The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness Mami Sunada

Documentary about the Japanese film company Studio Ghibli and three of the men behind its success – directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. The film provides a fascinating insight into the studio’s success by following the men at work for a year during the production of Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises (2013) and Takahata’s The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013) and capturing them in conversation with their teams. ‘For animation lovers, peering inside the walls of Studio Ghibli is like being granted a guided tour of Santa’s workshop.’ – Variety Japan | 2013 | Cert PG | 1hr 55 | Subtitiles Item# 150377 | RRP £19.99 | Out Now

ichard Linklater is a master of observational fictional filmmaking that offers insights into lives as they are lived. His breakthrough film Slacker (1991) defined a generation, following a colourful array of misfits over the course of 24 hours. Dazed and Confused (1993) also wrings featurelength action from a single day, in a semiautobiographical rites-of-passage tale. In the Before… trilogy (Before Sunrise, 1995, Before Sunset, 2004 and Before Midnight, 2013) time closes in on a couple at three brief moments of romantic adventure or crisis at nine-year intervals. Even the broad comedy School of Rock (2003) gives generous screen time to its young cast, exploring what they bring to their roles from their own experiences. Boyhood applies the same tight focus, but on a much vaster scale, bringing together a core of actors for a few days each year for twelve years. Moment by moment, Linklater pieces together a wholly believable snapshot of a single family as a brother and sister grow and develop from vulnerable under-10s to college kids striking out for independence.

A satisfying glimpse at growing up in the first part of the twenty-first century. The cumulative vignettes powerfully portray the family’s everyday odyssey through break-ups, teenage trial and error, selfdetermination and discovery. As the years spin by, the focus shifts subtly towards the boy Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and Mom Olivia (Patricia Arquette), culminating in her despair at the unrelenting march of time when Mason leaves home. In support, Ethan Hawke as Mason Sr. and the director’s daughter Lorelei Linklater as resilient sibling Samantha, strike a convincing, natural note. Coltrane’s physical transformation is visually dramatic, but we’re also aware of smaller changes in the appearance and outlook of the adults that remind us how quickly life threatens to pass us by. This intimate and affectionate film recently won Best International Film at the British Independent Film Awards.

Fascination

Also known as The White Huntress, this African adventure follows a group of British settlers travelling to Masai country in Kenya. Starring Robert Urquhart (The Curse of Frankenstein), John Bentley and Susan Stephenson (Pacific Destiny). Shot on location in Kenya with an epic sequence in which the sleeping heroine must battle a giant python, which slithers across her neck.

Howard Hawks’ fast-talking screwball comedy is a breathless battle of the sexes. Cary Grant’s newspaper editor Walter Burns will do anything in his power to prevent his star reporter and ex-wife Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) from remarrying. The paper has been campaigning to reprieve a convicted killer on death row, and the possibility of a scoop that could unseat the city’s corrupt mayor proves impossible to resist. The story hots up when the killer escapes and holes up in the court newsroom, amplifying the chaos. The quickfire gags and whip-smart insults are a miracle of comic dialogue and timing, while Ralph Bellamy as fiancé Bruce Baldwin is a bemused counterpoint to Grant and Russell’s force-of-nature bickering. The second of four screen adaptations of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s hit Broadway play The Front Page, the genius of Hawks’ production was to add the gender wars. Billy Wilder’s commendable 1974 version starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon restored Hildy’s manhood but doesn’t quite match the virility.

he name Frank Launder twice leaps out from the credits in this third selection of British musicals from the 1930s. Later famed for his partnership with Sidney Gilliat, Launder contributed to the screenplays of Monty Banks’s For the Love of Mike (1932) and Harry Hughes’s Facing the Music (1933). The former was adapted from one of HF Maltby’s `plays with tunes’ and stars Bobby Howes as a secretary who tries to win the heart of heiress Constance Shotter by stealing the power of attorney held by the guardian she no longer trusts. The game seems up when Howes is caught in the act by private detective Arthur Riscoe. But he turns out to be an old school chum who helps Howes crack the safe. The latter was based on an idea by Gilliat and was scripted by Launder in tandem with star Stanley Lupino, whose hapless press agent hopes to impress Nancy Burne by getting her opera-singing aunt (José Collins) some much-needed publicity by having her priceless jewels stolen during a performance. Each of the remaining films stars a celebrated continental tenor. Ex-cantor

