BOGAN BINGO The peninsula volunteer branch of Make-A-Wish Australia presents Bogan Bingo at 7pm on Saturday August 23. Come along and enjoy a Bogan inspired game show, for a fun night at PCT in Wilsons Road, Mornington. BYO nibbles and drinks and join a table of 10. Attractions include raffles and games and a silent auction. Cost is $35. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. The power of the wish has shown to make a major difference to the mental, emotional and even physical health of a seriously ill child. The joy is felt by everyone involved from recipients, volunteers and the community.

When you book your wedding at the Portsea Hotel, you will have the personalised services of wedding co-ordinator Shannon Lott every step of the way. “Each bride and groom have their own individual requirements and we are here to make their day everything they envisage,” says Shannon. “I am passionate about co-ordinating each wedding and I make myself available to each bride to contact throughout the whole wedding planning process. I personally meet with the bride and groom to discuss the finer details and answer any questions they may have.” Shannon has been a wedding co-ordinator at the hotel for about six years and you can tell she loves her job after winning Best Wedding Co-ordinator at the Australian Bridal Industry Awards this year. “The hotel also won two awards - Best Hotel Reception and, in accommodation, First Night Honeymoon,” says a very proud Shannon. “I have to thank my amazing brides and grooms for rating us with almost perfect scores. We work extremely hard to ensure each couple have the wedding of their dreams and this was reflected at the Australian Bridal

Industry Awards. “It is nice that everyone’s hard work was recognised. All of the staff at the hotel contribute towards the weddings and the accommodation so these awards are a credit to us all at the Portsea Hotel. “I am very passionate about my job, and working with each bride and groom is such a rewarding experience. I am very appreciative of their votes.” Shannon says seeing each gorgeous couple on their wedding day makes hers such a rewarding job to have. “I really enjoy working with people and this job gives me the opportunity to work alongside each couple while planning their wedding day. I also work closely with the chefs, managers and function staff and I couldn’t do it without all of their hard work. I feel so lucky to have found a job that is so rewarding and that I am truly happy in.” So what sort of person does it take to be successful in the highly competitive wedding industry? Shannon says her background of hospitality since she was 13 has definitely helped. “I have worked in hospitality on the Peninsula

for many years and I have always loved working with customers. Before becoming the wedding co-ordinator I was part of the Portsea Hotel functions team, waitressing at weddings and helping with the set-up of the ceremonies and receptions. Over this time I have built up strong working relationships with all the staff here at the hotel and this helps me to work with staff during the preparation of each wedding. I think this background has also given me an insight into how each wedding is unique, and how important the day is to not only the bride and groom but also their families.” Shannon says the Portsea Hotel is unique among wedding venues, not least because of its stunning location. “The wedding ceremony area and reception rooms have uninterrupted views of Port Phillip Bay. This backdrop is the perfect setting for a wedding. “Unlike at other venues, I am the direct contact person for each couple, and this makes it more personal. I aim to make the process as stressfree as possible and I am here to help every step of the way. This personal approach gives couples the peace of mind that everything is being looked after and their day will come together smoothly. “We also have our own dedicated wedding chefs who design and create our wedding menus. All of our menu items are prepared fresh in-house by this team of chefs. The menus have choices to cater for a variety of tastes and needs and the quality of the food is second to none.” The Portsea Hotel has everything in the one venue, with 25 rooms and a stunning bridal suite. WORKPLACE

BULLYING

Reports of workplace bullying have become increasingly prevalent over recent years. Such behaviour can severely disturb individual conceptions of self and value, and cause significant damage to an individual’s health and well-being. However, workplace bullying does not just affect the person being bullied. It can have far greater implications. In particular, workplace bullying can be highly detrimental to businesses. The cost to employers can include the loss of morale and productivity, higher staff turnover, management down-time in addressing bullying claims and dealing with the effects of bullying, as well as damage to the company’s reputation. The Federal Government’s Productivity Commission estimated that workplace bullying costs the Australian economy a total of between $6 billion and $36 billion every year (see Productivity Commission, Benchmarking Business Regulation: Occupational Health and Safety, March 2010). Notwithstanding this, until recently there was no Federal or Victorian legislation which specifically addressed workplace bullying. The matter generally fell under State occupational health and safety legislation and, in serious cases, the criminal law. This changed most significantly when the Federal

Government introduced new workplace bullying laws with effect from 1 January 2014. Under these laws, a worker can now apply to the Fair Work Commission for an order to stop bullying. The term “bullying” is defined as repeated unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker, or a group of workers, that creates a risk to health and safety. The laws make it clear that bullying does not include “reasonable management action carried out in a reasonable manner”. So, for example, the reasonable allocation of work, legitimate disciplinary action, and appropriate performance management should not constitute bullying. There are a number of steps that employers should take to try to prevent bullying in their workplace, including introducing robust policies with respect to bullying and ensuring employees receive appropriate training on these policies. Further, if any complaints of bullying are made, employers should take appropriate steps to respond to them, including possibly arranging for an independent investigation to be conducted. Profile: Chris Knight Spend five minutes in the presence of Chris Knight and you’ll start wondering, what you’ve been doing with your professional life.

At just 37, he’s already been the Managing Director of Opteon Property Group Victoria – the largest thriving division of one of the country’s top property valuing firms – for over three years. He’s also had two successful businesses of his own and he’s working on his second Masters degree with plans to do a third. Oh, and he’s a pilot too, just because he can. It’s an impressive resume for anyone but especially for Knight who has done it all under his own steam. When he took the reigns at Opteon Victoria in 2011, the business was going through a challenging patch both operationally and financially, but under his steady direction, it’s now in the spotlight for all the right reasons. “We put in place a very different structure to what is seen in the industry and it’s working really well,” he said. “Opteon Victoria had a really good core nucleus and team but the business was lacking innovation, direction and most importantly stability. We launched into an organisational restructure, which was challenging but left the business stronger and in a better position to consolidate its new strategy. “We break product silos and focus on geography. This means our people can more easily cross product specialisations increasing their learning potential and improving exposure to different parts of the business,” he said. “It keeps people interested and challenged so our retention has been fantastic. We don’t lose too many people. We’re now coming up to 200 employees in Victoria and next year sees us significantly in excess of that.” Knight said his vision for Opteon Victoria was to continue to shake up the traditional approach to doing business. “We are still focusing on growth in core product lines but I am passionate about creating something different – not just another property company,” he said. “We’re in a rapidly developing world. I just spent some time in the US to understand what the US market is doing and how they are innovating. Australian companies, particularly property are not strong in areas of innovation. “I want to assess things like globalisation and efficiencies through scale among other things. I want to see growth and diversification and have a positive impact on the career opportunities of our people. “At some time, we’ll absolutely look to acquisitions or mergers of synergised businesses – anything that could potentially improve the value proposition to our clients we will absolutely look at. I have got my eye on a few things currently” Change is viewed as an opportunity for Knight. “One of my favourite sayings is, ‘A business that stands still is actually moving backwards’,” he said. It’s an ethos that carries over into his personal life too. “My wife and I have a habit of moving house every few years,” he said. “I do a bit of renovation and speculation – it’s a product of

working in the industry. “It’s the biggest joke amongst my friends. They say, ‘we’re coming over – which house are you living in now?” High school sweethearts, Knight and his wife Kellie have been together since they were 16 years old and were married at just 22. They now have two sons aged seven and three. Knight says of them, “They are my world. They’re fantastic kids”. The family lives an idyllic life on the Mornington Peninsula, a stone’s throw from where they both grew up. The small-town boy has come a long way since the longhaired days of his youth. One of five kids in a working class family, he was the only one to finish a university degree. His rise to the top has been startling but he’s remarkably unpretentious about it. “I keep coming across this perception that I’m young to be sitting in this seat but I don’t feel young or old, I just feel like I have a job to do,” he said. “Age is something that people use only to limit themselves. If you see a barrier, it invariably becomes a reality. “I don’t see any limitations. I would encourage all people to think bigger. It’s about outcome and it’s about delivery.” He credits his success to simple hard work. “It doesn’t matter what role you do, it’s understanding what your skill set is and who you are as a person that will make you succeed,” he said. “You are only ever as valuable as you are able to deliver good outcomes. Everyone is expendable, including me.”

