GARY LOVES OUR PENINSULA Melissa Hodge interviews MasterChef Australia co-judge, Gary Mehigan, on his latest book and love affair with the Mornington Peninsula . . . Gary Mehigan lives and breathes food and is one of the most lovable judges on the popular series MasterChef Australia. With an infectious smile and joie de vivre, it was a natural progression for Gary to write his latest cookbook, ‘Favourites’. Luckily for us, Gary will be launching his book on our Peninsula at Merricks General Store on Wednesday July 23rd. “I love the Mornington Peninsula, particularly Red Hill and Flinders,” says Gary. “I often dream of living down here, it would be one of my favourite places in Australia . . . maybe one day?” Apart from the scenery, Gary’s love of the Peninsula stems from the amazing produce. “Red Hill Cheese, wines from 10 Minutes by Tractor, T’Gallant, plums, cherries, and soft fruits like strawberries and raspberries would

be at the top of the list of my favourites on the Peninsula,” says Gary. “Many of our baby vegetables and herbs are sourced from the Mornington Peninsula for the restaurants too.” With a unique microclimate the lush green around Red Hill, the rugged charm of Westernport Bay and soft sand and blue water of Port Phillip Bay, Gary can’t think of anywhere that compares. “I love driving down for lunch at DOC in Mornington, dropping in to Red Hill Estate for tasting, pick strawberries at Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm and then walk the beach or go for a swim at Dromana,” says Gary who embraces life and all it has to offer. Always willing to learn and evolve, the chef who has been in the industry for 30 years says being on MasterChef has inspired his own creativity. “I’ve been a chef for close to 30 years now and a restaurateur for 15 years. has given me the pleasure of being able to experience food from a different perspective; our contestants have been amazingly creative, they often think differently to professional chefs, which is refreshing, and in many ways inspiring. Trial and error often produces surprising results,” says Gary. “Meeting and getting to know many of the best chefs in the world as well as Australia has been a real privilege. Heston, Rene Redzepi, Thomas Keller, Marco Pierre White the list goes on. Lucky aren’t I. . .?” While Gary is coming to Merricks to launch his book, he is also familiar with the Peninsula from last season’s MasterChef when they had a Peninsula challenge. “We had a big challenge last season that had our contestants racing around all over the Peninsula, milking a goat, making an omelette

at Green Olive to name a few, it was a fantastic challenge. We also held MasterClass this series at T’Gallant, personally I couldn’t think of a more perfect backdrop. More to come I hope. There is certainly plenty to do and plenty to see,” says Gary. As for Gary’s latest book venture, he says ‘Favourites’ has been an absolute pleasure to write and test. “To be honest it has been very easy to compile. The hard bit was cutting down the number of recipes I wanted to put in the book. I have so many ‘favourites’ of course and the nice bit for me is I like eating everything,” he says with a laugh. From Lonely Planet to Destination Wheeler Tony Wheeler looks like a regular Joe sauntering into the Wheeler Centre’s darkly seductive café Moat in Little Lonsdale for our catch up coffee and cake. ‘I use it as my office when in Melbourne’, says Tony. There’s no fanfare for the guy who has just been appointed (along with his wife Maureen) an Officer of the Order of Australia which is awarded for distinguished service to Australia and/or humanity. (We both had to look up AO to see what it meant!) Tony is chuffed by the recognition that comes directly from the community. ‘If it was just about throwing money around then it wouldn’t mean so much, but because the award reflects what Lonely Planet did with its travel guides – by that I mean create understanding – it’s a great thing’. ‘Not all those who wander are lost’, wrote J.R.R.Tolkien, and although Tony can’t always remember when he was somewhere, he can remember why. We agree that time line confusion may be a side effect of incessant travel, as too are the deep grooves of life spanning across his still boyish face. ‘I’ve always loved maps and globes. My father worked for British Airways so I travelled a lot – although you never really travel until you go it alone. My first trip to America and Montreal cemented my fate’. After completing an engineering degree from Warwick University and a MBA from London Business School, this Brit and his then new Northern Irish bride embarked on a trip through Asia – a journey that would change the course of their lives. It was 1972. Lonely Planet’s first guide Across Asia on the Cheap was written at home; was staple bound and sold out. Tony returned to Asia a year later to write South-East Asia on a Shoestring and the rest is – what was. By the time the Wheelers sold Lonely Planet in 2007 to BBC World Wide it was a Super Brand which had published over 500 titles and been translated into more than eight languages. In the early days Tony and Maureen were constant companions. They settled in Australia in the seventies and much travelling was done with their two children

Tashie (who now over sees Planet Wheeler, a foundation that funds fifty plus projects in the developing world with the focus on alleviating poverty) and film maker son Kieran. These days there are more solo sojourns and plenty of philanthropic pursuits to keep them moving. Opera aficionado Maureen is the Melbourne Ring Cycle Artist Patron (think Wagner), and Tony is on the board of the Global Heritage Fund which aims to ensure the preservation of global heritage sites. He’s also working on a couple of books. He says he writes ‘whenever I can’. His most recent travel book Dark Lands (not guide - he hasn’t written one of those for ten years) is published by Lonely Planet and sees him stoned (with rocks) in Palestine, arrested in the Congo and getting done for speeding in Zimbabwe, although he swears he has never felt unsafe while on the road. Of course he can travel ‘up front’ these days and there are no more ‘battered suitcases piled on the sidewalk’ as Kerouac expels. The next few months of Tony’s life are a blur of business talks and you guessed it, travel. (June 19th saw him at the Frankston Arts Centre as part of Frankston City Council’s Business Breakfast Series). He’ll be back in Melbourne in August for the Writers Festival after finding his way to and from San Jose. Add this to his connection with Text Publishing and the success of The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion (2014’s Book of the Year) and you see he’s got the Midas touch. Oh, and of course we are sitting in the Wheeler Centre which opened in 2010 with the Wheeler’s support. It is Melbourne’s literary hub for fostering ideas, writing and conversation. So what does Mr Wheeler read in his spare time? Travel Books! He also digs Lotuses and electric cars. ‘There is some luck and timing involved in creating successes’, he ponders over his flat white - unassuming he may be, but this man is anything but regular. Go to http://www.frankston.vic.gov.au/Business/FMP_ Business_Breakfast_Series for more information on the Business Breakfast Series. Liz Rogers

Game changer We all know that out of control things happen. Life takes its turns whether we are up for them or not. But what if one day you’re travelling along nicely, your future mapped out with visions of musical theatre performances in Australia and New York and years of dancing your way through life, then quite suddenly, the vision becomes dark and almost impossible to see at all? Enter stage left local Peninsula boy Zac Pomeroy who at the tender age of twenty one is living this reality. It was only half way through the first semester of his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (specialising in musical theatre) at The Victorian College of the Arts that Zac’s dream of living a performer’s life began to resemble more of a nightmare. The joke was on him and it wasn’t funny. He talks: ‘I was so excited when I got accepted into VCA. I only began dancing at fifteen’ (although he had been keen on music since he was six years old) ‘and wanted it so badly. But then it began - this niggling pain in both of my legs from the knees down, but hey, dancers get pains in their legs don’t they?’ The problem was the pain progressed to a point where he

Whats News at

couldn’t perform certain jumps and tricks in class or walk normally when the lesson was done. This led him to the school’s physiotherapist. ‘They couldn’t work it out, so I was sent on a round of tests only to find I had some very rare and difficult to treat condition’. Bilateral Functional Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome and its side kick Bilateral Anterior and Deep Posterior Chronic Exhertional Compartment Syndrome are what Zac is talking about. Put in layman’s terms, he’s standing ability is now less than two minutes and he can’t walk more than one hundred metres without being in agony. Gone are the days of hanging out with friends, holding down a job or even getting a full night’s sleep. ‘My leg muscles are so big that each time I stand/walk, they press against the popliteal artery and veins. This means that only miniscule amounts of blood and oxygen can get to my lower legs and feet. It’s constantly agonising’ and that means he’s in hospital regularly for pain management. (The doctors are now looking to insert a spinal cord stimulator which exerts pulsed electrical signals to the spinal cord to control chronic pain). ‘I’ve had five surgeries already. I can’t look after myself and am scarred for life’. This has been going on for two years. There is however a ray of light shining

front of house, although it is a very expensive one. Richmond based Vascular Surgeon Dr William Campbell believes he may be able to operate. ‘The problem is it’s going to cost $30,000 - $15,000 per leg’, and that’s where you, dear reader, come in. Zac and his family are trying to raise money for this possibly life changing operation. If you would like to help go to his Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/fundraising4zacpomeroy or directly deposit a donation into Zachary Pomeroy, Commonwealth Bank, BSB: 063539, Acc.No: 1054 1395. Horseback Winery Tours launches multi-million dollar tourism facility Mornington Peninsula’s premier trail ride provider, Horseback Winery Tours, launched a state of the art tourism facility at its Red Hill headquarters in June following a two year multi-million dollar makeover. The $8 million dollar investment will see Horseback Winery Tours raise the bar for Australian trail rides and provide visitors with a truly unique way to experience all that the highly regarded wine region has to offer via horseback. Partnering with the best wineries and attractions in the area including T’Gallant, Mantons Creek Estate, and the Peninsula Hot Springs, Horseback Winery Tours offers a range of packages starting from $160 designed to deliver the ultimate Peninsula experience. Chairman of Horseback Winery Tours, Grant Griffiths, could not be happier with the world-class facility and is proud to be a part of driving tourism in Victoria. “We have always been dedicated to showcasing the very best of the Mornington Peninsula to our visitors, and believe we are now more equipped to provide the best service in the industry – I’m extremely proud of what we have created,” said Griffiths. “The launch also has special significance for me as the curtain is now raised on my own vineyard, Frog Hollow Estate, in celebration of its first ever harvest,” he added. Considered the most popular tourist attraction in Red Hill, Horseback Winery Tours demonstrates daily the local wine produce on sale across their impressive list of winery partners. A range of different tours are available to suit all capabilities, with selected packages also incorporating the Peninsula’s best in accommodation and fine dining for those who want that little bit extra. Jessica Martini brings it home

