Rye couple make waves
on House Rules BY ANDREA KELLETT
Australia’s biggest home renovation show, House Rules, is back and this year a Rye couple star in the Channel 7 juggernaut series. Married surfers Kristie and Leigh are tipped to make serious waves in the
competition. “We’re competitive, very competitive,” Kristie, 36, says. Leigh, 33, is all in. “We’re here to do whatever it takes to win,” he adds. The couple married in 2009 and own a beach shack where they are raising their children Billie, 3, and Kobe, 7. It’s an idyllic spot for this active pair, who moved from the eastern suburbs, drawn to the Peninsula by their love of the ocean and the outdoors. “Where we live is our dream location,” Kristie explains. “But our house is definitely not our dream.” Leigh, a carpenter, started renovations a year ago but work stalled after they ran out of money. “It’s a huge project to do on your own,” he says. “It’s taken me for ever to get it to where it is and I’m knackered.” Stay-at-home mum Kristie adds: “The whole house falls back on Leigh. We can’t pay someone else to do it. We’re far from finished and I’m sick of living on a building site.” So they did what any couple in their situation would do, right? They sent an audition tape to the producers of House Rules, and Kristie’s strong-willed yet lovable character and the couple’s feisty pairing caught their eyes. “We actually had an argument on the tape,” Kristie says, laughing. “I made him do it three times and he cracked it and literally said ‘As if anything’s going to happen out of this. Don’t waste my time, I’ve got to go to footy training’.” They both

roar with laughter. “What makes me upset is all we tried to do is buy a little affordable house in a gorgeous street and make it into a family home,” Kristie says. “There’s no end in sight. This house is sucking the life out of us.” Speaking with Mornington Peninsula Magazine just weeks before the show was due to go to air, both agreed House Rules had been a life-changing experience. “It was awesome,” Leigh says. “I loved it,” Kristie adds. “It’s me. I grew up in a tradie family and I can’t sit still. We’re always doing something.” As for a glimpse of what’s in store, well, you’ll have to tune in. But we did get this: “There’s never a dull moment with us,” Kristie says. “I think we bite off more than we can chew a lot.” House Rules 2018, hosted by Johanna Griggs, sees seven new teams gambling with the most important possession in their lives. To win the ultimate prize, they have to renovate seven houses in seven weeks. The teams travel the country, hand over the keys to their homes and leave their opposition to transform every room in their house. This year’s competition will, producers say, deliver the best results ever seen in House Rules history. House Rules starts this month on Seven.

Kate Cousins (TC ‘96), a Specialist Engineer at General Motors, and Jasmine Chong (TC’05), Creative Director of a New York City Fashion Label, share their inspiring journeys. How did your time at Toorak College lead you to where you are today? KC: I always had a love for Lego and a natural flair for Maths and Science so in Year 12 I studied English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths Methods and Specialist Maths. I noticed the Bachelor of Engineering course description mentioned working with Lego and programming computers so I thought that it would be the perfect degree for me!

JC: At school, I gained the confidence to pursue my love for the arts. I studied product design and textiles and my teachers always provided me with great advice and guidance. Ultimately, this led me to study fashion design at one of the top art schools in the US - the School of Art Institute of Chicago. What challenges and opportunities have you experienced throughout your career? KC: As one of four females in a class of 70, I knew I was entering a male-dominated industry. I see it as a positive though as it has given me many opportunities to stand out and shine. We need more women in STEM as they bring a different perspective to the industry. Companies are keen to recruit talented females too! Working
at General Motors I have been given the opportunity to travel the world testing vehicles and attending conferences. JC: After College, I moved to New York and worked for luxury fashion designers Marchesa, Anna Sui and Halston before launching my own label at New York Fashion Week. Running my own business can be challenging but my determination and work ethic gets me through. Human skills is a better term
The careers of today’s students will be very different to those experienced by the vast majority of their parents. And in their future, the world will be one where ‘soft skills’ – capabilities like problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, emotional intelligence and sound judgement – will be more critical than ever before. As workplaces and careers become more fluid, a distinguishing factor will be the ability to adapt and have the foresight to understand what the next change will be. Baxter brings history and art to public space BY LIZ ROGERS
Next time you’re in Baxter, take a look at the larger-than-life mural donning the side of the Baxter Telephone Exchange. This huge and colourful work depicting the late Benjamin Baxter and a glimpse of Peninsula pastoral life provides a pictorial pick-me-up for residents and future visitors alike. Remembering Baxter’s agricultural heritage, the impressive mural was painted by Melbourne’s Murals in collaboration with students from Bayside Christian College and was unveiled in early March. Celebrating 100 years since the town was named, the mural includes an impressive portrait of Benjamin, who became Melbourne’s first postmaster after moving from Sydney. His wife, Martha, dispatched the first home mail direct from the Hobsons Bay/Port Phillip area before the pair finally headed south and settled in Moorooduc/Baxter in 1840.
Martha arrived in Sydney on The Hope a day earlier than her husband with two small children – Maria, 4, and baby Barbara Gertrude. Benjamin came to Australia on the Prince George. They eventually had nine children and leased 6070ha on the Peninsula before purchasing 132ha after the lease expired in 1860. The property, known as Carrup Carrup, still exists, and so does the original cottage, which provides a real slice of early settler history. The township of Baxter was originally named Baxter’s Flat and sprawled out around the Baxter station and the post office. Benjamin became a member of the Mornington Roads Board and served as a shire councillor and president and acted as a JP in the Frankston area. He was a cattle man and drove the beasts from Sydney to his beloved Carrup Carrup, and he also fancied a bit of horse racing, cricket and was a keen member of the amateur theatrical society. He died in 1872 at his home aged 87; you can find his gravestone and Martha’s – who died in 1906 aged 94 in the Frankston Memorial Park cemetery.

