Sailing, sea and sport, sport, sport! Looks like sailing and salt water is in the blood. Well it is for 21-year-old Mel Hitchen-Haw, who was on a yacht by the age of three weeks old and has never really got off. Hitchen-Haw comes from a family of sailors. She grew up in Hampton with a world champion competitive racing father (think the Melbourne to Hobart) and sailing race officer mother. I mean really, what chance did she have? “I’ve been competing since I was about 10 years old and came second at the World Championships in the Laser 4.7 Class under 16s Youth girls a few years back. I also won the winter youth nationals in Queensland in 2010 but turned my hand to coaching shortly after, working at the Mornington Yacht Club since last year. I love it! I coach a group of sailors up to 14 years old, some of whom are in the State Junior Optimist (Optimist Dinghy) team. I’ve just had to tell them to stay out of the water today because they need a break! They’ve been training up to three hours

a day for the last nine days!” Hitchen-Haw hasn’t stopped sailing herself though. She’s working towards the 420 World Championships in Fremantle in December 2017, but she’s got to get through the National Championships at the end of the year first. She’s trying her sea-faring hands at the 470 double handed monohull planing dinghy with a centreboard (which is World Sailing International Class and had been an Olympic Class since the 1976 games) over the year. She explains. “I am working towards the Olympics, but we’ll have to see how I go… see if I can handle a bigger boat. I’ve almost completed my Secondary PE Teaching degree so it will be good to have that under my belt. And I love playing footy” – she plays with the Seaford Football and Netball Club in the reserves. Now living in Balnarring with her tennis playing auntie and uncle, this sailing and all sports fanatic is looking forward to her sports-fuelled future. “Whether I make it to the Olympics, keep coaching or teach full time, I’ll always be involved with sport. I just
love the whole mental side of it - The strategy and physical strength. I’m hooked”, she says - line and sinker! BY LIZ ROGERS

Olympian launches ‘WOW Active’ Two-time Olympian and three-time World Champion Sarah Blanck has joined forces with the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club to create ‘WOW Active’. The program was officially launched at the opening of the SSCBC season on November 5. It has been developed by Sarah and the SSCBC and will be activated during the 20162017 sailing season. With her vast experience in sailing, Sarah is set to provide the club with an innovative and exciting new program for Women on Water (WOW). The events will include yoga, group fitness training and paddle boarding – all to be held at the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club (January 2, 5 & 8). Brodie Harper - Channel 9 Postcards presenter and ambassador of Mercedes Benz, Brighton and Mornington - will be the Master of Ceremonies for the events. Luxury brands involved include Endota Spa (Yarraville and Williamstown). Participants will be able to enjoy a delicious breakfast after their fitness/yoga session, indulge in some shopping with pop-up stores, and receive a gift bag from Endota Spa and other key brands, while listening to DJ Rutherford Entertainment. In conjunction with the WOW Active program, the Sarah Blanck all-female regatta will also be held in March, 2017. This event will coordinated by Sarah and a number of leading Olympic sailing coaches. For those of you who remember ‘80s pop funk/ new wave band Kids in the Kitchen or Uncanny X Men, Boom Crash Opera, Wa Wa Nee or The Chantoozies like I do, life is about to rewind to a time when bands played multiple live gigs a week and were regarded as flesh and bone rock gods. I’m chatting with St Andrew’s Beach local Scott Carne lead vocals of Kids in the Kitchen. The band got together in 1983, hit the ground running with songs like Change in Mood, Bitter Desire, Something That You Said and Current Stand (Mushroom Records) and toured with The Models. The ABC’s Aussie Rock phenomenon Countdown was next on the list. “Times were good for bands in the ‘80s”, says Scott. “You had to work hard but at least you could get out there and play. It’s hard to get live gigs if you’re a young band today. Everything is done digitally.”

