits that might just inspire you a bit too!

first things first, hydrate!

Drinking water slowly throughout the entire day will allow your body to use nature’s elixir effectively, it’s best to drink it between meals. The recommended intake from the mayo clinic is 9 cups for women (72 oz) and 11 cups for men (88 oz), however, many factors affect hydration so if you workout, drink lots of caffeine or plan to spend your day in the sun, up your intake. The benefits include; detoxification, weight balance, less fatigue, headache prevention, and improved skin health and digestion. Adding herbs, citrus or vegetables can easily flavor water and help encourage you to drink more too!

speaking of water - what’s the green stuff you ask? chlorophyll water.

A chlorophyll dropper is easy to have on hand, so whether at home starting the day or running around town (stash a dropper in your purse), this is one of my go-to necessities. Just adding a few drops of green pigment (responsible for photosynthesis) can help control hunger, cravings and body odor (even that one girly odor we don’t talk about). It is a super potent antioxidant that promotes healing and cleansing, including binding to heavy metals and helping kill off candida.

still a little iffy? let’s start simple. How about lemon water?

Go ahead and ask for a side of lemons. Lemons, although acidic in nature, are alkaline in your body. Warm lemon water first thing the morning, hydrates your body naturally and lemons purify the liver.

Keep carrots, celery and lemons in water; they last longer, stay crisp and are easy to grab when they are prepped and ready.

Prepping produce and keeping it in a produce saver can help keep produce longer, especially when we throw away on average 25% of what we buy.

Berries don’t last too long but a quick rinse and kept in the colander is the way to go.

Asparagus and herbs keep well if kept in a few inches of water like flowers; swap the water and trim the bottoms and they will continue to keep.

Make a homemade dressing for salad, quick marinade and dipping vegetables once a week and throw a blender ball into your dressing container to whisk it up with a little shake.

Nuts keep really well in the cold, keep bulk nuts in the freezer and few you can grab for a snack in the fridge.

MEDITATION It’s no longer just for the yogis, meditation has been proven to increase grey matter in the brain, cortical thickness and brain volume in the areas of emotion regulation, positive emotion and self-control. It lowers high blood pressure and blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks. It increases serotonin production that improves mood and behavior and improves the immune system.

YOGA Yoga has been shown to reduce training induced stress and weight. It increases flexibility, muscle strength and muscle tone all while improving respiration, energy and vitality. It’s a great way to distress and take a mini break from your computer during a workday without getting super sweaty too. Overall, my advice is just get moving; no workout is a bad workout.

t all starts with a spark, a spark that’s fueled by passion. And that passion becomes a vision, which in turn becomes a brand, even before you realize it. Because a brand doesn’t only need to be the commercial you see on TV, the store you drive by everyday, the ad that pops up on your computer screen—the best brands are actually just people following their passions.

As you build a brand, you might get caught up in goals and checkmarks on your to-do list, but you should really be focused on your vision and where it’s going to lead you. Don’t be so driven by an analytical barometer as much as you are driven by your passion for the place you’re headed. This is the key to personal happiness. So, you might ask, how do you discover your passion?

It’s a question that I have not only been asked, but have asked myself many times, and I would answer this question differently now than I did 15 years ago. And I’ll probably answer it differently in another 15 years from now. But for right now, my answer is twofold. One, you have to be willing to experience new things, then take a moment to reflect on what makes you laugh, what makes you happy. Be willing to fail or have a bad experience—this is just as important as all of the motivational experiences you’ll have in life as well. Two, be completely open to the possibilities in front of you and use them to find your own version of success. This might be staying and growing at one job, as I did for the first 13 years of my career, trying different jobs with different companies, or starting your own business.

While there is no formula for success, in my perspective, it is directly related to how approachable and vulnerable you can be. Sometimes you’ll find that the moment you show a side of yourself that is less than polished, will be the moment that someone really connects with you. A business suit and a perfect pair of high heels are much more intimidating and hard to crack, even for me, than someone who is willing to talk about their business and social life over tea or glass of wine. When you allow for a personal connection, you create an emotional tie to your brand that can only lead to success.

“Reflect on what makes you laugh, what makes you happy” Once you’ve established your brand, be open to the fact that your brand will—and should—evolve. And always keep building upon what you’ve become. I started at the front desk of the Claremont Club in the Berkeley Hills, moved into event planning, but found that I didn’t want to work in the food and beverage industry. So I took the skill set I learned from planning events and turned it into a marketing position. And I’ve since turned that marketing position in the hospitality industry into a branding position for luxury brands.

I’m a big proponent of saying yes and then figuring it out. It’s not about knowing everything—because you’ll never know everything—but about having that confidence that you’re smart enough to get there. So always take that opportunity. I think I have said yes more times when I probably should have said no, but I wasn’t willing to let an opportunity pass me up.

And in the same vein, don’t be afraid to answer the question, “What do I want to do with my life?” If you say that you don’t know, I actually think you do and I’d start back at your passion.