This year, Peninsula Grammar introduced a new and innovative Food Technology program in state-of-the-art facilities for its Years 7 to 10 students. “As a school committed to 21st Century learning, it is the interdisciplinary learning opportunities that our Food Technology Centre gives our students that is the most exciting aspect,” said Principal, Mr Stuart Johnston. A critical component of the program is the

appointment of the right Food Technology teacher and Peninsula is pleased to say they’ve recruited one of the best. Mrs Renae Knight joined Peninsula at the beginning of the year with a Bachelor in Consumer Science and a Diploma of Education. “I think learning about food is incredibly important. It’s not just about the life skills and learning how to cook – although this is clearly a benefit,” she said. “Our young people need to understand the social, ethical, economic and sustainability considerations in the development of food products. It enables them to be informed citizens on so many levels.” Renae has developed a broad-based

Food Technology program encompassing hospitality, food science, nutrition and community engagement and the students are thoroughly enjoying it. “Parent feedback has also been very positive,” laughs Renae. “Especially when the students take home their creations to share the outcome of their work — this has been very popular, even when they don’t always get it quite right!” Peninsula Grammar has invested in a brand new purpose-built state-of-theart Food Technology space featuring top-of-the-range cooking facilities and a co-located classroom for theory and discussion.
“The kitchen facility is the best I have taught in,” said Renae. “It has been designed extremely well, with collaborative learning in mind.” Food Technology is set to grow at Peninsula Grammar, with more specialised elective classes that cover areas such as international cuisine, café-style food and meals suitable for entertaining. Here’s your chance to enter the record books — and all you have to do is look at the moon for 10 minutes. The Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society is taking part in an Australia-wide attempt to set a world record for the most number of stargazers across multiple venues. The current record of 7960 people across 37 locations was set by the Australian National University in 2015. The attempt takes place at The Briars Astronomy Centre in Mount Martha (Melway ref: 151 E1) on Wednesday, May 23. All observers will be required to bring their own telescopes or binoculars (no sharing allowed), but you can buy a 30mm telescope with small tripod for just $8 through the booking portal at facebook. com/events/139925546846659/ — they will be handed out on the night and are yours to keep. Public admission to the event is $5 and includes tea and coffee and a live screening of Stargazing Live with Professor Brian Cox. The attempt will still go ahead if it’s cloudy or rainy and starts at 7pm with registration and telescope collection, followed by Stargazing Live at 8pm and the record attempt between 8-9pm.

The 23-year-old Somerville woman has done it again, finishing third in the national finals of Miss Galaxy Australia 2018, one of the country’s most prestigious pageants. She blitzed the week-long judging in Queensland, which ranged from sit-down interviews and portfolio presentations to swimwear, evening wear, fun fashion parades and more. Mikaela was also crowned Miss Charity, Miss Congeniality and Best in Evening Wear along the way. “Miss Galaxy is one of the largest pageants in Australia,” the Frankston real estate campaign manager explains. “I’ve always done relatively well in it but this time I really gave it my all. Miss Congeniality is my favourite award and I was honored to be awarded the title as it’s voted by the contestants. It’s a nice one to win because you’re being judged by the girls you’re competing against and it’s a true testament to your kind personality.” While there are catwalks and glamorous outfits, that’s not what attracts this bubbly young woman who was crowned Ms Earth Australia 2017. It’s actually the charity work — she raised more than $3000 for the MakeA-Wish Australia in a few short weeks — as well as the discipline, the life experience and the life-long friendships formed along the way.
Mikaela credits her team for her success, especially her mother Joy and sister Aleshia, who own Saya Medispa in Somerville. “It takes a team to prepare for a pageant,” she says, “and my family are my biggest supporters. The team at Saya keep me looking my absolute best from head to toe, especially my skin.” In the pageant world, big hair wins you big points and thanks to hair extensions from Straight to Hairven in Edithvale, Mikaela’s hair is always packing volume. There’s plenty more in store for Mikaela this year, including a ‘power pageant’ in a few months.

