Whilst the App offers a directory of businesses and events across the Mornington Peninsula, for those businesses who have signed up to be included in the App, they are allocated an exclusive tag which can be sms’d for App users to receive special offers, discounts, event news and more. This in turn, creates an automated database of customers who want to hear from that business. The technology allows the business owner to then create relevant promotions to offer to these loyal customers.

The Main Street Market Mornington celebrated its 30th Anniversary on Main Street on Wednesday 10th April. The market has been operating as a home made, home grown or home baked market since April 1983 making it the longest running midweek street market in Victoria which is quite an achievement! The anniversary market was a fantastic day on Main Street, there were thousands of people in the street enjoying music played by local buskers and the Royal Navy Band played two sets outside the Mornington Post Office. Kids were having their faces painted, playing in the playground and patting the baby animals at the animal farm – yes there were even piglets!! The stallholders enjoyed having the opportunity to talk to so many new customers that hadn’t been to the market before, and showcasing their lovingly crafted, grown or baked products.

PICK OF THE CLIQUE Mt Eliza resident, Stephany Avila is a young actress with talent and ambition to burn. Dedicated, focused and refreshingly genuine, this is a woman who wants to set the screen on fire and she’s just the flame to do it. Having won the leading role as Mackenzie Rodriguez in a new television series called Clique, she and a talented group of young actors will be stirring the pot with this hot new series.

Neighbours, Holly’s Heroes and Elephant Princess, Avila has lots of experience to draw from. She’s happy to support anyone who has genuine passion. This is not surprising given the remarkably artistic and exquisitely nurturing family she comes from. Her Argentinean parents are high achievers, but really, all the Avilas are accomplished, individuals who support one another’s aims and ambitions.

Created, written, produced and directed by another powerhouse young lady, Amanda Duckworth, Clique follows the lives of a group of close knit high school friends. “It’s kind of like a combination between Skins and Puberty Blues,” Avila reveals. No holds barred, this shows tells it like it is in the world of teen angst and real life issues facing this fraught age bracket. The series pilot is currently being pitched to five Australian free-to-air networks and one US based network that broadcasts on Foxtel internationally. The Clique trailer can be viewed online to see firsthand what all the buzz is about.

Currently, Avila and her sister Natasha, a gifted visual artist and jewellery designer, are in the process of creating a new business venture called, A Leading Production. From original music composition, lyric and script writing to fashion and accessory design, the two sisters hope to build a creative collaborative catering to the film and television industry, whilst encouraging young people to bring their own talents to the mix. It’s ambitious, but if anyone can pull this off, it’s the Avila sisters.

As controversial as the choices and decisions teens make in their real lives, this show is sure to confront the sensibilities, but that’s a good thing. It exposes the risk taking behaviours biologically inherit in the teen brain. This raw exposure of real issues allows parents and other adults the opportunity to think about and talk about these issues with teens, bringing thoughtfulness, sensitivity and insight to the conversation. Positivity is the driving force behind Avila’s personal and professional ambitions. She teaches and mentors budding actors between the ages of 10 and 25. Having grown up as a child actor in shows such as,

Stephany is also in the process of setting up a foundation for young adults aiming to promote positive body image, self-esteem and confidence. She has been visiting high schools to seek ideas and feedback from her target audience. Whether in real life or on the screen, Avila is a person who is destined to make a difference in the world. Check out the trailer for Clique at: http://www. cliquetvau.com, or follow Stephany’s stellar trajectory by viewing her website at: www.stephanyavila.com. Stephany also writes a column for Australian Actor’s Network giving actors tips and advice on how to succeed in the acting industry. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS, Arts Editor, Pearl Magazine

TEAM BAREFOOT TAKES ON THE CHALLENGE For the past five years, Team Barefoot have been one of the Australia’s most successful privately funded Triathlon Teams headed by seven times Australian Triathlon Champion and local resident, Stephen Foster.

Team Barefoot formed after Foster, who raced for a professional triathlon team in France for five years, saw a niche in the Australian triathlon scene to develop teams of a similar nature. “In France, everything is team orientated, something lacking here in Australia and America and so I decided to start up my own Team.” said Foster. The concept is gradually taking shape with numerous other teams forming throughout the country. WINTER

“We are one of the best sponsored teams currently in operation, apart from the big nationally funded programs and international teams from Europe.”

Triathlon is still largely an individual sport; however with Triathlon being in the Olympics now, the team format is slowly taking shape as team work, tactics and sacrificing yourself for your team to help them to victory, grows stronger and becomes a priority. It’s similar to professional cycling. Team Barefoot has recently finished another successful season having won numerous National, State and overall series titles from elite category to age group. Foster also has two professional

triathletes in his team, Nathan Buschkuehl and Mitch Kibby, who have both been accepted to race

for French triathlon teams during the Australian off season. “They are living the dream as I did, making a career out of sport and travelling the world. The important thing, something that is a compulsory part of being on my team, is that they also develop a career outside of sport to fall back on once they retire from racing.”

Foster also has a general squad of dedicated athletes, many of whom competed in the recent Melbourne Ironman that started at Frankston and finished in St. Kilda. He was so motivated at watching and supporting his squad that he decided to sign up for next year’s Ironman, consisting of a 3.8km swim off Frankston Pier

followed by a 180km bike ride out and back along Eastlink Freeway and finishing off with a 42.2km marathon run from Frankston Pier to St. Kilda. “Triathlon is not beyond anyone.” Says Foster. “I can have a person fit enough to compete in the short course events on four to five hours of training a week which isn’t that much time commitment when you add it all up. We can even help those who are weak swimmers overcome their fears.” Team Barefoot, who’s athletes are also members of the local Mornington Peninsula Triathlon Club (M.P.T.C) operate out of The Peninsula School in Mt. Eliza and have training sessions running seven days a week.

COLOURFUL CHARACTERS

REVEALED AS MORNINGTON CELEBRATES 125 YEARS OF FOOTBALL HISTORY The Mornington Football Club has a rich history, dating back to 1888 and this year will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a gala dinner. One of the oldest football clubs around, Mornington Football Club has experienced its share of highs and lows over the past century and a quarter, and seen a tapestry of colourful characters coming through its gates. Louis Harrison is one such character from the early 1900s. Well known in the area, Harrison was the proprietor of The Grand Hotel, chair on the Mornington Racing Club committee, and chair of the Mornington Football Club, where he was president for three years, including the 1915 premiership year. Harrison’s three boys, Louis Jnr. Thomas and George all played football for Mornington. Louis Harrison Snr was a founding member of the Racing Club and the story goes that he won the Stawell Gift under an assumed name in earlier days. George worked for his dad in the pub until he joined the A.I.F. At the ripe old age of 18 he was sent to Gallipoli. With football in his blood, George took part in an exhibition of Aussie Rules under the shade of the pyramids, where he kicked two goals. Two years exactly to the day of his enlistment George died of wounds received in action. Current president, Norm Robinson, says the

club has come a long way since those early days but still retains its commitment to providing young people with activities and opportunities to be part of a community. “As part of our celebration we are putting together the ‘Team of Our History’. Like the old team of the centuries, we’re going to select our best and most valuable players from the past and present and unveil it at the anniversary dinner,” Mr Robinson said. The club is holding their anniversary dinner on Saturday August 17 at the Mornington Racecourse. Over the years, the club has seen the grandstand go, built a new facility, and introduced the netball club as recently as last year- a far cry from the clubs humble beginnings in Empire Street. “The culture of football clubs has changed a lot over the years. They are more socially responsible and aware of making sure young people are part of a sporting activity,” Mr Robinson said. The club has seen tragedies with the 1892 boat disaster, when 15 members of the Mornington Football Club, returning home from a match in Mordialloc, drowned. It has also seen good times with 11 senior premierships and a wealth of experiences and mates that have become lifelong friends.

DOLLDRUMS Fuelled by a wild imagination and a love of creepy things! Dolldrums dolls are a the newest creation from the imagination of artist Kylie Dexter, who lives in a big doll house in Mt Martha with her husband Rob and son Zen. The dolls are made using a technique called needle felting, which involves jabbing a sharp needle into wool thousands of times to achieve the desired effect. In Dolldrum’s case it is used to create some creepy and cute characters. Some of the more popular dolls involve doing caricatures of the customers then zombifying them, this is called ZombieYou. Kylie will also zombify your beloved pets! And then there are Dolldrum’s DooVoo dolls which are reverse Voodoo’s. “Dolldrums doesn’t like messing in bad Voodoo so get your pin cushions somewhere else!” comments Kylie. “My passion with dolls and puppets began 30 years ago when I first watched the movie ‘The Dark Crystal’ and shortly afterwards ‘The Never Ending Story’. I was a teenager at the time and until then I had never had any sort of fondness for dolls, but these movies were the beginning of my love of puppets. I adored how easily you could be brought into their world. I was intrigued by the darkness of the characters, mixed with the softness of the material they were made with, which led to the creation of Dolldrums dolls.” Each doll is made with love and has its own personality. The process of creating the dolls is done with care. Kylie WINTER

I’ve also been lucky enough to be a featured artist in the upcoming Art Doll Quarterly.” Kylie explains. Dolldrums Zombie dolls will be seen at the first ever Melbourne Zombie Convention to be held in October this year. “Although I appreciate my current international market, with dolls now living in homes from Germany to Alaska, I would love to have some more of my babies stay locally in Melbourne, especially on the Mornington Peninsula! I love the diversity of art and culture that you so easily find on the Peninsula, and I couldn’t think of a better place to bring these little souls to life.” says Kylie You can find Dolldrums dolls at www.dolldrums.com Or at www.facebook.com/dolldrumsdoll

A worlD of BEAUTY FOR Jessica Martini Miss World is the longest running international beauty pageant in the world. Launching in 1951 the pageant aims to raise funds for various children’s charities across the globe.

Miss World Australia seeks to empower young woman to be a part of ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ encouraging them to become role models for other women and those in their wider community. Local Hastings resident Jessica Martini has made it into the State finals for the Miss World Australia Pageant. At twenty-five years of age, Jessica says she wanted to encourage others to get involved in raising money for charities, “My motivation to enter the pageant was to create a larger platform to work off in regards to my charity work. I have always been involved with volunteering and raising funds for charities and felt that by entering the Miss World pageant that I could inspire others to get involved with charity and also get more help by having the Miss World title.” Anyone can enter online and if they are accepted delegates are asked to create awareness and raise funds for Miss World’s chosen charity for that year. This year the charity is ‘The Lilla Community’ - an indigenous community in the Northern Territory. Jessica says delegates must then endeavour to raise funds for the charity and are judged, “The judges look at our abilities to self motivate, initiative, awareness and fundraising amount.” Jessica says since being accepted into the pageant last October she has been working hard to raise funds for the Lilla Community. Jessica organised and ran a charity fashion show in February at the Westernport Marina and says this was one of her favourite events. “I had local fashion boutiques such as Bella on Barkly in

Mornington, Smooch Fashion in Somerville and millinery by Annette Sanfillippo showcased their garments and accessories. It was so great to see people coming together to not only support me and my endeavours, but to also give to the Lilla Community.”

