I hope that this book will help inspire Mums and Dads to sit and spend time interacting with their kids. You never know (Mum/ Dad) – you too might just learn something new about this sport which has been a big part of my life. I have been very fortunate to have met some great people during my life. I have learnt that great people are often right in front of your nose. These are the people you turn to in time of need and they’re usually the first to volunteer assistance, they’re the ones who are always there to give advice and often the ones who just never give up on their dreams. I hope you too are fortunate enough in your lifetime to know people like this!

Did you know?...That it’s desirable for a Funny Car to race with its front wheels inches off the ground for about the first 200 feet of the run? This ensures proper weight transfer to the rear wheels, a crucial part of a good launch and quick run.

The Sainty Top Fuel dragster burns a mixture that is 90 percent nitromethane and 10 percent alcohol. Nitro methane has less energy content than petrol. But nitro is an oxygen-rich compound that requires less air to burn, so the engine can consume more of it, thereby producing greater power. The 36 nozzles in the intake tract are always open, dumping about 5 gallons of fuel in a 4-second run.

Huge rear wing creates a massive down force of some 8000lbs for the rear and 1800lbs for the front, helping to adhere the vehicle to the track.

Goodyear slicks on the rear are 18.5 inches (47cm) wide and nearly 9.5 feet (3 meters) in circumference. Dependant upon track and atmospheric conditions, rear tyre pressure is between 6 and 9 pounds per square inch. Front tyres are 2.5 inches (6.25cm) wide and 22 inches (56cm) in diameter and are between 70 and 100psi.

A Top Fuel Dragster can exceed 280 miles per hour (450 km/h) in just 660 feet (200 m). This acceleration subjects the driver to an average force of about 4.0 G over the duration of the race. The maximum G Force space Shuttle astronauts have experienced is 3.0Gs.

The horsepower of the Sainty nitro burning engine is not known - there isn’t a dynamometer that can handle it. It is estimated at 8000HP, more than the first 6 rows of a V8 Supercar grid.

Rear brake rotors measure Approximately 11 inches (28cm) in diameter and are made from carbon fibre, activated via a hand lever in the cockpit and utilized only on the rear axle. The car’s primary braking system is a pair of parachutes that can produce up to 6 negative G forces of stopping power. A direct opposite to the G forces felt by the driver at launch.

WOW!

Terry will accelerate the dragster from a standstill to 100 miles per hour (160km/h) in just under a second (less than one third the time required by a production Porsche 911 Turbo to reach 60 miles per hour (97 km/h).

The Sainty Top Fuel Dragster chassis is fabricated from 300 feet of 4130 chrome moly. The nose, rear wing and front wing assembly are made from carbon fibre. The multiple piece bodies can be formed of aluminium or carbon fibre. Maximum wheelbase for a Top Fuel Dragster is 300 inches.

The Roots Helix 14-71 supercharger, that force feeds the engine with air is so massive that it takes a whopping

700 hp to run it.

There are no computer controlled functions on the car at all!. The crews can log data such as exhaust temperatures, fuel pressure, fuel flow, crank shaft speed, rear axle speed and supercharger pressure.

The “Blind Obsession” Funny Car features a lightweight fibreglass replica of a 1996 Pontiac Firebird. Rear wings and spill plates help to create down force to help keep the car “glued” to the track at high speed. Chassis is constructed of nearly 180 feet of chrome moly tubing and features a 6 point roll cage for driver protection. The Funny Car has a maximum wheelbase of 125 inches.

“Blind Obsession” is powered by the Sainty 540CI 3 Valve V8, making approximately 3000+ horsepower. Driver, Mark Hinchelwood wears a DJ Safety -20 5 layer NOMEX fire suit, gloves and boots to protect him from any possible fire situations. The team use a 6 point safety harness to hold him securely in the seat during a pass. A HANS Device is also used.

WOW!

A 3 speed gearbox is used and air shifted between 8500 and 9000 Revs. The PSI Screw Blower is spinning at 22,500 RPM when the engine RPM reaches 10,0000 and provides 58 pounds of boost to the hungry motor

If you need any help on with the questions - head on over to the Sainty Race Team pit area and ask Terry, Mark or one of the crew guys to help with your answers. See page 14 if you get stuck on a question. What is the wheelbase of the Sainty Top Fuel Dragster? What body is the Blind Obsession Funny Car ? How many wheels does the Sainty Transporter have? What is the Estimated horsepower of the Sainty Dragster? What 2 types of fuel does the Sainty Dragster use? What is the Sainty V8 engine’s Cubic inch capacity?

Ever wonder how “Funny Cars” got their name? Well back in the late 1960s racers began modifying the wheelbase of there vehicles. Moving the front and rear suspension forward to improve weight distribution, body modifications including cutting holes in the bonnet accept superchargers or injectors the cars became funny lookin’. Legend has it that a race track announcer coined the phrase when he looked out at the staging lanes and claimed “Here come those Funny Cars!”

There are plenty of things to write about as Drag Racing is such a spectacular sport. Noise, flames, smoke, wheel stands and meeting the drivers. You may want to write about your favourite car or bike. What car went the fastest during the event? Who is your favourite driver and what class do they compete in? If you watched the mechanics in the pits, what impressed you the most?

Here are some words and terms used in Drag Racing that may help you write about your time at the event

Hey kids, put a few words together describing your adventures at a Drag Racing event

THE 561st PSALM After years of racing and many a blow, The decision was made that the Chevy must go, ‘twas a faithful old beast, yet they say over stressed, But most of the time gave more than the rest.

Stan Sainty

The drama all over, a resolve to create, Five-sixty-one inches, all alloy V8 Quad cams, four valves, and a Y block to use Thus for Chevy or Chrysler, not be confused Conception completed, gestation began, But this was no task for ordinary man, Around him Stan gathered the best he could find, Pattern makers and Casters, of talent sublime. Great effort ensued through day and night, And long debate to decide what was right, Castings were made and machined as a test Then sawn into pieces and laid long to rest.

Norm Sainty

Change after change saw the infant take shape But it grew ever better as does natures grape Thousands of hours, of blood, sweat and tears Saw the beauty come forth and allay all their fears The father caressed it and primed it with glee Then said “Well my child, will you fire for me?” A sound thump on the stern and it roared into life Yes the “SAINTY” was born that hot August night As to the future, some say it remote, So to finish this discourse, we give you this quote “Many find fault but have little to show Cause it takes a real Aussie to give it a go” Written by Norm Sainty and John Williams
