welcome Welcome to the 2014 Cine Latino Film Festival! Films, fiestas, luchadores, live Mariachi music, visiting filmmakers, and more! Over these seven days centered around Dia de los muertos, we invite you to join us in celebration of all things Iberian and latinoamérican. The exciting range of films in this year’s festival represents eleven Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries from around the world, each with their own film industry and their own unique perspective on filmmaking. From the sprawling Venezuelan epic THE LIBERATOR to the beautiful and sophisticated Dominican Republic’s SAND DOLLARS to the moving Argentinian film REFUGIADO, these are films that cross borders, that entertain, educate, inform, and that represent countless unique cultures linked together by language.

I want to thank Viviana Garcia Besné and Gabriel Figuero Flores who curated IT COULD ONLY HAPPEN IN MEXICO, the festival’s showcase of Mexican cinema. The program offers us all the opportunity to explore Mexican cinema from a unique perspective, and take us on an exciting journey from the birth of Mexico’s film industry through the work done by today’s boundary-pushing auteurs. I also want to thank our extraordinary steering committee (see page 3) for their time, energy and enthusiasm. Cine Latino is tremendously enriched in every way by their participation. And finally, I want to thank you, our audience, members, donors and sponsors. We do it for you, and can’t do it without you...

Rising international star Édgar Ramírez (CARLOS) takes the lead in this dramatic story of Simón Bolívar (1783-1830), one of Latin America’s most inspirational and influential figures, and his lifelong quest for independence from Spain and autonomy for South America. Written by Timothy J. Closing Presentation

ESCOBAR: PARADISE LOST Andrea Di Stefano. Colombia/France/Spain/Belgium. 2014. Spanish/English. 120 min. Narrative. Pablo Escobar’s drug empire made him one of the wealthiest criminals in history. His brutal tactics were responsible for the deaths of thousands, but more than 20 years after his death in 1993, the Robin Hood-esque persona he cultivated for himself continues to render him a folk hero among some Colombians. Based on a true story, this complex character study offers us a glimpse into Escobar’s deadly appeal. The riveting debut feature from writer/director Andrea Di Stephano, ESCOBAR: PARADISE LOST stars Oscar®-winner Benicio Del Toro as Escobar and Josh Hutcherson (THE HUNGER GAMES) as a Canadian surfer who falls in love with Escobar’s beautiful niece, unwittingly entangling himself in the drug lord’s dangerous family business.

It all began almost a century ago, when films began to speak. Right there, Hollywood lost its Latino market.

12

IN N E P HAP

Audiences quickly tired of watching stories that didn’t speak to them, neither in their language nor in the topics that they covered. Mexican film pioneers rapidly discover that they had to make stories that appealed to the Mexican community if they wanted to be successful. And they did a hell of a job! In 1933 the first horror film was shot, LA LLORONA (page 14), based on one of the most popular Mexican legends that haunts Mexico´s streets since the conquest. People started to flock into movie theaters, eating tamales and burritos during the screenings, singing along with the top hits that also played on the radio, which producers had shrewdly incorporated into their films. Fiction and documentaries about the Mexican Revolution, stories about city life and nostalgia for rural life, about wealth and poverty; Mexico was discovering itself through these movies, and what an amazing time it must have been! Producers would sneak in among the audience to get a better idea of what it took to make a successful movie, to find out what made audiences laugh, cry, or sing. The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema arrived very quickly and against all odds. There were films for everybody, for impoverished farm hands, for the intellectuals, and even for Bracero immigrants. Mexican movies were not only seen by people in Mexico, but also proved successful among Latino communities around the world, and especially in the United States.

Watching these films can show us how the audience evolved in Mexico, from nationalism and folk legends to melodramas unspooling at the pace of gyrating Cuban hips, telling stories that Hollywood would never dare to tell, like VICTIMS OF SIN (page 15). The sixties arrives and the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema came to an end, but Mexican movies had a secret weapon: Santo, a masked wrestler who was introduced to films by producer Jorge García Besné, who at the time couldn’t afford a proper sci-fi movie and thought that his wrester friend could help him perform battles against the bad guys. Santo fast became a national hero, battling Vampire Women (page 14), Aliens, Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Werewolf… Was there no one Santo couldn’t beat? Mexico then faced the decadence of its film industry. People grew tired of Santo movies, racy comedies, and formulas that had run out of steam, as they started to demand better quality productions. Audiences no longer flocked to the theaters to watch the few Mexican films that were made in these years, although a new generation of filmmakers had started to make their mark with brought new ideas to the table started to make was making very few but good movies. “New Mexican Cinema” was on the table when Carlos Bolado made his debut in 1998 with UNDER CALIFORNIA...THE LIMIT OF TIME (page 15), showing audiences that art films can also be enjoyable. Over the past decade, Beto Gomez, who grew up in Sinaloa -- or the Mexican Sicily, as he calls it -- arrived on the scene to build a bridge between film critics and popular film attendance with his blockbuster hit SAVING PRIVATE PEREZ (page 16). He is the perfect example that films made in Mexico are a true labor of love, passion, and imagination. Viviana García Besne Founder Permanencia Voluntaria Film Archive

THE PROGRAMMERS Viviana Garcia Besné Viviana Garcia Besné is an award-winning director, writer and editor from Mexico and founder of the Permanenda Voluntaria Film Archive. Her grandfather, Jorge García Besné, produced the first films starring El Santo, the legendary silver-masked Mexican wrestler, and her grand-uncles Pedro A Calderón, José Luis Calderon and Guillermo Calderón were also prolific producers from the 1930’s to 1980’s. Gabriel Figueroa Flores Gabriel Figueroa Flores is an established photographer, author and filmmaker, known for directing A PORTRAIT OF DIEGO: THE REVOLUTIONARY GAZE (08), which traced the work of prominent Mexican painter Diego Rivera. He is the son of the acclaimed Mexican Cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa.