At 26 years young, pageant veteran Jessica Martini took home the Miss Galaxy Australia crown at the national finals, on the Gold Coast, in April. Judges on the night included, Bindi and Terri Irwin from Australia Zoo, Rochelle from The Bachelor Australia, last year’s crowned winners and Danni Johnston who is a finalist in the Miss Universe competition. Jessica will now head to the US for the International Miss Galaxy finals in August. This will be Jessica’s final shot at winning an international crown. Jessica was also a Miss World finalist. “With all pageants, there is only one girl who gets crowned. They all represent Australia, on parade, on an international platform so they are similar in a way, but they have different titles. Pageants are pretty much all about sponsorship and business.” These days it is common to see pageant entrants dressed in the same shoes, dresses and swimwear, largely via sponsors providing various goods and apparel. “This puts us all on the same level playing field,” said

Jessica “So you, as a person, have to shine through.” Jessica will now compete against an international array of entrants. “I’ve got to broaden my thinking. I’m not just competing against girls from different states now, it’s different countries. I’m doing extra training on how I walk and how I present myself onstage. You can also get extra points by getting out into the community and promoting yourself and the pageant as well.” “You have to make sure that you are looking after yourself too, getting enough sleep and eating properly so that you’re physically and mentally well, so you can take on anything.” Jessica is an ambassador for Pink Ribbon Day and has an upcoming fashion show, Catwalk for a Cause, at Morning Star Estate, Mt Eliza at 6.30pm, Saturday, July 12 with proceeds aiding breast cancer research. Jessica is sponsored by Martini Runway, Juliet Bridal in Mornington and Shells Beauty Salon in Dromana. Australia Galaxy Pageants’ headline sponsor is Ebony and Ivory Hair and Beauty. BELLYDANCING BIKERS HIT THE STREETS

Who would’ve thought that belly dancing and bike riding go hand in hand but they do as peninsula ladies Victoria Trevaskus and Lucy Perkins prove. The Mt Eliza duo has combined their talents to enter into the Ride to Conquer Cancer with their unforgettable team, Belly dance Bikers. Victoria and Lucy will do the 200 km ride in their belly dancing costumes, and are currently raising funds to enter the ride. “On Friday August 1st from 7pm till 9pm, we have an event called ‘Ladies Rocking the Kasbah’ at the Mt Eliza Community Centre, involving belly dancing, market stalls, massage therapy, tarot card readers and ballroom dancing,” says Victoria. “We need to raise $5000 between the two of us and we are already half way there.” For Victoria the decision to do the ride is really her life coming full circle as she first started belly dancing after going to a fundraiser for breast cancer which was a belly dancing class. “I immediately felt a connection with belly dancing and decided to start teaching first in Mordialloc and then with Shimmy By The Bay on the peninsula,” says Victoria, whose husband has been touched by cancer. Another challenge for the best friends is their lack of road biking experience. “We are both keen mountain bikers so riding on the road has turned out to be a bit of a challenge,” says Victoria with a laugh. “Not to mention the logistics of how to ride with belly dancing scarves.” So next time you’re driving along, don’t be surprised by a flash of colourful hip scarves, sequins and glitter riding up beside you on a mountain bike. It’s just two local girls trying to make a difference. Paul Mercurio opening Merc’s Bier Café in Main St Movie star, celebrity chef, television host, author, motor bike rider and Mornington resident Paul Mercurio is a part of the partnership that is converting the former Gloria Jean’s coffee shop into a beaut spot for a beer and a taste of Italia. “The vision is to create a ‘bier cafe’,” said Paul as we chatted in a nearby coffee shop. “The brains behind getting the location was my partner John Dowber’s idea, and he was thinking of something like a wine bar. He gave me a call and I went and had a look and he said ‘Do you want to do the food?’. I said ‘yes’, but do you know that there’s four or five wine bars opening in Mornington soon?” “Next, I said that I’ve always wanted to do a beer cafe. In France they call a beer cafe a brasserie. It’s a place to go and have good beer, good food and good wine. But it’s a cafe; not a restaurant and not a pub. “John and his partner Meg were pretty excited about the idea. We’re not a ‘boutique’ beer bar, but we’ll have nice beers on the menu and six beers on tap.” Along with some fine wines and specialty spirits. Paul will also brew some beer, so that ‘Merc’s Bier Cafe’ additionally has its own label. Merc’s brew is likely to be made locally. The focus will be on crafted brews and distillations. The food will be crafted too. “We’re putting a smoker in. I’ve been smoking my own meats since 2004,” said Paul. “I love smoked products and I’ve been smoking some wagyu brisket. I did some filming on the farm where it’s grown. I’ve been buying it and using it. It’s very rich and the-taste-is-just-Oh.” “I enhance it with a dry rub of herbs and sugars. You can taste the crushed bay leaves, pepper and paprika. So once the dry rub is on you cold smoke it for 14 hours and if you pick it up, it will fall apart. We will probably pull it and serve it on a round wooden board. It’s succulent, tender and full of flavour.” “No one else in Mornington is smoking their meats, so we will have the beautiful brisket, pork and ribs done that way.” “On the other side we will also have food that’s very much related to enjoying with a good beer or a nice glass of wine. “We’re not really trying to follow the trend, but the way I like to eat, especially when I’m with friends, is to get a bunch of

JULY 2014 (33)

foods together and share.” So plenty of tapas-style dishes will feature. “A lot of people love that, so if someone wants to pop in for a beer and some wings or a cassoulet or a small bowl of mussels, you could do that for maybe twenty bucks.” Dishes that should go well with groups will include smoked olives with parmesan cheese, croquettes, stuffed Spanish pickles with chorizo , a side of ribs, nice slaw and kale salad. Dessert ideas include sticky date pudding with beer caramel sauce. Paul’s own chocolate-chilli ice cream is also a contender. Paul is already the author of a couple of books, including the title Cooking with Beer. “So I’ve long wanted a beer cafe where many of those recipes are used. I love to make beer batter and beer mussels and in winter, probably a beer soup.” “As much as possible we will go with local produce, but at the same time I’m focusing on a style of food that matches a beer or wine or a style of eating. “Having said all that, I know I’ve got a lot to learn. I’ve never run a place like this. I won’t be the head chef, I will be working the floor and I hope to work the stoves but I’ll need a head chef and a sous chef to bring the vision out. “I’ve got some chef-friends locally, and I’ve got some pretty good chef-contacts on the internet. I’ve got a bit of a strategy for finding the right chefs.” “The thing is that the menus are already ‘written’, it is my food and I think that people will come to Merc’s Bier Cafe because they want the experience. It will be theatre and it will be fun.” Merc’s Bier Cafe is expected to open in July-August. read online www.mpmag.com.au

Opening a world of possibilities

Where futures begin...

Kathleen Rumph knew of the importance of educating and empowering young women to serve and shape their world. She was an enthusiastic and unforgettable teacher who taught at Toorak College from 1971 until 1993. In memoriam the Kathleen Rumph Scholarship has been established to provide a transformative education for a student whose own family is not in the position to provide a Toorak College education.

AdPlace 352TC

Kathleen began her career at Toorak College as a senior English teacher, became Year 12 Level Co-ordinator and then Deputy Principal. She was a member of the School Board, and was involved in many of the policies introduced including the pastoral care system. Kathleen was a ‘people person’, she was interested in everyone and made herself available all hours of the day and night. She loved teaching and regarded her work as one of the most rewarding parts of her life. She touched many students’ lives as their teacher, mentor and role model. She had a great sense of humour and an enormous enthusiasm for all aspects of school life, in the classroom or co-curricular activities. She enjoyed the school exhibitions, House and interschool activities and would support her House and school with great vigour. Kathleen was an honorary Toorak Collegian and maintained a friendship with staff and past students. A former student was so positively influenced by Kathleen that she has generously donated to the Toorak College Scholarship Fund, making it possible to offer a new scholarship. The Kathleen Rumph Scholarship will be offered for the first time to a new Year 7 student for entry in 2015. This scholarship will make a Toorak College education a reality for a deserving student. The student’s overall desire for the opportunity to learn in the Toorak College environment is the primary factor behind this award. The Kathleen Rumph Scholarship supports tuition fees from Year 7 entry for the duration of the student’s secondary education. Applications close: 9 August, 2014. Scholarship testing: 16 August, 2014. For details please visit the website: www.toorakcollege.vic.edu.au, or contact the Enrolments Office on 9788 7234 or enrolments@toorakc. vic.edu.au

Jared Lechte Pre-Owned Manager Mornington Mercedes-Benz Jared Lechte, the Pre-owned Manager at the shining new Mornington Mercedes-Benz dealership and extensive car showroom, grew up on the Peninsula and now lives in Mornington.

If Jared could take home any of the dynamic Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the dealership, his pick would be a sturdy ML Wagon, with his boat in tow. A musician and fisherman at heart, Jared has worked with industrywide brands including Nissan, Chrysler, Jeep and Suzuki. “When you buy a new car it’s a good feeling” says Jared “But when you get a Mercedes-Benz, it’s something else.” Jared explains that there’s a certain thrill to purchasing one of their cars, a wow-factor. “It’s a very big experience, from browsing the sleek vehicles to driving away with everything you wished for. Through seamless transactions that cater to our customer’s every need, Mercedes-Benz make sure the customer drives out knowing everything about the car that they do”. Mercedes-Benz Australia has rated the Mornington pre-owned facility as being the best in the country. Being the Pre-owned Manager, Jared’s job is finding the right stock, that’s as good as a new car, but doesn’t cost nearly as much. It’s not easy, he says, but it’s essential to fulfil the wow-factor that comes with this experience, and it’s worth it to see the joy people get when picking up their dream car. Mercedes-Benz Mornington boasts the Peninsula’s largest pre-owned prestige vehicle display; “These cars are only 12-18 months old and come directly from Mercedes-Benz. We cater for every style of Benz-lover by pricing these vehicles at considerably less than the new car equivalent” said Jared. Jared’s mission is to make it affordable for anybody to have experience of buying and owning a Mercedes-Benz. He mentions that people come in and say, “I just want one of these one day” and it’s his job to fulfil the dream. Prices range from $15K. Mercedes Benz Mornington is at 29 Mornington-Tyabb Road, Mornington. Phone: 5973 9688.