From playful romantic comedies to variety extravaganzas… Joseph Schmidt was known as ‘the Jewish Caruso’ and he excels in My Song Goes Round the World (1934), a remake of a German confection that reunited Schmidt with director Richard Oswald and co-star Charlotte Ander. He achieves genuine pathos as the diminutive singer who is forced to wear a clown costume to appear on stage with his friend. John Loder. He proves no luckier in love than Richard Tauber in Paul L. Stein’s Heart’s Desire (1935), who is plucked from a Viennese beer garden by English socialite Leonora Corbett, who is convinced he is the ideal lead for composer Carl Harbord’s new opera. Stein slyly satirises aristocratic cultural pretension, while making Tauber realise he was better off with sweetheart Kathleen Kelly and his four-piece band. But, most significantly, he gives the songs a psychological relevance, which was very unusual for British musicals of the time.

I’m All Right Jack Recommended Director: John Boulting Starring: Ian Carmichael, Peter Sellers, Terry Thomas, Richard Attenborough, Miles Malleson Released: 19th January Extras: Digitally Restored Item# 124601 / 156303 | UK | 1959 | Cert U | 1hr 40

The Boulting Brothers’ glorious satire of post-war industrial relations marked a key moment in Peter Sellers’ career. His portrayal of bolshy, one-tracked shop steward Fred Kite won him a BAFTA and focused his attentions away from mimicry and one-liners in favour of more nuanced character-driven roles. His earnest, deadpan delivery stands out in a sea of slapstick – and produces deep belly laughs. A sequel to Private’s Progress, Ian Carmichael, Terry-Thomas, Richard Attenborough and Dennis Price reprise their roles as upper-class twit Stanley Windrush and officer-class schemers Major Hitchcock, Sidney De Vere Cox and Bertram Tracepurcel as they each attempt to carve out new careers on civvy street. The self-serving hypocrisy of both unions and moneymen are lampooned with admirable even-handedness. The film still has much to say about anything-for-profit commercialisation, social frustration, personal politics and the creaking vestiges of the British class system.

The Keeper of Lost Causes Mikkel Nørgaard

Nordic noir thriller directed by Mikkel Nørgaard and starring Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares. Reassigned to Department Q after an accident leaves his partner dead, Carl begins to obsess over the disappearance of a female politician…

Swiss writer-director Stefan Haupt adopts a half-and-half docudrama strategy all but abandoned in the cinema since Warren Beatty’s Reds. The project was evidently born out of a series of interviews Haupt conducted with a pair of Zurich-based partners: former teacher Ernst Ostertag and the German-born Röbi Rapp, a hairdresser and drag act, who met in the 1950s under the auspices of the titular underground organisation for gay men. Haupt’s bright and aerated documentary frames two men who’ve been together for over 50 years, seen the worst of the persecution come and go, and now feel entirely confident about putting it all on the record. Rapp, Ostertag and their fellow travellers have many juicy tales to tell about the methods used to circumvent social restrictions. We learn of the Friday-night Lufthansa charter that carried gay Germans into the marginally less forbidding city for their weekend revels; we learn that the Circle’s newsletter used to print its filthiest stories in English, on the grounds that none of the censors could read it.

Werner Herzog

Herzog is one of the greatest figures of New German Cinema and was once named ‘the most important film director alive’ by François Truffaut.