BY LIZ ROGERS But it’s not hard for him or the musicians he grew up with performing in front of screaming devotees who are still screaming today. “Kids in the Kitchen reformed at the beginning of 2016. We’ve done a few shows this year including the Australian Culture Club Tour, playing to anywhere in between 3000 to 9000 people. There’s going to be an encore performance in Sydney next year. I’m looking forward to that. The audience really gets into it.” He’s also been playing around the traps in the Absolutely 80’s Party Band for the last 10 years which he promotes through his Popular Entertainment Company POPSHOP. “We play all the original ‘80s Aussie songs. The rotating list of artists includes Brian Mannix, Dale Ryder, Eve Von Bibra and Ally Fowler, David Sterry, Paul Gray and Fred Lonergren. Each line up is different but the songs don’t change. There’s none of that unplugged stuff. You hear them like they were meant to be sung.” The Absolutely 80’s Party band is playing at The Royal Hotel in Meredith on December 17, Club Malwala in NSW December 30 and
New Year’s Eve goes off at the Shoppingtown Hotel in Doncaster. They are also coming down to the Rye RSL on March 24, 2017. “I love the Mornington Peninsula. My wife and I moved here around 14 years ago when the prices were still doable! St Andrews is a beautiful spot. My two boys love surfing, the beach. There’s nowhere I’d rather be.” Except maybe on stage? “I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t enjoy it. Nerf enthusiasts on the Peninsula have been invited to take up arms against the zombie hordes. McCrae musician Eddie J Fury and his 12-year-old son, Wolfie, have launched a Facebook page to gauge interest in organising HVZ - human versus zombie - tag battles after Wolfie recently took part in one in Melbourne. “Lots of people had a lot of fun in the city but there were no organised Nerf wars down on the Mornington Peninsula, so I decided to make one so then people will have something to do,” Wolfie says. “I’m a lot of the time on my iPad, and it’s just good to get some exercise. And it’s fun, so then I have a reason to modify my Nerf blasters.” HVZ “is pretty much gang-up tiggy with Nerf blasters”, Wolfie says. “Four people start off as zombies. If you’re a zombie you have to get all humans by tagging them with your hands or a pool noodle. A match is 20 minutes long but we’ll end any time when all humans have been tagged. Zombies gain power-ups during the match; for example, five minutes in, zombies get a pool noodle to extend their reach; 10 minutes in they get a riot shield to block darts; 15 minutes in they get a grenade (a soft foam ball) so the zombies have a projectile, and if you get hit, you’re a zombie.” If the interest is there, the first match could be staged during the summer holidays. It’s likely to be at a park, with a barbecue to follow. There’s pretty much no age restriction because there will be adult supervision, but Wolfie does warn that the foam darts do hurt a bit when they hit. Safety glasses must also be worn when playing. Since his son got interested in Nerf wars, Eddie says he’s discovered a whole Nerf subculture; while you can pick up a blaster for $20-$30, some enthusiasts spend hundreds on modifications and the tools needed to do so. Wolfie got his first Nerf blaster when he was six or seven; he estimates he now has about 10. For a 20-minute match he’ll carry two – a sidearm and a primary. But the main requirement, he says, is good footwear. “It doesn’t matter about the Nerf blasters; it’s the shoes, because you’ll always be running a lot.” Anyone who’s interested can check out facebook.com/ groups/346850278988760/

Helping hands for the homeless When Deniz Marchmont’s daughter, Narece, burst into tears at the plight of Melbourne’s homeless, both knew they had to do something to help. By chance they came across a YouTube video featuring people crocheting mats out of cut-up plastic shopping bags, and the Facebook group Plastic Bag Sleeping Mats For The Homeless was born. “I have a friend, Indi, who was living on the street and that got the spark started,” says Deniz, a registered nurse from Sandhurst. “We had a weekend in the city for Narece’s birthday and she was quite confronted by the homeless situation. She burst into tears and said ‘You’ve got to do something, Mum; this is insane what’s happening’. So we came home, did some research, came across the video and put the Facebook group together.” That was in April. The group now has 1500 members from across the Peninsula and as far away as Queensland, from school students to retirees. Between them they collect the bags, cut them into strips, loop the strips together to make plastic yarn – or plarn – and crochet the plarn into mats, which are then handed out to the homeless through the Port Melbourne-based charity Anonymous X. It takes 600-700 plastic bags and about 40 hours to make one mat, but it can literally mean the difference between life and death. Indi has spent 16 weeks in hospital with third-degree pressure sores on his spine from sleeping rough; other homeless people have fared even worse. “How can someone close to my heart suffer like that when having one of my mats could have saved him from that,” Deniz says. “People think we’re just trying to make homeless people more comfortable - no, we’re saving people’s lives.” One of the first to join the group was Lilly Guglielmino, of Frankston, who has become Deniz’s 2IC. “As soon as I saw (the group) I thought I have to join it,” Lilly says. “It just really touched my soul.” Anyone is welcome to join the group. Its Facebook page has videos on how to cut the shopping bags into strips, tie them together to create plarn and crochet the plarn into mats, but your involvement can be as simple as collecting the bags. Icon Synergy’s Mt Martha Project – ‘Shearwater’ Originating as Michael O’Sullivan & Associates, building company Icon Synergy has a 30 year history on the Mornington Peninsula. With projects spreading from Portsea to Mount Eliza, Icon Synergy is responsible for some of the Peninsula’s most coveted homes. Shearwater House sits on a look out in Mount Martha, with spectacular views over Port Phillip Bay. The block was steep and undulating, and the local terrain is notorious for ‘floating boulders’, which can add expensive surprises to earthworks and footing preparation. The design and build components worked together to minimise cutting of the site, and avoid the need for expensive earthworks. To build a home of this scale (4 beds, powder room, gym) with such a simple selection of materials takes a lot of work to make sure each junction and finish join consistently with high quality. The interior design included extensive cabinet making, with luxury timber veneers, a production process Icon managed and then oversaw installation of on-site. They also needed to marry the joinery components with a glass walled void in the centre of the house.