Have being accepted into the state finals Jessica will now meet with Miss World directors for an interview where they will discuss her personality, goals and ambitions and after this national finalists will be selected. These finalists will then participate in the final stage of pageant, with one girl being crowned Miss World Australia. The winners then fly to Thailand to represent Australia in the Miss World pageant. Jessica says it has been an incredible experience so far and encourages others to apply, “I have felt that just by being involved in this pageant that I have grown so much as a person, I encourage all girls to give it a go. My aspiration is to make it as a national finalist. I’m making the most of my Miss World journey, and if I don’t make it through, I’m so happy and content with what I’ve done and how far I’ve come, I’m so proud of my efforts and I have learned so much, it’s been a great experience all round.” A night for the Lilla Community Aim to raise $1,000 for the Lilla community and to get Jess to the national finals in July. Bound for Balcombe Ex Balcombe ‘apprentice’ soldier Ron Bridgman wrote in 2002 that his mother ‘had come out of the house and waved goodbye to the aeroplane in the night sky’, when he left Perth as a fifteen year old to enter the Balcombe Barracks way of life. Who knows what was going on in the heads of those young men when they came upon the training facility used during World War Two? Most of them were still wet behind the ears. Established in 1940, Balcombe Barracks in Mount Martha was also used for rest and recovery by the First Division United States Marine Corps after their involvement in the Battle of Guadalcanal (code named Operation Watch Tower by Allied forces) in 1943. Reveille sounded at 6am each morning. Apprentices were to jump out of bed with both feet on the floor. The day

had begun. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Lynn Bowden says; ‘The Military’s presence had a large impact on the local community during those times, and the resulting changes brought about by the presence of both the Australian and US forces’, (i.e. road and sewerage construction), ‘played an important role in the development of Mount Martha’. She goes on. ‘The army’s presence was not only confined to the Balcombe site. Wives of Australian servicemen were accommodated at the Grandview Guesthouse in Mount Martha, and Mount Martha House was occupied by service personnel. Maryport Guest House (formerly Melrose) and Camp Manyung in Mount Eliza were used as virtual hospitals for wounded marines’. The stories of Balcombe and the Australian

Army Apprentices School, School of Signals, Survey and Music, as well as the role it had in the recuperation of the First Division United States Marine Corps, have been commemorated with the installation

of story boards and plaques at the former site of the barracks. ‘It’s important that the community read these stories and visualise what the barracks looked like, and to reflect on the broader role they played’, says Councillor Bowden. The signs and plaques were unveiled on Saturday May 4th and coincided with a reunion weekend for the Australian Army Apprentices School. The Balcombe Barracks Commemoration reunion weekend was open to all units and personnel that served at Balcombe Barracks including Apprentices, Signals, Survey, Music, US Marines, WRAAC and civilian staff. The community was invited to the unveiling of the signs at Balcombe Grammar School, 389 Nepean Highway Mount Martha, in an effort to reflect on those who have done so much for our local (and world-wide) community. by Liz Rogers fresh every season

It’s you and me Wugubank is the developing partnership of independent primary school Penbank on the Mornington Peninsula and the Wugularr School at Beswick, an hour’s drive east of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The program began when a Penbank teacher went to work at Wugularr School and ended up staying for eighteen months. Throughout this time, several teachers (including the principal) visited and worked as volunteers in the Art and Library departments of the school. Penbank’s Paul Thompson explains. ‘Two to three teachers would travel to Wugularr School once a term’, says Paul. ‘Strong relationships developed between the teachers and students and both groups wanted to learn more about each other. The natural step was for the children from each school to meet’, he goes on. Nelson Mandela once said that education is the great engine to personal development. Through education, a daughter of a peasant can become a doctor’, or ‘the son of a mine worker can become head of a mine’. The

Wugubank partnership exemplifies this concept for it is through education, both within the classroom and out in the wider community where human beings can reach their full potential and connections can be made. Sixteen Wugularr students visited Penbank in August 2010 to begin this exciting adventure of understanding each other’s worlds and the journey just keeps going. The Wugubank partnership also supports the improvement of opportunities for Aboriginal people, as creating positive experiences in early childhood and primary years plays a major role in educating children for a successful life ahead. Visiting Katherine Gorge, Litchfield National Park and swimming in water holes – or the Melbourne Zoo are just the fun parts. Penbank student Maddie Marshall’s poem reveals the indelible mark that has been left on her after visiting Wugularr. I will never forget the blaze of the red sun in the morning, And the sound of the Boobook owl as I wake, Or the wallabies bouncing about the campsite. I will never forget it.

The clear blue sky and the Aboriginals, who always wave with a smile, Or the frangipanis blossoming in the trees, And the crocodiles patrolling the waters. I will never forget the red dust covering the land, And the heat that burns your skin, Or the hand of an Aboriginal child in mine. I will never forget them.

The Wugularr kids who have changed my life forever. With the aim to developing long term relationships, the Wugubank connection broadens the horizons for all who participate now and well into the future. When John McBride first visited the Peninsula, Mornington was little more than a sleepy seaside town. Growing up in Melbourne, a young John and his family would regularly make the south-eastern journey to enjoy relaxed, beachside holidays. John chuckles as he recalls a very different Mornington from the one we know today.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have done a lot of travel in my life and there are few places you can find that have the ambience of Mornington, the beautiful beaches, the facilities and its close proximity to Melbourne.” John shuttles back and forth between the city and Mornington for work.

TV shows like Game of Thrones and Mad Men may be the leading lights in a new golden age of television but Australian drama is holding its own and punching above its weight, according to a man who has worked on some of our most successful movies and television shows.

Menzies says the achievement is significant considering the size difference between the Australian and American production budgets. Whereas Game of Thrones costs millions an hour to produce, The Doctor Blake Mysteries, which Menzies works on, costs a lot less.

The producers of Rake, Peter Duncan and Richard Roxburgh, both worked in feature films before turning their skills to television. Film actor Guy Pearce last year tried his hand at TV, starring in the two Jack Irish telemovies. Menzies says another key difference between now and the seventies is that people are watching their television on larger and higher quality screens, often surrounded by near-theatre quality speakers. “People are spending a lot of money on television, and lots of people watch it,” he said. “It should be fantastic. It shouldn’t be dumbed down. TV has lost its cringe factor and the artists are coming back to it.”

Bryce Menzies, partner and entertainment lawyer at Marshalls+Dent Lawyers, says American pay TV channels like HBO and AMC have shown the rest of the world how great television drama can be. But in a remarkable plot twist of our own, Australian drama has risen to the challenge and now the format rights to Aussie programs like Rake are being sold to America. The US version of SBS’s Wilfred became the highest ranking debut sitcom ever for FX Networks, and Chris Lilley’s Summer Heights High sold to HBO.

Looking forward, Menzies predicts the Australian industry will need to keep working hard. “It’s a constant battle here but when we get an opportunity I think the quality can survive.”

Clearly you need to keep coming up with fresh ideas so that Americans are mining our stuff” Menzies says. “It just goes to show that it’s not all about money,” Menzies says. “Sometimes it’s about quality. There is a relationship between money and quality – but not always.” Television has come a long way since the seventies, when movies attracted the biggest budgets and best artists. Now the flow of talent has reversed.

That means, as the television landscape continues to evolve, we’ll have more good drama to look forward to. “It’s absolutely a golden age of television,” Menzies says. “And Australians are taking part in it.”

CONTEMPORARY, INNOVATIVE & UNIQUE DESIGN Zenibaker’s creative team Michael and Liza Baker are accomplished architects that relish in design.

Architects focuses on highly crafted architecture that embraces human, environmental and contextual concerns.

Husband and wife as well as business partners, Michael and Liza specialise in residential design and have developed a strong foothold in the industry. This is because they inject passion into every project, strive to achieve unique outcomes and get plenty of referrals from ‘very happy clients’, says Michael.

“Our design outcomes are only as good as our working relationship with clients, builders and consultants,” Michael says.

The pair has been working together since 2004, when they established Zenibaker Architects in Melbourne. This was a natural progression following their strong grounding and experience in leading, award-winning offices around the city. It was only in 2010 when they were trying to juggle the business, a young family and inner-city living that they, on a whim, decided to buy a property on the Mornington Peninsula. Needless to say, they haven’t looked back. Combining contemporary and innovative design, Zenibaker

“We are listeners and take time to understand each brief.” To date, Zenibaker has completed an array of projects ranging from renovations to new builds both in Melbourne and on the Peninsula. These projects demonstrate years of experience and each exudes its own unique character. “Most satisfying for us is being able to turn the mundane into something unique and extraordinary. So for this reason, renovations and extensions are something that we love to do,” Michael said. While some couples might find it challenging to work together, the Bakers say the balance of male and female energy that they each bring to their projects creates a

harmonious dynamic. “We both have our own focus areas within a given project,” Liza says. “While Michael and I are both trained in architecture, my focus is more the specifics of the interior, colour, textile and furniture. “I find myself online a lot these days researching, as it also ties in to one of my other great passions which is painting and illustrating.” Zenibaker Architects continues to add unique and inspiring projects to their portfolio. They are not limited in what they can do and take a fresh approach to every new project. In three years on the Peninsula, they have established themselves within the community and have enjoyed making new long-term friendships and connections. MUST SEE AT MORNINGTON PENINSULA REGIONAL GALLERY

LITTLE ARCHIES To celebrate the Archibald Prize Exhibition coming to the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, and the launch of the inaugural Mornington Winter Jazz Festival, Oakhill Gallery is holding the Little Archie’s Window Art Exhibition on Main Street Mornington in June 2013.

Controversial, contested and often cutting edge, the portraiture displayed in the annual Archibald Prize exhibition is always worth seeing. Not only does it represent the pinnacle of artistic standard in Australia, it characterizes the face of our contemporary collective culture. How fortunate then, that the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery was selected to host this exhibition in 2013 and 2014 as its sole Victorian venue.

