Master's Report 2021-2022

Morningside College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 2006 with generous donations from the Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation Limited for the purpose of accommodating 300 students on a fully residential and communal dining basis.

The Morningside College Master’s Report is published annually and is circulated to all members of the University and College communities. PROFESSOR NICK RAWLINS 汪寧笙教授

I arrived at Morningside shortly before Christmas 2018; LALLA and our two dogs arrived about a week later. We were all made most welcome as the four, newest members of the College community, and it was immediately obvious that we could not have come to a friendlier place; it did not take much longer to discover that Morningside is distinctive for many other reasons besides. Not only does it feel very special to those of us who live here but it is also seen as being different across the wider university. Part of that is of course because it is a very small, and fully residential, college. Part is because it is so international. Yet it would be perfectly possible to be both those things without being like Morningside. In a few brief years, the Fellows and Members, the college staff, and our students have, between them all, created something that was envisioned by our donors and Overseers but could only be realised by those who live and work here: a genius loci that has held us together through the extraordinary set of challenges from which I dare to hope we are finally emerging. Now, as I write this, almost all of ‘our’ first generation of studentsthose who welcomed us in 2018 – have graduated and left. We miss them very much. But their spirit remains, despite all the ups and downs of the last three years. Morningside is still a most special place, and it has welcomed this year’s new arrivals, including ARLO, our very boisterous new puppy, just as it welcomed us.

When we held the first communal hall of the year on September 8th 2021 it was our first for the better part of two years. It was an immensely happy moment. There were smiles everywhere. How lovely it is to see real, smiling faces after such a long period of seeing only masks, however smiley the eyes above may be. Morningside Hall was a familiar setting for some and a complete novelty for others but I don’t think that anyone there could have missed the sense of delight that radiated from a community reassembled. That sense of celebration continued when Morningsiders and their families gathered for the university’s 90th Congregation (and my own first officiating as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor) and Morningside’s 9th College Graduation Ceremony in November, and in early December we had our first Formal Hall for over 800 days. After such a wonderful start, what could possibly go wrong with the year? Sadly, we all know: Hong Kong was devastated by its fifth wave of Covid.

Once again, the university asked all its residents who could go home to do so, and took steps to minimise the daily flow of people to and from the campus. Teaching reverted to online only. Staff worked from home so far as possible, and the hostels no longer welcomed visitors. Mask-wearing and regular disinfection were essential routines. It wasn’t fun, but it worked. Campus numbers dropped to around 4,000 residents, and slowly declined thereafter; fewer than 150 are known to have contracted Covid, far below the infection rate across the city more generally.

All this means that our constant and progressive adaption of what we do – and of how we do it – has continued as the pandemic situation and the University’s teaching modes themselves change. This process has been an ever-present challenge for PROFESSOR ANN HUSS and her GE team and something of a baptism of fire for our Junior Fellows. They rose to the challenge – indeed they clearly thrived – and we said farewell to them, with gratitude and admiration inevitably mixed with sadness, as they moved on to the next stages in their careers: MARYELLEN STOHLMAN-VANDERVEEN and NORA MA to graduate study in the UK, while JULIET LEVESQUE is staying in Hong Kong. The last of the resident tutors who were here with us through the most difficult days of 2019 have also left Morningside to take important steps in their careers –SHANE TSAO to a postdoctoral position at the NIH in Bethesda and ROCKY ZHU to a Japan Foundation Fellowship in Tokyo.

The College once again came through all this with flying colours, and memorable achievements at all levels. There were 76 names on this year’s Master’s List for academic achievement – 25% of all our students. Our Fellows also sparkled: Nature Biotechnology identified PROFESSOR ROSSA CHIU as one of the world’s top twenty translational researchers, while PROFESSOR YEN JOE TAN received a Croucher Foundation Innovation Award (an achievement shared with a group of distinguished Morningside Fellows), and DR CHRISTOPHER SEE received the Faculty of Medicine’s Education Award for 2022. We, and our students, are very lucky to have them. You will see more of what we have collectively achieved as you read through this report. Once again it illustrates what inspiration, commitment, and sheer ingenuity can achieve despite the obstacles that we have had to face.

Academic life ebbs and flows. Every new year’s student intake infuses us with fresh possibilities, and each year’s graduates take something of us out into the wider world. Our Fellowship also changes and self-renews. During this year we bid farewell to three Fellows – PROFESSOR ROSSA CHIU, DR JULIE CHIU and PROFESSOR KELVIN MIU – and to three of our Members, MS DORA DAI, DR NG YUEN KENG, and MR LAM HO MAN. I am grateful to them all for their contributions to Morningside and, as ever, emphasise that this should be au revoir rather than adieu. And we welcomed PROFESSOR ELIZA MIK and DR SALLY SUN, who joined us as Fellow and as Member this year.

Morningside is immensely fortunate to have such an engaged and imaginative Committee of Overseers. The pandemic has once more restricted our ability to get together as we would like, but it has by no means disconnected us. Their wise counsel, and the remarkable and thoughtful generosity of our donors, has seen the College successfully through another extraordinarily difficult time. I thank them all and, at the same time, I thank all the academic and administrative members of the Morningside team who have turned that advice and support into action. I am grateful to each and every one of them, and am proud to be working with them.

