Let me introduce myself to some of you and say hello to my many friends and the entire Morgan State University family. I am Jacqueline Lawson, the new President of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA). I am honored that you have put your trust and faith in me to continue moving our association ahead. I look forward to working with Morgan alumni across this country and around the world to help implement President David Wilson’s bold new agenda for Morgan of “Growing the Future, Leading the World.” Over the summer months, your new officers — Craig Spencer, First Vice President; Phyllis Davis, Second Vice President; Joanne S. Mack, Recording Secretary; John Griswold, Financial Secretary; Charles H. Pollard, Treasurer; and I — began to assume the duties of our positions. Learning and understanding what is expected of us is the first step toward developing and achieving our goals. We are reading and studying. We want to begin the conversation with all of Morgan’s alumni on what type of organization we want to be in the future and pick the most direct path to get there, accomplishing both the short- and long-term goals that we set for ourselves. We need alumni and the MSUNAA to be major players in accomplishing the agenda of “Growing the Future, Leading the World.” We will be reaching out to you in various ways through chapter visits, website posts, e-mail, newsletters and social media in an effort to get you engaged and keep you informed. Morgan State needs increased financial support from its alumni. This support is needed not only to expand Morgan’s academic offerings but also to help keep students who find themselves in need and are facing withdrawal. We need to work to get the best and brightest students to attend Morgan and increase our overall student enrollment. When you come “home” for the weekend of October 7–9, 2011, we’ll be looking for you and reaching out to you. There are opportunities for all of us to roll up our sleeves and work for Fair Morgan. Here are some opportunities to get involved: • • • • • • •

HOMECOMING 2011 Change Is Good!

rue Bear fans at this year’s Homecoming game in Hughes Stadium will see plenty of familiar numbers on Morgan football jerseys. “…Last year’s team was a very young team. We only had seven seniors last year, and our juniors and sophomores were our strongest classes,” says MSU’s Director of Athletics, Floyd Kerr. “Those kids now are seniors and juniors.” But those veteran players are facing a very different schedule in 2011, one that includes a new Homecoming opponent, the Savannah State University Tigers. “They’ll be an interesting opponent for us. We have played them before but not since I’ve been at Morgan,” Kerr reports. “It’s been maybe 10 years. We don’t know their personnel that well yet, but we’re getting to know them.” The Bear’s schedule has only four home games and five teams that Morgan did not face in 2010: Towson University, which Morgan last played in 2009; Bowling Green University, playing Morgan for the first time ever; Robert Morris University, a once-frequent opponent that Morgan hasn’t battled in many years; and North Carolina Central and Savannah State Universities, two teams new to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). But Kerr says Morgan is undaunted by the unknowns on its agenda. As far as he’s concerned, change is good. “If you look at our schedule now, the tough games are spread out a little more, so our opportu-

nities to win are enhanced…. I can see us right there in the hunt for a football championship this year, if we stay healthy and our plans manifest themselves,” he says. Kerr says the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is delivering on its commitments to Morgan President David Wilson: to have a compliant program, to have Morgan’s athletes win in the classroom as well as on the fields or courts, to be one of the best teams in the MEAC and to brand Morgan to help enhance enrollment and grow the University. Kerr calls on Morganites far and wide to be part of that growth. “I would encourage our alumni to consider buying a season ticket book for football, even if they can’t attend the games, as an initiative to help us gain revenue for our program,” he says. “I would encourage them to come out to our events. Come out and ‘feel the roar of the Bears.’ Let us know they’re at the game so that we can recognize them as alumni.”

Give to Morgan’s ‘Five Dollar Scholarship Fund’

Morgan’s Five Dollar Scholarship Fund is seeking donors to provide financial gifts, large and small, to support academically worthy students of the University. Introduced by Morgan President David Wilson during his inaugural address in October 2010, this ambitious initiative is now building a $5-million endowment fund to be managed by the MSU Foundation. This initial corpus will be augmented by ongoing public and private funding sources. “It is through education that we will empower successive generations of students and prepare them to be responsible citizens and dynamic leaders in their chosen professions,” said Dr. Wilson, who launched the Fund with a pledge of $100,000. The Five Dollar Scholarship Fund is predicated on the simple belief that we must all give whatever we can to support those who seek a college education. Nearly 500 Turn Out for Alumni Day their classmates, friends and acquaintances with joy and jubilation, as laughter echoed through the entire second floor of the Student Center. The Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom was beautifully decorated in the traditional orange and blue motif, with orange balloons hovering high over every table. Immediately after the reception, the attendees feasted on a scrumptious meal during the Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, as they reminisced about the changes in their lives and on the campus. Longtime Morgan VP Recardo Perry Retires

