VIRTUAL SECOND NIGHT

T

But our outrage does not stop with the facts of Paris , ours is a condemnation of all acts of violence committed in the name of religion , whatever it is, against racism and hatred between peoples. To take a breath from the real world and get back in our imaginary world we selected for you, as always, events and places to visit. Also in Second life it's winter and we have found some beautiful places and took some pictures, we hope you enjoy this number!

his month we want to talk a bit about reality . Sometimes you can not take refuge in a virtual world when around us events happen so serious. Although ours is a small magazine about a virtual world , as journalists we feel affected by the events of 7th, January 2015 massacre in which twelve Stay tuned! people were killed at the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo, in Paris We support freedom of speech and freedom of the press. We can understand that the cartoons of Charlie Hebdo may have bumped the sensibility of Muslims but nothing justifies the murders . The ways to get justice are possible in all Occidental civil jurisdictions and recourse to Justice is the only way to preserve the peaceful coexistence between humans . For this reason our avatars abandoned their usal dresses and worn these simple t – shirts in condemnation of the atrocities.

Utherverse renewed with Oculus Rift Mondivirtuali Writer Lukemary Slade

I

t’s been nine months since Facebook bought for 2 billion dollars Oculus Rift, making Parlmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe two of the youngest multi-millionaires in history. If immediately the move was seen as an attempt of Mark Zuckerberg to invest, in time, in the “next big thing” that could revolutionize the gaming industry (an activity that is increasingly important even for Facebook and social networks in general), so far the expectations related to the potential impact of the virtual world of a mass development of 3D devices related platforms for children and young people as Minecraft, Imvu or Second Life.

Utherverse logo blackNow, however, as reported also by VentureBeat also appear to be no developments regarding platforms aimed at an adult audience as Utherverse, which in recent days has announced that soon his 3D virtual world, Red Light Center (Rlc) will run on the platform of virtual reality of Oculus Rift. In Rlc as you know users can simulate “hot” sessions even more than in Second Life and generally spend time with all kinds of fun for adults, an experience that now with the technology of Oculus Rift promises to be much more “immersiv” and “realistic” than has so far been connecting in a network with a platform that although developed in 3D graphics

Virtual Seond night - Issue 33 - December 2014 |

is effectively filtered by the two-dimensional screen of devices such as Pcs, tablets or smartphones. Or at least that is what promises the number one of Utherverse, Brian Shuster (the past “pop-up prince” of which we already talked to you at Halloween) in his interview for VentureBeat. Luke UtherverseThe new 2.0 release for Pc of Utherverse should debut on the platform of virtual reality of Oculus Rift by the end of the month, as announced at the Adult Video News (Avn) conference of Las Vegas last week, enhancing the appeal of the world’s Shuster that in its first ten years of life (it was launched in 2004), for VentureBeat, recorded 12.5 million registered users in the US and also through its network of franchisees in the rest of the world, for a total of 25 million registered users to date.

Numbers that disagree those stated previously by the same Shuster (who had spoken of 50 million users as a total) but remain an interesting starting point to try the true “mass market” appeal of Oculus Rift as well as a first potential test to assess the possibility of a revival of the entire field of immersive virtual worlds. Again according to Shuster it will “a spectacular market for virtual reality” and a potential gold mine for Utherverse. Personally I am a little more skeptical, being the “gold rush” time largely behind the shoulders in Second Life and beyond.

SL2 users will come from Blocksworld Mondivirtuali Writer Lukemary Slade

L

inden Lab discovered a second Second Life, but it is not (yet) the “SL 2” of which everyone is talking about so much in these latest months but that will still take a year or two before to actually see the light. While waiting for the new generation of virtual worlds appear on the market Ebbe Altberg, Linden Lab Cep, in an interview on VentureBeat explained that Blocksworld (virtual world for kids in Minecraft style of which Mondivirtuali already spoken) was the only one to be retained in the product portfolio of the company together with the same Second Life because has “the traction, the talent and the resources to really walk

While regarding Second Life the idea seems to be that of a technological evolution that now seems inevitable in light of the new technologies that are being developed as Oculus Rift (as well as to improve the performance of a platform now 11 years old), regarding Blocksworld the news may be of wider. Altberg explained to be “excited” about “the user experience, the ease of creation, the audience to which it refers, much younger than that of Second Life”, but mainly because despite being a game just for iPad, just in English and essentially designed only for the US market, without particular marketing expenses, still in the early stages of development, “kids love it” so

Virtual Seond night - Issue 33 - December 2014 |

so much that monthly active users are already about 400 thousands versus “just South the million” for Second Life (for New World Notes they would be little more than 600 thousand, LmS). Stellar Sunshine first registerd users of Second LifeThe two softwares are very similar, remember Altberg, since in both cases you have a content users generated platform for which it is likely to expect over the years a transfer of users from Blocksworld (where the age of subscribers ranges from 7 to 17 years) the new release of Second Life. Which seems to reduce the fears that had been expressed by more than a content cre-

ator about the possibility that fans of the “old” Second Life did not have sufficient incentives to transfer their experiences of users from platform to platform and, given also that, as the same Alberg again confirmed, Second Life remains “profitable” for Linden Lab, would end with abort the take-off of the new platform.

uring this days we all listenend and saw about Charlie Hebdo. An unrepeatable tragedy, a dark moment of our present, because we all believe that freedom of press and speech is a natural rights. All the world is wondering why there are such violence, but no one can give the answer. Anyone who loves the freedom of expression can understand what was the pain of this action and together we must remember to not give in to fear and fight in order to spread our thoughts.