“What a year” is a phrase that has practically become a fixture in my Master’s Reports. I look forward to deploying it again next year, but in a quite different context. What an extraordinary year it will be when everything goes smoothly as planned: here’s hoping!

The College continued to nurture interesting conversations online and in the classroom this year. Students engaged with the work of MIRA SETHI, the author of this year’s One Book Programme selection Are You Enjoying? (Bloomsbury, 2021) in the freshmen seminar, Current Dilemmas and Their Histories. In November, the College celebrated the graduating Class of 2021 at the 90th Congregation for the Conferment of Bachelor’s Degrees. The Master commended the achievements of 69 graduating Morningsiders. Graduates NATARIE TSU (Public Health) and STEVE MAK (Linguistics) addressed the audience. We ended 2021 on a high note with a Formal Hall Dinner on December 2. Students were thrilled to be back together in their college gowns to celebrate the end of term.

In February 2021, Mira Sethi returned virtually to judge the annual Morningside Photography Competition, the themes of which – past, present, future – were inspired by her short story collection. Sethi’s work also inspired the College’s first art exhibition, titled “Not Just a Selfie: Inquiries of the Present” and curated by Junior Fellow JULIET LEVESQUE. An interview with Sethi was published in the Morningside Magazine and a recording of a conversation between Sethi and Junior Fellow MARYELLEN STOHLMAN-VANDERVEEN was uploaded to the College’s YouTube channel.

In May, the Class of 2022 was celebrated in the Student Common Room during a Photo Day event organized by the Morningside College Student Union.

College Fellows interviewed over 260 applicants in 2021. 73 students joined the Morningside community. International intake increased to 42% while local Hong Kong and Mainland intake remained stable with only a 3% variance.

Minor differences were noted in student intake by Faculty when compared to 2020 intake statistics: Science intake increased by 6%, while Arts intake decreased by 11%. Engineering, Medicine and Social Science intake remained stable.

The College maintained its commitment to ensuring that all students have access to the various opportunities that the College and the University provide. Over HK$2.3m in Scholarships and Financial Aid were awarded to deserving Morningsiders this year.

Countries/Regions of origin include: Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea, State of Palestine, Thailand, United Kingdom, United Republic of Tanzania and Uzbekistan.

Morningside College’s Student Union, led by President HARAM YOON (Laws) during Term 1, represented students on College Committees and advocated on their behalf. In Spring 2022, students elected a new Executive Council, with UMOTO YU (Biomedical Engineering) as the Student Union President.

The fall term was full of interesting activities. In October, students attended an event with local musicians POH WONGKHAM, NATE WONG, and JEROLD CHU. The visitors discussed the music scene in Hong Kong and how one develops a music career. Poh is a saxophonist who doubles as a Morningside Resident Tutor and MPhil student in Computer Science and Engineering. Nate Wong is the drummer of Nowhere Boys. Jerold Chu works as a keyboardist, producer, and composer traveling between London and Hong Kong.

November was a busy month. Morningsiders participated in a chocolate tasting workshop with Cacao HK, a chocolate business that specialises in creating "guilt-free" chocolate. Students tasted a variety of chocolates and listened to a presentation on how chocolate is produced, considering the ethical, environmental, and labor-related issues within the industry.

The Morningside Music Community organized a Music Night on 17 November. Music Nights are highly anticipated events

at Morningside – the audience was not disappointed! Special guests Nate Wong and Jerold Chu returned to campus to join our student musicians for a fun night of great performances. Later in the month, students met artist MINAA MOHSIN at a virtual paint-along. Mohsin is the artist who created the cover art for our One Book Programme book Are You Enjoying?

In early December, Morningside Junior Fellows and Year 1 students ANORA ABDUVALIEVA (Global Studies), AUNG HEIN THANT (Mathematics), SAM HUANG (Science), YEGOR KOZHIN (Quantitative Finance & Risk Management Science), LAM TSZ HO (Medicine), ENDRIA TAI (Medicine) and SUAN YEON (Journalism & Communication) gathered at the Master's Lodge to virtually attend the Asia Society Hong Kong (ASHK) Annual Gala Dinner. The dinner was generously sponsored by DR CHIEN LEE, Council member of CUHK and Chairman of The Bei Shan Tang Foundation. The students had an enjoyable evening with much interesting conversation.

NALINI DHIMAN (IBBA) and ANNA BUELOW FUGLSANG (Government & Public Administration) received Spirit Awards in recognition of their hard work, energy and commitment to the College. ETHAN WONG (FinTech) and YU JILIN (Electronic Engineering) received Achievement Awards. Service Awards are detailed on page 18.

GENERAL EDUCATION

通識教育

Two College General Education courses were offered online in 2021-22. Both courses were supervised by the Dean of General Education, ANN HUSS. Tutorial instruction was provided by Morningside’s Junior Fellows NORA MA (Georgetown University, Government and History, 2021), JULIET LEVESQUE (Connecticut College, History and Museum Studies, 2020) and MARYELLEN STOHLMAN-VANDERVEEN (Smith College, Philosophy and Psychology, 2019) (Photo below, left to right).

