harlie Chaplin took a gamble when he went to Hollywood. After all, he’d built a useful reputation in the music halls and could look forward to a long career on the stage. Moving pictures offered an uncertain future. Was it really worth the risk? But Chaplin took the plunge: the rest is history. This painstakingly reconstructed and restored 4 DVD set containing 34 films does more than show his movie apprenticeship: it demonstrates exactly why Chaplin achieved such rapid, overwhelming fame. Put bluntly, it was because he was better than everyone else on screen. From his very first appearance in Making a Living, his clowning is more sophisticated, more inventive and just plain funnier than other Keystone players. Mack Sennett’s movies were lowest-common denominator slapstick but Chaplin plays even the crudest gag with a compelling grace. It wasn’t until Chaplin started to direct that talent blossomed into genius. The change in quality is both dramatic and near instant. The Property Man was his third film as director and his first masterpiece. The familiar Keystone chaos is there, but it

This BFI Box Set shows Chaplin’s talent blossoming into genius results from a tightly controlled story rather than casual violence. This is Chaplin evolving. Although the Tramp character makes his appearance early (in Kid Auto Races at Venice), Chaplin hadn’t settled on him as his only role: he plays toffs and drunkards too. Even the Tramp is not quite the figure he would later become. He’s a rougher figure, an agent of chaos rather than a loveable rogue. Chaplin was also experimenting with form, moving away from eruptions of anarchy to more sophisticated formats, such as the comedy of errors of His Trysting Places. He’d make better films, but there’s authentic joy here, a young man exploding with ideas and seeing what he could do. By the end of the period documented here, Chaplin was on his way to becoming the most famous man in the world. That is another story. Let’s hope it will be told in another set as good as this one. New DVDs of the Year

Following last month’s top vintage DVDs of 2010, we now come to the main event – our dozen favourite new DVDs of 2010. They’re an unusually strong set, both in tone and quality – we recommend that you buy those you haven’t seen immediately! In particular, it is beyond doubt that it has been an excellent year for world cinema with both A Prophet and The White Ribbon guaranteed to be talked about for many years to come. The films were chosen by MovieMail staff and contributors with the aim of presenting the finest new releases of 2010.

An Education

The Ghost

Lone Scherfig

Roman Polanski

Carey Mulligan charmed us all as the 1960s schoolgirl who finds romance and the wide grown-up world in the arms of a flashy older man. Giving the performance of the year, Mulligan utterly inhabits the role of a girl teetering on the edge of adulthood – with all the vulnerability and naivety that entails. CH

With illegal wars, dead weapons inspectors, deals done at trattorias and ‘that’ smile, ex-PM Tony Blair’s life could be an airport thriller. So Polanski turned it into one with deep bite and cast Remington Steele himself – a permatanned Pierce Brosnan, as the Blair-a-like. Flirting with real life figures is rarely this much dark fun. DP

Mia Hansen-Love

Marrying the resources of a huge Hollywood movie with an intelligent arthouse sensibility is something that regrettably few directors get the chance to do. Applaud Christopher Nolan then for creating a jaw-dropping sci-fi spectacle that plays out like a blockbuster devised by Jorge Luis Borges. DH

Luca Guadagnino Tilda Swinton merely has to be in a film to cause a stir but give her a melodramatically framed canvas and she soars. I Am Love doesn’t so much tell the story of an unravelling marriage as show it in all its sweeping destruction, accompanied by a suitably operatic score from John Adams to match. DVD: £7.99 Save £8

Based on the life of the arthouse film producer Humbert Balsan, this is a highly accomplished work from its 29-year-old director. Partly a revealing glimpse into the world of film production and partly a captivating family drama, the film has wise and useful things to say about family, endeavor and death. DH France | 2009 | FMS | 110 min | subt | Cert 15 | # 61789 | RRP £15.99

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Stieg Larsson’s bestseller gets a fitting big-screen adaptation with this complex tale of murder, abuse and corruption. A Prophet

Samson and Delilah

A Single Man

Jacques Audiard

Warwick Thornton

Tom Ford

Topping his own brilliant brew of musician and thug in The Beat That My Heart Skipped, Jacques Audiard threw mystic and criminal together in A Prophet to concoct a gritty prison drama that dared to dream whilst the blood flowed. Shake in some volatile racial tension and the result justly made best of lists everywhere. DP

