Image Matters Doug Miller is a long time resident of Mt Eliza who over the years has developed his passion for photography into his business – Doug Miller Images. As the name suggests, the initial concept for the business was the production of prints and cards mainly of the Mornington Peninsula, but gradually expanding to include European images. In addition to the range of prints and cards, Doug now offers a variety of services and can assist with invitations, customised cards, product photography for website production and general photography. His preferred style is real, candid shots rather than formal studio photography, thereby capturing a perfect record of any event. On the local front, Doug has produced a Mt Eliza Village card which is proving to be very popular and is available from local outlets such as Mt Eliza News and Knapps. Yworld believes there’s been a disconnect between online business and bricks-and-mortar local business since the inception of eCommerce itself. More often than not its the local business that pays the price for being disconnected or unavailable in this new media. We’re here to change that, Mt Eliza Illustrated provides every local business with a new-media avenue to communicate with their market and provide up-to-the-minute info about what’s happening. yWorld’s passion is to connect hard working local businesses to online tools that bridge the gap between physical and digital. They’ve been doing this for years but this is the first time something like this has been offered specific to a local area. They listened to local businesses, their frustrations and the ambiguity of online and return on investment for run of the mill promotions and advertising. The result is ‘Mt Eliza Illustrated’, giving business local listings, an active market of interested customers (subscribers), promotional capability and a fresh new look - all from the palm of their customers hand. For the customer they now have the entire local area to consider before heading out and making a shopping decision. Mt Eliza’s Illustrated digital app really is, Mt Eliza, illustrated digitally. ‘Camino with a Difference!’ After a varied and rewarding career of over 30 years working in international development, community and tertiary education, Mt Eliza resident Diane McDonald has escaped desk bound jobs. She is pursuing her passion for meeting people of other cultures and traveling off the beaten track, applying her program management skills to small group travel on Camino trails in Portugal and Spain. Recent years have seen growing interest in travel on ancient pilgrim pathways to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. Most people who journey along ‘The Way’ take the ‘Camino Frances’, a distance of some 800kms starting in the Pyrenees mountains. But for over ten centuries countless thousands have travelled to Santiago along at least twelve major Camino routes! In 2012 Diane led an inaugural group on some of these lesser known pilgrim pathways. Participants were independent minded travellers who sought an authentic cross-cultural experience. Most did not see themselves as intrepid hikers. They wanted flexibility in distances walked, to stay in small, comfortable, family run hotels,

Travel Enriched Director Diane McDonald On the Camino del Norte and to visit historic and scenic places of interest en-route. The itinerary included two of the earliest trails that are at the heart of the Camino story. The group followed the Camino Portugués, which commences in Lisbon, passes through Oporto and the charming rural countryside into Spanish Galicia with its distinctive culture. After reaching Santiago they travelled on the Camino Finisterre to historic fishing villages along the rugged Atlantic coast. Camino paths were well signposted with yellow arrows and conche shell markers. Participants encountered several festivals and talented artisans along ‘The Way’. There was ample opportunity to sample local produce in wayside cafes, markets and vineyards, such as delicious Portuguese custard tarts and other pastries, and a variety of olives, cheese and tapas, washed down with well brewed coffee! A customary late night dinner provided a selection of good quality fish and seafood, hearty meat and vegetable dishes, accompanied by a glass of local vino. In 2013 several similar tours are offered. Itineraries follow forest and farming tracks, via picturesque hamlets and villages, beside winding rivers, streams and vineyards. A typical day begins around 8.30am. Transport between hotels is arranged both for luggage and to transfer those who choose to walk shorter distances. A morning’s walk is generally around three hours, with a short stop mid-way for a rest and a snack. Lunch is often a picnic of local produce or in a wayside café. Those who want to walk on do so meeting up with

Diane McDonald in Lisbon on the Camino Portugues other participants by late afternoon, allowing plenty of free time to relax and explore the new location before dinner. Detailed itineraries can be found on the Travel Enriched website: www.travelenriched.com.au . Diane can be contacted on 0404 417 485 or by email at dm.travelenriched.@me.com . The Camino experience gives one a healthy sense of being part of something bigger... not only a time for enjoyment, but a rare opportunity to escape the mundane or busy lives we lead and to think about the lives of those who have walked the same path over hundreds of years – the path of learning and sharing, enjoying the company of others, personal reflection, seeking insights and getting fitter and stronger!” Participant, 2012. GETTING THE RIGHT BALANCE Injectables are an amazing tool.

around our mouths or even flat cheeks.

