GIANNI VERSACE: 16 years after

This month we remember the passing of one of the biggest fashion icons of the 20th century, Gianni Versace.

During the 1990’s, supermodels arrived and became the designers best allies for publicity. Singers, such as, Elton John and Madonna centered the brand as the “It” label of the era.

A

tragic end. on July 15, 1997, after having breakfast, Versace went out to purchase some magazines and the paper. As he returned to his Casa Casuarina, on South Beach, two gun shots were heard throughout the neighborhood, as Versace turned around and fell into a pool of blood. Meanwhile, his executioner, Andrew Cunanan, left the murder scene. Gianni was mortally wounded while climbing the stairs of his home. Cunanan would eventually be tracked down in a boat house were authorities found that the psychopath had committed suicide. As soon as the news of Gianni Versace’s death hit the news, the myth started taking shape, for the man was an artist that had left behind a legacy and a great body of work. The news shocked the world. Gianni Versace was born in Calabria, in southern Italy, in 1946. Since childhood he was in contact with fabrics, scissors and rulers. His mother was a dressmaker and had a clothing store in which the child spent many hours. He had two brothers, Santo and Donatella. He studied architectural design, a career that would forever influence his future collections. In 1972, he left his hometown and headed to Milan, where luck and fame awaited him.

But the “Black dress with gold safety pins” worn by actress, Elizabeth Hurley, would catapult the designer into world wide fame. The Versace style is unmistakable and Gianni would mix styles such as classic features, bold prints, daring cuts, asymmetries with a decadent allure. He was inspired by Greco-Roman art, Renaissance, Baroque, Art Deco and Avant-Garde. He has influenced designers and the fashion world to the extent were some of his standard features can be detected in contemporary dresses.

He took his first stitches in the atelier of Salvatore Chiodini and Ezio Nicosia, and began to weave his career with designs for Callaghan and Genny. In 1974, he created his first collection under the label Accomplice. Two years later, and seeing the potential of his brother, Santo decided to abandon his profession and met with Gianni in Milan. The following year, in 1977, Donatella would complete the trio that would create a myth in the fashion world. The first Versace collection was launched in February, 1978. The company grew and expanded to other markets such as Paris, London and New York. In 1979, Versace began collaborating with Richard Avedon on a unique fashion campaign that would seduce the world. The designer created costumes for the ballet and for many movie stars.

ACCESS RUM

CUBA LIBRE, CUBALIBRE OR RONCOLA

THE MOST FAMOUS DRINK IN THE WORLD TAKES IT’S NAME FROM A COUNTRY AND SODA POP. Cuba Libre: the crisp & singular cocktail, is a mix of rum and coke. In other countries, like Argentina & Chile, it is known as Cubalibre. It’s also called RonCola in Mexico, although colloquially referred to, as cubata. In some communities across the country, this term has degenerated and can be referred to any drink, mixed with soda, resulting in a strong alcoholic beverage.

T

he story of the invention of the Cuba Libre varies according to several sources. The drink was mixed in Havana, Cuba, with Bacardi rum, around the years 1901/1902. During this period, U.S. forces who collaborated with Cuba during the Spanish-American war, regularly mixed rum and cola in a glass of whiskey. They used to serve this drink and began to call it Cuba Libre, in honor of the battle cry of Cuban troops.

A soldier of the time has the following version: “The second most popular beverage in the world was born in a collision between the U.S. and Spain. This occurred during the Spanish-American War, at the turn of century, with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. One afternoon, a group of off-duty soldiers from the U.S. gathered in a bar in Old Havana. Fausto Rodriguez, a young messenger, later recalled that Captain Russell came in and ordered Bacardi (Gold) and Coca-Cola on ice. The captain drank with such pleasure that it aroused the interest of the soldiers around. The barman was asked to prepare the drink for all of them. Bacardi Rum and Coke was an instant hit, as it is to this day. When ordered another round, one soldier suggested that they name it Cuba Libre! for the Cuba that had been newly released “.

CARPET’S IMPACT ON FASHION In 2013, the Oscar awards ceremony was seen by 40.3 million viewers worldwide. Thousands of these spectators were seated in front of their televisions, not because they necessarly wanted to see their favorite actor, actress or movie win an award, but rather who was wearing what by whom and how. The fashion show that occurs when artists begin walking down the red carpet is the most awaited moment in the awards telecast.

