A Gouzlan great - 75 years’ young Farid Madkour taught his wife Cheryl (Young) much about life, love and jewellery. This Egyptian born son of a single mother who was an actress before she had acid thrown on her face, came to Australia in 1980 and never looked back. He was happy and enjoyed chatting with everyone who came to his gorgeous Gouzlan Egyptian Jewellery store in Mount Eliza Way. “Farid started learning his craft on the job in Egypt before coming to Australia,” says Cheryl, who has taken over from where he left off. “He loved working with precious gem stones and 18 carat gold. He cut the stones himself and was a member of the lapidary (cutting and polishing of stones) club in Frankston. He’d only been a member for six months before he passed, but he enjoyed it so much.”

by Liz Rogers

Determined to keep Farid’s memory alive, Cheryl is continuing to stock exquisite Egyptian and Italian jewellery made by an onsite jeweller and imported from overseas. “We would go back to Egypt once a year to see Farid’s family and friends and then on to Europe to buy. I still have many of the pieces he bought in store, plus a new range of silver and gold jewellery especially designed for the younger market.” Step inside Gouzlan Egyptian Jewellery today to view the exquisite legacy left by this master jeweller who lives on through his craft - and through Cheryl. Welcome to the April edition of the Mount Eliza Magazine. Much has happened since the October 2016 edition of our lovely local mag, and Easter and Mother’s Day are just around the corner so let’s talk Village news. Many new businesses have been welcomed into the Village over the last six months. Mimi’s Chocolates in Davies Avenue, Tree House Republic Kids in the Ritchies Centre plus new restaurant AD HOC on Mount Eliza Way have opened their doors to locals with a smile. An extended Bisque Salon

4

has relocated in the Safeway carpark on Canadian Bay Road, while fashion based store Golightly has taken over Bisque’s original premises on Mount Eliza Way. Salt Yoga and Base Podiatry are both open for business facing the car park at the rear of Ranelagh Drive, and the upper floor at 84 Mount Eliza Way is the new home for relocated professional services ACE Body Corp and Carlson Accounting. Homewares store The Colour English has also opened in Mount Eliza Way. The Woolworth’s upgrade at Eliza Square began early March with the façade

undergoing a major transformation. (Complete internal and external upgrade will take approximately 18 months.) The building extension will result in the addition of two extra shops inside the mall and the carpark will be extended to include current unused land at corner of Davies and Clarkston Avenues to ensure no loss of parking overall. The supermarket will be approximately one third larger too. With the school holidays upon us, remember to shop local for all your Easter treats and stay local for loads of Easter fun. There will be an Easter Egg hunt on Sunday April 9 in Rotary Park run by the Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Harcourt’s Real Estate, while a ‘Find the Easter Bunny Window Stickers’ hunt will get locals searching. (There are 20 bunny stickers to be found on windows around the Village.) Easter Bunny himself hops by on Saturday 15 from 9.30am until 12. With Mother’s Day, not far behind the Easter celebrations (Sunday May 14), keep in mind that all your gifts and venues for celebratory brunches and lunches are right here in the Village. Spoil your special mum with fashion, accessories, beauty products and therapies, or a wonderful dining experience to show you just how much you care. Mount Eliza Village really does offer something for every-one, so come and celebrate in it this Easter and Mother’s Day. And remember - the Mount Eliza Village Market continues to provide deliciously fresh produce on the fourth Sunday of every month.

Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza has its eye on the elements this May with an exceptionally evocative landscape show by oil painter Sharyn McCombe. McCombe’s art explores the way in which our environment swirls and crashes around us. Layers and scrapes, scratches and wipes work from within her canvas’ to celebrate what lies beneath. Seduction of the senses plays a big part in her art. You want to jump in and play hide and seek. She explains: “The mist and sea fog fascinate me. I started taking my horse down to Balnarring Beach for exercise and was overwhelmed by the weather patterns around me. The fog falling over Red Hill. I’m always taking snaps of the weather!” McCombe has been an art teacher (Bachelor of Arts and Crafts), won multiple prizes for oil and pastel work, and is on her way to completing a fine art diploma at Chisholm. “I think I’d be a perpetual student if I could. I love learning as much as I can about the medium. Ph: 9708 8222 Shop Taste Indulge

There’s always something new” and technique is what makes these deceptively free-form works of art wander through your soul. Yes, you can see traces of a Turner or Tasmanian artists Philip Wolfhagen or Geoff Dyer (her inspirations) in that they all speak of the hidden, but McCombe’s work unequivocally reveals her love affair with the Peninsula and the inventiveness it inspires. Explore McCombe’s world of free falling splendour in all its multiglazed super textural form from Friday May 12 onwards at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza where land, sea and artistic expression unite. Footy’s just fine for Mornington Peninsula gals! Identical 21-year-old twins Sarah and Jess Hosking started playing footy in 2015 after trying every other sport under the Mornington Peninsula sun. (Think athletics, soccer, basketball and diving.) This talented twosome was picked by Carlton to play in the 2017 women’s inaugural football league and they are ‘stoked’. Director of sport at Toorak College Kirsten Thomson gives us an insight into the girl’s sporting life at Toorak College and it is clear they never had any intentions of being second best. Kirsten explains, “Sarah and Jess were actively involved in a range of sports throughout their school years. Their unique ability to locate each other on court was an asset to both Mt Martha Primary and Toorak College sports teams. They played high-level netball as team members

