s Homecoming just about “The Game”? Of course not, says Morgan Athletic Director, Floyd Kerr. “Homecoming is a great time to showcase the University and its achievements for the alumni and to encourage their continued support,” Kerr says. “And this year, with the inauguration of our new President taking place during Homecoming, there will be even more activities that alumni and others will want to attend.” Of course, that’s not to say Kerr, always a planner, wasn’t focused on this year’s football season when we talked with him in June. “Forty members of the team have signed up for summer school and/or to work out over the summer,” Kerr reports. “That’s the most players ever. It’s a good sign. Most of the team has been here for four years. It’s good that we’ve had time to work with them that long. And our senior leadership is strong.” “We also have a number of standout players,” Kerr reports. “Darren McKhan, #7 (a defensive back), is one of the MEAC’s top defensive players, and Lamont Bryant, #8, a tight end, is one of the best players in the conference.” “I think we have a very, very good schedule,” Kerr continues. “The biggest highlight is that we’re playing the University of Maryland, College Park,

which has a very strong program. And then the next week we’re going to Fargo, N.D., to play a good Football Championship Subdivision (Division I-AA) school, North Dakota State University. With those two games on our schedule, it demonstrates that we’re upgrading our schedule with more quality and national-level competition. In addition, two of our MEAC opponents, South Carolina State and FAMU, were ranked in the top 20 of the FCS last season.” The South Carolina State game will be broadcast live on ESPNU, Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. As for this year’s Homecoming game, adding to the stakes for Kerr is the fact that he has a personal

tie to this year’s opponent, Delaware State. He and the Hornets’ coach, Al Lavan, were roommates at Colorado State University, where Lavan played football and Kerr played basketball. The two remain friends. Kerr recently completed his fifth year as Morgan’s A.D. He says he’s pleased with the progress the Athletic Department has made. “When I came on board, we implemented a strategic plan to basically take the program to the next level,” he says. “The objectives of that plan were to recapture our competitive edge, particularly in football and men’s and women’s basketball; to control spending and reduce our budget deficit; to make sure Morgan was in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations and have a clean NCAA certification; to make sure that athletics played its part in helping grow the enrollment of the institution; to regionalize our athletic plan, so we could concentrate our efforts within the footprint of the MEAC conference; and to improve the welfare of our studentathletes by upgrading our sports medicine, strength and conditioning programs.” “We have met each of our goals,” Kerr says. “Further, we are currently reevaluating the program in order to reset future plans for continued growth.” See Homecoming Highlights on page 5

Your alumni dues made it possible! Homecoming 2010 will have an extra level of excitement, as alumni join in welcoming the 12th President of Morgan State University, Dr. David Wilson. Many events have been planned for the campus, in addition to “The Game,” and I hope you will use these opportunities to extend to Dr. Wilson a special Bear welcome. Dr. Wilson will need the support of all of our alumni to move forward the new and pending initiatives that will ensure Morgan remains well respected in the higher education community, locally and nationally. Alumni Day 2010 Inspires Fellowship and Giving his year, all MSU classes ending in “0” and “5” celebrated their anniversaries on Alumni Day, Friday, May 14th. Approximately 475 alumni and friends attended the day’s main event, the Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, which was held in the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom of Morgan’s University Student Center. The event opened with a Welcome Reception, which featured a chocolate fountain with an array of fresh fruit; MSU Bear hugs; lots of laughter; and the recalling of many fond memories. A Southern style lunch was served, after which many Alumni Day participants left the campus with full hearts, satisfied appetites and tears of joy, awed by the beauty of the campus and how much it has changed for the better. For many, the day was also bittersweet: Luncheon attendees held onto every word spoken by Dr. Earl S. Richardson, who retired as President of Morgan less than seven weeks later, on June 30, 2010. Several classes were especially helpful in making this Alumni Day a success:

The Class of 1960 The Class of 1960, this year’s 50th anniversary class, presented a check for almost $54,000 to the MSU Foundation at the reunion luncheon. This partial class gift will continue to grow as members make donations through the end of December. Class members traveled back to Morgan for the occasion from California, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and, of course, Maryland. Almost 70 alumni, family and friends of the class attended the luncheon, and many participated in the class riverboat cruise, a class memorial service, visits to cultural sites in Baltimore and other events of what the class dubbed “Alumni Weekend.”

