MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
(Athletes from the left) Dave Duncan, Mercedes Nicoll, Tyler Mosher, Marielle Thompson
Welcome to the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Spring/Summer 2015 Recreation Program Guide. This is your handbook to the breadth of indoor and outdoor activities available throughout Whistler. The guide covers the activities for every age—from infant to child to adult—and includes all the municipal recreation venues. These venues include the award-winning Whistler Public Library which is visited by 700 people each day, the drop-in sports and after-school programming at Myrtle Philip Community School, Whistler Secondary School, Spring Creek Community School, Spruce Grove Field House, Lost Lake PassivHaus, Whistler Youth Centre as well as at the community hub for sports: Meadow Park Sports Centre. Meadow Park Sports Centre offers fitness programs, personal training, squash courts, a weight room, swimming lessons, public skating, a six-lane 25-metre pool, a leisure pool, sauna, steam room, and hot tub. For the very young, there are parent and baby fitness classes, swimming classes, preschooler art, sport, science, ballet and musical programs. Children can choose from golf, science, Zumba, dance and swimming. During summer break, we have five fun camps and sports programs. The camps are at Myrtle Philip Community School and run from June 29 to September 4, 2015. Register early to ensure a spot. For youth over the age of 13, Whistler’s Youth Centre is a place to hang out with friends, skateboard on the mini ramp, or play pool or table tennis. There is also a series of swimming courses, aquatic leadership programs and lifeguarding qualifications. The last Saturday of each month has a youth only swim. Adults can try drop-in or league sports, weight training, swim classes, skating, pottery, or squash. One of Whistler’s greatest strengths is the variety of year-round recreation. I encourage you all to spend time outside this summer and enjoy the Valley Trail network, which runs between the 31 community and neighbourhood parks along the beautiful string of lakes. Have a wonderful and active summer!

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Connect Parent Group Do you want to learn more about your child’s behaviour? Connect Parent Group is coming to Whistler! Connect is an attachment-based program for parents and caregivers of preteens (8-12) and teens (13-18) who are struggling to understand and respond to difficult behaviour. Parents meet in small groups with 2 trained group leaders for 10 weeks, 1 hour each week. Each session provides parents with new information about parent-child relationships and adolescent development. Parents watch role-plays and try exercises that offer new choices for responding to their child’s behaviour. Connect understands that each child, and each parent, is different, and that change is part of development. Rather than teach only one way of parenting, Connect helps parents see choices that support healthy relationships, including setting limits and helping their child to move forward. If you would like to register for the program, or if you require more information, please call 604-902-0809, or email Leanne.Toews@gov.bc.ca. HOW TO BECOME A LIFEGUARD
Lifeguarding and Swim Instructing can be one of the most valuable and rewarding training experiences of your life. Lifeguards/Swim Instructors prevent incidents from occurring, perform rescues and first aid when accidents do happen, and teach/promote water safety to community members of all ages, especially children. If you enjoy helping others, making a difference in people’s lives and being around the water, then Lifeguarding/Swim Instructing may be for you! Below is a list of the training requirements to become a lifeguard in British Columbia. In fact these qualifications will allow you to work at most pools in Canada, which makes it the perfect job for those of you who want to live/work/attend school in different parts of the country.

LEVEL
DESCRIPTION
RCSK 1
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.
RCSK 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.
RCSK 3
This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.
RCSK 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.
RCSK 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.
RCSK 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.
RCSK 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.
RCSK 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.
RCSK 9
RCSK 10
Page 32
This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim. This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Kirstyn McCasey, Lifeguard/Instructor My name is Kirstyn, and I have been working at Meadow Park as a Lifeguard for the past three years. I have been inspired by many people striving to reach their goals here in Whistler. My goal is to complete Ironman this summer. The supportive and energetic environment at Meadow Park has been so helpful in my training so far. I hope to inspire others to reach their own goals throughout my process. I cannot wait to be part of such a wonderful event and have the support of those around me as I cross the finish line.