Donna Treadwell has been rescuing dogs “pretty much since I was knee-high to a grasshopper”. Little wonder, then, that in 2012 she established Staffords In Need, a volunteer-staffed group that help dogs and dog owners, with a particular focus on staffordshire bull terriers and American staffordshire terriers. The group’s motto is: “Doin’ it for the dogs, one dog at a time, never stop.” Donna has worked as a volunteer for other organisations for many years, but it was the loss of her dog Dooee that prompted her to start Staffords in Need. Staffords In Need assists dogs and their owners in various ways, Donna

says. Owners will sometimes contact the group to surrender their dogs, and whenever possible Donna and her team will work with them in a bid to keep owner and dog together because it can be very hard to re-home a dog. One of the ways in which Staffords In Need has been able to help is with fostering dogs. Last year while undergoing treatment for cancer, a dog owner had her dog cared for by Staffords In Need. This allowed the dog to eventually be returned to her. Others have had their dogs fostered for up to five months while they found new accommodation for themselves and their animals. When it is possible to re-home a dog, great care is taken to ensure both parties are suited to each other, Donna says. “We won’t re-home with another fresh every month

dog if they haven’t lived with another dog in the past.” Donna works with the other members of the group by fostering the dogs in their own homes, usually one at a time, and also by assisting dog owners with training. “All I ever wanted to do was to own dogs and help as much as I could,” she says. Staffords In Need also works with other dog pounds, including in Mornington and Mildura, to help dogs in need. Staffords In Need is a volunteer group and relies upon the generosity of the community please visit the site below for further information on donations. All Aboard

The Rye Express! by Robert Whitehill

Have you ever tried to get to Melbourne from the Peninsula’s west coast without a car? If so, you would know you have to take a Route 788 bus to Frankston station, then change to a train for the rest of the trip.

Together, these modes of transport could take up to two and a half hours, meaning Rosebud residents have to board the bus about 6am in order to get to work in Melbourne by 9. And if you miss that 6am bus, you have to wait at least 40 minutes for the next service, so you would not get to work on time.

( 16 The peninsula’s favourite funky SQUARE magazine

A proposal has recently been put forward that could solve the issue of early-morning starts and transport swaps: a new train service called the Peninsula Rail Link. The proposed Peninsula Rail Link is a new train line that would branch off from the Stony Point line at Baxter and run as far as Rye, stopping at Mornington East, Mt Martha, Safety Beach, Dromana, McCrae, Rosebud and the Rosebud West/Tootgarook border along the way. Trains on this line would take passengers all the way to Melbourne in one hour and twenty minutes without having to change trains at Frankston, shaving a whole hour off your travel time. The proposal would see trains from Rye run as expresses between Baxter and the city, stopping only at Baxter, Frankston, Southland (which could be built as part of the project, if not before), Caulfield, Richmond, Flinders Street and Southern Cross. Some peak trains would also stop at Leawarra, the home of Monash University’s Peninsula campus. Also included in the project is triplication and electrification of the line between Frankston and Baxter (including the university at Leawarra), and new stations at Southland and Langwarrin. Trains from Stony Point would terminate at Baxter, where they could connect with trains to Melbourne and Rye, allowing for trains to run up to every

60 minutes. Duplication as far as Morradoo station is also being considered, allowing trains to run even more frequently, and even to physically connect with trains from Rye so both lines’ services could go all the way to Melbourne. (note map left only shows the Rye to Frankston portion of the proposal) Not only would the line take Peninsula residents to the city faster, it would also bring holidaymakers to the Peninsula more easily. This would allow businesses, especially in the tourism industry, to boom more than ever before. In addition, the line itself would create dozens of new jobs, from train drivers to train conductors to station staff to train maintenance crews. A single passenger train can take as many as 525 cars off the road. Fewer cars on the road means less traffic congestion and less pollution, giving road users a faster ride and helping make the Mornington Peninsula the ‘sustainable peninsula’ it strives to be. The community group making this proposal has its own Facebook page, also called Peninsula Rail Link, where you can keep updated on developments, show your support, ask questions and share feedback.

Mornington Peninsula Magazine will keep you updated on transport opportunities for residents and visitors of the Mornington Peninsula.

ARTHURS SEAT CHALLENGE NOVEMBER 9

More than 2000 runners are expected to enter this year’s 6.7km Arthurs Seat Challenge on Sunday, November 9. The climb to the Arthurs Seat summit is to support a reduction in road trauma for young people and to raise money for the road safety program Fit to Drive (F2D). The challenge will start at 8.30am near the Rosebud Pier and finish at Seawinds Gardens at the summit of Arthurs Seat. The Arthurs Seat Challenge is one of the strongest community events on the Mornington Peninsula. Held annually since 2002, it aims to promote the profile of the F2D program and raise community awareness and support to enable the program’s fantastic work across Victorian schools. The tragic loss of young Peninsula lives in 1999 and 2000 prompted school principals to establish F2D in a bid to reduce the road toll, especially among inexperienced drivers. It promotes the philosophy that it is essential to enable and encourage young people to explore, take risks, and accept challenges but also to take ownership and responsibility for their own safety and that of their peers. At the heart of F2D is the Arthurs Seat Challenge, which is an opportunity for schools, families and the community to rally together and raise awareness of the over-representation of young people in road crashes in the hope we can alleviate the pain road trauma causes schools and communities. Fast, effortless food for any time and place Anjum Anand is heralded as the Nigella Lawson of Indian cooking – her beauty, passion for fresh ingredients and enthusiasm for home cooking have garnered her a legion of fans. Having worked around the world in innovative and acclaimed restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, and New Delhi, Anjum has cultivated an approach to Indian food that is fresher, lighter and simpler to cook at home. Very health-conscious, she is constantly working to bring down the fat content of Indian food, creating lighter, fresher dishes with all the rich, spicy flavours of the subcontinent. After her first visit Down Under in 2013, Anjum fell in love with the multi-cultural palates of Australians, and she is determined to raise the status of Indian food beyond the takeaway. She is on a mission to show Australians that Indian food can be sophisticated and healthy as well as a delicious treat. Anjum was one of the first writers to create Indian recipes for the health-conscious cook, and her back catalogue comprises a groundbreaking health, lifestyle and diet approach inspired by the principles of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian science thought to have formed the backbone of many Eastern holistic medicines. Ayurveda seeks to completely understand the relationship between food and the body. According to Ayurveda, what you eat can affect how you look and how you feel as well as your health. Anjum has been following the principles of Ayurveda for the past eight years and tries to use its basic tenets to create recipes that are not only delicious but also nourishing for the body and soul. Anjum’s new release, Anjum’s Quick and Easy Indian, shows us how we can all create a delicious curry in just 20 minutes, and provides tips on stocking your cupboards with time-saving ‘cheat’ ingredients and a plethora of hints on how to make cooking Indian at

home as easy as possible. The ‘Take One…’ feature shows you how to make three great meals from just one ingredient. Whether you’re feeding the family, puzzling over how to jazz up vegetable dishes, or entertaining friends, there’s something here for every occasion. A wealth of spicy salads, using fresh vegetables and grains, will suit the modern lighter style of eating, while a chapter of fabulously fresh Indian tapas makes entertaining a dream. After a busy day at work, throw together Anjum’s lamb kebabs with a yoghurt-apricot relish in 10 minutes flat, or make tandoori salmon tacos the children will adore. And save room for pudding: a luscious ginger chai tiramisu that will satisfy even the most jaded palate. Anjum now has her own range of Indian sauces, chutneys and pickles called The Spice Tailor. Find them at Coles supermarkets, and grab Anjum’s Quick and Easy Indian (Quadrille/RRP $39.95) at good bookstores across the Peninsula. Wardle House welcomes boys and girls from Prep to Year 4, with a girls’ only approach to learning from Year 5 onwards. It is dedicated to educating the whole child through inquiry learning with the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP). This allows learning to be authentic and meaningful, enabling students to explore complex issues that cross traditional subject boundaries. A key to the success of the Wardle House program is the belief that all students respond effectively when teachers communicate high expectations. Head of Wardle House, Mandy Whitworth explains, “It is crucial for effective learning and academic success, that students take charge of their learning, are confident in their ability to meet challenges, and make considered choices in order to reach their personal best.” At Wardle House there is a strong focus on developing the values and dispositions that will enable students to think clearly, act with integrity, and to make decisions for themselves to readily tackle challenges in learning. Through their work, students acquire and apply a range of skills in communication, self- management, research, thinking and getting along with others. “We want students to be tolerant, creative, curious, appreciative, enthusiastic, confident, respectful, committed, co-operative, independent, and to be people of integrity and empathy,” says Mandy.

The Musicians, The Performers, The Showman

Term 2 at Woodleigh was defined by beat and song. From Early Childhood through to VCE, our students played, sang and jived their way through some incredible and memorable performances. At Minimbah, the Junior Campus Musicale showcased performances by every student, from Foundation (Prep) to Year 6. Class groups, ensembles, choirs and bands all took their turn on the boards to belt out hit after hit after hit. The breadth of Minimbah’s Music Program was wonderfully illustrated; from Classroom Program performances, through to the Year 5 and 6 Music Workshops. A collection of Year 6 soloists also shared their talents with the audience, each performing with confidence and poise. A particular highlight was the massed performance. Seeing students commit so enthusiastically to entertaining the audience; singing with such joy and passion, created an amazing atmosphere – the Hall was buzzing.