However the virtual city hides a secret world and with courage you can explore the famous Catacombs. In a surreal and peaceful atmosphere you can visit this magnificent European city so that we should never forget what it has had to suffer and we support the courage to get to his feet with the same pride as before.

Shopping is a good time when free.

The easy way to find freebies,

hunts and more.

T

he attractions of Second Life are a lot and some still to be discovered, but it's already known that the favorites destinations occasionally reveal fairs and events dedicated to shopping, recently with all the fairs in the course certainly many people would like to buy everything. However in addition to wild shopping there is another category, shopping for freebie.

65

66 | Virtual Second night - Issue 33 - December 2014

I

t's always a pleasure to find something free and cheap like that and maybe sought for a long time, but how do you find them? The easiest way is to subscribe to the group of some shop and wait patiently for the release of gifts or to expand the possibilities there are other ways, among them there is the popular Flickr. Already everyone for fun, bloggers or merchants of SL use it for showing their photos and probably for that there is a well-known group "Fabulously Free in SL", but with it many others who with the help of users show objects free or low price. It'a great help for all users who don't want to spend too much and there is even the group in world, of course free, which is constantly updated with new notices of sales, gifts and some hunts. This group is certainly recommended to find objects free, but if you want to look more deeply then exists a site, "Hunts SL" which collects all the hunts that ongoing and what will be in the coming months. A list of hunts. Nothing is missing, the name of the hunt, the date start and the end, the theme, the cost if isn't free, even the site, the start location and the name of the person to contact if you have problems with the related hunt. What could you want more? More than that there are only the hated and loved lucky letters, but what can I say except to be patient and wait for your letter? Not much more effectively, but it's also a way to get free items, and if you don't know the places where to find them the best way is to consult the Flickr groups dedicated to free stuff. Even for Midnight groups for free can be a valuable aid to extend the inventory with many new objects at low cost. In the end even if you do't have infinite resources there is always a way to find something nice, certainly there will be more to serch especially if it's hunts, but it's also a way to pass a good time on SL and maybe to know some new store or make new friends. Shopping is always fun and satisfying, but a friend is a treasure.

uring a visit to an art exhibition in a famous and very appraised italian land AEL Arteland, I came across an elevator; and so far nothing surprising. The nice surprise, that prompted me to write this piece, was to find at "the second floorof staging artistic, works of young boys of middle school Italian; a school is Istituto Comprensivo "Gianni Rodari" at Rossano Veneto

105

I got information and in the following days I was able to chat with Corennia, Professor of Art that, in reality, along with other colleagues, oversaw this project. What was the reason, desire or else that motivated you to design an exhibition of pictures of real children of whom you are Professor of Art?

he project was born from the idea of prof. Giovanni Mayer, and teacher music and project coordinator of educational experimentation for the use of Information Technologies and Communication said "Digital Class". The idea of the exhibition was born from the desire to experiment and use a place that to me, alien to the virtual world, it seemed interesting, versatile and open to new possibilities. I have often raised the problem of teaching and educational needs of "showcase", not only among the school walls, the knowledge and skills of the kids, not so much to show their skill, but to become aware of the potential and capacity each of them possesses. Those exposed are not the work of the "most talented", but work "pupils", even those in other subjects fail to achieve satisfying results, and then get frustrated and discouraged. In this way, and when they could prove themselves to count for something, to be "considered" and thus to improve the self-esteem. For those who are aware of their attitudes and artistic leanings was an opportunity to put in evidence.

I know that this exhibition was opened long ago. I'd like to know what was the interest in this regard in the virtual world, in the real world and if you think there will be a "second" time.

The interest from the audience of the virtual world there was so much that some paintings were sold. Some visitors showed confusion and doubt, given the performance, on the fact that the works on display were produced by boys of thirteen, to the great satisfaction of the authors. Monitored and coordinated by prof. Mayer, the guys have had the chance to meet and chat in real time with artists and performers of Second Life, to learn about their work and the reasons that led them to create and experiment in virtual worlds, to converse and socialize their impressions and ideas . Some of these artists have accepted with great enthusiasm to meet the guys in Second Life and share their experience and work with them, as Nino Vichan (USA) who realized virtual composition of Shakespeare's Hamlet, used as a backdrop "bright" in a play "real", in English, the pupils of the second class, which has been highly successful. When you talked to them, how did they The layout of the City of Futurist Myhns react? They were "new" to this experiMayo (IT), George Mayo (IT) and Ville ence, or already knew the metaverse? Valo Philbin Nicolai (IT), has allowed the boys to confront the 3D works Much of the guys were new to the world inspired Fortunato Depero and Tullio of Second Life, and this experience, and Crali. As well as the installation "Sun we are amazed exposure, incredulous and Moon" by Nexuno Thespian (IT) that their jobs could "assert", as to be and the "works" of wearable SaveMe Oh exposed to the public, even if in a virwere of particular involvement of the tual world. boys.