The Class of 1965 The Class of 1965, with former MSU President Dr. Earl S. Richardson, filled three tables at the reunion luncheon and reached a major milestone in its fundraising campaign, which began in 2006. The class set a goal last year of raising $50,000 by Homecoming 2010. Well ahead of that schedule, during the reunion luncheon on Alumni Day, the class announced it had raised $67,590.

The Class of 1970 The Class of 1970 held a telethon, calling on class members to add to the class gift and attend the reunion luncheon and the Class of ’70 reunion event. As a result, class members filled five tables at the luncheon, where the class presented a $134,000 check to the MSU Foundation – the second-highest donation of the day. The Class of 1970 reunion event — held after the luncheon at the Helen Roberts Faculty Dining Room — was also well attended.

MSUNAA Cancels Contract with Liberty Mutual The Morgan State University National Alumni Association had a long-term Affinity Program with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, whereby the Alumni Association received royalties based on the amount of new and renewed business Liberty Mutual was able to sign up with Morgan State alumni. However, MSUNAA found the financial gains of Liberty Mutual to be extremely disproportionate to those of the Alumni Association. In addition, during the 10-year

contract period, MSUNAA received very little from Liberty Mutual in terms of sponsorships for its various programs. After careful consideration, and after numerous meetings and conversations with Liberty Mutual, MSUNAA’s attorney and the Morgan State University National Alumni Association, the association decided it would be in its best interest to discontinue the contract with Liberty Mutual effective May 1, 2010.

I N TH E N EWS MSU Choir Concludes Successful Tour of China The Morgan State University Choir returned home to Baltimore on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 from a weeklong, five-concert tour of China that took the group to four cities. The choir performed first in Beijing, on the evening of June 8, in a collaborative concert with the Beijing Wuzi University Choir. From there, the world-renowned Morgan choir traveled to Tianjin for a concert in the city’s premier music hall before an even more enthusiastic crowd. Next was the choir’s participation in the Qujiang Xi’an International Youth Festival, in the brand new Xi’an Concert Hall. The festival’s closing ceremony was held the next day in an outdoor venue on Purple Cloud Mountain. The choir’s final day in China was especially thrilling for the students, who had the opportunity to

sing at a World’s Fair: the Shanghai World Expo. The MSU Choir was featured in performance twice at the American Pavilion, representing the U.S. in song. “It was the perfect way to end a very memorable experience in China for our students,” says Choir Director Dr. Eric Conway.

