Momentous Institute was founded by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas in 1920. After 100 years of service, we look to the future with excitement, determination and hope that in 100 years our community and communities across the nation will ensure that all children can build social emotional health and have equitable academic outcomes and well-being. For children, particularly those experiencing trauma and adversity, we know that social emotional health is the linchpin that allows them to effectively navigate challenging circumstances and live fulfilled lives. The unprecedented circumstances of 2020 have been ripe with challenges and opportunities. As we move through a global pandemic and a nationwide dialogue on reforms to end structural racism, we believe that social emotional health has never been more important. We know that long-term sustainable transformation will not happen by Momentous Institute alone or the nonprofit community alone. But rather with all segments of our society – the corporate sector, faith community, public school systems and government. Together, we will achieve this vision. 100 years ago, Momentous Institute was established to create transformational change for children and families. This holds true today. In times of calm and times of crisis, Momentous Institute has been and will continue to be an anchor for children and families.
1920
Momentous Institute, founded by Salesmanship Club of Dallas, launched a recreational camp to create a safe and welcoming haven for orphaned children.
1932
The camp changed its focus to walk alongside children and families facing poverty across the city of Dallas.
1948
Momentous Institute's camp at Woodland Springs became the nation's first year-round therapeutic camp for children, allowing families to access more services than ever before.
1965
Momentous Institute’s Camp Director Campbell Loughmiller published “Wilderness Road,” which inspired the creation of similar camps throughout the country.
1981
After decades of work with families, Momentous Institute realized the need to integrate education and mental health. The Education Center, Momentous Institute’s first venture into education, opened in Dallas for 4th - 8th grade.
1987
Momentous Institute added a family therapy program and staked its reputation in Dallas as a nonprofit with an unwavering focus – to see all children achieve their full potential.
1997
Momentous Institute continued to expand its reach for social emotional health and opened Momentous School for children, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
2012
The Changing the Odds conference was introduced along with the creation of multiple new training opportunities for educators and mental health professionals.

Momentous School Momentous School is a laboratory school in the Oak Cliff community of Dallas which provides pre-kindergarten 3 through fifth grade education. Based in decades of research and smaller classroom settings, Momentous School weaves experiences in social emotional health with a rich curriculum. Eligible students are those who qualify for a free or reduced lunch.
