Message from the Mayor

Welcome to the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s (RMOW) Fall/Winter Recreation Guide. This guide lists the breadth of recreation programs offered by the municipality. There is something for everyone from parents with infants, to children’s Christmas camps, swimming lessons, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, fitness classes for adults, as well as seniors and youth programming. New this season, Meadow Park Sports Centre is upgrading their fitness centre equipment, the Fitness Staff is starting Walking Wednesdays for adults over 55, and Kids on the Go, our licensed afterschool care program will be accepting kindergarten-aged children this September. The Council-appointed Recreation Leisure Advisory Committee meets regularly to assist Council with recreation decisions and to support recreation opportunities in the community. Meadow Park Sports Centre is the community hub for sports. The facility has a six-lane pool, kids’ pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub, a skating arena, squash courts, weight room and fitness studio. The municipality provides programs at several venues: through Myrtle Philip Community School, Whistler Secondary School, Spring Creek Community School, Whistler Youth Centre, Whistler Public Library, and at Whistler Olympic Plaza. Recreation is also offered at Whistler’s 31 community and neighbourhood parks, as well as the Valley Trail and other venues. Whistler has a very active community and the huge variety of recreation offered by the municipality serves the demand from residents, second homeowners and visitors. Enjoy the fall and winter seasons! Nancy Wilhelm-Morden Mayor Resort Municipality of Whistler

My name is Andrew Eccles and I have worked in a number of different roles for the RMOW Recreation Department, mostly at Myrtle Philip Community Centre, since moving to Whistler in 2009. As a certified teacher working with children in the field of Recreation I really enjoy the countless teachable moments throughout the day where children are building important life skills. I particularly love all of the social learning that can be accomplished in a recreational environment. I am truly a kid at heart who loves to play, be silly and have fun! I love living in Whistler because of the endless list of sporting and adventure pursuits it has to offer, as well as the beautiful natural environment and laid back locals.

Childrens Programs

The Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Kids on the Go programs are Licensed under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and governed through Vancouver Coastal Health and the Community Care Facilities Licensing program. The Community Care Facilities Licensing program protects and promotes the health, safety and well-being of vulnerable children and adults in licensed care facilities. We do this through education, collaboration and regulation. A community care facilities licence is required for all programs and facilities providing care to three or more children who are not related to the operator by blood or marriage.

Licensing officers: • Issue licences to community care facilities • Monitor and inspect facilities on a routine basis • Respond to complaints • Investigate allegations of unsafe, inappropriate or abusive care (i.e. physical, sexual, emotional, financial abuse) • Investigate unlicensed facility complaints • Work with other agencies as required (e.g. police, Ministry of Child and Family Development) • Ensure that licensees follow-up with corrective action All facilities must be in compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act, the Residential Care Regulations and the Child Care Licensing Regulations. For more information on licensed programs go to www.vch.ca/your-environment/facilitylicensing The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) offers a safe environment for children to expand their horizons through our various sporting and recreation programs. For the past 23 years, the RMOW has been providing a nurturing, stimulating and challenging environment for the afterschool program known as Kids on the Go.

How to Register for the first time If you are having your child attend our program for the first time please contact the office at 604.935.8370 or email kotg@whistler.ca to set up an appointment to review our program and receive notification of all the appropriate paperwork required. Part of being a licensed program requires very specific paperwork including a copy of your child’s immunization records and emergency consent cards that must be filled out in person prior to your child attending, (these travel with us and contain your contact information and consent for your child to receive emergency care should something happen while in our care).

How to add days once your child has attended Please email kotg@whistler.ca or phone 604.935.3145 in your requests for additions or cancellations in accordance with our Cancelation and Refund Policy. Both the phone voice mail and email address is checked frequently throughout the day so please leave a message of your request and we will get back to you in a timely manner. To add a full day or afterschool day, a minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required. Space is not guaranteed with minimal notice.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: We understand families have variable schedules as a result we use a flexible registration software, however KOTG still needs to staff and plan the program accordingly. To receive a refund the following is required: • One week’s notice to cancel full day care. • Three days’ notice to cancel afterschool care.

Physical Literacy Fundamental Movement Skills Mastering Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) is the most important step in developing physical literacy. FMS are basic movement skills taught through games and activities that engage children and motivate them to continue in an activity. While these basic skills are fun in nature, they also serve the purpose of teaching the essential skills required as a foundation for more complex physical activities and sports. It is important that all children develop a good base of these skills before puberty to optimize both future performance and lifelong activity.

Do you know about Physical Literacy? Just like reading and writing, children have to learn how to move. Goal of the Whistler Physical Literacy Initiative Every child in Whistler will have the opportunity to develop both physical literacy and games literacy. And that there will be a variety of activities for all individuals to promote lifelong physical activity and participation for life. Physical Literacy Definition Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life. (International Physical Literacy Association, 2014) www.physicalliteracy.ca Literacy is defined as: A person’s knowledge of a particular subject or field, for example, computer literacy. Therefore, Physical Literacy is: The mastering of fundamental movements skills. Physically literate individuals: • Demonstrate a wide variety of basic human movements, fundamental movement skills and fundamental sports skills. • Move with poise, confidence, competence and creativity in different physical environments (on the ground, both indoor and outdoor; in the air; in and on water; on snow and ice). • Develop the motivation and ability to understand, communicate, apply and analyze different forms of movement. • Make choices that engage them in physical activity, recreation or sport activities that enhance their physical and psychological wellness, and permit them to pursue sport excellence commensurate with their ability and motivation. www.canadiansportforlife.ca

Swimkids 7 and 8 have been programmed as standalone classes on Wednesday nights in Fall. This is to better accommodate demand for each class, and improve lesson quality.

Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Instructor course: This course has been updated for 2016, please see the Course Description for more information!

Pricing Information: In order to reflect the community costs incurred by the operation of the MPSC pool, SwimKids and Preschool lesson prices have been updated accordingly.

Parented Classes: Please be aware that only one caregiver/ parent may attend a class with their child. If both parents wish to attend, we recommend parents alternate accompanying their child to each class.

Waitlists: If the class that you would like to register for is full, please add your child to the waitlist. If a space opens up, we will contact you as soon as we are aware. We will also try to accommodate creating new lessons for waitlists, dependant on instructor availability, pool space and other considerations.

Private Lessons: We have added weekend morning private lessons into our regular lesson schedule. Please take a look at the detailed course description for more information.

Lesson Evaluations: If you are unsure which lessons your child should attend, and your child is above the age of 3, any lifeguard at the MPSC may perform a swim evaluation free of charge. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Participation in Red Cross Swim may qualify you for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

Chris Gavin, Maintenance II Moving to Whistler in 2005 kindled a sense of adventure in me that has become an important part of my life. Skiing, paddling, hiking and the mountains were all new interests and it was hard to know where to start. I have been lucky to meet some amazing people in this community that shared their knowledge and experiences with me, making the transition from “farm boy” to “mountain man” possible. Working in the recreation department gives me the opportunity to give back to the community that I appreciate so much. It also allows me to interact with our resort guests and share my passion for many of the things that brought them here. Providing a safe and enjoyable experience through good maintenance practices is something I take a great deal of pride in.

We never want to meet your parents. If we do, that means you won’t be around to introduce us. Every year in BC about 1,800 pedestrians are hit by vehicles at night. Make yourself visible and always walk facing traffic. Don’t make your parents fly to Whistler to pack up your things — when you’re dead.