The Morgan State University Foundation, Inc. will hold its 22nd Annual Invitational Golf Tournament on Friday, May 6, 2011, at Turf Valley, in Ellicott City, Md. The tournament benefits the Intercollegiate Athletics Scholarship Fund. Checkin begins at 7:30 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 9:00 a.m. The registration fee is $150.00 per golfer and includes a luncheon after the tournament. Prizes will be awarded to the top men and top women golfers. A Golf Clinic, directed by Morgan State University’s very own 1967 Hall of Fame Golf Team — Tim McCready, Rodney “Binx” Watts and Al “Frog” Wilson — will provide three hours of individual instruction on the fundamentals of the game, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The fee for the clinic is $120 per person and includes the tournament luncheon. James E. Lewis Museum Exhibits The James E. Lewis Museum of Art at Morgan State University presents “Memories Revealed,” Saturday, Oct. 16–Friday, Dec. 10, 2010. This exhibit by E.J. Montgomery is a journey through the mind, replete with landscapes, calligraphic insignia and lyrical design. Born in New York City, Montgomery has a career that spans more than 40 years. It is my pleasure to greet you as the new president of Morgan State University, an institution rich in academic excellence, achievement and leadership. Because of the preparation that you received at Morgan and the success that you David Wilson have achieved since leaving here, you have aided significantly in this University’s becoming one of the great centers of higher learning in the United States. During these early days of my presidency, I have been busy meeting several alumni and friends of the University and have been warmly received by all. In the coming months, it is my intent to visit several alumni chapters across the country discussing at length my vision for Alma Mater and seeking your feedback and input. One of my primary goals is to meet as many alumni as I can early and often. I will reach out continuously to you and our other vital communities to hear your ideas and concerns, and engage you in an ongoing conversation about ways in which we can improve upon your experiences at beloved Morgan. Hearing from you will be fundamental to our efforts to build, throughout the University, a culture of service excellence that will be second-to-none in higher education in the nation. Our goal at Morgan will continue to be to put students on the right path to success and leadership, and your full engagement with us is critical as we seek to improve the overall student experience. Inaugural Celebration for Morgan’s 12th President, Dr. David Wilson During Homecoming Week, Oct. 17–24, 2010, Morgan State University will also celebrate the inauguration of its 12th president, Dr. David Wilson, who joined the Morgan family on July 1, 2010. The theme of the Celebration is “Growing the Future—Leading the World.” The high point of the Inaugural Celebration will be the Presidential Installation Ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in the Gilliam Concert Hall of Murphy Fine Arts Center, when Dr. Wilson will be invested as Morgan’s 12th President by Board of Regents Chairman Dallas R. Evans. Beckles, ’61, has announced the publication of “Hop the A Train,” an historical novel based on her family’s vivid accounts of how their lives were changed by the events of World War II. Box 32141, Pikesville, MD 21208. Dr. Marchell Boston, ’95, was named the DeKalb County (Ga.) School District’s 2010 Administrator of the Year by the Organization of DeKalb Educators. Dr. Boston was selected for this prestigious honor based on the qualities he displays as a teacher advocate and a highly effective leader. Dr. Boston is the principal of Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Ga., which is a kindergarten to fifth grade elementary school. The Georgia Chapter of the MSU National Alumni Association is a proud partner in education with McNair Discovery. Kwame R. Brown, ’94, is running for Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia. Brown is a Democrat and an At-Large member of the council. The primary election takes place on Sept. 14, 2010. Brown received his bachelor’s degree from Morgan in marketing. He is also a graduate of the Minority Business Executive Program & Advanced Business Executive Program at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a graduate of the Senior Executive in State & Local Government Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Before winning a seat on the D.C. City Council, he was appointed by President Clinton as Senior Advisor in the U.S. Department of Commerce. Later, Commerce Secretary Norman Mineta promoted him to director of the department’s Business Liaison Office. After his service 6

in the Clinton administration, Brown led the Maryland/District of Columbia Minority Supplier Development Council as president/CEO. MSU School of Business and Management graduate Chantelle Crawford, ’90, has teamed up with her cousin, MSU computer science undergrad Benjamin Hall, Jr., to develop “New School Nursery Rhyme: A Hip Trip Through Classicville.” Hall is owner, operator and CEO of Codenamejupiterx, Inc., a company based in Baltimore. “New School Nursery Rhyme,” the company’s premier product, is a musical album designed to help young children become proficient readers. English, ’68, has been reelected to a new three-year term as President of the Baltimore Teachers Union, the collective bargaining agent for the education employees of Baltimore City. She is also President of the American Federation of Teachers–Maryland. Ms. English has served in leadership positions with a number of other national, state and local professional organizations for educators, has taught children in grades Pre-K through eight and has worked as a Special Education Instructor. Jeanette Hawkins Evans, Ed.D., ’73, ’86, has been elected National President of the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) National Alumni Association. Dr Evans retired from her positions as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor and Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees of ECSU in May 2007, after a 40-year tenure in public secondary and higher education institutions. Dr. Evans earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership and her master’s degree in English and Urban Education from Morgan. She now works as a consultant with Teresa Farnum & Associates, an enrollment management firm.