Dress up for Masquerade Ball

Free To Shine is a humanitarian organisation founded in Australia who work in collaboration with communities and local governments in Cambodia so that girls can reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world. Their funding comes from individuals, businesses and foundations who believe children should be in schools, not brothels. To enrol more girls into their scholarship program, Free To Shine are hosting their first ever Masquerade Ball on the Peninsula on Saturday August 16 at 115 Café, 115 Main Street Mornington commencing at 7.30pm. It will be an enchanting evening with live music, finger foods, complimentary drinks and a little masked mischief. The Masquerade Ball is an opportunity to bring the people of the Mornington Peninsula together for a fun night for a great cause. The team in Cambodia works in 15 rural villages with girls who were previously at risk of being targeted by sex traffickers. Now these girls are safe in

school. Free To Shine have assisted 176 girls to date and hope to be able to enroll a further 16 girls as a result of the support received from the Masquerade Ball. Nicky Mih CEO of Free TO Shine stated “This is a great opportunity for people on the Mornington Peninsula to share a fun evening with all the proceeds going to enrol more girls into Free To Shine’s scholarship program.” The entertainment will include some of Melbourne’s premier blues and jazz musicians, coming together for a one night only musical extravaganza. Matt Dwyer, Andrea Marr, Robb Papp, and Diddy Reyes will be performing on the night, which will also include a DJ, a live auction, prizes, plus much more. All the artists playing on the night are donating their services free of charge. For more information please visit the website www. freetoshine.org. Owner Michael Savage was delighted with the recognition saying “In the past 3 years, we’ve transformed the business from maze and garden attraction into a thriving adventure park that offers a full day of healthy outdoor activities for families. Our Annual Pass Memberships have grown by 300% in the past 12 months and that tells us that our customers are extremely happy with our park and the services we provide”. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Crown Palladium Ballroom on July 7th, just as this publication comes out. We wish Michael and the team every success. Alyce registered a trivia night event at the Frankston Dolphins Football club and received donations from Mornington Peninsula businesses for the raffle and prizes. Alyce met many amazing families and people who have some very sad stories of the affects of cancer, there were also some inspirational ones. The night turned out to be extremely successful with over 100 people attending and raising a fantastic sum of almost $2,500! Alyce would like to thank all those who participated in making the night a success. Morven Manor Retirement Village, history on our doorstep Nestled among 100 year old Norfolk Pines, native bushland and lush gardens, Morven Manor is a warm and friendly retirement village with the beautiful Manor House built in 1888 as the focal point. Conveniently situated close to Mornington’s Main Street and a short stroll to the beach, Morven Manor is the perfect location to live and enjoy the vibrant lifestyle that Mornington has to offer. The retirement home units are designed and maintained to offer privacy and quality without compromise, with plenty of space for treasured possessions and guests alike. Our 24-hour monitored emergency call system ensures security and peace of mind. Morven Manor’s History The house “Morven” was built in 1888 by Archibald Cook, owner

Thomas Telford who restored the house and turned it into a luxurious reception centre. Re-named “Morven Manor”, the centre was officially opened on 7 September 1971 by Dame Mabel Brookes. In 1980, Morven Manor was purchased by Mr and Mrs Colin Johnston and construction of one of the first retirement villages in Victoria was commenced. Completed in 1987, Morven Manor Retirement Village now uses the Manor House as a community centre for the residents. The Johnston family located and re-installed original features of the Manor House, such as the horse-head hitching posts at the front of the Manor and the brass chandelier in the main lounge. They also restored the woodwork in the foyer. The Manor House is now the main feature of this beautiful retirement village. (pictured above) Ella Cook, outside Morven Manor, in Tanti Ave

of the Victoria Ferry Service over the Yarra. The house was a gift for his son William Sym Cook on the occasion of his marriage to Ella Louise Allchin of “Sutton Grange”, another pioneer Mornington family. The young couple were enthusiastic gardeners and converted their five acre block into parkland famous for its collection of Australian shrubs and plants including the Norfolk Pines which stand in front of the house and are still a prominent landmark today. The Cooks lived at Mornington for nearly 50 years and had no children. So upon their deaths left the house to a niece, May Allchin, whom they had brought up. In 1951 Morven was purchased by the Brotherhood of St. Laurence who used the house as a holiday home for elderly people in need of a change. In March 1970, Morven was purchased by Mr and Mrs

JULY FISHING PAUL WORSTELING’S

MORNINGTON

MORNINGTON PENINSULA:

We have certainly seen some wild and wooly weather recently but the fishing has still been excellent. The numbers of calamari around the peninsula have been out of control and with most rock walls and jetties producing a lot of squid. The average size will continue to grow as we get closer to spring so don’t be afraid to up your jig size to 3.0 and above. Red foils and white jigs have been the favoured colours. There has also been a few winter whiting being taken from around Portsea and Blairgowrie so it’s well worth a shot putting a pipi or squid strip down amongst the moorings on the calmer winter afternoons.

Westernport is where the action has been red hot. The calamari are over sized up on the Tyabb Bank and Middle Spit with size 3.0 jigs and bigger being the best bet. Red and Gold foils the best colours. The crazy run of winter snapper is still in full swing with fish to 6kg being a regular capture from Bouchier Channel and Crawfish Rock. There was also a massive 9.2kg snapper taken in 30m of water in the western entrance. Fresh squid by far the best bait. Some really nice gummies starting to appear as well with fish to 15kg caught out of Hastings.

OUT OF TOWN:

Lake Toolondo has seen some crazy trout fishing on both lures and mud eyes with fishing going as big as 10lb! Bigger lures are taking the bigger fish, Daiwa Double Clutch and Strada Blackheart are worth a go. Some big Chinook Salmon are also being taken on the troll at Bullen Merri. For the full MASSIVE fishing report log onto www.ifish.com.au. You can also text your fishing reports to our reports hotline on 0427 693 759. Keep the reports coming and head on down to Tackle World Mornington to say Hi! Team Tackle World Mornington.

MT ELIZA’S SMART DRONES HAVE ARRIVED

Smart drones – now integrating with business!

The Mornington Peninsula welcomes another new company, with Drone Films opening its business operations in Mt Eliza. This innovative small business brings with it state-of-the-art technologies, which in this case are smart drones used for aerial filming, surveying and photography. With CASA endorsement, Drone Films has the backing of Federal legislation with strict controls to ensure privacy and safe operations. Chief Executive, Chris Hilton-Wood of Mt Eliza, is proud to be associated with the computer-operated drones that are programmable and said, “Drone Films prides itself in the fact that it is our precision flight and filming that makes the difference between an average shoot and something exceptional.” When drones are aloft, contact from a ‘ground control centre’ enables both flight control and real-time camera views of the landscape and events below, with the advantage that clients can gain a first-person-view and decide on what they wish to include for their project. Mr Hilton-Wood noted, “Typically, real estate and winery owners can direct the type of shoots that they believe enhance the uniqueness and marketability of their properties.” Mr Hilton-Wood, himself a pilot with 30 years’ experience, has seen this technology providing views he has always enjoyed from aloft and noted, “Land and coastal planners are now starting to use drone technology to assist in making their planning tasks much easier. With film footage easily and quickly provided for meetings, discussion can very quick focus on issues that would otherwise be missed.” He said other applications include survey, traffic control, shopping centre planning,

wetlands and ecological studies of bird flights, factory logistics, traffic on-off ramps to freeway updates and bus interchange planning. Typically, the Drone Films team employs the following steps for a shoot: an agreed brief and time lines, reconnaissance of location, obtaining air traffic clearance, shooting the mission for high density video or high quality photography and client real-time adjustments and approval. Editing of film footage is undertaken if desired and outputs can be on the web in no time. Planners, ecologists, foresters, coastal erosion records and measurements can now be done with speed and accuracy, with uploaded data available within minutes of a shoot. Drone Films has an experienced team of professionals waiting to edit film shoots to match client needs. Mr Hilton-Wood mused that people could plan to use drone platforms for weddings, outdoor graduations, golf course flyovers, gala and fun days, adding that the range of drone applications is about as broad as the human imagination! YOU’RE GOING TO BE A NANA When you first hear those words “You’re going to be a grandma” come out of your child’s mouth, two things cross your mind – “How exciting for my daughter” and then “I’m too young. I’m not ready for this title. I’ve only just stopped having children myself.” But like John Lennon said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”, and soon this precious angel comes into your life and you embrace the new phase of nanahood! Like any new journey, becoming a grandparent is fraught with questions. After all we only know how to have our own children, how to nurture them, feed them and protect them. So how does a grandparent act? What is our role? Where do we fit into the raising of this precious child? My nana had grey hair in a bun. She walked around wearing a pinny. She crocheted rugs and beanies and things. I can’t even sew. She baked cakes and slices and put them in a basket to bring to our house. She smelt like cleaning bleach and 4711 Eau de cologne, and she always had a crystal jar full of lollies on the mantle piece when we came over.

