Withdrawal Policy For class lessons, there is a no-refund policy. In extenuating circumstances, the student may file an appeal in writing to the Program Administrator, General Programs, requesting a refund. If approved, a $25 administration fee will be deducted from the refund. If a student formally withdraws from private lessons before the fourth scheduled lessons, a refund will be made equal to the tuition paid less a $25 processing fee and the cost of four lessons. Withdrawals made after the fourth scheduled lesson will not receive a refund. For all withdrawals and refund requests, the instructor will provide an accurate, correct record of all lessons scheduled. In the
absence of such records, the student’s claim as to the number of lessons scheduled will be used with the Conservatory Office records to determine the refund due. THE BELLA CONCERT HALL
This is the crown jewel of the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. Since its debut in 2015, the 787-seat house has set the stage for local and international artists to resonate.

Private Lessons Every person, every age and every level of development Private lessons are available in all areas of music and speech instruction for all ages and levels of development, either on-campus or in many Calgary communities. They are taught by highly qualified professional teachers and performers with real-life musical experience. Lessons are taught in a variety of styles, including: blues, classical, contemporary, country, flamenco, folk, jazz, latin, popular, rock, traditional and much more. All lessons are tailored to your interests. New students must complete an online lesson placement request form at mru.ca/lessonform. A coordinator will then contact you directly to assist with your placement for the term and help determine the day, time and duration of your lessons. If you have all the registration information you need, you can call 403.440.6821 during office hours to register. Fees: $69 – $110/hr.

We will work with you to design custom workshops or clinics for any size. At the Mount Royal University Conservatory, group programs are tailored to your budget, needs and schedule. Academy Program for Young Artists Entrance to all Academy programs is by audition only. Applications for 2018/19 will be accepted from Feb. 15 to April 15, 2018. Auditions will take place in May. For more information, please contact academychoral@mtroyal.ca. An enrichment program providing intensive musical training of the highest quality to today’s outstanding young artists, the Academy Program offers participants a balanced, performance-based course of study, as well as opportunities to meet and perform with professional musicians and renowned teachers.
Conservatory
Specific training includes: sessions with acclaimed musicians in private lessons; small group classes and master classes; individual sessions with an assigned collaborative pianist; chamber music coachings; frequent recitals aimed at developing confidence and stage presence; and, participation in a large ensemble for those students who play orchestral instruments.

Through regular performances, participants gain valuable experience in a variety of settings for audiences that may consist of their peers, faculty members, guest artists and the public. The Academy Program offers gifted young musicians the opportunity to progress at an accelerated pace. Graduates who continue with their musical studies are much sought after by leading post-secondary music schools and performance ensembles in Canada, the United States and Europe. The Academy Program’s reputation is known and respected throughout the world.
Strings, Piano, Woodwinds and Brass The Academy’s instrumental program is divided into distinct levels: • Junior Academy: students benefit from the extensive technical enrichment provided at this level, with emphasis on developing technical proficiency and musical skills • Intermediate Academy: students play more advanced repertoire and continue to develop their performance skills • Associate Academy: younger students play advanced repertoire to prepare for the Senior Academy • Senior Academy: musically mature students play very advanced repertoire In addition, we are pleased to offer an Honours Class, which is suitable for extraordinary young talents accelerating at a pace beyond their age. New students are placed in the program based on the results of their audition, while those already in the Academy are required to re-audition yearly to maintain their enrolment or move on to the next level. Students not placed into one of these levels may be considered for Academy Participant status.
Guitar The Academy guitar program is for enthusiastic, ambitious young players seeking a well-rounded music education. This cost-effective program is designed as a supplement to a student’s private guitar lessons, offering a group environment where they may further develop their playing ability, performance skills, theoretical foundation and overall musicianship. With Junior, Intermediate, Associate and Senior levels, the program includes dedicated young players, as well as aspiring professionals.
Voice This is a comprehensive, credit-free training program for singers ages 13 – 19 who exhibit a sincere desire and the vocal talent to become a classical singer. The vocal program is a supplement to private voice lessons, focusing on the educational needs of the developing singer and offering large and small ensemble performance experience. Singing in monthly recitals is required and lectures pertaining to the study of classical voice are part of this program. For full information on the Academy for Young Artists, visit mru.ca/Academy.
Wyatt Artist in Residence Program In music, as in other disciplines, artists often point to an educational encounter with or a transformational performance by a great artist as the inspiration for their commitment to a life in the performing arts. The Wyatt Artist in Residence Program strives to provide our Academy students with those transformational experiences, bringing them together with the very best mentors in their field and closing the loop between emerging talent and truly great artists of our time. This important component of the Academy for Young Artists was initiated by an anonymous supporter in honour of Hal Wyatt and his wife, Marnie. Since its inception, the Wyatt program has afforded our students the opportunity to hear and study with an incredible array of international stars in intimate master class settings. Past artists in residence include: James Ehnes, Nicola Benedetti and Ian Swensen, violin; Laurence Lesser, Lynn Harrell and Frans Helmerson, cello; Anton Kuerti, Gabriela Montero and Yuja Wang, piano; the Assad Brothers, guitar; Susanne Mentzer, Russell Braun and New York Polyphony, voice; and the New Orford and Vogler quartets. Early Childhood Programs Music with Your Baby Music with Your Baby creates a strong partnership among parent, teacher and child, in which you play an important role in developing your child’s full potential. This unique program for babies, from newborn to 36 months, is based on the principle that the greatest development of a child’s natural abilities takes place in an environment that is enriched by music and language. The program promotes confidence and self-esteem, increases focus and concentration, strengthens physical and aural awareness, and fosters a love of music, language and learning that will last throughout your child’s life. A foundation of listening is built using the human voice in rhyme, rhythm and song. Traditional folk and nursery songs, rhymes, chants and storytelling are also presented, all while respecting the learning pace of each child. $325

