Haunted Hayride in the Forest: For several weekends in October, leading up to Halloween, South Montgomery County Academy in Grady sponsors a hayride through the forest featuring ghostly ghouls. 5623235.
Zoo Boo: The Montgomery Zoo celebrates Halloween beginning Oct. 17 with nightly attractions for the kids leading up to Halloween night. The zoo normally closes at 5 p.m., but it reopens until 9 p.m. during Zoo Boo so visitors can enjoy haunted train rides, costumed characters, candy and more. 240-4900.
Spinners Pumpkin Patch: This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the arts and crafts festival held each October at Spinners Park on West Sixth Street in Prattville. The event is scheduled for Oct. 26-27. Admission is free. NOVEMBER Alabama Frontier Days at Fort Toulouse: It’s known as “the most authentic living history event in the state” — Alabama Frontier Days, set for Nov. 6-10 at Fort Toulouse in Wetumpka. Christmas parades: Parades and tree lightings are held throughout the River Region in December. Montgomery’s parade along historic Dexter Avenue is kicked off with the governor’s tree-lighting ceremony and ends with the mayor’s tree-lighting ceremony. Wetumpka’s Christmas on the Coosa event features a boat parade, while other activities are held in Prattville, Millbrook, Eclectic, Autaugaville and Pike Road.
MARCH Southeastern Livestock Exposition Rodeo: Held over several days during March at Garrett Coliseum, the rodeo features events such as bullriding as well as livestock shows. Selma Bridge Crossing: The annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee is held the first full weekend of every March to commemorate “Bloody Sunday,” the march from Selma-to-Montgomery, and the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. 720-0500. Fountain City Arts Festival: The city of Prattville brings you the Fountain City Arts Festival. APRIL Second Saturday Riverfront Festival: The festival is held at Riverfront Park in Montgomery on the second Saturday of each month from April through September. Alabama Book Festival: The annual Alabama Book Festival attracts readers and writers to Montgomery’s historic Old Alabama Town for readings, book signings, children’s activities and more. Civil Rights Memorial: Designed by Maya Lin, the architect of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the nation’s capital, it contains the names of 40 individuals who died during the civil rights movement. 400 Washington Ave. Accessible 24 hours a day. Free. 956-8200. Civil Rights Memorial Center: Visitor center enhances the experience of the Civil Rights Memorial by providing in-depth information about the people and events it honors. Alabama Nature Center: The Alabama Nature Center and Lanark, the former estate of Isabel and Wiley Hill, form a more than 300-acre reserve of forests, fields, streams, wetlands and ponds. The center includes a 30-acre garden, five miles of trails and boardwalks and a 4,000-square-foot outdoor pavilion. Elmore County Black History Museum: Located in the re-
maining structure of the Elmore County Training School, built in 1925. The museum’s collections focus on Elmore County’s black families, their history, churches, schools and more. It also has a mirror owned by boxing great Joe Louis, who hailed from Alabama. For tour information, call 567-5109. F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum: The couple lived here from 1931 to 1932. Hank Williams grave site: An estimated 20,000 people a year make the pilgrimage to this country great’s grave site. Oakwood Cemetery Annex. Enter off Upper Wetumpka Road, proceed up hill and to the right; grave is on top of hill. Free. Hank Williams Museum: Museum opened in February 1999, moved to current location in May 2000. Harriott II Riverboat: Docked beside the Riverwalk Amphitheater, the Harriott II offers fun for everyone. Holt Street Baptist Church: On Dec. 5, 1955, just days after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give her bus seat to a white man, Holt Street Baptist was the site of a mass meeting to determine how long blacks would boycott the city bus system. More than 5,000 people attended. Many other civil rights meet-
ings and rallies were held at the church. 903 S. Holt St. 263-0522. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama: The tour of the plant has been ranked among the Top 10 free attractions in the state. Tours are given at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with reservations only. There’s also a 6:30 p.m. Thursday tour. Impact Crater: Wetumpka is home to one of 59 recognized impact craters in North America. The Alabama Historical Association placed a marker at the site, which was discovered in 1891 by a state geologist, in 2002. It is believed to be more than 84 million years ago. The Wetumpka Impact Crater Commission arranges tours of the sites, which is mostly on private lands. 5674637. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and educational programs throughout the year. Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center (Montgomery Performing Arts Centre): Located in the heart of downtown Montgomery, this attraction is not only a luxury hotel and European spa but it also features the state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre. Riverwalk Stadium: Baseball stadium is the home of the Montgomery Biscuits. The $26 million facility seats about 7,000 and opened in April 2004 for the Biscuits’ first season. Rosa Parks Museum and Library: Owned by Troy University Montgomery, the museum opened Dec. 1, 2000, on the 45th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ arrest for not giving her seat on a city

