ART BRUT PRESENTATIONS – STANISŁAW ZAGAJEWSKI
Art brut – as the French artist, critic and art dealer Jean Dubuffet, who coined the term, defined it – is a raw (rough) and unfalsified art. Dubuffet was interested in the creation of those excluded, isolated or forced to the margin of social life. Art brut is intriguing as its departure from the traditional artistic and aesthetic forms does not stem from conscious rejection of the legacy of culture and does not testify to a rebellion or alienation. The artists create driven by a natural urge for it. One of

THE FOTOPLASTIKON I KISS YOUR HAND, MADAME
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries frivolous photographs and postcards displaying erotic motifs became very popular. Their authors certainly cannot be denied a sense of humour in using conjecture, allusion, a promise of passionate feelings woven into the various scenes of everyday life. The exhibition presented in the fotoplastikon
features period photographs from the collection of Muzeum Śląskie, and descriptions of the images are enriched by some of the most beautiful examples of Polish love poetry.

JÓZEF BRANDT’S NEW OPENING
In the space of small temporary exhibitions, two paintings by Józef Brandt are presented. One of them is Niebezpieczna przeprawa (Dangerous Crossing) considered to be among the most significant works in the collection of the Muzeum Śląskie. The second presented image, coming from a private collection, is an equestrian portrait of Zbigniew Horodyński (Spacer konno – A Stroll on Horseback). Listed among the leading Polish military artists, Józef Brandt had unique visual memory and an imagination of a film-mak-

Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice, ul. T. Dobrowolskiego 1 Art brut is a mysterious phenomenon, in which creation becomes a duty rather than the meaning of life. The artist may lose touch with reality, but never with his urge to create, which determines his life. Władysław Grygny is an example of such a creative personality. Weird, isolating himself from the society, on the verge of subsistence, he has created expressive and colourful images for a few dozen years, never showing them to

The exhibition in the new seat of Muzeum Śląskie accentuates the onset of a new stage in the history of the institution. 30 leading Polish artists have been invited, belonging to a few generations and representing various disciplines, multiple perspectives and a wealth of individualism and creativity. The manner of selection of the artists is to express the openness of the museum as a place of dialogue as well as of an encoun-

ORANGE SELLER – A COPY OR A REPLICA?
Two most renowned paintings by Aleksander Gierymski – one belonging to the collection of Muzeum Śląskie in Katowice and one to Muzeum Narodowe in Warsaw – will be exhibited in the gallery. The two artworks are a perfect example of a studio replica – a painting of the same theme and similar conceptualisation, created by the same author. For what purpose?

PAINTED WITH LIGHT ICONS FROM THE COLLECTION OF MUZEUM ŚLĄSKIE IN KATOWICE AND MUZEUM ŚLĄSKA CIESZYŃSKIEGO IN CIESZYN
On exhibition in the rooms in al. W. Korfantego the most interesting icons will be presented, arranged thematically. As Orthodox Christian art enjoys great popularity, it is the second time the icons – which became part of museum collections following confiscation by customs authorities to prevent their being smuggled abroad – have been exhibited. Both musems have the largest collections of Orthodox Christian religious objects in Silesia.