Isaiah Fletcher, Sr., ’56, received his Master of Arts degree in liberal studies from Loyola University Maryland in May, at age 82. Fletcher has had a varied and colorful academic and professional career. He got his high school diploma after joining the Merchant Marines during World War II. Fletcher earned his bachelor’s degree from Morgan with the help of a scholarship; worked as a teacher, broadcaster and human services specialist; received a Master of Education degree in guidance and counseling from Harvard University and retired in 2000. “I needed another challenge,” he told The Beacon newspaper in July, after receiving his master’s from Loyola. He plans to begin a degree program in English at Morgan this fall. Capt. Marci Hodge, U.S. Army, ’00, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for her work as a humanitarian officer with the 401st Civil Affairs Battalion in Baghdad, Iraq. Capt. Hodge is an ROTC graduate of Morgan and a nineyear veteran with the Army Reserve. As a humanitarian officer in Iraq, she was responsible for developing strategic plans and policies for upcoming missions to better the lives of Iraqi locals. Now back in the U.S., Capt. Hodge is a Team Leader with the Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. The News Journal newspaper in Delaware recently spotlighted the gardening prowess of Robert L. King, ’64, in an article titled “Bellevue Stories Long on Plots.” King spent 34 years as a teacher, then administrator, in the Brandywine (Del.) School District and retired as principal of Darly Elementary School in Claymont, Del., in 2000. Now known locally as “The Garden King,” he spends seven hours a day, seven days a week tending his crop at Bellevue State Park and giving guidance to new gardeners, The News Journal reported. King, a vegetarian, is also “very active” in Morgan’s New Castle County, Delaware Alumni Chapter. US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine has highlighted the work of Edward J. Lee, ’80, for the second year running, by naming the U.S. Air Force to its 2010 Top Supporters of

HBCUs list. Lee is Deputy Chief of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) External Programs and Resources Interface division. He oversees the division’s $260million annual budget and also has sole management of four major AFOSR programs, including the Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) program. The annual budget of Lee’s program management portfolio is $18.1 million. The State University of New York Board of Trustees has appointed Shaun L. McKay, Ed.D., ’04, as President of Suffolk County Community College. Dr. McKay earned his doctorate from Morgan in higher education administration, with a specialization in community college leadership. He is the sixth president of the college he now leads. “Throughout his career, Dr. McKay has demonstrated significant achievement in campus administration, academic program development, budget and finance, strategic planning and institutional assessment,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, in March. “As chief operating officer of SCCC for the past year, Dr. McKay has proven to be an effective and capable leader.” Associated Black Charities honored Tenyo Pearl, ’93, as an Emerging Leader in Higher Education, at the organization’s 25th Gala in June. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore. Pearl is Campus Director for the American Humanics Program at Coppin State University and serves on Coppin’s faculty. In June 2009, she received an Honorable Mention recognition by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents for her “Exceptional Contribution to the Institution.” Pearl earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morgan and her M.A. in nonprofit management, with highest academic excellence, from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

Class Agents Reconnect at MSU Alumni House Representatives of more than 20 Morgan State University classes, from 1949 to 1994, attended MSU’s All Class Agents Meeting on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The gathering was held at MSU’s Alumni House. Cheryl Y. Hitchcock, MSU Vice President for Institutional Advancement, discussed topics including alumni giving rates and class gifts with the agents. Class Agents in attendance traveled from various parts of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts to attend. Other items discussed were locating “lost alumni,” the Alumni calendar of events, and planning of reunion programs and activities for individual classes. What are Class Agents? •Class Agents help build informed, unified and motivated classes for a stronger Morgan State University. Class agents serve as liaisons between their classmates and the University. What is the Purpose of the Class Agents Program? •The Class Agents Program provides a network of classmates to ensure that alumni keep in touch with each other and the University. Class Agents help coordinate reunion activities and raise money for the University. What is the responsibility of a Class Agent? •Encourage classmates to reconnect and stay connected to the University;

•Inform classmates about University-related events and personal news items such as moves, marriages, family changes, new jobs, awards and recognitions, and networking opportunities; •Plan and promote class reunions and work to encourage classmates to make annual financial contributions to the University. A strong alumni participation rate is a source of pride for the University and an indication of the loyalty of alumni. Many corporations and foundations want to know about our alumni participation rate when they make decisions on their philanthropic support. As a result, the faithfulness of our alumni is vital to the University’s ability to attract prospective students and get funding from corporations and foundations; and •Create an informal network of alumni who live in different parts of the country to help plan class events and recruit attendees.