If it was buzzing there, it nearly blew apart at the Senior Musicale. VCE soloists variously serenaded and shredded. Rock bands put their own stamp on tracks old and new, and the talent shown by the wind, brass and string groups far outweighed their years. In Term 3, the Performing Arts focus shifts to theatre – and the Woodleigh School performance of ‘Barnum’. Based on the life of Phineas Taylor (PT) Barnum, who famously proclaimed that “there is a sucker born evr’y minute,” this musical production takes full advantage of Woodleigh students’ vocal, dance and circus skills and is a show for all ages. Barnum is playing in the Woodleigh School Senior Campus Hall on Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 August. Tickets (Adults $15 – Students $10) are on-sale now via Eventbrite and the Woodleigh School website. So, come one, come all to the greatest show on earth! woodleigh.vic.edu.au

PHYSIO STOPS RUNNING INJURIES IN THEIR TRACKS A local physio is aiming to stop common running ailments, one runner on the peninsula at a time. Most runners have had to deal with their share of training related injuries which stem from a variety of reasons including body imbalances, poor technique, overtraining and incorrect footwear to just name a few. Morgan Deegan, the principal physiotherapist at Physio+Fitness Clinic, as an ultra-marathon runner and 6 x Ironman, has seen them all. “I have an expertise in biomechanical issues, particularly with runners and triathletes. For many injuries I see, there is a muscle imbalance or poor activation of deeper muscles. The trouble is, most people don’t know they have this problem. Once the problem area is diagnosed, a specific strength and technique training is often enough to fix the problem and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.” Everyone is different, and as a result the treatment plan is discussed at length with the athlete to educate people

on their condition and likely factors that have enabled it to develop. Ms Deegan has put together a special offer for readers of the MP magazine. Morgan is offering a running assessment consultation gap free, with no out of pocket expenses. The specialised assessment is aimed at guiding runners on the best way to train for a run and how to reduce injury. The consultation will include tips on how fast and how hard to build up, when to rest, specific running based stretching, nutrition and more. HOW TO BUY A DIAMOND ONLINE SAFELY There’s a clear value proposition to anyone looking to buy a diamond ring online, but Anthony Hansen of Diamond Coco offers some expert advice on doing so safely. Check they have a physical address. Just because you are buying a diamond online doesn’t mean you want to deal with a backyard operation. An online store with a physical address is more likely to be reputable than one that doesn’t. A handy hint it to google map the address from street level and see if they look genuine. Research the retailer. Google the name of the company you are dealing with to learn of any good or bad client experiences. A search of ASIC will also show you how long the business has been in operation as well as any name changes. Negative reviews or a company trading only a few months would be well worth avoiding. Communicate with the retailer. The majority of problems with buying a diamond online are due to a lack of communication between the retailer and customer. Make sure you communicate things like deadlines and requirements such as budgets and expectations regarding the diamond, ie: no black marks. Any reputable seller

AUGUST 2014 (34)

will want to ensure that you are happy. Always pay by credit card. Credit cards give consumers a lot of protection. For a myriad of reasons, if you are not happy with your purchase, or did not receive it, you can lodge a dispute with your credit card provider, who will investigate and refund your money if need be. Some retailers will add the merchant fees so you need to take this into account. Either way its cheap insurance. Obtain shipping and return costs, either from the website or in writing. All good websites should include the cost of shipping and the cost of returning the diamond. If not, then obtain this information through email so that you have it in writing. Ask questions! All good online retailers should be able to provide additional information about the diamond you are buying. By asking questions it not only helps build confidence with the company you are buying from, but they may offer alternative diamonds for you to consider. Stick with GIA or AGS certified diamonds where possible. Unless you are on a super limited budget, diamonds with certificates from lesser

quality labs such as EGL or IGI may seem cheaper, but they also have a less strict grading policy. Finally... Don’t buy from an online retailer that you are not 100% comfortable with. Whilst the same is true of a traditional bricks and mortar store, when buying online you are removed from the face to face contact. If the diamond you are buying seems too cheap (even allowing for online pricing) or if the communication with the retailer appears flakey then look elsewhere. Diamond Coco is an online retailer with a physical showroom at Suite 6, 38A Main Street, Mornington. They may be contacted on 1300 230 430. read online www.mpmag.com.au

Mount Eliza Flood Alleviation Project Mornington Peninsula Shire is currently working towards reducing flooding to the Mt Eliza shopping precinct as part of its Local Integrated Drainage Strategy (LIDS). In the past the precinct has been subject to serious flooding during severe wet weather. This means drainage infrastructure must be improved to reduce the likelihood of future flooding to businesses and surrounding homes. Works will be undertaken in stages to reduce any disruption to shops and local traffic. It is envisaged that road closures and driveway access restrictions will be kept to a minimum and that a safe environment will be maintained for community members and contractors at all times. Night works have been scheduled for a period starting from Sunday 27 July for six weeks. Traffic diversions will be in place during this time. For further information and details of the project location please visit the Shire’s website or contact Chris Lyne, Drainage Project Manager on: 5950 1294.

HASTINGS TO BENEFIT FROM AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT CENTRE The MPJFL, in partnership with BlueScope Steel, is pleased to announce the introduction of a year-round Australian Football Junior Development Centre at BlueScope’s Hastings facility. After an intensive search for a location where both players and coaches from all MPJFL clubs could refine and further develop their skills, it was determined that the Hastings facility would best suit players of all ages. The facility incorporates a 170m x 125m fully irrigated Australian rules oval, change rooms, pavilion, warm-up areas and learning centre. The partnership will see the MPJFL development squads and coaching operations based out of the BlueScope facility. MPJFL president Andrew Souter said this would be the first facility of its kind in the region that could be used on a year-round

basis, and he thanked MP Neale Burgess for his assistance with the program. BlueScope Steel’s Hastings manager, Bob Pullein, described the partnership with the MPJFL as “an integral part of our community program, which will have a long-term benefit for children within our region”. The MPJFL also moved its administration headquarters to the Hastings Community Hub in July. The newly developed $3.4 million facility will include meeting rooms, exercise areas, administrative support, staff training and a range of community programs. In other junior football news, this year’s Bendigo Bank MPJFL finals series will be held for the first time at Red Hill with the support of the Balnarring Junior Football Club and the Red Hill junior and senior football clubs. With big crowds expected, the four-week finals series will provide a significant spin-off for Red Hill businesses and the community.

Right Gear, Right Bike, Right Place Mornington Peninsula Shire has joined Victoria Police to spread the message to recreational vehicle users across the Peninsula: right gear, right bike, right place. Cerberus Ward councillor David Garnock said the safety message was particularly important since the council passed an amendment to the local law enabling the police to seize and impound illegally ridden and unregistered recreational vehicles such as mini-bikes, trail bikes and motorbikes. “Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has worked closely with Victoria Police, which has received high numbers of complaints from the community relating to individuals riding unregistered vehicles illegally, to introduce the amendment to the local law as a deterrent to illegal and dangerous behaviour and to improve community safety,” Cr Garnock said. Mornington Peninsula Local Area Commander Inspector Karen Nyholm said the change to the local law was expected to be an effective tool to address illegal recreational vehicle use. “Community safety is our priority and the illegal use of these

bikes often causes property damage and presents real physical threats to people and children walking around the streets,” Insp Nyholm said. Scott Morone, from the Motorcycle Action Group in Hastings, said the message should be clear. “Illegal recreational vehicle use is often very dangerous, with offenders riding unregistered motorbikes without the proper safety equipment on land not designed for the purpose,” Mr Morone said. “MAG works with the community to promote safe bike use, and we want people to stay safe by doing the right thing: right bike, right gear, right place – and importantly the right attitude.” For further information about safe bike practices, refer to www.spokes.com.au People witnessing illegal recreational vehicle use should phone 000 during the event. If you have information about illegal recreational vehicle use, please contact the Hoon Hotline on 1800 NO HOON (1800 664 666).