Homestead a testament to volunteers’ dedication BY KATE SEARS
Fresh scones with jam and cream, tea and the beautiful Ballam Park Homestead transport you back to the 1800s. This once-derelict building was transformed into the jewel in Frankston’s crown after Frankston Council bought it for “the people of Frankston”. For 50 years the Frankston Historical Society has been caring for the homestead, raising more than $150,000 so far for various projects, refurbishment and maintenance, conducting tours, and running the museum and archive department. All in all, it’s quite an achievement for a group of volunteers. “We just want to see that it is there for the future – for the children of the future, for our grandkids and great-grandkids,” said society president Glenda Viner. Ballam Park Homestead is one of the oldest houses in the region and was built in 1855 for the Liardets, one of Victoria’s pioneering families. A leading architect once described it as “perfectly proportioned”. It’s a fine example of a French-style farmhouse and is listed on the Historic Buildings Council Register in Victoria and one of only two sites in the municipality classified by the National Trust and on the register of the National Estate. On Sunday, May 6, the society is opening the homestead from 11am-5pm for free to give the community the chance to travel back in time and explore this magnificent home and gardens, and although the tea rooms will not be open, Frankston Rotary will be operating a sausage sizzle. Volunteers will be dressed in period costume and a society member will be stationed in every room of the house and museum to answer any questions you may have.

Ballam Park Homestead and its tea rooms are open every Sunday from 1-5pm, except on the fifth Sunday of the month. You can buy scones, jam and cream for $8 or enjoy a picnic in the park next door. A strong sense of wanderlust and a passion for words led Emily Westmoreland to acquire a position with the Australian Government in Madrid for the past two years. Every work day it was a bilingual environment that Emily thrived in after studying a Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) and a Diploma of Languages (Spanish) at RMIT. However, Wednesdays proved a challenge at first with only Spanish allowed to be spoken in the office. Tantalising tapas, cheap but good wine and free food with every beer ordered also enticed this Frankston woman to make the big move to Spain. “It’s a very sexy language too,” she says. “Language is a culture, and culture is understanding.” This worldly traveller said it was great being home for summer. “But it’s surreal. Sometimes I wonder if I ever went away at all. I’ve noticed the change in Frankston after being away for two years. I’m excited for the new development.” Having worked in a book shop in Frankston, Emily found casual work in a Madrid book store that held a short story competition, and she was given the job of reading 460 2000-word entries. The winner will be announced during Spain’s Day of the Book, when all book shops are open for 24 hours and hold literature events. Can we bring this to Melbourne please? “I’m an avid book reader. And it’s proven that the presence of books in homes significantly improves the literacy before children even start primary school.” The next page in Emily’s story includes flying to London to explore publishing and editing roles as pathways into literacy. Her dream is to come back to Melbourne and open her own book shop that houses a bilingual imprint, printing children’s books in community languages.

Get ready to rumble, folks. And don’t forget your panties in the ‘scrim’. Or your mouthguards, knee, elbow, wrist pads and helmets ‘cause the ‘bout’ could get hairy. There’s safety in numbers. Just ask Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page as they Whip It (2009) or the cast of ‘70s flicks Kansas City Bomber or Unholy Rollers. Roller derby has been on the rush-injecting radar since 1935 as a sport that conjures up images of spunky ‘broads’ who bring it. Johannah ‘Tomb Raider’ Bigas, from Mount Martha, is hooked on the thrill of this caper where women — and yes, that includes mums — seem to find a place where grace, strength, comradeship and adrenalin connect with the crowd and pumping music that spurs them on. Johannah has been ‘jamming’ it for about nine months. She trains twice a week in Carrum Downs with her South Sea Roller Derby pals, bouts every Sunday in her own league and travels once a month farther afield. Her legs are like stone, and when she talks about the game her eyes light up like meteorites.