Forest: Bamboo towers 60 feet to form a canopy in the sky at this park, which includes one of the state’s largest beech trees. Open daily until dusk. Upper Kingston Road in Prattville. Free. 361-3640.
State Capitol: Contains one of the country’s finest examples of an “unsupported� staircase. This was the site of Alabama’s secession from the Union in 1861. Dauphin Island, Alabama
W.A. Gayle Planetarium: Troy University operates the planetarium for the city of Montgomery. The center has more than 200 theater-style seats. It is one of the largest planetariums between Atlanta and New Orleans. The planetarium is located on Forest Avenue at Oak Park. Sites a historical record of civil rights fight Not all the historical black sites in Montgomery are areas of reverence. The spot on Court Square Fountain is where families were forever broken apart during slave trading, where mothers sometimes saw their children for the last time, and where men’s mouths were inspected as though they were cattle. But if you are looking for civil rights sites that inspire, Montgomery has plenty of those, too. Montgomery is rich in African-American history, from pre-Civil War slavery to the freedoms fought for and won during the civil rights movement.

THE ROSA PARKS MUSEUM Owned by Troy University, the museum opened Dec. 1, 2000, the 45th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ arrest for not giving up her seat on a bus to a white man. The purpose of the Rosa Parks Museum is to uphold and interpret for public benefit, education and enjoyment materials related to the events and accomplishments of individuals associated with the Montgomery Bus Boycott. CIVIL RIGHTS MEMORIAL Designed by Maya Lin, the architect of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, it contains the names of 40 individuals who died during the civil rights movement. STATE CAPITOL The Capitol contains one of the country’s finest examples of an “unsupported” staircase,

CITY OF ST. JUDE ON FAIRVIEW AVENUE The City of St. Jude gained national exposure during the Selma-to-Montgomery march for voting rights in March 1965. Biscuits still going strong The Montgomery Biscuits, the minor league baseball team that plays its home games at Riverwalk Stadium, earned its nickname in a contest. The team started play in 2004, and this season marks the Biscuits’ 10th as a member of the Double-A Southern League. In 2003, the team’s owners had a Name the Team contest and received about 2,500 entries. A local attorney entered Biscuits based on his intramural softball team from law school. The name received more boos than cheers when it officially was unveiled. Since then, fans have grown more attached to it. The Tampa Bay Rays are Montgomery’s major league parent club.
The Montgomery Biscuits take the field at Riverwalk Stadium.
The team has enjoyed good attendance as well as on-the-field success. The Biscuits won Southern League championships in 2006 and 2007. Dozens of former Biscuits have reached the major leagues, including the 2008 American League Rookie of

TRI-COUNTY ARTS GROUPS Alabama Dance Theatre: An honor company in the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association, ADT combines professional and student dancers in a number of performances. Dance styles range from classical ballet to modern and jazz. Annual productions include “Mistletoe,” a holiday-themed show, and “Celebration of the Season,” a spring gala. At “Stars on the Riverfront” each summer, ADT showcases its dancers at various levels in performances at the city’s amphitheater. The year’s biggest productions are staged at Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts and the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre. Alabama Center for Traditional Culture: Created in 1990, the group is dedicated to researching, documenting and preserving the state’s folk cultures. Schools get building, technology upgrades The River Region is home to four public school systems — Montgomery, Elmore and Autauga counties and the city of Tallassee — as well as more than 30 private schools. The area’s largest school system is Montgomery Public Schools, which educates more than 31,000 students in more
than 50 schools. In Autauga County, education officials expect nearly 10,000 students to report to the 14 schools in the local public education network when the 2013 term starts in August. The school system employs about 1,100 professional and staff employees and is the largest employer in Autauga County.
The transportation department is expecting the arrival of 33 new buses to help rebuild the system’s aging fleet, and new firewall protection added to the systemwide electronic networking system will allow teachers to do some work from their homes. Pine Level Elementary School and Marbury Middle School now have new
roofs, at a total cost of $1 million, to replace those that had been leaking for several years, and $50,000 more was spent on repairing minor leaks at other schools. In neighboring Elmore County, the public school system educates more than 11,000 students in 14 schools, one technical center, one alternative
school and one academic and behavioral intensive treatment center. The Elmore County Public School System also has seen capital improvements in recent years to accommodate a growing population. Renovations recently were made to almost a dozen different schools. Several schools in the
Wetumpka area also have had major technology upgrades, including video surveillance servers and the purchase and installation of more than 500 computers across the district. The Tallassee City Schools system also is located in Elmore County. It has three schools and educates more than 1,900 students.

