Chamber Made

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but there’s been a great deal of commotion going on around the Village. The Chamber of Commerce has been busy getting jobs done and it looks like things will be settling down just in time for summer and weekend visits from city dwellers. So what’s been happening? Firstly the drainage works which began in July are set to end in the second week of October. The newly laid and widened footpath at the Old Mornington Road end of Mt Eliza Way is up and running and eateries have already set up their tables and chairs ready for the warm days ahead. (This end of the Village is great for outdoor meals with the kids as it’s so close to the park). Chocolat of Mornington is now in Mt Eliza, 1001 Nights is extending their premises on Mt Eliza Way and UK Jack has had an internal refurbishment to die for. Asnew Boutique has been sold and is getting a makeover, plus Harcourts Real Estate (in Ranelagh Drive) and new home-wares store Gypsy’n’Grace (in Ranelagh Arcade)

NEW EXCITING SALON After working in award winning salons around the world, from Sydney, La and London plus managing salons in Fulham Mayfair and the exclusive Harbour Club in London, Simon Cuthleben is bringing his industry recongnised hairdressing skills to the Peninsula with team member Mikayla. With the opening of The Edge hairdressing @ Mt Eliza his vision of having a team of dedicated professional working to bring the best hairdressing to everybody is one step closer. With a mission statement “to TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

create the best hairdressing experience on the Peninsula that clients talk about it and competitors aspire too.” The Edge has moved to a new boutique salon at 3/20-22 Ranelagh Drive, Mt Eliza. have arrived. Also look out for a new Japanese Restaurant opening soon and don’t forget your frozen yoghurt from Nest inside Ritchies Village. October sees an innovative Pop up Park concept on the Village Green come alive. There will be Tai Chi lessons and drumming sessions, live music and chess board set ups. Sit back and relax with a book from the free library (supported by Mornington Peninsula Council’s ‘Literary Villages’ program) or set up a rug and have a picnic. Focussing on bringing the community together, the Pop Up Park will promote leading a healthy and culture filled lifestyle and will be a great attraction for visitors. So Mt Eliza is on the move. Now’s the time to get involved and support our community by shopping local and giving back to the businesses that support our kindergartens, schools and sports clubs. Where would our fundraising events be without the Mt Eliza traders? Where would our children get their first jobs? Where else do business owners know their regular customers by their first names? Mt Eliza Village can only flourish if we support our businesses and work together for the benefit of the whole community. This in turn will encourage new business and economic growth. The only way is up – at Mt Eliza Village!

What is Pain? Pain is a Survival Mechanism, an output from the brain - The purpose is to protect your body. When a body part is damaged, nerve endings, send a message to the brain, the brain then determines whether to send out the “owwww!!!” signal - It’s telling you there is a problem - and to FIX IT!!!! Superficial fascia surrounds your muscles. It’s a connective tissue and surrounds your whole body. Fascia is extremely flexible and strong. Within it there are more nerve endings and blood vessels than any other tissue. Pain Breeds Pain – If you leave a pain signal unheeded, the warning signals will increase in number and intensity. The brain becomes more receptive to sending out the pain response. The fascia being a connective tissue, any trauma will create dysfunction in surrounding tissue. You are more likely to feel, tingling, burning, pins and needles elsewhere and more likely you will over time, lose mobility and seriously injure yourself. Bowen Therapy interrupts the signal to your brain by resetting the nerve pathway, and releasing the fascial dysfunction. The technique is achieved by a series of moves over muscles, tendons, ligaments and the soft tissue.

As the fascial dysfunction is released, the blood starts to flow, your body is energized, the functionality of muscle and joint is returned, your posture changes. Jaw pain, neck pain, back pain, knee pain, foot pain all improve. Our aim is to get you back to full functionality, without pain as soon as possible. Bodhi Tree Therapies P: 9775 2517