It was the best thing I did. I was very sore the first few weeks because I kept falling down. I’d never been on skates before, but once you learn how to fall and get back up, it’s exciting. You feel fierce, fit and tough. The rush is awesome.” So here’s the drill. Some girls like to get dressed up. There’s tutus, long socks, short shorts and team colours to be worn when playing away from home. Two teams of five bout for two minutes at a time. There’s jammers, blockers, pivots and a brace. Captains, ‘benchies’ (coaches) and lots of shouting out to each other. Johannah continues. “There’s lots strategy and communication involved and great support from family and friends. Everyone has an on-track name (think Titasaurus, Scooby Doom and Butcher Bird). It’s fun to see how far you can push yourself physically,” says this gentlyspoken eldest of four beachside 20-year-old women. Never judge a book by its cover. And panties? Jeanette Lane fights for seniors’ rights, and that’s not just because she is of a certain age herself; it’s because there are many seniors in our community who need someone to advocate for them. To be on their side and to make things clear. This is personal stuff. Former Peninsula Advisory Committee for Elders chairwoman Jeanette was recently invited to attend the Central Highlands Elder Abuse Prevention Project launch in Ballarat, where she gave a talk about the Mornington Peninsula’s innovative programs and outreach. “This is the first time they will be running an elder abuse program in Ballarat,” she says. The introduction of PACE programs to the central Victorian region marks the much-needed expansion of this vital lifeline. She explains: “Financial abuse is one of the most common forms of abuse our seniors have to deal with. Every time we run a program – and we ran seven of them last year – someone ends up crying and realising they need help. We had one woman whose daughter was going to the bank for her and keeping the money she was withdrawing. PACE refers people to Seniors Rights Victoria and lets people know what they can do in situations like this. Our programs provide information and point you in the right direction as far as where to get legal advice and help.” PACE was established in 2006, and the committee represents Peninsula residents aged over 50. Jeanette has been with PACE for 14 years and its chairwoman several times. To assist older seniors making enduring powers of attorney, Gerard Mansour, the Commissioner for Senior Victorians and Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention, has launched a booklet called Your Voice, Trust Your Choice. Copies are available from the Office of the Public Advocate, Level 1, 204 Lygon St, Carlton — phone 1300 309 337 to be mailed a copy. You can also tune into PACE on AIR on RPP (98.7 FM) sporadically. “We will be conducting programs on power of attorney this year so watch out for the details,” Jeanette concludes. Help is at hand. Colourful life of a coastal steamer After almost 80 years underwater, the wreck of the coastal steamer Kanowna was identified in May 2005 at a depth of 80m. On the night of February 17, 1929, in foggy conditions, the ship had struck a rock to the south of Wilsons Promontory. With her engine room flooded and without power she drifted to the south. Fortunately the sea was calm, and after a radio call for help two other ships picked up all of the passengers and crew without loss of life and took them to Melbourne. The Kanowna sank early the following morning.
Before the advent of air travel, many people chose a comfortable passage on one of the ships which operated between Australia’s capital cities, rather than use the roads or railways. Several companies, including the owners of SS Kanowna, ran regular services around the Australian coast. Older readers will remember the last of these passenger liners which remained in service until the beginning of the 1960s. The Australasian United Steam Navigation Company had the Kanowna built in Scotland in 1902. From her arrival in Australia until World War I the 6993-ton ship operated mainly on the run from Sydney to Fremantle via Melbourne, carrying passengers and 7000 tons of cargo. She was the first coastal liner to offer three classes of accommodation for 125 first-class, 136 second-class and 250 third-class passengers. When the liner arrived in Melbourne on May 15, 1903, The Argus newspaper described her as “a magnificentlyequipped twin-screw vessel, possessing superb accommodation”. It also called her a “leviathan”, but with

a length of 126.5m she was less than half the length of the Golden Princess seen regularly in port today. Requisitioned for war service in 1914 (at first and only briefly as a troopship), she was converted into a hospital ship in England. Her service began in September 1914 and she continued until October 1919, bringing home many wounded Diggers. Returned to her owners in 1920, she was used in various services but was back on her old route when she met her end. Stephen Crouch is a Frankston High School maths teacher who moved to Australia from India when he was a child and now calls Cranbourne home. Stephen chats to Mornington Peninsula Magazine about his passion for teaching, the wacky online world of today’s teens, and why he loves where he works. Why did you want to become a teacher? I’ve loved mathematics since I was a little kid, and as time passed I knew that I wanted to pass this passion on to
the next generation. I really believe that education makes an immense difference, so to be part of that is humbling. Besides, I have heaps of fun teaching and my students are really enthusiastic. What current teen trends baffle you? There are a lot of acronyms and abbreviations that I have trouble understanding. I also notice apps such as Snapchat being used more often than they probably should, which does baffle me. Is there anything about school in India that you would like to see in Australia? The content that is taught in India is at a higher level — for example, there are topics I learnt in Grade 6 in India

that aren’t learnt until Year 9 in Australia. So the maths content in Year 12 in India has a few explorations that we don’t get the chance to carry out here in Australia, and it’d be nice to see an opportunity to carry those out here. What makes working at Frankston High School so great? The learning culture here is amazing; students love learning and the staff love helping them succeed. Parents play a very active role in their child’s education, and the school encourages communication to help further educational outcomes. The principal and staff are also all very friendly and supportive. I love Frankston High School!

