MISSION

Maumee Valley Country Day School cultivates an inclusive community of intellectual excellence where learners creatively explore their passions and boldly inspire positive change in the world.

VISION

Personal. Experiential. Global.

GUIDING PRINCIPLE

We create an environment of freedom and responsibility to Think. Speak. Explore. Choose. Connect. Be you.

STATEMENT OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

At Maumee Valley, we recognize and embrace our responsibility to foster an inclusive, equitable, safe, and respectful community. We cultivate a community in which students, faculty, staff, and families feel genuinely welcome and are encouraged to learn from, with, and about one another. We honor the uniqueness of each individual and embrace diverse backgrounds, values, learning styles, and points of view to build a strong inclusive community.

At Maumee Valley, we want all community members to know: We see you. We hear you. We value you.

GIVING THANKS FOR YOUR PASSIONATE SUPPORT

Dear Friends of Maumee Valley,

With the dawn of a new year, we are now approaching an unbelievable milestone: our 140th anniversary. While the girls-only school established by the Smead sisters bears little resemblance to today’s Maumee Valley Country Day School, we are nonetheless part of a continuum of local private education extending to 1884. We also are making preparations to celebrate, also next year, our 90th anniversary at our Reynolds Road location.

Our longevity and prosperity has always been fueled by a simple philosophy: eschewing convention and embracing change. This approach has allowed generations of students, families, and faculty to form bonds to each other as well as this place. Our philosophy mirrors the country day school movement itself, which took the rigor and camaraderie found among the best boarding schools in the East and applied them to settings outside of cities. Coupled with our focus on a student’s mental as well as physical well-being, it becomes clear why we have thrived as an alternative approach to education.

We also have flourished for another reason: the passionate devotion demonstrated by generations of MV graduates and their families. Experiences and memories formed on campus continue to positively guide lives, and with that impact has come lasting gratitude. No example is more telling of this appreciation than the voluntary financial support provided to us each year. In this Philanthropic Report, we share that generosity with the Maumee Valley community. Our ability to transform students’ lives would not be possible without ongoing support from hundreds of alumni and other supporters.

On behalf of generations past and those yet to be transformed on campus, we thank you for believing in our mission. Our future remains bright and our path lit by the support and encouragement of so many.

With thanks and admiration,

Lynn D. Casto Head of School

Giving Tuesday breaks record with $50,000 in donations

Thanks to alumni, families, and friends, Maumee Valley had a historic Giving Tuesday campaign Nov. 29. The school received more than $35,000 from 188 gifts. The generosity allowed the school to receive an anonymous $15,000, pledged to us if we met fundraising goals. The $50,000 total goes toward the 2022-2023 Annual Fund, which has as its theme: Together Be: Bold, Passionate, Change, You!

“Thank you to those who shared links, sent email reminders, and reminded classmates,” said Brian Oliver, director of annual giving and parent engagement who oversaw the campaign. “Thanks also to the Alumni Council and MVPA who helped us get the word out. Most importantly, a special thank you to the donor who challenged us to have a record day,” he added. “It brought us all together in support of our great school.”

Giving Tuesday is a vital part of our annual philanthropic efforts, Mr. Oliver said. The initiative helps the school with its 2022-2023 MV Fund campaign in many ways, especially by reaching our participation goals: 9 percent alumni and alumni parents and 60 percent current parents.

If you have not yet given, we hope you will join those who made a difference during Giving Tuesday and at other times throughout the year with an MV Fund gift. You can make a donation online at mvcds.org/giving. If you have already given, thank you again.

WEATHERVANE SOCIETY

The Weathervane Society at Maumee Valley honors individuals who have supported the school’s mission by including a gift in a bequest, life insurance provision, or other estate plan. Through imagination and strategic charitable planning, donors are helping to ensure a positive future for Maumee Valley students and faculty. The school offers several giving strategies to maximize tax advantages and financial flexibility:

• Bequests, retirement accounts, and other testamentary gift plans can be simple to set up and allow donors to maintain access to assets.

• Life-income gifts provide donors and/or their loved ones with an income for the duration of their lives or for a specific number of years.

• Charitable lead trusts can be used to transfer assets to a charitable organization with a significantly reduced tax liability.

• Retirement plans (IRA, SEP, 401(k), 403(b), ESOP, etc.) allow donors to name Maumee Valley as a primary or contingent beneficiary. Such designations may allow donors to make a larger gift than anticipated because income and estate taxes are not imposed when plan assets are distributed to the school. A retirement account’s plan administrator (the company that manages the account) can help donors designate MVCDS as a primary or contingent beneficiary on the plan’s beneficiary form.

