MV Fund: Supporting Excellence

Sustaining the Maumee Valley difference

“Maumee Valley Country Day School cultivates an inclusive community of intellectual excellence where learners creatively explore their passions and boldly inspire positive change in the world.” Our mission statement is bold, progressive, and inspiring as it challenges our current students to think, learn, and act as world makers, shapers, and creators.

When our Board of Trustees adopt the school’s annual budget, they do so with a commitment that every student receives an experience personal in design, experiential in practice, and global in perspective and action. This requires a faculty and staff dedicated to their craft, passionate about their work, and committed to serving the mission and vision of our great school. Doing so requires a financial model that carefully melds tuition revenue, annual giving, and endowment support to maximize the MV experience of current students while preserving our school and programs for future students.

To bring our programs to life, MVCDS relies on the generosity and foresight of current families, trustees, alumni, alumni parents, and community organizations. This report illustrates the importance and impact of annual giving at Maumee Valley and the importance of the MV Fund to the school’s present and future.

Creating change with the MV Fund lever

At most independent schools, tuition does not cover the full cost of annual operating expenses. Schools rely on fixed income streams such as giving support and withdrawals from their endowments to make up the difference.

Great independent schools have robust annual giving programs that help control tuition increases, improve programmatic offerings, and provide tuition assistance to students who will benefit from and contribute greatly to the school.

Annual giving through the MV Fund is the lever that community members can use to directly and immediately impact the educational experience for Maumee Valley students and faculty.

IT WOULD TAKE AN ENDOWMENT GROWTH OF MORE THAN

$11,300,000

to match the impact of our $565,000 annual unrestricted giving goal.

MV Fund and unrestricted giving $500,000

Endowment draw (5 percent) $400,000

Tuition and program revenue $9,100,000

Nearly 600 donors contributed to the MV Fund last year. Gifts ranged from $1 to more than $75,000, and every gift had an impact on students.

OUR 2023-2024 OPERATING BUDGET IS $10,000,000

How your gift makes a difference

Gifts to the MV Fund go directly into the school’s current-year operating budget, thereby immediately impacting our ambitious students and world-class educators.

Community Connections

An engaged and inclusive community

Our strategic plan, “Cultivating Potential. Inspiring Change.”, details key areas of opportunity for Maumee Valley through 2026. Forecasting our desired outcomes sets our direction and priorities into sharper focus. Here are examples of annually funded programs that advance our strategic plan and serve our mission:

Our diversity and our collective embrace and support of one another are two of MV’s greatest strengths. Whether it is faculty and staff completing the Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity program, our alumni connecting with one another on Graduway, or our Toledo-based community members enjoying our Iftar, Diwali, and Afro-Am dinners, Maumee Valley intentionally connects with and celebrates all of our constituents.

“We see you, we hear you, we value you” is a key tenet in our diversity statement, and it is lived out through all of our people and programs.

Academic Opportunity

Where passion meets purpose

Through small class sizes and courses designed around global fluency and experiential learning, Maumee Valley’s students and faculty are equipped to explore, infer, analyze, and innovate.

The Global Leadership Program, Intensives, Forest School, and X-Block all help to bolster the discovery of knowledge, not the memorization of it. Our arts and athletics programs allow mastery and experimentation, challenging and inspiring our students. Global travel connects students’ classrooms to new cultures and ways of viewing the world. And independent studies allow students to chase their curiosity.

These initiatives are just a few where passion meets purpose and our mission and guiding principle come to life.

Organizational Excellence

A world-class faculty

Our premier educational experience requires talented and passionate people to bring it to life. With a deep commitment to faculty professional development both nationally (National Association of Independent Schools, Independent Schools Association of the Central States, and People of Color Conference) and internationally (Reggio Emilia Approach training in Italy), we nurture the professional growth and personal well-being of our faculty and staff. Extensive professional development offerings, the Dream Odyssey, and our commitment to inclusive hiring demonstrate to faculty and staff that they are valued and respected.

Our faculty and staff bring our mission and vision to life and are essential to our success.

Sustainability

Our MV for all generations

Affordability and sustainability are critical and often competing components of a school’s financial planning. Thanks to a strong annual giving program and prudent financial modeling, Maumee Valley has been able to decrease our reliance on endowment draws. As we build toward tomorrow, we continue to grow our endowment, add planned giving and grant-writing programs, and implement our strategic plan while regularly updating our facilities master plan.

Doing so has allowed us to balance financial support of current students with our desire to keep our school accessible to future families and students.

All of these initiatives and more are supported by gifts to the MV Fund.