Artists from the Mornington Peninsula and greater Melbourne have entered portraits into the Little Archie’s Portrait Competition, with 40 entries to be displayed in shop windows within the Mornington Town Centre, identified as the Main Street Mornington Precinct, throughout the month of June 2013. Many artists have chosen local identities, celebrities, politicians and even business traders from the Main Street Precinct to be their subjects, and portraits range from watercolours, oils and charcoal, and are also available for purchase. Self-Guided Walking Tours of the Exhibition are available in the Mornington Winter Jazz Festival Printed Program, and brochures are also available at the two Information Centres in Mornington, at local businesses within the Main Street Precinct, and are also available at the Mornington Chamber of Commerce Office located at 103A Main Street Mornington (above the newsagency). Guided walking tours will be held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend on Sunday 9th June 2013 at 10.30am and 1.30pm meeting at The Grand Hotel – visit www.morningtonjazz.com.au or www.mainstreetmornington.com.au for more details!

Considered one of the most prestigious acquisitive art prizes in Australia, the Archibald Prize has been on display for over nine decades bringing widespread recognition to both artists and sitters alike. Archibald Prize entrants are asked to create a portrait painting portraying a man or woman ‘distinguished’ in arts, letters, science or politics. While open to entrants from across Australasia, most entries are still predominantly of and by Australians. Some familiar faces emerge in the subjects of this year’s finalists, such as, painters Ken Done, Jasper Knight and the late Adam Cullen, as well as a number of actors, e.g. Toni Collette, Naomi Watts, Asher Keddie and Hugo Weaving.

Also noteworthy are a several innovative and intriguing self-portraits. This years’ Packing Room Prize went to Matthew Lynn for his portrait of author and former model, Tara Moss. Top prize this year was awarded to Del Kathryn Barton for her spectacular portrait of actor Hugo Weaving. A two-time Archibald Prize winner, Barton is now one of Australia’s most iconic and recognizable figurative painters. Her distinctive style won over the judges and the viewing public alike. She also won the Archibald Prize in 2008 for an amazing family portrait with her two children celebrating motherhood. It would be a mistake not to see this incredible exhibition when it’s right in our own back yard. To see the winning work of Del Kathryn Barton, Matthew Lynn and this year’s Archibald Prize finalists, visit the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery between June 8 and July 7. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Book tickets on 5975 4395 or visit http://mprg. mornpen.vic.giv.au. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS, Arts Editor, Pearl Magazine

Primrose Fair is the first designer market on the Mornington Peninsula and Mornington Life Magazine sat down to talk to Lara Tweedie and Marlee Horobin, the local business owners behind this new and exciting concept for Mt Eliza. “As small business owners, we understand the incredible amount of hard work it takes to launch a new brand” says Lara Tweedie, owner of local designer pet brand Kelly & Sam. “The concept of Primrose Fair was born from our desire to provide a launch pad for small business. We wanted to create a unique and beautiful event to showcase new and talented designers who may be crafting their products individually or manufacturing on a small scale. There are a number of lovely craft markets around Melbourne, but we felt there was scope to expand on this concept and give budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to present their products direct to consumers. We also wanted the opportunity to support other women in business and this is actually unbelievably important to us”. “We definitely had a vision for the event right from the beginning” says Marlee Horobin, designer and owner of Marlee May Handbags. “Securing the right venue was always going to be the key to creating a beautiful ambience for designers and shoppers alike. Needless to say, we were delighted when Toorak College offered us the use of The Cloisters”.

Staring off into the distance Manyung Gallery’s Artist in Residence Terrence Hadler’s work urges you to travel as far as the mind’s eye will go, and then just a little bit more. Hadler fancies space. Expanse fits him like a glove. Watching the weather rage over the bay, the Wimmera River swell or wedge tailed eagles fly over the Mulga is what he likes to do. His often large oil paintings are endless, sparse, yet packed with what it means to be tied to the land. He is a Mallee boy living by the sea. ‘I’ve been on the peninsula for around thirty years’, says Terrence. ‘I paint six to seven months a year and then travel the rest. The next trip is to the Phoenix Desert in Arizona and New Mexico’ - he’s been invited to be part of a world-wide exhibition of artists who paint the desert. ‘They’ve got big sky over there. Lots of clouds…’ Terrence John Hadler works hard. You can’t be a part time artist. Originally a lawyer before a life changing visit to Georges decades ago where he bumped into buyer Noel Lucas on the shop floor - who looked at his paintings strapped to the top of his then one year old son’s pram and loved them, he still paints for hours a day. He doesn’t believe in artists being told what to paint (or draw) either. ‘I had a great mentor in Richard Gasson’ (the well-known Menzies Creek artist) says Hadler who mentors artists himself, two of which are currently at the College of the Arts. Streeton, Condor and Jane Sutherland are big influences in his work, alongside Fred Williams and the Arthur Boyd landscapes. ‘Good painting isn’t enough though’, he continues. This is where the eclectic Manyung Gallery steps in. ‘I’ve been Artist in Residence at

- by Liz Rogers Manyung for fourteen years’, says Terrence. He has two shows per year but his work is continually on view and he teaches onsite. ‘Manyung Gallery is prepared to take a chance with emerging artists who are not widely accepted. They believe in what you do’. Plus they show their artists throughout Australia and overseas; Hadler has just been to Hong Kong. ‘Loyalty works both ways’; he continues ‘You’ve got to be loyal. Most people are prepared to drop you without any notice’. Not Hadler, he’s no fair weather friend. Next year Terrence will put down his brushes and explore sculpture. Manyung will be part of this adventure. He wants to create a huge piece for the Gallery’s courtyard (about 30’ high) and tackle another one representing the convergence of the Murray and Darling Rivers. Sculptor Nicole Allen will be his mentor. I ask him what he would do if he could no longer paint. ‘I’d write poetry’, says Terrence. Henry Lawson is his favourite. ‘Life is a dream, they tell us, but life seems very real’, writes Lawson in A Song from Brave Men. Hadler’s mind opening work is brave and dreamlike, yet a very real song for the Australian landscape with everlasting lyrics. ART WARMING WINTER

To start off, June’s group exhibition will feature, 2013 Wynne Prize winner, Belynda Henry. The Wynne Prize is awarded annually for the best landscape painting of an Australian scene in oil or watercolour (or for the best figure sculpture by an Australian artist). Henry’s abstract landscape The Trees won the prestigious prize at The Art Gallery of New South Wales in March. Now she’s here to exhibit her Following this exhibition is an innovative new event called Art Buy Sell. Hosted at Manyung, this registered independent business will give art patrons the opportunity to resell artworks from their own collections. (Artwork by artists currently represented by Manyung cannot be sold at this event). Artistic merit, appropriate documentation and provenance are prerequisite to sale. Interested parties should contact David WemyssSmith at the gallery. Part with a masterpiece or discover a hidden treasure at Art Buy Sell from June 20 to June 30. July’s annual landscape exhibition will feature established Manyung regular artists while adding new talent to the fold, such as, McCrae artist, Drew Gregory, whose Drover’s Hut won the 2012 Tattersalls Club Landscape Prize. Each artist adds distinctive style and unique gifts to this show. Their landscapes will be on display until July 28. Also new to Manyung this year are inspiring art classes taught by a variety of accomplished artists demonstrating a wide variety of mediums from drawing and painting to sculpture, printmaking, WINTER

mosaic, resin and air brushing techniques. Low students numbers mean high quality personalized tuition.

PRIVATE ART SALES

Personalizing the art experience and connecting clients with art and artists is part of the ethos of the gallery. With this in mind, Manyung Gallery offers in-home art consultancy bringing their mobile gallery to clients homes to see which art will be suitable in situ. They also host a number of events giving clients and artists a chance to get to know one another. For something a bit different, on Friday, June 7, Mt. Eliza artist Kerry Smith and Manyung Gallery will celebrate queens of all descriptions, and meet gay icon, Priscilla Posely. Feel free to frock up on the nigh. See Kerry’s recent work below, Priscilla Queen of Fountain Gate. There is always something new and exciting happening at Manyung Gallery.

MORNINGTON BUSINESS SUITES – OFFICES WITH NO COMPLICATIONS Mornington Business Suites are a set of brand new, high quality offices tucked away in a quiet complex off Yuilles Road, about 2 minutes drive from Mornington’s Main St. “Overheads such as power, parking and other set-up costs can be a real challenge for businesses, especially startups and smaller operations”, says owner Bindy Lockhart. “The idea behind this new development is to provide a safe and easy place for businesses to operate, with as few complications as possible. That’s why power and other overheads are included in the rental price – so businesses know what to expect, and can budget accordingly.” “With the advent of more flexible work arrangements such as flex-time, working from home or another location, some city businesspeople are looking for a second affordable office close to their holiday houses on the Mornington Peninsula. Others are setting up regional hubs to service the local area. Our business model gives them the power to realise such ambitions with no added complications. They can concentrate on growing their business and we provide them with the perfect environment in which to do it. What you see is what you get.” There are ten offices of a similar size (about 16 square metres), all with their own split system AC / heating unit, six power points and three telephone lines. They share a spacious boardroom, modern kitchenette, toilets and even a shower room. The offices are tastefully decorated with a nautical theme in keeping with the area. “We wanted to make sure there was plenty of natural light and that the offices provided a really pleasant, safe place to work. Somewhere you can invite potential and current clients to and know they will be impressed”, says Bindy. “As the marketplace changes you must change with it and we believe we are offering a really attractive product. Feedback has been very positive and the offices are starting to fill up. It’s great to see our clients enjoying their workplace and growing their businesses with as less stress as possible.” Offices start from $150 per week including power and outgoings, with a minimum of a one-year lease. A GUIDE TO YEAR END TAX PLANNING Business Income and Expenses Some of the following are standard end of year tax strategies for small business owners however there are a couple of suggestions which will need to actioned before year’s end as the opportunity window will disappear forever due to changes to the rules. Planning ahead addressing many of the issues highlighted in this article can assist in minimising your tax liability. The most successful tax planning is, however, conducted throughout the year and takes into account changes in business structure, transactions, cash flows and budgets to avoid any unexpected surprises at the end of the financial year. 1. Instant asset write-off If you are considering purchasing a new asset, do so before 30 June to maximise your deductions in this financial year. Depreciation can be claimed for assets first used, or installed ready for use, before 30 June. • For the 2012/13 year, small businesses are able to claim an immediate write off for any new asset that costs $6,500 or less. • For new or used motor vehicles purchased in the 2012/13 financial year, small businesses can also deduct the first $5,000 of the cost. The remaining value of the vehicle will be depreciated normally When financing a new asset purchase ask for advice from your accountant. Leases, chattel mortgages and hire purchase agreements are all different, and have different tax and GST treatments. The type of finance will depend on the asset being financed. Your accountant will need to see the finance documentation when preparing your tax return to ensure that the correct deductions are claimed.