Their magnificent 3 acre sanctuary on a cliff top overlooking Port Phillip Bay and Ranelagh Beach will, for the first time in 39 years, change hands. The couple who have opened their garden (and their hearts) to the public every October and November for the past 23 years to raise money for children with life threatening illnesses, are downsizing. They are both aged 82. It is time, Reg explains, to farewell this magical place they built, planted and nurtured from the ground up, for something smaller. Elaine spends up to eight hours a day preparing Earimil Gardens for the open days. “There’s sadness, there’s no doubt about that,” Reg says. “For the open weekends we had something like 24 people – family and friends – helping us and a lot of them are older than we are.” Earimil Gardens is without doubt one of the best known private gardens in Victoria. End of an Era at Earimil CONTINUED scheme, they did it independently, with the help of family and friends. Earimil Gardens open weekends were held in October and November every year; groups arrived midweek by the busload; and the Smiths welcomed overseas visitors by request. “A lot of friends would come and help on the big open days,” Elaine recalls. “You’d have a couple on the gate, a couple cooking sausages and so on.” In 2004 Elaine published a beautiful hard cover book documenting her journey, titled ‘Earimil Gardens. My Labour of Love’. In 2009 she was awarded an OAM and she is a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. By the time Earimil Gardens held its final open weekend in late 2014, Elaine and Reg had raised and donated more than $1million to charity. The couple will remain in Mount Eliza – they are moving to a home near the village with what Elaine describes as a “baby garden”, but parting with Earimil Gardens will not be easy. “It’s going to be so hard to leave,” she says. “I had the most wonderful time setting it up and having all those open days and the buses. I just loved it.” What will she miss the most? “Just the relaxation of going out to work in the garden, it’s the greatest way to relax,” she says. And her favourite spot up by the top bridge, especially in the spring.
Off to the races Balnarring’s Emu Plains Racecourse came alive once again on Saturday, November 5, to launch the 2016– 17 horse-racing season. Patrons rolled in by coach and car for picnics and celebrations, not to mention a punt or two, at this picturesque location. Race-goers enjoyed six keenly contested races, with a healthy turnaround of punters circulating through the bookmakers’ ring and TAB throughout the day. The youngest horse-lovers were also well occupied, in between the scrumptious offers of the food stalls, making the most of the playground and children’s rides, which were loads of fun and reasonably priced. Saturday, December 3, marks the day of the next club meeting,
with the first race kicking off about 1pm. A date traditionally used by businesses or work groups for Christmas functions, those interested in inquiring should contact the club secretary. The club has another meeting on Sunday, January 15, ahead of the running of the Balnarring Cup on Tuesday, January 26, for Australia Day, which is generally bustling due to holidaymakers enjoying a break on the Peninsula at this time, so patrons are urged to arrive early that day. Maree Abbott works hard. Hard at her job, hard at connecting with clients and hard at having the best time she possibly can. This Mount Martha 60-something local loves to work and works to get the job done properly – plus she seems to know everyone! We are sitting downstairs in the Mornington Village Centre. Virtually every third person who walks by says hi to this stylish woman who began her modelling career at the age of five, has been in the shopping centre business for more than 23 years and has dropped half her weight after having Lap Band surgery 10 years ago. She was the instigator of Fashions on the Field at the Mornington Racing Club (circa 2000) while on the Mornington Chamber of Commerce and instigated the now huge Main Street Mornington Food and Wine Festival. “There were only half a dozen stalls outside The Grand when we first started. You wouldn’t know it now. When we did Fashions on the Field, we raised the highest prize money ever given to the winner ($15,000!) and had over 100 entrants”, she explains. “I began at the Bambi Smith Modelling College in Melbourne because my mother thought it was very
important to hold yourself well as a young lady. We went every Saturday morning and I was on the catwalk until I was 16 years old. I modelled for Sportsgirl (and others) as a teenager and did a few commercials.” She smiles. “My husband and I relocated from Mount Eliza (where Norm had built houses) to Mount Martha near Bentons Square around 2004. There were only 15 stores when I became the Centre Manager. There were 42 when I left.” Maree credits much of her success to being able to listen to people and her McDonald’s customer service training (she was McDonalds Marketing Manager for 16 years and approached local schools for staff). She has worked in shopping centres from city to coast – think Geelong, Camberwell, Burwood and Lynbrook and has no plans on slowing down. “I was 126 kilos 10 years ago. The weight had somehow just piled on. My Lap Band surgery was a great success. I’ve had no side effects and am 65 kilos now. I love working and see no point in stopping,” - which is great news for the Mornington Village Centre where she gets things done efficiently and with a very big smile. “I don’t know how I did half the things I did,” she continues, but energy, inspiration and communication sure play a big part I think. “I just faked it until I made it. Oh, and I never gave up!” She still doesn’t.

