Sorrento took out their third consecutive premiership in 2012, beating the Tigers, but not this year. Club President, Mark Craw, says the team lost to the Sharks last year by just two points and in 2008 by four goals, but this year was different. He said: “Our persistence has finally paid off. Everything we worked for in the last three years with our coaches, Gavin Artico and Ash Chapman, has paid off. “We recruited Gavin three years ago as seniors coach and Sein Clearihan as assistant coach and fitness guru. “Together, they have worked with the players to get them to this point.” He went on to say that the first half was a close battle with only two goals separating the senior side at half time and added: “After half time, Dromana kicked 13 goals to Sorrento’s two, and that was it.” Mark says it has been a great year for the club: “Apart from two flags, we had five players named in the Nepean Team of the Year and seven players represented the club in this year’s interleague side, possibly a record for any club. “We also had two players, Rikki Johnston and Paul Minchington, who went onto the Vic Country Squad.” Mark says credit for the club’s success must go to the outstanding commitment of the players, Ash Chapman and coaches, Gavin Artico and Sein Clearihan. “Their dedication and commitment over the past three years has been outstanding and none of this would be possible

Arthurs Seat Challenge 2013 The Arthurs Seat Challenge is a renowned local event, held at one of the most iconic locations on the Mornington Peninsula. Staged annually since 2001, the 6.7 km fun run aims to promote the profile of the ‘Fit to Drive’ Program while raising funds to enable the program’s continuation. Fit to Drive is a high-quality and innovative road safety awareness program that is delivered to Year 11 students in every secondary school across the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula area. It was the tragic loss of young life in car crashes in 1999 and 2000 in our local community that saw the beginning of the Fit to Drive (f2d) Program, an initiative that was a direct and impassioned response from local principals, who accepted the challenge of reducing the toll and helping to save young lives. The Arthurs Seat Challenge provides a fantastic opportunity for schools, families and community members to rally together and raise awareness of the overrepresentation of young people in road crashes, in the hope we can continue to make a difference and alleviate the pain that road trauma causes. This year, the Arthurs Seat Challenge will be held on Sunday, November 10th at 8.30am, starting at Rosebud Pier and finishing at the summit of Arthurs Seat. For more information on Fit to Drive or to register for the Arthurs Seat Challenge, please go to the official event website at www.arthursseatchallenge.com.au

PASS THE CIGAR Cigar Box Guitar that is!

The first cigar box guitars were constructed, often quite well, in the southern US states around the mid 1800s. Always a ‘reserve’ instrument with jug bands, cigar box guitars have enjoyed some resurgence in popularity of late, sometimes being played by artists including Jimi Hocking, Geoff Achison, Ash Grunwald and Phil Manning. Mornington-based stonemason and Blues music fan Kyle James is becoming a specialist in the instrument’s construction. “I’ve been interested in Blues all my life and playing gob-slide [harmonica] since I was seven. I saw Bo Jenkins playing a ‘cigar box’ and I reckoned that I could build one of those. My style is similar to the original Depression-era Delta slide blues. Along with the pre-loved cigar boxes, the instrument’s construction materials include a bolt for the top bridge and an oldfashioned safe key for the bottom bridge. At the lower end, the strings are pop-riveted into position. So far, Kyle has built about 15 instruments. “My dad is a stone mason too and when he retired he was looking for something to do. Next, I made the first one, as a blueprint, pretty much with all guesswork. Now dad is making them too. We buy all the parts from Nepean Music here in Mornington. The other bits and pieces I source from places like hardware shops. “My guitars are fully electric but back originally they did put cut-outs in them, to make them acoustic guitars. “One of the hardest things now, since the tobacco laws changed, is getting the empty boxes, which I used to get from tobacconists. But now they say that because of ‘plain packaging’, they can’t sell them. So we’ve started bringing them in from overseas, we’ve just bought 25 boxes in from The States.” Cigar box guitars are pretty much always played with a slide. The cedar boxes are the most sought after, with the wood’s grain coming up a treat. They sell for $250-$400 and the top models boast a Humbucker pickup and tone control. “They are simple to play, because of only three strings, and there are lessons on Youtube too.” Kyle has a Facebook page, called Blues Wailer, with lots of his created instruments on display. JAZMIN’S SUCCESS

ON WORLD STAGE

Our very own local champion highland dancer Jazmin Joseph (who won many hearts busking on some very cold winter afternoons after school) has returned from Scotland after 4 weeks of intense competitions against some of the best dancers from around the World. Jazmin returns with some fantastic awards and achievements.

Highland Games (which she was placed 5th overall), Commonwealth Highland Championships, Glen Isla Highland Games (which she placed 1st overall and won over $100 and trophy and medals), and finally Cowal Highland Gathering - World championships, (which is the biggest, most spectacular Highland Games in the world).

Jazmin competed in 8 competitions around Scotland representing Australia, all leading up to the World Championships (Cowal highland gathering) in Dunoon on Friday 30th August. She was very successful coming home with 11 medals and 2 trophy’s from the tour.

Jazmin is now recognised on the World platform from Australia and was placed by many world reknown judges.

The biggest and most exciting achievement was being placed 4th by one of the three judges in her Sword Dance which gave her enough points to be placed 6th overall, from the top 30 9 year olds she competed against, from around the globe. She carrys the Cowal medal from the World championships with pride knowing she is 6th in the World for 9 year olds in her amazing Sword dance. A huge achievement. Some of the the competitions were Dundonald Highland Games, Brittish Open Championships, the World Pipe Bands championships, Andrew Carnegie Festival, Bute

“We come home with such an amazing achievement and would love to thank everyone who supported and helped us get there. Without the support of our local community we could not have done this trip and had such a wonderful experience.” says her proud Mum Leonie Deavin. “We are now working towards the Australian Champion of Champions Championships which are being held in Melbourne at Easter. Jazmin won her 8 year old section last Easter in Hobart.” Jazmin is still looking for any sponsorship for her ongoing travels and competitions around Australia and leading up to another tour of Scotland in 2014. Contact Leonie Deavin for further information on 0411 120 761.

Love Your Town and Share Its Future Very soon you will start to see many of your Mornington traders displaying the ‘Shop Local’ sticker in their shop front windows. These stickers represent the start of change. They place a renewed focus on supporting local community and encourage a joining of forces between shoppers and traders in a bid to keep small town strip shopping thriving forevermore. Shop Local is about you, me, him and her. It is about shopping in your street, your town and your local area. It’s about jobs and community, and it’s about investing locally today for a more prosperous community tomorrow. Shop Local is about making Mornington a better place to live, work and visit. We all have a collective responsibility to support our local businesses because when we do our town thrives. Local retailers fail as competition from multinational increases. Without you, the person that cares about what they buy and where they shop, our independent shops and businesses will die. It could be your favourite local coffee spot; that little boutique where you always find something special; or even your friendly local butcher who greets you by name.

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2013 (23)

Without our support these businesses will disappear.

Love Local Shop Local First ...where the shops meet the sea mainstreetmornington.com.au / mainstreetmornington ‘...look for our logo!’

It takes You and Me to start the trend! Next time you think of buying online, think about the joy you get when you can take your items home with you and enjoy them that very day. Turn into the door of that shop you walk past every day, you might be surprised – and there’s a good chance you’ll want to go back. Simply slow down, and become a tourist in your town and open your eyes to the amazing producers, retailers and services you have right on your doorstep. If every adult in Mornington spent just $5 a week in their local independent shops, instead of online and in major supermarkets, it would be worth and extra $4.8 million per year into our local economy. Makes you think doesn’t it?

love your sister

The Mornington community, Chamber of Commerce and surrounding businesses have really pulled together in the past couple of months to raise money and support the Love Your Sister event.

Three Pillars’ Development Makes Luxury Harbourside Living Achievable There’s a perfect storm brewing in Melbourne’s favourite playground, the Mornington Peninsula. Unprecedented ease of access to and from Melbourne via Peninsula Link has combined with low interest rates, lower vacancy rates and exceptional new infrastructure that can never be reproduced. Together they have created a new luxury harbourside address for empty nesters, young families and investors alike to live the waterfront dream at Safety Beach’s Martha Cove. Three Pillar’s Harbourside Development at Martha Cove offers visionary buyers the quite extraordinary prospect of a three-bedroom terrace home only 50 metres from the water’s edge for $429K. For beach loving Melbournians who saw their favourite peninsula as simply a holiday or retirement destination, Martha Cove at Safety Beach will come as a revelation. Offering great access to the ‘golden triangle’ of beach, future town centre and Melbourne in under an hour thanks to the new freeway (not to mention the wineries, golf courses, restaurants and seaside fun for which the Peninsula is renowned), Martha Cove transforms Safety Beach into a practical base for working families too.

