MASTER’S MESSAGE

I re-read last year’s Master’s Report before I started to write this year’s. It struck me that both its beginning and its end are just as pertinent as they were then. Last year’s Master’s report began with a short, but heartfelt, phrase: “What a year!” This year has been no less remarkable. There is, of course, a clear continuity between the two. The constraints on university life that we first met in the second half of the academic year 201920 extended throughout 2020-21. Face-to-face learning has been largely impossible. The College has never been empty, but never so much as half full, either. Communal Hall as we knew it has been no more than a distant memory. The whole campus has been quiet. And yet Morningside has very clearly retained its identity and, to a remarkable extent, its sense of community, too. How has this happened? Let me start with the College residents. Throughout the University, the majority of those who went home for the Lunar New Year Festival in early 2020 simply didn’t come back at the end of the break. That was true for Morningside, too, but because we are much the most international of CUHK’s Colleges, a much higher proportion of our students were still here than had remained in other colleges. They, alongside our Resident Tutors and resident Fellows, formed the nucleus of our residential population for the remainder of 2019-20 and for the whole of 2020-21. We often describe Morningside as a home and our students as part of a family, and both those descriptions come very strongly to mind when I think back over the last year. We have students here who have been unable to travel back to their own countries for over two years, and the College has been their full-time home-from-home. We haven’t been able to offer and enjoy any of our usual events – there have been no live Music Nights or Film Nights, nor Communal Halls nor MC Rangers barbecues, and we have had to maintain a strict No-Visitors policy. Yet three times a week, during term-time, our caterers provided dinner in takeaway format. Dinner box collection offered a regular opportunity for us all to see each other – albeit briefly and in masks. Evening temperature-taking, though at times understandably seen as a something of a chore, offered another chance: the College Dogs clearly appreciated being able to join in and socialise in air-conditioned comfort, though now there are just two of them. Our gentle and polite Tycho reached the end of his life in April, and is still awfully missed.

2

With academic life almost entirely on-line, classes have been identical for non-resident and resident students. Our Junior Fellows came up with some innovations for Morningside’s widely admired (and fairly widely feared!) General Education 1001 course, which were designed to increase the sense of shared participation. They really worked, and are now being promulgated through two, international university networks, representing 88 universities. The One Book Programme worked beautifully too, not least because the book’s author, Lulu Miller, volunteered to Zoom onto our screens at a deeply unsociable hour in the USA. We found ways to deliver online Service Learning modules, and we streamed Music from Morningside College Hall alongside a sheaf of other online activities that have kept our scattered membership connected. So, as the summer progressed, the first semester of the 2021-22 academic year approached, and new faces started to appear, it was sometimes hard to know who was really new and who was returning. That wasn’t just because of the masks; it was also because freshers – and 2nd year students entering the College for the first time – already knew a great deal about the place, and knew a lot about their classmates, too. We are not re-building our community from scratch: I am delighted to be able to report that it had never disappeared. Academic success persists as well. This year, the Master’s List, which recognises academic excellence, has 87 names on it. That would be a very good number at any time but, as was the case last year, it is particularly impressive for having been achieved despite a backdrop of continuing uncertainty and disruption of normal teaching methods. I congratulate each and every one of the students on the List. The long-term survival of any institution depends on two things. It must have a capacity for constant change but, at the same time, it must never lose its soul. That combination has been a hallmark of the greatest, ancient universities, but in these unpredictable times it is surely no less essential for any educational establishment that, like Morningside, has a real sense of purpose. Yet although we embrace change, it has its moments of poignancy. We have said farewell to notably more of our Fellows and Members this year than last: Professors Simon Haines, Leo Lee Ou-fan, Carmen Poon, Yau

Shing Tung, Emma MacPherson, and David Donald have all moved on; so, too, have Dr Nandita Mullapudi, Mr Tang Tsz Ming, and Mr Howard Lam. From the College’s own roster, Ms Michelle Leung and Mr Yifu Dong have also left us. They all take with them our very best wishes for their continuing success, and our grateful thanks for their many contributions to the College. Their destinations stretch far beyond Hong Kong to include the Continental United States and Hawaii, the UK, and Australia – illustrating, once again, Morningside’s international connectedness – something that is further underscored by former Morningside students and one of our Resident Tutors who are now doing doctoral and postdoctoral work in exceptional labs in Oxford, Cambridge and Vienna. It has been lovely to help them to find their ways there. As always, we owe a deep debt of gratitude to our Committee of Overseers with whom we are able to share our plans – and hopes – for the future, and from whom we receive advice, encouragement, practical support and friendship in equal measure. We are extraordinarily lucky to have such committed and generous supporters and, as the CUHK campus opens up once again, we very much look forward to seeing them here at Morningside: the ‘No-Visitors’ policy has been difficult for everyone! This report records some of the other ways in which Morningside has risen to the challenges of the year. You will see that it has been innovative, cohesive, characterful, and successful. My closing words last year were that, “Whatever this year brings, I am confident that Morningside will once again make us proud.” It has, and as the College looks forward to the coming year there are broad smiles beneath the masks.

MASTER’S MESSAGE

THE COLLEGE

Although in-person gatherings were not possible this year, the College continued to nurture interesting conversations in 2020-2021. Lulu Miller, the author of this year’s One Book Programme selection Why Fish Don’t Exist (Simon & Schuster, 2021), joined students in the freshmen seminar, Current Dilemmas and Their Histories, to discuss how we move through periods of chaos as individuals and as a community. In February 2021, Lulu and Kate Samworth, the illustrator of Why Fish Don’t Exist, judged the annual Morningside Photography Competition, the themes of which – chaos, meaning, resilience – were inspired by Miller’s book. Interviews with Miller and Samworth were published in the Morningside Magazine, and Miller visited us for a second time via Zoom to give a talk entitled “Hacking Your Compass”.