A. Recardo Perry retired from his post as Vice President for Student Affairs on June 30, 2011, after serving the University for 39 years. Perry’s commitment to his work and his desire to help Morgan students were unparalleled. He did whatever it took, often using his own resources, to aid a needy student. A formal retirement tribute in his honor will be held in the University Student Center at 6:00 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2011. Alumni Relations Chooses New Assistant Director

Alison Davis Hillen, ’91, joined Morgan’s staff as the new Assistant Director of Alumni Relations on May 18, 2011. She previously served as the Executive Assistant to the President and CEO for Otis Warren & Company and as Regional Services Manager and Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Membership Services for the Child Welfare League of America, Inc., Mid-Atlantic Region in Baltimore. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Morgan in Telecommunications. Hillen has a strong customer service background and has years of experience in the management of membership-based client pools, and recruitment and client retention. Her background also includes consumer sales, office management, event and meeting planning, and fundraising. Away from work, she loves to cook, travel and learn about other cultures. She is looking forward to working with the alumni of Morgan State University.

Academic Quad Receives Major Upgrade

If all goes according to plan, the oldest portion of Morgan’s campus will have an elegant new face for alumni attending Homecoming this year. A $2.5-million improvements project is now under way on the Academic Quad. “We’re putting in new grass, an irrigation system, new trees…also stone seat walls, seat benches and other amenities, to give the area a more stately feeling,” explains Kim I. McCalla, Assistant Vice President of

Morgan’s Department of Design & Construction Management. “There will be wider walks and then nodes at key intersecting points for gathering. But we are not discouraging people from utilizing the grass areas (to) have casual conversations, as opposed to being relegated to a bench.” Some of the other elements of the renovation include new permanent fencing in front of the McKeldin Center and the McMechen Building, new pavement, bike racks, new emergency telephones, new routes allowing persons with disabilities to travel from Parking Lot H to the Quad, rearrangement of the parking spaces and bus lanes in H Lot to make the area more safe for students, and a new seat wall and bus shelter in the lot. Morgan contracted with Mahan Rykiel Associates for the landscape architecture and design work on the Quad, and with Kinsley Construction, Inc. for the improvements. “We’re excited about all of the new landscaping that’s going to be coming and feel that it’s really going to enhance the feel of the Quad area,” McCalla says. Mohammad Saleem, Morgan’s Manager, Design Services, says the Quad improvements will continue the look and design standards set by earlier construction and renovation projects on the south side of the campus. The Quad renovation is part of a larger campus-wide improvement that includes Morgan Commons, now completed, and two projects now being planned: a new softball stadium on the site of Lois T. Murray field, and new landscaping and other improvements for the areas along Hillen Rd. and Cold Spring Ln.

Alumni Host Reception for Seniors

Graduating seniors and graduate students were invited to the University’s Alumni House for Senior Day, which took place on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event was hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations and the MSU National Alumni Association. A continental breakfast was served from 10:00 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch from noon to 4:00 p.m. Each senior who attended received a tour of the Alumni House and a gift, and had an opportunity to meet with alumni. The Alumni House was decorated inside and out for the special event, and the Alma Mater served as background music, setting the emotional tone for the day.

President Wilson Advocates for Pell Grants on Capitol Hill

Morgan President David Wilson recently traveled to Washington D.C. to join a national panel of college and university leaders in support of the federal Pell Grant program, an initiative granting need-based financial support to college students. Dr. Wilson joined nine other presidents from California, Georgia, Florida and Indiana to brief members of Congress on the continued need of the Pell Grant program for college students from households living at or below the poverty line. The Pell Grant assists more than 12 million students annually in reducing costs for higher education.