I suspect, like parenthood, being a nana is going to be a trial and error thing. I figure many first time grandparents ask the same questions. Local author, June Loves, thought the same and has just published her book, ‘Modern Grandparenting’. A grandparent and great grandparent herself, Love’s book offers helpful advice on a wealth of issues that grandparents face. It’s like a survival guide to grandparenting, with everyday tips on how to entertain them at each age level, games to play, cubbies to build, and even your role as a grandparent. My particular favourite is the chapter titled ‘Grandparenting 101’. As a relative newby to the game, (my granddaughter is just 18 days old), it’s great to read about the different roles you can play, and all the adventures to look forward to. She explains that grandparenting can be joyous but it can also be tricky, challenging and frequently chaotic. Sounds just like parenting to me! In the meantime, I think being a grandparent might be just like being a mum. You have to take it one day at a time, enjoy as many cuddles as you can, be there to support your

own child, and every now and again sit back and absorb how blessed you are to watch another precious life come into this world. Melissa Hodge

AND BABY MAKES FIVE!! If you know Mt Eliza you will have heard of Café on the Mount, and Lounge Three87, but what you may not know is they are run by mumpreneur, Anita Hay. “I started my cafe business ‘Cafe on the Mount’ in 2009, when my son was two years old and my baby girl six months,” says Anita. “I felt that although being a mum was absolutely full time work with hardly a break, my mind was incredibly restless. My husband and brother gave me the push to take the plunge into owning and running my own business. “Sleeping for a couple of hours and then waking to breastfeed baby and run payroll, going to work on only a couple of hours sleep and making decisions which have serious

implications on business operations and strategy, then using the work bathroom to breastfeed baby! Over time we have tripled our coffee trade and have broken all our personal best records in terms of food & coffee trade. We consistently push incredibly hard,” says Anita. Now with the help of her amazing team, Anita and her husband have been free to open Lounge Three87. “It has also allowed me to step away and fall pregnant with our third child,” says Anita. “And so the adventure continues!” ANITA HAY: Cafe on the Mount 2/87 Mt Eliza Way, 9787 3738 and Lounge Three87 3/87 Mt Eliza Way, 9787 1057

Firefly Tales Photography Karen Matthews is the proud owner of Firefly Tales Photography in Mount Eliza. Photographing pregnant mamas and babies in their first year of life, specialising in newborns. “For me, it is all about capturing light and love, and telling each beautiful little story as it unfolds” Karen says. As a business woman and mother Karen believes it is important for her girls, aged 3,5 and 7 who she describes as gorgeous and energetic, to see her as being a present, hands-on mum, but also as a business woman who has followed her dreams and created something beautiful

and authentic. “I built an amazing studio at the front of our property. This not only allows me to maximise my time with family, but also give my clients a superb experience in a warm, welcoming, purpose-built environment.” Karen says of her work space. She refers to her studio as “a place of calm and serenity - a retreat for exhausted new parents to relax with their new little one, and just ‘be’.” Karen’s recipe for blending family and work is to grow the business as her little ones grow up. “I always leave one day of

the weekend as a family day.” Karen says “Ensuring balance so that both my family and my clients have the very best I can offer is exceptionally important to me.” “I love this life I have created and I feel so grateful to have an amazing, fulfilling business and still be home to nurture my little ones.” For more information visit http://www. fireflytales.com.au or you can contact Karen Matthews on 0412 470 599, via karen@fireflytales.com.au

ME & MS GEORGIE Georgie Morell has returned to the Mornington Peninsula after 24 years, having left the corporate world to focus on a very different new business, ME & MS GEORGIE. Georgie has lived in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Paris, Santiago and Boston and says: “My personal style and inspirations have been cultivated by my many travel adventures to Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North and Latin America and Africa. It’s no surprise my new brand echoes a Gypsy style.” The seed was planted on a recent trip to Morocco, when she was captivated by the old-world craftsmanship and rich aesthetic showcased by local artisans. “Motivated by the idea of supporting these artisans producing bespoke shoes, bags and jewellery, I have developed a unique collection of beautiful hand-made objects of desire,” says Georgie. The first collection was released in May this year. The ME & MS GEORGIE online story offers hand-woven raffia

Inimitable Brisbane music group Topology are celebrating the release of their 11th album Share House this month with a series of unique, groundbreaking, performances ahead of a landmark Australian tour. Including several “house party” style album events (which the band hosts in full Share House character), Topology also present an on stage performance fusing physical theatre and music in a wordless narrative conveyed through virtuosic instrumentation. With the musicians John Babbage – saxophone; Robert Davidson – bass; Bernard Hoey – viola; Therese Milanovic – piano and Christa Powell – violin, portraying fictional characters while playing intricate original music, the Share House on stage production features an innovative collaboration between Topology, director Annie Lee, lighting designer David Walters and production designer Bill Haycock. Share House, described by the group as an “instrumental opera” loosely set in the 70s, tells the story of five dysfunctional bandmates sharing a dishevelled flat and interwoven life; full of warmth, fun and unrequited love. With the members of Topology having been in a creative relationship together since 1997, one wonders how deep they will have to dig to unearth their inner flatmate, having no doubt been through many ups and downs along their incredible musical journey. As Australia’s most surprising music organisation, the group is renowned for their breadth of original work across many genre boundaries, as well as the depth and variety of their collaborations. The quintet has created stunning new work with Geoffrey Rush, Neil Armfield, the Brodsky Quartet, the Southern Cross Soloists, Terry Riley, TaikOz, the Queensland Ballet,

Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan, the Kransky Sisters, Gerry Connolly, and William Barton, to name a few. Topology’s focus is original music, and they work with many leading international composers, including those from Canada (Tim Brady), the UK (Andrew Poppy, Michael Nyman, Jeremy Peyton Jones), the US (Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Zorn, William Duckworth, Carl Stone, Paul Dresher) and with many Australian composers. For Share House, however, they have – true to form – developed yet another suite of intriguing collaborative relationships, this time a unique cross-cultural and mixedmedium collaboration celebrating the works of ten incredibly diverse artists from Brisbane and the Philippines to create artwork inspired by music from the album. “The Share House story celebrates a motley crew of housemates finding common ground in the music that they make together, so we felt the album art should reflect this “coming together” through a collaboration of visual art,” Artistic Director, and bassist, Robert Davidson said. “The artists were given individual tracks to inspire artworks in their chosen medium, and the results are incredibly diverse - from painting and sculpture to tattoo design and jewellery.” Further expanding on the community spirit of a share house, the commissioned artworks will be auctioned off with 100% of proceeds going to Habitat For Humanity Philippines to rebuild homes devastated by the recent Typhoon Haiyan, while fans of Topology’s creative canon will find recreations of the individual pieces within the album sleeve of Share House. on Friday June 27 by Environment Minister Greg Hunt at No. 10 High Street ‘the local creative‘ store. The Up-Pop Hastings concept is the result of an partnership between the Westernport Chamber of Commerce, the Federal Government’s Department of Employment & Training, Mornington Peninsula Shire and a number of peninsula artists under the branding of Renew Local Art. The concept is loosely based on ‘Renew Newcastle’ model of artistrun creative micro businesses established to reinvigorate the downtown and historic precinct of Newcastle. Artists are now filling 6 of the long term empty retail spaces in Hastings to bring life and colour through stocking the shops with original handmade and created works. Pam Ford has coordinated the project establishing a successful working group to secure participation in the program. The project was advertised through the Shire’s Arts blog www.artsonthepeninsula which generated much interest for the project amongst peninsula artists. Oak Hill Gallery from Mornington were keen to become involved in support of Westernport artists who had expressed the need for a space in which to share ideas, develop artist-run activities and exhibit. Yvonne Watson from Oak Hill Gallery said “Mornington has been a bit of a distance to travel for artists from the Western Port region. The Oak Hill@Hastings gallery in Salmon Street hopes to offer a much needed space for local artists on the Westernport side of the peninsula”.

Other Up-Pop Hastings shops is the ‘High Street Artspace’ @ no 12 High Street stocked with work from a number of peninsula artists along with artwork by the Shire’s Cultural Planner Andrea Ebsworth. Andrea said, “The aim of the Artspace is to reinvigorate interest for high quality handmade art and craft and to provide space for workshops and classes from the rear of the shop and if necessary access the Hastings Hall”. At no 10 is ‘The Local Creative’ opened by Angie Baker, Marketing Manager of the Westernport Chamber of Commerce; another space dedicated to the handmade works of peninsula artists but with a completely different feel to the High Street Artspace next door or OakHill@Hastings round the corner at 3/45 Salmon Street. There are also artists situated further up High Street and also in Queen Street. The program aims to further attract graphic and digital designers, studio photographers, musicians, art groups and other cultural producers interested in revitalising Hastings through this creative micro-business venture. The big challenge and an indicator of success will be how well the Up-Pop ‘Renew Local Art’ program attracts people from across the peninsula. A centralised marketing campaign will be developed to raise awareness of the initiative and attract visitors to the beauty and character of Hastings. For further information contact Angie Baker Marketing Manager the Westernport Chamber of Commerce on 0430 313 649 info@hastings.org.au

Come check out The UP POP HASTINGS ART TRAIL , we have put local artists in the empty shops rent free on a month to month lease. For more information contact Angie 0430 313 649 or email info@hastings.org.au

At Home with Art @ Whistlewood

Curator, speaker and writer Emily McCulloch Childs to speak on mythology in Aboriginal art.