• Life insurance policies that have substantial cash surrender value can be donated if they are no longer needed for their original intended purpose. Naming MVCDS as the sole or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy may allow donors to make a substantial gift at little or no cost.

Remembering Maumee Valley LOVE OF NATURE CARRIES ON WITH ESTATE GIFT

Thomas R. Deupree, a former MV teacher and head of the Middle School, loved nature and the outdoors so much that he left the world of teaching and educational leadership to open a landscaping business. The Deupree family well understood his love for the outdoors and educating children.

And upon his death, the Deupree Family Foundation made a gift to Maumee Valley of $50,000 to support the Forest School-inspired education program in the Lower School (PreKindergarten through 3rd Grade.)

This gift is shaping learning in two ways: for today’s students, with the purchase of a Yurt to foster a love of outdoor learning, and for tomorrow’s students and faculty through creation of an endowed fund for future initiatives.

“This gift helps us enrich our curriculum by creating even more outdoor and hands-on experiences for students in PreKindergarten through 3rd Grade,” said Michelle Thomas, head of the Lower School. “In the future, we expect the gift to continue supporting our programs by giving our faculty opportunities to further their expertise and to apply that knowledge in our classrooms.”

Mr. Deupree was no stranger to the country day school philosophy, having attended Cincinnati Country Day School (CCDS) in his Ohio hometown. Following in his father’s footsteps, he attended Princeton University, from which he graduated in 1962. Mr. Deupree worked for Citibank in New York for a year before returning home to serve in the Ohio National Guard. He and wife Nikki, who preceded him in death in 2015, married in 1964. “Through her I became interested in teaching,” Mr. Deupree recalled in a post he shared as part of the 50th reunion of his CCDS class.

Mr. Deupree arrived at Maumee Valley Country Day School in 1964, and served as both a teacher and later head of the Middle School. He and his wife and two children lived on a farm in Pemberville.

“I got discouraged with teaching in 1974, didn’t think I was making a difference,” Mr. Deupree shared with CCDS classmates. “I headed grades 6-8, watched them change as they moved through high school. As it turns out, I did make a difference, but I was slow to see it.”

He left Maumee Valley in 1974 and bought a tree nursery near their home. Later, Mrs. Deupree became interested in antiques, with an expertise in folk art, and Mr. Deupree joined her in the business. He became a widely respected folk art dealer. They moved to Suffield, Conn., in the early 1970s, and remained there until becoming Florida residents in 2010. He retired from the antiques business and bought another tree and landscaping business.

Mr. Deupree’s love of the outdoors extended beyond gardens and forests to waterways. A lifelong canoeist, he became closely involved with Camp Kooch-iching and later the Cincinnati-based Camping and Education Foundation. He had traveled by canoe as far north as the Chantrey Inlet, a bay on the Arctic coast of Canada.

11 MAUMEE VALLEY COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

The 44th Annual Auction was a memorable event by every measure, as it raised nearly $210,000 and brought the MV community together as no other event does.

The amount included more than $39,000 from the “Raise the Paddle” initiative, which this year focused on upgrades to the Millennium Theatre, which opened in 2002. Those upgrades are nearly complete, and include repainting the lobby and replacing its carpeting and lighting, and replacing carpet throughout the 300-seat venue.

“The transformation is nothing short of amazing,” said Brian Bozanich, the director of theatre at Maumee Valley. “The upgrades have made this showcase venue sparkle even more. The Millennium Theatre has and will always be a place where the MV community gathers to celebrate.”

“The success of the auction was only possible through the tireless efforts of our chair Rachel Freeman and the strong committee supporting her,” said Lynn Casto, Head of School. “The event is not only a fundraiser, but also a celebration of our community and superb students, families, teachers, and staff.”

The committee and Maumee Valley Country Day School would like to thank the event’s many corporate and individual sponsors: Platinum (Marc Savage & Kim Edwards, Whitacre Logistics LLC, and Buckeye Broadband); Gold (Andrew Weiner/ Morgan Stanley); Silver (Ridi’s, Ford ’82 and Lee Koles, and Maneesha Pandey and Jay Joshi/The Forensic Pathologists LLC); and Bronze (Ohio Pain Center, Linda & Fred Deichert, Rita Breakneck ‘68, Communica, Savage & Associates, Dana Pienta, Key Foundation Fund, Stephanie White ’79, Areka & Tim ’83 Foster, and Katie Bell Ryan ’64).

As president of the Alumni Council for the past year, it’s been my pleasure to get to know alumni from all different years and all over the world and to learn about their lives and accomplishments. In turn, I’ve often been asked about the Council and our work. Alumni want to know who is on the Council, how we’re selected, and what work we do. Here’s a quick primer.