Even if it doesn’t easily translate to a job or career, I challenge you to follow that passion. Because it’s what you secretly want to do with your life. It’s what excites you, what motivates you, what makes you geek out, so above all else, just follow that.

The holidays place a greater strain on families in need, and by distributing or donating food, you’ll bring a smile to the face of someone who needs it most. And research says donating 100 hours a year is the magic number to enrich your life. It’s the perfect season to make a difference.

Carve a pumpkin. It’s not just for kids. We know you probably haven’t done this since you were 10, but taking time to engage with the creative side of your brain will only boost your happiness levels this season. Bonus: Reference number 2 and make it a little DIY décor party!

Pick some apples. Or persimmons, or squash, or any other fall produce available at that farm that’s just a day trip away.

It doesn’t matter as long as you get outside—of the city, of your home, of your daily routine—where happiness thrives.

Class starts, and the instructor proceeds to make you feel more accountable for everything you did the night before, like, “hey maybe, I shouldn’t have had that third glass of wine” as you struggle to catch your breath between sets of plyometrics and mountain climbers -- “wait I thought we were friends?!” It’s a necessary tough love relationship to have. That motivator we all need at times to push us to progress and grow.

As an instructor, I’m constantly looking for ways to revamp my classes and one of the great qualities about fall recently inspired me. Fall is my favorite season, it’s sweater weather and time for pumpkin flavored everything, but the return of football season is by far what fuels my love for fall.

Whether you’re an avid football fan like myself or are just looking for a way to jumpstart your fall fitness, I figured there’s no better way to inspire and up your routine this season than by looking to our heroes on the field. In order to craft the perfect, most effective workout I knew I needed to quite literally source some inspiration from the pros.

I reached out to NFL linebacker and Green Bay Packer, Jake Ryan.

Jake was able to clue me in on some of the best warm-ups and drills that the Packers fit into their daily practice. Why are your favorite players the best to turn to for some fitness motivation? Professional coaches and staff develop routines for the players that are highly efficient, by focusing on multiple aspects of physical fitness at once, such as strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. Not only do the workouts accomplish improvements in all these aspects, they are also highly functional and easy to incorporate into your current routine. This quick, 30 minute workout includes a 10 minute warm-up, 18 minutes worth of Tabata interval, strength exercises and approximately a 2 minute cool down and stretch.

I love vintage china, but know nothing about collecting these sorts of things! Any advice on what to look for when starting a personal collection?

A:

For curating your personal collection keep in mind a certain color palette and thickness.

Vintage dish dye lots can greatly vary. Those that have a more ivory-yellow tone are more common and sticking with those will help you to seamlessly mix various patterns and styles as though they were intended to do so. You can stick with similar colors, themes or patterns. As you collect you may find that a specific company or year really speaks to you; I am loving all sorts of dark stoneware lately which is so different than the pieces I first collected. I find that the unique thrift stores and flea markets have better pieces than the chain thrift stores.

Craigslist can be a resource for you, but I mainly recommend that for those that are looking for larger quantities.

I look for unique style and color; it’s really going to be personal to each collector though. Just like with style, don’t do it my way just because -- do what is authentic to you and you will have a collection that brings you joy!

how to incorporate wood and warmth into your space Whether living in an apartment, starter home or your dream home, we’re pretty sure we all can agree -- a beautiful, comfortable space that we can be proud of and enjoy is important to us! Another common ground always seems to be regarding space -- there just never seems to be enough of it (especially if you live in a big city)! Oftentimes we’re challenged to make the most of tiny spaces, and some of the ways we’ve learned to do this is by keeping things simple and light -- but when the season changes and autumn begins, we crave natural elements, warm colors and depth in our nests.

here are some simple tips to keep in mind when bringing in the season Blankets and throws are a great way to bring the autumn feel into your space -- think heaver wool knits and cashmere pieces, similar to sweaters you’ll be wearing during the season. Texture is an important part of layering and will give you that cozy feeling.

Fresh flowers or plants are always a great way to reflect the season outside; for variation, you can bring in branch displays which last a little longer as well.

Avoid too many apple or pumpkin scented candles -- instead, opt for warmer scents with deep wood, leather and musk for a richer scent throughout your space.

Bringing in accessories in fall colors is a great way to incorporate the tones without purchasing larger pieces; pillows, trays and small items easily work right into your space but don’t need to stick around all year long.

Don’t get sucked into buying too much seasonal decor; one or two pumpkins are fine, but don’t over do it, or your space might feel too themed.

We love a city girl who knows her blooms, so tapping into Christy for this floral feature was a no brainer; here’s a look at what’s in season during the fall months.

ANEMONE With their dark centers, these blooms have so much personality and can easily dominate an arrangement or flower crown. If you are looking for an amazing statement flower in the late fall, this is it.