BY LIZ ROGERS Is this ‘fur’ real? Lenny the golden retriever from Dromana has more than 7000 followers on Instagram and has been posting pics since the day he came home from the breeder in Hastings. This is one stylish pooch. Paramedic Tara Jackson and her Navy partner Zac Godden are crazy about their gorgeous golden boy and don’t mind the rest of the world knowing it. His Instagram page initially began because Tara knew she’d be snap happy and didn’t want her own social media pages being bombarded. The result has been a bevy of beautiful shots of this now eight-month-old golden retriever who loves to don a Hawthorn scarf, a lifeguard’s cap on the beach or pose with a ball in the hope someone will throw it. And then there’s the reindeer antlers at Christmas. Tara explains: “We got Lenny at eight weeks old. Golden retrievers are a beautiful breed of dog. There’s lots of them living in our street. You do need a good vacuum cleaner, though. Zac vacuums twice a day when he’s home, which suits me fine. I groom Lenny’s feet and clip his nails every couple of weeks and he gets a wash about every six weeks. Brushing happens every few days. He’s been to puppy school and we’re just looking for a local obedience school to further his education.” After all, this canine Instagram celebrity has an image to maintain. Tara continues. “The best thing about the page has been the connection with other golden retriever owners. Finding dog-friendly cafes, the best parks and lots of information.” Sometimes there’s a bit of work involved getting Lenny camera-ready — think liver treats or, for a big reward, a chicken breast. Most of the time, though, he’s freshfaced and ready to roll. Search ‘Lennygoldenboy’ to see what he and his friends get up to at the dog beach at Safety Beach, the leash-free area in Boundary Rd, Dromana, and at Citation Reserve in Mount Martha. After all, a celebrity dog’s gotta do what he’s gotta do!

Food company feeds off solar power
A Carrum Downs-based company is backing up its commitment to allergy-friendly and healthy foods by making a major move towards renewable energy. Orgran Health & Nutrition, which exports its gluten, wheat, egg, dairy, yeast, nut and GMO-free food products to more than 70 countries, began installing 694 solar panels on its Aster Ave head office and factory last December. The panels yield a total of 276,000 kWh per year, powering a substantial portion of the company’s operation, and any excess power is directly transferred back to the grid, allowing the company to share its clean energy with both commercial and residential properties
within the area. Orgran is a division of Roma Food Products, whose chief executive, Owen Nelson, said had made the move towards minimising carbon emissions, reducing overall energy consumption and actively participating in the global fight against climate change. “We are committed to protecting the environment with programs that include recycling and waste reduction, responsible sourcing of raw materials and the installation of rainwater collection tanks,” Mr Nelson said. “Today we have made a significant investment into the use of solar energy at our manufacturing facility, which will assist in reducing our dependence on non-renewable electricity sources over time.”

Guardian angels come to Life-Gate’s aid BY KATE SEARS
As part of its street outreach services, Life-Gate Inc has been busy for the past five months fundraising for a new mobile kitchen, Meals For Change, to provide meals for the homeless and people in need. Unfortunately, Life-Gate was struggling to reach its target. Enter a host of guardian angels. Karingal Hub, the St Kilda Football Club, Bayside Shopping Centre, Creative Artroom and members of the public all dug deep to get Meals For Change up and running. Karingal Hub made up the $8000 shortfall Life-Gate needed to buy the mobile kitchen, which centre manager Catherine Polley said Karingal Hub was proud to support. “The work that Life-Gate does makes a real difference within our local community and Karingal Hub is honoured to be able to support the Meals For Change initiative,” Catherine said. The Saints then invited Life-Gate to be their charity partner for their season launch on Friday, March 9, with all money raised going to Meals For Change to buy food and other necessities. Bayside Shopping Centre and Creative Artroom agreed to become corporate sponsors of Meals For Change; a GoFundMe fundraising campaign raised $3500 for the mobile kitchen, and Dunkley federal Liberal MP Chris Crewther negotiated a $10,000 Federal Government grant for the project. The incredible response delighted Life-Gate co-founder the Rev Angel Roldan. “We’re amazed at how the community has come together to cover this shortfall,” Angel said. “We are deeply grateful to Karingal Hub and the Saints for their generosity and support. They saw the need and were quick to step in and contribute and we’re so thankful.”

Child help service in need of a hand A program dedicated to caring for vulnerable children on the Peninsula is in urgent need of money to continue its vital work. Menzies: Caring for Kids and Peninsula Health have joined forces to deliver pediatric services for vulnerable children in a comprehensive and integrated way where health and education work together. However, Menzies president Kevin Johnson says the program needs money to continue, and he is appealing to philanthropic organisations and governments for help. “Our partnership with Peninsula Health provides school communities in low socioeconomic areas the ability to deliver collaborative assessment of vulnerable children who have poor access to specialist pediatric assessment and management due to financial or parental inability; and significant medical, developmental and behavioural issues impacting on their ability to optimise their educational opportunities,” Kevin said. “By working together locally it provides a ‘one-stop shop’ for these families. Families, educationists, and health come together to assess and
collaborate in a timely way. We partially fund this care at four hubs in Frankston North, Hastings, Rosebud and Mornington. This enables care for more than 20 schools on the Peninsula and more than 1000 children (in 2017).” A pediatric assessment of the children revealed learning issues and behavioural problems including self-harm, possible autism, continence issues, chromosomal abnormalities, sleep issues and dietary deficiencies. Action undertaken included sleep and continence treatment, further assessment for autism, advice and referral for parenting help, and further language and cognitive assessments to help optimise the learning support and structure for the children. “The exchange of professional knowledge has been of great benefit to the teaching staff and has allowed for a much more integrated and holistic service model to be put into place,” Kevin said. “We feel we are on the edge of delivering some powerful and life-changing outcomes for students and parents who desperately need it.” Anyone who is able to help the partnership continue its work is asked to phone Kevin on 0438 093 300 or email him at admin@menzies.org.au