YIP NGA MAN (Global Communication, Year 1) was awarded the David Parker General Education Best Essay Prize this year for an excellent paper on music copyright written for GEMC1001. DR CHRISTOPHER SEE, who adjudicated the competition this year, commented that Yip’s “inventive effort at presenting a philosophical debate on musical copyright from the perspectives of four philosophers in a radio interview format was wonderful.”

The Peer Mentoring Programme (PMP) wrapped up another successful term in November 2021 with a programme of 9 mentors and 11 mentees. Designed and delivered by College Member DR YVONNE LOONG, the PMP prepares senior students to provide guidance and support to incoming firstyear students.

The Writers Series continued into its tenth year with an online visit from renowned Taiwan novelist CHI TA-WEI. Chi discussed examples of LGBT lives in various works of modern Chinese literature, including PAI HSIEN-YUNG’s Crystal Boys and QIU MIAOJIN’s Notes of a Crocodile and Last Words from Montmartre. The event was co-organised with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival.

SERVICE LEARNING

Although in-person service learning was severely limited by the ongoing pandemic, several Morningside students managed to complete service learning projects as part of the College’s General Education program. They dedicated over 200 hours of service work in Hong Kong.

Forty final-year students completed a greatly enhanced online service learning programme redesigned by the General Education team for 2022. Students participated in online conversations with multiple local service providers including Beyond Vision Projects, Christian Action, and HELP for Domestic Workers. They also completed group and individual projects on issues related to the environment, refugees, disability and foreign domestic workers.

HUI MAN CHUN (Architectural Studies) and MYLES NG (Economics) received Morningside College Service Awards for the 2021-22 academic year. Hui volunteered at the Chinese YMCA and the Urban Renewal Authority. Myles committed many hours to supporting the work of HELP for Domestic Workers. He also created “HelpBridge”, a socially driven, app-based mobile information platform that provides Hong Kong’s domestic workers with information on legal rights, financial literacy, and mental and physical wellness.

INCOME

Overall income rose by 9% from $14.8m in 2020-2021 to $16.1m in 2021-22. Donations and matching grants were up by $1.1m, reflecting a 15% increase. Despite the significant decline in the investment market under the pandemic, the 3% University payout from the endowment slightly increased by 6%, from $3.1m to $3.3m, while the government subvention and other income remained similar.

EXPENDITURE

decreased by 14.4% over the past year, from $15.4m to $13.2m. The decrease of $2.2m was due to a drop in the College operation expenditure, funds allocated for scholarships & financial aid, and events affected by the pandemic situation. The College allocated additional resources of $0.5m to enrich the student experience through General Education activities and slowly resuming exchange programmes.

INVESTMENT POLICY AND PERFORMANCE

The College’s primary objective when managing capital remains the same as in years past: to safeguard the College’s ability to continue as a going concern and to maintain a strong financial base to support the development of the College. To this end, the College invested in financial instruments which include funds held by the University that are managed in accordance with relevant financial management policies and practices.

Due to the unfavourable investment climate for 2021-22, the College experienced a disappointing year during which the endowed funds recorded a decrease of $6.3m. With income of $16.1m and expenditure of $13.2m, total funds decreased by 2.3% or $3.3m, from $144.1m to $140.8m.

THE COMING YEARS

As the pandemic wanes, the College will expand fundraising activities to support student development, increase scholarship provision, and provide for the long-term sustainability of General Education programmes. At the same time, the College will continue to take a prudent approach to spending in light of the unstable investment climate.

GOVERNING DOCUMENTS

The College is bound by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance (“the Ordinance”), Statutes, and Council resolutions.

The College is governed by the Constitution of Morningside College (“the Constitution”), approved by the Council on 16 November 2010.

The Ordinance prevails in the event of any inconsistency with the provisions of the Constitution.

THE COMMITTEE

The Committee of Overseers, annually, (1) before the beginning of each academic year, endorses the proposed budget of the College for the academic year, and submits it to the Council for approval; (2) after the end of each academic year, prepares and submits to the Council the audited accounts of the College, in such form and at such times as the Council may determine.

ASSEMBLY OF FELLOWS

The Assembly of Fellows is constituted and regulated in accordance with the Ordinance (Statute 16, 2B), the terms of which are enforceable ultimately by the Vice Chancellor. The Assembly of Fellows is self-appointing.

DUTIES

The Assembly of Fellows sets the strategic direction of the College and regulates its administration and the management of its finances. It meets regularly under the chairmanship of the Master and is advised by its Committees.

The Assembly of Fellows assists the Master with:

(1) arranging tutorial instruction, pastoral counseling and other forms of education;

(2) the provision and supervision of residential accommodation for students at the College; and

(3) the maintenance of discipline within the College.

The Assembly of Fellows normally meets three times a year. Committees of the Assembly of Fellows develop policies for approval by the full Assembly of Fellows and subsequently monitor their implementation. The duties and membership of the Committees are described in detail in the Terms of Reference for each Committee, kept on record by the College Secretary.