Harbourside at Martha Cove combines superior, luxury design with exceptional value in the form of house-and-land packages, a range of three-bedroom single and double-storey townhouses, and four and five-bedroom luxury homes. Many have direct access to the water, marina and boardwalk, and come with their own jetty berths. Tom Hoogenbosch, Managing Director of Three Pillars, says construction began in late July and already the range and style of living on offer at Martha Cove has attracted a great mix of buyers, from Bayside Melbournians to empty nesters and young families keen to secure a home the likes of which the market will never see again. “Our four-bedroom homes from $499k offer exceptional value and with 55 already sold it’s not hard to see why we’ve been able to arrive at such fantastic results,” says Tom. “Buyers simply put down a 10 per cent deposit and don’t have to pay another cent until their home is completed. Three bedroom homes starting at $429, 950 are similarly accessible, and 80 terraced style homes cascading down from Helm Avenue to the water’s edge are attracting plenty of interest too.” All homes at Harbourside, Martha Cove offer six-star energy ratings, double garages with two or more bathrooms. Designed with residents’ present and future needs in mind, most homes cleverly consolidate the kitchen, dining and living areas on one level, alongside

service areas like the laundry and garage. Three Pillars specialise predominantly in infill developments in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Tom Hoogenbosch is a former builder who brings more than three decades experience in construction and real estate development to the Martha Cove project. Melbourne born and bred, Hoogenbosch recognised Martha Cove as prime bayside real estate. Via Three Pillars he is overseeing development of the Harbourside precincts, with Edgepoint Homes building all of the townhouses and all sales handled by Stockdale and Leggo Projects. Tom says Martha Cove represents the ideal mix of location and timing. “We saw the opportunity to reinvigorate the area and, with the recent opening of Peninsula Link, this is a perfect time to do it,” he says. “The market is on the way up and we’re offering a rare opportunity to combine lifestyle and everyday living as a realistic option. Martha Cove offers great designs, great value and great investment. With Harbourside we have four-bedroom homes priced from $499K and threebedroom homes from $429K – that is exceptional value so near to the waters edge.” The Three Pillars, Harbourside, Martha Cove sales office is located within the Martha Cove Café & Store at the corner of Anchorage Avenue and Harbourside Esplanade, Safety Beach. POPPY CULTURE When a love of fashion and design is combined with floristry, the result is a burst of artistic and creative flair called Poppy Culture. With nothing like this on the peninsula, Lauren Blundell came up with the idea for her dream business after working as a florist and realising the potential to fuse her two loves - flowers and art. “Having trained and worked in one of Melbourne’s premium florists, I was able to combine my artistic skills and had the abundance of a huge variety of quality flowers to choose from. My approach is about considering colour and texture which I guess comes from my fashion and merchandising background, and find inspiration from many sources,” Lauren says. Poppy Culture is all about utilising unique and interesting flower choices. “I do enjoy that often clients will leave it up to me to create more artistic, rather than standard, flower arrangements.” With a focus on working closely with clients, Lauren understands the importance of listening to their needs and ideas and offers creative and artistic floral and styling solutions for all occasions. “We specialise in weddings, festive occasions, celebratory and memorial events as well as corporate and hospitality subscriptions,” Lauren says. Lauren always keeps her eyes and mind open, constantly searching for interesting styling ideas for special occasions and business installations.

HOME HINTS WARMER WEATHER BRINGS MOSQUITOS! Protect your family from nasty mosquito born disease with this homemade trap.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP: Items needed: 1 cup of water , 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1 gram of yeast, 1 2-litre plastic bottle How to make: 1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.

“I am always looking for treasured finds to provide a point of difference for styling and prop hire and continued effort in sourcing and artistically supplying floral combinations for that wow factor for every bride, every occasion and every business to allow the look and feel to remain as unique as they are always,” she said.

2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.

To find out more about Poppy Culture, phone Lauren on 0414 368 741, email info@poppyculture.com.au, check out the Facebook page and poppyculture.com.au

5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes. 4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.

Digging up some fascinating ghost stories MELISSA HODGE CHATS WITH VAL WILSON WHO IS AWAKENING MORNINGTON’S PAST

Celebrate History Week in October with a tour through the Mornington Cemetery. Granted, it may not seem the obvious choice for a tour but there really couldn’t be a better way to take a huge step back in time and discover the Peninsula’s past. This guided walk through our iconic cemetery with its rich history and colourful characters will be sure to have you in historic awe. Mornington Peninsula Historical Society’s Val Wilson has such a passion for our history that she has created a website dedicated to the cemetery’s pioneer graves.

were buried there.” Val, who has recently been presented with the Heritage Award for Individual Excellence and Heritage Research and Publication by the Mornington Shire in recognition of research and development of the publication of pioneer graves at Mornington Cemetery, has certainly dug up some fascinating facts about the cemetery and its inhabitants. She said: “I did this in collaboration with Murray Adams and it was a fascinating journey. Every last one of them has a story.

She said: “Our cemetery is a fascinating resource that allows us to delve into the past and record the stories of people both famous and unknown who were closely involved in Mornington and its surrounding areas.

“I found the grave of James Fenton on one of my cemetery walks. It was in very poor condition and I wondered what the story was behind it. Mr Fenton was an acting prime minister during the Curtin government and because of the position he held in the community, we felt it was only right he was acknowledged. His grave is in the process of being restored.”

“I started researching the pioneer graves over three years ago after being involved with the cemetery walks and wanting to Mornington Historical Society’s Diane White & Valerie Wilson find out the stories behind the people who

James Fenton is not the only interesting story unearthed by Val during her research. She went on to explain: “Another one of the graves there is Kate

Strachan. She and her husband, Alexander, settled in Mornington in 1883. Alex died at their home, Horndean Moorooduc, near the junction of Strachans Road and Nepean Highway in 1891.

“In Alex Strachan’s will, he left some of his estate to Alfred Deakin MP, who was president of the Spiritualist Association. It is local legend that Kate would set an extra place at the evening meal for a ghost. Kate lived on in the house and died in 1904.” Because of people like Val Wilson, we are now awakened to a great deal of fascinating stories about our area, its predecessors and how they lived. To find out more, visit the website at www.morningtoncemetery.com or go along to the Mornington Cemetery tour on Sunday, October 27 at 1pm. Val can be contacted on 5975 2958.

INTERVIEW: Paul Worsteling He graces our television set every night taking us on his fishing adventures all over Australia but one of Paul Worstelings favorite fishing destinations is his own backyard, the Mornington Peninsula. Paul is arguably one of the most recognisable faces in recreational fishing in Australia, with an unmistakable passion and enthusiasm for his

chosen sport of fishing. Paul will contribute a local fishing column to Mornington Peninsula Magazine from this issue. Born in Dandenong, he lived in Melbourne’s South East Suburbs for most of his life. He now proudly resides on the Mornington

His media worked started in his late teens with local radio updates on community radio 3SER. This progressed to a co-hosting a 2 hour radio program on the same network. Paul’s quick witted style and knowledge has seen him reporting live on over 20 other networks nationwide. He currently co-hosts Melbourne’s popular Friday night Fishing Show on 3AW. Paul’s television career started with guest appearances on Escape with ET (Channel 9) and Rex Hunt Fishing Adventures (Channel 7). This led to a four year stint as Rex Hunt’s

co-host, until the show ended and Paul started the popular IFISH program on the TEN network. IFISH with Tackleworld is now regarded by many as Australia’s premier fishing program, receiving Logie Nominations in 2012 and 2013. Paul has regularly contributed articles to numerous fishing magazines and is the author of multiple books containing fishing techniques, rigs and must catch fish. Paul is actively involved in the community and enthusiastically assists on Mates Day (taking disabled people who love fishing for a day on the bay) and Kids Come Try Fishing days where up to 500 young kids receive fishing tuition. TEAM OF OUR TIME JUMPER CELEBRATES MORNINGTON FOOTBALL CLUB’S RICH HISTORY Celebrating its 125th anniversary, Mornington Football Club did it in style at the Mornington Racing Club. Almost 250 people attended the event where the “Team of Our Time” was announced and players past and present mingled to celebrate a milestone in the club’s rich history.

examined each player nominated to create the best team of the last 50 years. Norm went on to explain: “We looked at doing a team of the century as that’s what most clubs do but decided against it as, even though we were established in 1888, we didn’t start playing competition football until the 1920’s.”

Mornington Football Club President, Norm Robinson, said the night could not have gone better.

Work on the “Team of Our Time” started this April with club members, Mark Paganoni and Michael Wunderly, taking the reins.

He said: “We had just made the finals by beating Pines so everyone was on a high. It was a great mix of older members and current players and the Team of Our Time framed jumper looked awesome.

The Team of Our Time jumper is available to buy unframed for $89 or framed for $289 - and a DVD presentation dating back to pre-WWI put together by Jake Stevens, is also on sale for $20.

“The jumper is made up of names of players with all the nominees, premiership players, captains, coaches, life members, every best and fairest player, and, of course, the team of our time.”

Norm said: “Whether you are into footy or not, you will love the DVD for the history of the Mornington area itself.”

Choosing the candidates was a time-consuming task for the selection committee, who painstakingly

Sportingbet Peninsula Cup Day:

Spring racing, Peninsula style! If you’re interested in a more relaxed day of Spring racing, you’ll be delighted at what the Sportingbet Peninsula Cup Day at idyllic Mornington Racecourse will offer. Sunday, November 3 is the date set aside for this annual event that epitomises spring racing - Peninsula style. Hordes of pleasure-seeking racegoers and fashionistas make a beeline for Mornington for what is an essential part of the Melbourne Cup long weekend. What culminates is a lively buzz across a picturesque setting where racing and fashion are celebrated in equal measures. The feature of the day on the track is the $80,000 Sportingbet Peninsula Cup, a 1600-metre test with an honour roll boasting many a quality galloper. And the battles off the turf are just as hotly-contested as that on it: that is, courtesy of the Grand Hotel

Fashions on the Field, where over $40,000 in prizes is up for grabs. Comprising four categories – Stylish Ladies 18-40 Years, Stylish Ladies 40+ Years, Stylish Gentlemen and Fashion Duos, it is one of the most sought-after fashion events of the Spring. What’s more, if you’re keen on a more formal or upmarket afternoon, the course’s array of hospitality and dining options enables racegoers to enjoy the day in style. Book your dining or hospitality package by contacting Mornington Racing Club on 5975 3310 or email info@mrc.net.au. You can find out more about Sportingbet Peninsula Cup Day – whether it’s the racing, the fashion or the dining – at www. melbourneracingclub.net.au. Entry is $20 for adults and $12 for concession pass holders, with children under 15 admitted free.

TEAM BAREFOOT CONTINUES TO GAIN MOMENTUM One of the beauties about the sport of triathlon is its age equality. It is one of the few sports that caters for age group categories in five year increments and where everyone has a chance of doing well in their category against others of similar age. Apart from Team Barefoot’s sponsored elite team is their age group squad which has doubled in size since last season with many people having signed up to do the Melbourne Ironman on 24th March 2014. With the success of the past two Melbourne Ironman Triathlons, Team Barefoot coach and manager, Stephen Foster, has had a large number of enquiries about training. “Ironman is no laughing matter and definitely not like your local 10km fun run.” said Stephen. “There is some serious training and preparation needed to successfully complete one of these events.” Ironman consists of a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42.2km run. “I’ve had a number of new athletes who have signed up to the event who have never run more than 10km in their lives including our new major sponsor Scott Carson of Platinum Swimming Pools. Some of them may not have realized at first what they were getting themselves into but all are progressing well and on target. The secret here is patience and plenty of it.”