There will be other experiences in the near future, one in particular linked to the language of architecture of Andrea Palladio, as in our area has built some of his most beautiful villas. In collaboration with other colleagues is an ongoing learning process of programming languages through the experience of "Code Hour", which will lead the students to realize their "script" to make "live" their virtual environment, and to make them aware that the language of logic and "mathematics" are another way of representing the world. In thanking Correnia I realize, once again, of how "educationally" you can dare and achieve in this world ... and I leave to you the "delivery" to go for a ride in that place and to be there at the next inauguration.

ast October 18 was unveiled City Bhavana Ashram , I'm back to talk with Chraeloos about; in Sl are not many Ashrams or similar places, for what reason did you decide to found a new one? -It was a group effort between Swami Luminos, Szavanna, Rhiannon Dragoone and myself. We felt the desire to have an environment unique to SL that is inspired by RL ashrams in the sense that we are here to support spiritual and philosophical growth both short-term and long-term, depending on the individual interest. We all come from various different traditions and communities within SL and RL and felt that it would be nice to have a place where those of like-mind and similar interests could come together to relax, learn and grow. We are a group of long-term friends who were able to connect from all different places in the world, despite cultural and religious differences, thanks to the various communities in SL. Here at the ashram, we aim to work in cooperation with the already established communities to help avatars (and the people behind them) transcend the typical boundaries of race, age, religion, etc. and come to meet in a place where they are welcomed and encouraged to share their own beliefs while still being open to receiving others' thoughts. I visited the place; and inevitably the thought came back to the true Indian ashram. I would like you to tell me what are the objectives of these shared spaces and open to what and why. -I'm so glad the place resonated for you! Within the sim we have a few places aimed at different activities. We have a forest campsite meeting area where we hold regular philosophy discussions. There is a gallery and bonfire where we host dances, rituals, and artists who inspire some kind of contemplation or have

a generally spiritual aim. At the main ashram building we have space for yoga, where we host yoga sessions as well as discussions on yoga-based topics. Across the hall we have a meditation room where there is always space for private meditation but we also have guided meditations and dharma talks. In the center we have a space for concerts and gatherings as we have a few pianists and jazz artists who play for us. We also have a cultural center in the sky where we have a stage, a library and a movie center. We hope that people will come to enjoy the space even when there isn't an event as there are many places for personal use as well as time with friends relaxing, chatting, etc. I read from your notes that you read meetings on topics and authors dealing with the "discovery and nurturing of one's self"; could you tell me something about it, related to the experience in SL? -All of us who came together to create this wonderful space have come from various different backgrounds and locations RL. It was through SL that we connected and have learned so much from each other both spiritually and secularly. We all strongly believe that it is through platforms such as this, where the stereotypes and biases drop away, that we can transcend labels of religions and other traditions and instead get to the basic teachings that are found among all traditions worldwide throughout history that of cultivating heart/mind. The name of the ashram itself speaks to this; "cittabhavana" means cultivating heart/mind. Whether or not you believe in a self/ Self, we can all agree that there is some benefit to working on inner growth. As is commonly quoted, all change starts from within. As human beings, we have a responcibility to ourselves and those around us, the environment even, to be the best we can be. That doesn't mean that we have to strive for some ideal, but that we can be aware in each moment to allow for conscious-being. By that I mean being able to give yourself and therefore

others the care and attention that you deserve. There have been studies done that show that any practice our avatars do is mirrored in our physical body. People who have physical limitations are able to experience and explore things they may not be able to in RL. So, for these and many other reasons we believe that SL has the ability to reach a wide-range of people in ways that perhaps they wouldn't be comfortable exploring in public spaces - such as meditation, yoga, and other methods of self-inquiry from art and music to discussions. It is our hope to provide space for people to develop these interests and expand their boundaries from the comfort of their own homes, with no monetary obligation. It is perhaps too often these days that it is advertised to "Get Enlightened! Only $99.99 for the box set". Here, at the Ashram, we offer no expectations (beyond compassion for your fellow avatars), no "quick enlightenment" program, only the opportunity to look inside and see what nourishes you, and then see that we are here to provide that space for you to grow in. We have the power to teach each other so much about ideas and practices that perhaps we wouldn't encounter in RL. Please come to share your perspective and take in the beautiful space we have created for you. We have a calendar on our blog:

Our public group is Creativity; Karma, and we also have a subscribo-matic for those who don't have group space but still with to receive notices! So...if you are interested in these issues stay tuned.
