HEIDI PETERSON

Struggles with drug and alcohol addiction prevented me from following through on my first two attempts at college, but I went to treatment and got sober in 2012

M State helped lay the foundation for my academic journey and sparked my desire to pursue further education.

I moved to Fergus Falls and had my first son in 2014. I felt ready to advance my education. Due to my personal experiences, I knew I wanted a career focused on helping others. I enrolled in the Nursing program at M State in 2015 and graduated with my associate of science degree in nursing in 2018.

I had a wonderful experience at M State. I loved the small class sizes, affordable tuition and knowledgeable instructors. Learning was fun at M State, and it equipped me with the knowledge, skills and training to start my nursing career. I recently obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and plan to continue my education to pursue a master’s degree in nursing. M State helped lay the foundation for my academic journey and sparked my desire to pursue further education.

At M State, the instructors want to see you succeed – you know the teachers care. That makes the program so completely different than anything I’ve experienced. On my first day of classes, my instructor told us that she already looked at us as RNs, and I knew I was going to love it here.

At M State, the instructors want to see you succeed –you know the teachers care.

We get a lot of hands-on experience in our skills labs and our clinicals. I’ve seen the clinical paperwork that my friends at other colleges do, and our program is as hard or harder than theirs. I look at my classmates and think, “Wow, we’re going to be a good group of nurses.”

Something I’ve found at M State is that every student has a story. At M State, there are people from all walks of life – who have other degrees, who had their kids early, who are minorities. That’s something I value because everybody has a story, yet everyone is seen as an equal at M State.

I realized that what I was previously going to college for was just not a good match with the future lifestyle I desire. I work in the radiology department at the main Sanford hospital in Fargo. I did some research and found the Limited Scope Radiography program at M State and decided that it was going to be the best choice for me. I really enjoy the small class size we have. It is nice having so much hands-on time and getting to move at our own pace. It is an amazing learning opportunity.

PARTNERS SPEAK

Students are well-trained and ready for employment at the time of graduation. We have been fortunate to have had many of our new hires in clinical at our facility. We require high image quality, and that’s something that is emphasized in the M State program. I would certainly recommend hiring M State graduates as radiologic technologists. Currently in our Detroit Lakes location we have 18 employees who earned their Rad Tech degree at M State, including myself. There are numerous others hired within the West Region of Essentia Health. The opportunity to work closely with the M State program has allowed us to hire exceptional employees.

PARTNERS SPEAK

We are always excited to welcome M State Surgical Technology students to our operating room. They arrive onsite for their clinical experiences well-prepared and excited to learn. The ability to shadow in the OR early in the Surgical Technology program prepares them well for what they will encounter on clinicals. The instructors in the program both continue to work in the Surgical Technology field. Their depth of experience is invaluable to students beginning their careers. We value our partnership with M State and eagerly hire their graduates each year.

NURSING

I knew several people who went through the nursing program in Fergus Falls, and I really appreciated the opportunity to go through an affordable two-year RN program. My favorite part of my classes is getting to work with my classmates on school projects, presentations and volunteer projects. I have the best classmates! Being the oldest in a large family, I have always wanted to take care of and make a difference in the lives of people who are hurting. Choosing to major in nursing was an obvious choice. This spring, I am planning to travel to Angola to help friends who are serving in a hospital as a doctor and nurse practitioner. The hospital is located in a large city where one in three children do not survive to age 5. The need there is tremendous!

HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/CODING

I enrolled at M State due to the list of programs available. I enjoyed being able to talk to the instructors before signing up for a program. They asked questions of me and then gave me a path to follow, which was very helpful as I was working full time, taking care of my two girls and going to be attending school full time. When I was almost finished with my first degree in Medical Administration, we combined a few classes so I could finish my second degree in HIT/Coding.

There were a lot of long nights and weekends with barely any sleep, but I was determined to complete my two degrees, and I wasn’t letting myself down. Bonnie Peterson, my HIT instructor and advisor, had faith in me that I could do this. She helped me set up two positive internships, including one at the county hospital where I now work.

The educators at M State really know what is changing in the business world. For students thinking of attending M State, I’d suggest emailing advisors to ask what it’s like in the business world for the careers that interest you, what is the placement rate and what types of degrees are needed down the road for advancement.

I’d like to thank my advisors for the support given to me. They guided me during my career change and helped me through the program with ease. I am grateful to have had such awesome advisors in my life.

MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Initially I planned to pursue a degree in nursing, but after completing my CNA certification I realized that handson medical care was not the right fit for me. After doing a bit of research, I discovered M State offered a Medical Administrative Assistant program and thought that would suit me perfectly. M State gave me the initial education and understanding I needed to break into the medical administrative field. I especially enjoyed the program structure and feel that it also helped to have such knowledgeable staff! M State laid the foundation for me to pursue my bachelor’s degree in Health Services Administration.

I’m currently working as a financial counselor in a reproductive clinic, handling all aspects associated with the business office and meeting with patients to consult about their future financial responsibilities based on their treatment plans. I’ve also been employed in dermatology and ophthalmology clinics.