N

o doubt the red carpet means big profits for the fashion houses and luxury good brands. Examples like JLO’s famous green dress by Versace; the geometric diamond bracelet Charlize Theron had on the year she won; the cream satin dress with a red fold on Angelina’ Jolie’s neckline are a few examples of dresses and jewels that, hours after appearing on a red carpet, are ordered or are copied by hundreds. Shops around the world try to obtain the goods or items that look alike. Besides the famous labels, it’s believed that the companies that are dedicated to duplicate or copy the couture dresses that appear in awards programs and two months later, (if not sooner), can be ordered online for a fraction of the price, are the most benefited. Many brands pay celebrities to wear their clothes and jewels and / or they are given away. Here we can also understand why so many people are poorly dressed and that is: “Beggars can’t be choosers”. There are many actors and singers that depend on their image greatly. Investing in a stylist is part of the new set of rules. The importance of looking your best for an award show is of incredible

importance, simply, because millons are watching what you have on and “How look says a thousand words”. In 2012, 19.67 million people tuned into the Golden Globe awards. That same year, 13 million viewers watched the Emmy Awards. The Grammy awards ceremony was seen by 39.3 million people. People look up to these award shows for entertainment, inspiration and many want to look like their favorite stars. All of these attitudes towards the award show have a dollar value because, when people go out shopping they will, consciously or unconsciously, look for items and pieces they saw their stars wear during one of these programs. Fans especially, seek to emulate their Madonna’s, Clooney’s, Pitt’s, Jolie’s and Di Capprio’s. For many viewers, there is a great interest on how to incorporate this ability to dress well in the real world, whether figurative or in a literal way. Exposure of labels & brands represent skyrocketing sales and, for artists, worldwide recognition and exposure. Businesswoman, Susan Ashbrook, pioneered the idea of product placement with celebrities when she founded, Fashion Film Company, in 1994. For 14 years, she worked as a liaison between fashion companies and celebrities. Ashbrook wrote a book, where she details and re counts how this trend can bring life to your business and how this business move. The book shows what’s the norm of the day when it comes to selling anything consumers may want, big time. Keep your eye on what you see on the red carpet, if you follow the fashion verbatim or your buisness is based on what is “IN” this will be your best gateway.

ACCESS WOMAN

What do you like best about your job/ career? The availability to imagine and use my hands to create art pieces and the opportunity to be surrounded by beautiful people and magical places. Every time I get the chance to do shows and catalogs it is like creating magic, a world of new fantasies with designs. Do you believe in teamwork? Why? Of course, I can’t do anything alone. I need my family, my friends and my partners to be a better person, a better woman and have a better company. What has been the greatest professional satisfaction in your career? I have not accomplished that phase yet. I am just in the begging of my career.... the best is yet to come. What do you think of this: “You have to give in order to get”? The more I give, the more I will be at peace with myself and others. We came to this world to give and help. In order to be thankful in life, I have realized, that I’m blessed to be alive and pursuing my dream and I’m at the point where I care very much for others. What do you do in your free time? I love to go to the movies, swim and to the beach to refresh my thoughts and my energy.

A FASHION DESIGNER IN THE MAKING

What haven’t you done yet that you wish to accomplish in your lifetime? Open my first boutique. What do you understand by the word “compassion”? Caring and being equal, everything has to be a balance and I am so blessed to be alive and have so many opportunities ahead of me.

How easy and / or difficult was it to get to where you are now? It has been a challenging experience for me, but being an Entrepreneur and creating everything from zero, has made me realize how tough and strong I can be. I’ve become a wiser woman in this process of making my dream a reality. I’m a designer but this journey is creating a lot of new characters, passions and emotions in my life. What did you study? I’m a Fashion Designer. I received very high honors in my class for presenting the best collection at my graduation in Medellin, Colombia. I do have a Masters in Fashion Marketing in Bogota, Colombia. A proverb or saying that is incorporated in your day to day to motivate you or others? “Live is a beach and I am just playing in the sand…..”

Favorite food? Almonds, nuts, and fruits. What song do you listen to that inspires you, lifts and motivates you? Lately, I got stuck to Bruno Mars music, he is full of life and reality. What color brings you joy and /or serenity and why?’ White, is light, Pink is so girly to me, and Gold, which is luxury and elegance...... those are the three colors of my brand. What advice would you give to a younger person who wishes to follow your footsteps? God has a perfect plan for you! And if he gives you that dream, follow your heart and trust him. He will give you the right tools to be available to pursue your passion. It is going to be very tough and lot of competition, it is not easy but if you do it with your heart and love, it is going to pay off.

ACCESS MAN

Me haces reír.

Yo no me cuelgo nada. Azzaro