School of Social Work Chapter Formed, Plans Gala A new School of Social Work Alumni Chapter will be chartered on Friday, Oct. 22, during the MSU National Alumni Association Annual Homecoming Business Meeting, at the University Student Center. Morgan’s School of Social Work was launched in November 2009, through a restructuring of the University’s School of Education and Urban Studies and the longstanding Department of Social Work. To celebrate its founding, the new alumni chapter will hold a week of symposia, workshops, lectures and a VIP Reception, culminating in a Grand Gala at Valley Mansion by Martin’s on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010. The History-making Class of 1969 ‘Circle of Supporters’ The Class of 1969 Circle of Supporters, which began in 2009, still lives! We are expanding the circle with new contributors while retaining the initial donors. After raising more than $50,000 to initiate a scholarship endowment in 2009, the class has continued to build momentum. Receptions to thank the 2009 donors were held at the home of Cecil and Sheryl Flamer in Baltimore during April and May 2010. The class is working now to raise $25,000 each year, leading up to our 45th reunion in 2014. We have two primary goals: 1) to increase the number of alumni who give on a yearly basis and 2) to solidify connections among classmates by way of planned gatherings, such as the Homecoming Brunch and Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, on Alumni Day. New Alumni Chapters Needed If you have not been invited to join an alumni chapter in your area, either there is no chapter or the current chapter is no longer functioning. Would you consider taking the leadership role to start one? Alumni chapters exist strictly to support Morgan State University and its students. Our alumni chapters give our alumni opportunities to fellowship, plan events that bring alumni together and, most important, provide much needed scholarships for students to attend Morgan State University. It is truly a remarkable experience to be involved in a chapter. This is what you need to do to get started:

•Contact the MSU Office of Alumni Relations about starting a chapter or revitalizing a defunct chapter. We will provide you with a list of alumni in your specific area or discipline. This will help you determine whether there are enough alumni in your area to support a chapter. These lists are confidential and are to be used for the sole purpose of MSU chapter activities. Any other use of these lists is strictly prohibited. •Your next step is to find at least five (5) individuals who are interested in starting a chapter. It takes the efforts of more than one person if you want to be successful. It can also be rewarding if individuals are committed. •Plan an initial meeting. You may consider a small reception. The Alumni Association will assist with this initial meeting by sending out your first notices and assisting with funding. •Plan another meeting to discuss your objectives for the chapter, develop the dues structure, select a name for your chapter, and elect officers. Each member of a local chapter must be financial with the National Alumni Association. You must convey that to prospective members. •When officers are selected and the organization is officially recognized, the president automatically becomes a member of the Board of Directors. The number of additional members of the board is in accordance with the number of dues-paying members. For example, if there are 25 dues-paying members, you would be allowed one additional representative. •You may want to start with one event for the first year, which would give you some idea of the commitment of members. •Maintain contact with the Office of Alumni Relations during the structuring of your chapter to keep the office abreast of your progress. We are here to assist you in any way that we can. •If you are confident that your chapter has potential, and the members have shown an interest in moving forward, you may apply to the Office of Alumni Relations and the National Alumni Association for a charter. This charter will allow you to become an official arm of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association. •Chapters are usually chartered during our Annual Homecoming Business Meeting.

Bears Face Bison in the Urban League Football Classic The Golden Bears of MSU face archrival Howard University on Saturday, Sept. 25 in the New York Urban League’s 40th Annual Football Classic. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. at the new Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Tickets are $20 to $75 and are available at the Ticketmaster office on Morgan’s campus and Ticketmaster locations everywhere. An Alumni Pre-Game Celebration Party (A Good Ole Morgan House Party) will be held on Friday, Sept. 24 from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at the Renaissance Hotel, 801 Rutherford Ave., Rutherford, NJ 07070, which is the host hotel for Bears supporters.