You’ve heard the phrase a “winning smile” and that’s because your smile is one of your greatest assets. It can enhance your looks and confidence, helping you to make the most of your life both socially and in

your career. Our expertise, combined with recent advances in the techniques we use, allows anyone to benefit from orthodontic treatment, totally invisibly if necessary. I am privileged to come to work each day and genuinely contribute towards the process of changing the lives of my patients. Recent advances, whatever their age. Some believe braces are ‘for children only’. The truth is more and more adults are seeking orthodontic treatment. In our practice in Melbourne CBD, the majority of our patients are adults. Each patient is treated by me personally in order to give patients the high quality and personalized care they deserve. Every single patient I see is different so I always spend time listening carefully to

determine exactly what they wish to achieve and why. This time and effort enables me to customize each plan to not only achieve the desired result but also provide the treatment in such a way that it does not compromise the patients’ work and social life. Benefits of orthodontic treatment include • Good appearance and a great smile • Improved self confidence • Improvement in the appearance of teeth whether crowded or spaced • Influencing the growth of the jaws helps produce a better facial profile • Elimination of undue stresses on the jaw joints and abnormal wear of teeth Hanks Orthodontics 122 Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza T: 9787 3849 www.hanksorthodontics.com.au

Chinese Year of the Horse One of twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac, the horse is said to be energetic,

intelligent and able and Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza’s artists are paying tribute to its spirit with a ‘Year of the horse’ Exhibition during October. This exhibition will feature over fifty unique horse paintings and sculptures created by local and interstate artists. With the Mornington Peninsula being the home to a multitude of horses including race horses, indulged ponies and riding hacks of all descriptions, retired horses and loved horse pets, an exhibition dedicated to this noble animal is expected to be very well attended. For those interested, a person born in the year of the horse is thought to be: clever, kind to others, cheerful, perceptive, talented, earthy and stubborn ... is that you ? Rembrandt, Chopin and everyone’s friend, Genghis Khan were born in the Year of the Horse . The Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza ‘Year of the Horse’ Exhibition runs October 4th to 31st.

Acupuncture: A totally natural way to ease your hayfever symptoms As the flowers start to bloom, there is a feeling that life is so hopeful and lively. Conversely, we see that friends and family are starting to suffer from hayfever; sniffling, sneezing and itching. It has become their annual ritual to suffer and is due to an overreactivity of their immune systems to certain allergens in our environment, affecting the nose, eyes, lungs and sinus cavities. Lotus Family Acupuncture effectively treats many health issues, including hayfever and other respiratory complaints, digestive issues, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, depression, insomnia and pain. Lotus Family Acupuncture provides quality evidence based Chinese medicine acupuncture services and offers both symptomatic care and preventive health care with the aim to rejuvenate health for optimal well-being especially as we

approach this spring season. Acupuncture & Chinese medicine are safe and effective hayfever treatments. Chinese medicine uses acupuncture needles, cupping, massage, herbal medicine and dietary advice with great success. Most patients experience relief after 20 minutes of acupuncture. Used in conjunction with herbal

preparations, many patients achieve long lasting results. Directly after an acupuncture session you may notice: • decongested sinus region • clearer eyes • reduced sneezing • easier breathing • emotional balance and clarity Usually 6-8 hayfever treatments will help your symptoms. Acupuncture is a must to prepare for the spring and may not only relieve the symptoms but lay them to rest once and for all so that walking in a meadow of flowers or mowing the lawn are as easy as breathing. Summer is coming New look, and not a moment too soon!

You all know the influx of tourists and holiday-makers this brings to the Mornington Peninsula, and the corresponding boom for our local economy. As one of eleven councillors, I’ve been preparing by advocating for new sports fields in Mount Eliza, the development of a one-stop-shop Youth Hub in Mornington and – with the blessings of Heritage Victoria – a skate park for Mount Martha. You only need to glance at the packed skating facility at Emil Madsen Reserve as you cruise up Wooralla Drive to realise what an essential piece of infrastructure this is for our kids – to that end, we’re still negotiating the route for a 2-metre wide shared-use path so they can access the reserve safely. We’re also finalising plans for the Bay Trail, which will eventually pass through Mount Eliza along the tourist railway and connect with the Peninsula Link Trail. Thankfully, the large-scale drainage works in the village are almost completed. We’ll obviously have a bit of road-work to do to fix the patchwork quilt Mt Eliza Way has become. In the near future you should see a revamp of the village green and Rotary Park too, complimenting the great work the Rotary Club of Mount Eliza has done on the playground equipment there. Parking is the next big challenge – with so much going on in the town centre, we’ll need to formalise the current haphazard arrangements near John Butler Reserve, as well as develop a longer-term parking precinct plan. And although we do what we can, nothing beats having eyes and ears on the ground – we’d love to hear from you! And remember you have two other councillors looking after you – Bev Colomb and Anne Shaw. Send us an email to briarsward@mornpen.vic.gov. au at any time. Cheers, Andrew Dixon Briars Ward Councillor, Mornington Peninsula Shire

