P U R S U I N G H E R P A S S I O N S EN T R EPR EN EU R S H I P SHEILA CONNELL

Owner, Shades of Sleep & Accessories, Inc. When Sheila Connell hit her now-or-never moment after 30 years as a paralegal, she seized the opportunity and never looked back. Sheila pursued her interest in interior decorating at Mount Royal University, pairing the program with MRU’s Entrepreneurship Certificate before establishing Shades of Sleep & Accessories Inc. in 2010. Standing in the sun-filled foyer of her Inglewood store, Sheila says, “The Entrepreneurship courses fine-tuned the process: How do I take this idea and make it work? What skills do I need to open this business? And then there’s understanding your customer, understanding products, sourcing quality products and finding out what your

customers’ needs are. It makes you stop and think: Is this a worthwhile project? The program helps focus your vision and see if it can be a profitable business.” Since opening Shades of Sleep — which evolved from custom bedding to a range of luxurious goods related to a good night’s sleep — Sheila has drawn on the knowledge she gained in the Entrepreneurship program to navigate Calgary’s challenging economic environment. “Your business should always change to meet the needs of the customers, while staying true to your original vision. That is the challenge. And underlying it all must be a true passion for what you do.”

“It’s about thinking outside the box, about not accepting what is considered achievable.”

C A S E S T U D Y L E A D S T O T R E AT M E N T B R E A K T H R O U G H M A S S AG E T H ER A P Y LAURIE FISHER Registered massage therapist, MRU instructor Laurie Fisher doesn’t take no for an answer. When a 73-year-old woman presented with a condition that is currently treated surgically, Laurie tackled the problem in her Massage Therapy case-study course at Mount Royal University. Laurie’s tenacity and resulting success has led to her acceptance into a PhD program for clinical research in massage therapy at the University of Southern California, adding to her master’s in Kinesiology. “We had huge success with the stretching and massagetherapy interventions. It’s an incredible feeling,” Laurie says of the results of the treatment she devised for Dupuytren’s

contracture. The condition results in people’s fingers contracting into their palms, leaving them unable to extend their fingers. “When I first met this lady, she couldn’t take a pot of boiling water from the stove to the sink. She couldn’t brush her hair properly. She couldn’t pull plugs out of the wall. Now we are restoring function for people. We are giving them their life back.” That initial success has been replicated under case-study protocols. Now teaching that same case-study course at MRU, Laurie is encouraging her students to create their own success. “It’s about thinking outside the box, about not accepting what is considered achievable. And never stop asking questions.”

L E A D I N G B Y E X A M P L E L A N G UAG E S I N S T I T U T E REBECCA DAU Student, personal care assistant Rebecca Dau’s dedication to empowering women and children in her community is a force to behold. “Everything that happens to me makes me stronger,” says Rebecca, a student in Mount Royal University’s Languages Institute. Completing her Academic English Level 2 is another step on her journey towards MRU’s Social Work Diploma. “I want to be able to help people the way I was helped,” Rebecca says. “Life is challenging, but people should know that they are the leader of their own life.” Rebecca was one of the Lost Girls of Sudan who fled her country’s civil war as a child on her own. After years in a

refugee camp in Kenya, she returned home, only to be seriously injured in a bombing. She was hospitalized for a year and wasn’t expected to recover. Since then, she’s had 24 surgeries. Rebecca began working as a personal care assistant after she immigrated to Canada in 2004. Once she completes MRU’s English Language Program, she’ll take academic upgrading to meet the Social Work Diploma requirements. Rebecca’s passionate in her belief that education can be a transformational experience. The single mother of two is a leader for not only her children, but for her community as well.

“We have to find ways to meet the complexity of the work today’s teachers are faced with.”

C R E A T I N G O P P O R T U N I T I E S I N T H E C L A S S R O O M I N C LU S I V E E D U C AT I O N JOY CHADWICK MRU professor, instructor and curriculum developer The classroom of today is vastly different than that of 20 — or even 10 — years ago. Students with a wide array of abilities, learning styles and backgrounds share the same environment. How is one teacher supposed to provide the individualized education these different learners need? Supporting K-12 teachers and education assistants with the knowledge and tools they need to meet those demands is the driving force behind Mount Royal University’s new Inclusive Education Certificate. “The work is not getting easier. We have to find ways to meet the complexity of the work today’s teachers are faced with. We can’t keep working harder; we have to work smarter and these

courses are a way to do that,” says Joy Chadwick, an MRU professor who is developing some of the certificate’s curriculum. The certificate’s three streams are: English Language Learners; Complex Learners (special needs students and exceptional students); Diversity (LGBTQ, Indigenous awareness/students). Courses will be added over the next two years as the certificate is developed. “Taking these courses opens up opportunities for teachers. It’s about building their confidence and repertoire so that there is that joy in teaching because they have the tools to meet the complexities.”
