EXPECT MORE Because Dragons are awesome. “Dragon” /'drag· n/ inspires mythical images in fables from long ago – enormous reptiles associated with water, the heavens and fertility. At Minnesota State University Moorhead, Dragons embrace inner strength. Strong, powerful and wise, Dragons exhibit the grit to get things done and the heart to change the world.

Yep, that’s our Dragon sculpture. It didn’t rise out of the ashes, as school lore suggests, but was donated by a Chinese restaurant owner from the Twin Cities. True story. And, just so you know, it does breathe fire!

Manager or analyst? We’ll help you create the next chapter in your journey, whether your path is clear and straightforward or a little random and messy. Our talented faculty will develop your passions in and out of class. You’ll question, be challenged and maybe learn some surprising things about yourself. Our faculty love to teach. And they’re good. Really good. In fact, MSUM has

more Carnegie Professors of the Year (11) than any other state university in a five-state region. Take Film Professor Kyja KristjanssonNelson, our most recent Carnegie professor. Not only is she on a firstname basis with her students, but she collaborates with them by working on a shoot together or going through edits on a project. “I don’t see myself as their teacher for one class and we’re done. I try to find out where they are now, where they want to go, and help them figure out how to get there. Part of being a teacher is helping students find their path in life, no matter what that path is. “It can be a challenge, but it's also one of the most rewarding things about teaching.”

Early hands-on experience (her first semester in the program) and frequent exposure to classrooms helped Katie decide education was the right field for her. But it was a cross-cultural teaching experience in Taiwan with Professor Sheila Marquart that opened Katie’s eyes to the world. “She models what it’s like to teach the whole student. I’ve learned that it’s important to be a global citizen, to understand what’s happening in our world, and to connect and participate in worldly communication.”

Katie’s tip: Get connected by participating in residence hall activities and events. It’s easier to be more motivated to go to class if you don’t have to drive or find a parking spot. Getting a job in the halls is convenient and the leadership opportunity is outstanding.