Large military presence covers tri-county area The Montgomery region’s military presence covers all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as the Alabama National Guard. The Army and Marines also have recruitment centers, with reserve units in the city as well. The 926th Engineer Brigade, an Army reserve unit, and the Lima Company 3rd Battalion, a 23rd Marines infantry reserve unit, are based in Montgomery. The Navy and Coast Guard have recruitment centers in the city also. Employing more than 23,000 people combined, the Air Force and Alabama National Guard make up the biggest military presence in the area. MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, GUNTER ANNEX
Maxwell Air Force Base is the only Air Force base in the state and is home to the Air Force’s intellectual and leadership center, Air University. Maxwell and

Gunter Annex employ about 10,000 people, which include military, civilian and contract workers. The base also is home to the state’s only Air Force Reserve unit, the 908th Airlift Wing, which has about 1,200 members. It houses seven C-130 cargo planes as well as maintenance, operations, security forces and medical personnel. The unit conducts regular humanitarian missions and also deploys in support of worldwide operations. The 908th also responds to hurricanes and other disasters when asked by the Air Force. Air University is the Air Force’s center for professional military education. Air University also includes the headquarters for two commissioning sources: Air Force Officer Training School and the Air Force ROTC. The Community College of the Air Force, the largest community college in the country, has its headquarters at Gunter Annex.

The Alabama National Guard has its headquarters in Montgomery and includes Army and Air Guard components. Together, the Alabama Guard has more than 13,000 soldiers and airmen, as well as civilian employees. About 1,350 Air National Guard members are in the region, including about 1,000 at the 187th Fighter Wing at Dannelly Field, and the Army Guard has about 1,700. Guard units statewide deploy regularly for overseas operations and also respond to statewide emergencies. The Alabama Army National Guard’s 131st Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, 151st Army Band, 22nd Recruiting and Retention Battalion, and 62nd Troop Command are all in Montgomery.
Nestled in the center of Alabama, the River Region also is considered to be in the middle of the Southeast. Located some 200 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, the River Region has a temperate climate where winters usually are mild and the growing season is long. The average temperature is 61 degrees, and the area usually receives about 55 inches of rainfall a year. There can be extremes in high and low temperatures, but long cold snaps are a rarity. Data from the National Weather Service show the warmest month on average is July, with an average high of 92 and an average low of 72. January is usually the coolest month of the year with an average high of 57 and an average low of 36. The area normally enjoys eight hours of sunshine a day, and the growing season is 210 days per year. The region generally is considered to be in the geographic center of the Southeast, and elevation ranges from 150 feet above sea level in Montgomery County to 554 feet in Autauga and 745 feet in Elmore counties. Winters typically are short and mild with hard freezes rare. Even in the
middle of winter, it’s not unusual to have days where the high temperature flirts with the 70-degree mark. Snow is a rarity in central Alabama. The area averages less than threetenths of an inch of snow each year. Due to the Gulf’s influence, summer means high, sometimes stifling, levels of humidity. During June through September, temperatures show little change from day to day. Summers typically see afternoon highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s. The area is prone to severe weather, including strong thunderstorms and tornadoes. There are two distinct seasons for severe weather, March through May, and then another round in November. Not surprisingly the periods of severe weather most often occur during the changing of the seasons, with spring being the most active period. Being this close to the coast, tropical systems often make an impact. Hurricanes, and even tropical depressions, can dump vast amounts of rain over the state. Winds associated with the storms can be a factor as far north as the Tennessee line.