DAFFODIL There is something so cheerful about a bright yellow daffodil in the midst of the late fall and winter temperatures. These are always an instant pick-me-up!

DAHLIA When peony season is over, the dahlia is a great go-to for fuller flower arrangements. Smaller dahlias also look amazing when used as statement flowers in a crown -- but they do tend to wilt easily, so handle with care.

DELPHINIUM There aren’t too many blue flowers out there, so delphiniums are great if you’re looking to incorporate blues and purples; they can range from light powdery blue to vibrant purple.

GLOBE AMARANTH I love to use these vivid pink and purple pom pom flowers in my crowns and arrangements. They don’t wilt easily, so if you are looking to make a flower crown that lasts a few days, these are a great option.

MUMS This fall staple comes in so many pretty colors; I love to shop for the local mums at the New York flower market. Whole Foods also carries a great variety of mum plants for my terrace at home.

ROSEMARY Think twice when you’re in the produce section! You might not think to add rosemary to your seasonal arrangements, but I challenge you to try. Rosemary smells incredible and I not only love cooking with it, but also enjoy weaving it into fall and holiday flower crowns. It dries out nicely so, you can even make crowns of Rosemary as decorative pieces for your kitchen by hanging them upside down during the holiday season.

QUEEN ANNE’S LACE This wildflower is a great alternative to baby’s breath and can serve as a great filler flower in a boho-esque flower crown or arrangement.

SEEDED EUCALYPTUS This may be my favorite greenery to use in general; I absolutely love how the pieces of seeded eucalyptus fall freely and look so whimsical.

TULIP Tulips come in so many beautiful colors and in late fall, it’s so exciting to see these blooms pop up in the New York flower market. With a bundle of tulips, you have an instant flower arrangement -- they look amazing simply placed in a vase alone.

We love spending the day with friends, whether it be at a pumpkin patch or enjoying a festive breakfast. One of our go-to recipes this season is homemade cinnamon pecan pancakes drizzled with maple syrup, honey, and brown sugar, paired with a tart grapefruit juice -- and one of our favorite ways to serve our dish of choice is by creating a breakfast vignette. Whether you have a lot of space to spare, or limited, creating a station with all the goodies in one place is a great way to get guests engaged and chatting in no time!

CONTRAST Think about the way both the colors, flavors, and textures will play off one another. While our design is fairly neutral, we played off the coloring and flavor of the pancakes when choosing our toppings, drink, and backdrop. You don't want a bland looking or tasting breakfast!

VEGAN PANCAKES

Makes about 10 pancakes Total Time: 20 minutes Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons maple syrup, agave, or coconut sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce 1 cup almond, coconut, or hemp seed milk 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (flax meal) 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon salt Coconut oil or vegan butter substitute (Earth Balance) to cook, and serve Fresh fruit, chocolate chips, nuts, real maple syrup, etc. to serve (optional)

How To In a small bowl, whisk together your wet ingredients.

In a larger bowl, whisk together your dry ingredients.

Slowly whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whisking until you have a smooth, lump free batter.

Heat a heavy pan or griddle over medium heat. Add a bit of coconut oil or vegan butter to your pan, and heat until melted.

Using a ¼ cup to scoop, portion out two to three pancakes at a time in your pan, making sure they have enough room to spread and cook. Cook for 1-2 minutes on the first side, until small bubbles form in the batter.

Flip to the other side and cook 1-2 minutes more until golden brown and cooked through (add a minute or two more per side if needed).

To serve, top with vegan butter and a drizzle of real maple syrup, and any other toppings you like.

Note: You can also add toppings to the batter while cooking each pancake. Add a few blueberries, chocolate chips, nuts, or whatever you like to the pancakes before you flip them, while the batter is still wet. mollymy.com

As a contributor for The Everygirl and lifestyle guru, Gillian Ellis always inspires us. We asked her to share some seasonal DIYs and this southern belle brought the goods!

By Gillian Ellis, Contributor at The Everygirl and Photographer Fall decor has a way of always looking the same; there’s usually a lot of burlap, brown and plaid involved. With gold so popular this season (and really, every season), why not create a twist on traditional fall decor by crafting gold leaf pumpkins? These are are a great alternative to carving, or simply painting pumpkins -- and bonus, this DIY is super easy! Use these pumpkins as Halloween decor or incorporate them into seasonal place settings.

1 Begin by cleaning your pumpkins with a damp washcloth. Let them fully dry before applying the adhesive or it will not stick. While you’re waiting for your pumpkins to dry, create a workspace by laying down newspaper. Gold leaf can get a bit messy!

3 Once the glue feels sticky to the touch you can start applying the gold leaf. Take a sheet of gold leaf and gently place over the glue. It is much easier to apply the entire sheet of gold leaf at once rather than in small pieces. If you try to apply in small pieces the gold leaf tends to crumple in on itself and you end up with a messy looking glob.