The power a little needle can yield to fill in lines and erase wrinkles almost instantly is extraordinary. The simplicity of this fast and relatively pain free treatment is brilliant.

Youth can be restored in seconds. Probably not enough of us take advantage of this amazing tool.

How great it is that we no longer have to live with crow’s feet, lines

Injections for hydration in the skin are brilliant but unfortunately, as with many procedures, there are those who employ a heavy handed approach and we are entering a time when we have noticed some faces start to morph into a swollen and almost deformed look which is waxy and puffy. These people are longer ageless – they have crossed the line from refreshed to ridiculous. Most people who turn to cosmetic injections are looking for a natural look. They want to look the same, only refreshed and healthy. The best way to achieve long term natural results with cosmetic injections is to use combination therapy – an advanced and interested Aesthetician, and an experienced injector. It is important to treat the texture, sun damage, skin laxity and colour of the skin in conjunction with the wrinkles, looking at the face and skin as one. One of the most common signs of ageing is sun damage in the form of discolouration and broken red blood vessels. Cosmetic injections will not treat these concerns, so while injectables will make the skin look smoother, more plump and firm, the remainder of the face could be showing strong give away signs of ageing. The best results are those which refresh you, keep you from looking tired and haggard and solve your problems. Overdoing it can actually make you look older. Some laugh lines and crow’s feet show your human side. Visit Mt. Eliza Beauty Therapy – enjoy a facial with microdermabrasion and discuss your concerns with an Advanced Therapist who can advise you on skin treatments, whilst Dr. Romero, Lara Boardman or Anita East from Anti-Aging & Associates can advise you on your requirements with injectables. Available, Monday, Thursday, Thursday night and Fridays (plus Saturdays monthly). Phone 9787 7475 for an appointment. Sue Verheyan, Mt Eliza Beauty

A new home to celebrate 10 years February 10 marked ten years that Lotus Chiropractic has been part of the Mt Eliza Village. Owner, Kimberlie Furness said the practice evolved from casually adjusting a few friends and family in her parents’ lounge room to a shopfront for nine years, before finally moving into her multidisciplinary purpose built healing centre. Lotus has

grown to five Chiropractors and is constantly evolving with a yoga studio, day spa and other complementary natural health practitioners such as massage therapists, kinesiologists and a lactation consultant, all under the same roof. When they first moved back from the UK in 2000, Kimberlie and her husband Michael

immediately spotted the old kindergarten in Ranelagh drive and imagined building their dream practice. They even drew up plans which included a Chiropractic pavilion, Japanese tea house and relaxation space. They finally bought the old kinder in 2007. A VCAT hearing followed by a surprise pregnancy put the plans on hold for a few years. Building began in December 2011 and took a year to complete. Lotus was ready to move into its new home in November 2012. Though the plans evolved from the original pavilion idea, the façade made of wood, stone and rusty metal definitely makes a statement, though still manages to blend well in the streetscape amongst the paperbarks and eucalypts. The Lotus Philosophy is about Chiropractic care for the whole family, from newborn babies and pregnancy care to children, parents and grandparents. “It has been their privilege to take care of so many families in the local community and the Lotus Team looks forward to many more decades in the village.” said Kimberlie. Join them on Friday February 15th from 6 - 9pm for champagne and canapés to celebrate the official opening and their first

decade in Mt Eliza. Debbie King and her family have been regular patients for over 10 years and officially opened the practice back in 2003. Lotus is thrilled to have Debbie there again accompanied by local politician Bruce Billson to make the opening of the new building official. Lotus welcomes Georgia Quinn Georgia moved to Melbourne from Ballarat 10 years ago to study Myotherapy. She has practiced in a number of position’s including working with professional sports teams in Melbourne. Georgia was first exposed to chiropractic through a good friend while studying. With regular adjustments Georgia experienced the overall impact chiropractic care could have on her health. This inspired her to return to study chiropractic at RMIT. Georgia has a keen interest in helping all members of the family reach their full potential. She has completed additional training in low force techniques (SOT) and neurological development in children. Her favourite part of practicing at Lotus is getting to work with babies and little kids all day!! Lotus has a new day spa Lotus is also very excited to introduce its newest addition to its therapy range, an inspiring day spa - Organique Earth Spa, which will deliver holistic natural beauty treatments for those seeking a more