Northington St. This center houses the offices of the Department of Leisure Services and has meeting rooms, a kitchen and an auditorium available for rent. Easy Street Park: 233 Easy St. This small neighborhood park features children’s play equipment. Kiwanis Park: 1136 Perrydale Loop This is a neighborhood playground. Jasmine Trail & East Poplar Park: This park is located in the Silver Hills and Brookstone subdivisions. It provides muchneeded green space for these residential neighborhoods. Mac Gray Park: 1050 Martin Luther King Drive; 361-0523 This park, which is adjacent to the Autauga County Fairgrounds, has lighted softball fields and a concession stand, and is the home of adult softball teams. Lewis Gillespie Senior Center: 332 Doster Road; 361-3698 or 358-3232 This center serves as a nutrition site and features games, crafts, dances, exercise classes and day trips. Overlook Memorial Park: 299 Jay St. A section of Overlook Memorial Park was set aside for the Butch Ray Fragrance Garden, which features plants and shrubs that can be identified and enjoyed by their odor, thus giving those with limited or no sight an opportunity to enjoy the garden. Pavilion available for rent. Pratt Park: 460 Doster Road Located in the “heart of old Prattville,” this park features a small pond, a walking trail, an amphitheater and picnic tables, and is adjacent to “A Child’s Place” playground. Pratt Park is the site of numerous community events. A barbecue pit and two pavilions are available for rent. Pratt Park Pool: 256 Doster St.; 365-0251 This pool, which opens in May, is home of the Flying Fish Swim Team. Hours: noon-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2 per person. Kids younger than 3 get in free. Family pool passes are available for $120, and the pool is available for rent. Spinners Park: 390 W. Sixth St. This park features a playground, ball fields, grills and picnic tables, and is the site of the annual Spinners Pumpkin Patch Arts and Crafts Festival

The pavilion and community center are available for rent. Wilderness Park: 800 Upper Kingston Road In this park, giant oriental bamboo soar 60 feet to form a canopy in the sky. The bamboo competes with native trees and shrubs to form this most unusual area, which also contains the state’s second-largest Beech tree.

Memorial Park: 120 Cotton St. This park offers picnic and play areas, the Scout hut, a covered barbecue area and tennis courts, as well as Fain Community Center. The barbecue area and the community center are available for rent. Gold Star Park: Behind Wetumpka City Hall on the banks of the Coosa River This park features a ramp for launching boats into the Coosa River, picnic areas, a gazebo, the Elmore County Museum, two historical log cabins, a stage for performances, and several rustic bridges and walkways. Henry Crommelin Park: At the end of Bruce Street in the Meadowbrook subdivision This park offers tennis courts, a playground and a softball field. Swayback Bridge Trail: Just north of Jordan Dam, off U.S. 231 This trail along the banks of Lake Jordan is a popular destination for hiking and biking enthusiasts. Markers are installed along the path, and a map on the entrance board helps guide visitors. Wetumpka Sports Complex: Coosa River Parkway/Alabama 14 This newly-opened facility features five baseball/softball fields, batting cages and a concession stand area.

A paved walking track encircles the park. Kids Kingdom: Across from the Village Green This unique play area was designed by elementary schoolchildren and was paid for and constructed by volunteers. Girls Softball Complex: On Park Circle This complex offers four softball fields for the Millbrook Girls’ Softball League. Robinson Springs Park: On Monument Drive A three-acre park with an underground spring, a fountain, a gazebo and tables with benches. Legacy Park: On Deatsville Highway near the Elmore Water Tower This park has a paved walking path and a lighted practice field for the Millbrook Mustangs

MARRIAGE Couples who want to get married in Autauga County must go to the probate office, 176 W. Fifth St., Prattville. 3613732. Licenses cost $48. Elmore County residents should go to the Elmore County Courthouse at 100 E. Commerce St. in downtown Wetumpka. 567-1142. Licenses costs $43. Acceptable identifications are a passport, military identification, state-issued identification or driver’s license. If people do not have those forms of identification, they must bring a certified birth certificate and a Social Security card. There is no waiting period, but they must get married within 30 days of obtaining a license. No blood test is required. If one of the people had a divorce within the past six months, that person must show a copy of the divorce papers. In most cases, if either person is younger than 18, both parents must be present to sign a consent form.