Early Childhood Programs Music and Movement Music and Movement (Eurhythmics) combines imaginative play, musical games, singing and instrument playing. Your child will use instruments and equipment such as xylophones, glockenspiels, hand drums, rhythm sticks, Orff instruments, balls, hoops and scarves. Creative movement is an important part of the program. Your child will develop coordination, concentration and self-confidence while learning the fundamentals of music. This program provides a sound basis for children who wish to continue the study of music or dance. It is based on ideas developed by educator and musician Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. All classes are parented classes (parents are in attendance), 45 minutes long and held once a week. Students in our Music and Movement classes must have reached their third birthday before Sept. 1. $325

Early Childhood Programs Kodály Classes Kodály musicianship classes create a playful atmosphere where children use the voice as their first instrument. Children are actively engaged as they develop music reading and writing skills that prepare budding musicians for future studies. This includes: • in-tune singing • beat, rhythm, melody, form • phrasing, dynamics • tempo and timbre Xylophones and rhythm instruments are used to reinforce concepts first heard through singing. In advanced levels, the recorder is introduced to reinforce music reading skills. Parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály Program. Parents join their children for the final 10 minutes of each class and are encouraged to share musical activities at home. Children have weekly take-home activities to reinforce the lessons.
Enrolment is accepted in September or February, depending on your child’s readiness for an un-parented experience. $195

Early Childhood Programs Orff Classes Using their voices to speak and sing, and their bodies to move and dance, children in Orff classes joyously progress from musical imitation to improvisation and literacy. The classes are based on things children enjoy: singing, chanting rhymes, clapping, dancing and keeping a beat on anything near at hand. These instincts are directed into learning music by hearing and making it first, and then by reading and writing music later, as age appropriate. Students explore their own creative expression in a non-competitive atmosphere. The unity of music, speech and movement are essential in the teaching based on the ideas of Carl Orff. Through singing, dancing and playing on a wide variety of instruments, children learn music in a playful and holistic way. At the end of the term, each class has the opportunity to perform in one of MRU’s beautiful theatres. The whole family is invited to celebrate the children’s accomplishments. All Orff Classes are unparented.
Orff Prep Classes This is an un-parented class, which introduces some of the fundamental elements of music in a playful and holistic way. The children sing, dance and play music on a variety of instruments and develop their intellectual, motor, emotional and social skills. $325