Maddie Stock isn’t your average teenager. One minute this young Mount Eliza woman, 19, can be found dressed in a pirate or fairy costume painting children’s faces and the next she’s strutting her stuff on an international catwalk in designer evening wear. Maddie has spent the past few weeks in the Philippines, after she was invited to represent Australia in the prestigious Miss Asia Pacific International Pageant. It’s a far cry from her annual summer gig at Frankston Beach as a Sand Sculpting Australia face painter and her work as a face painter for children’s parties and special events dressed as a Disney character or superhero. The gracious Mount Eliza Secondary College graduate, now a Diploma of Specialist Makeup student, accepted the invitation, took a quick course in pageantry etiquette and lined up against more than 40 hopefuls from around the world. “I like to try different things,” she explained before the event. And, it seems, that trait runs in the family. Older brother John, a 27-year-old electrician, graced the pages of Mornington Peninsula Magazine last year after he was invited to represent Australia at the international Mister Pancontinental Australia 2015. Brother and sister have the height for it, with Maddie standing 5’10’’ and John a staggering 6’7”. And how did big brother fare? “He finished fourth runner up, won Mr Photogenic and Best in Interview,” proud mum Emily explains. And while the lure of international pageants is exciting, Maddie is keeping her feet planted firmly on the ground, recently winning a 2016 Hair & Beauty Industry Association Student Apprentice & Educator Award, taking out the Diploma of Specialist Make-up category. Among the many unknowns before Maddie departed was the outfit she would be wearing in the national costume category. It was waiting for her in the Philippines. “It’s being made over there. It’s inspired by the Sydney Opera House, but I haven’t seen it yet,” she said. The Miss Asia Pacific International winners were being announced as