Gold leaf sheets Adhesive Small bristle brush Small sponge brush Sealer

2 Apply adhesive to your pumpkins by using a sponge brush and painting the areas you would like covered. Let this dry for 1-2 minutes.

The adhesive used for gold leaf is very watery.

By letting it dry for a few minutes it gets a bit tacky, which helps the gold foil stick.

4 Once you are happy with your gold application use the bristle brush to gently apply sealer. Some of the gold leaf will come off at this point… but don’t freak out! That’s part of the charm and “look” of gold leaf.

While your sealer is drying the gold will dull in color but this comes back once everything is completely dry.

Keeping with fall colors copper, orange and jewel tones will look nice.

Depending on how dark the dinosaurs are you may need to apply 2-3 coats of paint.

TREAT In for a

Meet Fatty Sundays, a Brooklyn-based company that makes gourmet, fun-flavored chocolate covered pretzels. Together two sisters, Ali and Lauren, set out to reinvent and modernize their all time favorite sweet and salty treat -- chocolate covered pretzels. Inspired by their Mom’s sprinkle pretzels growing up, Ali and Lauren launched their product line about three years ago (the packaging is so adorable, they make for great gifts and party favors), which also includes gluten-free options. With Halloween being one of our favorite holidays, and entertaining being one of our favorite past-times, we knew we had to get our hands on the DIY for these charming treats!

We used to walk around our neighborhood, going door to door, collecting as much candy as we could carry in our orange plastic pumpkins. Then, we’d get home, sit around the kitchen table with our candy laid out, and organize a trade. Fast forward many years, and we still love this sugar-filled holiday! But, these days, we’re more likely found entreating with friends, and of course, whipping up our signature treats to share.

20 pretzel rods 1 pouch of dark chocolate chips 1 jar of black, orange and purple sprinkles 1 box of Fatty Sundays pretzels (Flavor: Cookies and Cream)

MELT: Melt chips in microwave (in microwave safe bowl) on medium (50% power) for 30 seconds. Microwave at additional 10-15 second intervals, as needed, stirring until chips melt. Don’t add water or overcook.

DIP: Holding a pretzel securely by one end, dip the pretzel into the chocolate.

Use a spoon or spatula to spread the chocolate evenly over the pretzel. Let any excess chocolate drip back into the bowl.

DECORATE: Use a spoon to evenly coat the pretzel with sprinkles and

carefully lay each pretzel on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper. Repeat with the remaining pretzels, chocolate and sprinkles.

COOL: Place the cookie sheet full of chocolate covered pretzels in the

refrigerator for about 15 minutes. Remove the tray when the pretzels are completely chilled.

ENJOY: Eat, enjoy and share your Fatty Sundays chocolate covered pretzels!

Remaining pretzels may be stored in an airtight container or in a plastic bag at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Whether selling clothing, or picking up new/used or vintage finds, Buffalo Exchange has been one of our go-to shops for a while now. With locations in various locations across the country, it’s hard not to pop in time and time again. Halloween costumes, no matter your age, always seem to find their place -- from office work parties to entertaining at home, you’re bound to have a frightful gathering to prep for this season. Though we love getting all dolled up for the occasion, we can’t bare to overspend on items we can’t utilize often, which why thrifting is one of our favorite alternatives to store bought costumes. To help us create some effortless looks for Halloween this year, we checked in with Buffalo Exchange to see what they had on hand -- here’s what we came up with...

The Whirlwind Life of App Entrepreneur,

Nadine Levitt

B

efore setting her sights on the world of mobile app entrepreneurship, Nadine Levitt was a successful lawyer, model, actress, proprietor of her own record label, and mom of two to boot! But although Nadine had accomplished many great things early in her career, when she had the idea for the revolutionary music app, Wurrly, she knew she had to do it.

Part social network and part mobile recording studio, Wurrly gives up-and-coming singers both an outlet and an audience at the same time. The free app allows singers to choose their favorite song from a vast in-app catalog, adjust the key and tempo to fit any style and vocal range, and then share the unique new track both in the app, on social media, or via email or text message.

Wurrly actually started out of a personal need Levitt encountered while performing.

“I got the chance to open for Steven Tyler, Roger Daltry and Christina Perri for a vocal health gala, and was asked to sing a Bon Jovi song as my opening act. As a classically trained opera singer, I was obviously not going to sing Bon Jovi in quite the same way, so I went online to play around with it and see how I would make it my own. I was shocked that I couldn’t find any service that allowed me to take the basic backing track and push it up four or five steps to where I needed it to be.

I ended up having to hire my amazing (but expensive) pianist and I said to him ‘wouldn’t it be nice if there was an app that allowed me to customize a song to suit me, even just in key and tempo, and maybe then I could record and share it from there’ -- that’s where it all started.”

As she began working on the app, she came to realize it filled what she saw as an important gap in the digital marketplace.