Much of today’s Aboriginal art has its base in Aboriginal belief systems that include the existence of supernatural beings and creation ancestors that travelled the lands creating landforms, people and the cosmos. In her illustrated talk The Big Myth: Supernatural beings and mythology in Aboriginal art, curator, writer and Whistlewood co-director Emily McCulloch Childs will explore this history as well as the major dreamings of fire and water. “The great spirit beings such as the Rainbow Serpent, the Seven Sisters, the Dingo and numerous others are believed to have ‘set the pattern’ of living for all the natural world, and all in it - including people,” says McCulloch Childs. “In the Aboriginal belief system these creation ancestors are still alive today in spirit. Art, whether it be a bark, carving or acrylic painting is the medium through which they live on.” The act of painting or carving, says McCulloch Childs, is also in itself a form of ceremony, in which the spirit and laws of the ancestor are replenished and also made relevant to the lives of people today. A PhD student at the Monash Indigenous Centre, Monash University, Emily McCulloch Childs is a third generation Peninsula resident, art writer, curator and publisher. Her grandfather, the late Alan McCulloch AO was founding director of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and the first author of the leading reference work McCullochs Encyclopedia of Australian Art which Emily and her mother Susan McCulloch OAM continue today. Whistlewood at Shoreham has been the McCullochs family home since 1951 and the

headquarters of the family’s writing, publishing and art consultancy for more than 30 years. Attendees of the talk on Saturday August 2, will also receive a private view of the more than 50 new works the McCullochs have selected for exhibition and sale from Aboriginal arts centres around Australia, and all are welcome to visit on Sunday August 3 from 10 am to 5 pm. Blind date with a book Flinders College students recently went on a blind date with a book. Mrs Bridget Forster, English teacher, set the stage for Year 7 and 8 students as they arrived at their wider reading class to find a selection of books mysteriously wrapped and adorned with colourful gift tags. The tags featured a few key words hinting at the content, style and appeal. Bridget is passionate about reading and says “I love introducing students to books and reading because I genuinely feel that reading is a habit which will enrich their lives. It is a basic pleasure that should be a part of our lives like other forms of culture such as music.” Students perused the collection and made their selections. Some students correctly guessed the book’s title prior to

Peninsula North

opening them; other students were pleasantly surprised when they unwrapped their book. Students had to commit to reading their selected book for twenty minutes, at which point they could swap with a friend or unwrap another. Surprisingly, only a couple of students chose to abandon their books after twenty minutes and the majority borrowed their title to take home at the end of the lesson. Students remarked that they enjoyed selecting a book based on its content rather than its cover. Many were introduced to fiction they would not usually choose and were glad to have expanded their reading horizons. Bridget is concerned that “Australian student achievement in reading and literacy has declined and one can surmise that the results reflect less time spent reading. I think that overall, fewer young people are reading fiction for pleasure on a regular basis. We try to reverse this trend through our reading programs.” With the proliferation of digital devices and the increasing use of social media, we are becoming a society that is more prone to distraction. Research has shown that the way we read on screen is fairly shallow and erratic. We tend to scan text and not necessarily comprehend the content. We also move between sources very quickly. In contrast, the practice of reading a book forces us to commit to one source and to concentrate for an extended period of time. Reading can be a calming retreat from an over-stimulating digital world.

Some interesting facts about reading: • Readers exercise at twice the rate as non-readers, they are twice as likely to volunteer and they attend more sporting and cultural events. Rather than the stereotype of reading as a passive, lonely pursuit, reading actually results in more active and socially involved citizens. • A longitudinal study of Australian children showed that children who read were more likely to do their homework and play board games. In contrast, non-readers were more likely to play console games. • Reading encourages empathy. In order to read fiction, we must journey with a character through their experiences and emotions. Studies have found that readers are better at empathising with others than non-readers. • American prisons predict how much prison space will be required in the future by looking at the current number of ten and eleven year olds who can’t read.

After teaching sport for more than 25 years it was a natural progression for Sheryl Hood to start Playball Peninsula North, an initiative that is committed to introducing your child to the world of sport in exciting, positive and energetic classes. “I started Playball Peninsula North in 2008 after my son and daughter, who were three and four at the time, had attended the Aspendale Gardens franchise,” says Sheryl. “As a teacher I fell in love with the program and seeing my kids do it I wanted to offer the same on the peninsula.” Playball is a specialized coaching program, designed for 2 to eight year olds, to teach your child sport and life skills. “It takes a holistic approach to early childhood development and, as a result, the program develops children physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually,” says Sheryl. “We offer a fun and challenging learning environment and include life and personal skills so it is not just about sport.” These days with less children playing outside, Playball is a great way to introduce your child to sport and all the physical and emotional benefits of physical activity. “It is using sport as a tool to deliver the program, with a high emphasis on team work and good sportsmanship,” says Sheryl. “We have what we call the three C’s - confidence, concentration and competence. Because it is more important for young children to learn confidence and how to play well with

others, the early stages of our program are non-competitive and designed to provide all children with the opportunity to participate at their own level.” For Sheryl, starting Playball Peninsula North has been the perfect opportunity to put her skills into practice and make a difference in children’s lives. Playball Peninsula North operates classes in Mt Eliza on Monday to Friday mornings and Wednesday afternoons, and in Mornington on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Walking the Talk at Penbank

Excursions are great! You learn so much. And if you are adventurous, like explorers, excursions in schools can become expeditions. That is what has happened at Penbank School here on the Mornington Peninsula. Wugubank is Penbank’s annual expedition! It is the Wugularr School, a remote school in the Northern Territory and the Penbank Mob taking a journey each year to each other’s place. In 2009 Penbank and Wugularr developed this amazing partnership predominantly involving students in Year 5 & 6. In preparation for these expeditions, the children know they are going to meet new people and make new friends. They also know they are going to make new discoveries and visit new places, just as explorers do. These

JULY 2014 (33)

expeditions are amazing adventures! So much is learnt and discovered about their very different worlds! Words that describe these experiences such as exciting, challenging, exhilarating, amazing and beautiful come to mind when watching the children in their work and play. As the schools journey together they know to walk softly on the land and appreciate the beauty of the surrounds of each other’s environments. They learn about each other through their languages, stories and schoolwork. They teach each other all sorts of things. There are constant smiles on faces, as the children are so happy to see each other. They freely laugh because they have so much fun and love to share jokes. They dance, sing, play sport; they walk, they talk!

These Wugubank expeditions are amazing journeys. With our feet we run, jump; we walk. And as we walk, we talk. And with our hands we show that we are friends because it is through our hands that we give and share. And mostly the children are arm in arm or holding hands because they are great friends. Wugubank at Penbank is held during National Reconciliation Week. This year’s theme, ‘Let’s Walk the Talk’ absolutely reflects the work that enables these two school communities to meet each year. The Penbank School family truly understands that reconciliation is a work in progress. The journey continues – Let’s Walk the Talk! www.penbank.vic.edu.au

TIPS TO KEEP THE WARMTH WHERE YOU NEED IT Start thinking about keeping warm the energy efficient way this winter with a few ideas to keep warm without hurting the environment or the bank. Use heavy curtains to stop heat escaping from your windows Up to 40 per cent of the heat escaping from your home in winter is from uncovered windows. Heavy, lined curtains, which extend below the window frame, will insulate and help keep the warmth in.

Install insulation in your house A well-insulated house can shave as much as 45% off your energy costs, install or top up your insulation. With energy prices set to rise, installing insulation now is a smart way of avoiding excessive bills in the future.

Seal up gaps and cracks that let the cold air in In your average Victorian home, if you added up all the cracks and gaps, it would be the equivalent of having a 1 metre by 1.5 metre window open all the time. They can account for 15 – 25 percent of heat loss in your home. Seal up cracks and gaps using weather stripping around doors and windows, gap filler for cracks in the walls and even a simple door snake for the bottom of the door. You can buy all of these things at your local hardware store, cheap as chips!

Install pelmets on top of your windows These are either boxes which sit over your

JULY 2014 (33)

curtain rod or ‘invisible pelmets’ which sit above your curtain rod and butt up against the back of the curtain, and they do a great job of stopping cold air coming in to your room. If you don’t have them, a cheap alternative is to attach a bit of plywood or corrugated plastic to the top of your curtain rail, out of sight behind the top of the curtain. Or even pop a scarf up there.

Watch the temperature on your heater Heat the rooms you are using to around 20ºC in winter, a comfortable temperature for most people. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat on your heater, place a thermometer in your living area to keep an eye on the temperature. And think of putting on a jumper before you turn up the heat.

EvEry succEssful journEy bEgins with a plan

Close off any rooms that are not in use Furniture can’t feel the cold so why waste energy heating areas that you’re not using? If your heating system will let you, turn it off in empty rooms. And don’t leave your heater or cooling system running all night or while you’re out. Turn it off or install a timer.

Let the sunshine in during the day If you have any north facing windows, open up their curtains when it is sunny to let the sun heat up your house for you for free.

If you can’t heat the room, heat yourself If you can’t insulate your room or block draughts, it will be hard to heat the whole room, especially with a small electric heater. In this case you are better off sitting near the heater, so it at least keeps you warm.

Time to turn it ON People seem to live 3 types of lives, believes mindset coach Dr Ben Carvosso. “It’s exciting to work with people and help them get the life they want.” “The first type of life I get to work with is the TRAPPED life. A life where people feel trapped. Trapped doing the same things over and over again. Like a caged animal initially they have feelings of anger, they blame others and make excuses. Over time though it leads them to feelings of helplessness.” Dr Ben says “I love working with these clients and seeing their world open up as they find the way out of the cage and get unstuck.” The second type of life I see is the TEPID life. These are the people who are out of the cage but still in the zoo. They have a nice life, a life that is ok, its good, you know not bad. They have a life that looks good on the outside but inside their

career, health and relationships are slowly dying. And they start to ask themselves, “is this all there is to life?” The third type of life I get to coach is the TURNED ON life. These people are out of the cage, beyond the walls of the zoo and off to their Theme Park. These clients want to design their life (Theme Park). This is a life that can be extra-ordinarily ordinary. A life that embraces the rollercoasters of the theme park, and is full of vibrancy and fulfillment. “Its very fulfilling seeing people move through to the theme park of their dreams” says Dr Ben So if you are feeling trapped, tepid or want a more turned on life, would you benefit from a Discover Coaching session with Dr Ben. For just $49 your ideal life could be just through the door. The On Button 1392 Nepean Hwy Mt Eliza 9787 8518 Find them On Facebook too!