THE CHANGING FACE OF MT ELIZA BEAUTY After over 32 years in Mt. Eliza – Sue Verheyen of Mt. Eliza Beauty never stands still when it comes to new concepts and leading international treatments for her clients. 14 years ago, Sue introduced injectable treatments for antiageing directly with the parent company in Europe, when approached to do so, by them, as the ‘first’ Beauty Therapy Centre in Australia to work in conjunction with a doctor in this field as a trial. Restylane was introduced to her clinic – Restylane is an injectable filler, with specific formulations to aid in the reduction of facial lines

and ‘expression’ wrinkles. The rest is history. From there 5 Old Mornington Road, immersed as the leading ‘Anti-Ageing’ Clinic on the peninsula, providing services by Dr. Romero, Lara Boardman and Kay Nuttall. Treatments available in 2014 include most leading ‘brands’ of injectable therapies for not only face, but also the reduction of headaches and sweating, using products such as Botox. Community caring in real time Mt Eliza’s Community Centre has got something going on, a Real Time Learning program that offers students opportunities to engage in activities that are aligned with their interests in the wider community. Year seven and eight students at Mt Eliza Secondary College are making a difference at the Mt Eliza Village Community Centre by running the ‘Village Café’ (in a volunteering capacity) on Tuesdays. Last term over thirty-five students obtained their Food Handling Certificate and had a lot of fun while doing it. This program has been such a great success that the ‘Village Café’ will be open on Fridays as well in the near future. A big shout goes out to Heather, Lulu, Isobel, Shenae, Jaz, Jemma, Caitlyn and Cooper for all their hard work. Wednesday sees the year sevens and eights mentoring members of the community on all

Also look out for the Village and Real Time Learning to co-host an “Internet Café” which provides free one to one mentor support from the students on Fridays. Now on to Thursdays when the Secondary College’s students - Bethany, Ashcha, Bella, Jordyn, Hannah and Alexa assist with the running of the Community Centre’s Play Group. THE YOGA HOUSE

THE YOGA HOUSE IS HOME AGAIN

The yoga house is moving back to 13 Rylston Court Mt Eliza in September! The three enduring loves of my life are my husband Wayne, my daughters Helena and Maya and of course Yoga – and I can’t wait to have them all back under the one roof. We have loved every minute of our time at Lotus. Yet, I have found myself yearning to be back in our tranquil purpose built studio,

looking out at the gum trees and being close to my girls. So, we have made the decision to return The Yoga House back to where it belongs at Rylston Court. To celebrate our return home we are introducing some new classes and events, plus some great giveaways, just for you. It’s exciting times ahead at The Yoga House.

And Baby Makes Five! Mt Eliza Village Magazine congratulates Anita and James Hay (Café on the Mount and LoungeThree87) on the recent addition to their family. Kaylan Thomas Jesse Hay entered the world in August at a healthy 6lbs, 15 oz. A new brother for Jimmy and Eva. Mum and bub are doing well. TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

Grand old dame The Beleura House and Garden in Mornington takes us back to a time where life was simpler but no less aesthetically magnificent. This Heritage Trust ‘Summer House’ of the Tallis family, was left to the Victorian people after John Tallis’ death in 1996 and was opened as a house museum with all its historical artefacts (think furniture, art, books, photos and theatrical memorabilia) in November 2004. The collection represents a treasure trove of clues to how some of our peninsula forefathers lived, while the ‘Italian garden’ grounds inspire and delight. Individual and group bookings to tour this house of national significance are a must Ph: 9708 8222

when on the peninsula. Tours include tea/coffee and a light lunch. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd of October sees a romp through the forgotten world of vaudeville with a Bijou performance by Wendy Grose. This performance brings back Sir George Tallis’ sister in law Florence Young in a burlesque stage piece by the late Stephanie Daniel through sensational songs and costumes plus an afternoon tea for just $30 ($25 concession). Pure schmaltz! Great entertainment! Beleura House and Garden Ph: 5975 2027 by Liz Rogers