For the past nine years a Frankston couple have been shining a little light into the lives of children with special needs. It all started 17 years ago, when Trevor and Sandra put up four Christmas motifs and a few strands of lights on their house at 1 Lulworth Place. As the display grew – from the front of the property to the carport and fernery, backyard and second storey – so did the number of people coming to check it out. So nine years ago they decided put out a donation tin; they don’t charge admission but thought they could help out a charity or deserving organisation, and eventually they settled on the Frankston Special Developmental School. “Two years prior a lovely man, the late Rudi Geppert, who was the PE teacher at the school, knocked on the front door and asked if we’d mind if he brought a couple of busloads of the children around, and we were absolutely
over the moon to have them here,” Trevor said. “So when we still hadn’t organised who we were going to collect money for, we went round to the school and spoke to the principal and within two hours they’d arranged a collection tin for us, a laminated letter to put on the tin to say who the money was for … they bent over backwards to help us.” Since then they have raised close to $25,500 for the school, only requesting that it be used for projects the school would otherwise be unable to fund. In 2012 the school was able to put on its own Olympics and invited Trevor and Sandra along as the Olympic King and Queen. The money raised last year was used to fund the 2016 school concert. FSDS principal Scott Tucker gave Trevor and Sandra front-row seats. “It is just absolutely mind blowing what those teachers and support staff do for those kids,” Trevor said. “It was really hard to sit there and not get a tear in your eye.” The Commonwealth Bank in Karingal does not charge
them to process the donations, and Big W Karingal assists by selling the lollipops Trevor and Sandra buy for the children who visit the display at cost price. Trevor and Sandra don’t count how many people wander through the display each year, but last year they gave away 4500 lollipops. The display, which is insured for $40,000 and adds $400 to the household power bill, starts going up in the first week of October and is turned on at 8.30pm on December 1. “Early in the month we turn it off at 10.30, but as it gets closer to Christmas - especially weekends - we’re on until 11pm or later, depending on whether people are here. “We do this not for ourselves – this is for the community and more importantly for the kids – that’s what this is all about.” Mr Tucker described Trevor and Sandra as “heroes of the Frankston community”. “They do not ask for anything in return. They’re stars.”

In recent years we have seen a huge rise in the number of visits being made to Port Phillip by cruise ships. This season 28 different ships will call. The Seabourn Encore is the newest of these, having been completed only recently. Her first passage will begin on December 4 from Greece and her official naming ceremony will be held in Singapore on January 7, 2017. She will reach Melbourne in February and will return again in March. Built at the

Fincantieri Marghera shipyard near Trieste, Italy, for Seabourn - the luxury cruise section of Carnival Corporation - she can carry 150 more passengers than Seabourn’s earlier cruise ships. Her 300 suites all have balconies and she has all the features expected in the best cruise ships. People under 50 years of age might well believe that making a cruise during the warmer months began with the cruise
ship industry’s recent surge in popularity, but this is not the case. Cruises around the Australian coast, to New Zealand and to the Pacific Islands were very popular in the early years of the 20th century and up to the end of the 1950s. These cruises, however, were really just passages on the normally scheduled services of the ships of the Australian coastal passenger lines. Ships provided a more comfortable and often a faster way to travel than the railways. Many older residents of the Peninsula will remember the names of some of these ships and could, at the time, have identified regular callers such as Kanimbla, Duntroon and Manoora. During the current ‘cruise season’ well over 80 calls to Port Phillip will be made by cruise ships, with some visiting several times. The season was opened by Carnival Spirit on October 25 and will be closed by Golden Princess in April 2017. Dates of arrivals and departures can be found on the Port of Melbourne website. The

Brian Troy and fellow University of the Third Age (U3A) Mornington artists settled among the flamboyantly colourful ‘Playboy’, ‘Brass Band’ and other spectacular varieties now in bloom at the Mornington Botanical Rose Gardens. Painting ‘en plein air’, the advanced watercolour art class mixed paints on palettes as they prepared to capture the studied beauty of the magnificent old and new rose varieties. Tutor Margaret Thompson talked about the differences in working outside in the natural environment and painting inside in the contrived space of a studio. “When painting