It takes months of gradual progression in training to give the body time to adapt to the stresses of one of the toughest one day endurance events on the planet. Stephen added: “Training them too much too soon could risk injury and or illness. Racing Ironman is different from racing short course distances like the distance used at the Olympic Games. “Ironman is about pacing yourself and getting the right nutrition into you. The professionals are taking approximately eight hours, the elite age groupers approximately nine hours and the cut off is at midnight, 17 hours after the official start at Frankston Pier.” Last year, Stephen was at the finish line to greet each of his athletes. The exhilaration on their faces was reward and motivation enough. Next year, he will be on the start line competing as well in his 7th Ironman distance event. “When you cross the finish line, it’s like you’ve conquered your own Mt Everest. It definitely changes your life.” Pictured: Stephen with new major sponsors, Scott Carson and Gareth Mulholland of Platinum Swimming Pools - SCOTT GRIMSTER

MORNINGTON PENINSULA MAGAZINE • FISHING REPORT • EVERY MONTH Large schools of Australian Salmon are patrolling between Frankston and Portsea. The diving birds are a dead giveaway and Arma metal lures in sizes 25g to 40g are doing the most damage. Paul, Cristy and Jet fished with local rep Wayne Friebe and had a great afternoon fishing off Fisherman’s Beach catching 20 salmon in no time at all. Calamari are still in great numbers right the way along the peninsula. Boat based anglers are getting plenty of bait sized squid from Frankston through to Mornington. Land based anglers are finding the most consistent results from Mornington and Blairgowrie piers. IKA sized 2.0 and 2.5 sized jigs working best. Snapper reports are improving with fish getting more and more consistent by the week. 18 to 20 meters off Mornington is a great place to start, with

a whopping 9.2kg fish coming in earlier this month. Pilchards and fresh calamari being the early go to bait. THE REST OF THE BAY: Much like the peninsula salmon and snapper dominate the reports. The salmon schools seem to heading north along the bay so keep an eye out around Mordialloc and Black Rock as it wouldn’t surprise me if they turn up there in a big way very soon. Snapper are fairly consistent out from Carrum with a quality 7.6kg fish taken in 20m. As the water temperature rises the snapper fishing will only get better. WESTERNPORT: Snapper have also started to fire early in Westerport. Quite a few fish have been taken from Joe’s Island and Lysaghts. Staff member Mark Keaveny of Tackle

World Mornington also got a couple of nice fish to 4kg off Corinella. Fresh calamari, the number one bait by far. Plenty of massive calamari are up on the Tyabb Bank and further down towards Hastings with the bigger 3.0 to 3.5 IKA jigs working best. There are plenty of Barracouta around the port at the moment so now is the time to put a few in the freezer as they are amongst the better snapper baits going around. For the full MASSIVE fishing report log onto www.ifish.com.au. You can also text your fishing reports to our reports hotline on 0427 693 759. Keep the reports coming and head on down to Tackle World Mornington to say Hi! Team Tackle World Mornington.

As a child growing up on the Peninsula, Joel Norford used to host a JJJ Hottest 100 party on Australia Day at his parent’s farm but he never expected it would turn into an event that would soon help people, animals and conservation on the other side of the world. At just 18 years of age, Joel’s social conscience kicked into gear big time after his first overseas jaunt to a third world country, working in south east Asia with organisations predominantly affected by war. Although confronting for Joel, it started a ripple effect that would see him taking up the crusade to help in other regions as well. Joel said: “During my first trip to India in 2006 I met a street kid, Raja and he was my little buddy who lived in a beautiful place called Hampi. “When I went back the next time, his father had died and he was taking care of his seven siblings - a brother and six sisters. “That was when the idea for the first music festival came about - ‘Raja’s Hottest 100’ - that I ran at my parent’s farm in Moorooduc. We had 100 people there and raised $2,500.” Over the next couple of years, with a passion for helping the people in Hampi, Joel helped set up an organisation in India called the Hampi Children’s Trust (HCT), running two music festivals called ‘Hope in Hampi.’ Still running today, HCT helps educate children in Hampi, helping them to attend schools, providing the kids with school uniforms, nutritious food and materials they need for their education. He said: “It still has 55 kids there and is now being run with the help of a previous street kid.” When Joel saw what they could do to help in India, he decided to get involved in another worthy cause started by his mate, another Peninsula lad, Damien Mander. Joel went on to explain: “Damien was launching the IAPF (International Anti Poaching Foundation) and I realised I could help him out and before I knew it, RAW was born - an acronym for Respect All Wildlife, with a philosophy that works - act local, think global.” RAW has since provided support for critical conservation issues and actively contributed to biodiversity conservation

locally and overseas, building a close relationship with IAPF. A strong passion for music and the arts has seen the emergence of the RAW Music Festival, that has attracted international and local artists and raised thousands of dollars over the past six years. “In 2011 we held the music festival at Mornington Racing Club with two stages and about 20 acts. The following year at Morning Star was also amazing with 10 acts during the day. “RAW raised money for IAPF, supporting Damien and his army in the war against poaching and the trade of wildlife.” RAW is completely organised and run by volunteers with a focus on making a vital contribution to the environment, conservation and animal rights. They have even planted 5,000 trees on the Peninsula to offset the RAW events. Whether it’s family upbringing, Buddhist ideology, or just magnanimous personality, it seems pretty clear that Joel and many other Peninsula people are making an enormous impact on a global scale. RAW is constantly looking for like-minded people, businesses and organisations to help join together to fight these critical issues. Summing up, Joel said: “We have huge plans for the future with our motto ‘act local, think global’ and invite people to be part of the change and help fight the conservation war now.” Those interested can learn more about RAW by visiting the website at www.raw.org.au - MELISSA HODGE

scents, plain vanilla and tropical scents.”

Started up by local lady, Leah Dowel, Indigo Flame Soy Candles are hand-poured with love and come in over 30 sumptuous scents.

“These candles will make the whole house smell beautiful, and are the safest around children as the wax doesn’t get super hot and they are not breathing in any chemicals.”

Leah, whose business continues to gain popularity, said: “I absolutely love candles and was buying so many of them that a friend suggested I make them myself. “At first I thought of it as a hobby, but it has really taken off in the last 18 months. “I sell them at markets like Red Hill every second month and the Mornington market every month. We do candle parties as well and I sell them online.” Because fragrance is so important, Leah has made sure that her Indigo Flame Soy Candles are strongly scented and added: “There’s nothing worse than a candle that doesn’t smell, so all my candles have a distinct scent. “The food scents are my favourites, blueberry muffin in particular, but there is something for every mood from sweet florals to food

All candles are hand-poured with 100 per cent natural and eco-friendly products and triple scented for the strongest fragrance possible.

Soy wax is a favourite of environmentally conscious consumers, made from hydrogenated soybean oil, it is biodegradable. “Soy candles are stronger smelling and throw off more scent than regular candles. They are cleaner burning than paraffin candles and really ecofriendly,” Leah added. JOIN THE BIG BEACH CLEANUP Walking your dog along the beach or foreshore is a relaxing way to spend time but for Peninsula resident, BJ, it has become less enjoyable with all the rubbish she sees scattered along the beach. So began the ”Big Beach Clean Up”, an initiative encouraging people to get friends and family together to have some fun, while at the same time cleaning up the rubbish in and around their local beach and foreshore area.

and positive way,” BJ added, who has already started doing clean-ups along the beach. “It’s exciting because we have the opportunity to fix the problem by collectively doing a little bit whenever we can. We usually head down for about two hours but it can take just 20 minutes to an hour of your time, meeting like-minded people and effecting a little positive change. “Imagine if there were more people regularly helping. What a wonderful sight that would be.”

The “Big Beach Clean Up” has aligned with Clean Up Australia, but with the added bonus of local incentives for individuals and businesses that include prize draws and a proposed “Community Leader” program, encouraging people to lead an event at their local “After moving to the Peninsula, I noticed way too much glass and rubbish beach. particularly, in the grassland of the foreshore, not to mention everything Talking about how extra support would help the initiative, BJ added: washing up onto the shore. “At this stage, the thing we really need is Council and local business “When I lived in NSW, my dog dug a hole in the sand, stuck her head in to take a sniff and a buried junkie’s needle stabbed her in the eyeball. It was horrifying to see how much she suffered as a result.

“I decided that rather than complain about it, I’d try to encourage one person at a time to help me to clean it up,” said BJ, who has even found asbestos in Rosebud and another area that took three adults two hours to clean near the McCrae lighthouse. The “Big Beach Clean Up” is a great opportunity for locals to get together and help look after our precious beaches. BJ said: “As we know, there are enormous threats to our oceans and marine life due to pollution, toxins, chemical spills, oil disasters, rubbish, naval testing, marine vessel traffic and much more.

“We may not be able to help with many of those, but as a community, we can get together and clean up our beach and foreshore area in a fun

Trash ... or treasure? In light of October being “Buy Nothing New” month, people around the peninsula have searched through cupboards and drawers to dig up trash that might be treasure. For those who had wondered whether that quirky item they had inherited was worth anything, The Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery recently played host to an Appraisal Day in early October at the Dromana Community Hall. Experienced and highly sought after, Warren Joel, was on hand to examine items brought in by the public and provided verbal appraisals. Over the past 35 years Warren has built up a great wealth of knowledge and expertise in the valuation of fine arts. He has handled items for private collectors, leading art galleries, the government’s Cultural Gift Program, the National Trust and valued the entire collection of the Australian National Museum.