Pedro Armendariz are reunited on screen after some time. Their characters’ lives are endangered due to the intrigues of Governor Vidal who, having assassinated a trade union leader and friend of Octavio (Pedro Armendariz), desperately searches for incriminating documents hidden by Octavio. Filmed by Gabriel Figueroa in real locations rather than studios, Mexico City is both set and protagonist, making the atmosphere more credible. This is an example of how Mexican authors were able to adapt and develop a completely foreign genre to the Mexican reality by including its political connotations of corruption and by filming on location instead of inside a studio as in Hollywood productions. The entire plot unravels in one night, giving it a more sinister and mysterious touch.

SANTO VERSUS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN

Santo contra los vampiros Alfonso Corona Blake. 1962. Mexico.Spanish. 89 min. Narrative.

The fascination of La Llorona legend among Hispanics made it the right choice as the subject for the first Mexican horror film. With Spanish-speaking audiences demanding films that resonated with them, it was the perfect answer to Hollywood’s Draculas, Werewolves, and Mummies. La Llorona is an ominous figure, whether seen as the ghost of La Malinche driven to suicide by the loss of her child or as the gorgeous Mestiza that killed her offspring in a fit of rage, after learning of her Spanish lover’s betrayal. La Llorona, the legend says, returns to slay the first-born son in every generation of her mean lover’s family. The movie’s plot develops in those three distinct periods: the Conquest, the Colonia, and modern times; each segment has an atmosphere of its own. The gloomy, surreal sequences in which the ghost creeps up from corpses or hovers aimlessly while uttering her spine-chilling howl “¡Ay, mis hijos…!” make the film a masterpiece. -Rogelio Agrasánchez Film historian, Agrasánchez Film Archive

Luchador Wrestler Black Boy MN attending 11/2. When I was a child I believed the movies. I thought El Santo was real. Movies with female vampires were fashionable then due to “Et mourir de plaisir” (Roger Vadim 1960) and since in México we always adapt things to our taste, just like we put chili on a hot dog, why wouldn’t we have our own flesh and blood Mexican hero, El Santo, live an impossible adventure with sensual and voluptuous female vampires, played by Lorena Velázquez and Maria Duval. This film does not need a lot of explanation. It may seem a simple idea but it was not, and its explosive combination made it one of greatest box-office hits of its time. Without my knowing it, this period of Mexican film laid the foundation for my future as a filmmaker. It even taught me how to defend myself from life’s blows using imagination and reality. True, almost always during intermission I would fight with some masked kid from another neighborhood. But as soon as the theater went dark all the kids returned to our dreams of some day being like El Santo, driving a convertible and conquering the most beautiful women.

Luchador Black Boy MN visitar 11/2.

UNDER CALIFORNIA: THE LIMIT OF TIME Bajo California: el límite del tiempo Carlos Bolado Muñoz. 1998. Mexico. Spanish/English. 96 min. Narrative. Because of the constant migration of Mexico’s population, rediscovering one’s identity and understanding one’s connection with the homeland are some of the most constant presences in Mexican film. Damián, a Chicano artist, has an automobile accident resulting in the death of his pregnant wife, something that leads him to question his own existence. In ‘Under California’ we have a voyage to the origins, to the past of someone who knows more about his land from references than from experience. While social and technological progress can be found in the big cities, it’s in the small communities where we rediscover the meaning of such things. Images of culture, be it cave paintings or instant photographs, travel with Damian on his search for redemption, and for the limits of memory and time. -Dan Campos Podcaster, blogger y comentarista cinematográfico MON 11/3 3:30PM ST. VICTIMS OF SIN features vibrant dance numbers, a sensually-saturated solo by Afro-Cuban musician Rita Montaner—in a scene that would have been unthinkable in a Hollywood production—and an astonishing sequence in which cabaret workers revolt against labor exploitation, literally bringing down the house. While rebelliousness and denunciation are at the heart of this picture, a more conservative strand also runs through it: the movie includes a public service announcement on the virtues of baby formula, a moralistic ending and sanctimonious tone that seems at odds with its powerful images of female defiance and unleashed desires. These competing modalities paint an ambivalent picture of Mexico’s institutions, legal processes, and ultimately, its moral world. The exquisite cinematography provides some of the most memorable sequences in cinema’s archive.

From the Producers of EL SECRETO DE TUS OJOS (THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES).

TO FOOL A THIEF

TO KILL A MAN

Vino para robar

Matar a un hombre

Ariel Winograd. 2013. Argentina. Spanish. 105 min. Narrative.

Alejandro Fernández Almendras. 2014. Chile/France. Spanish. 82 min. Narrative.

In this high-stakes caper comedy – in the vein of OCEAN’S ELEVEN – master thief Sebastian discovers that the Aztec mask he stole during one of his heists is a fake, and that his rival, Mariana, snatched the real one. Sebastian pursues Mariana to Mendoza, where they are both made an offer they cannot refuse: work together to retrieve an 1845 bottle of Bordeaux from a high-security vault.

Chile’s submission to the 2015 Oscars. Hardworking family man Jorge is just barely making ends meet. When he gets mugged by Kalule, a neighborhood delinquent, Jorge’s son decides to confront Kalule, only to get himself shot in the process. Sentenced to a scant 2 years in prison for the offense, Kalule, released and now intent on revenge, goes on the warpath, terrorizing Jorge’s family. With his wife, son and daughter at the mercy of a thug, Jorge has no choice but to take justice into his own hands, and live with the emotional and psychological consequences.