Watt a way to get around Vintage electric bikes have arrived on the Peninsula. Hand-built in California, these are e-bikes with a difference – better technology, more power, smoother acceleration and undeniable style. When 3500 tonnes of sand is deposited on the Frankston foreshore this month, more than 20 sculptors from here and overseas will begin transforming it into a fantastic world of dinosaurs, dragons, pirates and princesses. Among them will be Frankston’s Peter Redmond, who has been sculpting for Sandstorm – the company behind the Sand Sculpting Australia events – since 2006. “I’ve been told I’ll be working on the gingerbread village, Candyland, so that will be interesting,” Peter said. “I get to work with a Canadian sculptor we’ve had out quite a few times – I’m pretty excited about that because he’s an amazing sculptor. They’re the people you like to work with because they’re the ones that’ll help you value-add to your skills. I’ve been doing it professionally for 10 years
and I’m still learning.” Peter, whose background is in design and illustration, was introduced to sand sculpting through a work association; within a few years the bug had bitten him and he decided to give it a go. “You tend to find a lot of the people come from design backgrounds – industrial designers, landscape designers, graphic designers people whose work is spatial issues. “I really enjoy doing major events in Frankston every year because we get such high-quality internationals coming in – if you see them doing something you haven’t seen before you ask them about it, or if you’re sculpting a female face and you have issues and it’s just not working for you, you can always get help, and that’s knowledge you can keep. Those are the little increments that build up your career. “Initially, when I was just starting to sculpt, everything was a challenge because you’ve got to learn new skills and understand
ways of working with sand, and part of that is understanding the sand itself because everywhere you go the sand is different.” In Frankston the sculptors will be working with brickies’ loam from Langwarrin, to which water is added until a Play-Doh consistency is achieved. It’s then compacted into formwork, hand-sculpted into shape and lightly sprayed with a
biodegradable PVA glue so it doesn’t reabsorb moisture. A small sculpture can take a day or two to complete if there’s a lot of detail; the team of sculptors in Frankston will take about two weeks to create their display, Lands of Imagination, which opens on Boxing Day. It will be preceded by Santa’s Sand Land from December 16-23.

Luluc are a product of the Melbourne music community, they established themselves in in New York and their music has been embraced on a worldwide scale. Signing to SubPop for the release of their 2014 album Passerby, Luluc quickly rose as significant artists in the US indie music scene. As well as paintings, highly popular items in this annual show, says Whistlewood’s co curator Susan McCulloch, are licensed design homewares such as cushion covers, mugs, teatowels, salad servers, Christmas ornaments, glasses cases and teapots. New products this year include socks, milk jugs, laptop covers and backpacks as well as new designs of existing goods. “It’s a very colourful range and it’s very exciting to see it expanding with these new items,” says Ms McCulloch. “The designs are licensed from the paintings of Aboriginal artists in the Western Desert community of Yuendumu, those of the Pitjantjatjara lands of northern South Australia and those from the Tiwi Islands.” The licensing is organised in partnership with the Aboriginal-owned art centre the artists own, she says. “Each artist receives a royalty on sale of their goods and this provides them with an ongoing and often quite substantial income. The items themselves are very beautifully designed and packaged and make for excellent and unusual Christmas gifts.” The Christmas show finishes an exciting year of exhibitions and other events for the McCullochs. In January they launch their 2017 exhibition programme with a new departure for the gallery with a large landscape exhibition of 40+ paintings, works on paper, jewellery and small sculptures by leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists whose work displays a strong connection to place. Called 20/20: A sense of place, the exhibition features Mornington Peninsula artists as well as those from other parts of Victoria, Queensland, the NT, SA, NSW, WA and