Some changes but still the same friendly faces Well it’s hardly a secret now, but the time has come to officially welcome a new era in the long history your local vet clinic! From humble beginnings as Mount Eliza Vet Clinic, more than 30 years ago, we underwent a massive upgrade to our facilities and have for the last 13 years been known as Peninsula Animal Hospital. Now, due to our recent merger with the equally illustrious team at Peninsula Vet Care, we are excited to reveal our latest incarnation…. Welcome Mount Eliza Veterinary Hospital! Names are important in that they ultimately define you. As P.A.H, we created a true first-class hospital facility, but with the comfortable feel of familiar faces and consistency that suits a community like ours. As Mount Eliza Animal Hospital, our goal is to stay true to these ideals, but with the new collaboration, we can truly offer a service that covers the entire Peninsula! Time has dramatically changed the way vets operate. Constant advances in technology mean that we have the ability to practice medicine at a level very close to those offered by human hospitals. However, this ability is always limited by the cost involved in upgrading equipment. As Peninsula Animal Hospital we had reached the limits of what we could do… The new entity is a true meeting of equals, and an amazing

30

Issue 34 • Spring/Summer 2014

opportunity to improve our standards of care. This collaboration is unlike others in that despite some cosmetic changes, all of the hospitals within the group maintain the individuality that makes them the ones you choose to look after the health of your best friends. The benefits are immediate. With little change to our daily operation, and the same friendly faces, we continue to perform with the competence, compassion and quality you have come to rely on. However, as part of Peninsula Vet Care, we gain the wealth of experience and diversity of a larger but equally devoted team. To you, this means an immediate improvement in availability, collaboration between vets with a wide range of special skills and interests, and immediate expansion of our after-hours service. Each hospital in the group runs Ph: 9708 8222

independently, as befits their locality, but now no matter where you are on the Peninsula, you can rely on the same level of care that you are used to with us. Already we have a staffed after hoursservice open until 11pm every day of the year, and plans to improve this further. With 20+ vets, we have almost all special interest areas covered. Collaboration between surgeons, means that even for the most difficult cases we have you covered. Everyone amongst the new group at Peninsula Vet Care has the goal of providing a complete service and the best possible care for you and your pet. Planning is already underway to increase our capabilities further and we look forward to bringing you the latest news as these ideas take shape! in need and strongly believe in the Rotary motto ‘Service above self’ Here in the Village, the Rotary Club of Mount Eliza has for the past 43 years played a very active and integral part in community life. The club’s members work voluntarily and enthusiastically to raise funds through variety of events such as the Farmers Market, sausage sizzles, giant garage sales, bonanzas and raffles. Every dollar raised goes directly into Rotary-supported community projects, some in recent times being: • Purchasing equipment for a Fitness Trail at the Howard Parker Reserve. • Briefing teenagers at schools in Mount Eliza on career opportunities, job applications and interviewing techniques. • Making a significant donation to Riding For The Disabled to help purchase a horse. • Promoting Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in Mount Eliza. This year the club hopes to gain Council approval to build a rotunda in Rotary Park, Mount Eliza and plans are also underway to develop a new satellite Rotary club here to attract the younger people. Rotary Club of Mount Eliza currently has over 50 male and female members. It holds a dinner meeting every Tuesday at Toorak College and warmly welcomes anyone interested in joining the club. Fighting ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ at Minimbah For many parents, our favourite childhood memories are of outdoor exploration – climbing up trees and down gullies, crawling through the bush and building cubbies. Often, it’s how we grew up. Many of us also lament the fact that our children don’t have these opportunities – we mourn that safety concerns, perceived and real, have torpedoed these impromptu learning experiences where independence, resilience, leadership and communication skills flourish. In response to this, and influenced by the Forest Schools’ approach used in many Scandinavian countries, the Early Childhood Centre at Woodleigh School has established their own Nature Program. Every Thursday, the 4 Year Old ECC students from Minimbah spend their day outdoors at the Minimbah Creek. Rain, hail or shine,

ECC students engage in those activities their mums and dads did, and the learning outcomes are remarkable. Twenty months in and we are seeing the 4 Year Olds developing resilience, and persisting with challenging tasks. To see students take pride in their achievements, having overcome set, or stumbled-upon challenges, is brilliant. Leaders appear, supporting and organising fellow students. Turns are taken, problems identified, discussed, and ultimately, solved. Social, spatial, skills in judgment – the educational benefits are many, varied and importantly, interwoven. This time outdoors, truly has something for every child. Such has been the success of the Creek Program at 4YO ECC and Foundation (Prep) levels that Year 1 and 2 students now spend their Wednesdays outside the classroom. Their ‘Discovery Day’ program sets a different

learning and curriculum focus each term and draws on students’ ‘discoveries’ at Frankston beach and along the Sweetwater Creek trail to further in-class discussion and understandings. For more information on Woodleigh School’s early years outdoor learning programs, contact Rod Davies – Head of Junior Campus Minimbah on 9788 6488. Woodleigh ECC and Foundation students visit the school’s wildlife reserve at Senior Campus as part of their outdoor learning program.