MOUNT ELIZA ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION Mount Eliza’s annual art exhibition returns this year on October 25th to 27th with an incredible collection of new talent. Hosted by Mount Eliza North Primary School, the exhibition provides visitors with a unique opportunity to discover and purchase original and affordable art in a relaxed, community based setting. Art aficionados can look forward to browsing an extensive selection of traditional and contemporary painting, jewellery, photography, textiles, sculpture and ceramics, while enjoying a glass of the region’s famous chardonnay or pinot noir. The exhibition fosters local talent whilst maintaining the high calibre of exhibits that has become synonymous with this exhibition. Veronica Holland: Feature Artist Veronica lives and works in Christmas Hills, a bush haven on the edge
of the Yarra Valley. Her large and colourful paintings can be dynamic or gently whimsical, but generally bring a smile to the observer. Describing her work as “art to live with”, Veronica’s cheerful paintings are often based on things that are a source of personal amusement. “I mainly paint people being people, and love painting voluptuous ‘Wonder Women’ who are happy in their own being and in control of their lives”. Holland has also been working on a series inspired by music. “I like the energy and passion in music, and the OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2013 (23)

stories behind the performance. I try to make you see the music,” she explains. Russ Brebner: Feature Sculptor Russ started sculpting in 2005 when he found some metal in the shed. “I purchased a welder and it started from there.” He explains. “I am a collector. Each piece of metal on its own was nothing special, but when I welded them together they became a robot called Bert.” A highlight for Russ was in 2012 when he was selected for the ‘Mali in the City’ program at the Royal Melbourne Zoo. “Thousands of metal pieces were sculpted together to create an armor over a fiberglass elephant body.” Russ explains. ‘Rusty Mali’ was on display in the city for 6 weeks before being moved to the Royal Melbourne Zoo for the 150th birthday celebration before being sold at auction with all proceeds going to environmental programs. “It was my proudest moment as a sculptor.” Gala Opening: Friday October 25th Limited to 500 guests, the gala opening is a much anticipated social event on the Peninsula with live music, gourmet finger food and an exceptional selection of wines. As well as having the first opportunity to purchase works, guests are able to bid on unique items including paintings and jewellery in an auction hosted by Hockingstuart Real Estate. INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS

Bourke appointed AFL South East RGM The AFL South East Commission has announced the appointment of Jeremy Bourke to the role of Regional General Manager (RGM).

A pilot mentoring program engaging the Peninsula’s young and emerging artists has been received with enthusiastic accolades in recent weeks.

AFL South East Commission Chairman, Mr Jeff Kimber, said Mr Bourke was appointed from a strong field of applicants.

iConnect – Young Artists in the Park is a pilot program delivered in partnership with Parks Victoria, The People & Parks Foundation and the Mornington Peninsula Shire to inspire creative expression and wellbeing through connection with nature. It culminated in an exhibition of the students’ work that will now be relocated to Mornington Library for extended viewing.

MacKay, helped us connect these kids to nature, and this in turn helps the community to connect with the amazing emerging talent we have here on our doorstep.”

Undertaken at Point Nepean, the program worked with students from Rosebud Secondary College and two local professional artists through interactive sessions in a natural environment. Over 10 weeks, the program fostered the growth and development of high quality arts in the fields of painting and photography by providing a mentoring base of collaboration, support, guidance and expertise.

She said: “This grass roots exhibition has provided a perfect platform to nurture emerging artists and connect them with someone who has already been on that journey.

Mentoring is one of the areas that the Victorian Government sees as vital to young people staying engaged in education and training. Ranger in Charge, Victor Teoh, said: “While the program provided local youth with access to resources and one-on-one skills development through the mentorship process, the concluding exhibition of their works at Point Nepean was a fitting way to recognise their journey.” “Working in partnership with the People and Parks Foundation, the Mornington Peninsula Shire Youth Services and two established local artists, painter Miodrag Jankovic and photographer Matthew

( 26 The peninsula’s funky SQUARE magazine

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor, Councillor Lynn Bowden, acknowledges that the response from the community towards the program has been heartening.

“We are very excited to be able to extend this journey for the participants by moving the iConnect exhibition from Point Nepean National Park to the foyer of Mornington Library for October.” The program also provided inspiration and skill nurturing though gallery sessions and concluded in an exhibition held at Point Nepean in July at which artists, partner staff and mentors exhibited their works. Proving to be an inspiring journey for all those involved, children from 8 to 16 had the opportunity to discover artistic and creative talents, while their mentors and teachers were given the opportunity to make a difference in these young lives. The works will feature at Mornington Library from October 5th to 31st and entry is free.

Speaking about the appointment, Mr Kimber said: “The Commission is very excited to have someone with the passion and knowledge that Jeremy can bring to the role. “Jeremy has a proven track record as a strategically-minded football administrator having previously worked with the VAFA in a football operations role and more recently as the CEO of the Northern Football League where he worked diligently to change the culture and public perception of the Northern Football League which is now viewed as a professional Community Football League.” Mr Bourke said he was looking forward to the exciting challenges ahead and identified that he has a desire to work in collaboration with all stakeholders within the growing region to ensure that the game grows both on and off the field. He said: “Having worked in the industry in a number of roles, I have seen the passion and commitment local administrators have for leagues and clubs and I look forward to engaging with these people to help

the region move forward in the best possible way.” Mr Kimber said the position of RGM was created after the AFL’s 2011 review of football in country Victoria. “The review found that football needs a change of governance structures to provide greater strategic focus, more effective decision making at a regional level and an investment in resources directly in regions. “The RGM role will oversee the development of a strategic plan for the South East region and report directly to the AFL South East Commission. “Over the next few weeks and months, Jeremy will be spending time meeting leagues, clubs and supporters to hear about the issues affecting our region.” Mr Bourke, who holds a Masters of Business (Sports Management), in addition to his relevant work experience, will commence his role as the new RGM on November 11.

A TOUCH OF AFFLUENZA? When we throw something away… where exactly is ‘away’?? October is designated ‘Buy Nothing New Month’ and has been brought about to make us rethink about the things we buy and why we buy them. Considering the alternative options that are better for us, our wallets, people and the planet, the scheme aims to awaken our recycling senses for the good of all. Now in its third year in Australia, Buy Nothing New Month celebrates sustainable alternatives of the conscious collaborative, new consumption movements like second-hand shopping, swapping, renting, sharing, borrowing, recycling and up-cycling. Attracting pledgers from all around the world, when you take part in the Buying Nothing New scheme, you will also notice savings, with some pledgers reporting savings of around $1000 a month.

A TRUE PENINSULA PICKER Any given weekend, while most people are relaxing, you can be assured that Jason Richardson is not sleeping in. No way. Not since he discovered the thrill of picking… For those who are foreign to the practice, all over the Peninsula there are people getting up in the small hours of Saturday and Sunday to hunt down the best bargains at garage sales and vintage shops. Once armed with an array of artefacts, they recycle them at their own market stall or sell online.

have had is hot right now.”

“We agreed on a price and I went back home to research the plate, only to find it was a 1964 Washington Pottery plate worth up to 50 to 70GBP ($85 - $120AU) on a Beatles collector site. That was my first pick and I was hooked.”

He said: “One miserable Saturday, all the markets were cancelled and there was nowhere to pick, so I killed some time at my mother-in-law’s.

For the next six months, Jason became entrenched in the subculture they call “Pickers”, until he finally had enough items to do his very own market stall and took on the moniker as “The Man in the Hat”.

After being a regular viewer of shows like ‘American Pickers’, Jason realised that this was something he would like to do.

Jason added: “The first market I did was the Red Hill Vintage and Collectibles Fair. All I wanted to do was sell just one thing and after a few minutes of unpacking, a lady came up and bought an old milking stool I had, and I was off!”

He said: “American Pickers was one of those shows that I always came across when I was channel hopping just before going to bed.

After 12 months of picking, Jason’s philosophy is simple - “Never buy anything you’re not happy to be stuck with.”

“I would watch it for a few minutes, then after a while, I made a point of watching the show every Wednesday night and it became a regular thing.

He also says that condition is the key. “It’s important for things to be in good condition, bright colours are good and a lot of the stuff that our mum’s would

“I used to collect a lot as a kid and thought what could I collect now? Then one Sunday at the Bittern Market, I

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2013 (23)

came across a lady selling a Beatles biscuit plate that I thought was really interesting, as The Beatles had only toured here once, almost 50 years ago.

Jason definitely believes in “picking karma” and says he’s had his best picks when freestyling garage sales.

“When I pulled out of her street I saw a sign saying “Yard Sale” that had just been put up, so naturally I called in and I found four lovely crystal beer glasses, a beautiful rose-glass decanter, a silver plated cruet set and a magnificent copper coloured whisky tray dating back about 50 years.” The art of picking can take on many forms. For some, it’s scouring op-shops and vintage stalls, for others it’s the garage sale circuit. Some, like Jason, tend to only ‘pick’ in the one area while others will venture all over the Peninsula and beyond. One thing is for sure, whatever the method, pickers will tell you there’s nothing like the thrill of finding a unique item, steeped in history and just waiting to be re-discovered and brought back to life. - MELISSA HODGE

It all started in a bid to rid us all of “Affluenza” - a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety and waste, resulting from the dogged pursuit of more. It challenges us to think twice about what we really need and look at alternatives. When you pledge to buy nothing new, you still get to buy the essentials like food, drink, medicine and hygiene products but commit to borrowing, bartering and buying only pre-loved items. By trying some (or all) of these tips on how to stay on the straight and narrow when you pledge to buy nothing new, you can be well on your way to helping towards a brighter future. Op shops and second hand stores – there’s plenty around the Peninsula with shops like the Brotherhood of St Laurence. There’s also no shortage of vintage shops with a quirky edge. Buy second-hand goods online. When it comes to gifts why not give an experience like a hot air balloon ride or tickets to a concert or a surprise party in the park? Don’t shop – swap. Hold your own swap shop where everyone brings five things cluttering their home that they don’t use and watch as one man’s trash becomes another man’s treasure. Re-use, recycle, make stuff, alter stuff, buy used, donate quality old stuff, get free stuff, borrow, barter and trade, just like they did in the old days. Repair, don’t replace. Take up a hobby instead of shopping to alleviate boredom. Can YOU take on the challenge…? Cultivate Inner Peace at Shiva

On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th November, the Shiva Ashram on the Mornington Peninsula, will open its six acres of beautiful gardens to the general public as part of Open Gardens Australia.