Friends with benefits Amicus, which means friendship in Latin, is the brain child of UK expats Donna Sutherland and Maria Redmond. These hair and beauty experts initially met on a chat line before bumping into one another at a party in Mornington over a year later (when they had both relocated in Australia). Fate had pulled them together, talent and beauty industry insider knowledge sets their salon apart. This hair and beauty one stop spot just off Main Street in Mornington maybe new, but Amicus’ experienced hair stylists and beauty therapists know how to deliver first class client service with creative flair. They’ve been working in the industry collectively for decades (you’ve probably already met some of them as they’ve been working on the peninsula for years). Hair care and beauty –think waxing, manicures, pedicures and make up – are performed in a relaxed and

friendly environment. Modern haircutting and styling brings a fresh perspective; these girls know what’s on trend and what works for each individual. Amicus specialises in hair colour and uses only the best quality product – organic colour systems from environmentally conscious ZenzTherapy in Copenhagen and plant plus science based hair care label Aveda ensures your hair and skin looks it’s most radiant in the most ‘planet sensitive’ way. Mornington Peninsula’s own Leah Dowel is proof that following your passion and good old-fashioned hard work is the perfect combination for success. Her proof is Indigo Flame Soy Candles that has now been supplying beautiful Soy Candles to loyal customers for two years. You can’t call yourself a candle lover until you’ve lit one from the Peninsula’s very own Indigo Flame Soy Candle company. Indigo Flame Soy Candles are hand-poured with love and come in over 30 sumptuous scents. “I sell my candles at markets like Red Hill every second month and the Mornington market every month. We do candle parties as well and I sell them online,” says Leah. “I like to do all my markets myself so I can meet the customers and see how excited

they are with their candles.” Because fragrance is so important, Leah has made sure that her Indigo Flame Soy Candles are strongly scented. “There’s nothing worse than a candle that doesn’t smell, so all my candles have a distinct scent. They are all triple scented candles and everything is hand poured by me so you can be sure of the quality control,” says Leah. “The food scents are my favourites, blueberry muffin in particular, but there is something for every mood from sweet florals to food scents, plain vanilla and tropical scents.” Indigo Flame Soy Candles make the whole house smell beautiful, and are the safest around children, as the wax doesn’t get super hot and they are not breathing in any chemicals. Soy wax is a favourite of environmentally conscious consumers, made

from hydrogenated soybean oil, and it is biodegradable. “Soy candles are stronger smelling and throw off more scent than regular candles. They are cleaner burning than paraffin candles and really eco-friendly,” says Leah. Indigo Flame Soy Candles have melts, tins, jars and diffusers, available to purchase online, at markets or candle parties. Fat? Tired? Sex is the last thing you want? Constipated? Cold? Losing your hair? Bloated? Craving sugar? Depressed? Irritable?

These are some of the symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Research shows us that over 40% of Australian women have an undiagnosed, underactive thyroid gland. Which means no matter how many hours you exercise or cut out carbs you can’t lose that spare tyre around the middle. Blood test results from your doctor may not pick this up. Your July stars

Aries

Once again the emphasis is on home and family this month. You may be tempted to spend your money on something pleasurable but household appliances and home structures may require some investments. Take comfort that once matters close to home are fixed then you can focus on your own goals again.

Sagittarius

Virgo

Capricorn

Virgos get by with a little help from friends this month. This could be valuable time with personal friends, or some help or good news from work colleagues. Either way it is time for you to realise that you are not an island. Enjoy some good company and tolerate the imperfections of human nature.

Gemini

Libra

Cancer

Ducks seem to float across the water’s surface but their feet are busy underneath. Your life is a little like this during July. You are able to achieve much in the long term as long as you ensure that your efforts are heading you in the right direction. Stay focussed on the big picture.

July is a busy month as you continue on projects started last month. Once again money matters are on your mind. You need to either have your coffers or your self-esteem boosted by ideas and projects undertaken this month. Otherwise don’t let yourself be distracted from the big picture. The planets align in July to pave the way for you to focus on yourself. You need to nurture your own ideas and boost your own sense of self rather than nurture your loved ones. In particular you need to undertake activities that boost your self esteem and personal income.

Leo

July is a month of contrasts. On the one hand you are social, the life of the party and taking part in many fun-filled activities. On the other hand you also crave some “me” time. Perhaps your home entertainment system helps you attend to both needs - fun and relaxation.

Taurus

The theme for July is similar to last month. Once again your personal finances come under the microscope this month. It is time to review your income and spending habits. You may be tempted to indulge in pleasurable possessions but watch your budget. Short journeys may prove fruitful in many ways.

by Stephanie Johnson Stephanie is an experienced Astrologer and regular contributor to Mornington Peninsula Magazine.

July provides you with an excellent opportunity to ensure that you are aligned with your true life purpose. You can make adjustments to ensure that you are heading in the right direction. It is time to make adjustments if you are not happy with your career and/or marital status.

Scorpio

Once again you are required to assess in what and in whom you are investing your valuable time and energy. Are your investments paying off or are you wasting your time? Continue on the work that you started in June. Make the changes now and satisfaction results. The theme for July is similar to June. Your work colleagues continue to play an important role in your life. Advice from others who have experience and expertise is likely to be beneficial. You also need to continue your focus on your work/life balance.

Aquarius

The planets align in July heralding a time to focus on your daily regimen. Are you living a healthy and fulfilled life? Do you enjoy the company of your work colleagues? If yes then you are likely to continue to head in the right direction. If not the time has come to make some adjustments.

Pisces

The theme for July is very similar to last month. It is time to have some fun. Spending time with children can be a source of pleasure, or taking part in other enjoyable activities. Take some time to create some space in your own home so that you can relax and enjoy your life.

PADDOCK TO PLATE Since Sonya and Kenneth Neff moved to Woolumbi Farm in Tyabb, organic farming has become their way of life. Both view the enterprise with one vision: offer the public beautiful produce, ethically grown. From the happily scrounging poultry and rare-breed Wessex Saddleback pigs to the heirloom vegetables, the pair are striving to bring back yesteryear’s style to today. The produce at Woolumbi is nurtured with a love and passion that is revealed in the quality and flavour. “We thought that it would be wonderful to be able to provide what we take for granted every day,” said Sonya “It’s a return to something that’s been lost from some contemporary food processing; flavour, what real food is really about.” The revamped original barn is now a beautiful white weatherboard produce outlet, surrounded by paddocks where the

Tuscany. The master butcher was impressed with Kenneth’s work and offered an invitation-only six week master class in the charcuterer’s art. As his knowledge and skills grew, he also gleaned a number of the recipes from the famous butchery. Many of the products in the farm-store use these legendary recipes, said to have the ‘true taste of Tuscany’. As a master charcuterer, Kenneth wants to pass the traditional knowledge on to others. He has now held classes at the farm for close to 10 years. “People come in and say that they’ve never tasted anything so tender or tasty, they’re absolutely loving it,” said Kenneth. “Some animals are free to roam and graze. Hand crafted produce and product fills rows of shelves and pigeon holes, somewhat reminiscent of the goods on display in vintage photographs of corner grocery stores. The range includes condiments such as mustards, preserved fruits, sauces, soaps, jams, olive oil, fresh vegies and gift baskets of mixed goods. Fine beef and lamb cuts are available too. Top grade T Bones, eye fillet and specialty cuts from contented cows that have happily grazed on rich peninsula pasture. Tender lamb back-straps, cutlets, rumps and mince. All from nurtured, contented herds. Specialty orders are happily available on request. Imagine a wedding reception where everyone feasts on melt-in-your-mouth meat.

travel from Melbourne just for our famous cuts of fresh meat and sausages.” Visitors not only rave about the flavour and texture, older folks claim that ‘This is what the meat used to taste like when I was a kid.” Sonya and Kenneth even know ethicalvegetarians who will eat the Woolumbi Farm meat. Woolumbi’s delicious gourmet sausages are preservative, gluten and filler free. Made with prime meat, spiced to give balance and tell a tasty story, enhancing but not overwhelming the meat’s flavour. “It’s these differences that people absolutely rave about,” said Kenneth. “Not only is the meat flying off the shelves but also the fresh fruits, vegies, chutneys, jams, mustards, pickles and preserves.” Woolumbi Farm is a special ‘Peninsula’ place. The doors of the beautiful produce store are open from Friday-Monday. Come along for a taste of wholesome quality. Woolumbi Farm is at 233 Coolart Road, Tyabb. The Neffs have farmed the Wessex Saddlebacks since 2005. When Kenneth later sought to buy a boar, he discovered that the breed were critically endangered and extinct in Britain. Taken by the rare breed of English origin, he eventually put together a small herd with a boar named Carl, now still at the farm. Wessex Saddlebacks are regarded as excellent eating and are typically grown for ham and bacon. At Woolumbi, Kenneth and Sonya are striving to produce true free-range pigs, for the production of fine smoked meats and smallgoods. Kenneth’s Swiss background, where smoked meat is part of everyday life, led to a lifelong interest in charcuterie: the ability to preserve food with salt, spices and sugar. His knowledge and experience in the practice is now second to none. Kenneth came into contact with one Italy’s most famous pork butchers, based in

No pretence just great tucker Fabulous A lovely spot for a lazy lunch, Rumours cafe overlooks the beach and the boat ramp at Mt Martha and buzzes away with a passing parade of appreciative eaters. By day, Rumours is popular with mums with bubs, business bods, tourists, local teens, giggling girls and good blokes. On weekend evenings, in restaurant-mode, it can be a romantic nook or a select spot for a family affair. All the while, casual is key. Run by accomplished restrateur Anna Gentile whose eateries have included Anna’s on the Park in Frankston, Cafe 115 and Via Boffe in Mornington. Aussie-Italian influence abounds and Anna has stuck with a lot of the same staff for more than a decade. Daubed with Anna’s grandmother’s nickname, Anna’s La Zucchera Cooking School and restaurant, behind 65 Main Street, Mornington is about to morph into a boutique function centre. “We’re all about fresh food, for a start,” said Anna “Simply prepared with skilful in-house prep.” “People with passion, cooking in the kitchen, and serving throughout , is a big part of our formula for success. Our fresh produce comes in every day, and we keep it ‘real’.” There is no pretence, just great tucker. A mixed roast is served on Friday and Saturday night. The passion rubs off on head chef Joshua Noonan and chef Vincent Tokay. Seasonal specials are offered for lunch and dinner.