HBCU Lawsuit Heats Up

Led by plaintiffs acting on behalf of Morgan State University, Coppin State University, Bowie State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education (The Coalition), is poised for trial in a federal lawsuit against the Maryland Higher Education Commission (The State). Represented by the legal team of Kirkland and Ellis —acting on a pro-bono basis with The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law — and John Brittain, Esq., the trial would be the first of its kind in 15 years. Lawyers, community activists and students nationwide are closely watching this case, which focuses on an alleged failure by the Maryland Secretary of Higher Education and the Maryland Higher Education Commission to satisfy a legal obligation to reverse policies that weaken historically black universities. Plaintiffs are seeking in excess of $2 billion in funding and an upgrade in campus facilities for Maryland’s four public Historically Black Colleges and

Soon after his arrival on Morgan’s campus, MSU President David Wilson told the University’s Director of Alumni Relations, Joyce Brown, that he wanted to visit all of the alumni chapters. As a result, Dr. Wilson has met with the Howard Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Alumni Chapter, the Detroit Alumni Chapter, the Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, the Columbia/Howard County Alumni Chapter, the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Alumni Chapter and the Harford County Alumni Chapter. He has also visited with alumni in San Francisco. Chapter Presidents: Be prepared! Your chapter just may be next on his schedule.

Universities (HBCUs), as well as the elimination of unnecessary duplication of HBCU programs at traditionally white institutions. In 2000, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) found that Maryland was not in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and standards set forth in U.S. v. Fordice, a 1992 Supreme Court decision on higher education desegregation. The Fordice decision held that a state’s duty is not discharged “until it eradicates policies and procedures traceable to its prior de jure dual system that continues to foster segregation.” After the 2000 finding of noncompliance, OCR and the State of Maryland entered into a five-year resolution agreement to remedy the state’s civil rights violations. The agreement expired in 2005, and, in 2006, the Civil Rights Clinic at the Howard University School of Law and professor Aderson Francois filed the original complaint. The Lawyers’ Committee, which has two Kirkland partners — Michael Jones and Marjorie Press — serving on its board, became involved in the summer of 2009. The case was originally scheduled for a June trial, but, after denying summary judgment in favor of The State, U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland ordered the parties to engage in mediation before the Chief Magistrate Judge of the District, with a new trial date of Dec. 12, 2011. “I urge Maryland HBCU alumni and friends to contact their alumni chapter presidents to learn more about the case and to disseminate that information to others,” says David J. Knowledge, Skills Gained at Spring Class Agents Meeting

Nineteen class agents gathered at Alumni House for a Class Agents meeting on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Two more Class Agents participated by conference call. Topics of discussion included “The Important Role of a Class Agent,” “Distinguishing Gifts Made to the MSU Foundation and Dues Paid to the MSU National Alumni Association,” “Services Provided to the Classes by the Alumni Office” and “The Importance of Alumni Giving and the Reasons Most Donors Give.” The meeting participants also had an open discussion. Another meeting is planned for Sept. 10, 2011, where a presentation will be made on the benefits of using the iModules online community to maintain contact with classmates.

Support Our Students, Every Year!

“Alumni giving” is a phrase used often in academia and the philanthropic community. This refers to university alumni giving charitable dollars to their alma maters. The alumni giving rate is tracked on an annual basis. The rate simply reflects the percentage of alumni for whom the University has valid contact information and who made charitable contributions in the previous year. The dollar amount of the gift does not matter. For Morgan State University, that rate was 6.41 percent for calendar year 2010. The gifts counted are those made to the MSU Foundation. The national average for all colleges and universities is approximately 10 percent. In addition to the obvious benefit of providing dollars for student financial assistance and scholarships, program support and faculty development, these alumni gifts are important for other reasons. Many corporations and foundations use the alumni giving rate as a factor for determining whether they will make grants to Morgan. In other words, if the alumni don’t support the University, why should they? The alumni giving rate is also a factor when U.S. News & World Report publishes its annual rankings for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. funded a contribution of nearly $10,000 to the chapter’s Vestah Blye Scholarship Fund for deserving students from the D.C. Metropolitan Area. The D.C. Chapter will continue these events in the 2011–12 school year and will advertise them once dates and times have been selected. On May 15, 2011, the chapter hosted Morgan State University President David Wilson. He inspired the chapter with his vision to grow Morgan’s student population, expand the academic offerings and improve the physical infrastructure. The chapter pledged to work with Dr. Wilson to help him achieve this new vision for “Fair Morgan.” The new Chapter President is Art Lawson, ’74, who succeeds his wife, Jacqueline Lawson, ’75. The chapter is proud that Jacqueline Lawson is now serving as 2011–13 President of the MSU National Alumni Association.