From barren paddocks and burned out grasses 17 years ago, the grounds have become a series of mystical and spirituallyinspired gardens. Home to Swami Shankarananda, director of the ashram, since 1996 and currently to 40 ashramites or residential students, the gardens have flourished along with the work carried out by Swamiji. “Maintained by volunteers, the gardens are a true labour of love,” said Swamiji. “Nature and spirituality are one: through nature we experience harmony, joy and peace.

circular walk includes gardens, handmade mosaic tiled artworks and quotes representing the five major faiths of Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. Plantings and the colour palette of each garden symbolise the particular faith represented. The gardens are the perfect place to sit and enjoy, to contemplate and meditate and to soak up the calming and restorative atmosphere. Head gardener for over four years, Tulsi Christopherson said, “The Ashram really is a beautiful place to work. The gardens are well kept all year round but leading up to Open Gardens, we plant more annuals and bulbs. The garden I am working on at the moment is one of my favourites. It is a goddess mandala or symbolic circle, and the area is beautiful to work in”. Tulsi works 4 days a week maintaining the 6-acre gardens, with 4 or 5 volunteers daily.

“Meditation is to seek inner harmony and peace, and when you have outer circumstances full of beauty and tranquillity, it supports meditation. Some of the most beautiful gardens I’ve seen have been attached to ashrams and monasteries. Gardens outwardly express the inner harmony of the soul.”

“We get fabulous feedback from the public who love all the deities throughout the garden, and we make sure the plantings reflect and embody each deity. The woman who manages our interfaith garden carried out extensive research on each religion to determine the most appropriate colours and plants for each.”

The gardens are a conduit for the Ashram’s main purpose: to provide a peaceful sanctuary where people are inspired to find their deeper nature. They include a Zen Garden, a beautiful, Japanese inspired garden named the ‘Garden of Enlightenment’, a native garden honouring the Boon wurrung, the original owners of the Mornington Peninsula area, and a permaculture vegetable garden that supplies a wonderful array of organic vegetables. There are spiritually inspired symbolic gardens created from cottage beddings, mature gums and cypresses, together with a small waterfall, creek and pond.

The gardens have matured noticeably since last year’s Open Gardens weekend and there have been a few new additions including fledgling woodland at the front of the property. “Visitors will definitely notice a couple of changes this year”, said Tulsi. Come along and enjoy some of the open garden highlights including lunch, Devonshire tea, free introductory yoga and meditation sessions and live music. Interactive app RACE IN FOR helps young STAND-OUT LOOKS children think

The Spring Racing Carnival is gathering pace to a gallop and the perfect platform to showcase the very best of racewear classics has to be the Chadstone Fashion Stakes. One of the highlights on the Australian fashion calendar, the Chadstone Fashion Stakes has found its winner - Brodie Worrell – who has shown that gold with a hint of colour is right on trend. Brodie had her eye on a vintage Scanlan and Theodore dress from Bella Once Loved but it wasn’t until she went to the Mornington Millinery night two nights before the Chadstone Fashion Stakes that she decided to buy it. Lisa of Lady of Leisure Millinery then teamed up with Brodie to create a beautiful headpiece that incorporated gold and red flowers. Brodie said: “This headpiece was miraculously made overnight and worked perfectly with the outfit.

“All the fuss, however, has been drawn to the accessories - a red block colour Lego clutch and red heels with gorgeous gold detail that complimented the dress.” Brodie, who now goes onto compete as a finalist at the Caulfield Cup, says that wearing vintage or pre-loved clothing is an easy and affordable way to be unique. Elegance and style with current trends, slicked back hair and bold red lips were the key elements of Brodie’s winning look. Mornington Peninsula’s own children’s author and illustrator, Julie Davey, has launched a new mobile app encouraging positive approaches to problem solving and goal setting in young children. The First5 app is an interactive app providing children with step by step coaching to shift their focus from problems to possibilities, and frame their day more positively. “The app assists children with emotional re-framing techniques and suggesting positive outlooks, visualising approaches and coping mechanisms which encourage for parents, teachers, and specialist staff as they conflict resolution and personal self-worth,” says Julie, who is a strong advocate for helping kids feel better address more challenging issues and concerns. This well established support program has been widely about themselves. The hero feature of the app is the ‘Possibili-Tree’ as received in Australian schools and well regarding by educators and youth counsellors. users are encouraged to ‘Turn worries into wishes, and problems into possibili-trees’. Inviting the young user to record their personal challenges onto leaves of the Possilbili-Tree the program demonstrates examples of how to manage problems and work through steps to consider more positive outcomes. With its bright colours, simple graphics and interactive programming the Fab First 5 app is highly effective for mid to upper primary school users, teaching and mental health practitioners, counsellors and parents. The app’s title refers to the premise that everyone can achieve positive possibilities from a positive outlook in the first 5 minutes of their day. The app can also work in tandem with an optional support program The Fabulous First 5 Minutes Home pack with tailored resources and programs which can be purchased on-line and adds value

“For children to thrive, it helps if they can release worries, giving them the ‘head-space‘to consider other possibilities and solutions. I really believe this app helps kids, and parents become more responsible, resilient and conscious of opportunities available to them,” she said. “Many kids feel more comfortable communicating through the screen, and the app is an ideal tool to enhance the teaching and counselling of experienced staff and parents as they reach out to kids and work through issues together. The app allows for a personalised approach in addressing the challenges children face in their own lives so that they feel empowered with logical steps and visualising approaches.” The First5 app is available from iTunes from October 15th or by visiting the author on www. Beckie says “We all love to look and feel our best however there are times throughout our lives we don’t feel like this is achievable, often for reasons beyond our control. In light of breast cancer awareness month this October, I videoed a shout out asking the women of the Mornington Peninsula to nominate a loved one/ friend who has been diagnosed with Breast cancer, to tell me in 25 words or less why/ how i could lift the spirits of their nominee.” Beckie has had so many emails from fabulous supportive people with amazing stories to tell about their friends, mums and sisters’ Breast Cancer Journeys, that choosing one was a difficult decision. “The team and I narrowed it down to two women and we decided to make a first and second prize pool. So it is with great honour that I announce the winners,” says Beckie. “In first place woman I am gifting a total styling package to Emma Cloak, a mother of 3. PRIMROSE FAIR A SUCCESS FOR ALL The very first Primrose Fair on Saturday October 5, was blessed with good weather, fabulous stall holders, and great coffee. “We were thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response from the public” says Lara Tweedie. “Our stall holders couldn’t stop remarking on how lovely and chatty all the Peninsula locals were on the day. As organisers it was incredibly rewarding to see everyone enjoying themselves.” “One of the big successes of the day was the pop up café by Grazen. Corey Fowler and his team did an amazing job and we all are looking forward to creating more Primrose magic at our Christmas event” says Marlee Horobin. Primrose Fair will take place at The Cloisters, Toorak College, Mt Eliza on 14th December 2013 between 10am and 4pm. Entry is free. Visit www.primrosefair.com.au for more details.

Spring into Spring with Sarah After suffering from chronic back pain for years, Sarah Angelo tried every treatment out there. But to no avail. It wouldn’t go away. Until she discovered BodyTalk - a simple and effective holistic therapy that re-synchronizes the body’s energy systems to enable them to operate as nature intended.

NEW BOUTIQUE IN MT ELIZA

“My pain disappeared in the first session” said Sarah, who has now been a BodyTalk practitioner for three years.

“The BodyTalk system is literally a communication with the body. It takes all the best bits from kinesiology, Reiki, Eastern and energy medicine and aspects of Western medicine and puts them all together under one umbrella. It can be used on its own or can complement other forms of healthcare alternative or conventional. “Some people have a BodyTalk session because they have physical symptoms like back pain or hayfever. Others are looking for relief from stress and anxiety.” “We don’t medicate with BodyTalk so it works well with other modalities and brings attention to your body and what’s going on inside it. “Frequently we get great physical results with headaches, hayfever, pain and anxiety and then

BodyTalk works with the philosophy that the body is designed to heal itself. When all parts and systems of the body communicate with eachother, healing happens naturally. Stress can cause communication breakdowns, resulting in discomfort and disease. BodyTalk identifies these breakdowns and uses a light tapping technique to restore communication, helping the body to heal itself. Sarah added: “It is safe, effective and noninvasive, great for all ages from babies to the elderly. “The best part is when the person has that ‘a-ha’ moment – when they are suddenly awakened and the world looks different.” For Spring, BodyTalk Mornington is having a special focusing on the Veltheim method of lymphatic drainage whose benefits include ridding the body of toxins, excess fluid, less aches and pains, emotional release and even losing weight. THE DECK OAKS DAY

Who doesn’t love an excuse to frock up in your finest racewear, enjoy a day of fashion, fun and bubbles, all mixed in with a few races? Ladies of the peninsula, this year The Deck is the venue for an exclusive Oaks Day event on Thursday November 7th, sponsored by local business with some proceeds going towards “Weekend to end Women’s Cancer”.