for the Peninsula Waves VNL teams, and at Toorak College, they competed in a range of interschool sports teams ranging from Diving to Basketball and Soccer. Their love of playing anything and everything resulted in the girls challenging themselves to aim to compete in at least one game of every sport available to them throughout their Year 12 year.” Now that’s dedication. The first ever women’s footy match was played between Carlton and Collingwood on February 3 and saw a capacity crowd of 24,500 squeezing into Princess Park. The game marked the beginning of a 28-match competition played at suburban centres in seven states and territories over seven weeks. The Adelaide Crows took the flag, but it’s more about the passion for these two Peninsula gals. “Sarah and Jess readily share their passion Ph: 9708 8222

for the sport on both the AFLW big stage as well as coaching young people through community programs. They are wonderful role models in a very exciting time for the sport,” continues Kirsten. “The level of interest we are experiencing in AFL football both in the local clubs as well as in the interschool program is very exciting to see.” Toorak College students have had a long association with interschool AFL football with memorable Woodleigh-Toorak games through the late 1980s. Sarah and Jess were instrumental in Toorak College teams and entered the world of AFL football when the Girls Sport Victoria program included interschool football as part of its weekly sport program. Jess currently holds the Toorak College school records in both Shotput and Javelin. Congratulations Hosking twins and Toorak College for encouraging them to shine. Shop Taste Indulge

New Services at VSRC Victoria Sports & Rehabilitation Clinic, located on the Nepean Hwy have recently finished renovating their premises to expand their services to support the local community for all of their musculoskeletal health needs. Already offering Osteopathy, Exercise Rehabilitation and conservative treatment of Scoliosis, they now also offer Remedial Massage and Clinical Pilates. Osteopathic manual treatment can be effective to manage acute and chronic conditions such as neck and back pain, sporting injuries and pregnancy related pain. Clinical Pilates and Remedial Massage are both a complementary extension of osteopathic treatment, which may assist in the long-term management of musculoskeletal injures and pain. Clinical Pilates continues injury prevention education and rehabilitation through training the body in strength,

function and mobility. It particularly focuses on core control, spinal mobility and support as well as alignment and control of the limbs during movement, all of which play a role in prevention of injury and improving posture. The Clinical Pilates Programs are individually designed based on an initial screening and identified goals. Classes are small, cost effective and run by practitioners who have trained across multiple Pilates training methods. A combination of equipment is used within a class including reformers, the trapeze tower, wunda chair and mats and due to this wide range of equipment it can be individually tailored from beginner to advanced to cater for all needs. International Baccalaureate and Steiner Stream at Secondary College Mount Eliza Secondary College leads the way in providing high quality education, whilst being open to meeting the needs of its local community. For this reason, the school has recently sought and received approval as a Candidate School for the Middle Years Program of the International Baccalaureate. Principal Angela Pollard explains. “We are very excited to be undertaking this approach to teaching and learning which is based on a commitment to rigorous, challenging, international education.” Angela noted that she was confident that going down this path would further refine the quality processes and research based practices that have been used so successfully in the past four years, as well as meeting local demand for the MYP. A further inclusion at the college is the introduction of a Steiner Stream at year 7. The Steiner approach is focused on an academic and artistic curriculum approach, which supports young people to build the capacity for courage, confidence and resilience to go out into the world with a strong sense of self and ethical values. Give flu the flick with Chemmart Winter is almost upon us so now’s the time to start thinking about the dreaded flu and how to guard yourself and others against contracting this insidious virus! Chris Bradley’s Chemmart Mount Eliza can help. The team at Chris Bradley’s Chemmart Mount Eliza is always looking for new avenues to improve the health and well-being of the community, so when the opportunity to train their pharmacists to give immunisations came about, they jumped at the chance! Vaccination is a vital prevention tool against contagious disease and protects not only the individual, but those they interact with. Flu can cause serious complications in the elderly and the very young so by vaccinating yourself, you can protect your extended family and members of the community. You also prevent yourself from acquiring it or significantly reduce symptoms and the risk of virus transmission. (Remember: An individual with influenza may be contagious Ph: 9708 8222

for 24 hours before their symptoms begin and continue to be infectious for a week afterwards which can be devastating in the work place or at home.) Early April saw Chris Bradley’s Chemmart Mount Eliza hold an exclusive four strain Flu Clinic, but if you missed it, you will be guaranteed a vaccination on time of booking for just $14.95. There will also be a walk-in service for on the spot vaccinations soon. Protecting yourself and your family from the flu (and whooping cough) just got a lot easier. Visit Chris Bradley’s Chemmart Mount Eliza today to see how you can stay well this winter. SHAW lenses may assist your sight SHAW lenses are newly designed lenses which can greatly improve vision for people who have struggled with wearing multifocals in the past. Adjusting to the graduating powers in a multifocal lens can take time, but the SHAW lens, (in most circumstances), negates this because they are made with specific measurements to encourage the eyes to work together, irrespective of their different powers. For example, a prescription such as; Right Eye -0.50 and Left Eye +2.00, would benefit greatly from a SHAW lens as the difference in each eye is quite substantial. This can cause distortion due to each eye creating two different image sizes (because of the power) which means the brain cannot fuse the images together. (Measurements taken are calculated specifically to make both eyes work at an optimal level together). Winning smiles for all ages Many adults wonder what can be done to improve their smile – but braces are often overlooked as being visually unappealing or only for children.