Penbank School’s Paul Thompson takes international award for Between the Bays Festival

TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

Paul Thompson, Director of Enrolments and Development at Penbank School, has taken home the award for the Best Event at the Educate Plus Awards for Excellence at Melbourne’s Crown Casino. The award recognises Paul’s work in developing Between the Bays Music Festival, held annually at Penbank School, into the successful event it has become. Paul says his work in developing Between the Bays Festival over the past 9 years has been an enjoyable experience. This award highlights the importance of community events on the Mornington Peninsula. ‘It was a real pat on the back, not only for me, but also for our school. We were nominated against much larger schools with huge budgets and loads of resources. It just proves that we are a small school with very big ideas.’ Between the Bays Festival is Penbank School’s major fundraiser. All money raised goes towards the schools partnership with the Wugularr School in Beswick, remote Northern Territory. ‘Our incredible friendship with the community of Beswick and its people, is very important to me. Helping the children at the Wugularr School reach their full potential is one of our schools main priorities. I urge all residents on the Mornington Peninsula to come along to Between the Bays Festival next year, knowing you are supporting a very worthy cause’. Becoming

ME at Peninsula by Liz Rogers Belonging. This is paramount to securing a strong sense of self in this ever changing and challenging world. The Peninsula School recognises this and has developed a Positive Education process whereby each student can become the best they can be. The Becoming Me Program for Years 5 through 8 at The Peninsula School has been designed with the focus on belonging and graduated transition. It nurtures and supports girls and boys in these middle years by creating a bridge from primary to secondary school through specifically devised programs to grow independence and resilience. Outdoor Education programs build self-confidence, empathy and survival skills. The Creative Arts through the Middle School Production and Junior School Musical foster collaborative and creative skills, while the co-curricular program challenges students to try new activities and to push themselves to their limits. Movement from concrete to abstract thinking processes requires a rich and challenging environment. The

Master Class

Mt Eliza local John Foley is 77 years young and loves to paint, especially in the Renaissance, Baroque and Art Deco traditions. He never creates an original work believing he ‘doesn’t have the talent for that’, but reproduces the masters in such fine detail that he gives great pleasure to many who view them. You’ve probably seen them hanging in Vinnies Pizza Boys and if you haven’t, go take a look. ‘I like to work in the early hours of the morning when it’s quiet’, says John who signs his work under the name Giovanni. ‘I’ve been painting since I was twelve. I used to paint ships having spent much of my life at sea, but now I reproduce the work I admire most’, he goes on. And others admire them too. Beverly Lord, who is restoring Ashburnham House in Frankston, has hung thirty-six of them inside. John will continue to paint until he can’t. He’s working on three big pieces at the moment. Proof in the pudding that you’re never too old for anything you love doing. BY LIZ ROGERS • Pictured owner of Vinn ies Pizza Boys, Tony, in front of one of John Foley’s works.

Pizza Boys bring the freshest and best The Boys (and girls) are back in town! Vinnies seafood to Mt Eliza. This family owned modern cuisine

restaurant (and famous pizza bar) has a different fish on the menu most days and promotes local and seasonal produce so you know it’s got to be good. (Think South Gippsland eye or lamb fillet and veal that brings diners from Brighton and beyond.) They are also the experts when it comes to a tiramisu and gelato. With seating for fifty inside, Vinnies restaurant now caters for outside dining as well. The atmosphere is definitely Mediterranean. Bi fold windows open up to the street where indoor/outdoor becomes one. They are licensed (BYO Wine) and also have a private function room where the menu can be adapted for smorgasbord or individual dining. Nothing is too much to ask at this Mt Eliza favourite. So come on inside. The boys (and girls) are ready. Vinnies Pizza Boys Pizza Bar and Restaurant Open seven nights a week from 5pm 57 Mt Eliza Way 9787 4111 http://www.vinniesmounteliza.com.au/