snug merino merino wool/possum luxury knitwear

2. Review your Inventory – Write off Obsolete stock or Capital items If you have slow moving stock which is unlikely to sell, then the best option is to physically write it off prior to the 30th June to obtain a tax deduction. For the remaining stock on hand you have the choice of valuing it at actual cost, replacement cost or market selling price. The closing value of trading stock effectively forms part of assessable income, so a lower value will result in a deferral of income and therefore tax. Similarly, review your capital assets that can no longer be used or no longer exist. You can claim a tax deduction for the written down value of any obsolete assets that are actually written off in the fixed asset register on or before 30th June. 3. Review your trade debtors – Write off any bad debts Do you have any bad debts? If you account on an accrual basis, you will already have paid tax on this income therefore it makes sense to review your debtors and write off any amounts that are not recoverable. Bad debts must be written off in your accounts before 30 June. 4. Pay your June quarter superannuation by 30 June. The cut-off date for June quarter super guarantee contributions is 28th July. However you can’t claim a tax deduction until the super contributions are actually paid. To benefit from a tax deduction this year make sure you pay your June quarter contributions a few days prior to 30 June. 5. Prepay expenses Small businesses (turnover less than $2 million) can claim expenses prepaid up to 12 months in advance – for larger businesses, this is generally limited to expenses below $1,000. If cash flow allows consider prepaying some expenses. 6. When paying off debt – pay off non-tax deductible debt first and don’t mix investment and personal debt. If you own an investment property and you deposit your wages into your investment loan and redraw the same amount the next day, you have just decreased the tax-deductible percentage of your loan. Don’t mix personal and tax-deductible debt! If you are considering renting your home in the future, consider the use of a mortgage offset account and interest only loan. This way you can minimise the interest, but can still get a tax deduction for 100% of the interest on the original amount borrowed if you later decide to rent out your current home and buy a new one.

9. Tax return preparation • Do you know what’s in your shareholder’s loan account? All payments made, loans advanced or debts forgiven from your company to shareholders or their associates throughout the financial year should be reviewed prior to year end as they could trigger the operation of Division 7A. If Division 7A loans exist, you should ensure that any minimum repayments have been made prior to 30 June. • Do you know what transactions have resulted in a GST adjustment and can you reconcile your balance sheet GST figures? • Ensure that you have complied with the substantiation and timing requirements to claim deduction in 2012/13 10. Have you considered which GST method is best for you? • If your clients pay you upfront, or if you are a property developer and your clients don’t pay until the end of the job you should be on an “accruals” basis for GST. • If you always pay your debts on time, but your clients are late in paying you, you should be registered on a “cash” basis for GST. (Note: if this is the case, you might also want to review your debtor’s terms). 11. Get organised for 2014 – have you considered cloud accounting? Cloud-based accounting programs offer several advantages for small business owners. Not only can your bookkeeper and other financial staff access data as needed, from anywhere, with a secure connection, there are many efficiencies and benefits to be obtained by having realtime financial information to manage your business. 12. Have you been working overseas or moved to Australia? Contact us for advice if you have moved to or from Australia for an extended period. You may need to review your residency status for tax purposes. There are important tax consequences if you change residency. Removal of Capital Gains Discount for Non-Residents: The government will remove eligibility for the 50% discount on capital gains earned after 8 May 2012 by non-resident individuals and trusts on taxable Australian property, such as real estate and mining assets. You can preserve the discount for unrealised capital gains accrued up to 8 May 2012, if you have the asset valued as at that time

7. Claim a tax deduction for $300 gift cards and alcohol If you like to take your employees or clients out to dinner, or give them movie tickets, the ATO considers this to be “entertainment” and it is not tax deductible, nor can you claim GST, regardless of who it’s for or the monetary amount. (sorry!) Give a gift instead – gifts are deductible as long as the gift is given by the business with the expectation that the business will benefit (i.e., the gift is given with the expectation of generating revenue). Gifts to employees and directors are also tax-free as long as they are provided infrequently and are less than $300 each.

8. You may be liable to pay 9% Super Guarantee, workcover and payroll tax for contractors – even if they have an ABN! Don’t get caught out – the ATO looks past contractors arrangements. You should consider changing the terms of your agreements to renumerate contractors for “a result” rather than an hourly, daily or weekly rate. Alternatively, if the contractor is willing to work through a company or trust you could be absolved of SG, workcover and payroll tax obligations.

There is nothing like participating in an event that creates change.

I am sitting in the Chairman’s marquee at Mornington Racecourse around a stylishly laid table, each with a floral centrepiece donated by Tyabb Wholesale Roses, with people who do things for others. On my left, the children’s charity Variety CEO Cary Pedicini and event organiser Michael Kelly who are warm, intelligent and love to have a laugh; on my right, the founders and directors of Hastings’ Abacus Learning Centre (dedicated to helping children with autism spectrum disorder reach their full potential) Lauren and Michael Moore. Today’s event is about supporting these trailblazing, not for profit groups and their tireless efforts in ensuring those in our community who need a helping hand, get it. Mark and Lisa Riley from Riley Racing Stables in conjunction with John Mackie from Mornington Car and Tyre Service are holding this shin dig with all its welldressed patrons and racing day aplomb. Lauren Moore talks. ‘John and Mark visited Abacus to ask us what we needed to help our students. The funds raised today will go to some children who need extra hours of therapy. Each time I look around the room at these people’ – all of whom are at the ready to dig deep for the raffle, silent auction, business card draw and live auction – ‘I feel very emotional. It’s going to make such a difference to these children’s lives’. Lauren continues. ‘Abacus was formed in 2008 by a small group of parents and supporters who realised there was a gap in early intervention services on the Mornington Peninsula. We offer an intensive program of one on one centre based ABA therapy. This kind of financial aid is huge’. Variety knows that children growing up with disadvantage, disability or a serious illness can’t (and shouldn’t) go it alone. It appears that many within the peninsula community recognise this too – entry price to this

event is $155 per head. Enter CEO of Variety Cary Pedicini. ‘Variety is described as the ‘Heart of show business’. It was formed in 1928 in Pittsburgh by a group of performers. One night while meeting to play cards at the Variety Club, they heard crying from outside and upon investigation found an abandoned baby with a note pinned to her chest saying; please take care of my baby – her name is Catherine. The group took her in and began raising funds for things she needed’. It is with this charity of heart that Variety makes such a difference. The Variety Future Kids Program gives the gift of education and achievement, the Freedom Program focuses on independence and self-esteem and the Caring for Kids program offers support to children’s intensive care units, emergency transport and remote diagnosis. It takes many people to ensure a gala runs smoothly and achieves great outcomes. The Children’s Charity Race Day has done just that – approximately $28,000 was raised – which is impressive as it’s the first time Riley Racing Stables has ever done anything like it. Much thanks goes out to Harba Oyster Bar and Grill, Mornington Mazda, The Counting House, Mornington Race Club, Café Grazen, Mornington Golf Club, European Auto Car Refinishes, Browns Sawdust and Shavings, Mornington Car and Tyre Service and, of course, Mark Riley Racing Stables, plus all the other local businesses who supported the day. After seven races thundering past the marquee, raffles being won and best dressed being noted (congratulations to Kahtlin Morris and Alan Watson), one thing is crystal clear; taking the time to care makes all the difference in the world, to someone. Presenting

Orphans of Ghana

Charity Begins with Aimee Get your diaries, smart phones and white boards out to mark in the 10th of August with a big asterix! The third annual Orphans of Ghana Charity Ball is coming to the Gunnamatta Room at the Mornington Racecourse and what better way to make you feel warm inside than to dig deep for such a deserving charity. Local business owners of Wise Choice Fine Foods Tony Carter and Gary and David Morgan have been working hard with the support of Rotary Clubs Frankston Long Island and Sunrise ever since Tony’s daughter Aimee left for Ghana to volunteer in an orphanage in 2005. Cheryl Carter explains. ‘Aimee spent nearly a year in the Ashan Children’s Home in Ghana after selling her local hairdressing salon and car to raise funds. The conditions were appalling; no running water and wells miles away, soaring temperatures, malaria and barely any food. She became very attached to the children. Contracting malaria and typhoid meant she had to return to Australia, but that didn’t stop her!’

jump on board has meant food crops, water storage tanks, new beds and mattresses, mosquito nets and education has changed the lives of those children in Ghana. Construction of a baby clinic with sick bay and office has also improved children’s health dramatically. The building was proudly commissioned by Australian High Commissioner in Ghana Mr Billy Williams. ‘Despite the massive improvements, the fundraising still needs to continues’, says Cheryl, hence the Orphans of Ghana Charity Ball. ‘Our first ball was in 2010. Each year it just gets bigger and better. This year we have Matt Hetherington who is regarded as one of Australia’s best live acts performing’ she goes on. Tickets are $120 per head which includes a four course meal, drinks on arrival, silent and live auctions and a guest MC. For all information on sponsorship or to buy a ticket please call Wise Choice on 5975 0733 or Aimee on 0417 750 759, and help change the future.

Back on Australian soil, Aimee worked tirelessly for those children she left behind. She was named runner up in the Young Aussie of the Year awards in 2007 and was also the key speaker at the Rotary Conference for District 9820 in 2008 where she was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, given to those who have donated more than $1,000 US to the Annual Programs Fund, Polio Fund or the Humanitarian Grants Program. ANDY COWAN

FRANK BENNETT

Multi-ARIA nominee Frank Bennett’s unmistakable talent, personality and panache have led him to become one of the most popular and sought after entertainers in Australia today. He has an uncanny ability to recapture the magic of Sinatra in concert and cleverly balances a penchant for contemporary pop hits ‘a la big band’ in a charismatic and seductive stage performance. Australia’s leading jazz vocalist, Vince Jones’s uses his voice as an expressive instrument with lyrics as a vehicle for stories around themes of love, injustice, peace and anti-greed in a contemporary jazz style. We all love Vince. Vince grew up listening to his musician father’s collection of great jazz albums, and the feel, style and essence of the music became a natural part of Vince’s world. He started out as a bebop trumpet player and in time his superb voice would touch the hearts and minds of many listeners in Australia and beyond.

FLAP!

Andy Cowan‘s virtuoso piano playing highlights both an energetic and melodic beauty. He ripples, rolls and rocks through original compositions with passionate and soulful vocals, wrapping the audience in his energy, weaving an emotional and spellbinding magic. Andy’s musical career began in Melbourne, following classical piano studies he began exploring improvisation, and absorbing musical ideas from soul, blues, and folk artists. Andy will be joined by Jimmy Sloggett- tenor sax , Gavan Anderson slide guitar, Joe Imbroll -bass & Dave Hicks-drums

Melbourne band, Flap is a fiery yet charming band of brass, guts, words and skins who crank out up- tempo songs turning ordinary shoes into dancing ones. This good-times and upbeat gypsy jazz party band use pop melodies, old school jazz and influences from 1920s prohibition-era dance bands but with a modern and hip groove.