Detroit Alumni Complete a Productive 2010–11

The Detroit Alumni Chapter had a busy 2010–11 school year supporting Morgan’s recruiting program. Chapter members had the pleasure of speaking with hundreds of students about Morgan and its educational programs. Members attended several college fairs during the school year at churches, schools and other organizations. Among the new college fairs in which the chapter participated were events at the Greater Morning Star Church in Mt. Clemons, Mich., Delta Sigma Theta’s Teen Lift Program College Fair and the College Fair at the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences. Several Morgan alumni and friends attended the HBCU Alumni Cookout on Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Belle Isle Park in Detroit. Alumnus Andre Moore purchased and barbequed the delicious “dogs and burgers” that the Detroit Chapter members enjoyed on a warm, sunny afternoon. Alumni members and friends brought tasty dishes, reacquainted themselves with each other and talked about upcoming events and the good times they had experienced at Morgan. Detroit Chapter alumni had the honor of meeting with Morgan President David Wilson in November 2010, at the home of Rosalind McDavid in Detroit. Dr. Wilson shared his goals and plans for Morgan with alumni members.

Class of 1966 Celebrates 45th Reunion

The Class of 1966 extends thanks to all members for making its 45th Class Reunion in May 2011 a memorable and successful event! The class reports that its Class Gift to Morgan was $130,187.34. Forty-seven members of the class attended the Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon. Following the luncheon, the class enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Tabrizi’s in Federal Hill. The evening ended with dancing at Caton’s Castle. The next day was even more enjoyable. Several classmates spent the day in the clubhouse at the Preakness and left as big winners, because they had bet on the winner: Shackleford! The class ended its reunion weekend by worshiping at the University Chapel. The Class of ’66 sincerely hopes that even more members will be able to join them when they celebrate their 50th Class Reunion in May 2016.

D.C. Chapter Prepares for Another Great Year

The Washington, D.C. Alumni Chapter is poised for another great year of attracting potential students to Morgan, increasing alumni involvement in chapter and university activities, and working to help President David Wilson successfully implement his goals and objectives to move Morgan forward. During 2010–11, the D.C. Chapter members represented Morgan at approximately nine Washington Metropolitan Area college fairs and talked to thousands of potential students. The chapter joined with Reflections of Morgan to host a bowling party that attracted about 200 alumni. The chapter sponsored its annual Morgan Choir concert and its annual crab feast, which

50th Anniversary Is Golden for the Class of ’61

The Class of 1961 has been diligent in maintaining contact with its members over the years. The class first met at its 10th anniversary. And although it missed its 20th — as members raised children and pursued careers — it has met continuously every five years since its 30th anniversary. This success can be credited to a dedicated committee of classmates who reside in different parts of the country, as well as the use of increasingly improved technology to communicate and plan. On May 20, 2011, 40 members of the Class of 1961 were recognized at the Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon as the 50th Anniversary class. What a thrill! To show its appreciation for the many gifts their alma mater has bestowed, the class presented a check in the amount of $149,000 to the MSU Foundation. Later that evening, classmates celebrated at the Cross Keys Inn with silly games, jokes about their impending old age and attempts to perform the latest line dances. Members all paid for that excitement the next morning. The music was provided by (Dr.) Guy Bragg and his band, “Sterling Silver.” The next morning, Commencement day, the class assembled between the old Hurt Gymnasium and the new University Student Center, where the luncheon had been held the day before. The weather was near perfect, and the air was filled with nostalgia, as members struggled to get in line for the academic procession, just as they had 50 years earlier. This time, however, they were asked to lead the procession into the stadium. It was an emotional moment. After Commencement, class members met for a late lunch at Gertrude’s in the Baltimore Museum of Art and discussed every topic under the sun. The celebration ended with a Sunday morning service at the old “Christian Center,” now the University Chapel, where deceased classmates were memorialized during a candlelight ceremony. The class thanks Joyce Brown and the Alumni Relations Office staff for their help over the years, but especially during the planning of its 50th anniversary celebration.