RECYCLING MILLBROOK The city’s recycling center is operated by the street and maintenance department, which can be contacted at 285-3653, and is located just behind the tennis courts, near the fire station on Grandview Road. The city recycles newspaper, plastic, cardboard and aluminum, but not glass.
PRATTVILLE The city has a drop-off for recyclable items at 122 Ridgewood Road, which is just behind the old Gurney plant on Martin Luther King Drive. Prattville residents who present their current water bill listing sanitation charges also may bring their yard debris and garbage to the Recycling Facility only on Saturdays when sanitation personnel are on-site to facilitate the drop off. The center accepts aluminum, paper, plastic, steel or tin cans and cardboard at the site. People are asked to deposit the recyclables into the
trailer at the site. Food items, grass clippings and other perishable items should not be deposited in the recyclables trailer. The sanitation department can be reached at 361-3611.

OTHER STATE AND LOCAL INFORMATION Purchasing liquor: In Alabama, a person must be 21 to purchase alcohol products. In recent years, Montgomery approved the sale of draft and Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages at retail stores. Sunday sales remain banned in Autauga and Elmore counties. Purchasing tobacco: A person younger than 19 cannot purchase, possess or transport tobacco products. Littering: Littering is a misdemeanor with penalty — $250 for first offense and $500 for second and subsequent offenses. Weapons: People wanting to obtain a handgun license can do so at their county sheriff’s department. According to state law, you must live in the county for which you get the permit, but once you have it, it is valid statewide and in other reciprocal states. Autauga County residents should go to the sheriff’s office in the courthouse to acquire a permit. Call 365-3211. Elmore County residents can apply for pistol permits at the sheriff’s office, 8955 U.S. 231 in Wetumpka. Applicants must be 21 to apply for a permit. Applicants should bring their picture ID. ROAD RULES Licenses: To register a motor vehicle or get a vehicle tag in the state of Alabama, go to the probate court office in your county. Elmore County: 100 E. Commerce St., Wetumpka; 567-1139. Autauga County: 176 W. Fifth St., Prattville; 361-3732. Seatbelts: All front seat occupants of a passenger car manufactured with safety belts in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 must wear a safety belt when the vehicle is in motion. There are exceptions for medical reasons, mail carriers, newspaper carriers, vehicles made before 1965 and vehicles that operate in reverse. Any child younger than 6 must be in an age-appropriate child passenger restraint system. For children 4 or 5 years old, that system includes seatbelts installed by the manufacturer, dealer or owner of the vehicle. Helmet laws: It is unlawful to operate or ride on a motorcycle in the state of Alabama
without a protective helmet. Teens and driver’s licenses: There are several restrictions on the issuance of driver’s licenses to drivers younger than 18. They are: A person younger than 18 can not apply for a regular driver’s license until the person has held a temporary instruction or learner’s permit for six months. If the applicant is 16 years old, he/she must submit verification of a parent or legal guardian’s approval and verification of completion of at least 30 hours of behind-thewheel practice or a state-approved driver’s education course. Anyone issued a driver’s license who is both 17 and licensed for less than six months or 16 years old shall have a restricted license. With a restricted license, a teen cannot operate a vehicle if there are more than four people in the car, not including a parent or guardian. The licensee also cannot drive between midnight and 6 a.m. unless a parent, guardian or a licensed driver older than 21 is along, or unless he/she is driving to or from work, a school-sponsored event, a religious event or in an emergency situation. Traffic offenses: According to state law, traffic violations are classified as misdemeanors unless otherwise stated by law. The penalty for a first-time misdemeanor traffic offense is not more than $100 or 10 days in jail; for conviction of a second offense committed within one year after the date of the first offense, the driver can be fined up to $200 or imprisoned for up to 30 days, or both. For conviction of a third or subsequent offense committed within one year after the date of the first offense, the punishment is a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment of up to three months, or both. For felony traffic convictions, the driver can be sentenced to not less than one year nor more than 10 years, a fine of up to $5,000, or both. DUI: A person can be arrested for DUI if his/her bloodalcohol level is .08 percent or more, if he/she is under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, or both, or under the influence of any substance that impairs mental and/or physical faculties enough to render him/her incapable of driving safely.