VINCE JONES

James Morrison is Australia’s most successful trumpet player and has just been inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame. A virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Besides the trumpet, this multi-instrumentalist also plays trombone, euphonium, flugel horn, tuba, saxophones, and piano. Playing at The Grand Hotel with his acclaimed 6 piece band, it will be a night not to be missed. He recorded “Jazz Meets the Symphony” with The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lalo Schifrin, performed concerts at the Royal Albert hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for Princess Anne. Royal command performances on two occasions for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and for US Presidents Bush & Clinton at Parliament House in Australia. In 1997, James was awarded The Order of Australia for his services to the arts.

Doing what comes naturally

Susan Andrews likes to smile and not just with her mouth – her blue eyes sparkle while describing how much she loves children. ‘Kids are amazing’, she says, ‘always wanting to explore and turning everything into something creative’. It is this zest for creativity and exploration of the natural world that has made the picture perfect Angus and Rose such a unique destination. Set in the 230 hectare historic rural property The Briars in Mount Martha, this boutique space offers a treasure trove of activities for budding nature lovers. ‘I bought the place as a shed about twelve months ago after falling in love with it’, says Susan. The building reminds you of a whimsical childhood cubby house made for adventure, while the two acres of rose garden satiates your senses. ‘You can tap into your creative side or just get your hands dirty’ she continues. The Friends of Angus and Rose working bee every Wednesday offers the chance to drop in, get some gardening done and have a chat. (Free coffee and cake provided!) Children’s parties come into their own at Angus and Rose. Bug hunting, collecting rose petals to make potpourri, making party crowns out of flowers and scrawling on paper covering the tables inside are all on the party list. ‘I have some eighty year old regulars who love to pull out a texta and draw too’, chuckles Susan. ‘We are an interactive zone for parents and children, children and grandparents. It’s about connecting the generations and learning from each other’. Wheel chair access is a given. Susan’s penchant for home-grown product is also apparent at Angus and Rose - purchase unique vintage wear, books and locally hand-made keepsakes, or participate in a workshop (get those knitting needles out!) run by a local artist. Her son holds workshops in the holidays and her daughter makes a fabulous coffee too. Dear Mornington Peninsula (M.P), So it’s been a year and a half since I have taken up permanent residency with you but it didn’t take me long to develop a giddy crush on your redeeming features and captivating charm. With hubby, one kid and another on the way, we packed up our inner city unit that was about to explode under the pressure of too much stuff and a growing family and got in the car to embark on a new adventure. On the trip I thought about all you have to offer. A little stretch of paradise that boasts affordable housing, space, glorious beaches, parks, shopping and top notch restaurants, cafes and wineries. Not to mention the inhabitants – who are some of the friendliest people I have ever met.

education facilities for young families like us to choose from. We found one called Pelican, staffed by warm, caring people in particular one young woman called Tara who managed to make my lively, intense and sometimes anxious 4 year old daughter feel supported, safe and loved.

Six months pass and life has been busy. I drive back and forth into town for work three times a week (mental note: find a job down here, much less stressful) and hubby works full time and fills his weekends with painting and minor home renos. During this time you have been kind to us M.P, you don’t have any negative attributes. There are so many places to entertain the children. You offer an endless stretch of beach with its yellow grainy sand, moody blue water and beach goers occupying the Opening the doors of our spacious new brightly coloured beach boxes which cost 4 bedroom house, it felt so liberating to more than my first flat. Parks galore, you be surrounded by so much space. With can always guarantee there will be another delight I watched my energetic 4 year old happily run around the plentiful garden and mum or dad endlessly pushing their kid on the swing, bored and desperate for some hubby go straight to the large tin shed out adult interaction. Best of all no-one cares the back and hurriedly unlock it, intent on exploring its wonders. His smile gives away if you are clad in unflattering trackie dacks his master plan for an immediate conversion covered in baby spew! to a ‘man cave’. A place to escape to when In no time baby is due. The tiny hospital called ‘man caves’ don’t often exist in the city and The Bays which has been around forever how lucky are we. has a wonderful, nurturing environment staffed by caring, competent midwives. One of the brilliant things about you M.P During my C- Section the operating theatre is that you have lots of child care and

staff are efficient and calm. The operation is performed without a hitch by one of only four seasoned and highly competent obstetricians on the Peninsula. I received 100% support from the midwives and no pressure when I struggle again with breast feeding, post-op complications and anxiety. A polar opposite experience to the one I had at the posh city hospital with my first born. Let’s face it, you have everything M.P and that crush I initially confessed to has developed into a full blown love affair. You are in my heart now and you’re not getting rid of me anytime soon. So, in this column I will continue to boast about your features whilst I write a light hearted account about the highs and lows of being a Mum on the Mornington Peninsula.

It’s Easy to Grow your Business

Yeah Sure!!! It’s easy to grow your business… ”Yeah sure. How do I do that when I’m so busy running my business that I don’t even have time to think about growing it?

Sound familiar? It’s a common reply in an age of never ending cutbacks and time constraints, where it just seems too difficult to do anything without spending huge amounts of money or working 20 hours a day. What happened to those dreams you had when you started your business? Read on and you’ll find some simple but powerful ways to grow your business and learn (or be reminded of!) some key definitions and the main areas you need to focus on to make that dream a reality. Open your mind to new ideas - If you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got. Simple! When you learn, you grow and when you grow so too will your business. The exciting part is that the more you learn the better you’ll get at the game of business

even a minute of your life, you’ll never get that time back. You’ve got to INVEST rather than SPEND your time. As an owner of a business you’ve got to be certain that every activity you undertake, every job you do, every minute of your working day is invested in doing something that only YOU can do. Always ask yourself this question - “What will give me the best ‘return on investment’ for my time?” Cost reduction versus income growth - So many business people focus their whole life on cost reduction. Working long hours just to save a wage, cutting costs just to make ends meet. Now keeping costs down is still one of the most important areas of business but, if you really want to grow your business you’ve got to put more of your time into income generation than you do cost cutting. Remember, if you were to cut your costs by as much as you possibly could and still leave your company running, you’d probably only add about 10 or 20% to your bottom line. Yet through building your income, the bottom line is limitless. Distribution and marketing - Business has

lding great relationships Have a Clear Outcome: This works in all aspects of human relations, whether it is in sales or matters of which will keep the friendship. Knowing where you want an interaction r.

to lead will help you guide it there in a thousand little ways. Learn from Others: Whether you are talking to the labourer or the president of a country, ask questions and be genuinely interested; there is something to learn from every person’s experiences. Add More Value than You Receive. “This is tough one sometimes” The universe is like a great bank account and every interaction is an opportunity to make a deposit (add value) or a withdrawal (subtract value) in the emotional bank account. th others is not just You are rich in your ability to add value all the time, with, (although it might no matter what your background or circumstance. people) it’s actually a skill Trust that the universe will pay interest (reward d mastered with effort. you) for having a surplus of deposits. o much joy from our e ability to connect with Consider Lifetime Value: People are people for he most rewarding things as long as they are alive. In business, this means the value of a customer is more than their first transaction. two major parts. And both of them are important, You’ve got to put 50% of your time, effort and investment into distribution, that is, getting your products and services to the market place. The other half of your time should be spent on sales and marketing - getting the market place to come to your products and services. Lifetime value - How much are you going to spend in your lifetime on something as simple as toilet paper? How much will the average customer in your business spend with you over a lifetime? You must establish this long term view of their value before you can appreciate how important it is to develop a relationship with customers and ensure everything is done to keep them as long as possible. Test and measure. This is the KEY!!!

You cannot manage what you do not measure. And how do you grow if you don’t know the areas to work on? When it comes to your business you must find out what’s working and what’s not. One of the big problems with marketing is that many people think their ad is bringing in more business than it really is because they don’t properly test and measure. Ask each and every customer and prospect where they heard about you and your business. This will give you an idea of what’s been working and what hasn’t. In-house Stylist verses Professional Stylist

Its an interesting conversation. In the world of fashion the title of Stylist is being used loosely in today’s society. Sales assistants are being called In house stylists and the Professional stylist’s role is being mis- understood and misused by some. It is a trend that the beauty industry faced some time ago, where the word ‘spa’ was replacing the word salon. Yet most salons were not representing the ‘true spa’ sanctuary. It became a quirky and new form of marketing. Is there a difference from ‘in-house stylist to ‘professional stylist’? Yes Are there similarities? Yes Are they the same? No So....... what’s the difference between IN house styling and Professional styling? That’s a great question. Let’s chat about comparisons. An ‘In house Stylist’ can be another name for a shop/sales assistant. The In house stylist is someone who knows their stock and product inside out and back to front. They are very knowledgeable about the brands they have in store and how each piece mixes and blends

with the other. An In house stylist recommends to the customer which product goes with what and can put an outfit together from their product range. In House styling can sometimes be about sales and targets. Professional stylists are quite different. How? First they do a style consultation to find out who their customer is. What he or she wants their brand or style to represent? This is where the stylist and their client form a great bond of trust and insight. They then look at their client’s body shape working out which styles will suit best. Next comes the wardrobe makeover (this is my most favourite part). This enables their clients to have an opportunity to throw out some older pieces they no longer want and keep pieces that work for them. This is a very insightful process for the professional stylist as it allows them to plan and work out what pieces their client’s wardrobe lacks. Have you ever bought a piece of clothing only to get it home and discover you have something very similar if not identical? This is because we have a part of our brain that is called the RAS or ‘reticular activator system. This is where our brain always looks for the

Prada Dolce & Gabbana Rayban

Jono Hennessy Face a Face Ted Baker Oroton

same same. A professional stylist helps stretch their client’s RAS, and shows them options to complete their wardrobe styling. Once this is all established the professional stylist researches many different shops and hunts out the best products and clothing styles for their customer. They put together multiple outfits from minimal pieces. Professional personal stylists have no hidden agenda when shopping, they have no targets or budgets

to reach. They work purely with your style category, body shape and budget in mind always working to achieve their client’s outcome. Our style starts with the clothing we choose to wear and extends past our wardrobe, to our physiology and our choice in just about everything, demonstrating what we value and how we value ourself. A great personal stylist helps you look and feel the best version of yourself. Once you have worked with a personal stylist you will notice an immediate impact on how you interact with yourself and the world around you. Shopping with a personal stylist is smart shopping and saves you money and time. I guess the big question that you may be asking is can both types of stylists work together to benefit you their customer? The answer is YES. If both their skills wisely, you, the client, comes out the winner. I found this quote from the guru in designer fashion, which I felt was really fitting to our conversation in this article. “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is an instant language” Miuccia Prada.