The Council is a group of 10-15 alumni who work to build engagement and connection between former students and Maumee Valley. In addition to hosting events throughout the year, we also vote on the annual Alumni Awards. All alumni are eligible to join the Council and we add new members each year through a nomination process. If you’re interested in joining, we would love to hear from you.

We are excited to announce that MVCDS and the alumni office are back traveling again this year after two years of COVID-19 restrictions. These in-person activities are so important in strengthening connections between alumni and Maumee Valley. In fact, we’ve already had a couple of great events this school year. Thank you to everyone who attended the Fall Tournament & Reunion Weekend Sept. 16-18 and the alumni reception in Chicago Sept. 20. Be on the lookout for an alumni event in a city near you.

I had the pleasure to be back on campus in May for the 87th Annual Smead Luncheon and Alumni Awards Presentation. Congratulations to our honorees: Zeba Khan ’99, Alumni Achievement Award; Jessica Bohl Naprawa ’98, Alumni Service Award; Susie Draper Harris ’51, Alumni Lifetime Dedication Award; Stephen Foster ’84, Alumni Parent Dedication Award; and Dr. Vin Gupta ’01, Young Alumni Award.

While we’re excited to get back to in-person meetings, we’re also continuing the online events we started during the past two years. These Zoom events have been a major success in connecting alumni from all around the world and fostering connections between alumni of different ages. For example, the Council last spring hosted a “Fireside Chat” focused on legal careers. In a panel moderated by Melanie Gross ’91 and Alec Schoepf ’22, attorneys Miriam Gohara ’90 and Rishi Sehgal ’98 shared their personal journeys and pearls of wisdom with an audience of alumni and current students. Look for announcements shortly on upcoming events that will highlight career paths and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We’re also pleased to announce the launch of MVCDS Connect, our professional networking group that we plan to grow in a major way this year. This online platform is an opportunity to connect with other alumni to seek jobs and advice or offer student mentorships. Think of it as a LinkedIn for our Maumee Valley community.

Do you have ideas on how to increase alumni engagement between alumni and MV? Send me your ideas and I’ll share them with the Council.

Tyler Boehm ’01 (tyler.boehm@gmail.com)

Alumni Council President 310-866-6796

P.S. We’re starting the nomination process for next year’s Alumni Awards. Do you know alumni doing great work professionally or in service of the MV community? Anyone can submit a nomination, so please send us your ideas.

FALL TOURNAMENT & REUNION WEEKEND 2022

The annual Fall Tournament and Reunion weekend was a big hit, as alumni from many decides (and especially those from years ending in 2’s and 7’s) returned to campus to watch Hawk teams (soccer, field hockey, and cross country) in action and reminisce with former teachers and classmates.

The Sept. 16-18 celebration began with an opening Friday reception on the Bluestone, followed by more dinners, brunches, and photo opportunities throughout the weekend.

Middle: Celebrating 50 years since graduation were members of the Class of 1972: (from left) Bill Hart, Cyndi Peltonen, Betsey Davis, Trina Joyce, Bruce Baer, and Annette Wallace.

Bottom: Enjoying the Saturday alumni dinner downtown from the Class of 1982 were (from left) Bradford “Ford” Koles Jr., Weezie (Foster) Stoddard, Richard Mitchell, Michelle Morgan, Robert McCreery, and Michael Barnes.

Getting & Giving Back

The annual alumni favorite—Get Back, Give Back Day—took place Nov. 22, during which current students and alumni came together to celebrate community as a sendoff to the Thanksgiving break. The gathering in the Blakey Resource Center included updates specific to each school presented by students, as well as the singing of MV classics such as “Auto Song” and “Turkey Dinner.” Returning alumni led the assemblage in a performance of the alma mater. In addition, returning members from the class of 2022 had lunch with Upper School students.

Alumni Lifetime Dedication Award: Susie Draper Harris ’51

Her engagement with Maumee Valley spans four generations starting with her mother Margrett (Tookie) Wells Draper, who graduated from the Smead School. Her sister Dorma Draper Bun was class of ’53; son Walter was class of ’79; and grandchildren Addy and Sam Rothman were classes of ’09 and ’11. Although her daughter Gingi did not attend MV, many will remember Mrs. Harris’s years of service in the Lower School as a teacher for the 3rd and 4th Grade students where she was better known as “Ms. Rothman.” She was involved in the founding of Maumee Valley’s Alumni Council and has always been a champion of volunteerism and a supporter of the Maumee Valley mission.

