Dr. David Kwabena Wilson

David Kwabena Wilson, Ed.D., is the 10th inaugurated president of Morgan State University— Maryland’s Preeminent Public Urban Research University. For more than a decade, Dr. Wilson has not only been a transformative president at Morgan but has emerged as a leader among university presidents nationwide as well as an effective advocate for HBCUs and the role they play in developing leaders and serving the needs of their community, state, and nation.

Dr. Wilson has a long record of accomplishment in his more than 30 years in higher education administration. He is a nationally recognized 2023 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education winner and a newly elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAA&S) and the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). Dr. Wilson also serves on the Lumina Foundation Board of Directors, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) Board of Directors, and the NCAA Board of Governors and Division I Board of Directors. Dr. Wilson is the former chairman of the HBCU/China Network, and in 2010, he was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the Board of Advisors on HBCUs.

Among the many recognitions received throughout his professional career he has been awarded the Maryland Senate’s First Citizen Award and the Transcendent Order of the African Eagle Award. In addition, Dr. Wilson has been named as a Baltimore Business Journal Top 10 CEO, an AFRO Newspaper ‘Person of the Year,’ a Baltimore Sun Business and Civic Hall of Famer, and one of the Maryland Daily Record ’s ‘Power 30’ in Higher Education. To his credit, Dr. Wilson was named in Forbes as a “Top Black Higher Ed CEO to Watch in 2023.” He has also authored two books and more than 20 articles in scholarly journals and other publications.

Travis Mitchell

Travis Mitchell serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Content Officer at Maryland Public Television. He oversees all content created, acquired, and aired on the statewide public television network’s TV channels and online properties.

Having amassed more than three decades of experience as an executive in commercial and public media, Travis earned an undergraduate degree in broadcast journalism from Morgan State University, where he was a member of the men’s basketball team and began his career as the editor of the campus newspaper, The Spokesman. He has the distinction of serving as the spokesperson for the 1990 Morgan Student Protest dubbed “Six Days of Determination,” the largest and longest organized student protest in the history of Maryland protesting inequitable funding for Morgan from the State of Maryland. He holds a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and education from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education in Philadelphia. He has completed further executive education study at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education from Pennsylvania State University.

Travis has served on the foundation board of Morgan State University and most recently became the Chair of the Board of Visitors for Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communications. In 2021, Mr. Mitchell was appointed to the Board of Trustees at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he also received an honorary doctor of humane letters from the university in recognition of his more than 25 years of service to the community as a media and non-profit executive.

ROTC Alumni Chapter

It is hard to imagine the alumni association without Ms. Davis in a leadership position. She has served the MSUAA for over 15 years, starting in the ROTC Alumni Chapter, and working her way up through the ranks to MSUAA president in 2019–2023. She is currently the immediate past- president of the MSUAA. Ms. Davis was instrumental in organizing alumni during the Maryland Higher Education lawsuit—which resulted in a $577 million settlement with Maryland’s HBCUs. She was the recipient of the National Alumni Association of the Year Legacy Award 2020, from the Board of Directors of The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation. Ms. Davis has also funded an endowment in the MSU Foundation and has purchased Life Memberships for her family—including those that are not Morgan alumni. She is a charter member of the Red Dynasty Alumni Chapter; and pledged Delta Sigma Theta at the Alpha Gamma Chapter at Morgan.

Mr. Faulkner is a 2016 graduate of Morgan State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. He is being recognized as the Outstanding Young Alumnus because of his exceptional undergraduate achievement, commitment to the MSU Alumni Association through his Life Membership (joined in May 2016), by joining the Howard L. Cornish Alumni Chapter and, purchasing sponsorships for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast that make it possible for 2 Morgan students to attend. Since graduating from Morgan in June 2016, Michael has been employed as a Software Engineer at JP Morgan Chase and is currently a Software Engineer at LinkedIn in Houston, Texas. He uses technology to develop applications to solve some of the firms’ operational objectives and deliver key results. With diversity and inclusion being a topic of great discussion, he has the ongoing privilege of volunteering to recruit and interview top talent at various conferences, including the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA), and serves as a mentor to new hires from various universities. Michael also served as a member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Houston Professional Chapter.

Theodore “Ted” Colbert, III

NOMINATED BY: Washington, DC Metropolitan Chapter

Mr. Colbert is currently executive vice president of the Boeing Company and president and chief executive officer of Boeing Defense, Space & Security. He currently is a member of the executive leadership council and serves on the board of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund; board chair for the Aerospace Industries Association; inductee of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and a member of the National Space Council’s Users Advisory Group, which is chaired by Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris. Some of his many accolades include recognition as one of the Most Influential Black Executives in Corporate America by Savoy magazine in 2020 and 2021; becoming the first recipient of the Fisher Center prize for Excellence in Driving Transformation from the Fisher Center For Business Analytics at Berkeley; winning the 2018 Forbes CIO Innovation Award; recognition as one of the Most Powerful Executives in Corporate America by Black Enterprise magazine in 2017. Both of Mr. Colbert’s parents attended Morgan, Theodore Colbert, Jr ‘78 and Shirlene King Colbert ‘70.

Alumni Volunteer of the Ye A r C. Sylvia Proctor, ‘67

DC Metropolitan Alumni Chapter

Ms. Proctor is a Life Member of the Morgan State University Alumni Association and a member of both the Washington, DC Metropolitan and Southern Maryland Alumni Chapters. She manages key events for both chapters, including the SMAC Blue & Orange Scholarship Dinner & Dance and the annual Vesta Blythe Scholarship Crab Feast for the DC Metropolitan Chapter. Most recently, she devoted more than one year planning the DC Metropolitan Chapter’s 75th Anniversary event—Reimagining HBCUs Beyond 2024. This was a day-long symposium held at the Boeing Headquarters in Arlington, VA and featured several HBCU presidents, including Morgan’s own Dr. David Wilson. She has also planned her class’ anniversary events, and is currently working on their 60th anniversary in 2027 and has donated to and championed support for Morgan’s Patuxent Environmental and Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL).

Pi Alumni Chapter

The Pi Alumni Chapter was founded in 2009, and since that time has shown their commitment to Morgan and the Morgan State University Alumni Association. Members of the chapter are consistently involved with the university and the MSUAA by volunteering their time to mentor current students, recruit new students, and remain active in the MSUAA. They also offer financial support through the Linwood G. Koger Endowed Scholarship Fund. This year The Pi Alumni Chapter hosted a gala that celebrated 100 years of the Pi Chapter. In honor of the 100 years, the Pi Alumni Chapter initiated a 100 4 100 fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $100,000 from 100 members. They exceeded this goal, and presented the MSU Foundation with a check for $250,000 and the promise of another $750,000 by Homecoming 2024. The funds will be directed to the Linwood G. Koger Endowed Scholarship Fund to support current Morgan students.