Stylishly yours, Beckie x

MANUFACTURED LOCALLY FITS PERFECTLY A GREAT shirt is defined by its style, cut, quality and comfort. But it is even more special when you know it has been locally designed and manufactured. Peninsula clothing company Off the Kuff not only strives to fit everybody with the perfect shirt every time, but customers can also walk away knowing they are supporting local industry. And company director Melanie Robinson wouldn’t have it any other way. Mel, aka designer, entrepreneur and mother of two, runs Off the Kuff from a modest factory in Mornington. She designs the clothing herself and, with the help of her dynamic team, does all the fabric cutting, pattern making and distribution from inhouse. Off the Kuff is well-known for its Carla Spring collection, an established Peninsula label that caters to the mature woman. Featuring a range of shirts and blouses designed by Mel and made by manufacturers in Mornington, Cranbourne and Langwarrin, the Carla Spring label uses only quality fabrics made up of mostly natural fibres. From vibrant colours and interesting patterns to the meticulous details included in every shirt, customers can be sure they are getting quality and style with every purchase. Carla Spring is not only for the discerning

buyer seeking stylish and figure flattering clothing, but also has a high emphasis on comfort. It is important to Mel that every item not only fits well, but endures against repeated wash and wear. The label is currently stocked in about 80 specialty boutiques across Australia, including local stores Jillia Boutique in Mt Martha and Femtique in Mt Eliza. Being Australian-made provides Mel with a unique ability to monitor quality throughout the manufacturing process and also allows for flexibility within the range to cater for individual stores and their client needs. Since moving her humble operation from backyard garages into a proper factory, Off the Kuff has gone from strength to strength. Mel now employs two fashion design students from Box Hill TAFE and is seeking take on her own machinists in the future. The company also manufactures clothing for up-and-coming local designers, who might not otherwise have access to such resources. Mel is already starting to promote next summer’s range, which will see a dress and pant introduced for the first time into the Carla Spring collection. While Carla Spring is already experiencing success on a national scale, Mel remains optimistic that more Peninsula stores will jump on board and help support the local label. PARADISE IS HERE

There is no need to escape to a tropical oasis this winter because Saya Beaute Bar has brought its own version right here to the Mornington Peninsula. This new, all-inclusive beauty retreat in Somerville has got everything you need to feel like you are miles away.

A Taste of Paradise on the Peninsula

Let mother-daughter duo Joy and Aleshia and their team of beauty experts cater to your every pampering need, whether it be a massage, facial, waxing, tanning, manicure or pedicure. Step inside the detox sauna for total mind and body relaxation. This completely private sauna will help you sweat out the bad toxins while alleviating muscle pain, improving skin conditions and boosting your immune system. Save money by bringing a friend along and gossiping while you both burn calories. A desire to bring authentic Pacific island beauty rituals to the Peninsula recently led Saya’s staff members all the way to Fiji, where they did some intensive training with ‘Pure Fiji’, a company that manufactures beauty products from Fijian plant extracts. There they learnt how to perform a range of body treatments, including the traditional Fijiian scalp and oil massage. Aleshia says Saya Beaute Bar stocks exclusive and specialty products which can be difficult to find elsewhere on the Peninsula, including the Pure Fiji range and two organic spray tanning solutions. They also sell Young Blood mineral cosmetics which are free from paraben, talc, oils and fragrances. Aleshia has been in the industry for eight years and is a qualified beauty therapist specialising in waxing, particularly Brazilians, and tanning. Siobhan, the salon’s other beauty therapist, is an expert when it comes to eyelash extensions and skin care. Laura is a fully qualified nail technician who is also on her way to becoming a qualified beauty therapist. The launch of Saya Beaute Bar, which offers treatments for women and men, is a dream come true for Aleshia and Joy. As long-time Somerville residents, they were tired of seeing locals having to travel elsewhere to receive beauty treatments. P. (03) 5977 6790 WINTER

“There is no idea too big or too small,” Corey says.

JP is a local foodie and regular diner at restaurants and cafes across the peninsula, in this column he gives a rundown of his experiences each season

Chocolat of Mornington

This place is a fairly new little treat for anyone who enjoys fine, freshly made pastries of all tidings. Everyday there is something a little different. Just to mention a few: Tomato, red onion, bocconcini, and Persian fetta galettes; Donuts; Meringue Towers; Lemon tarts; Hot Cross Buns (sugar brioche with mango); Nougat pomme; Fruit flan; Castel; Capsicum & spinach quiche The staff here are very friendly and will assist with any of your choosings, the best bit is they know what they are talking about as they probably made them too! Am I just getting old fashioned or is this how it should be when you enter a shop? PS the coffee is lovely too! Chocolat of Mornington Shop 6, 59 Barkly St Mornington Ph 5976 4902

TWO BUOYS DROMANA

‘Progressive and hits the spot’, I have heard plenty of good things about Two Buoys, so I thought it was time to check it for myself. Sun setting on the water mid-week and it’s time to experience sleepy Dromana. Parking is a breeze and friendly faces are scattered everywhere. Service was immediate, warm and friendly. Our first course (salt chilli squid) was fast out of the kitchen, which was great as we got there later than expected and we were starving. I must admit the chilli was very light on, but made up for with the freshness of the squid. Our waitress had some wonderful recommendations for us so we went for tuna Carpaccio with wasabi greens and fresh horseradish. Being spoilt in Japan, I must say this was not the best cut or flavoured, but the Carpaccio alone was definitely fresh and good tuna. A flat bread ‘house made’ with roasted pumpkin, blue cheese and truffled honey was next, this was a good size AND WAS SIMPLY GORGEOUS. We complemented this with the recommended roast beetroot salad that came with roasted walnuts and horseradish cream. I have to say we were very satisfied as we paid homage to the ocean view and sun-drenched skyline. While we were not disappointed, some of the flavours were a little misleading and timid. Two Buoys keep up the good work.

My partner had the crab claw and this was a good serve with clean white fresh looking meat. As we proceeded into main, the coconut rice came out with my fried chicken Pad Thai along with the beef salad. Both dishes had some great flavour but again lacked in the main ingredients, chicken and beef. It really was the old school load up of onion, carrots and sauce. I was told this was great service and fabulous value food. It appears to me they have dropped the ball in the value arena. I would love for them to redeem themselves as we cannot ever have enough thai food choices! I will return soon. Thai By The Sea 63B Barkly St Mornington Ph: 5976 8040

THE ROYAL HOTEL MORNINGTON

Now it’s been a long time since I have spent an afternoon at the originator but after hearing all the chatter I thought what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon, than a welcome back to ‘the royal’. Entering from the back, the public bar has had a complete overhaul, mod grass on the floor, white furniture and completely different décor. Tap beer has been extended and as I sip on my first pot I peruse the bar menu. What to choose? Well I have to say after sitting down with my circle, the food came out quick and seamless - nachos, chicken parma, cannelloni, steak sandwich, bangers and mash. Everyone was pleased. Cheekily I tasted everyone’s and have to say the cannelloni and bangers and mash were the food envy choices. After satisfying our tastebuds it was time to venture into satisfying our ears with the Grand Wazoo. These guys have been around since Adam was a pup and yes they’ve still got it. Very appropriate having a 13 piece funk and soul band doing the business in the front lounge, the vibe was fantastic and great to see the Royal revamped to its former glory. I am definitely going to check out their bistro menu and extensive wine list in the months to come because this is how it should be done. Let’s hope the food in the front is as good as the food in the back ‘cos you can’t just rely on the view and some music - even if both are sensational! Apple Espresso @ Tullys

Next time I am definitely going to give the extensive drinks menu Excited to be told about something new and tucked away and a good nudge as they have a vast array of locally produced wines, with the unrestricted access to all the local meat and produce beers, muscats, and special cocktails. I will need a designated available at Tully’s, I was expecting to experience exciting driver that night! seasonal dishes that took full advantage of this. Couldn’t have Two Buoys been further from the truth. Everything on the menu was 209 Point Nepean Rd Dromana Ph 5981 8488 incredibly generic. The place looks to be Italian inspired or something close to a rustic café tucked away in Sienna.

Thai by the sea mornington

This is a tucked away little Thai pad that people have been chatting about for ages. Headed down there for the experience. Have to say the Tom Yum served was a lovely start to the meal, the flavour traditional but lacked ingredients, chicken strips and mushrooms only! I can’t say that this is a good start.

INDULGE YOUR SENSES WITH A TASTE OF TRADITION

It’s Caramel and it’s delicious!

Established in 2011, Caramelicious, is a French artisan caramel production outfit, a family owned business that has an obsession with one special delicacy, caramel! Producing four authentic natural handmade caramels, Salted Butter, Cocoa, Cocoa Hazelnut and Vanilla they have won the hearts of many culinary enthusiasts in Australia and internationally. French born Rémi, moved to Australia in 2003, to continue his career as a jockey. After a back injury in 2011. His recovery forced him to stay away from the track for several months. During his convalescence he indulged into his other passion: Cooking! He has turned his passion into a Caramelicious business, with the help of his wife, Breena who saw the potential in Rémi’s delicious caramel concoctions and the rest is living history.

HANDMADE FROM THE HIGHEST QUALITY LOCAL INGREDIENTS FREE FROM ARTIFICIAL COLOURS, FLAVOURS, & ADDED PRESERVATIVES. GLUTEN FREE.

So what’s so good about their caramel, you may ask? Rémi says their caramels are unique in their flavours and their recipe is over five generations old. “They have been hand-made with love, care and passion, not plonked together by some piece of machinery on a production line. The taste of our caramels is of course the best of traditional French caramel flavour and we use only the freshest, finest natural ingredients, which are measured prior to cooking to produce the perfect blend. Our caramel is also gluten free.” Rémi and Breena only use the freshest and finest ingredients available to make their exotic and unique caramels, “We slowly simmer the caramel in small batches in copper bowls to create a soft and buttery rich gourmet caramel. This allows us to control the temperature and flavour. Without good timing and patience, perfection cannot be made to create the smooth and tasty caramel.” Mornington Life readers can purchase Caramelicious’s products via phone, online or by visiting one of their market stalls around Victoria; at the Craft market Red-Hill at stand 298 or at the Mornington stand 89. Updates of Caramelicious’s market stalls and distributors can be found on their website. What adds to the uniqueness of their business is the fact that Caramelicious is environmentally sustainable, with a special developed Green Star rating packaging. HOT STUFF !!

NEW MIDDLE EASTERN restaurant for Mt Eliza

Waiting with anticipation as they rip the paper off the windows and the sign comes up open for business….YES My wife and I are so mad for Indian food that we went there for 6 weeks and nothing has come close to tasting like India until Rasoi opened. We waited for the craziness to die down and booked a couple of months later so we could get a table and not have to wait for hours on end.