Boost for SecondBite Mornington Peninsula Shire is encouraging more food retailers to sign up to provide surplus fresh food for SecondBite’s Rosebud food delivery program. SecondBite is a not-for-profit organisation that distributes free surplus produce to food relief agencies and community groups throughout Victoria, where it is transformed into hearty, nutritious meals for vulnerable people who simply cannot afford to feed themselves and their families. Woolworths at Rosebud Plaza has already signed up, with Coles at Rosebud Plaza also set to join the program soon and donate fresh, healthy produce to disadvantaged Mornington Peninsula families and food relief agencies each week. In April 2013, SecondBite began deliveries of up to two tonnes of fresh, nutritious produce to Rosebud Memorial Hall each Monday. The produce is then collected by 13 food relief agencies for delivery to their clients. Fresh food is also collected by more than 100 clients of Southern Peninsula Community Support and Information Centre. The weekly collection is co-ordinated by the centre and volunteers with the support of Bendigo Bank and Mornington Peninsula Shire. Centre manager Jackie Currie welcomed the announcement of more retailers joining the program. “The extra produce from local food retailers is great news and will help us and SecondBite to assist more clients and food agencies with healthy produce each week,” Jackie said. “The program would not be possible without the support of Bendigo Bank and the Shire, and the tireless work of our volunteers.” SecondBite Victorian state manager Doug Saunders thanked all of the food donors. “The fresh produce will help us to meet the increased demand at food relief agencies on the peninsula, and I encourage other retailers and growers to contact SecondBite to collect their excess fresh produce.” By participating in this program, food retailers will receive

STORAGE recycling accreditation with the Shire’s Best Bites food sustainability program and membership of the Western Port Biosphere Reserve. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Antonella Celi said this expansion of the SecondBite program meant that more agencies and clients would be provided with free, healthy produce and that the amount of food waste sent to our landfills would be significantly reduced. “The SecondBite program on the Mornington Peninsula is in line with the Shire’s Local Food Strategy, which aims to connect local people to local produce,” Cr Celi said. “SecondBite - with the help of local organisations - can make an immense impact on our community by helping provide fresh, healthy produce where it’s needed most. “I commend food retailers at Rosebud Plaza who have come on board, and I encourage any other local food retailers who are interested in participating in the program to contact the Shire or SecondBite.” For more information, please contact the Shire on 1300 850 600 or www.secondbite.org Pictured: Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Antonella Celi with Southern Peninsula Community Support and Information Centre manager Jackie Currie, Bronwyn Ralph from Bendigo Community Bank Rye, Seawinds Ward councillor David Gibb, and SecondBite Victorian state manager Doug Saunders.

The First Shot

The sun rose on the 5th of August in 1914 like it did on any other morning. People ate breakfast and set about their daily business the same as they had done the day before and as they assumed they would the next.

They were wrong. Britain declared war against Germany at 11pm on Tuesday evening August the 4th London time (9am Wednesday 5th Melbourne time) and the world began morphing into a place where men went away wearing uniforms and came back clothed in the indelible scars of battle or were buried in a place they didn’t call home. Things had changed. Australian Prime Minister Andrew Fisher pledged full support for Britain in the battle with Germany. This resulted in 416,809 Aussie blokes signing up to do their bit. At war’s

AUGUST FISHING

end on the 11th of November in 1918, 58,961 of them had been killed and 4,089 were missing. The first shot as prelude to this monumental chapter of human history took place in our very own backyard at Point (Fort) Nepean in Portsea. This is how the story goes… The Pfalz freighter was the one and only German vessel in the port of Melbourne when war and dawn broke one hundred years ago. As news spread, so too did the steam from the vessel’s funnel as it made haste in search of deeper waters and finding its way home. Travelling towards Port Phillip Heads, the Pfalz had already been released from RAN inspection near Portsea as all her papers were in order. It was full steam ahead until the artillery HQ at Fort Queenscliff (who had just received word of war and controlled the coastal batteries at Forts Nepean, Pearce and Queenscliff), ordered Fort Nepean to stop the vessel. fight was on. An initial flag signal for the vessel to ‘heave to’ was released but the Pfalz wasn’t having a bar of it. She continued towards the Heads, hence the first 100lb Prac 6” round was fired (the first shot of the war in the entire British Empire) from Gun Emplacement No 6 at Fort Nepean. This was three hours and forty-five minutes after war had been declared. It landed about 50 yards astern from the ship which ultimately surrendered and history was set in stone. There will be a commemoration (the first of many to be held world-wide in countries that comprised the former British Empire) at the Parade Ground at the former Officer Cadet School within the Quarantine Station at Point Nepean National Park on the 5th of August from 11am til 1.30pm. A single shot will be fired at 12.45pm. Gone, but never forgotten. For more info see www.thefirstshot.com.au/full-page by Liz Rogers

With the bulk of the winter chill behind us it’s time to start getting serious! The biggest surprise packet of late has been the peninsula whiting. Locals from the area have been getting some reasonable fish from around Sorrento and they will get fatter and more consistent as the year gets older. Truck loads of salmon have been showing up at most of the land based piers. Rye, Sorrento, Blairgowrie and Mornington have all produced massive numbers. Dusk seems to be the most consistent bite time with soft plastics and metal slugs being the best way to catch them. Fish are ranging from 400g to 1.5kg. Around the beach at Sunnyside has seen a heap of pinky snapper mixed in with the salmon. The hard part is wading through the undersized fish to get a legal one. Great fun on soft plastics to kill a few

hours on a calm afternoon. Calamari are still in plague proportions from just about everywhere. An easy land based option with 2.5 and 3.0 sized squid jigs working best.

WESTERNPORT:

If you want an early snapper then Westernport is where you need to be! Corinella, or up around Joe’s Island have been the best and fresh calamari is easily the best bait. There has been reports of a couple of fish nudging 20lb already too so make sure you take advantage of the best early run of snapper we have had in years! For the full MASSIVE fishing report log onto www. ifish.com.au. You can also text your fishing reports to our reports hotline on 0427 693 759. Keep the reports coming and head on down to Tackle World Mornington to say Hi! Team Tackle World Mornington.

The CLS Toothbrush Project in 2014

The CLS Toothbrush Project has been very much alive over the past few months, according to Georgie Debenham and Amber Jones. “We have been improving the lives of those most important,” they say in their latest newsletter. Every three months since it began in November 2012, the CLS Toothbrush Project has handed out a new toothbrush and toothpaste to each student at CLS. Visits to see the dentist are also a huge part of the project. The most recent was last May, and the students are due for a second visit later this year. Also in May, however, students undertook a general test, with only 13 of the 38 passing. “The students just aren’t learning as quickly and in the way they should be,” Georgie and Amber said. “They are all eager and willing to learn; however, they have little support, and the school is significantly understaffed and underqualified. “Part of the CLS Toothbrush Project includes the employment of Saophorn, a local woman who runs all things under the hygiene sector of the school. Mr. T, the director of the school, sees potential in her and knows that if she were to be given the opportunity to attend university, she would be very useful. We are aiming to raise funds for her to attend a reputable university in Cambodia. “With the aim of coming out of it with a teaching degree, Saophorn would be able to teach English to the students the way that they deserve to be taught. Bringing in a knowledgeable and educated teacher will result in a hopeful and brighter future for all. “We need an extra $300 a year to support Saophorn throughout her university degree. Having an enthusiastic teacher enables the students to have a supportive and encouraging learning environment, which will show some much-needed improvement in the students’ results. We don’t want to see only 13 out of 38 students pass; we want them all to reach their potential.”

Georgie and Amber believe it’s important to keep supporters of the project informed about where exactly their donations are going. Almost half (47.5 per cent, or $700) goes towards toothbrushes and toothpaste, with $600 (40.5 per cent) for Saophorn’s wages, $120 (8 per cent) on soap and water, and $60 (4 per cent) on transport to the dentist. “We greatly appreciate the support we receive from all those who have helped and continue to help us. Without all of you, we wouldn’t be able to make any of this possible, so thank you.” For more information please see the following links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_0i2WYF2X8 http://www.chumkriellanguageschool.org www.facebook.com/CLSToothbrushProject Pictured: Georgie Debenham, Saophorn and Amber Jones in the CLS center. To all of those who have supported the CLS Toothbrush Project, We have compiled a brief update on what we have been doing, how everyone at the Chumkriel Language School is travelling, and what we are planning on doing in the near future. Please take the time to have a read. We are so appreciative of all the support we have received, we wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for all of you, so thank you! Warmest Regards, Georgie Debenham and Amber Jones

PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE achieving your goals. Life these days can seem hectic and out of balance and our health can often take a back seat. We repeatedly reach for the quick fix or the next “fad” diet which only leaves us feeling hungry, low in energy and ultimately it just seems too hard. Well not anymore, let me show you easy and practical solutions to a healthy and stress-free lifestyle. Being a mum, a wife and a business owner I understand how hard it can be to be “superwoman” while trying to live a healthy life! Through my experience and knowledge I hope to educate and inspire others on how to become a healthier, happier YOU! Innovation in OHS If you run a small business in Australia then the term Occupational Health and Safety might immediately raise your hackles. Feelings of outright frustration are not uncommon and ultimately, OHS for small business is more than likely to be placed in the ‘too hard’ basket – or so it was – until now. Cue Angela Yearsley, a Mornington Peninsula local and OHS Professional. Angela has been working in the field of OHS for over 12 years, but it was not until she had children that she realized her best chances of advancing a career, with a healthy work / life

balance, was to start a business of her own. Using her experience in OHS as well as assisting her husband run his small business, Angela took the plunge as a business owner. Angela found a gap in the market for an affordable, online OHS service, tailored specifically for small business. Two years of product design and development and Realistic Safety was born. Realistic Safety offers an innovative online tool allowing small business to work independently from OHS consultants and their dreaded ‘hourly

rate’. For the people who want that extra guidance, a service can be customised to suit their needs. Angela thrives under pressure and there is nothing like running a business, assisting in another business and wrangling two children to keep life interesting! Angela’s “slightly amended” saying is ’If you want something done, give it to a busy person mum’! Angela Yearsley www.realisticsafety.com.au 1300 236 748

“Seven years ago I heard an advertisement for a wedding. I had always thought there was a market for a website that sold designer invitations at a reasonable price. I rang the organisers of the expo and was able to fill a last minute stand cancellation. In five days I created a range of 30 designs, a catalogue and a website. The expo enabled me to get a snapshot in 8 hours whether the idea was worth pursuing. I had orders placed that day have not looked back since!” Fi Fy Fo Fum Designs was born and now provides a full range of event stationery specialising in invitations, RSVP cards, place cards, save the date cards, thank you cards, birth announcement and more for any of life’s special events.

