ILLUMINATING

CHANGEMAKERS 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

We are grateful and humbled by the stunning legacy of former executive director Michelle Kinder and excited about the future. Momentous Institute works side by side with children, families and professionals to ensure that children can build social emotional health. Through our work in education, mental health, training and research, we focus on strengthening children’s abilities to understand and manage their emotions, reactions and relationships. We focus on building the social emotional wellbeing of our community by working to ensure that all children can achieve their full potential. Through community-level outreach and advocacy, we seek to challenge structural inequities and elevate the voice of community members. As each individual already possesses the capacity to heal within themselves, so does each community. To that end, we are ready to walk with, witness and provide encouragement to our community to ensure that all children can develop social emotional health and contribute to an equitable, sustainable community in the future. With gratitude for your support and partnership,

Jessica Trudeau

Jeff Barnes

Executive Director

Chairman of the Board, 2017-2018 Salesmanship Club of Dallas member since 1990

For 99 years, Momentous Institute, the nonprofit owned and operated by Salesmanship Club of Dallas, has been dedicated to changing the odds for children. The organization has championed the impact of social emotional health—

the ability to understand and manage one’s emotions, reactions and relationships —since the beginning. The heartbeat across Momentous Institute’s therapeutic services, school, research and training is to see all children reach their full potential.

THERAPEUTIC SERVICES

With social emotional health, we see RESILIENCE. Momentous Institute’s Therapeutic Services team works with families using a strengths-based approach to resolve conflict, process trauma and manage stress. Therapeutic Services include family therapy, small treatment groups, parent education and Huddle Up — a program aimed at helping youth improve self-control, problem solve and strengthen communications. Momentous Institute’s therapists work to provide families with tools to prioritize safe relationships and self-regulate emotions.

Others told me he was a bad kid and I was a bad parent. At Momentous Institute, they simply said, “How can I help you?” That made me feel at peace with happiness and self-confidence.

Anna, Momentous Institute client

80% of children with an identified social, emotional and/or behavioral challenge significantly improved their functioning. 87% of children who completed Huddle Up middle school programming demonstrated improvement in their executive function skills.

PARTNERSHIPS

With social emotional health, we see RELATIONSHIPS. As the effectiveness of social emotional health continues to gain attention, Momentous Institute has had the opportunity to deepen over a dozen partnerships with organizations across the nation, including schools in Memphis, Tennessee, Dallas Independent School District and Bonton Farms. Rigorous research is utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of these partnerships. Given the sustainable changes seen in children and families as a result of strengthening social emotional health, Momentous Institute will continue to invest in partnerships locally and nationally to reach far more children than the organization could ever serve directly.

We have to heal the soul before we can move into the academic component. The only way to heal the soul is through intentional relationships and authentic love.

Martha Bujanda, Principal, Marsh Preparatory Academy

RESEARCH

With social emotional health, we see INNOVATION. Momentous Institute is passionate about investing in research. Each year, Momentous Institute follows Momentous School students’ long-term trajectories and tracks improvements in the social emotional health of therapy clients and parent education participants. To prove that work in social emotional health is a game changer, the research team has published three multi-year studies in peer-reviewed journals. The team has two goals: 1) to evaluate the impact of Momentous Institute’s direct work with families, and 2) to look deeply at why social emotional health works so it can be shared with other schools and organizations.

We study the connection between self-regulation and dual-language skills in children...15 years from now or 20 years from now, these children will hopefully be our leaders.

Raul Rojas, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, University of Texas at Dallas

MOMENTOUS SCHOOL

With social emotional health, we see OPTIMISM. Momentous School, founded in 1997, is a laboratory school located in the Oak Cliff community of Dallas that serves children ages three years old through fifth grade. Using decades of research, Momentous School weaves rich social emotional health experiences into a rigorous academic curriculum.

They really want to see children grow both in and out of school. Even when I graduated high school, there was constant support.

Jovana, Former Student

Our 7th annual Changing the Odds conference, Belonging: Because Together We Are Better, welcomed more than 1,345 attendees who learned how to create spaces of belonging for those we work with and remove the dividing lines that too easily separate us.

“You do not need to be a therapist to be therapeutic.” Brenda Jones Harden

“The measure of our compassion is not in our service to the wounded, but in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them.” Father Greg Boyle

During conference breaks, Georgette Dunn led attendees through multiple exercises that energized the audience and provided multiple mindfulness strategies to include in any classroom or work environment.

Momentous Institute’s annual Changing the Odds conference features top thought leaders in the fields of mental health and education. For two days, a line-up of keynote speakers share their expertise, stories and research to help inspire and challenge educators, mental health professionals and decision makers to unify in changing the odds for all children.

The more we learn about developing the whole child is critical. It’s rare that you leave a conference inspired to take action. Changing the Odds is one of those. Eric Lindh, Project Transformation, CEO

TRAINING

With social emotional health, we see OPPORTUNITIES. Momentous Institute offers a slate of trainings year-round that specifically focus on sharing social emotional health practices with educators and mental health professionals. In 2018, to expand our reach and add to in-person trainings, Momentous Institute launched a set of 10 online trainings for educators that walk through tangible strategies for implementation in any classroom.

We have been able to bring new strategies to families we serve. When you have children, parents and teachers working together, it’s a game changer.

Alicia Norman, Principal, Perea Preschool, Memphis, TN

Together we

TRANSFORM lives. Since 1968, the AT&T Byron Nelson, hosted by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, has raised over $160 million to benefit Momentous Institute. In 2018, the tournament played at its new home in Southern Dallas at Trinity Forest Golf Club. The Salesmanship Club has worked to build deep relationships with community members and organizations year-round through strategic initiatives that move far beyond the game of golf.