Mt Eliza will soon see the opening of a new and highly anticipated restaurant, 1001 Nights. The restaurant, owned and operated by Mark and Nina Syawish, will feature traditional Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, bringing a fresh new dining opportunity to the region.

Yes a Monday night, how civilised and easy to slide into the working week. It was still packed!

Mark and Nina are well-known members of the Mt Eliza community. The couple have lived in Mt Eliza for many years and are proud of their involvement in the local community and support of clubs through their (now sold) chicken shop.

Onion Bhjis to start with and vegetarian samosas, well that set the mood. Lightly fried and delicate in flavour the Spanish onion was a delight, followed by pastry that was like a melting moment filled with vegetable goodness for a samosa. As my son would say OMG!!!

The restaurant will be located centrally on the main corner of Mt Eliza’s shopping precinct, where Vogue House was previously located. As chef, Mark will bring inspiration from his experiences in working internationally to the table, and believes the restaurant will be a popular choice for locals.

We went for our predictable favourites, daah makani (was informed it was his father’s own special recipe) so could take that as good, bad or ugly and saag paneer mild. The serves came out with our added little friends; fragrant rice, mango chutney and raita. It smelled good, it looked good and it tasted great! Well done Rasoi for bringing simple yet great Indian food to Mt Martha. Take away I hear is a fairly long wait so ring in early. The BYO is a nice touch to a villagey feel that allows you to be in and out with out any real parking worries.

Making the venture to establishing the restaurant was an easy choice for the couple. “We wanted to bring something new and special to people from the area,” Mark said. “There are no restaurants that will be like it on the whole Mornington Peninsula, it will be a great surprise”. And open 7days from 4pm (5pm in Mt Eliza), now that’s another great idea! The Rasoi Mt Martha: 5 Bay Rd, Ph: 5974 2323 The Rasoi Mt Eliza: 26 Ranelagh Dve, Ph: 9775 3111

The restaurant is set to open in the coming months, and is sure to be a one-of-a-kind experience for locals and tourists alike. Keep an eye out for the announcement of the official opening night, an event not to be missed!

HARBA HITS THE SPOT EVERY SEASON Enjoying a fresh lease on life, Harba Oyster Bar and Grill has risen to success based on a keen sense of providing what people want.

JUPPY’S MOVIE LAUNCH AT HARBA

At one time recently, plans were proposed to ‘knock the building down’ and construct something new. Those thoughts have now been shelved. ‘Visionary’ owner John Crossin has committed to a new lease and is currently embarking on plans to suit and celebrate. Small renovations and a nice lick of paint will come to be noticed. Apart from the addition of a few winter warmers, such as long-braised shanks, Harba’s now tried and true menu will stay largely the same over the chilly months. Harba’s fish is supplied from the monger in Main Street and as much local produce as possible is used - to help other local businesses survive. “Our seafood platter is better than superb and is incredible value at $99,” John said. “Last weekend a welltravelled customer told me that he had been all over the world and that our seafood platter was equal to the best anywhere.”

Live cabaret shows from tribute performers remain regular all year and on Sunday arvo songstress Sarah Gardner and friends have established a fine following. Diners can choose to sit on the screened front deck or inside on cushioned cane chairs that fit well with the contemporary feel.

The rice-cracker crusted tuna is served with lime-scented sticky rice, avocado wasabi mousse, a sweet carrot and dill salad. “It’s a phenomenal dish, absolutely magical,” said John.

Don’t miss the 2 course lunch for just $30 including a glass of house wine or pot of any beer. There are plenty to choose from on the menu and if you are on a business schedule, just let them know, you can easily indulge in this treat during your lunch hour !!!

Chef Brad sources Harba’s steaks from Mt Eliza Meats. The menu boasts five classy cuts including a #5 score wagyu strip loin grown on the Darling Downs. Tuesday is discount steak night.

Every Tuesday is still Steak & Oyster Night. Thursday night upstairs is Date Night, bring your own date or make one with Harba! It’s just $10 for nibbles and live music by Sarah Gardener 7:30pm till close!

Harba’s upstairs Sunset Bar serves as a function room and musical venue and has evolved to meld perfectly with the downstairs eatery.

Harba is located at 786 on the Esplanade in Mornington, phone 5975 1183. Open lunch and dinner Tuesday-Sunday

“Harba is a package aimed at giving people what they want in the friendliest way. My aim is to improve every aspect of that,” said manager Corin Peters.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO TERMINUS Making the most of Flinders Hotel’s unique position on the peninsula’s southern coast, newly appointed general manager Nicholas Parkinson-Bates aims to take the reborn hotel to greater heights. Formerly a manager at upmarket leisure group Amanresorts, throughout South East Asia, Nicholas lives at Red Hill with wife Amy and his two youngsters, Isabella and William. During his time as GM of The Islington Hotel in Tassie, it won the award for best boutique hotel in Australia. While the Flinders pub is all things to all people during the tourist season, at this time of year it becomes more of a destination in itself. A resting place. Combining, in one pub, boutique accommodation, a chef’s hat restaurant headed by award winning chef Pierre Khodja, and a contemporary bistro-come-public-bar, all largely within a perimeter of gardens, courtyards and alfresco dining. Flinders Hotel remains an icon in the region, with a legacy harking back to the 19th Century. Nicholas is excited about embracing his new role, teamed up with Pierre, to offer something special. “My position as GM is a new appointment and my challenge is to bring the many facets here together. I want people to come here and enjoy one great experience, and I am aiming to help that grow,” Nicholas said. “Terminus restaurant is a gem and people are often surprised by

what it is and where it is; tucked away in a busy hotel. It’s a lovely room; formal, minimal, but it’s really all about the food,” he added. Pierre subtly matches North African spices with high grade ingredients and traditional French methods and know-how. The teaming of tastes has garnered rave reviews and a Chef’s Hat in the 2013 Age Good Food Guide. A dedicated herb and vegie garden is thriving to the rear of the property. Beyond that, the finest local ingredients are enthusiastically embraced. Popular dishes include a fillet of local snapper partnered with mussels, saffron and ginger. Wagyu brisket is matched with prunes and apricots, leek, preserved lemon risotto and cauliflower. It is hard for words to do real justice to the combination of stimulating spices and subtle flavours that languish and linger. The bistro menu also features many a taste sensation such as sardine fritters with house-made harissa mayo. The smoked trout and organic chicken croquettes come with apple cider mayonnaise. The desserts, including Turkish delight soufflé, are to die for and are detailed on the pub’s website. Flinders Hotel is in Cook Street, phone 5989 0201. Web: flindershotel.com.au

Shop Ate Cafe and Store Mt Eliza

Food from owner Guy Mirabella is always a treat. He has a small shop that has to be one of the most popular eating and coffee spots in Mt. Eliza. My wife and I entered this cute little arrangement and sat down to our lunch. I had chosen the Penne Matriciana and my partner had chosen the leek and feta tart. The food was wonderful, home cooked, simple, well presented, fresh and filling. The serves were just right. This place is a little squeezy, but only if you want a little privacy over lunch (so maybe that’s not really required). That sharing vibe certainly adds a good feeling, bunched up all together and all there for the same purpose, good food. I have to go back for the breakfast experience, as it looks spectacular. Another wonderful addition to this little gem is the extensive catering options that range from hampers, weekends, cards, private dinners, cocktail parties, Christmas functions etc. The menu is simply an inspiration and for anything you may have on the horizon I am sure you and your guests will love it.

would be nice to think that local produce supporters can ramp it up in their food as well as their choice in drinks. Somers General Store 2 The Boulevard, Somers Ph: 5983 2070

GRAZEN CAFE & THE LOFT Well coffee is becoming more and more of a delight on the Mornington Peninsula and Corey and his ever friendly team have it sorted. Campos coffee surprisingly is not anywhere else that I can see on the peninsula and this bean trader has the essential mix to get your day started. Set on Racecourse Road, parking is easy, décor simple and food that complements take out or sit down. Corey is a true foodie and its shows in his menu.

You will not be disappointed.

I cannot wait to trawl through the delights he has on offer, the choice is extensive and also child friendly. Watch this space as I will be back for more.

RESTAURANT Soy of Mornington

The setting is something out of a storybook, the long and winding road until you get to the end and there’s the beach. The salty air wafts and takes you away as you step into the old world general store. Washed floor boards, eclectic signage and bits and bobs scattered all around. Yes I have been transported somewhere else. The service was personal and warm, house-made bread came out with dukkah and this was delicious, the bread had been flame grilled lightly dressed with oil and a perfect starter to the evening. I love the fact that all drinks were locally sourced from the beer to the red and white wines and such a great selection. Well done. The belly pork came out next and I must say a daring attempt at something new. Belly pork slow roasted on a bed of fennel and barley risotto just didn’t generate any excitement. The risotto seemed out of place, the pear slices on top lacked flavour and the belly pork was missing the crackling to excite the dimension I was looking for. It was a generous serve and I feel east meets west on this occasion did not work so well. To follow, my partner was presented ginger and soy glazed salmon; with wilted bok choy, vermicelli and sesame salad. This was also presented beautifully, vibrant colours and a good size serve. Once the meal was underway comment was made that the vermicelli was well over cooked and seemed like a ball of rice mush. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the bok choy complemented it very well. All in all food on the peninsula has started to really raise the bar, Somers has the potential to be one of the greats, although it has attempted to do something out of the box, it may be that they just didn’t get there on this occasion. It

The only restaurant that I have found offering yum cha daily for lunch. The setting is very modern with an Asian flair of the 30’s. This second generation family of Chinese restaurants has got it right. Reading some reviews online I was aware service, prices and MSG could be a problem. Don’t believe everything you read online! I walked in and immediately saw a spacious, friendly, fresh and inviting dining area. Now let’s get down to business, Yum Cha is what I came for: bean curd rolls, chicken feet with black bean, ox tripe with black bean and turnip pastry are about as extreme as they come for the sleepy Peninsula. I must say these were not the favourites on our table. The table did gobble down prawn dumplings, spare ribs, spring rolls, deep fried won tons, king prawn on toast, pan fried pork dumplings and sharks fin dumplings between mutterings of ‘mmm’, ‘great’ and ‘any more’. The bamboo steamers came out one after the other as we enjoyed the YUM CHA experience, premium wines and beverages complemented including traditional Chinese green tea. This is a great experience for old and new lovers of Chinese food. Getting charged for dipping sauces was a bit cheeky at $2.50 each but I do understand it was the Chinese who invented money after all! If you want to say thankyou in Chinese, try saying doh-jayh. Manhattan in Mornington Manhattan in Mornington has certainly made an impact since its opening just six months ago. Without a doubt the restaurant is an unexpected gem, hidden just off Main Street Mornington. With an open dining room that is relaxed yet stylish, the restaurant is setting the standard for local dining. Not only has the restaurant become a favourite for locals, but each day its increasing popularity is earning Manhattan in Mornington a stellar reputation. Owner and maître-d’ Rose says she is excited by how quickly her restaurant has become known to the community “already having regulars is so fantastic”. The restaurant prides itself on modern Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. With seasonal produce specials and desserts that are simply sinful, it cannot be ignored for a foodie experience – and best of all, the restaurant is open seven days, 10am for breakfast ‘till late. Pop by at any time during the day and be greeted by friendly staff that can treat you to morning tea. Need a destination for coffee and a bite to eat between lunch and dinner? The kitchen doesn’t close, so make this your destination for those afternoon catch-ups, or perhaps a sneaky cocktail on the heated and enclosed outdoor balcony before dinner. “We are starting High Tea on Sunday” Rose explains. Ring to make an enquiry about enjoying a lazy lunch High Tea style at Manhattan in Mornington. With an elegant style and fantastic menu, Manhattan in Mornington is an obvious choice for your next lunch or dinner out. Have a big group? Not a problem. The restaurant’s mezzanine floor is perfect for groups of 25 or more. Not only this, but on both Wednesday and Thursday nights, as well as Sunday mornings, you can catch live music with your meal. at The Royal “There is so much going on at The Royal Hotel!” tells owner Philippa Shaw, and it’s true. Winter does not mean any slowing down for the historic Mornington pub.