Pictured: Swamiji and Devi Ma who are the director and co-director of the ashram in Mt Eliza. Mahamandaleshwar Swami Shankarananda Saraswati (Swamiji) is a meditation master in the powerful spiritual tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. This ancient yoga, which Swamiji calls Shiva Yoga, has been transmitted from master to student for thousands of years. He is the Director of the Shiva School of Meditation and Yoga and the author of several books including the best-selling guide to meditation, Happy for No Good Reason. Devi Ma (Swami Bhairavi Ananda Saraswati) is the co-director of the Shiva School of Meditation and Yoga and has been instrumental

in its establishment and growth. Devi Ma was President of Yoga Australia from 2002 to 2007 and helped guide it into the influential organisation it is today. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the national organization ATMA (Australian Teachers of Meditation Association). Teacher Training Courses are being offered at the Shiva School of Meditation and Yoga, here are some testimonials from previous students: Sarah Crundall - What did you like about and get out of the course? The Shiva Hatha Yoga course facilitated an opening and expansion of my being that has brought about an authentic excitement to embark on my journey of teaching yoga. The Shiva Ashram provided a nurturing environment to immerse myself in the teachings, and lovingly accept all parts of myself so that I could acknowledge my own, and others’ brilliance. Through this acceptance I was then able to embrace the teachings and treasures they held, so that one day my service to others would be possible. The Shiva Ashram and Hatha Yoga Teachers are all experienced practitioners, not only in the practicalities of the Yoga Teacher Training, but in the ability to skilfully guide one’s focus towards the Self, and help one to recognise that anything is possible with this awareness. What was the highlight for you? There were many highlights and they came in the form of firstly Swami Durgananda, an empowered woman who fully embodies her brilliance, and my fellow students, who made the journey a pure

joy… for a joy shared is a joy doubled! Gajendra - What did you like about and get out of the course? The course allowed me to find and explore an approach to Yoga that suited me. It gave me the confidence to develop my own personal practice that I could integrate into my lifestyle. I was also able to find the context for Hatha Yoga within Shiva Yoga. I had many rich experiences during the workshops and classes ran by members of Shiva Yoga community. I feel ready to teach others yoga and also continue to deepen my studies independently. Great thanks to Swami Durgananda, Sachi and of course Guruji and Devi Ma. Felicity - What did you like about and get out of the course? The structure of the course is really good. The 18 month length is a great way to slowly absorb everything you learn and give you a chance to implement new things slowly. All the teachers were knowledgeable and friendly. Great team! I have been able to learn more about something that I LOVE. Thank you! Kate - What did you like about and get out of the course? To all my teachers, I would like to say thank-you from the bottom of my heart. I have loved the course and would happily do it again next year. I enjoyed the variation of teachers with all their broad knowledge. This course has always been interesting, never dull. What was the highlight for you? The highlight is that yoga has changed me in ways I cannot try to explain. I will just keep at it. Shiva School of Meditation & Yoga, 27 Tower Road, Mt. Council Matters with Andrew Dixon

AN INTRODUCTION G’Day! I’m Andrew Dixon, the new councillor in Briars Ward for the Mornington Peninsula Shire. Elections were held in October

last year, and I’m one of three new people privileged enough to represent you in local government. It’s only been a few months, but it’s flown by and there’s a whole lot already underway. Planning scheme changes for Mount Eliza’s Woodlands, a new community noticeboard and neighbourhood fire safety discussions are just a taste of what’s going on at Council. Australia Day was fantastic, with legendary footy player and lecturer David Parkin coming down to share a breakfast paid for by Mt Eliza Community

Bank, and cooked by Mt Eliza Rotary Club. Parkin is an inspiring speaker when it comes to issues facing our youth, so I encourage you all to check him out. The local CFA also made an appearance on the day – a great effort considering members of their team were fighting fires near Heyfield, in Gippsland. It’s been a pretty busy season for emergency services, with power surges, a blazing-hot Summer and of course, the new year period. Keep them in your thoughts when you’re out enjoying what our community is able to safely offer.

Personally, I’ve got a whole lot still to learn – in fact, I imagine the learning never stops in a gig like this. This year alone we’ve got an $8.2m redevelopment of the David Collings Leisure Centre coming up, a review of the contract of the Shire’s CEO and of local laws governing burning off. I’ll be meeting with many local residents and groups over the coming months, as well as finishing my studies, so if you have anything to add along the way, don’t hesitate! Let artwork brighten your home After more than 44 years as Mount Eliza’s home of contemporary art, Manyung Gallery’s walls are well known for constantly changing inspiration from a stable of over 150 artists. Manyung Gallery Group’s art consultants are friendly and easy to work with and have unparalleled expertise in introducing beautiful paintings to your home, one wall at a time, in an enjoyable way. Manyung’s art consultants can visit your home, digitally record the areas requiring attention, measure critical spaces, review artificial and natural lighting affecting hanging or display areas, and assess the current layout as well as tonality of the target environment. They can then superimpose images of paintings you like on pictures taken of your walls and email a ‘new look’ back to you. The next step is to organise a trial delivery so you can view the pieces you really like in your home, assist with the final choice, placement, installation and, most importantly, ensure you are totally happy with the ‘fit’ of your artworks. If you have recently come to the realisation that your home needs artwork on empty, plain walls, or refreshment and updating with contemporary art, here’s some initial advice from Manyung’s experience art consultants.