Warwick Thornton emerged unknown from the outback with this (critically) hot ‘love redeems all’ debut. Mostly wordless, this jagged romance of glances and shared experience in an Aborigine community takes its characters to the brink and back with a surprising amount of social bite. DP

First-time director Tom Ford is clearly a talent to watch judging by this adaptation of a Christopher Isherwood novella. With a perfectly-pitched emotional tone, we follow Colin Firth’s University professor over one day as he struggles to come to terms with the deal of his lover. Firth’s mesmerising performance is his finest to date. DH

The White Ribbon

Shane Meadows

Pete Docter

Michael Haneke

Meadows fulfils all his promise and more with this vision of our society’s hopeless rejects who aren’t hopeless at all as humans. Building understanding and empathy between middle class opinionators and these outcasts is the finest of enterprises. Fortunately it’s also entertaining and uplifting. AH

Proving that decent storytelling, character and talking dogs never go out of fashion, critics rightfully compare Pixar’s film to the height of Disney’s 1940s glory. The film managed to crack tears from the stone-hearted cynics at a screening in Cannes within the first ten minutes. What chance do the rest of us have! DP

This is superlative filmmaking. Haneke’s study of cruelty, adult hypocrisy and mysterious events in a German village in 1913 sends dark reverberations through the century that we know follows the film’s end. And what a joy to see a beautifully photographed new film coming to the screen in lustrous monochrome! GH

The War You Don’t See John Pilger

Stylised action comedy from Edgar ‘Shaun of the Dead’ Wright, which sees 22-year-old slacker Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) fall for the gorgeous Ramona Flowers, whose seven evil ex-boyfriends stand in his way, each one more malicious than the last and all equally intent on obliter2 discs; ating her new love interest! Following The War on Democracy, Pilger’s new film is a timely investigation into the media’s role in war, which traces the history of ‘embedded’ and independent reporting from the carnage of World War I to the current war in Afghanistan. But who is the real enemy today? Pilger asks ‘Do journalists beat the drums of war, then normalise the unthinkable?

One of the funniest things on TV for a long while, The Trip sees Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon reunited for a culinary tour of six restaurants in the north of England, which Coogan has been commissioned to review. Exclusive to Moviemail! Bedlam

Mark Robson Bedlam: an 18th century lunatic asylum whose name aroused dread. Boris Karloff plays its malevolent director who takes a keen pleasure in cruelly abusing his inmates. Then an actress companion of the asylum’s patron pays a visit, and outraged by his barbarity, tries to initiate reforms – leading her to be locked up there. Produced by the legendary B-movie producer Val Lewton, this was one of his best, with the atmosphere set by the use of Hogarth’s engravings as transitional devices. This is intelligent horror with a dozen fearsome jolts. USA | 1946 | ODEON | 79 min | Cert PG Item # 63456 | RRP £9.99 | Released 25th October

The Locket John Brahm

Robert Mitchum, Laraine Day, Brian Aherne. Before his wedding a bridegroom discovers a different side to his bride-to-be when a stranger recounts a tale of deceit, theft and murder. What follows is a labyrinthine dream of obsession, played out in a series of flashbacks that might just be the ravings of an unsound mind. Brahm’s distinctive RKO picture is a deliciously odd affair – two parts melodrama to one part film noir – that aficionados of baroque Hollywood will relish. The script is overwrought in the best possible way, the décor is ornate, the staging stylish and it’s garnished by intense performances. USA | 1946 | ODEON | 85 min | Cert PG Item # 63459 | RRP £9.99 | Released 1st November

The Racket

John Cromwell Given that the director Nicholas Ray worked uncredited on John Cromwell’s film noir, and that one of the screenwriters was WR Burnett, it’s hardly surprising that this is one of the most intriguing entries in the genre. Robert Ryan plays the brutal gangster who has government and law-enforcement officials in his pocket. Those who can’t be bought are ruthlessly rubbed out. But the arrival of Robert Mitchum’s incorruptible police captain spells danger, especially when he persuades Lizabeth Scott’s sexy nightclub singer to testify against him. A fascinatingly bleak, fatalistic picture of corruption reaching to the upper echelons of political power. USA | 1951 | ODEON | 89 min | Cert PG Item # 63455 | RRP £9.99 | Released 25th October