Chisholm gets boost for student support Chisholm’s Frankston campus has received $4.1 million from the State Government for increased student support services and the redevelopment of its Skills and Jobs Centre. Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney and Frankston state Labor MP Paul Edbrooke announced the boost during a recent tour of the campus, where they were given an update on the $75.9 million redevelopment project. They also joined young people taking part in the Young Parents Program, which provides vital support for young parents looking to continue their education. Chisholm chief executive Dr Rick Ede said the money was vital to ensure Chisholm could continue to provide the best possible experience for its students. “Chisholm
provides strong support networks for our students, including careers, welfare, disability and Indigenous support,” Dr Ede said. “This funding will ensure we can continue to help people stay engaged with their education. “Whether students are looking to access training, reskill for new roles or find work placements, our Skills and Jobs Centre plays a really important role and with this funding we can continue to provide this support.” The centre also provides targeted support to preapprentices, apprentices, employers, teachers and parents to help improve apprenticeship retention and completion.

is best practice. The other side of the coin is the focus on the mahout and improving their lot as well through education. In the last couple of years, however, we have now begun to turn our sights on to conservation of elephants in general because the three projects are interdependent. Our hope is that someday all Asian elephants can live in free-range environments that will no longer require human interaction. However, until that time comes, the
H-ELP Foundation is committed to creating the best life for elephants possible, using scientific, evidence-based training techniques and frameworks, and improving the lives of mahouts. Tell us more about elephants in captivity. Is it a better option? It isn’t a better option, it is just that there is nowhere near enough habitat for the 14,000 captives. In fact, there isn’t enough habitat for Asian elephants anywhere in Asia. Even in Myanmar, which had one of the largest populations, the wild elephant populations are decimated in their structure. Males are much rarer than they were and most populations hang around human settlements because they feel safer due to the threat of poaching. The Asian elephant is highly threatened. What has H-ELP achieved of late? As a result of our work in foundationtraining and rehabilitation, The HELP Foundation is now the official training partner of The Wildlife Trust of India, The National Elephant Institute of Thailand and The MTE (the largest private owners of elephants in the world — 3000). The MTE located in Myanmar are attempting to rehabilitate elephants whose former lives were in hauling timber since there were world-wide restrictions on timber harvesting in Myanmar. The alternative is that the elephants will be bought by Chinese buyers and either used in unregulated tourism or ‘melted’ down for traditional medicine. What can a patron learn by coming to the ball on June 16 at the Mornington Racecourse? We are looking forward to showcasing our work through visual platforms and I will present a talk that will educate and provide an insight. We heavily rely on donors and we are very grateful for the local support from individuals and companies across the Mornington Peninsula who are donating and contributing to the event. Big Jase, you’re still a star BY KATE SEARS
Jason ‘Big Jase’ Taylor reflects on a time when he’d be stopped in the street. “You’re that guy from You’re the Star Show!” people would say. Or sometimes, “Aren’t you from Spin?” At the age of 19, the Frankston resident joined the You’re the Star Show. Thirty years ago, this drew 300-plus people every week to the Langwarrin Pub. With MCs motivating and entertaining the crowd, karaoke sessions for punters to provide the laughs, professional singers to wow the audience, as well as party games, DJs, dancing and giveaways, it wasn’t long before it grew to three shows a week. Then eight shows were formed with new hosts and DJs that took to the road full-time, performing up to 40 weekly shows throughout Victoria. After five years of this busy lifestyle, Jason took a year off but missed it so much he put together his own band called Spin, with Pete ‘Stitch’ Pasitchnyj on guitar, ‘Little Jase’ Dean on keyboards and vocals and himself on lead vocals. For 15

years they played every Saturday at the Pelly Bar in Frankston and eventually at every corner pub in the Frankston CBD, The Cove Hotel on Sunday nights, the Somerville Hotel on Thursday nights and regular appearances at Crown Casino. “We worked tirelessly with the marketing and promoting at our venues, making sure we had big crowds,” Jason recalls. “We created a big following and worked hard on our own self-promotion.” A little one and married life saw Jason welcome a 9-5 job as a car salesman. But last March a reunion gig at The Briars, Picnic at Josephine’s, saw Stitch and Big Jase perform as The Pelly Brothers. Their 15-year absence had not lost them any fans, with some 350 people rocking up to see them take the stage again. “My family comes first now with two young daughters keeping me busy, but I do miss performing,” Jason says. “My mind is telling me to get out and play again.” Jason encourages everyone to get out and support local entertainers and keep the music culture alive on the Mornington Peninsula.