Balancing work and home can be tricky but Fi has some rules that she sticks to: “On work days I must be in the office by 9am. I make sure I am dressed in a professional manner and house duties must not be done during work hours. It is amazing how little household tasks can sneak in and take over the day. These rules seem insignificant but it helps me have a clear division between work and home, helping me run a successful business and balanced home life.” Fi Fy Fo Fum continues to grow and was recently was awarded the title of ‘Best Home Based Business’ in the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston Business Awards as well as being a finalist in the Melbourne and South East Suburbs Micro Home Base Business category. LATEST NEWS FROM MANYUNG GALLERY 2014 Archibald painting at Manyung of her profile, close photography of Well regarded Mornington Peninsula artist, Drew Gregory, has painted a fellow, well known Mornington Peninsula resident, Tania Zaetta, for the 2014 Archibald prize. Tania is a noteworthy subject being a long standing media personality here and Australia’s first Bollywood actress. Drew has made the portrait a massive 130 cm x 250cm depiction of everything important and relevant in Tania’s life. Drew said, “my plan was to do multiple images of the major aspects of her life” in a series of posters, altogether onto a huge billboard. The torn paper approach represents “peeling back the layers” of Tania’s life leading to the title ‘T.Z. Peeling back the layers‘. Preparing and painting of the Archibald entry ran over 6 months. Meetings with Tania, initial detailed sketching

(especially) her eyes, and research on her film and television background. “With Tania’s media commitments it was hard coinciding with her”, said Drew. His subject was doing 18 hour days, on air in Sydney at the time the portrait was being painted. The works are coming out of the Archibald Show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and due to arrive at Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza in mid August, where it will be on display for everyone to enjoy.

See Janine Daddo on Trams

Melbourne Festival, Arts Victoria and Yarra Trams have announced the second year of the Melbourne Art Trams project, a public art project that transforms Melbourne’s iconic trams into moving works of art travelling across the city. This year, Manyung Gallery represented artist, Janine Daddo, is one of eight artists chosen to adorn the Yarra Trams network as part of the visual arts program of Melbourne Festival. Artworks will be generated as digital images which will be outputted onto adhesive vinyl and applied to the trams. Janine has enjoyed over 15 years as a successful and much-loved, popular artist. She has held sell-out shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin and has enjoyed

international market success exhibiting in Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States. It’s not difficult to see just why so many have been captivated by Janine’s seductive colours, freedom of forms and tantalising textures. Her work pulsates with a natural exuberance for life and represents the most significant aspects of life: love, family, happiness and excitement of everyday life. ‘I think love is an emotion that ties the universe together.’ – Janine Daddo Janine’s next solo exhibition will be held at Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza in November. Lynley Dodd: A Retrospective 1 August – 21 September 2014 This is the first exhibition to celebrate the works of the famous writer and illustrator Dame Lynley Dodd and Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is the only Victorian venue to host this magical exhibition. Today Lynley Dodd’s name is synonymous with her creation, the

unkempt dog, Hairy Maclary. The result of a small sketch of a scraggly pooch she drew in 1979, Dodd penned a few lines underneath the drawing and Hairy Maclary was born. More than five million books of the little dog’s story have been sold worldwide and it has been translated into several languages making him an international character. Lynley Dodd worked as a cartoonist for newspapers in the 1970s and created her first picture story book in 1974, My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes, in collaboration with Eve Sutton, still in print today. Since then she has written and illustrated thirty books, winning the Children’s Picture Book of the Year award four times. Lynley Dodd: A Retrospective showcases 59 original sketches and drawings from Dodd’s popular children’s books, including the Hairy Maclary series, the Schnitzel Von Krumm series, Slinky Malinki and Scarface Claw. The Tallis theatre’s resident instrument is a sonic delight, beautifully hewn from Huon Pine. “They asked us if we would like another one, on sort-of permanent loan,” said Beleura director Anthony Knight OAM. “They were moving the factory and they seemed to think it would be safest here.” “So we will presenting duo piano works. That was the idea behind it all, because some of John Tallis’ music was composed for four hands,” Anthony said. Two acclaimed pianists, Bonnie Brown and Louisa Breen performed together on July 30. While for those curious to know what Gershwin would sound like on two pianos, presentations featuring the two instruments are forthcoming. Accomplished pianist Stefen Cassomenos will perform at 1.30pm on August 21 and 28. Stefan justly celebrated on his recent return from a recital tour in the UK. Hold The Pickle Where there’s love, there’s life.

Lisa Walton catches up with old mate and much-loved Melbourne comedian Rachel Berger, who will bring her very local story to FAC on August 28. Rachel’s connection with Frankston is a deeply gourmet one. During the early 1970s her brother and father owned a deli in what was then the Tom the Cheap building in Ross Smith Ave. Berger’s Deli Emporium was a huge shop for its time, and it was there that her father introduced the people of Frankston to the biscuit crust Philadelphia cheese cake and Helen’s European cakes, as well fresh Turkish delight, Greek cakes from Swan St in Richmond, and limburger and harzer cheese. “In Melbourne in the late ‘50s and ‘60s there were whole suburbs occupied by a single ethnic group - Greeks in Brunswick, Italians in Carlton, Jews in St Kilda,” says Rachel. “But on the Peninsula there were several different immigrant groups. As people moved around because they had market gardens or milk bars, delicatessens and fruit shops, they shared their history, their stories and most

importantly their food and ingredients. It’s powerful stuff that I hope will resonate for the second and third generation of migrant families here on the Peninsula.” Rachel Berger is known for delivering her rapid-fire lines with assertive virtuosity. In Hold The Pickle, however, she leaves the microphone behind and opens the door of her parents’ delicatessen to serve up stories of love, loss and longing, fear and belonging. Oh, and schnitzels. Berger’s Delicatessen was at 101 Acland St in St Kilda, and in the 1960s and ‘70s Acland St was an oasis to which Europeans from all over Melbourne came to speak in their mother tongue, to laugh, to cry, and to eat … and eat … and eat. Their hearts and families were broken by war and geography and many more were polluted with grief and betrayal. In this true story we meet Rachel’s parents - also broken - but like so many others they defied their captors and,

with their last measure of love, energy and imagination, rebuilt their lives. This is no mere sentimental nostalgia trip, however. Rachel creates an emotionally rich portrait of her parents’ life story, and her own, where scores of characters come to life to raise our spirits and fill our hearts. The Age describes Hold The Pickle as “wry, funny, truthful, with a hint of gherkin”. Broadway World.com says: “Do whatever you can to get a ticket; (this is) a story that will fill your heart with joy.” “Memories live not just in words but also in emotions,” Rachel says. “They’re passed from parent to child by osmosis. These memories form who we are and how we live our lives. “Hold The Pickle resonates for everyone because we all remember the times we felt like outsiders, or indeed when we first met someone we found intriguing, precisely because they were different to us.”

Experience the laughter, the tears, the tenderness and the love. Expect plenty of emotion, but you will find yourself laughing through your tears.

If you have any connection to European immigrants or Melbourne and the Peninsula’s deli culture this is a must see performance. Note it is for over 18’s only. Hold The Pickle, written and performed by Rachel Berger, comes to the Frankston Arts Centre for one show only on Thursday, August 28, at 8pm. A CLOSE KNIT FAMILY OF 3 KANGAROOS

MISSY THE FAIRY AND CLOWN Children’s Entertainer

Entertain your children for hours with Missy the Fairy or Clown.

Author Robert Liddell has released his new novel, Big Red, and Mornington Peninsula Magazine has copies to give away.

Missy will delight the children with face painting, a puppet show, games, dances and prizes.

Big Red tells the story of a close-knit family of three kangaroos who must use all their wits to survive the dangers of the Australian bush. Big Red is fiercely protective of her children, Stumpy and Patch, who, just like human children, are curious about the world around them. However, the bush is a dangerous place where hunters kill kangaroos, believing they’re doing the right thing. “The book’s message is a philosophical look at some of the issues that confront all of us,” said Liddell, a Perth doctor who has previously worked for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and as an airline pilot. “The three kangaroos are faced with situations that involve trust, love and ultimately the meaning of life.” Beautifully illustrated by Julia Landford, Big Red is available at the Bookpal website, Amazon.com and many other fine booksellers. For your chance to pick up a free copy, ‘like’ us on facebook, find the cover on our fb page and make a comment, three lucky readers will win. Go to facebook.com/MPMag.

