VIRTUAL SECOND NIGHT Hello dear readers, As we enter in 2016, we're all interested in the new innovations Linden Labs announced for this year. As many of you already know, Linden Lab is building the “YouTube for virtual reality” , code-named Project Sansar. Linden CEO Ebbe Altberg affirms "Much like YouTube, Sansar will empower people to create, share, and profit from their own social virtual experiences. Virtual experiences created with Project Sansar aren’t limited to just captures or representations of the physical world,” he says. “Users can also create interactive environments and experiences that would otherwise be impossible in the real world.” Project Sansar seems to became completely separate from Second Life and it will run in parallel with it. But, Altberg says that the same mesh files and other assets imported to Second Life can also be imported to Project Sansar. So, we have just to wait to see what happens! In this number of VSN you will find inside the magazine, images and suggestions related to the winter season. Add, then, some news about art, journeys, fashion and the that's it!

Gacha hunter Writer and photographer Mafalda Diesel

I

n this new January issue I want to present to all our followers a lucky person. Do you want to know why he is lucky? Because he's a gacha hunter, a new "business" in Second Life to find rare gacha prizes of the most beautiful stores of our virtual world. Kindly he granted us an interview about his secrets to be on top.

26 | VSN - Issue 45 - January 2016

28 | VSN - Issue 45 - January 2016

Q: What gave you the idea for this kind of business? A: This idea was born because of I've always been lucky with gacha and I put on sale what I won starting to gain. This made me try to focus on very famous brand to sell rares and sought after awards also commons prizes. Q: Do you think it could become a new trend or a real employment under SL? A: The gacha are not just a trend, because they are in SL for many years and thay also become a drug for many people [He laughs]. It's an occupation but there are several points: the important events are always at the same time or in the same week, so you have to choose what to focus primarily and in any case is always a game of chance and investment. You can invest little Lindens and gain a lot as well as the other way and if you don't have with you the luck you need also not overcharged nothing. Q: Is there a clear or is it just luck? Or serve both: strategy and luck? 3) Both. Luck is the factor "x", it's what determines everything, the method is to point the gacha you know that virtually everyone wants at the time of opening of the event. There are many "safe brands" because everyone wants something from those stores, this

leads many people to make hundreds of attempts on the same gacha, and of course enough to know when to play and have a good chance of winning the rare. For example at the last Epiphany, I found the Zenith's rare and I was able to immediately find a buyer, but the same award after about four hours had already been written down by a good 30%. The method is mainly the timing to be able to enter to the event as soon as possible by addressing the lag and know of what gacha point, I never want to stay over the three brands that interest me. I mainly on female accessories, alternative constructions of high quality. What do you need is a little knowledge of female's universe and you're done. [He laughs again] You must also keep in mind how much to invest in proportion to how much you want to earn, you must always aim to balance! Q: For those who want to jump into this business on which brand you recommend to invest? A: If you want to start to join into this business I suggest you to focus on women's clothes and accessories such as Zenith, Pixicat, Aisling and Praise, Minimal. And for furnitures or constructions you need absolutely to invest in RO, DRD and Ionic. I'm also looking forward for NC Design's gachas, as to some rumors says there will be soon some gachas! I can only wish good luck to all gacha hunters and all those who want to try their hand at this lucky business.

oslin Petion is the creative force behind Luxuria, the luxury lingerie brand that also offers makeup and other beauty essentials that can be applied to mesh bodies and heads. Petion may be familiar to fashionistas from her former brands 5th & Oxford, Fleur, Tete a Pied, and Savile Row. Even before the coming of mesh, she focused on lingerie, a long obsession that has survived more than one brand name. She joined Second Life® more than ten years ago and those early days are lost in the haze of time, but she certainly remembers experiencing the learning curve—more than once since she took a hiatus for school and had to learn to adapt to the primacy of mesh when she returned. Because she never viewed SL® as a game, she did not mind the effort of learning the ropes. She had read about it before she joined and knew what to expect. “It was unlike anything else out there and I was excited about the potential of the platform,” she said. One of the most exciting things she has done in her career as a creator was creating a Matt Lauer avatar with her former business partner CJ Carnot. Not only was it thrilling for her to see her work on The Today Show, but she also got to share something she did in SL with her family in a meaningful way. We all know how hard it can be to explain 40 | VSN - Issue 45 - January 2016

42 | VSN - Issue 45 - January 2016

our second lives, but she got to share it very directly with her family. It should be very clear that Petion makes lingerie, not underwear. When it looks this good, you do not want to wear it under anything. That sense of luxury informed her choice to name her store Luxuria. With her first life expertise in marketing and brand development, she spent time on research, looking up keywords related to her brand concept—the kinds of attributes she wanted people to think of when they thought of her creations. “I chose Luxuria as a brand name because it’s meaning relates to indulgence and luxury and it is also latin for the sin of lust.” She draws on books on textiles and fashion history and browsing Pinterest and Tumblr. She sometimes asks people to share ideas of lingerie they would like to see. Whatever her original inspiration, her hand drawn original creations only contain some of the DNA of the original, they are not clones. She explains, “I am not a slave to current trends, but I do make an effort to keep in mind what is on trend and adapt my inspiration items accordingly. I also make sure that I offer at least some of my items in colors which follow the Pantone color report for the season.” Continuing, she said, “I try to appeal to as broad a consumer base as possible with Luxuria. What all my customers have in common

is an appreciation for attention to detail and lingerie that is sexy in a classy, upscale way.” For her, the positive feedback from her customers is the most rewarding thing about being a creator in SL. So, does her first life lingerie resemble what she produces in her Second Life? Surprisingly, she says not so, “When it comes to lingerie, I often create items I personally wouldn’t wear in SL or RL. Luxuria’s lingerie tends to be a bit more eclectic and modern than my personal style. My makeups and tattoos, however, are much more closely aligned with my personal style.” Of course, the life of a Second Life creator also has its challenges, for her, the most challenging aspect of being a creator in Second Life is keeping up with technological advances while trying to remain productive with her business. Like all creators, she has been a victim of Intellectual Property theft more than once. She wishes Linden Lab™ would do a better job of controlling alt accounts, for example, linking alts to the main account that is associated with a verified credit card or real life identification. “A lot of theft I see occurring relies on people constantly creating alts to both promote with as well as make sales. If you can trace an alt to a main account, you limit the opportunities they would have to hide from LL and appropriate authorities.”

46 | VSN - Issue 45 - January 2016

Second Life has had a profound effect on her first life, motivating her to pursue her M.A. in professional communication. It also fulfills her need for a creative outlet. She is teaching herself mesh and is looking forward to mastering the skills. This is an important goal for her as she explains, “when I finally master mesh making, I hope to be able to use SL to earn an income so I can have children I can raise while working from home.” Asked if she had any final words for readers, she replied, “I can’t speak for all content creators, but I personally love it when people reach out to me to discuss my designs. Compliments are always appreciated, but I am also open to constructive feedback and suggestions. Just please try to be specific and convey feedback in a sensitive manner. Just remember, while I love to create, I’m creating as much for my customers as I am for myself, so don’t be shy!” As if anyone could be shy when luxuriating in such lingerie.