“It quickly grew into a much bigger product because I realized this was not just a toolkit for singers, it was really about enabling self-expression through music (the idea being that self-expression through video was captured by YouTube, self-expression through photos was captured by Instagram but true self-expression through music had never been tapped into -- and that’s what Wurrly is all about).”

When it comes to other music apps on the market, Levitt says that what truly sets Wurrly apart is this strong emphasis on self-expression.

“We want our users to truly express themselves. That’s why we offer the customization of songs (by key, tempo and instrumentation), so that men can sing women’s songs and vice versa, and songs can live beyond a given genre (for instance when you take a hip hop song and turn it into an acoustic guitar track it changes it dramatically).”

It’s an ambitious project to say the least, especially for someone with no experience in the world of mobile application design. “I wish I had been a coder” she said, “I knew nothing about app development -- I wouldn’t even call myself particularly tech savvy!” But with Levitt, it seems that no challenge is too daunting and if her background is any indication, she’s no stranger to keeping busy.

A self-described type-A personality, she’s gotten used to juggling multiple careers and taking on new challenges ever since she was waiting tables, modeling and performing at age 13.

She’s still at it today. While building her app and growing her company into a formidable artist discovery platform, Nadine still manages to remain a dedicated mother to her two adorable children, Lucas and Ariella.

“Balancing work and family is tough -I have two kids (2 and 3-year-old), and if I want to be the person to put them to bed most nights it tends to mean that I have to work until 1am to still get the work done. Thank god for coffee!”

When it comes to naming your party, it’s always important to keep the title true to what the details and mood of your event will be -- for example, if you’re hosting a casual dinner party where being sprawled out around the house in a food coma is highly encouraged, the invitation language should communicate a fun, casual vibe. However, if the dinner is going to be more of a formal sit down affair, the invitation should communicate this as well -- for example, you might want to include a tagline on the bottom of the card saying “dress up!” or “formal attire” that way, guests are clued in from the start.

Paper is ALWAYS better. It makes the event stand out, and lets your guests know that this will indeed be a special occasion. We all know that finding a piece of thoughtful mail in the midst of a pile of junk and bills is like discovering a buried treasure. Sending an invitation via post is a wonderful way to make someone feel special, and the bonus is when it comes to replies, you will most-likely have a stellar attendance! If time is not on your side and paper invitations are not an option, customize your electronic version with consideration of details in the design and text (instead of using the stock options available) to make it reflect the personality of your party. *Note, font choices are a hugely important to communicating the mood of a particular event as well. Once assembled with great wording you’ll be sure to get everyone excited and in the holiday spirit. Here at Urbanic we like to keep the text simple and entice guests with a glimpse into highlights of the party. It’s an easy way to set the mood for the festivities.

THE THANK YOU NOTE

THE RSVP CARD Timeliness and detailing proper information in your reply are important etiquette considerations. If you’re a guest, it’s always best to RSVP to a party as soon as possible in consideration for your hosts. Set an alert on your calendar to remind yourself to RSVP or keep the invitation in a visible place as a reminder.

If you are invited to two dinner parties conflicting on the same date, plan to be at one for dinner and the other for dessert and be sure to communicate this to both hosts. If you’re anticipating a scheduling conflict, it’s thoughtful to notify your host in advance rather than postponing your response. Regretful replies don’t require any explanation; in fact, the proper etiquette is to keep them short and sweet.

Writing a quick thank you note to your host/hostess after the event is the BEST way to show your appreciation. It will speak volumes about your social skills and will most-likely make their day! The timeliness of communicating this is key here to keep it meaningful. We always suggest that you send out your thank you notes right away, or within a week of the party while the excitement and highlights of the gathering are still fresh in your mind. If the anticipation of writing a long, emotional note delays getting it done, keep in mind that a short and sweet “thanks” with a blurb about the great time, is all that’s needed to express gratitude.

PLENTIFUL CHEESEBOARD

The yummiest (and some of the most beautiful) cheeseboards are those that overflow with variety -- a seasonal cheeseboard is no different, so don’t be afraid to mix things up and experiment with various goodies!

To present the most eye pleasing display, consider the cheeseboard like a work of art (much like you would a centerpiece). In general, wood or slate are good options for a base; anything that’s easy to cut on is practical. Once you’ve picked your board, get started with the basics.

Here are a few cheese suggestions (various from soft to hard) • • • • •

Brie Gouda Crotonese Parmigiano reggiano Gorgonzola

The best bet for presentation, and entertaining, is to consider cheese in the form of a wedge. Keep in mind, you’ll want to use a different knife for each cheese to keep flavors from mixing too much. If you opt to add meats to your spread, try an array from cured (like salami), to cooked (like pancetta); using a small fork or toothpicks as serving utensils work well for meats.

When using a cheeseboard as an appetizer, typically, you’ll want to buy slightly less than you would if it were the main attraction (i.e. like at a cocktail party); a good rule of thumb is two ounces of cheese and three to four slices of meat per person.