Ideal for Birthday parties, Christenings, Christmas Parties, and any special occasion.

First Impressions

If you are looking for a precious keepsake that oozes individuality and aesthetics then look no further than the beautiful hand crafted jewellery at Pure Silver Impressions. Nikki Yoresh makes her delicate pieces with love. This magical range of finger, hand, foot and paw print jewellery (plus hand stamped or inscribed name tag jewellery) is cut, carved, filed and polished with great care and generosity of spirit. Nikki takes her time - something this

lovely can’t be rushed! ‘One of the best things about making this kind of jewellery is seeing a client’s face when they receive their piece. Their eyes… It’s very emotional’, says mum of three Nikki who began making jewellery in high school. (Her eight year old daughter has already begun making bracelets). ‘No two pieces are ever the same which represents how we all are – individual and special’. So how is it done? Nikki uses an inkless wipe kit process to take the prints and then presses the finger straight into the best quality 99% silver because she doesn’t want to lose any of the swirls or definition that makes them unique. Baby’s prints are incredibly popular, but both children’s and adult’s

prints can be negotiated, while Mini art (perhaps your child’s first drawing?) can also be set in silver. For those who don’t wear jewellery but want to have a keepsake of their loved ones close at hand, key chains are a great option - for forever and a day… 10% off all key ring orders for father’s day Pure Silver Impressions Call Nikki on 0439 658 319 to make an appointment or email Nikki@puresilverimpressions.com www.puresilverimpressions.com by Liz Rogers

DANCEWEAR, COSTUMING & ACTIVEWEAR

Nothing is more inspirational than family.... According to Mornington Peninsula born Carly Clark, “There is nothing more wondrous and miraculous than the birth of your first child. When our little one came along in 2008 we were overjoyed, in complete awe and full of overwhelming love for her.” With her arrival came the need and want to give her the very best of what the world can offer, so the search began. Pikapu was born out of a desire to provide an alternative to disposable nappies, their harsh chemicals and their impact on landfill. Another bonus we found with Pikapu nappies was financial: we couldn’t believe that by simply switching to cloth we’d save around $2400, and even more with a second and third child. So with that in mind we decided we just had to share our design so that many other families could benefit from an uncomplicated, effective and easy-care modern cloth nappy. It was finally here: a nappy that was no fuss, no snap in or out boosters, no covers, no pins and no soaking. It was everything you needed in one nappy, and it was one size too, so it fits from newborn to toddler, 3-18kg. Perfect. The Pikapu original modern cloth nappy is an all-in-one, size-adjustable cloth nappy. The outer polyester fabric is laminated in polyurethane to create a water-resistant barrier, while inside, comfortable microfleece layers draw moisture away from the baby’s skin into the highly absorbent microfibre core. The Pikapu nappy is loaded with features yet is simple, quick and easy to use. Many mums, dads, grandparents and other carers reach first for their Pikapus because of this. We look forward to sharing your experiences with baby from birth to toilet-training and making it as easy as possible for you to keep baby dry, comfortable and chemical-free. Join us and enjoy well-designed, durable products with continued support to get you through the toileting years. WARMING THE HEART WITH MASSAGE AND ART Suriya Lotus Spa and Nissarana Galleries at 3 Ground Floor / 211 Main St is Mornington’s premier Thai luxury spa and the therapies are based on the ancient Thai and Aryurvedic Healing Principles. The Spa offers a variety of healing body and pampering beauty treatments from the famous Traditional Thai massage to rejuvenating body scrubs and organic or the famous Thai gold facial therapy. All of which will leave you feeling and looking younger with an increased sense of wellbeing and mental calm more able to fend off the winter cold. This winter the spa offers a variety of warming treatments to relieve the cold humours that accumulate in our bodies over the these colder months. Cold can build up in the body and cause blockages in energy and result in illness. The staff have many years experience in the ancient art of Thai healing massage and will use methods such as warm oil massage and hot herbal compress to transfer heat into the body and improve circulation. Head masseuse Sasipha Budthep says ‘the herbal compress is particularly effective in relieving muscular and joint pain which is chronic or caused by the cold.’ The spa will soon have a heat sauna used to relax the muscles before massage therefore allowing a more effective healing. The spa special this month is a one-hour warm oil Thai massage for just $60. Whatever

the treatment whether it be a musculo-skeltal treatment or a skin rejuvenantion you will feel more alive and have a deeper sense of well being. The Spa, as many people now know, contains the gallery of internationally acclaimed and multi award winning photographic artist Visuddhacara Philip Ayres who has just won gold in the New York Graphis awards for his work ‘Survivor’ which is on display at the gallery over August. Philip’s work graces the walls of numerous collectors’ around the world making it a ‘must see exhibition’ when visiting Mornington or Hastings Street, Noosa. This month there are also specials on some of his most sort after works which will satisfy the astute buyer. Combining the luxury Thai Spa with its classic Thai décor, music and scents with Philip’s powerful and evocative images offers the visitor a unique experience to view these award-winning masterpieces and relax while at the same time receiving one of the famous healing treatments. A visit to the gallery and spa are a must for both local and visitors to the region. ARE YOUR HORMONES MAKING YOU Did you know that having an underactive thyroid contributes to 40% of people not being able to lose the fat. In some cases you can have an underactive thyroid even when your standard thyroid blood tests are normal. Imagine waking up each morning and bouncing out of bed after a great night sleep, happy and energised for the day. As you pass the mirror, you admire your body. People ask, what is your secret? If you don’t feel this way, you may have a hormonal imbalance.

WHAT DOES YOUR THYROID DO FOR YOU? The thyroid gland controls your body’s ability to burn calories, produce energy, have mental clarity and perform at your

best. When it is under functioning, no matter how many calories you cut or extra exercise you do, it is impossible to shed those extra kilos.

STANDARD BLOOD TESTING Blood test (TSH) may not tell the whole story. Detecting how much thyroid hormone is in your bloodstream, does not identify what is working in your tissues. So, if you do have a problem it may not be picked up by your doctor.

NEW TESTING AVAILABLE American thyroid specialists, Dr Konrad Kail and Dr Daryl Turner developed a quick, non-invasive medical thyroid screening test, which has been used by integrative US doctors for the past seven years to accurately diagnose and treat thyroid issues. Once the thyroid is balanced with nutrients and medication you can easily lose weight, increase your energy and feel happier in

yourself. So if you suspect your thyroid isn’t working quite right come visit me for a FREE test. You deserve to feel fantastic every day! Download your FREE ebook Top 10 Secrets to Healing Your Thyroid NOW at www.feelinggreatnaturopath. com.au/thyroid-testing/. To book a FREE thyroid screen call Julie on 0438593523 or email julie@feelinggreatnaturopath.com.au.

Fat? Tired? Sex is the last thing you want? Constipated? Cold? Losing your hair? Bloated? Craving sugar? Depressed? Irritable?

These are some of the symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Research shows us that over 40% of Australian women have an undiagnosed, underactive thyroid gland. Which means no matter how many hours you exercise or cut out carbs you can’t lose that spare tyre around the middle. Blood test results from your doctor may not pick this up. If you think you may be one of these women or men you deserve to feel fantastic every day so don’t put off getting tested with the latest technology from America.

fashion health & beauty KEEP CALM AND STAY BEAUTIFUL AT LU LA LA BEAUTY After working for years in the beauty industry, Lucy Norman finally decided it was time to follow her dream and so Lu La La Beauty was born.

WINTER BEAUTY TIPS ON A BUDGET Believe it or not, cold weather means dry, lifeless skin and hair so here’s a few ideas to keep you looking and feeling good despite the plummeting temperature. Flaky Face To keep skin from flaking, avoid products that contain alcohol, which is drying. Instead, use a gentle cleanser and switch to a richer moisturiser. Moisturise several times a day, and make sure to use a night moisturiser for extra skin hydration. Remember you don’t need to spend a lot on moisturiser to take good care of your skin. Red Nose The reason we get a red nose in winter is because the blood vessels dilate when the temperature drops so you still need to wear plenty of SPF 30 sunblock, even in the middle of winter. If you are flushed and red after being outdoors, apply a warm compress to the skin for just a few minutes and your natural complexion will return. Dry Hands Everybody hates dry rough hands and it is particularly common during winter. You can protect your hands from dehydrating by wearing gloves outside and by using rubber gloves when doing the dishes and laundry. Also keep a hand moisturiser close by and use regularly.