Aguirre, Wrath of God

Werner Herzog directs this study of megalomania, set in 16th Century Peru. In the year 1560, a Spanish expedition crosses the Peruvian Sierras in search of the legendary Inca city of El Dorado. A power struggle within the group leads to its deputy seizing control in bloody fashion, his desire to set up his own kingdom threatening to destroy them all… Germany | 1972 | Cert PG | 1hr 33 | Subtitles Item# 163670 | RRP £17.99 | 19th January

Fitzcarraldo

Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald dreams of building an opera house in the middle of the Peruvian jungle. To finance his project he attempts to persuade the rubber business to extend into the jungle, and concocts a plan that involves moving his steamship over a mountain. In making his film of the visionary’s adventures, director Werner Herzog famously refused to use special effects and insisted instead on actually transporting a steamship over the mountains. ietrich Brüggemann charts a latter-day teenager’s passage through the ranks of an extreme form of Catholicism. From the outside this film might appear dourly proscriptive and resistible. Once you’re in it, however, it reveals itself to be a complex piece, rich in dramatic ambiguity: we’re never quite certain whether Lea van Acken’s Maria Göttler is following the one true path or stepping off the beaten track and onto the road to ruin. It’s clear that the church to which Maria subscribes practises Christianity pursued to an extreme. In the opening tableau, set up to recall The Last Supper, a priest schools his young charges in the various stages of Christian enlightenment; it all sounds reasonable enough to anybody with a C-of-E background, but Brüggemann allows the scene to go on long enough for the priest to start fulminating about the dangers of Satanic music, movies, and – unexpectedly – even Satanic cake. From a family day out, Maria’s fraught relationship with her mother (Franziska Weisz) becomes clear; a conversation with a classmate betrays the Society’s guilt-ridden, mistrustful attitude towards women; and eventually, we come to understand that the younger brother

This German drama was a prize-winner at the Berlin Film Festival, 2014. we see crying earlier has medical problems. Still, in taking Maria’s own beliefs entirely seriously, Stations of the Cross aligns its heroine with the lapsed nun in Bruno Dumont’s Hadewijch and Sandra Hüller’s agonised zealot in Requiem – and, at the last, even the miracle-working heroine of Dreyer’s Ordet, which is some sign of how much the filmmaker has succeeded in setting one to thinking about the nature of faith. Clearly Maria is being positioned by her elders as the postergirl for a new, ‘pure’ form of Catholicism, but in van Acken’s quietly affecting performance, she’s more sincere than sucker. She’s chosen to follow this path, no matter that it means having to give up Facebook and cake – and yet the final act insists that she’s also still a child, with all the earthly vulnerability that implies. Around her, Brüggemann floats a compelling idea, and then literally follows it through: what would happen to a 21st century girl, if she elected to live her life like a saint?

A decorated veteran of the Great War, Walter Summers directed several powerful battlefield reconstructions, including Ypres (1925) and Mons (1926). However, this account of two crucial naval encounters was far more ambitious, as it combined archive footage, model work and recreations staged with the aid of the Royal Navy. With John Buchan (of 39 Steps fame) among the screenwriters, the storyline follows the efforts of Admiral Sturdee to avenge the defeat at Coronel off the Chilean coast at the hands of Vice-Admiral Graf von Spee. Compelling though the maritime action is, this also has moments of poignant intimacy. The efforts of the volunteer force to defend Port Stanley are rather more pantomimic. While a cunning manoeuvre wins the day, the close-up of von Spee realising his fate tempers the quiet pride at British courage with a noble eschewal of jingoistic triumphalism.

David Fincher’s breakout hit Se7en climaxed with a husband being presented, to his and our eternal horror, with the head of his beloved. Gone Girl, Fincher’s adaptation of the Gillian Flynn bestseller, imagines something far worse: what if you were presented with the contents of your lover’s head, and thereby found out what they really thought of you? Nick and Amy Dunne (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike) are rich white smoothies, people who buy bedsheets with threadcounts worthy of their lovemaking, and are on the verge of celebrating their fifth gloriously smug year together when Amy inexplicably goes AWOL. From the kiss that sealed the couple’s marriage proposal, Fincher cuts to chief suspect Nick having his cheek swabbed for DNA, then follows up by introducing a rattling shout of ‘louder!’ from the galleries as hubby makes his televised plea for wifey’s swift return. Here’s your poster quote: Gone Girl is the year’s most uncomfortable date movie. When did we all start getting this neurotic about relationships?