Both the Bistro and Tavern provide a cosy place to dine for lunch and dinner. Most exciting is the introduction of a brand new separate menu specially designed for the Tavern. “The new menu was introduced in February and since then has seen great popularity” Philippa explains. The pub classic meals cost less than $20 – enjoy a burger or

steak sandwich, or perhaps nachos and fish ‘n chips. Each meal is made with passion from quality ingredients; best enjoyed in the famous beer garden with views extending over the bay to the city, or for those colder days inside by the lovely warm fire. The Bistro is also offering up some irresistible deals for winter, with a two course lunch for just $30 on weekdays, all pub classics for $20 on Mondays, a seafood platter for two for just $60 on Wednesdays, and the famous soup and roast for $29.50 on Thursdays. So instead of wondering what’s for dinner, let the guys at The Royal do all the hard work for you! The ever-popular High Tea will also be taking place at The Royal soon, on each Sunday from 3pm in the stunning Victoriana room – who can resist those tiny cakes, sandwiches and tea?! “As an excited participant in 2013’s Mornington Winter Jazz Festival, the dining room will be transformed into a jazz club the two nights of the 7th and 8th of June” says Philippa. Enjoy talented artists Vince Jones on Friday and Andy Cowan on Saturday playing their cool tunes during your Royal dinner. For all enquiries, let the team at The Royal Hotel help you out. Head chef Kacey Byrne, formerly of the Pavillion, will be cooking up modern Australian cuisine with a twist. 3 DUCKS MODERN EUROPEAN Dave Morley’s idea was seeded eight years ago, around the time he has his first child. It was a desire to establish a modern family eatery in his home town; a place that offered good quality dining that would be relaxed and affordable. The result? 3 Ducks, a popular new eatery featuring a modern European Menu. With mains kept under $30 and show bags for kids (so they stay busy while Mum and Dad chat over a glass of wine!) 3 Ducks is breathing new life into the tired Mt Eliza food scene. Dave grew up on the Peninsula before living most of his adult life in Melbourne, but has recently returned to the area with Tobey and their three children. The couple also owns Six Keys in Beaumaris, which has been running successfully for the past four years and, to their delight, was awarded four stars in The Age last year.

( 92 The peninsula’s funky SQUARE magazine www.morningtonlife.com.au

Dave has worked at well-known venues such as Victoria Hotel, Half Moon Brighton and the Prince of Wales in St Kilda. After meeting his wife, the pair had several businesses together including Mode Restaurant Bar St Kilda, The Southern Cross and The Clarendon Hotels and eventually Six Keys. Dave says the Three Ducks is based on the same concept as the successful Six Keys. With a focus on French and Italian culinary styles, 3 Ducks’ head chef Milan Cushway, formerly of France-Soir in South Yarra, Brighton Baths and Bistro Thierry in Toorak, will be cooking up a range of hearty winter meals this season. These will include delectable cassoulet dishes, delicious rustic pies and Sunday roasts, plus a range of soups to warm your belly, and not to mention plenty of duck! The restaurant has been renovated and completely redesigned by Tobey. It has been opened up and transformed

with an eclectic ‘modern’ vintage feel. A mixture of old and new melded together create a comfortable and charming space, gives a unique styling and sets the venue apart from others in the area. 3 Ducks has a swag of vegetarian options and 90 per cent of its menu is gluten free. There are also more than 70 wines on the wine list, including a solid range of Peninsula varieties. For a modern family dining experience that ticks all the boxes, you can’t pass by 3 Ducks. Even the kids will love it! 34 Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza Open lunch and dinner Tues to Sun. Ph: 9787 0200 www.3ducks.com.au fresh every season

Didn’t we enjoy a lovely long summer? Balmy warm days seemed to go from October through to April this year. So many customers enjoyed taking their meals in the garden and the open deck. Children were still chasing balls and playing right up to the end of daylight saving. It was very enjoyable but the rain needed to come and finally autumn arrived.

$10 Tradie Lunch every weekday. That hot lunch is quite often enjoyed by our seniors as well.

With the onset of the cooler days our need for warming food starts. No longer are we looking for salads and light meals, we now demand hearty soups and filling casseroles.

And if you really just want to curl up in front of the fire in your pjs, then you can call through, pick up a take away and still enjoy a lovely meal at home.

These are the changes that occur to the restaurant’s menu and this year we are striving to provide more slow cooked options for our customers to enjoy. We are aiming to provide the food that the average person enjoys but doesn’t have time for. Our Head Chef Brent Gould excels at this style of cooking and quite often has lamb shanks slow cooking for 6 hours or wagyu brisket simmering for up to 10 hours.

We have started our Wednesday night roast which consists of 2 courses for $22. Quite often this is the night to gather the family together for a catch up meal that Mum doesn’t have to cook.

Yes, Heritage Tavern is now offering a Take Away service. Whether it is pub style parma and chips, a gourmet pizza, meals for the kids or a sumptuous slow cooked option, you can now phone or email your order through. As part of our May offer we are promoting our locally produced Mock Sparkling Pear Juice.

Example...Convert just 10 downlights in your household, more often the most used, and cut your power consumption from 500W to just 100W per hour, as an added bonus all LED downlights come with a 3 year warranty and last up to 10 times longer than your standard halogen lamp, which saves money and time. CES has a showroom fitted out with LED downlights for you to view, making it easier to learn more about LED’s and choose the right LED light for you. Winter is also a great time to light up your gardens and house, with the darker nights gardens look amazing with path or tree lights or even your driveway and entrance lit up, you’ll be sure to impress your guests. If you have existing garden and outdoor lighting, replacing your old halogen lights with new LED’s again reduces your power consumption. Make the switch today and save.

They have proudly welcomed their son, Jason, into the company fold and have enjoyed watching him excel as their upholstery apprentice.

• Fully Insured

Gerard, an upholsterer of 39 years himself, is a strong believer in keeping traditional craftsmanship alive. With his keen eye for detail, he doesn’t mind doing things the hard way, so long as it produces the best results. Thus, it has been disheartening for him to witness a decline in the industry.

“You can’t find anyone with traditional upholstery qualifications these days - it just isn’t practiced anymore,” Gerard said. “I’m still using techniques that were around hundreds of years ago. It is about bringing that quality, that traditional background, and reinterpreting it for today’s contemporary market.”

Sorrento Furniture’s ability to produce beautiful, lovingly crafted yet modern pieces to suit the buyer’s individual taste has led to its growth in popularity. The Mornington-based company also designs and manufactures dining chairs, banquette seating and upholstered beds and bedheads. BETTER IN THE

BEDROOM ACCORDING to national study, over 1.2 million Australians suffer from sleep disorders. Clearly those people haven’t been to Bedshed Mornington! With its full-range of bedding, mattresses, bed linen and bedroom furniture, there is no reason you ever have to have a bad night’s sleep again. “All of our sprung mattresses are made in Melbourne and they are all asthma and allergen friendly,” says store owner Alan. Bedshed not only stocks the latest in beds, bed frames and mattresses for the entire family, but also boasts an ever-changing variety of toastywarm doonas and quilt cover sets, cloud-like pillows and comfortable sheets. “We definitely have the largest range of bed linen of any of the Bedshed stores in Victoria,” Alan said. “With the change of season, people are now starting to think about electric blankets. We have a full range of these, everything from the basic to the premium, which have separate adjustable temperatures for the feet and body. All are fully fitted, with some models machine washable.” While other furniture and bedding stores have been and gone over the years, family-run Bedshed, located at the Peninsula Homemaker Centre, will be celebrating its eighth birthday come June. Alan says many of the staff members have been there almost as long. “We’re like a family,” he says of the team. “We don’t have a high staff turnover, so they must enjoy working here.”

BUILD YOUR

DREAM PAD WITH HALLBURY HOMES Hallbury Homes has been building homes in the South East of Melbourne and on the Mornington Peninsula for over 24 years. Originally established by Cliff and Nicol Hall, Hallbury Homes has grown from a small family based building company to become one of Melbournes leading new home builders. Glenn Smith, director at Hallbury homes says his business is underpinned by a strong commitment to customer service. “Hallbury homes provides a custom design service for clients who want something unique without the architect designed home price tag. We also specialise in multi-unit development projects and knockdownrebuild projects throughout Melbourne’s South Eastern suburbs.” Whether you’re after a single or double storey home clients may choose from Hallbury’s selection of designs or their own. Hallbury Homes is the 2011 and 2012 HIA Victorian Professional Small Builder of the Year, and also National Builders Group’s current Builder Member of the Year which Glenn says is a great honour. Hallbury Homes builds throughout the South East of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Western Gippsland, and through their Hallbury North division into Melbourne’s new northern suburbs. With the business supported by energized owners and staff that are excited about Hallbury homes, Glenn says they are looking forward to growing the business and “endeavor to continue to work closely with each of our clients to build our business on the peninsula. We pride ourselves in the fact that we offer big builder value whilst providing small builder care to our clients, which we know as a great deal of our clientele comes from past client referral.” “We offer comprehensive fixed price quotes and also undertake dualoccupancy and multi-unit developments throughout the Peninsula and South East Melbourne.” Glenn says he encourages readers to view their new display homes open at Casey Fields in Cranbourne.