Alumni Service Award: Jessica Bohl Naprawa ’98

Celebrating Alumni Achievement: Smead Luncheon honors 5 at MV’s ‘Oscars’

Excellence took center stage last spring as Maumee Valley hosted the 87th Annual Smead Luncheon and Alumni Awards Presentation. The May 6 event honored five alumni for their professional achievements and service to the school.

Also honored was Gracie Stough ’24, the recipient of the Smead School for Girls Scholarship Award. “I am very grateful and honored to have been chosen as the recipient of this award,” Gracie said. “Maumee Valley is a wonderful environment that offers amazing experiences and provides many opportunities, which have helped me grow over the past two years.”

After college, Mrs. Naprawa worked and lived in New York until she and husband Drew decided to move back to the Midwest to be closer to family while raising sons Henry ’28 and Harper ’28. After the boys enrolled at MV, she became re-engaged with her alma mater and has been an incredible volunteer and community leader. She co-chaired two of the last three Auctions, bringing new ideas and renewed enthusiasm to a very tough assignment. She has an undeniable creative streak that has shown up in her contributions to student projects, MV spirit wear, and art in the Annual Auction. Mrs. Naprawa also has served as president of the MV Alumni Council and Alumni Council Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Alumni Parent Dedication Award: Stephen Foster ’84

In addition to being a “Lifer” and MV graduate, Mr. Foster was also an MV parent from 1996 to 2021. During this time, and even still, our community was the beneficiary of numerous projects involving him. Sometimes, he was leading a Winterim project or teaching students furniture building. Other times, he was supporting the theater department with elaborate sets. He designed and built the

high school lockerroom remodel, led a class that built the Lower School common area furniture, and helped build the many COVID-19 desks used when in-person learning resumed.

ALUMNI NEWS 17 MAUMEE VALLEY COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

Mr. Chapman (back row), with honoree Alex Ni ‘24 (to his left), hosted a lunch for nearly a dozen seniors during his campus visit. At right: Mr. Chapman shares his wisdom with an assembly of Upper School students.

Paying it forward: Eric Chapman ’61 bestows Renaissance

Award

Among the many wonders of our school are the unbreakable bonds alumni have to Maumee Valley. The memories and friendships formed on campus are among the most meaningful in their lives. So it’s no surprise that so many return to share their time and support the next generation.

One such alumnus is Eric Chapman ‘61. After a multifaceted career as an attorney, TV star, film artist, business leader, and minister, he established an endowed scholarship named the Renaissance Student Award. It acknowledges an Upper School student who shares his entrepreneurial drive and renaissance spirit.

Mr. Chapman returned to campus in November to speak at an Upper School assembly and honor the 2022 award recipient: Alexander Ni ’24.

Alex’s artwork was recently displayed at the Focus Art Show, where his “Baroque StillLife” painting received the Toledo Museum of Art Scholarship Award. He’s a leader of the MV Art Club and participates on both the track and basketball teams. He also plays

bass guitar with a student-led group on campus and gives $5 haircuts to Dayal House students. (He must be pretty good, since they keep coming back!) He hopes to be a doctor like his father in China.

Ron Cowie ’88 exhibits photography at Wolfe Gallery

Maumee Valley welcomed back Ron Cowie ’88 for an exhibition of his photography at the Wolfe Gallery. The show, open through Feb. 28, is titled “Retrospective Conversation” and features works from the past 20 years celebrating creativity and visual poetry.

Mr. Cowie has used a camera to process the world as it is, and how he wishes it to be. The pieces chosen for the exhibition reflect that philosophy. “This collection is a demonstration of restless curiosity, rambling poetics, and murmured prayer,” he said. “It is a conversation with the divine.”

Mr. Cowie lives and works in Rhode Island, where he owns Oyster Farm

Productions, a video production company. His work is in the permanent collection of the Newport Art Museum, Boston Public Library, and Maumee Valley Country Day School.

Gratitude served at Leadership Luncheon

Maumee Valley was pleased to welcome members of its Leadership Society back to campus Oct. 15. The Society recognizes alumni and friends who annually give more than $1,000 to the school. This year’s event was hosted by Diana Block ’91, president of the Board of Trustees. The lunch is reimagined each year to

demonstrate donors’ impact on current students and faculty.

Attendees heard from seniors Hera Yang and Eli Marx about how the opportunities at MV are reshaping their Upper School experience. Hera discussed her residency at Dayal House and student leadership positions and Eli spoke of transformative experiences gained through Intensives. In addition, Kate Fleming, who serves in both a faculty role and as co-director of College Counseling, discussed the Global Leadership Program and how it enhances the educational experience at the Upper School.
