KEEN Card Exemplar

Dr. Daugherty’s KEEN Card on Energy Projects with Community/Industry Participation is an MSOE Exemplar Dr. Daugherty received two Mini-Grants in 2020 and then worked with the CREATE Institute to set up community and industry partners for his courses. He subsequently published a few KEEN Cards to share his work, below is one of these cards.

At first glance, the card supports Entrepreneurial Minded Learning (EML).

› Section A: Entrepreneurial Mindset (EM) links to course content (i.e., curiosity, connections).

› Section B: Engineering skillset in design, opportunity, and impact enhance EM development

› Section C: EML turns ideas into actions. Students are actively engaged with industry or community partners to address an issue with societal benefits and value.

Daugherty’s EM Journey

Dr. Daugherty is an active Engineering Unleashed Member with 13 KEEN cards (as of October 2022). He creates learning and development opportunities to enhance student success and promote the MSOE Mindset, which includes KEEN’s Entrepreneurial Mindset. Since CREATE opened in 2019, Dr. Daugherty has participated in at least 19 professional development opportunities related to MSOE Mindset and EM development, including the KEEN National Conference and Engineering Unleashed Faculty Development.

MARK DAUGHERTY is an expert in advanced energy, research and development, and entrepreneurship and startups. He is an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MSOE.

areas of expertise include cell biology and biomolecular engineering.

Dr. Hassemer’s KEEN Card on Our Plastic World is an MSOE Exemplar. Dr. Hassemer integrated EM into her course after attending EUFD and subsequently published a KEEN Card to share her work.

At first glance, the card provides a clear connection to Entrepreneurial Minded Learning (EML)

› Section A: Entrepreneurial Mindset (EM) explicitly links to the course content Brief descriptions accompany the connections on how the module supports the 3C’s and associated outcomes.

› Section B: Engineering skillset in design, opportunity, and impact enhance EM development

› Section C: EML turns ideas into actions. Students are actively engaged as they determine how to clean up the accumulating ocean plastic using EM.

Hassemer’s EM Journey

Dr. Hassemer is an EM advocate. Since CREATE opened in 2019, Dr. participated in at least 36 professional development opportunities Mindset and EM development, including the KEEN National Conference and Engineering Unleashed Faculty Development In addition, she led an MSOE faculty development session during the 2020-2021 academy year: “Integrating the Entrepren into Courses.”

ERYN HASSEMER’S She is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Chemistry at MSOE.