When the three sisters are reunited after 10 years apart they again feel the constraints of family life. A semiautobiographical book written by middle sister and expat Meg triggers the familial tensions and dramas that eventuate. How has your career grown since The Voice Australia? At first it was hard to keep up the momentum I had while on the show. I decided to study a Bachelor of Music to sort of find my sound. My biggest struggle has been legitimising myself away from being “that girl who went on TV” and trying to lose the ‘teenage pop princess’ reputation. So much has changed in my life personally over the past five years and I think that’s apparent in the music I’m creating. Paul Sheehan from The Sydney Morning Herald said of you: “One of the finest young singers to emerge from this country in a long time.” How did you respond when you heard this? Total shock. Still can’t get my head around it. I think when you’re in the public eye you develop a slight fear, or should I say wariness, of the tabloids so I was incredibly humbled by the support Paul showed for me throughout that article. You really can’t underestimate the value of kindness.

Your first single will be released soon. How has the process been? It’s been such a private project for so long I’m a little nervous to make it public, but I think I’m ready for that now. I used to worry a lot about what people would think of my original music since I’m probably better known for my covers. But I read recently that an artist’s objective should not be to create the best body of work but to recreate the most honest version of the self. I try to keep that in mind. Anything you’d like to add? It’s so important that we continue to support live music and live music venues. It’s so easy these days to plug in your phone or stream music online, but actually engaging in and supporting your local live music industry is so much more rewarding for everyone involved.

In 1983, a group of patchworkers came together to promote their art and share their skills in a social and creative environment. The Mornington Peninsula Patchworkers has grown significantly since that gathering, its members making quilts for Ronald McDonald House, Frankston Hospital, and palliative care and nursing homes, as well as calico dolls for Peninsula hospitals and trauma teddies for Ambulance Victoria. Tutors, guest speakers and an extensive library supplement the club’s skills-based program, while exhibitions, shopping excursions, mystery bus trips and retreats add variety to its calendar. The club meets on the second Monday of the month at the Studio @ PCT in Wilsons Rd, Mornington, and this year it started a Beginners & Beyond group that meets on the third Saturday of the month at Currawong Community Centre for those unable to take part in weekday activities. BEAUTIFUL ART /PROPER WAY Lance James and Billy Tjampitjinpa Kenda may not be travellers in the given sense of the word. Yet both take us on amazing adventures around Central Australia in works whose vast subject matter belies their small scale. Kenda and James are both disabled artists with restricted mobility but their imagination runs free in these colour-filled paintings. Western Arrernte painter Billy Tjampitjinpa Kenda captures the daily activities of both visitors and traditional owners. Kenda’s Central Australia is no static, empty landscape but one in which tourists clamber up
rocky outcrops and crowd on to buses and cars, noses pressed eagerly to windows as they drink in the views. In contrast to Kenda’s populated views, the paintings of Lance James from the more remote Pitjantjatjara community of Docker River offer a broader take. Having observed the region’s many wild horses and stockmen since childhood, he portrays them traversing the lands rounding up cattle, mustering, droving or simply riding through the wide Outback. This month, the works of Kenda and James along with quirky bird paintings by fellow disabled artist Jane Mervin are on show in the exhibition Beautiful Art/Proper Way at Shoreham’s Whistlewood gallery. The art careers of all three artists are made possible by the social enterprise art studio Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists, which assists disabled Aboriginal artists living in or near Alice Springs to develop a career in fine art that has led to their work being acquired by Australia’s leading state and national galleries. Bindi artists coordinator Sandra Brown is travelling to Whistlewood to open the exhibition on May 19 at 2.30pm; it is current to June 3. James’s colours come together Soul/pop artist James Franklin has been making waves since he released his debut EP, The Laundry Room Mixtape, in 2015 to excellent reviews. James wrote his first song at seven, started his first band at 11 and had his first professional gig at 15. He found his feet almost immediately in Melbourne’s music scene, playing with 5 Seconds Of Summer, Gavin James and Joan Osborne during his formative years. Citing Sam Cooke, Jason Mraz and James Taylor as a few of his significant influences, James learnt early on that to create the music he wanted to make he had to find a way to use all of the colours at once, but still make the painting beautiful. Although challenging at first, when he released his sophomore EP Pumpkin Pie in 2016, James had found his sound — one that combines blues, rock, funk, jazz, and country; a sound that pays tribute to his heroes but stays fresh and current; a sound everyone can connect with. Love leads Marti to Mornington Hair on Barkly welcomes Marti to its team. She is from Hungary and has only been in Australia for just under two years. Her story is rather romantic: she reconnected with her childhood sweetheart through Facebook after they went their separate ways 30 years ago when he came to Australia — and now they’re married. 23/04/2018 2:21 PM
Marti and her business partner ran a very successful hair salon in Budapest. She came to Australia with absolutely no English at all, and leaving her family, business and friends was very daunting indeed. Marti is a very accomplished hairdresser. Her colour work is excellent and her cutting and styling is beautiful as you would expect from a European hairdresser. She says hairdressing is her passion — and it shows. Marti would very much like to connect with Hungarians living on the Peninsula, feeling this would help her English and go towards developing friends locally. She is a happy and bubbly person with a great sense of humour and looks forward to meeting new clients and friends. At the moment Marti is available in salon Thursday and Friday from 9am-4pm. Before you start thinking about using any variety of detox diets, juice cleanses, cabbage soup diets or grapefruit diets, think again. Mornington’s Biggest Morning Tea is back and this year organisers are hoping to raise $2000 for Cancer Council Victoria. The Mornington Chamber of Commerce event will once again be held in Empire Street Mall on May 25 from 9.30-11.30am. Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $1000, with hospitality venues donating platters of food and other businesses donating prizes for raffles. All proceeds will once again be donated to Cancer Council Victoria. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is Cancer Council Australia’s most popular fundraising event and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia. Last year it raised $11.9million and this year it celebrates 25 years. This month we want to shine a light on some of the alternate varieties being grown on the Mornington Peninsula. We all know and love the Peninsula’s pinots and are charmed by its chardonnays, but the region is now establishing itself as one that isn’t afraid to try something a little different.

