Military’s presence big in area The military presence in the Montgomery region is significant, generating nearly $2 billion annually. Maxwell Air Force Base is the only Air Force base in the state. The base also is home to the state’s only Air Force Reserve unit, the 908th Airlift Wing. The National Guard also has its headquarters in Montgomery. Several hundred people also are attached to Army and Marine Corps Reserve units in the area.

Alabama National Guard The Military Department has its headquarters in Montgomery and includes the Army and Air Guard components. Together, the Guard has more than 13,000 soldiers and airmen, as well as civilian employees. Guard units statewide deploy regularly for

Christmas on the Coosa: Held in December at Gold Star Park and in downtown Wetumpka, the main event is the boat parade at night along the Coosa River. Boats are decorated for the holidays. From Page 6 Zoo Boo: The Montgomery Zoo celebrates Halloween for several days in late October with nightly attractions for the kids leading up to Halloween night. The zoo normally closes at 5 p.m., but it reopens until 9 p.m. during Zoo Boo so visitors can enjoy haunted train rides, costumed characters, candy and more. 240-4900.

Maxwell Air Force Base Air University is the Air Force’s center for professional military education. Nearly every member of the Air Force will come to Maxwell during their career for officer or enlisted training courses. Air University also includes two commissioning sources, the Officer Training School and the AF ROTC program. The Community College of the Air Force — the largest community college in the country — also has its headquarters at Maxwell. The 42nd Air Base Wing includes security forces, base operations, medical, contracting, communications and other units. The 908th Airlift Wing is the state’s only Air Force Reserve unit and has eight C-130 cargo planes. The unit also has maintenance, operations, security forces and medical personnel. The unit conducts regular humanitarian missions. The 908th also responds to hurricanes and other disasters when asked by the Air Force.

A C-130 flies a training mission at Maxwell Air Force Base. operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Guard also responds to state emergencies like the Enterprise tornado and hurricanes. About 1,250 Air National Guard members are in the region, including about 1,000 at the 187th Fighter Wing at Dannelly Field. The Army Guard has about 1,430 members in the tri-county area. The 926th Engineer Brigade is an Army Reserve unit with its headquarters in Montgomery. The unit deployed to Iraq in 2008 for a year developing infrastructure and rebuilding war-torn areas around Baghdad. The unit has more than 120 members. The 131st Military Public Affairs Detachment of the Army Reserve is also in Montgomery. Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, is an infantry reserve unit based in Montgomery. About 130 members of the unit deployed in 2007 and some members of the unit are preparing to deploy again in 2009.

Kenan Mill’s annual Fall Festival and Bluegrass Event: This annual event features bluegrass music, food vendors, arts and crafts and so much more. Kenan’s Mill was built in the mid-1800s and produced water-ground meal, grits and corn for over 100 years. The grounds also include a fascinating 19th-century brick charcoal kiln. 874-1720. Turkey Day Classic: Held on Thanksgiving Day at Cramton Bowl, this college football game features Alabama State University and Tuskegee University. Montgomery Area Transit System

MATS provides fixed route and paratransit service within city limits of Montgomery. The fixed route system averages 4,500 trips daily (more than 1 million trips annually) over approximately 4,000 daily route miles. Thirty-two buses serve 16 fixed routes between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Paratransit service provides 140 daily trips. Paratransit operates 6 days a week from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with a fleet of 10 vehicles. The downtown transfer center is at 495 Molton St. 241-2200.