Southern Maryland Alumni Launch Annual Meet and Greet

The Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter (MSUSMAC) held its First Annual Membership Meet and Greet on June 11, 2011, at the Bel Alton High School Alumni Association Community Development Center. Alumni residing in Southern Maryland were invited. The MSUSMAC Membership Committee presented an agenda that included planned events and projects for the year. These activities will continue to drive the chapter toward fulfillment of its mission of ongoing community service and education. A great buffet dinner was prepared, door prizes were given, and dancing completed the affair.

ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Lolita Walker Bishop, ’99, has been promoted to Program Manager for Procter & Gamble North America, supporting Male Premium Systems Blades & Razors for new initiatives. She began her career as an industrial engineer at The Gillette Company, immediately after graduating from Morgan with a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering. Bishop is one of two leaders of Procter & Gamble’s African American Affinity Group in Boston. Jerome R. Boyd, ’78, President of the Morgan State University New Jersey Alumni Association, received a Ph.D. in global and educational leadership from Lynn University in May. The title of his dissertation was “Beginning Teachers’ Job Satisfaction and Intention to Remain in Teaching: A Comparison of Traditionally Prepared Teachers and Teachers Prepared by Alternative Methods.” Dr. Boyd is a Vice Principal at Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. School in Paterson, N.J. The Rev. David W. Briddell, ’52, has coauthored a book titled, “Men of Color, To Arms! Manumitted Slaves and Freed Blacks from the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland Who Served in the Civil War.” Rev. Briddell is a Methodist preacher now retired from the National Council of Churches in Christ. He researched and cowrote the book with Salisbury University history professor Dr. Clara L. Small. Bullock, ’76, is continuing to expand Metamorphosis Wardrobe & Accessories Boutique, her chain of stores that boast unique apparel, hats, jewelry, handbags, belts, scarves and more. Her flagship boutique was launched in downtown Silver Spring, Md., in 2007. Bullock was born in Gainesville, Fla. She earned her bachelor’s degree in mental health from Morgan and worked in that field for three years before returning to her childhood passion, which is fashion. Vanessa N. Francis, ’02, ’07, was recently hired as the Assistant Director of Community Affairs at The Johns Hopkins University. Before joining JHU, she spent three years as an Urban Planner for the Montgomery County Planning Department. Francis earned a B.A. in political science and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Morgan. Ceylon Frett, ’89, has been promoted to Vice President of NobleStrategy, a construction management and training firm with offices in Harlem, N.Y., and Long Island City, N.Y., and Newark, N.J. Frett has more than 20 years’ experience in sales, marketing and technology consulting. He has managed construction management and training services for many of NobleStrategy’s most prominent clients, among them the New York City School Construction Authority and Merrill Lynch. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan in marketing. Rashida Hiba Govan, ’97, has earned her Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of New Orleans. Her dissertation was titled, “The Soul of a School: An Ethnographic Study of College-Going Culture at an Urban High School.” Dr. Govan was also selected as a 2011 William L. Boyd National Educational Politics Workshop Emerging Scholar, with the American Educational Research Association. The Rev. Cordell E. Hunter, Sr., ’69, ’75, Pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church since 1980, was presented with the 2011 Daniel Payne Alexander Award by the Wilberforce University Greater Baltimore Alumni Association in May. Rev. Hunter “inspired others by his commitment to social progress, political involvement, community improvement and education opportunities,” in his work as a pastor and in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, from which he retired as an administrator after 33 years of service, the alumni association wrote. He earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and his master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Morgan. Steve W. Miller,’75, longtime member of the Board of Directors of Morgan’s James E. Lewis Museum of Art, will serve as a Volunteer Mentor for MSU’s Class of 2015. Lewis is a visual artist who also serves the community through many organizations. He is a Board Member of the Preston Mitchum, Jr. Foundation and Project Coordinator of the PMJ Foundation’s After-School Career