A professional beauty therapist with a personal touch, Lucy’s vision is to create a salon where clients can feel pampered in a comfortable setting. “I wanted to create a salon that was unique and a reflection of myself,” says Lucy. “Lu La La looks and smells fabulous, is calming and relaxing. I am committed to providing a wonderful experience and ensure all my clients come back time and time again. Being raised and using organic products, I have carried this organic focus into my business. I use and sell certified organic Sanctum products.” At Lu La La Beauty, enjoy much needed pampering that will not break the budget. Lu La La Beauty has organic facials from $40, body and spa treatments from $60, and a relaxation massage from $25. “We also do pedicures from $30, waxing and tinting from $7 and spray tans from $20,” says Lucy, a qualified beauty therapist

with experience from salons on the peninsula and across the state. “Each month I offer a special and for August you can get Brazilian waxing at half price.” Lu La La Beauty is at 16 Spray Street, Mornington. Phone 0422 403 663. www.lulala.com.au

PRODUCE DINING WINERIES Peninsula producers are praised by Melbourne restaurants and foodies as quality suppliers of popular staple produce. “There ain’t no duds in the Boneo spuds,” is a favourite catch cry. “Food production on the Mornington Peninsula is rich in diversity and quality and the food sector is a significant contributor to the local economy. It’s estimated value is more than $1.3b each year in output. This represents around 11% of the total shire economy and provides 5300 jobs or 12.5% of total employment,” according the Shire Agricultural Officer Gillian Stewart. Locavores believe that locally grown food is fresher, bettertasting, more nutritious, healthier and better for the local economy than mass-marketed factory farms goods, doused with chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and transported hundreds or thousands of kilometers.

The word ‘locavore’ was the word of the year in 2007 in the Oxford American Dictionary. Locavores are people who aim to eat food sourced from within their region. It is an aim, rather than a philosophy, such as veganism where the believer tends to adhere to a strict regime of what they will or will not eat. Locovores have a mixture of reasons for consuming regional produce, and the reasons also vary between individuals. A Tasmanian locavore might happily eat a ring of Queenslandsourced pineapple but only eat honey from Tassie. Others embrace self-sufficiency. Produce that is considered local is usually grown within

100km and sold within 24 hours of harvest. Some locavores simply want to support their local farmers and economy. Others are more mindful environmentally and aim to reduce the size of their carbon footprint, by reducing the energy used to transport the food over sometimes vast distances. People also become locavores for health reasons. Knowing that what they eat was produced with TLC and a minimum of processing. Farmers’ markets are one of the most important shopping venues in the local food movement. Peninsula-based farmers tend to find much of their appeal at the high end and boutique market niche. They often take more of a kid-gloves approach to realising their product, managing to adhere largely to organic methods, reducing the use of pesticides, and creating less waste. The Mornington Peninsula is the source of a great array of primary produce. Locally grown foods include beef, lamb, apples, olives, strawberries, potatoes, heirloom organic vegetables including leafy greens and tucked away in a warm niche in Main Ridge, Peninsula Avocados is enthusiastically marketing a quality crop.

Merricks General Store hosted Gary Mehigan’s book launch last week. We know Gary loves the Mornington Peninsula and of course our stunning magazine as well!

VARIETY BASH ABOUT TO TAKE OFF Harba host John Crossin is about to set off on his fourteenth Variety Bash. Driving thousands and thousands of Ks, aimed at helping needy kids, with a good dose of Aussie-style fun along the way. Since 1992 the Victorian Variety Bash has covered 93,288 kilometres and raised over $18 million for children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. This year the classic convoy will head to Noosa, stopping at Wangaratta, Corryong, Bowral, Sydney, Singleton, Armidale, Tenterfield and Kingaroy along the way. John will be joined by buddies John ‘Bubba’ Mackie and Robert Cooper, driving a fluorescent yellow-orange 1976 351 Ford Fairlane Marquis. “Every trip is unique,” said John. “They all have their own flavour. I loved going to Tasmania, even though that’s where I come from. I like

going to the heat. Alice Springs was magic and the trip to Broome was brilliant, up through the Gibb River. It’s about the trip, not the destination.” This year John’s team will donate around $60,000 to the cause. Largely thanks to sponsors including Mornington Car and Tyre Services, Carline Mufflers, Coastal Engines, Toyworld, Performance 4x4, Mornington Garden Supplies and Mornington Racecourse. Moorooduc Timber this year contributed $20, 000. “Being on the trip is like getting together with a family of beautiful people for two weeks of the year. All friends and all sorts of personalities do the Variety Bash each year. Somewhere along the line, something has affected their life, and they want to give something back, and you can’t do better than giving back to the kids. We are all there for a reason - to help the kids.”

Over the next 6 months the Social in Main Street, Mornington will be transformed into a host of unique and intimate spaces to eat, drink and be entertained, inspired by the lane ways of Melbourne. “Merchant Lane” is the brainchild of Paul Cameron, who over many years in marketing and promotion on the Peninsula created the iconic Bay Hotel, the original McCrae Pavilion & the Social. Paul, known as PC to most, has teamed up with hospitality expert, former Mornington Racing Club CEO, Fraser Bayne and fellow Mornington local Joel Hall, who at only 26 brings a youthful

perspective, a sporting drive and a specialist trade to this talented group. The boys have an exciting vision for now and the future. Stage one, the revamped Social looks fantastic and is already becoming the place to be with a great crowd both Friday & Saturday nights. The new look & ambience makes you want to stay and just enjoy. Coming events in mid August include the launch of the new food concept “share” and a Sunday afternoon, sure to be very popular. The Social 58 Main St, Mornington Ph 5975 2733

ALL ABOUT WINE

Fresh new look at Mornington on Tanti Looking splendid, now painted white and sporting a glowing renovation, the Mornington on Tanti Hotel is enjoying a fresh trend in Family dining, boasting a couple of u-beaut kid’s playrooms. Located at the front of the hotel, the children’s playrooms include a slide around a tree and a huge tangle of green ‘spaghetti’ tubes. The big kid’s room includes classic Pacman games and space for kid’s parties. Children’s meals are half price on Sundays and Mondays. Their menu includes popular and healthy items such as chicken-rice with vegetables, a roast, fish and pasta. Tuesday family night offers four meals, from a special menu, with a complimentary jug of soft drink, for $60. The hotel menu is updated with the seasons. Winter brings hearty dishes to the fore. Pub-classics include parmas, steaks and fish. A few exotic dishes always offer a taste of dining adventure, perhaps blending Vietnamese with Moroccan and African influences. The prime beef burger features a double patty of well-marbled beef, house-minced with added gherkins, fresh herbs and onion. The meat is splashed with spicy sauce amid layers of bacon, lettuce, tomato and tasty cheese and a side of chunky chips.

The Monday night curries are an affair for spice lovers. Varieties include Moroccan, Sri Lankan and Mauritian. The house-made vegetarian gnocchi has the option to add prawns or chicken. Chilli con carne is popular. The choice of $15 parmas each Wednesday and steaks on Thursday are well liked. Seniors Specials are always available. The Tanti Sports Bar features comfortable couches, pool tables and a smokers deck. The fully-featured TAB has details of every race. The dedicated Sports Bar menu keeps budget-minded diners in mind. The Mornington on Tanti’s entire upper floor features lovely, comfortable accommodation. The suites range in price, layout and size with many featuring balconies. Currently, during off-season, free upgrades to a superior suite are automatic with all bookings. The Beleura Penthouse suite straddles two large rooms plus an ensuite and balcony. “Our boutique rooms are of a high-grade boutique hotel standard” said manager Simon Tickner. In the fully updated and revised 32nd edition of Australian Wine Vintages, Master of Wine Rob Geddes provides readers with the definitive guide to selecting the best quality local vintages in any price range. Aiming to showcase the top 10% of wineries that consistently deliver quality, the popular pocket-sized book (also available as an App) includes detailed tasting notes, vintage quality and indicative prices for over 6,000 wines from 317 of Australia’s best wineries, with 19 new wineries included in this edition. It also includes an updated list of Certified Organic and Biodynamic wineries, a scoring page to compare the writer and wine show scores, and a quick guide to the various wine varieties and regions so you know what to look for. Below Rob lists his top wines from the Mornington Peninsula this year:

Top Peninsula Wines Montalto Hawkins Single Vineyard 2011 Chardonnay 95/100 $55.00 A tiny production of 4 barrels producing only 103 cases. Using uniform winemaking approaches allows the vineyard(s) to shine through as does early picking, whole bunch press, wild yeast, solids, lees retention, 100% malo, minimal sulphur to enhance fruit integration and texture. Creamy vanilla yoghurt and subtle oak aromas lead to an elegantly proportioned complex layered integration with natural acid freshness. Paradigm Hill Les Cinq 2012 Pinot Noir 94/100 $80.00 Ripe, fresh strawberry, raspberry and subtle spearmint aromas. In the mouth it has a juicy silky quality. The oak is subtle and the middle palate red fruits are very bright including beetroot, rhubarb and raspberry with a ripe buoyancy. Finish is layered and serious and needs to be consumed with age. Stonier Family Vineyard 2012 Pinot Noir 95/100 $85.00