David Cronenberg’s latest won Julianne Moore Best Actress at Cannes. Rightly so – it’s his most fascinating work in years. Making movies about movies has a funny way of turning the camera back on a director. Though they seem like extended in-jokes, these films are often their makers’ most personal projects. Here, Cronenberg returns to Hollywood two decades after The Fly, only to find a horrifying vacuum he approaches with typical scientific rigour. Throughout, Cronenberg deploys his camera like an electron microscope, constantly refocusing on lost souls too shrivelled to register in conventional shot. Bruce Wagner’s gossipy script presents us with a number of archetypes: an egomaniacal leading lady, her therapist (John Cusack), a scarred ingénue, and a limo driver (Robert Pattinson) working on his script. Few filmmakers have more comprehensively dissected the dark hearts behind the bright lights.

The Tamarind Seed

The sight of composer John Barry and title designer Maurice Binder among the credits of this spy thriller might set pulses racing among James Bond aficionados. But this is closer to John Le Carré than Ian Fleming. Whitehall aide Julie Andrews is holidaying in Barbados to get over her affair with a government minister. Intelligence officer Anthony Quayle is convinced that Russian attaché Omar Sharif is more interested in recruiting Andrews than romancing her. A game of cat and mouse ensues that also involves minister Dan O’Herlihy, his adulterous wife Sylvia Syms and her lover, Bryan Marshall. Blake Edwards is less interested in the shadowy activities of the spooks than in how ordinary people behave when they become trapped in a web of intrique. He focuses on how Andrews and Sharif care for each other more than matters of national security. Andrews had played a similar role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain (1966), but seems much more confident in this disarming companion piece.

Miranda Richardson and Anna Chancellor are two upper-class snobs trying to out-do each other by whatever means necessary in this new BBC adaptation of the classic novels by E. F. Benson. This three-part comedy-of-manners, set in the quaint village of Tilling during the 1930’s, is resplendent with its richly crafted colour palette designed to heighten the senses. The witty script, penned by Steven Pemberton (who also stars) presents eccentric inhabitants with exquisite manners in a world seething with catty gossip, intrigue, petty one-up-manship and very bad behaviour! All is tranquil in Tilling – but not for long. Queen bee Miss Elizabeth Mapp welcomes a new tenant into her beloved home, Mallards. The imperious Miss Emmeline Lucas, Lucia to her friends, is in Tilling for the summer. Initially Mapp parades her new trophy around town. But Lucia is equally adept at social domination and quickly dethrones Mapp from the top of the Tilling tree. A seething Mapp seeks revenge, much to the delight of the rest of Tillingites. A series must surely be in the pipeline.

Abominable Dr. Phibes

Following Borgen in edging Nordic drama away from murder mysteries and into saga noir, this compelling study of familial dysfunction brings the traditions of the 19th-century novel to the tele-serial. Like Thomas Vinterburg’s Festen, the focus falls on the price children pay for their parents’ indiscretions, as siblings Trine Dyrholm, Carsten Bjørnlund and Mikkel Boe Følsgaard not only discover that their famously free-spirited artist mother Kirsten Olesen gave up a child for adoption during her 1960s heyday, but also that she has made the unsuspecting Marie Bach Hansen her chief beneficiary. Seething with secrets, lies and bitter resentment, the individual storylines become more knotted and claustrophobic as they develop and Olesen learns to cope with her new-found wealth and status. This could easily have lapsed into Dynasty-style soap. But creator Maya Ilsøe expertly sustains the level of involving revelation, while her dialogue is as sharp as the direction by a quintet that includes awardwinning actress Pernilla August.