Popular lunches include an eye fillet burger with string fries, a daily pasta and organic parmesan-crumbed chicken breast served with a house-specialty slaw. Big dinner dishes include a bowl of seafood in a subtly spiced sauce, porcini risotto and eye fillet medallions. But most diners prefer to choose from an array of small dishes, suitable to share. More than a dozen dishes serve nicely as an entree or tapas including: Cuca Spanish sardines served with aged balsamic reduction and onion relish, popular Italian cheeses Buffalo and treccia cheese with tomato, and EVOO, oregano and a touch of chilli. Meat lovers adore the pork and beef meatballs, slowly simmered in a red wine and tomato ragout. Vegetarians go for the organic red and white quinoa salad with roast vegies. The buffalo mozzarella is something special: imported from Italy, Anna drives to Melbourne to get it. She also makes a lot of the desserts including the tiramisu. Breakfast and lunch is served from Wednesday to Sunday. Dinner is on Friday and Saturday night. Live music adds extra rhythm on Sunday afternoons. Rumours is a landmark eatery, over the crest and through the roundabout, half a km beyond the Mt Martha shopping centre at 464 Esplanade, phone 5974 4443. Haydn Godony

food, fresh look The food has always been outstanding at Benito’s and now the family-run business has taken the restaurant and function venue to a whole different level with a complete renovation and refurbishment well under way.

Coming into their 10th year of operation, it has been a long haul for Jo Nation and her family, but the results are breathtaking with a fresh coat of paint, and a fabulous blend of modern décor while retaining that wellloved rustic ambience. “Since I lost my husband last year I have been running the business on my own but have had wonderful support from my children and our very loyal staff,” says Jo. “My chef worked with my husband Dino for 20 years - he did his apprenticeship with him.” And Benito’s has a menu to die for with steaks their specialty. “We also love to cook pasta, risottos and seafood so there is something for everyone,” says Jo. “Our chef makes sure we can cater to special dietary needs.”

Benito’s is the ideal venue for any special occasion. “We cater for all styles of functions and are very flexible with our menu and guest needs, catering to cocktail style parties and weddings, a set menu, wedding banquets, birthdays and conferences,” says Jo. And for the beer and wine connoisseurs, Benito’s offers a large selection of local and international labels with over 20 types of beer including our own Red Hill and Cheeky Rascal cider. Harmony of texture flavour and colour Truffles are coming into season and will make their way, subtly, into the list of seasonal produce at Veraison Restaurant. Chef Mark Poulter updates the menu, guided by the weather, rather than the seasons, always including what is freshly available. “So when artichokes start appearing or rhubarb starts coming through, when the quality is there, it gets added to our menu,” said Mark. “We use truffles sparingly; sometimes sprinkled on risotto, added to a sauce or lacing ravioli. At this time of year they will go into hearty dishes.” The Veraison chilly-weather menu includes a couple of braises, buy not too many. Also typical is beautifully fresh King George whiting, tender Flinders Island lamb rump, high-grade eye fillet and juicy pork belly. Menu prices vary to reflect top-quality product costs. With that in mind, Veraison’s quality a-la-carte is very reasonably priced. “Pork belly costs $14 a kilo while duck breast is $36 a kilo, so that obviously affects the final price of the dish,” said Mark. “I also like using pork fillet. It’s lean, tender and tasty. Winter pork is like spring lamb - it’s at its best.” Mid winter is also the salami-crafting season. The breeze-dried meat must hang below 160 Celsius. Mark is skilled at charcuterie.

Sitting back with a cup of coffee, Mark creates a dish in his mind... “I haven’t decided yet, but a likely Veraison dish is pork fillet stuffed with perhaps quinces, braised cabbage or Jerusalem artichokes. Pork and apple go well, spiced with nutmeg and cloves, or maybe star anise or juniper berries,” said Mark. A harmony of texture, colour and flavour soon forms. Sharing the plate might be Jerusalem artichokes cooked in cream. The slightly smoky potato-like texture blends to make a very smooth accompaniment. “We would also need some green of some description. Tuscan kale is good at the moment and you simply cook it like spinach. Get rid of the stalky bit and sauté up the stripped leaves in salt, pepper and butter, that is all it needs. It keeps its colour and vitamin content,” Mark said. “Around July, a few months prior to the snapper season, King George whiting is at its best and often graces the menu. Barramundi is also our fish, simply grilled or pan-fried in French butter. The butter is browned-off then scooped up to glaze the fish, giving it a lovely, nutty flavour.” He also creates some really interesting additives, such as a mushroom and chorizo powder, made with semidried chorizo, fried till the oil is drained off. Mushrooms are added and the dark mixture is cooked till almost dry. The clumpy mix is then left to further dry and ends up looking like small stones. In a blender, it goes

to powder. “As an additive it contributes an intense salty, bacon-like mushroom flavour, which could be tossed through the kale. You could also add some nicely caramelised onions. With that sweetness you could also throw some pine nuts or salmon roe on top for a dash of orange colour.” A drop of syrupy reduced-balsamic, dotted here and there on the plate, adds an acidic spot. For some desserts, Mark is now using liquid nitrogen to create his own dip-n-dots style ice cream. Flavoured with tastes such a violet petals. Liquid nitrogen can be dangerous and is not cheap but it can be used to create unique, stellar desserts for an event such as a wedding. Sous vide rhubarb is another specialty dessert. Matched with apple panna cotta and organic muesli. Mark’s galactic desserts include a blown sugar balloon filled with powdered ice cream and a re-created poached pear which is not what it initially seems... A two course lunch is offered for $39 or three courses for $49, Monday to Friday, year round. A Bastille theme is planned for July 14. Veraison is open for lunch daily and for dinner on Friday and Saturday at 269 Myers Road, Merricks. Details: 5989 7081 or veraisonrestaurant. com.au

The snack menu includes bite-sized jalapenos and a trio of dips such as sundried tomato, French onion, avocado, hummus, and tzatziki. The Function Room is re-jigged on Friday nights, Bloke’s World style, with personal waitress service and the best Footy games on the big screen. Chef Ahmed Inusah presents dishes ranging from pubclassic parmas, steaks and fish to exotic combinations that might blend Vietnamese with Moroccan and reminders of his early training in Ghana, adding lashings of spices when desired. Breakfast is served from 8am on Saturday and Sunday. Most popular is bacon and free-range eggs, done any way you want. The eggs Benedict has lashes of house-made hollandaise. The wagyu burger features well-marbled beef, houseminced with added gherkins, fresh herbs and onion. The patty is spooned with bois boudran sauce that is somewhere between tomato and chilli, as it reclines amid layers of bacon, lettuce, tomato and tasty cheese and a side of chunky chips. The Monday night curries are an affair for spice lovers. Varieties include Moroccan, Sri Lankan and Mauritian. “The base of each curry is sweet onions, sweated-off, with a blend of spices which depend on the origin of the dish. For Mauritian flavours, cumin, paprika, coriander stems, ginger, garlic and curry leaves are tossed in until the onion is a lovely golden brown,” Ahmed said. Tomato paste is added and caramelised with the onion to achieve a sweet, tangy flavour through a tagine-style

cooking method. Depending on the curry, different stocks are used. The dish is slow cooked for a couple of hours and then allowed to sit while the flavours infuse. The Asian style calamari salad is a fresh herb feast that combines Vietnamese and regular mint with coriander, a pinch of chilli, bean-shoots and ginger-laced tamarind dressing with a dash of Japanese yuzu. The calamari is coated in a spice mix that includes ground fennel and coriander seeds with Szechwan pepper. The choice of $15 parmas each Wednesday and steaks on Thursday are hugely popular. MAGICAL MIX OF FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT AT HARBA A magic mix of fine food and excellent entertainment, Harba Oyster Bar and Grill has developed into a Mornington mainstay. The winter menu offers something for everyone. A firm favourite for the fellas is the sticky ribs. Barbecued pork with a side of kipfler potatoes and cornkissed avocado salsa. Soft, sweet and succulent they are just the thing if your taste buds are telling you to feed the man meat. You will want the finger bowl. Chef Brad Sampson adds a clever twist to traditional favourites and also peppers the menu with an occasional exotic. The oh-so-Spanish seafood paella (pictured) is a smooth mix of the best of the briny blue tossed through soft rice infused with tasty stock. Slices of chorizo add to the action, ringed with Mt Martha mussels and the attractive touch of half a grilled lemon. Asian-style fish fanatics go gaga over the tuna. Coated with a crust of spicy sesame seeds, the pink fish is super fresh and gives glory to the fork. Sharing the serving board is a big dob of wasabi-avocado mousse, wilted gai

lan greens, a little tower of sticky rice and a thick smear of lime-laced tom yum sauce. Seared scallops are served with cauliflower puree, apple and prosciutto. The salt and pepper calamari is as soft as a whisper and complimented with roquette, red onion and harissa aioli. The 18-hour lamb dissolves on the taste buds. The lamb salad is a nice nibbly mix of shredded fillets, red onion, semi-dried tomato, buffalo mozzarella, roasted macadamia and fig vino-cotto dressing. Harba’s $30 two-course lunch special, from Wednesday to Friday, is loved by groups of girls and business bods, and includes a complimentary glass of wine or beer. The steak night each Wednesday offers porterhouse for $20 or eye fillet for $25, served with chips and salad or mash and vegies. THE SPICE KING Atmospheric and authentic, 1001 Nights adds a delicious shot of Middle Eastern spice to Mt Eliza.