When it comes to breads and crackers, think about the cheeses you’ve selected and use that to help guide you; overall, you’ll just want a good variation of texture, you really can’t go wrong! If you’re still unsure (or just indecisive!) simply opt for crusty bread and plain crackers -- always a crowd pleaser!

Once you have your base (cheese, bread/crackers, necessary utensils and the proper board), start adding the extras! In this case, figs, mixed nuts (salted, candied, etc.), various dried fruit, olives, marmalade, honey and seasonal texture (i.e. seeded eucalyptus -- not for eating, just for looks!) to make it extra special and festive. You’ll want to give each extra it’s own little section; you’ll want to make it easy for guests to pick what they prefer to nibble on, and you don’t want the cheeseboard looking too overwhelming, or messy!

When preparing your plentiful cheeseboard, plan to give yourself good amount of time to construct it; cheese should be at room temperature before serving.

MICRO-GREENS RADISH SALAD

Serves: 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

1/4 cup roasted pepita seeds 2 tbs. olive oil (more, or less if desired) 2 tbs. apple cider vinegar 1/2 pound radishes, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons finely chopped mixed herbs, such as parsley, snipped chives, dill fronds, basil, and chervil leaves 2 cups mixed micro-greens, such as pea tendrils or arugula Sea salt, to taste Freshly ground black pepper Pumpkin seed oil (optional)

How To In a medium bowl, whisk together oil and vinegar with a pinch of salt; set aside -- in a separate large bowl, combined sliced radishes; pour vinaigrette into the large bowl, tossing until radishes are evenly coated with dressing.

1 small head of purple cabbage (about 8 cups) 1 head of white cauliflower (about 10 cups) 16 oz. low sodium (or regular, depending or preference) vegetable broth or chicken broth 2 tbs. olive oil 4 coves of crushed fresh garlic (less or more, based on preference) 1 tsp. sea salt (less or more, based on preference) 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary (as is) Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

How To To prep, chop cabbage and cauliflower; in a large sauce pan bring broth to boil, add chopped cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, sprigs of rosemary and let simmer on medium heat until veggies are tender (about 45 minutes). Remove from heat, and let cool. Remove sprigs of rosemary; then, gradually transfer all remaining ingridents inro a high speed blender -- add oil and salt. Blend until smooth (texture should be soup-like, slightly thick).

To serve, top individual bowls off with extra fresh sprigs of rosemary, additional sea salt and pepper, and pepita seeds and/or hemp seeds.

STUFFED MILLET ACORN SQUASH

Serves: 4 Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

2 medium acorn squash 2 tbs. olive oil 2 cups cooked millet 1 medium yellow onion, diced 1/2 pound button, or shiitake mushrooms 1 tablespoon fresh sage leaves 1/2 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 2 ounces grated pecorino cheese Pinch of sea salt, or more to taste

How To To start, slice the squash in half lengthwise and discard seeds. Place both halves cut side down and roast in the oven at 375 degrees F. until tender, about 35 minutes. In a skillet, sauté diced onions in olive oil until translucent. Add the mushrooms, herbs and salt; continue to cook, stirring often until the mushrooms are tender, about 10 minutes. Once the squash is fully cooked (should be tender), remove from the oven and let cool; scrape out some of the inside of the squash, leaving a half-inch boarder all around. In a large bowl combine the cooked millet, reserved squash, and mushroom mixture. Set aside. Re-stuff the squash halves with the mixture.

Top with pecorino and bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and the filling is heated through, about 10 minutes; garnish with additional cheese if desired.

1 1/2 pounds fresh brussels sprouts (washed well), ends trimmed and cut into halves 3 tbs. olive oil (or mild coconut oil) 1 tsp. sea salt (more or less, based on preference) 4 cloves of crushed fresh garlic (more or less, based on preference) 2 sprigs of minced fresh rosemary

Note You can play around with the seasonings/herbs, this recipe is super adaptable, which is why I love it so much!

How To Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.; place trimmed brussels sprouts, oil, salt, garlic and rosemary in a large bowl and mix to coat thoroughly. Then, spread coated brussels sprouts on a baking sheet with a nonstick baking mat, and place on the top rack. Roast in the oven for about 45 minutes, shaking the baking sheet every so often for even browning; remove from the oven once brussels sprouts are tender, and golden brown-- if desired, for extra crisp sprouts, place oven on broil for a few short minutes until excess browning occurs (watch with the oven light on to avoid burning!).

Top with extra sprigs of fresh rosemary for garnish, add additional seasoning to taste, if necessary.

Then, spread coated potatoes on a baking sheet with a nonstick baking mat, and place on the top rack. Roast in the oven for about 50 minutes, mixing every few minutes to insure even browning; remove from the oven once potatoes are golden brown -- you can also broil these for a few short minutes for extra crispness (but, as noted for my brussels sprouts recipe, be sure to keep your eye on them so they don't burn!).