Assess your spaces Have a wander around your home with a ‘critical’ eye, as if you are visiting for the first time. What wall spaces jump out at you as being especially plain and needing artwork? Which areas are first seen by you and

20

visitors when you enter a room, particularly at the front entrance and the family areas where everyone usually clusters to socialise? Often a couple’s private areas, particularly the Master Bedroom, also are singled out as needing a special painting or sculpture.

Prioritising your needs After determining those areas that you would like artwork in, prioritise the ones to address first. At this stage you may also wish to consider reframing some of your existing artworks in a more contemporary way. If you are now wishing to look for new artworks for one or two ‘high priority walls’, start some basic research.

Research art galleries, services Visit or look at the websites of local galleries. It is hard to believe but there are over twenty art galleries and studios on the Mornington

Hips, Harmony & Hitler A Special Anzac week benefit concert for Mornington Peninsula Legacy 22

Issue 29 • February, March, April 2013

Marion Martin’s successful musical production, Hips, Harmony and Hitler, will be playing at the Frankston Arts Centre on Tuesday 23rd April at 2pm as a Benefit Concert for Mornington Peninsula Legacy. Executive Producer Peter Hartin said, “Legacy is a most worthwhile organisation and the continuous good work they do deserves every support; we are delighted to be able to help Mornington Peninsula Legacy”. Created by legendary Scottish recording star Marion Martin, Hips, Harmony and Hitler is a stirring spectacle driven by unforgettable songs, glamour, colourful costuming and the unique talents and distinctive personalities of ‘Our Gracie’ (Gracie Fields), ‘Marlene’ (Marlene Dietrich) and the ‘Brazilian Bombshell’ (Carmen Miranda), all brought to life onstage by Marion Martin in a stellar performance that sweeps you away to a time and place remembered by millions. “This period piece takes the audience back to a Theatre in wartime London during the Blitz . Through archival WW2 footage and magnificent stirring songs, they experience the exciting atmosphere and sense of all being in it together as they find themselves and everyone around them singing along with Gracie Fields, having a laugh and perhaps shedding a

tear. It’s an experience of how people pulled through those dark days by coming together and singing songs, songs that brought them to the light of victory at the end of a long black tunnel.” This performance pays homage to the people of the time while simultaneously reminding us of the vital role these three female entertainers played in the serious business of uplifting public morale during the darkest days World War II. Martin said, “They were three remarkable women who lifted everybody’s spirits and took their minds away from the war and it gives me great pleasure to portray them”. The show has been hailed an overwhelming success by audiences for its touching and engaging music and Martin’s irresistible and sophisticated performance. Welcome to 2013

At Dental Care Mt Eliza we follow up our Patient Recalls regularly, so if you have received one – you are due for a dental appointment. Recalls are also sent to those who haven’t been seen for at least 18 months. It is important to be reviewed regularly to be assessed for Dental Disease. You may not realise that apart from looking for Decay and checking your Gum Health, we also screen for risk of Sleep Disordered Breathing and Issues of Headaches, Facial Pain, Jaw Pain and Neck Pain The issue of Cranio-Facial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine are very pertinent to Dentistry as both problems have their roots in facial development. Why is it so Important? Because Sleep Apnoea – Untreated, Kills you earlier and Pain in the Head and Neck destroys your Quality of Life! For the Children, we are assessing their Growth and Development – not just their teeth. We believe that with the correct development of the face to grow straight teeth and with a properly functioning head then our children are in a better place to avoid many future pitfalls. Mount Eliza Farmers’ Market The Mt Eliza Farmers’ Market is back for another year, bursting with produce and atmosphere and bringing the Mt Eliza Community the best of what Victorian and Peninsula based producers have to offer. The market has become a highly regarded monthly event in the region and has contributed over $40,000 back into the community since opening in 2010. Projects that the Mt Eliza Lions have contributed to recently with funding generated from the market include: The ‘Sailability’ Program for the disabled at Mornington Yacht Club, the Mornington Christmas Hamper distribution to needy