Only 50 to 70 dozen made each vintage. Richly expressive and red rose and potpourri florals with raspberry in the background. In the mouth this is a full and rich textured wine with youthful red fruits and spice fruit flavours in the middle, big and bold and firm finishing and needs time to come together. Drink after 2017. Dexter 2012 Chardonnay 95/100 $38.00 A refined wine with power. Rich and generous with well-judged oak and fruit. The citrus stone fruit starts the mouth and in youth oak and nougat lees all tap dance across the mouth with excellent fruit length, texture, and fresh acidity. Stonier KBS 2012 Chardonnay 95/100 $55.00 As complex as the best Burgundy aromas with a Puligny like run of flowery chardonnay, mineral and very fine tight vanilla caramel French oak aromas. The palate is seamless, fruit rich, just ripe nectarine and pear, backed by quality oak. Your mouth is wrapped in stone fruit holding a steady creamy force and weight of elegance in the middle palate and finishing with lees and creamy structure. Excellent balance and harmony. Rob Geddes is a wine industry veteran, one of the few Australians to be awarded the ‘Master of Wine’, and author of Australian Wine Vintages ($35.00). The 32nd edition is now available at book stores or online at www.thegoldbook.com.au Mornington Peninsula Magazine once again has 6 copies of this fabulous handbook, to enter ‘like’ us on Facebook, find the post on our page and leave a comment. ROSEGPO, FABULOUS WINTER DINING Creating a perfect mix of meals and music, Rose GPO Hotel has evolved into a prime Southern Peninsula venue. Proprietors Sam and Breanne Austin with new head chef Patrick Bowring, the place is rocking. “Patrick’s fastidious style and attention to detail is a perfect fit for here,” said Sam. Patrick’s background and approach will channel a mix of contemporary creativity into the breezy, seaside town’s style.”I trained in Melbourne, in fine dining. I was fortunate to be part of the crew at three-chef’s-hat restaurant Circa,” Patrick said. “I know I was lucky because not every chef begins with the experience of working at the top level.” The menu has certainly been pumped up under Patrick’s guidance. More attention has been given to winter classics like spicy braises, while maintaining the importance of quality cuts of meat such as the Cape Grim porterhouse steaks, currently on special every Tuesday night. “We have a big emphasis on local suppliers, and new specials, and menu updates weekly,” Patrick said. “At the same time, I’m not reinventing the wheel, I know the locals love our

Corned Beef, Tapas and Pulled Pork Nachos.” Sharing and grazing fits favourably into Rose GPO’s style as the popular Tapas prove. “I’m aiming for people to think, wow, effort has gone into making this food.” Patrick said. Another popular favourite is the shared dish of slow-cooked beef ribs. “One of the salads is made with heirloom vegies from Horizon Farms in Dromana; their produce includes eight varieties of beetroot and other boutique, specialist ingredients. We chargrill their endives, to get some smoky flavour, and a ready-formed wilted base. I toss in some white nectarines, watercress, juice, oil and a sprinkle of fetta on the top. The taste is a mix of salt, sweet and smoky,” said the chef. Patrick’s desserts are a dream fest. “The ricotta-cinnamon donuts with salted caramel are just a perfect thing,” he excitedly informs. This dish is currently the favourite dessert at RoseGPO. An iconic popular dish that simply must be tasted! Other choices include vanilla creme brulee with pistachio biscotti, and a poached pear with almond crumble and ice cream The pear is long-poached in quality red wine

sugar-syrup, zapped with classic aromatics including cinnamon, cloves and star anise. A crumble is made from flour, sugar, butter and toasted almond slithers with desiccated coconut. Then partnered with the pear, vanilla ice cream and a swirl of syrup. Rose GPO offers stage-space to some fine musicians every weekend. It is also

the venue for some of the peninsula’s best cabaret shows, where fine food is partnered with music, catch Ron Vincent’s Cat Stevens Tribute with a four piece band, 2 courses and show is $65 – booking is essential. August this year will mark 20 years with Bakers Delight for husband and wife franchisees Annemarie and Rod. Deciding they wanted to work for themselves they bought their first Bakers Delight in Mount Eliza. Annemarrie says “we grew up on the Peninsula and at the time we had small children and wanted to be closer to family and home.” After 8 years on what Annemarie describes as “a very steep learning curve” an opportunity arose at Bentons Square to open another Bakers Delight, this is now their sole franchise. Bakers Delight Benton Square has a total of 20 staff members and with opening hours between 6am and

8pm Annemarie says “the staff work just as hard if not harder than we do.” They are very proud to be a team at Bakers Delight Bentons Sqaure, “As soon as the children were old enough they were both working in the bakery beside us and our daughter still works there” says Annemarie. “It wouldn’t work without the whole team from those that get out of bed at 1 o’clock in the morning to bake the bread to those that do the last sweep and mop at half past eight at night and all of those in between. It wouldn’t work without any of them” “We are grateful to all our staff and very proud of them for what they do each and every to produce fantastic bread and great customer service.” For more information or to contact Bakers Delight Bentons Square visit http://www.bakersdelight.com.au/ Guests of Eden Gardens shared canapés and chat with owners Simon and Anna Ainsworth, prior to enjoying a startlingly good performance of Shakespeare’s Henry V at Frankston Arts Centre. THE SECRET IS OUT! There is a large warehouse full of authentic French antique and vintage furniture and collectables in Seaford. And it is open to the public.

Bailey & Co import regular 40ft container loads of beautiful pieces direct from France and have been for the past two years and sell at wholesale prices. Each container arrival brings excitingly different pieces and regular customers enjoy rushing in after an unloading. You will find Armoires, beds, enfilades, cabinets, tables & chairs, bookcases, display cabinets, and many, many, other furniture items, as well as beautiful smaller collectables. It is a veritable treasure trove of goodies. Bailey & Co is a family run business with 3 generations of girls at the helm and is named after the youngest family member 4 year old ‘Bailey’.

Diane has been in the Antique business since the early 70’s. “We decided to source furniture from France due to the beautiful timbers, eclectic designs, workmanship, history and individuality of the pieces on offer.” Said Diane. Check the Bailey and Co website to see some of the beautiful pieces, although many of the items do not make it to the website immediately, or are sold before photographing direct from their warehouse. Liking their facebook page is also a great way to stay in touch with regular updates and new stock. Open Fridays 10am to 1pm plus Saturday & Sunday 10am to 3pm. DECOR HOME GARDEN

Permaculture is an often heard term, but how it can be used to benefit your home garden… Permaculture is a term used to describe a natural approach to the designing of our built environment and encompasses both the home and garden. Here we will briefly touch on the latter, and if you are a keen gardener it is well worth your time sourcing some further reading about Permaculture systems. Before considering any form of garden design it is important to have an understanding of your immediate environment and the local region where you live. Observation is the key. Before embarking on a garden design journey it is worth spending some time mapping out the warm, cool, wet and dry areas in your yard so that you can make sensible decisions about your plant choices and structure placements. Also have a look around the neighbourhood to see what does well. Wise plant selections are important. Indigenous and appropriate native plants are best adapted to your local

environment and require less maintenance while providing natural habitat for local wildlife species. Diverse plants with diverse relationships are desired to create a thriving ecological community. Make use of perennial plants where possible, as they require less attention than annuals. Annual plants have an important place in a Permaculture system, but confine these to vegetables, leafy greens, useful flowers and green manure crops. Various elements of a Permaculture system will have multiple functions. Carefully placed elements provide a number of uses. Whether it’s a structure or plant arrangement, consider how a particular element can serve more than one purpose. You may be able to not only provide food from a selected tree, but also seasonal shelter and shade. Other plants can help to build the soil by fixing atmospheric nitrogen or provide organic matter that can be dug into the soil or used in your compost. Recycling of resources is paramount to a functional Permaculture design. Water harvesting, grey-water reuse, kitchen and garden waste recycling are a few basic concepts that will significantly enhance your garden system. Composting used in conjunction with a productive wormfarm provides consistent quantities of organic fertilizer and soil building material. Outside inputs can be kept

to a minimum with a well functioning system. However, should you require additional materials try to source clean, unpackaged, local and preferably recycled material. Chooks are an important part of the waste recycling system in a Permaculture garden. As well as a few eggs a day, chooks will also help to keep your garden free of weeds and fallen fruit, but it is wise to design your chook systems carefully to prevent both plant and chook losses. Spring is the perfect time to introduce chooks into your backyard, so if it is something you have been thinking about for a while give it a go now. The kids will love it. So, the Permaculture approach is really a term used to describe a thoughtful, integrated and sustainable way of design. Combining food growing with sensible plantings and waste recycling will surely reduce the footprint we leave on this fragile earth.