TOP IT OFF For milliners like Felicity Northeast, the Spring Racing Carnival starts months before the races with the creation of a new collection each season. Every year, Felicity presents a 60-piece collection, inspired by the latest trends in design and material and in her Mt Eliza studio, surrounded by feathers, ribbons, hatboxes and handmade flowers, she works tirelessly to create unique headpieces for each client. “This year, the new theme is lacework which is hand crocheted,” she says pointing to a widebrimmed hat with a lace crocheted brim. “Architectural and structured pieces are also big this season with the trend for structured suits and fitted dresses. The vintage braid continues to be popular but now I have started to combine two colours into a vintage braid twist.” As for trims, Felicity says the Japanese silk material still works beautifully, while flowers are becoming more architectural to complement the fitted look in outfits. She added: “It is important that the headpiece does not overpower the outfit. If you have a large extravagant hat, the outfit should be kept simple and vice versa. “And colours are very big this season, with lots of reds and burnt oranges, as well as lime green and yellow in different shades. “Floral prints are big so I have been making plenty of flowers for that extra edge.” With her focus on the unique style of the wearer, Felicity uses her creative flair to incorporate a client’s own ideas to tailor beautifully sculptured hats for any occasion. Her millinery creations feature everything from handmade flowers to embroidery and lacework, with a particular focus on what suits the individual. Felicity Northeast Millinery can be bought directly from her Mt Eliza studio or you will find another unique range at Fiona’s of Mornington. The brainchild of Dr Manish Bhasin, Advantage Medical Centre is the fifth project in as many years, offering patients on the Mornington Peninsula bulk billing medical and affordable dental care. Other Advantage Medical Centres include Crib Point, Tooradin, Baxter, and Rosebud. As one of the practicing doctors, Dr Bhasin says they all have special interests in different streams of medicine. “Dr Brian West specializes in pain management, while Dr Dipankar Chakraborty’s special interest is obstetrics and gynecology. We also have ex paediatrician, Dr Jitendra Kumar here for child health care.” Dr Bhasin, whose specialty is diabetic care, says it is most important to meet the need of the area in terms of affordable and ongoing care for all sections of society. “There was no bulk-billing in the area and we bulk-bill everybody. If you empower the patient

with education, it provides better outcomes for their health, so we make sure we spend that extra time explaining as well as diagnosing,” Dr Bhasin said. “We have had very good response already. Patients are grateful and thankful we have opened here especially pensioners and young working class. We are taking on new patients, so just ring up to make an appointment.” Advantage Medical Centres are also actively involved in teaching and training new doctors. “We get new doctors from Melbourne University, medical students, and get GP training doctors as well, so part of my other job is training.” After working in England for many years, Dr Bhasin came to the peninsula, loved it and has never looked back. Advantage Medical Centre is at 1297 Nepean Highway, Mt Eliza, 9787 3036, 337 Stony Point Road, Crib Point, 5983 0022, 57 Baxter Tooradin Road, Baxter, 5971 1110, and 1541 Point Nepean Road, Rosebud West, 5982 0011.

Go Grandriders – Seniors Week 2013 What do you get when you take 17 Taiwanese senior citizens on a 13 day motorcycle adventure around Taiwan? A fantastic feature film called ‘Go Grandriders’ which screened on the Mornington Peninsula on October 9th. As part of the celebrations of Seniors Week, the film was presented by the Mornington Peninsula Shire, in partnership with the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival and the Peninsula Advisory Committee for Elders, to illustrate the shire’s commitment to promoting and advancing positive ageing and human rights.

The movie dispels stereotypes, and follows these riders who are determined to prove that age is just a number. Most of the riders in the film are aged in their eighties and, unwilling to surrender to their ailing bodies, these daredevil riders take on everything from fatigue and arthritis to cancer and heart disease to defend their right to ride. Go Grandriders screened to audiences in Rye and Mornington and entry was by gold coin donation.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU We bulk bill in order to provide excellent professional and affordable health care to all sections of community.

CAPTURE PRECIOUS MOMENTS There’s no more special time than the birth of a newborn baby, and photographer, Niki Whitfield-Hart understands how important it is to capture those precious moments with her business, Naturalis Oculus Photography. A mother of two, Niki specialises in newborn and child photography, creating the perfect setting to bring your brand new baby and hopefully snap some pictures of mum and dad as well. “I love photographing newborns, and usually the initial consultation starts while the mum is pregnant. We book the photo session for when the bub is around 10 days old, as I can get to capture all those little details that seem to disappear with each day,” says Niki, who is one of the only specialists in newborn photography on the peninsula. “The photos I produce are very magical with an ethereal quality to them. I use all natural elements, taking inspiration from nature. There’s lots of fresh flowers in my photos, and the fabrics and knits I use are hand-spun by myself. I also use lots of vintage fabrics,” says Niki whose photography has a distinctly earthy quality.

CREATING SPACES TO INSIRE YOUR CHILDREN The word on the playground is that there is an up and coming sophisticated, vibrant, interior designer - who channels the essence of a child’s creativity to allow the inspiration of decoration and design to flow. A. Rose Interior Inspirations would love to start weaving colours and themes throughout your child’s space to create functional living environments for the little people in your world. Whether the space is a nursery, bedroom, playroom or outdoor play area, Liz Csapo, founder of A. Rose Interior Inspirations, believes the pure essence of your child can be expressed throughout her designs. She said: “Each age of a child has great qualities and great challenges. Throughout their journey in life, each child develops their independence as their personalities become more complex. “This is a wonderful attribute to have, I encourage my own child to imagine with all her mind, believe with all her heart and achieve with ALL her might. “I adapt this theory when gathering information and inspiration from families and their children if age appropriate, prior to preparing a design concept for their space.” Families who are overloaded with interior

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2013 (23)

inspiration and are just not sure how to piece it all together to make the decoration or design work for their family’s requirements should contact Liz. Other projects can consist of a family having the vision for their space however lacking the confidence to create it. Liz added: “I understand that many people consider the nature of A. Rose Interior Inspirations a luxury, as many interior designers come with an expensive price tag. However, to ensure costs can be kept to a minimum for a project, I tend to DIY a lot of finishes and products. I ensure each item is finished professionally, tastefully and with its own touch of class. All products are very unique - sometimes I surprise myself in what I can actually do!”

“There are NO limits,” Liz stated as she went on to explain how she endeavours to create spaces where children will continue to grow into throughout their childhood. “For some families, a traditional, masculine design may work for their little man with strong base colours for his bedroom such as navy or black that will evolve over time with the contribution of adaptable elements and accessories. “Or for their little lady, a mix of fun, character and style can create her bedroom with fabulous pops of colour throughout feature pieces such as lamps, artwork and ottomans, built up on a neutral base. “Clients do not need to spend a fortune on every item, I would rather mix inexpensive basic accessories with a few statement pieces of furniture.”

Artistic Liz finds peace with a paintbrush and her wonderful custom paintings are created for completed spaces and private purchases from the comfort of the home of the imaginative designer.

Clients of A. Rose Interior Inspirations clients are often that pleased with their child’s finished room that Liz is asked to move on to decorating other spaces in their homes.

She will skilfully re-upholster a vintage armchair in the perfect fabric to ensure the vision of a design is completed within your family’s budget and if a handmade, heartfelt piece can’t be created in her Mornington Peninsula home, she will source the required product from a local supplier.

Families will not be disappointed should they engage the services of A. Rose Interior Inspirations with its wide variety of services. LET’S PARTY AT HUNY JOYS There’s a new kid on the block - where parents can kick back while their children learn as they play. It was only when Amanda and Matthew found themselves searching for somewhere on the Peninsula to have a coffee where their three-year-old would also be entertained that they struck upon the idea of opening up a new venture. So they decided to open Huny Joys, a funky cool café in Rosebud. Huny Joys is a playcentre for juniors with play equipment, games and activities, and a cool little café to enjoy a bite of lunch, a snack or a great coffee.

Amanda said: “The activities are not like a normal playcentre, this is an actual café style and the activities are more educational. There are crayons and paper to develop creativity, blocks to help develop hand-eye co-ordination and practice motor skills and climbing frames for the little ones. We even

have a jumping castle and a cubby house.” With a small child and having just moved to the Peninsula, Amanda is well aware how isolated parents can feel. She added: “We are also about creating a community hub where mums can come together for support and friendship. When we moved here, we knew nobody and had no connections. “It is a beautiful place to live but can be very isolated. We are creating a great atmosphere for mums and kids and are going to be hosting talks each month with experts in childcare and entertainment.” Huny Joys can be found at 1609 -1611 Point Nepean Road, Rosebud West. Bonding through experiential learning Currently celebrating its 30th year as Australia’s first international student exchange organisation, Southern Cross Cultural Exchange has been based in Mt Eliza for the last fifteen of those years. Their exchange programs allow high school students aged between 15 and 18 to truly experience a deeper level of cultural engagement that just doesn’t happen with modern forms of communication. Students and host families both learn about a different culture right in the heart of the home. Their world expands, they become more engaged and better informed. This then lays the art of experiential learning. The educational exchange program is the perfect example of experiential education, happening at an age when high school students need to venture from family comfort zones but with safety parameters enforced by the quality oversights and educational expertise of organisations such as Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. As one of the earliest professional organisations in the field of cultural exchange in Australia, S.C.C.E.’s National Director, Betty Lane, believes: “Opportunities will increase for Australians to go overseas to a multitude of destinations and more Australian families will volunteer to host overseas students from an everincreasing number of cultures.” After 30 years of running the not-for-profit international student exchange organisation, she looks forward to all participants benefiting – the student, school, family, community and country.

School canteen takes BestBite Student-run “Joey’s Café” at St Joseph’s Primary School in Crib Point is the first school canteen to be presented with certification in all areas of the Shire’s Best Bites food program. Cerberus Ward Councillor David Garnock presented the certificates to the school for achieving qualifications in all areas of the Best Bites program - food safety, nutrition, recycling, energy/water efficiency and access for all.