HOW-TO ROAST A THANKSGIVING TURKEY

step 1:

Prep! 30 minutes prior to roasting, take the turkey out of the ridge; remove any packaging and the bag of giblets (check body and next cavity). Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.; rinse turkey well and pat dry with clean paper towels.

step 2: Sit turkey breast side up in a roasting pan, about

2 inches deep; brush with oil of choice, and add light seasonings (salt, pepper, etc.).

step 5: check the turkey's temperature about half way

through the roasting process, and baste every 45 minutes or so (baster the pan liquids and drizzle on top of the turkey) -- check the temp in three different places, breast, outer thigh, and inner thigh; in all areas, the meat should be no less than 165 degrees F. to be completely cooked.

Fun fact: basting cools the surface of the turkey, which helps keep the breast meat cooking around the same rate as the legs and thighs.

step 6: in the last 45-30 minutes of roasting, you can

baste the turkey with oil of your choice, or butter -- this will crisp up the skin for that golden brown, flawless look!

PEAR COBBLER CRUMBLE Serves: 8 Ingredients Topping:

1/2 cup fresh apple juice 1 tbs. fresh lemon juice 1 tbs. arrowroot powder 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cardamom 5 large pears of various colors, peeled, cored and chopped

2 cups blanched almond flour 1/2 tsp. sea salt 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp ground cardamom 1/4 cup grapeseed oil 1/4 cup honey 1 tbs. pure vanilla extract

How To Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.; set aside 8 ramekin dishes. To make the filling, whisk the apple juice, lemon juice, cardamom, arrowroot powder and nutmeg in a medium size bowl -- add chopped pears into the mixture and coat well, then transfer into individual ramekin dishes. To make the topping, combine almond flour, salt, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg in a large bowl; in a separate bowl, mix together grapeseed oil, coconut nectar and vanilla extract -- stir wet ingredients into the dry until crumbly. Sprinkle the topping mixture over the filling mixture. Cover each bowl dish with foil and bake for about 30 minutes, remove foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until top is golden brown and slightly crisp.

Remove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes, serve warm.

APPLE PIE COOKIES Makes about 10-12 mini pies Total Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour (or gluten free baking flour) ½ cup whole wheat flour (or gluten free baking flour) 2 tablespoons coconut sugar ½ teaspoon kosher salt 1/3 cup cold vegan butter (try organic Earth Balance), cubed 6 tablespoons vegan shortening (try organic Earth Balance), cubed ½ cup + 3 tablespoons ice water ½ cup coconut sugar 3 granny smith or gala apples, peeled and minced ¼ cup plus one tablespoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

How To Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bow, combine the flour, 2 tablespoons coconut sugar, and salt. Using a pastry cutter or two butter knives, work the butter and shortening into the dry ingredients until the butter is the size of peas. Drizzle over the ice water slowly, and continue working the dough until it sticks together when you press it with your fingers. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

While your dough is chilling, prepare the filling. In a large mixing bowl, combine the coconut sugar, apples, cornstarch, cinnamon, vanilla, salt, and lemon juice and mix thoroughly. Set aside.

Place your chilled dough between two large sheets of parchment paper.

Roll the dough between the parchment into a roughly 12 inch round circle, with about ¼ inch thickness.

Remove the top sheet of parchment, and then spread the filling in an even layer over the dough. Then use the remaining dough to create a lattice top over the filling. Use a ring mold or small glass to cut the circles out of the dough, being careful to keep the layers even. Dip your cutter into flower if needed to help this process along.

If desired, brush each lattice top with a bit of melted vegan butter (try Earth Balance), and sprinkle with a bit of coconut sugar.

Bake your pies for 25-35 minutes, until bubbling and golden brown.

Enjoy warm with a scoop of vegan vanilla ice cream if desired.

mini vegan chocolate MARSHMALLOW TARTS Makes about 12 tarts Total Time: 45 minutes Ingredients •

• • • • •

1¼ cups graham cracker crumbs, finely ground in a food processor (about 1 sleeve- use gluten free and or/low sugar as needed) ¼ cup vegan butter (try Earth Balance), melted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 pinch sea salt 12 vegan (or regular) marshmallows 12 oz. dark chocolate

How To In a bowl, combine the crumbs, butter, vanilla, and salt, and mix until well combined. Divide the crust between 12 mini cupcake tins greased with a bit of butter. Use the bottom of a narrow glass to press the crust and pack it tightly. Put the crusts in the freezer, and allow to set for 15-20 minutes until firm.

In a double boiler (or the microwave), slowly melt the chocolate until smooth. Working one at a time, spoon a teaspoon of melted chocolate into one crust, then quickly dip the top of one marshmallow into the chocolate, and set it chocolate side up in the crust.

Continue until all your crusts are filled, then return them all to the freeze to set for 10 minutes. If not using immediately, store the tarts in the fridge.

When ready to enjoy, carefully remove each tart from the pan.

How To Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bow, combine the flour and salt. In a small mixing bowl, combine the vegetable oil and ice water, and whisk together until combined.