In November, the College celebrated the graduating Class of 2020 during a virtual graduation ceremony. The Master with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rocky Tuan, celebrated the achievements of 80 graduating Morningsiders. Graduates JOELLE LI (Psychology) and KEVIN FENG (Information Engineering) addressed the audience. Several months later, the Class of 2021 was celebrated on the patio during a Photo Day event. The Master and Dean of Students Colin Graham addressed students and their parents, lauding the resilience of this graduating class and inviting students to give thanks to all who had helped them.

In late May, students and Junior Fellows attended a preview screening of the film Drifting directed by Morningside alumnus JUN LI (Journalism & Communication, 2014). The film is a fictional depiction of a real lawsuit over the rights of homeless residents of Sham Shui Po. Li’s first feature film Tracey was nominated for three awards at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival in 2018. A group Q&A session followed the screening and our students managed to snap a photo with Jun and one of the stars of the film, Will Or. AUDREY CHUNG (Medicine) received a Spirit Award in recognition of her hard work, energy and commitment to the College. CHOI CHING LAM (Electronic Engineering), recipient of this year’s General Education Essay Prize, also received an Achievement Award. Service Awards are detailed on page 18.

GENERAL EDUCATION

Two College General Education courses were offered online in 2020-21. Both courses were supervised by the Dean of General Education, ANN HUSS. Tutorial instruction was provided by Morningside’s Junior Fellows (Photo below, left to right) JULIET LEVESQUE (Connecticut College, History and Museum Studies, 2020), MARYELLEN STOHLMAN-VANDERVEEN (Smith College, Philosophy and Psychology, 2019), and YIFU DONG (Yale University, History, 2017). Following a year of online teaching, Yifu, Juliet and Maryellen participated in the University’s thirteenth annual Teaching and Learning Innovation EXPO in July 2021. Their selfdesigned research project (photo, page 17) evaluated the implementation and effects of discussion board assignments, a new feature of GEMC1001 in light of distanced learning in the past academic year. Results of the survey indicated an overwhelmingly positive student response to the use of discussion boards in the course with students finding that the virtual assignments fostered deeper engagement with course concepts as well as deeper connection with their classmates at a time when they could not be physically together in class.

16

CHOI CHING LAM (Electronic Engineering, Year 1) was awarded the David Parker General Education Best Essay Prize this year for an excellent paper on Citizen Assemblies written for GEMC1001. DR JULIE CHIU adjudicated the competition for a second year. The Peer Mentoring Programme (PMP) wrapped up another successful term in November 2020 with a slightly pared down programme of 11 mentors and 23 mentees. Designed and delivered by College Member DR YVONNE LOONG, the PMP prepares senior students to provide guidance and support to incoming first-year students. The Writers Series continued into its ninth year with an online visit from Hannah Lucinda Smith, The Times of London correspondent in Turkey and author of Erdogan Rising. The event was co-organised with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival.

SERVICE LEARNING Although in-person service learning was severely limited by the ongoing pandemic, several Morningside students managed to complete service learning projects as part of the College’s General Education program. They dedicated over 200 hours of service work in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Thirty final-year students completed a greatly enhanced online service learning programme designed by the General Education team. Students participated in online conversations with multiple local service providers including Beyond Vision Projects, Christian Action, HELP for Domestic Workers, Ocean Recovery and RainLily. They also completed group and individual projects on issues related to the environment, gender equality, refugees, disability and foreign domestic workers. LEUNG YIN (Medicine) and HERMIA CHAN (Global Studies) received Morningside College Service Awards for the 2020-21 academic year. Yin volunteered at Mother’s Choice, the CUHKJockey Club Children’s Eye Care Programme, the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, and promoted an HPV vaccination programme for the Nethersole School of Nursing. Hermia worked with a variety of environment-focused organizations including ThinkOcean CUHK and V’Air Hong Kong.

Total income including the return on endowment rose from $14.6m to $36.3m, an increase of $21.7m. While recurrent income remained stable, the endowment yielded significant capital growth of $24.6m, up from $2.6m last year, due to the recovery of the financial market. The University’s 3% payout on endowment remains unchanged. The remainder will be retained in the endowment as capital growth. The donations and matching grants related income remained similar, thanks to the recurrent support from the Morningside Foundation Limited and fundraising efforts.

INVESTMENT POLICY AND PERFORMANCE

The College’s primary objective when managing capital remains the same as in years past: to safeguard the College’s ability to continue as a going concern and to maintain a strong financial base to support the development of the College. To this end, the College invested in financial instruments which include funds held by the University that are managed in accordance with relevant financial management policies and practices.

There was a 17% increase in the total endowed capital. The increase in total funds from $123.2m to $144.1m, a net increase of $20.9m, primarily reflects the investment gain described above.

THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE

The College has striven to cultivate its unique culture and student experience during the COVID-19 pandemic challenge through an innovative use of technology. While the residential College operation has gradually returned to normal with our vaccinated community, the College will continue to bear in mind the lessons learned during the pandemic, and review its resource allocations in light of the new normal. The College will re-engage its fundraising activities when the situation allows. Its priorities will be to support student development, increase its scholarship provision, and provide for the longterm sustainability of its General Education programmes.