Coastal Sea & Beachscapes throughout Summer at The natural world of Janette Mouat BY LIZ ROGERS
Janette Mouat’s art is delicately layered, detailed and dramatically representational. Her affinity with nature is profound. This is painting that pays homage to every last detail of her natural subject’s form and the result is quite stunning. Mouat works with water colour and still gets a major thrill from watching where the water and paint will travel when they hit the paper’s surface. All her paintings are created to pass from generation to generation. She uses acid free paper and mount boards, conservation glass (to reduce UV damage), plus only the best quality Winsor and Newton paints. By self admission she works slowly. “I can take three to six months to complete one work. First I draw in pencil then I paint and begin layering. I used to mainly do botanical illustration, but have spent recent years exploring larger floral works.” Her wildlife series on show (alongside her botanical works and floral studies) at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza this December includes a magnificent zebra and giraffe (Mouat lived in South Africa with her husband and regularly travelled to Botswana). Kai Smythe (pictured) is looking forward to the 2017 Peninsula Short Film Fest (February 3-5). The 2016 winner will, however, play a completely different role 12 months on from his win. This year Kai is designing a MercedesBenz photo booth for the event, based on his artwork. Festival goers will be able to snap a selfie with Kai in the booth and share via social media. It is shaping up, Kai says, to be “a lot of fun”. “I’ll be making it myself,” he explains. “I’m a set builder as well as a filmmaker. The photo booth will be made in the style of my films.” The 2017 Peninsula Short Film Fest is gearing up to be an extravaganza. A story of contrasts There’s something about Christmas. A kind of warmth and quiet joy it evokes: a hold that reminds you of hope. The original story is of the baby Jesus, born to young parents in rough conditions and under a sky of angels proclaiming joy and good news at his birth. It’s a story of contrasts and one that still resonates today. Inspiring celebration of family, friends and other good things, this season manages to hold life’s challenges too – a reminder of the possibility of light and hope in dark places. Capturing the essence of farm life The new limited edition photographic print range by interior decorator and stylist Sarah Elshaug is a guest exhibit at The Big Shed, Balnarring. Titled Elsie + Hugo (after two of the cows), this photographic print range features portraits of four of the family cows who live at Vista, Sarah’s family farm in Balnarring. The works capture the essence and character of each cow in a unique and striking way. Featured in the range are Elsie, the prettiest of the mob, an Angus who is a terrific mum to her babes; Hugo, the boss, a purebred Charolais bull who looks after his ladies
like a gentleman; Levi, son of Hugo, who was born in April and has the cutest little face and delightful greyish coat; and Molly, an Angus/Hereford cross with a painted face and who is the cheekiest of the cows, always chasing up anyone ready to feed her hay. Summer fun so cool it’s hot
Take the kids to Frankston Arts Centre these summer holidays for a journey around the world to explore their creative side. Hot Arts for Cool Kids is a funfilled arts and craft program designed to encourage children to let their imaginations go wild. The theme is Around the World, so your child can explore the elements of travel as they sew, sculpt, draw and paint. Whether it be painting an aeroplane or
drawing a map, this program has been designed by artists and art therapists to encourage family engagement and creativity. Previous participants have stated that they “wish they could stay for ever and ever” and that this program is “one of the best activities they have done with the kids”. Commonfolk Coffee’s head chef Roong Saisombat has been named the 2016 Soar Awards Woman of the Year. Roong was awarded at Soar Collective’s annual awards for Australian businesswoman on November 11, at the Mornington BMW showrooms. Born in Thailand as the fourth of seven children, Roong’s passion and persistence have seen her rise through the hospitality ranks since she migrated to Australia. She has held the role of head chef in numerous kitchens including, formerly, the Ranelagh Club in Mount Eliza and now Common Folk Mornington. Roong and her husband also own a thriving catering business Finesse Catering. Roong learned to cook while helping raise her younger siblings. “My whole

This year has flown by and we’ve suddenly hit December. It’s now time to set aside a day or two to reflect on how your business has performed in 2016, as well as a strategy for a bigger and better 2017. If you can’t block out a whole day or two, break it down it into three-hour blocks. Here’s a few tips for what to think about and questions to ask yourself: 1. W hat have been my biggest achievements this year? 2. W hy did they work? 3. W hat hasn’t worked well for my business this year? 4. W hy hasn’t it worked? 5. W hat could I have done differently for a better result? Next, ask yourself ‘What do I want to achieve in the new year?’ And then break it down into quarters and set three goals per quarter, one big goal per month.
Think about these goals now: 1. W hy do I want to achieve these? 2. H ow will I achieve these? 3. W hat action can I take each week, to contribute towards achieving my quarterly goals? 4. H ow will I measure my progress? 5. H ow will I reward myself for achieving each quarter’s goals? Goal setting and planning should be fun! Grab some A3 paper and map out each quarter. Use different coloured markers or post-its for different types of goals, for instance: sales metrics (product/service package), revenue and/or profit goals, number of customers/clients, brand awareness/marketing, etc. When setting goals for yourself, make sure they are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound. Enjoy the process!