Slowly stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients with a fork, forming the dough into a ball (dough will be moist). Wrap the dough in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

While your dough is chilling, prepare the filling. In a large mixing bowl, combine the coconut sugar, cherries, apples, cornstarch, cinnamon, vanilla, salt, and lemon juice and mix thoroughly.

Set aside.

Place your chilled dough between two large sheets of parchment paper. Roll the dough between the parchment into a roughly 12 inch round circle, with about ¼ inch thickness.

CIDER (BOURBON OPTIONAL) Serves: 4-6 Total Time: 10 minutes Ingredients • • • • • • •

2 quarts apple cider 2-3 tablespoons packed brown sugar, to taste (can substitute maple syrup or honey if desired) 1/8 tsp. ground ginger, or a 1 inch piece of fresh ginger, diced 1 orange (unpeeled), quartered 1 tsp. whole cloves 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, or ½ vanilla bean, split Brandy or bourbon (optional)

How To Combine cider, sugar, ginger, orange, cinnamon, cloves, and vanilla in a large pot with a lid.

Bring everything to a boil, and then lower to a simmer for 30 minutes to an hour.

When you’re ready to serve, add a shot of brandy or bourbon to each mug, then fill to the brim with the hot cider (avoiding the oranges and spices).

Stir to combine, and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Enjoy hot or cold.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES Ingredients •

8 tablespoons Earth Balance

•

3/4 cup coconut sugar

•

1 tablespoon maple syrup

•

1 flax egg: (1 tablespoon ground flax mixed with 3 tablespoons cold water)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

•

¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

•

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

•

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

•

1 cup oats, finely processed in a Vitamix or food processor until the consistency of flour

•

1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Almond Flour

•

1/2 vegan cup dark chocolate chips

•

Flake sea salt (like Maldon) for sprinkling (optional)

How To Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Using a standing or handheld mixer with the paddle attachment, beat the Earth Balance, sugar, and maple syrup for 1-2 minutes, then add the flax egg and vanilla, and beat for another 1-2 minutes until thick and creamy. Add the remaining dry ingredients, and beat until well combined, but don’t over mix!

Fold in the chocolate chips, and use wet hands form the dough into rough balls. Don’t flatten them or make them too smooth - the texture makes the cookies better.

Space the cookies about 1 inch apart on your baking sheets, and sprinkle with a bit of Maldon salt if using.

Bake for 8-11 minutes, depending on the texture you want. Bake less for a chewier cookie, and more for a crisper one. Keep in mind the cookies will firm up as they cool, so you can stop cooking them when they’re just set. The cookies will also crisp up more overnight (if they last that long!).

Founder of LOLO Magazine and author of Still LOLO and Your Beautiful Heart, Lauren Scruggs Kennedy is a fashion journalist, blogger and an inspiration, to say the least.

This California girl (originally from Dallas) goes above and beyond to give back to those who need it most, and looks amazingly styled along the way! She started the Lauren Scruggs Kennedy Foundation, with the mission to provide beautiful prostheses, and to empower women to always feel confident in their skin. We asked Lauren about her new foundation and motivation to to create it; read below for our interview with the leading lady herself, and how you too can get involved.

Tell us about your motivation to start The Lauren Scruggs Kennedy Foundation?

After my accident, I was in the rare situation of my insurance covering the entire cost of my prosthetic arms. I thought this was typical until I started meeting precious girls who either heavily disliked their fake looking prosthesis, could not get one because of the high cost, or was unaware of where to go to receive a beautiful customized prosthesis. I developed a huge burden after hearing so many stories, especially after knowing the wholeness and healing my arms brought me. Soon after, I partnered up with a wonderful mentor of mine who has a similar story and an identical vision!

What are your plans / goals for the foundation?

We want to bring hope, restore dignity, and ignite faith in young women with limb loss by providing beautiful prostheses. I am so excited to build relationships with these women and stand alongside them in their journey.

What did it take for you to make your vision a reality?

A clear vision, prayer, people who donated their guidance and knowledge in the specific field, research, help and support from my amazing prosthetist, and the NCF Foundation taking us under their wing.

What has been the most rewarding aspect so far?

We are not yet fully launched as we are currently in the process of organizing the specific content for our website, but we did start a little early and provided an arm to Reyna, a precious girl who attended the retreat Bethany Hamilton and I host every year for girls with limb loss. Seeing how immediately whole she felt was so humbling, and her gratefulness was life changing to see! It’s amazing how something so “small” can be an integral part of feeling beautifully complete again.

How has your support network of friends and family played a role in the development of the foundation?

They have been so wonderful in encouraging me to move forward in something that seemed too big to undertake.

How can we get involved?

Telling people about the foundation would mean so much to us, and donations are major! Every bit makes a huge difference. The money someone gives contributes to such life-giving restoration in a woman’s life. You can donate, here, and our website will be launched in the next few months!