families and funding towards audio visual equipment at a Palliative Care Unit. Similarly, the Mt Eliza Rotary Club have made possible: a new defibrillator for the Mt Eliza Bowling Club, $1,000 towards the Mt Eliza CFA’s new thermal imaging machine, $3,500 towards the Chamber of Commerce’s Village Green project and also the newly launched 3 Fitness Stations in Howard Parker Reserve. These are just a few projects that the Lions and Rotary Clubs have been working on with their funding from the market. The market is now approaching its 3rd birthday, a wonderful community initiative that the Chamber of Commerce is extremely proud of.

Judy Barrett, owner of Morning Star Estate has taken back the management of the entire property including restaurant and accommodation facilities. And by all accounts is relishing in her new role. Actually I wonder if Judy every really left, as she always seems to be there tenfding to her roses or showing people around the gardens. Table Matters have now moved on, so Judy has decided to once again take on the full responsibility of running the estate. We are told to look forward to a new improved Morning Star Estate. Her passion for the garden saw the estate’s gardens restored to their former glory over the past 2 decades. Many buildings have

also been restored. Vines look healthy and occasional festivals have been very successful. There are plans for a produce driven festival around Easter and many other plans are afoot. More details will appear in Mornington Life Magazine out March 14th. Judy, a well known and loved member of the Mt Eliza community, is also a member of Mt Eliza Rotary. Watch this space for more on the bi-annual Rotary Garden Show planned for later this year. The Estate has been closed over the past few weeks for renovations, we hear you can expect new menus and new concepts at our own ‘winery down the road’. There is unlimited potential at this unique and magnificent site, which is steeped in history. On a clear day look through the rose garden to the bay and see its truly magical. Call in to see Judy soon. Morning Star Estate, 1 Sunnyside Road Mt Eliza. Phone 9787 7760 - Lisa Walton

Three Ducks David Morley has certainly been making a name for himself since he left Mount Eliza. His experience and passion for food and hospitality started with renowned caterers Peter Rowland. Then David became the darling of Melbourne dining with his cutting edge style at The Southern Cross and The Clarendon Hotels in South Melbourne, then off to Half Moon in Brighton. David and wife Tobey, although now relocated to Mt Eliza, still operate their most recent venture Six Keys in Beaumaris. Six Keys has received rave reviews in the past three or so years as a warm and family-oriented restaurant.

Issue 29 • February, March, April 2013

Just prior to Christmas Six Keys was awarded 4 stars in The Age. The article also broke the news of their new venture Three Ducks in Mt Eliza. So what can we now expect to see at Mt Eliza’s fabulous corner restaurant (formerly Verde). “I would like to think that we have taken the family restaurant to a whole new level,” explained David. “We are open for lunch from noon and then dinner from 5pm and as you can see we have plenty of space, stunning large tables where families can spread out and dine early,” David continued. David was born and grew up in Mt Eliza, now with his own three little ducks Jude, Leo and Poppy, he is well aware of how families love to dine out together. But equally aware that there needs to be plenty of space for other patrons to also enjoy their dining experience. Tobey, David’s wife, has styled the new restaurant, it has been opened up and transformed with an eclectic modern, vintage feel. Limewashed vintage bentwood chairs and long tables of mango oak grace the much larger room, with stunning Moroccan tiles a feature of the new open bar. You immediately notice how light and relaxed it feels with internal walls gone and colours changed. Get down to Three Ducks, a fabulous menu awaits offering succulent and delicious dishes across a broad spectrum with many French/ Italian influences. There are also at least 5 chalkboard specials changing regularly. On offer are small plates, large plates, light lunches and traditional Italian flatbreads (pizzas) plus some fabulous items for the kids. Did I mention that they give out kids showbags? The majority of mains are under $30 and their wine list, with over 70% Mornington Peninsula wines is also very reasonably priced. “We want the consumer to enjoy a variety of different wine choices so expect over 60 wines from around $18 to $100 to be part of our menu very soon. Many, possibly 60%, will be local.” said David. Three Ducks also sources much of its produce locally, and why wouldn’t they with some much fabulous produce grown and produced locally. Currently Three Ducks will open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner but expect it to be 7 day trading in the very near future. David and Tobey have not finished yet and you can expect more changes both inside and out as next Summer approaches. I can’t wait! - Lisa Walton Join us on Facebook ‘ The Village Mt Eliza Magazine”