Awareness Project in Baltimore County Public Schools. Lewis has received many honors for his service, among them, a 2008 Community “Champions of Courage” Award from Fox 45 TV and WNUV–TV in Baltimore, and the Doctor Louise Jones Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award for Commitment and Service to the Community in 2010. He serves on the Scholarship Committee of Morgan’s Baltimore County Alumni Chapter and is preparing to display his work with other Morgan alumni artists next May at an exhibition honoring the 2012 50th Anniversary Class, the Class of 1962. The American Advertising Federation has honored Ron Owens, ’61, with its Crystal Prism Award. The award is presented each year to “an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to marketing communications and advertising and who has been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in the areas of social concern.” Owens has served in high leadership posts with advertising professional organizations and has helped develop and launch popular national ad campaigns such as the Army’s “Be All That You Can Be” and KFC’s “We Do Chicken Right.” He has also written many newspaper and trade publication articles on advertising, diversity and multicultural marketing. Owens is former Vice Chairman of Big Brothers Big Sisters of D.C., Southern Maryland and Northern Virginia, and now serves as a Board Director of the Better Business Bureau and the Arthritis Foundation. President Barack Obama has nominated Morgan graduate Gloria Wilson Shelton, ’76, for judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. The court’s mission, as stated on its website, is to “provide veterans an impartial judicial forum for review of administrative decisions by the Board of Veterans’ Appeals that are adverse to the veteran-appellant’s claim of entitlement to benefits for service-connected disabilities, survivor benefits and other benefits such as education payments and waiver of indebtedness.” Shelton is now a staff attorney at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Before joining the VA, she was a principal counsel then bureau chief in the Office of the Attorney General of Maryland. Shelton holds a bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University in psychology and a J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Lt. Col. Melvin G. Smullen, U.S. Army (Ret.),’67, a Charter Member of the Eastern Shore of Maryland Alumni Chapter, has been elevated to Commander of the 61,000-member State of Maryland American Legion. He has been a member of the American Legion for 36 Years. Smullen received his bachelor’s degree in science and his ROTC commission from Morgan. He served as a Medical Logistician in the Medical Service Corps during his United States Army career and retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, having received many awards and decorations. Kevin Sullivan, ’04, has published a book titled, “Living in the 21st Century Lands of Lies.” “In this book, Kevin unveils Bible stories that provide the gist of God’s message regarding contemporary events and issues,” states a press release about his work. Sullivan received his master’s degree in transportation from Morgan and now works as a planner for the Baltimore City Public Schools. Robert L. Williams, Jr., M.D., ’77, was named Alumnus of the Year during the May 2011 Reunion at Meharry Medical College. Dr. Williams, a 1986 Meharry graduate, earned his Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, at Morgan. He is now Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Morehouse School of Medicine, in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Williams serves on the Board of Trustees of Meharry Medical College. He has published and lectured widely in the areas of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He and his wife, Dawn Manning Williams, M.D., are the parents of two children. Harbor Hospital of Baltimore, Md., has appointed James E. Wood, Jr., M.D., ’71, as Chairman of its Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Wood is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as Chief of the Division of Orthopaedics at Harbor for nearly 10 years. He also has held leadership roles as Director of the Orthopaedic Faculty Practice at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, as well as Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco. Dr. Wood earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan and graduated Doctor of Medicine, with high honors, from the University of California, Irvine.

Two Morgan Athletes Named STUNT All Americans

Two members of Morgan State University’s cheerleading team, Ashley Cottrell and Amanda Ross, have been named All Americans by the College STUNT Association. The All Americans for the association’s inaugural season were chosen by a committee of coaches from various regions along with two association officials, under the leadership of the USA Federation for Sport Cheering (USA Cheer). STUNT is a new competitive team sport derived from traditional cheerleading. It removes the crowd-leading and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer. STUNT has been designed with the goal of being considered for NCAA Emerging Sport status and ultimately to satisfy Title IX’s requirements for intercollegiate sport. Cottrell, a junior from Annapolis, Md., received the honor for her role as Base, as well as Top, Tumbler and Jumper. Ross, a sophomore from Columbia, Md., was selected for her role as Backspot, as well as Base, Tumbler and Jumper. The Morgan Bears and Howard Bison are set to clash at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at 3:30 p.m., for the Urban League Football Classic. On Friday evening, Sept. 23, the MSU Foundation and the MSU National Alumni Association will again host a Pre-Game Celebration that will include music, cash bar and snacks.