This wine is characteristically and genetically alike to pinot noir, so it’s no wonder we find it here on the sloping vineyards of Eldridge Estate. This 2016 gamay offers a little more depth while still maintaining the notes of cherry and spice typical of this variety. These fresh red fruit flavours are beautifully balanced with well-integrated tannin, cool acidity and a touch of oak. It might seem like there’s a fair bit going on, but it all presents itself harmoniously in the glass.

Rotating crops will benefit the growth of each subsequent crop while looking after the soil, but if you can afford the space it is a good idea to reinvigorate the beds that have been exhausted the most. We can add our composts, manures or organic fertilisers to the soil in layers or lightly turned

in and reapply mulches, but if you can afford to “rest” a bed or two, growing a green manure or cover crop will not only revitalise the soil, it will also give the entire soil ecosystem time to re-energise. For Melbourne and the Peninsula you can use blends that include the common crops such as mustards, peas, oats, vetch, fenugreek and clovers. Most of the online seed companies will have blends for specific purposes. For example, the mustards and marigolds have bio-fumigation properties that will help clean the soil, suppressing certain pest and disease populations, while the leguminous crops will help add nitrogen to the soil. All crops once turned in will also be adding valuable organic matter to the soil. Other useful additions to your soil that you may want to look into include rock dusts, mycorrhizal powders and liquids, beneficial

Students drawn to The Briars Benton Junior College students took a creative approach when submitting their ideas for the future of The Briars, putting pen and even paintbrush to paper to illustrate what they’d like to see at the historic Mount Martha property. The Grade 4 students’ artistic approach followed Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s call for community feedback and ideas for the development of a master plan for The Briars, which Mayor Bryan Payne said would “articulate how the natural, cultural and heritage values of The Briars and the Mornington Peninsula will be celebrated” for the next 10 to 15 years. “Well done to these students on making the effort to share your ideas,” Cr Payne said. “I encourage all of our local schools to do the same and share their vision for The Briars.” Briars Ward councillor Bev Colomb, pictured with some of the students, said she enjoyed meeting them and that their interest and enthusiasm towards the future of The Briars was greatly appreciated. “Hopefully we can capture some of their ideas in future planning,” Cr Colomb said. A draft master plan is being prepared for the 230ha property and will be presented to the council and community for further consultation later this year.

HERE’S WHY DUCT CLEANING IS IMPORTANT Consumers are often sceptical about duct cleaning. They are often unsure as to what duct cleaning entails and how often it’s needed. “If you are considering cleaning your ducted heating system it is important to realise that the entire system needs to be cleaned, not just the ducts.” In most cases up to 90 per cent of the dust (and therefore dust mites, pollens, germs and fungi) that clog up your system are located in the air return ducting and heater interior, only 10 per cent is in the outlet ducts. The dust and germs stored here breed and multiply continuously, even when the system is not in use. These contaminants lay ready and waiting for you to turn the system on, allowing them to blow around your home for you and your family to breathe in. Full System Cleaning removes this build up and ensures your system delivers clean healthy air into your home. A full system clean system also allows air to flow unrestricted, ensuring your system runs more efficiently.
The Full System Duct Clean Process Step 1: Return Air Duct Cleaned: Removes built up dust and contaminants from the return air duct line. Takes around 45 minutes to complete.