Orff Basic Classes This class is for four year olds who have previous music experiences (e.g. Music and Movement classes or Orff Prep) and for five year olds with no previous music experience. Early Childhood Programs Children’s Early Cello Ensembles Cello group classes are a wonderful complement to private lessons as they allow young cellists to experience the fun of making music with their peers. Children’s daily practice is inspired by sharing their weekly accomplishments through solo performance and being able to celebrate the success of their friends. Technique is improved through scale and arpeggio repetition, focus on in-tune ringing tones and maintaining fine cello posture. Beginning reading, rhythm and music theory are actively put to use through unison, two- and three-voice ensemble playing. This program provides weekly performance opportunities and four Saturday morning recitals each year, which feature the group and solo repertoire prepared in class. Classes include: • basic music, specific cello and chamber music skills • effective classroom, audience and performance behaviour • extended cello techniques learned through accompanied storytelling • weekly scale, arpeggio and technical bow work • important music theory and reading tools • solo performance opportunities with piano accompaniment • the inspiring experience of putting all of the above together, while creating music with their friends All young cellists are welcome. Taught by the first accredited Suzuki trumpet instructor in North America, Natalie DeJong, this program will pilot the use of the first Suzuki trumpet book. The year-long program provides a balance between working on musical literacy and gaining instrumental skills so students develop the ability to read music and to play their instrument with beautiful tone and strong technique.
All Mount Royal University Conservatory Suzuki programs are endorsed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the European Suzuki Association. The Zhi-Yin Choir is a mixed-voice adult choir. Its main focus is on popular and classical Chinese music, with Mandarin being the most commonly used language. The Zhi-Yin Choir provides vocal coaching to all of its members through its music conductor and guest speakers. Mandarin Children’s Choir Join our first-ever Mandarin Children’s Choir and explore the language and culture of China through music and song. CALGARY YOUTH ORCHESTRA Emerging artists in the Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) will treasure the experience of playing in the birthplace of classical music, Europe, in the summer of 2018. The director and conductor of the internationally recognized ensemble, Edmond Agopian, is anticipating a fantastic three-city tour in Budapest, Vienna and Krakow. He is especially excited to appear at the Esterházy Palace in Hungary. “It’s one of the most magnificent baroque palaces in Austria, where (composer) Joseph Haydn worked for nearly 40 years,” Agopian says. The tour repertoire will certainly feature Haydn, but also include works by Bartok, Mozart and Chopin — all composers who created in these regions. In addition to
performances, the CYO tour is intended to open the eyes and ears of these young musicians. “We will be visiting a number of major museums, art galleries and composers’ places such as Beethoven’s residence in Heiligenstadt, where he composed a number of major works. They will be immersed in the history and culture of these musically significant places.” Since 1970, this flagship orchestra at the Mount Royal University Conservatory has toured the globe. Orchestras and Ensembles The Orchestral and Ensembles Program at Mount Royal Conservatory provides a quality ensemble experience for young string, woodwind, brass and percussion players from Calgary and the surrounding area. With six strings-based ensembles and one full orchestra, the Mount Royal Conservatory string orchestra program is one of the most comprehensive in Canada.
Junior Orchestra Program The Junior Orchestra Program offers five ensembles for string players aged seven to 15. By audition, students are placed in the ensemble that best suits their needs, at the discretion of the Junior-Orchestral Program Coordinator and ensemble directors. • Preparatory Strings: the entry-level ensemble for strings. All first-year orchestra members start in this group. • Pre-Chamber Strings A and B: string orchestras in which members benefit from further ensemble skills in preparation for the Chamber or Junior Strings. Most players have one year of experience in the Preparatory Strings or its equivalent. • Chamber Strings: a small orchestra for those eight to 12, who will benefit from detailed training. Members should have at least two years of orchestral training. • Junior Strings: a large string ensemble investigating more advanced repertoire for orchestra members aged 10 to 15. A minimum RCM Grade 4 level is preferred.

Calgary Youth Orchestra

The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is the flagship orchestra in Mount Royal Conservatory’s Orchestral Program. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s leading youth orchestras, the CYO provides solid training in orchestral playing, with professional coaching from some of the best local, national and international clinicians and conductors. Workshops with guest conductors and visiting orchestras are a regular program feature. The CYO performs a series of concerts throughout the year and participates in the annual Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in Banff. Since 1970, the orchestra has toured internationally and continues to do so, usually every second year. Acceptance into the orchestra is by competitive audition in May of each year, and is open to students aged 14 to 24. The CYO is supported by the Calgary Youth Orchestra Society, an independent not-for-profit society, which works to provide enhanced performance opportunities for the orchestra. Conservatory Sinfonia The Conservatory Sinfonia is for advanced string and wind players aged 12 to 18. This orchestra performs music from professional repertoire and a high degree of commitment is expected. In addition to weekly rehearsals, players participate in an annual workshop with a guest conductor, the Conservatory’s annual Winter Fantasia concert performance opportunities during the term. Music Theory and History Music Theory, History and Composition For all ages Mount Royal University Conservatory offers group classes and private instruction in all theoretical and practical subjects in accordance with the national standard as established by the Royal Conservatory of Music and Conservatory Canada. Not all Music Theory and History subjects or levels may be available as group classes each year.
Rudiments Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Learn the essential building blocks of music theory: notes, scales, keys, chords and rhythms. You will also practice aural skills, including interval recognition, sight singing, cadence recognition and melodic dictation.
Harmony • Basic Harmony lays the foundation for further studies in harmony, counterpoint, analysis and composition.

• Intermediate Harmony is a continuation of Basic Harmony, exploring the minor mode and introducing the process of modulation (changing key) and the use of 7th chords.