If you are interested in finding out what options are available for you, contact Hanks Orthodontics to arrange a consultation.

However, braces aren’t just for kids anymore and the ones used today are a lot different from those you might remember when you were a kid. In fact, many are hard to notice right off when other people are looking at you. Ceramic braces are white and are much less obvious than traditional metal braces, lingual braces are attached to the inside surface of your teeth, and custom-made clear plastic aligners fit like mouthguards over your teeth and gently move your bite into a new position.

Endermologie on Humphries Peninsula Endermologie owner Niamh Hislop knows Lipomassage protocols work. In her training as a general nurse and working at The Harley Medical Group (UK’s leading cosmetic clinic) she witnessed the benefits Endermologie offered her clients. Having identified the need for an affordable solution to cellulite and body contouring locally, (and knowing that treatment results vary according to therapist), Niamh began Peninsula Endermologie with a resultsdriven focus. She explains. “I’ve used this technique on myself and many more clients so I know it works. Lipomassage gradually reduces the appearance of cellulite and unwanted fat deposits. This technique has been used throughout Europe for years and has

Making a difference with Rotary Australian Rotary Clubs are part of an international network of business, professional and community leaders who endeavour to make the world a better place. Rotary International unites people from different backgrounds allowing them to achieve extraordinary things together. Leanne from Barry Plant Mornington is a proud member of the Mount Eliza Rotary Club and is often asked what exactly does Rotary do locally. “Rotary does so many amazing things for our community,” explains Leanne. “We built the $38,000 Rotunda in Rotary Park in Mount Eliza Village, have provided $15,000 for five high tech beds for children at Frankston Hospital and purchased two horses for Riding for the Disabled. Rotary also assisted the setting up of the Mount Eliza Men’s Shed, facilitated Mount Eliza Secondary

student’s attendance at the National Youth Service Forum, and provided funds to Rotary International’s Polio Plus program.” If that’s not enough the Mount Eliza Rotary Club also provides funding for medical and educational programs in Timor, Cambodia and Fiji and supports many other projects through fundraising activities and donations. Sweet end to food search

Drop into Pops, where the locals go As the saying goes, follow the locals if you are looking for good food and coffee. That’s certainly the case at Pop & Selma’s Café in Mt Eliza. On a beautiful autumn day this is where the locals and, quite often, their pets linger over good food in the heart of the Mount Eliza Village. There are essentially three seating options – watch the world go by dining alfresco on the sidewalk out the front; head indoors; or spread out in the private rear courtyard, which is perfect for parents with prams and larger groups seeking a bit more space. Pop & Selma’s Café is open from 6.30am Monday to Friday, with tradies’ specials; they serve an all day breakfast menu; and it is licensed. On Sundays this is the place to head in Mount Eliza for live music and good times. It’s vegan and vegetarian friendly, has plenty of gluten free options, a fabulous selection of healthy smoothies and fresh chai. One of the local favourites is the ‘Pops Big Breakfast’ – free range eggs of your choice with bacon, seasoned mushrooms, grilled roma tomatoes and wilted spinach, served on ciabatta (there’s a vegetarian version too). There’s eggs Florentine, eggs Benedict, Mexican, Turkish and much more. It’s all here, just ask the locals. POP & SELMA’S CAFÉ A: 34 Ranelagh Drive, Mt Eliza T: 8743 1120 MtElizaVillageMag

Here you’ll find a wonderful range of food products, including baking and cooking ingredients, snacks, cereals, confectionery, pastas, sauces, soups and spices. Not only are they all suitable for fructose-intolerant people, everything is gluten free and suitable for those with coeliac disease and gluten intolerance. Issue 39 • Autumn/Winter 2017

I was introduced to Woodleigh School when my brother started Year 7 way back in 2005. I still remember, at the age of seven, looking forward to the day when I entered a school where the possibilities seemed endless. While my brother and I may have had different experiences, they were equally amazing. This I attribute to one of Woodleigh’s core principles: equality. Woodleigh values equality not just between genders but across all boards. This is a school where there are many and varied pathways to success, with the freedom for students to forge their own. I thrived at Woodleigh and I know that many of my female friends felt the same way. The co-ed environment produces driven, confident, and intelligent young women who know how to respond to the challenges of a co-ed world. Woodleigh’s sense of community creates a support structure that encourages high achievement, personal bests and hard work, regardless of gender or interest. The Woodleigh School environment is one where all young people are encouraged to be strong, resilient and innovative – boys and girls alike. Ph: 9708 8222