The Heritage in Balnarring pics by Haydn Godony

“We are different, we are a Middle Eastern experience, ready for discovery,” said proprietor and head chef Mark Syawish. “We are the good news from the Middle East.” Mark has been chefing the food from his homeland for more than 30 years, but is always ready to learn more and recently returned from a discovery-tour holiday to his homeland of Iraq. 1001 Nights offers dozens of dishes unique in our region. Falafel, Kibbeh, Dolma, Tabouli, Fattoush and Shawarma salad, Tajines. A dozen breakfast choices include Babylonian Benedict, made with grilled sujuk sausage, poached free-range eggs, spinach and hollandaise. Very popular for lunch and dinner is the plate of three mixed Tikkas - char-grilled Riverine lamb, Hazeldene free-range chicken and Istanbuli kebab. Condiments include tahini, red pepper sauce and spicy harissa. The sauces match the meats. The lamb tikka’s preparation starts with a top quality aged backstrap which Mark dices to bite-sized chunks. The tender meat is marinated overnight in garlic, onion, olive oil and some secret spices. When ordered, the skewered lamb is cooked slowly over the coals, adding some smokiness. The lamb tikka is served on a bed of salad made from mixed green leaves, cherry tomatoes, Lebanese cucumber, black olives, chick peas, Spanish onion and lemon dressing. A side of Biryani rice makes a complimentary partnership. A dash of tzatziki adds excitement. A house specialty is the clay-pot kebab which is oven baked and soup-like with very soft meat. Breads are baked in a clay tandoori. The deli fridge display window offers a large array of

sweet, house-made pastries and desserts. The most popular is the baklava and the rose flavoured Turkish delight. Harking to the heritage of the mysterious Arabian world, inspired by Ali Baba and abracadabra, 1001 Nights Middle Eastern restaurant adds a magical touch to every dish. “I’m a fussy person and I have been making this style of food for so long that getting it ‘right’ is like an instinct. It’s in my blood.” said Mark. 1001 Nights will soon expand to the shop next door to create a cafe-bar and shish spot. 1001 Nights is at Shop 3, 86 Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza. The Deck - what a transformation, after being so many different personalities it appears this iconic building has come of age. The interior design is smart, cool, relaxed and slick. Warm fires, new York eatery, back bar vibes and upstairs Miami style deck with what can only be stated as the best view in town. I was expecting traffic noise, wind and glare, instead I got protection, music, and a brilliant choice of good food. These included gourmet tasty pizzas, homemade chips with aioli, all washed down with a great choice of wine by the glass and schooners on tap. POSSUM protection for damaged trees

Mornington Peninsula Shire in partnership with Mount Eliza Association for Environmental Care is taking steps to protect key trees in the Mount Eliza area from over-feeding by possums, as well as offering specially grown seedlings to residents who have lost trees due to possum damage. Recent investigation of trees in Mount Eliza has identified cases of tree foliage damage caused by possum feeding. The Shire has identified extensive possum feeding on indigenous tree species including Swamp Gum, Narrow-leaf Peppermint, Manna Gum and Snow Gum. Mount Eliza Association for Environmental Care representative Des Berry said: “The treed environment around Mount Eliza is very important for fauna, but overfeeding on vulnerable trees can cause irreparable damage, and it is important to protect key specimens from possum overbrowsing”. The Shire is currently placing a band around the trunks of some key vulnerable trees, and pruning select branches to minimise damage to key street trees and some groups of trees in reserves. This program has proven to be very effective with many trees restored to health. Briars Ward Councillor Bev Colomb said that the Shire’s installation of the guards on selected trees would prevent possum access, protecting those trees and providing damaged trees a chance to regenerate. “To date the protected trees have responded and are in good health,” she said.

Laura Crilly, Shire Nursery Coordinator, at Mornington Peninsula Shire Nursery at The Briars In addition to these protective measures the Shire Nursery has grown more than 4000 tree seedlings sourced from seed in Mount Eliza. The seedlings are Black Wattle, Blackwood, Black She-oak and Drooping She-oak which are indigenous to Mount Eliza and are less likely to be eaten by possums. Briars Ward Councillor Anne Shaw extended her thanks to Shire officers, in particular Simon Thorning from the Natural Systems Team, and the team at MEAFEC for their work on this project. In partnership, Mount Eliza Association for Environmental Care Inc and the Shire are offering the seedlings free to residents who have lost trees in the Mount Eliza area. Briars Ward Councillor Andrew Dixon said the program is something the Mount Eliza environmental organisation has been looking forward to. Des Berry said, “We are encouraging residents to take up the free tree offer and protect trees on their property. Possums have an abundance of vegetation on which to feed, and this program aims to protect individual trees, while offering residents an alternative tree to plant as habitat for native animals.” Mount Eliza Association for Environmental Care and the Shire are also happy to provide advice on protecting trees, but advise that the best way to obtain detailed advice on the health of particular trees is to consult an arborist. Other Mornington Peninsula townships are also showing the effects of possum browsing and further efforts are being considered by the Shire. If your trees have been affected by possums and you would like a free seedling, please visit the Shire Nursery at The Briars, Nepean Highway Mount Martha. More info: 5974 8417.

DECOR HOME GARDEN

Growing your own food has many well-established benefits, yet for some it is still deemed to involve too much work to make it an attractive activity. Like many aspects of suburban living there are tasks to perform in the food garden to keep it functioning well, much the same as the upkeep to your dwelling, car or lawn. However if organised and understood well, most of these tasks can be enjoyed and shared with the whole family. It’s really a matter of not letting things get out of hand where you may have to play a bit of catch-up (like the housework). A couple of hours a week in the garden should be enough to keep your crops and trees producing food for you year round. Common tasks might include a bit of weeding, pruning, pest removal, successive planting and harvesting. Regular observation is the key. If you’re not watching what happens in the garden things can get away from you fairly quickly. A good way to keep on top of the gardening jobs, thereby avoiding those ‘big gardening weekends’ is to keep a gardening diary or put up a gardening blackboard where you can list the things to do as you see them on your regular inspections. This will be particularly helpful when it comes to organising your successive plantings of various crops. For example, as you see the lettuces or beetroot starting to put out leaves rapidly you can sow the next crop, or as the spuds start to get up around your knees you can

get some more in the ground (assuming you are not expecting frosts). A gardening blackboard sitting in a prominent spot will also be a good reminder as you walk past it every day. Over a number of growing seasons you will find a rhythm as with other aspects of your daily life, and care for your crops will become second nature. You will innately know what needs to be done and when. As mentioned in previous articles, most of the vegetative waste coming from the garden can be reused to create compost, mulch or liquid manures. It is well worth organising an area adjacent to the food garden where you can transfer your waste to be recycled and redistributed in the garden. This will maximise the retention of nutrients in your system, saving you money and saving on packaging. With a little organisation, keen observation and an hour or two each week your garden can feed you and your family much of your fruit and vegetable needs.

LIGHTING YOUR LIFE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY Jordan’s Lighting and Electricans was established thirtyfour years ago by Kevin and Christine Jordan. Starting at a smaller shop in Vale Street they moved to the current location on Main Street a few years later. Kevin and Christine retired 18 months ago to the Gold Coast and Haydn Grigor who started at Jordans over 20 years ago, now owns the business along with his wife Sally. Haydn was a fully qualified A Grade electrician before he began working for Kevin. Needless to say he knows this business inside out. Jordans Lighting have two electricians Haydn and Andrew and an apprentice Dayle who are out on the road. In the retail shop you will find Veronica who has also been with Jordans lighting for 20 years and Sally. The shop specializes in lamps and lampshades, exterior and interior lighting and ceiling fans. The electrical side of the business specializes in quality and reliable electrical installations, maintenance and repairs, both commercial and domestic. Haydn embraces new technology in the electrical industry. Lately being particularly busy “busy removing old technology Halogen downlights and installing LED downlights” says Haydn. LED lighting is one of the latest trends in technology, saving money on running costs and often a safer option. This family owned and run business continues to be the reliable option for locals seeking lighting or electrical work. No job is too big or too small.

SANDRA’S PASSION PAYS OFF

Sandra Dunbar is living proof that if you do what you love you will be successful, having now worked in real estate on the peninsula for two decades. With her background in sales and marketing, Sandra ran her own retail consulting business before that. “During that time I assisted Australia Post in the conversion of their first 1000 Post Offices into Post Shops, a forerunner of what is now their retail division,” says Sandra, who

then moved to the peninsula to begin her real estate career with Bennetts First National. “That was under the tutelage of Tony Grundy, who I cajoled into employing me as a mature age agent,” says Sandra with a laugh. “I was never one to sit still and soon completed my full licence and opened and managed their Rosebud office.” Due to her husband’s health issues Sandra decided to work from home as a sole trader focusing only on referrals and previous clients who contacted her. “I was fortunate to be given a start by a developer friend to sell their recently constructed units in Rosebud. Todays’ business escalated from there,” says Sandra. Realising her clients deserved the best of service she continued her accreditation by completing a Diploma

of Real Estate, the first in Victoria to be awarded the Diploma through Deakin University. Wanting to give something back to the industry, she completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment allowing her to pass on her vast knowledge to others. “Currently, with a colleague and in my spare time, I am working on self -publishing a cook book based on nutritional values, but still focusing on my business,” she says. And if that’s not enough, Sandra also supports local charities and sporting institutions and loves having her children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren around her. HONOR BAXTER MOVING WITH THE TIMES

Want to Sell?

Call Honor 0418 148 468

You don’t last in the real estate business as long as Honor Baxter has without understanding the importance of moving with the times. That’s why Honor Baxter Real Estate has taken the big step of being among the few who have embraced the future and done away with the shop front, replacing the old way with a revamped and technology savvy web site and ‘agent on the move’ work practice. “When the World Wide Web was launched 20 years ago little was known about the technology and even less about the possibilities it would bring in the years to come,” says Honor. “Now the majority of people who are seeking to buy real estate browse property on the internet. Why not? You can do it in your own time in the comfort of your lounge room. You can get information about the property, pictures, often a virtual tour; you can even put in an offer and sign a contract. No need to go to the real estate office.” With this in mind, Honor does realise that not everyone is comfortable buying real estate quite so hands free so she still understands the importance of seeing the property first but says there is no need for a shop front any more. Honor says the biggest breakthrough was the combination of mobile phones and the internet. “This really changed the way we search for real estate. Now you can be talking to the agent while you are looking at the property either viewing pictures on your phone or tablet or in front of the property,” says Honor. You can contact Honor best by email honor@honorbaxter.com.au or mobile 0418 148 468. Honor will come to you or you can see her at the new office.