Speech Arts and Drama Rhymes and Rhythms The developmental approach and small class size encourage young children to develop clear, expressive speech and confident communication. Speech Arts and Drama Speak Up, Make Your Point Speak up and make your point with energy, clarity and confidence and develop presentation skills crucial to success in today’s world. Orderly thinking develops as students learn to formulate topics, organize information and deliver clear, meaningful messages. Effective listening habits develop as students listen to and analyze the work of others. Students will reduce speech anxiety as they develop vocal dynamics and clarity of speech. Students learn to employ important delivery techniques, such as using language, gesture and eye contact to add impact to their presentations. Course work will include preparation and presentation of a variety of impromptu and prepared speeches. These classes are an excellent experience for beginners and children and teens who are nervous about speaking in public. World Music Carnatic Raga Music This course will serve as an introduction to Carnatic music. Basic exercises in different ragas will help to build the knowledge of placement of the notes (Swarasthanas) and voice culture techniques will help to establish a strong foundation in singing the notes. Klezmer Ensemble Klezmer is dance music from the wedding traditions of Eastern European Jewish communities. After being all but forgotten in the wake of the Second World War, the music has undergone a huge revival in the past generation, with klezmer bands popping up in countries around the world. In addition to playing, you will listen to recorded examples, learn a bit about the major figures of the klezmer tradition, kibbitz (discuss), schmooze (more talking) and maybe even nosh (snack) a little. $175

“The quality that jumps out at you the most is the choreography, the energy and the physical movement of the performers,” says taiko drumming instructor Paula Midori Nieckar. While relatively new to Canada, ever since the Japanese performance art of taiko was added to the Conservatory’s programs in the fall of 2016, the classes are drumming up wide interest and support in the community. “Taiko is accessible to anyone who wants to learn. No musical experience is necessary and you do not need to understand sheet music notation, because it is taught orally,” Nieckar says.
Nieckar, who is also the artistic director of Calgary’s Midnight Taiko, has encouraged taiko classes to collaborate with the Mount Royal Artio choir, and to perform at GlobalFest and the Calgary Stampede. They’ve even shot a music video with Conservatory voice instructor Michelle Minke for her CD Expect the Unexpected. Taiko classes focus on developing striking skills, establishing proper stance and posture, and learning ensemble pieces with basic choreography. World Music Mount Royal Taiko Drumming Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming. Traditionally performed for religious, theatre and communication purposes, taiko is developing into a popular performance art. Taiko is now seen in many countries around the world and Canada’s first taiko ensemble was formed in 1979. Classes will focus on introducing and developing basic striking skills, proper stance and posture, and learning taiko ensemble pieces with basic choreography. The four respected elements of taiko are: • kokoro (spirit: self-control and playing from the heart) • waza (action: musicianship, skill and technique) • karada (body: physical strength and endurance) • rei (etiquette: respect, courtesy and unity)

World Music Taiko Ensemble – Jack Bazaar Jack Bazaar, written by Kris Bergstrom, features groundbreaking choreography and innovative slant-drum mutli-tone rhythms. Specifically requested by the National Theater of Japan for performance in the 2013 Nihon no Taiko concert, Jack Bazaar is one of the taiko world’s most exciting, new compositions. In this course, you will learn the named phrases for the first half of Jack Bazaar. West African Drumming This course offers an introduction to anyone wishing to explore West African drumming music. No prior musical experience is necessary. In a group setting, you will learn how to make the three basic sounds on the djembe: the bass, open tone and slap. These sounds form the vocabulary of rhythms, which are combined to create a unique traditional polyrhythm. Once students have mastered the basic concept of polyrhythm, they will further explore polyrhythm with call response, rhythmic conversations and songs. This is an oral/aural tradition and is taught in follow-the-leader style. $175

Mandarin Children’s Choir Join our first-ever Mandarin Children’s Choir and explore the language and culture of China through music and song. Mount Royal Zhi-Yin Choir Under the directorship of its founder and conductor Shana Yang, the choir has grown to consist of more than 60 enthusiastic choral music lovers. The choir is actively involved in the city, especially in the local Chinese community. The Zhi-Yin Choir is a mixed-voice adult choir. Its main focus is on popular and classical Chinese music, with Mandarin being the most commonly used language. The name of the choir means “friends in music.” The choir shares experience and cooperation in music in order to build friendships and to promote multiculturalism in Canada. The Zhi-Yin Choir provides vocal coaching to all of its members through its music conductor and guest speakers. The choir has been active in hosting concerts in Calgary annually and has also participated in concerts in Edmonton, Vancouver and New York. $200*