Some of the team have recently returned from the national Rest & Catering Awards dinner in Sydney, where The Rocks Mornington was awarded the Bronze Savour Award for Best Seafood Restaurant in Australia, out of 12 finalists from across the country. Name: Kathleen Quealy Job Title: Winemaker Quealy Winemakers
Kathleen Quealy, of Quealy Winemakers, has been named Wine Communicators of Australia Inc’s Legend of the Vine for 2016. She is the first woman to receive the honour. Kathleen made the first unwooded chardonnay in the country in 1990 and joins a prestigious Legend of the Vine list that includes Rob Hirst and Iain Riggs. Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke with Kathleen about the win and a little about herself:
What does it mean to be the first woman to receive the WCA’s Legend of the Vine honour? Many women are successful in the wine industry as winemakers, viticulturists, marketeers and the sheer business of operating in a competitive environment; good to broach another glass barrier. Tell us a little (or a lot!) about yourself and what has led to this honour It was a team effort making Mornington Peninsula the crucible of Pinot Gris/Grigio in Australia. My husband Kevin McCarthy and I convinced three land owners to plant Pinot Gris in the late 80s; Madeleine & Patrick McCabe significantly planted the largest vineyard – a hectare in Merricks. Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris to this day remains the benchmark of Australian Pinot Gris. Pinot Gris now accounts for more than 10 per cent of Australia’s white crush. You made the first unwooded chardonnay in the country in 1990. Can you tell our readers a little about that? Kevin and I both appreciate a great cool climate vineyard
managed with love and skill has enough intangible qualities to create fabulous distinctive unwooded white wine. When people drink wine in comparison to say beer or spirits they want each bottle to be distinctive – that is the effect of treating premium vineyards with love and skill. When Kev and I arrived on the Peninsula in the late 80s we were amongst the first qualified winemakers. I think knowledge gives the individual an advantage in forging their own style. What qualities does it require to be a great winemaker? There are a lot of great winemakers out there – as a team I think Quealy Winemakers is – as an individual I am something else. Great winemaking requires primarily great vineyards that are properly managed; then knowledge, experience, patience, insight, hard work, a great palate, a government that does not tax you out of business, customer support and a couple of good vintages in a row. What do you love about the Peninsula? The beach, the bush, farms, villages, people to hang

A mild start to the season has allowed our summer crops to settle in nicely, and it is now time for you to expect accelerated growth and some early harvests. There is still time to plant most of your warm season vegetables, including tomatoes, potatoes, capsicum, chilli, eggplant, your cucumber family, beans and corn. Secondary plantings of many including cucumber and corn are going in as well as continual plantings of leafy greens. While the veggie garden is doing its thing, it is a good time to pay close attention to your fruit trees and berries. It’s always exciting to see the continual swelling of fruit all around us, but there are many insect and animal pests around to spoil the party. Don’t let an isolated problem become a detrimental one. It doesn’t take long for an unnoticed gathering of aphids or caterpillars to decimate an otherwise productive tree. While certain “clean” sprays have their place, it is always better to try to remove an insect pest problem by mechanical means; a good squirt with the hose or a squish with your fingers. Large outbreaks may warrant

a spray response, but do keep in mind the populations of beneficial insects that will likely respond and feast on your pest problem. Which brings us to everyone’s favourite…netting your fruit trees from animal pests. Whether they fly or climb, are native or introduced, they still want the same thing. If your trees are large enough and heavy bearers you may be happy with a few losses. But if you have small trees and are eagerly waiting a limited harvest then mechanical protection is often required. Whatever system you chose, be it poly or steel hoops, grand structures, individual fruit bags, spooky plastic owls or wildly flung loose nets, they’ll all help protect your lovely fruit (except maybe the spooky owl). It is important though when netting your trees that you are not restricting vegetative growth, as contorting and breaking of new growth will in most cases reduce the following year’s harvest. The reason why we erect structures well higher than the upper canopy is to allow for the new growth, but also to avoid leaf and bud stripping when the nets come off. Another way you can help your fruit trees over summer

is to remove excessive vegetative growth. Often our healthy trees will put out a lot of new shoots, many of which will be pruned off in winter as we continually shape our trees. Pruning this new growth while it is young has a number of advantages. Most importantly we can encourage more fruitful trees next season by removing unnecessary shoots. This encourages the growth of more fruiting wood. It’s also much easier to snip new soft growth than lignified woody branches. While you are in the orchard you may also want to remove any excess fruit at a young age to offer optimum nutrition and moisture to the rest of your harvest. You can do this simply by reducing the number of fruit per bunch or branch. For example a bunch of 5 or 6 apples may be reduced to 2 or 3. It is certainly worth experimenting with this. So long as our irrigation systems are functioning well and our veggies and fruiting plants are heavily mulched, we may again enjoy a long growing and harvesting season this summer.