Best Bites Awards – nominate today! Nominations for the Best Bites Food Awards are now open. Local food businesses can apply for an award in any or all of the six categories. Nominations close on October 18 and awards will be presented at the launch of the 2013 Best Bites Food Guide in November. www.mornpen.vic.gov.au or call 5950 1050

Joey’s Café is open fortnightly and serves healthy, tasty and locally-produced meals to parents and guests. Grade 6 students are responsible for all aspects of the café including menus, budgeting, purchasing, preparation and service. Cr Garnock said that he was proud to present Best Bites certification to such a unique and innovative school cafe. “I’m really impressed that the café uses herbs and vegetables grown in the school garden and it’s a great example of a sustainable food business,” he said. A recent Best Bites survey of the 33 school canteens on the Peninsula found that most of the canteens qualify for Best Bites due to their high food safety rating, with 20 in the ‘Gold category’.

WHEN MEMORY FORGETS TO WORK

Have you ever wandered into a room, only to wonder why you were there?

Or were about to say something and forgot what it was? These are examples of how your working memory operates. Unlike short term memory, working memory deals with the ability to hold a thought while the brain processes a more complex task. Working memory affects our ability to think and learn. If you are unable you are unable to hold a thought for long enough to attend to the task, then ultimately you cannot complete it. Working memory deficits have emerged as a major contributor to learning difficulties, which is why children with poor working memory struggle at school. Typically, Children with poor working memory capacity become overloaded whilst completing academic tasks as they struggle to keep track of important information. Over time, these frequent missed learning opportunities amount to slow educational progress and poor learning outcomes.

exercises over a period of 5 weeks to train working memory in 25 training sessions. Training is cumulative and follows the user in a way that makes things simpler when an exercise gets too difficult. When the user advances, the exercises automatically get more difficult. A lot of the training is about repeating different sequences over and over again. A good training environment and motivation are critical. The program is completed at home with regular contact from a coach to motivate and give feedback. Cogmed Working Memory training program is suitable for adults as well as children. For further information about working memory difficulties or Cogmed please contact Ann at Richardson Education on 9787 0820 or visit the website www.richardsoneducation.com.au

Some simple strategies to support students with working memory difficulties include chunking units of work into smaller, more manageable tasks, limiting the length of verbal instructions, establishing routines and minimizing distractions. Encourage the use of checklists and visual aides to support learning and always acknowledge and reinforce focussed behaviour. Until fairly recently, poor working memory was considered to be unchangeable, however, neuroscience research over the past 10 years shows that working memory capacity can be increased, or made to work more efficiently. Unlike other cheaper “fad” brain training games, Cogmed is specific to improving working memory in 80% of Users as evidenced in over 35 academic, independent, peer-reviewed studies from reputable universities and their researchers around the world. Cogmed is an evidence-based program developed by a neuroscientist. It is computer based and uses different OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2013 (23)

EXPLORING THE PENINSULA’S CULINARY DELIGHTS

Seafood and eat it

Discovered by Mornington Peninsula Magazine over 5 years ago now, Mt Martha-based sea farmer and aquaculturist, Peter Lillie, is enjoying a wave of popularity among those with gourmet tastebuds. Peter, who is the general manager of Bay Sea Farms, said: “We started farming in Mt Martha in 2007 but prior to that, I had a little plot which I’ve still got over in Flinders. I was experimenting with abalone for at least 10 years and eventually grew some, to size, based in the sea. “Along with my co-investors, there are three of us, we also have a small land-based abalone farm in Portland and we wanted to seafarm as well. The water came up for sale in Mt Martha and I had a house there so we thought we would go and bid on one of the [sea] blocks which were 18 hectares. Then, we bought the lot, so we ended up with 90 hectares. So we’ve got plenty of feed.” Peter started experimenting with abalone in Mt Martha, but not with a lot of success. He also tried putting a few mussel spats [collectors] out to collect the baby shellfish. The mussels soon began to collect on the lines in the water.

The next and perhaps most exciting development is the so-farsuccessful growing of the bay’s native Angassi oysters, the only oyster permitted to be grown in Victoria. Pacific (Asian) oysters are grown in Tasmania and South Australia. Scientifically named Ostrea Angassi, the ‘native flat oyster’ is a close relation to the French Ostrea Edulis, also known as the Belon oyster, reputedly the world’s best. The first year’s crop was hung out at sea in August 2011, taking close to 18 months to mature. “My brother-in-law is a French chef and he loves these oysters. He says they’re fantastic and virtually identical to the Belon. We’re selling them now with a shell size of around 80x90mm and when they are available, they are on the menu at The Rocks restaurant in Mornington. “We are hoping to export them eventually, we think there’s potential. Our first year’s production was more of an experiment,

He added: “We thinned them out and put them on new lines and then we were starting to grow mussels. But it was difficult and we could not catch much spat because the ecology of the bay has changed with the introduction of the Asian-Pacific starfish. We think it has cleaned out all the brood-stock mussels on the sea floor.”

so we don’t have heaps of them at this stage.” Most of the current crop is currently measuring in at around 70mm but need to get to at least 90mm before making their way to the plate. Bay Sea Farms sell from the boat at Mornington Pier from 10am each Sunday and at farmers’ markets including Mornington. Email plillie@ bigpond.net.au for any further information.

Fisheries Victoria and DPI supported a seeding trial at Queenscliff which, after an initial failure, was successful in its second year, producing good base-stock. “Once we got the hatchery going, we were in business and selling about 150 tons a year. We are probably the second biggest in the bay in terms of volume, but probably the biggest in terms of area and we have recently purchased a second boat.”

Cancer, Pink & The truth about Cakes!!! Since the age of 13 creating and designing cakes has been Sally Quill’s passion, and 1996, it became her career when she opened her first business - ‘The Cake Cottage!’ As Sally says, “In the words of Pink ‘Cuz I Can’.” The rise of the business was acclaimed by various accolades. The Cake Cottage was a finalist in the Victorian Bridal industry Awards 9 years running by customer choice. In 2008 it took 1st place and 3rd in Australia. “This was a true highlight, and followed with many accreditations for years to come,” says Sally. “In February 2009 I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,” Pink’s biggest fan, Sally said. “I wanted to make the ‘Great Escape’! ‘Who Knew’ this would happen to me... my world fell apart and I said to myself I’m in ‘Trouble’ and so now ‘My Signature move’ was to ‘Try’ and ‘Try’ again. I did, and not only once but three times. Despite my diagnosis I continued to pursue my dream of opening a shop front for my business, then in March 2012, I opened Cake This.” Now facing her fourth battle with cancer, Sally says that Pink’s music has played a significant role in each recovery to date. “The lyrics and the timing of her album releases seemed as though they were written for me. With Pinks recent Australian tour, I wanted to show my appreciation of this place she had, had in my recovery. I was lucky enough to win a backstage pass and decided that I would use this

opportunity to make Pink one of favourite things ‘cheese cakes’ topped with my handmade images of her ‘Truth about love’ tour. I included a letter with the cakes and was overwhelmed and thrilled when I received a personal Tweet from her.” Sally then took the liberty to make Pink and her crew a replica of the stage in cake. This was delivered on her final Melbourne concert celebrating her record 18 shows.

“I got to hold her hand while she was singing at the front of the stage. This was a surreal moment in my life. Once again she has inspired me to ‘Get the party started’ on this cancer and have it ‘leave me alone’ once and for all.” Sally says throughout this experience she has learned valuable lessons, about life and all it offers and how to better her business, making wiser decisions. “Due to me not protecting my intellectual property I have to forgo the name Cake This, whilst this name was (I thought) important to me I have learnt that it’s only a name and not what I’m all about so am going back to my ground roots ‘The Cake Cottage’. Life has gone full circle and ‘So What’ I’m still a rock star” and it’s nice to return home,” says Sally. My journey has only begun so please ‘Raise your Glass’ with me come and experience my store and or shop online - our brand new addition and be a part of ‘The Cake Cottage’s’ return, it’s not just a cake shop it a Slice of Cake heaven..... We’ve created a real music venue now more than anything because it’s a reflection of who we are. Because of our contacts in the music industry we’ve been able to hire the best of the best,” says Bev. “For good musicians to find a place is really hard so it gives us a great sense of pride and the audience love it.” Vesbar is always pumping with one thing or another. Whether its a quite drink with friends, a meal or snack from the tapas menu, or the fabulous music playing on a Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon,

there’s always something happening. If you’re a fan of trivia, rock up and join in the weekly Thursday night trivia competition which is always a bit of fun and if you don’t have a team, Bev will find a group for you. Behind the bar Bev and the friendly staff concoct tempting cocktails, along with a selection of Australian and peninsula wines, and European beers on offer. A European influence in the decor sees light shades made out of motorcycle helmets and glasses and of course, the Italian vespar in the corner. The music suits all ages, with artists like Mike Rudd, Paul Barry, and even Bev and Leigh performing on a regular basis. Look out for Vesbar first birthday celebrations and a weekend of Oktoberfest in October. Details and updates can be found on the Facebook page. A cosy little wine bar with a welcoming feel, Vesbar is at 80 Station Street, Somerville. Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday 11am till late. Phone 5978 0493.

Pierre Khodja

Charmingly cosmopolitan collection of flavours Multi-award winning chef Pierre Khodja at Flinders Hotel has now added another garland to his many merits, winning the HM Chef of the Year 2014 award. Chosen as the winner from 600 competing hotels across Australasia, finalists included chefs from luminary venues such as Sofitel on Collins, The Sebel Pier and The InterContinental in Sydney, the Sheraton on the Park, The Royal Mail in Dunkeld and Eichart’s Private Hotel in NZ. Pierre has previously earned a string of chef’s hats in The Age Good Food Guide and this year rated around the top of the Herald Sun’s 100 best restaurants in Victoria. “Everything is done in-house; all the breads, sauces, everything. It’s all about quality. It’s all about the food,” Pierre said from the comfort of a settee by his beloved Terminus restaurant. “The fish, duck, chicken and pheasant arrive at Flinders Hotel whole, and then the work begins. Because I want the apprentices in this kitchen to learn, starting with the basics. I do everything in my power to pass on all skills,” the chef said. “Being a chef is not about adding ‘powder’ to water, the important thing is the skills. At Terminus restaurant the key ingredient is the customer. “My dream comes true every

time I hear someone say thank you - that was amazing. Being recognised by the media is the icing on the top,” Pierre said. “With Head Chef Shane Smith and Sous Chef Graeme ‘Ginger’ Walter, we are a very strong team. We buy as much locally as we can. Apples, cheese, strawberries, asparagus and Boneo potatoes - the guys often pick our ingredients up on their way to work. No other place on the peninsula is really similar in style. Peninsula - our new conference and events space is unique, large and versatile. A perfect venue with state of the art facilities and outstanding food to match

“Pierre this time won an award that compares our chef with other hotel chefs, and he came out on top,” said hotel GM Nicholas Parkinson-Bates “For us, it’s another step up.” Blessed with enviable experience and knowledge, Pierre has put The Terminus restaurant ‘on the map’ as a destination for avid gourmet diners. His most popular main course is the threeway-roast-lamb. The spring lamb trio, spiced with chermoula, includes ten-hour-braised shoulder, a rack and a loin. CLASSY, RELAXED & CONTEMPORARY After spending more than a decade in the Mt Eliza dining scene, establishing both Conrad’s Alfresco and Verde Restaurant + Bar, Restaurateur and Chef Cameron Taylor has now made his mark in Frankston with two fabulous venues - The Boathouse Restaurant and Crackerjack Waterfront Cafe. “We have been at The Boathouse for two years now, so it’s enough time to prove the popularity of what we present,” Cameron said.

Comfortably classy, relaxed, informal and contemporary The Boathouse is Frankston’s special restaurant. The swish renovation to the classic building, edged with a gorgeous rear garden flowing to the creek, make it an occasion location, a wedding venue and a romantic place ready for memorable moments. Cameron has a preference for regional suppliers who treat the kitchen with top seasonal produce, sourced close to home. Artisan BoatShed cheeses and Angassi oysters come from Mt Martha. Mornington Peninsula Brewery ales and a balanced listing of regional red and white wines are well featured. Foxey’s Hangout’s Pinots have proved particularly popular and Crittenden and Quealy wines are also listed favourites. They even have their own range of Boathouse and Crackerjack labelled wines which are great value for money. “Our focus is on regional wines and produce, unpretentiously prepared – fresh, friendly, Modern Australian

- without going overboard,” Cameron said of the restaurant that is particularly busy on weekends. “It’s a feel-good place and a go-to venue.” Fresh seafood is delivered daily and snapper is now in season. The popular baked fillet is wrapped with a layer of pancetta and served on a bed of grilled zucchini, pearl barley, and herb salad topped with pine-nut butter. Long time Executive Chef Jacqueline Connon’s main courses include braised lamb pie partnered with a two point roast cutlet on white bean puree with marinated artichokes, buttered kipfler potatoes and an orange jus. The slow-cooked, beef short ribs are baked for 12 hours and served with polenta chips and crushed oregano chimichurri. “They are magnificent, almost caveman delicious, not too sticky but almost caramelised,” Cameron said. The linguine marinara is prepared with fresh local mussels, pan-seared scallops, calamari and endeavour prawns in a light, roast pepper and burnt butter sauce. The seafood share plate includes house-cured Atlantic salmon. Daily blackboard specials augment a menu that constantly evolves. The tasting plate dessert is a selection of five or six specialty sweets including caramelised orange-almond tart. “We are the prime dining venue in Frankston. We have the ambiance, the staff and the food. – it’s the perfect place,” said Cameron. OPENING NIGHT FOR PENINSULA BAND HOST

Peninsula Band Host

After many years centre-stage performing with bands such as Dirty Boogie, active singer Niki Richardson has launched a new Peninsula-based band and entertainment agency. Talking about the new venture, Peninsula Band Host, Niki said: “I have decided to use my experience to help fill an empty regional niche by starting up an exclusive band agency. “PBH is local and offers a more personalised service than other agencies. We ensure that all our artists, from soloists through to nine-piece ensembles, are highly experienced and are able to provide not only an incredible sound, but captivating interaction with guests. This ensures they will assist with making an event into a memorable occasion.” The PBH website is set up as a one-stop-shop where clients can browse through listed artists, hear demo recordings, watch video clips, view pricing, enquire about a booking and make transactions. Band bookings will be available for events, ranging from a simple home-party, through to wedding receptions and corporate functions and Niki assures clients that the agency will help clients to find the perfect musician to suit their particular requirements and venue size. Niki added: “I love dealing with people and after more than 25 years working in hairdressing, as well as performing and gaining all the right skills and experience, I’m ready to connect music with people and assist with creating perfectly entertaining functions and events.” PBH will hold a launch party at Beaches in Mornington on Sunday, October 6. Four bands will take to the stage from 2pm and all are welcome to go along and witness the atmospheric magic that PBH performers can create, while enjoying the nibbles provided. Feel inspired to venture outside That’s what great outdoor furniture should do. On glorious days, mild days, even days when the heater’s on and it looks like it might just rain, a great piece of outdoor furniture should catch your eye through the window and make you think “I might head outside for a bit”. Early Settler has turned that thought into a simple philosophy: make every piece of outdoor furniture enticing. Their eclectic, new-season range brings together one-of-akind, storytelling pieces with modern designs and tried-andtrue classics, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The team at Early Settler knows that the mark of a good piece of furniture is the way it speaks to your heart. It’s the piece that’s ‘just right for you’, which works perfectly in

that spot you’re thinking of. They’ve kept that difference in mind as they’ve brought this season’s collection together, so you’re sure to find your perfect piece. They’re also aware that it’s just as important that those pieces are comfortable, high-quality, and provide exceptional value for money. Nothing draws you to a piece of furniture like the promise of comfort. Comfortable furniture is designed to consider the person who uses it, wrapping itself around you and your lifestyle. It keeps enticing you back because your body knows “that was designed for me.” Additionally, the best furniture congratulates you for buying it every time you use it. That’s where real value comes from, and it’s why the team at Early Settler work hard to keep their pieces available for any budget, because your pleasure

is magnified when you know you’ve invested well. At Early Settler, they also know that the greatest test for outdoor furniture is how it responds to the environment – beautiful in the showroom should still be beautiful after twelve months in the sun, rain, wind, and dirt. To stand the test of time, Early Settler carefully selects hardwearing materials that are easily maintained, and invests in craftsmanship because well-made makes for long lasting. When you take a stroll through the store or flick through the new catalogue, we’re sure you’ll feel inspired. turf, water features stack stone, glass and aluminium pool fencing, garden decor, artificial turf, Australia’s premier instant turf, and much more.” Joel says now is the perfect time to weed and feed the lawn and fertilise your garden. “With some sunnier days approaching, its a great time to get out in the garden and get the lawn ready for summer. LANDSCAPE & DESIGN A ONE STOP SHOP! A second-generation business, the Garden of Quasimodo has recently received a breath of new life with Joel Norford taking over the reigns. Situated in Moorooduc on the Mornington Peninsula, Joel’s parents started from scratch 19 years ago when they were selling concrete statues from their farm down the road. Two decades later, the Garden of Quasimodo is a one-stop shop for all your garden, landscape, decor, pool and spa needs. After working in the family business from a little tacker and full-time landscaping since he was 16, it was a natural progression for Joel to come into the business more permanently. The Garden of Quasimodo is an outdoor shopping delight with garden pots, statues, ponds and water features.

CUSTOM DESIGNED FURNITURE AT LUDUCO When you think about custom designed furniture, locally made and unique to the Peninsula, one name springs to mind Luduco Living. With a lifetime of experience in furnishing and interior design - which included a very successful period of cabinet and sofa design for an International brand - it is no surprise that owner, Jeremy, has enjoyed enormous success with his specialist store in Mornington ,which has been providing the community with custom built sofas, fine dining and cabinet furniture for the past 6 years . Whether your taste is modern and streamlined or more classic, Luduco Living has something for all styles, and will customise to suit individual needs. “We design a large percentage of our product range in house which makes much of our offering unique to Luduco Living ,” says Jeremy. “In terms of specific customer projects no matter whether they are large or small, simple or complicated we don’t like to say “no” to a customer. And because we work with small local workshops we have the flexibility to make what people need and want rather than offering them a narrowed range of imported product as so many retailers have opted to do these days. And because we understand design and furniture construction we are good at getting it right!! At least our customer feedback is always very complimentary!!

“One of our more recent successes is the ‘Odyssey’ wall range of free floating cabinets and shelving where all pieces are wall mounted and free from the floor. LED lighting underneath and above the cabinets and shelving helps highlight the floating affect. The concept evolved from a customer request to have their TV and all electrical equipment and cabling hidden and in such a way that the furniture became the feature rather than the equipment! We sourced German slider systems for doors and push touch and self closer systems for drawers and the outcome - apart from a very happy customer - was embryonic to ‘Odyssey’ being designed as a complete wall system for our showroom! .” The same customising and bespoke offering is also available on their large range of sofas and modulars, with designs to suit all styles from the modern sleek ‘Capri’ with its clean square modern lines , to the classical opulence of the ‘Buckingham’ with its melt away sumptuous comfort. “All of these can be made as a sofa or corner unit. You can alter the depth, width, height and choose from 8 comfort levels,” says Jeremy. There is also an elegant range of designer dining tables, including the ‘Airley’, a combination of reclaimed timber and new Tasmanian oak, with the crisp clean lines of a large solid block of natural Tassie oak suspended between great posts of reclaimed timber. The rest of the range echoes the same theme whether it is a buffet , coffee table, sofa table or entertainment unit. Such great designs for beach living !! And last but not least Luduco Living are also the Chair

Centre for the Peninsula stocking a number of international chair brands including the famous Norwegian IMG and Stressless products .In total they have an offering of between 50 to 60 different chairs from which to choose, each designed for ultimate comfort and support. “Our furniture is carefully made and designed with the end use in mind. Consequently all of our warranties are substantial, reflecting the high quality and confidence we have in our products. Everything is sensibly priced and offers great value for money and all this is matched with the equivalent level of customer service” says Jeremy.
