editor’s note

Hello Seattle!

I have decided that I want to start by letting everyone know what my, and our, aims are with MODE Magazine in the coming months, and, hopefully, years. We don’t want to tell Seattle anything. We aren’t here to dictate. This city has a special and unique flavor that is all its own. We don’t want to mess with that, critique it, say that it isn’t good enough. I hear from plenty of people that Seattle needs to step-it-up, do a better job, dress nicer. And while I am not disagreeing with those sentiments in some regards, I do disagree in others. I greatly enjoy that I can go to a symphony in Seattle in jeans. Granted, in my case, it is nice jeans with a button down shirt and a jacket, but even this is almost overdressed in some cases. But that is something I appreciate about Seattle. Whether I dress down to go to a symphony, or dress up to go to a restaurant or bar, no one here is critiquing or judging based on it. Likewise at work. We get to dress almost however we want almost anywhere we work in this city. Very few other cities in the United States enjoy this level of freedom and leisure in this regard. However, what we do want to do is educate and expand on what this flavor and freedom includes. We want to show Seattle that there are additional options, new ideas, constant change and growth, and that these ideas, which you already apply to your work, play, living, fitness, leisure and everything else in your life, you can also apply to your fashion and style. We want to introduce you to local designers and retailers providing what you already love and buy from big box stores. We want to show you what those big box stores are providing from outside of this region that no one locally brings. And we want to demonstrate how easy it is to make changes, whether dressing up, dressing down or rebuilding an entire wardrobe. And, of course, along the way we will give you our opinions and recommendations based on what is going on locally, nationally and internationally. We just hope to do this without making it sound like we as a city aren’t good enough at fashion. We are actually terrific at fashion. Our fashion. But most of all we want to keep it simple and have fun! We here all hope to see you in the coming months as we fill these pages with ideas for you to discover and explore!

Our Favorite Accessories and Beauty Products for Winter Weather

This piece will definitely get you style points!

Written by Sable Talley

I’m not a huge fan of chilly weather, but since my superpowers haven’t fully developed enough to control the weather yet, I must endure these winter months the same as everyone else. But I plan to do it in style, of course.

Statement Pieces

All I can say is “Yes, ma’am!”

My style is clean, sharp and classic with a pop of color or a strong statement piece. This B.P. Statement Necklace from Nordstrom is definitely a staple in my wardrobe giving my look a touch of sass.

Satchel Handbags

Hair Moisturizer As a woman of color, moisturized hair, especially in the winter months, is an absolute necessity. I’ve been using Olive Oil Incredibly Rich Moisturizing Hair Lotion™ for years now to protect my hair from breaking off when the weather cools down.

Just what I need to tame my mane!

I love a sturdy handbag. I usually like to get a new bag every season that will surely go with each look. The Lady Two-Tone Lockbox Satchel from Charming Charlie is the perfect size for any woman wearing multiple hats who doesn’t have time to dig for her phone every time she casually drops it in to her bag.

These shades scream, “I have arrived!”

Sunglasses Just because summer’s over doesn’t mean the sun’s on vacation. On those very few clear-sky Seattle days, don’t forget to pack your shades. These Gold Aviator Sunglasses from Express will be the finishing touch for all of your winter looks.

Mascara I’ve never been one to pile on the makeup (except for freshmen year of high school when I was obsessed with my grandmother’s blue eyeshadow), but I’ll spend the necessary ten minutes to brush on some foundation and define my eyes with my favorite mascara on the planet, Great Lash Lots of Lashes® by Maybelline.

IMAGES COURTESY OF EXPRESS.COM, MAYBELLINE.COM & SALLYBEAUTY.COM

Perfect for those windy downtown afternoons!

Make your eyes pop with perfectly defined lashes!

Hair Ties I’m all about letting my hair blow in the breeze, but every now and then, a girl’s gotta tie up her hair, roll up her sleeves and get a little dirty. DCNL Animal Elements Assorited Hair Elastics from Sally Beauty are not only strong enough to contain my mane, but I love the fun prints that show off a tiny bit of my wild side.

shopping bag

ON THE HUNT FOR...

Written by Sable Talley

IMAGES COURTESY OF SHOESOFPREY.COM

I’m very particular about my shoes. I love channelling my inner Victoria Beckham a la “I can’t concentrate in flats”. I also understand the value of shoe shopping on a budget, but still treating yourself every once in a while. I normally make two large shoe shopping trips a year, one for spring/summer and the other for fall/winter. During the warmer months, I’m all about bright colors, open toes and the occassional flat (just to keep them from wearing out). The cooler months are usually filled exclusively with platformed booties since they’re easy to strut in and still keep my feet warm. Earlier this month, I’d been tempted to do a little shoe shopping when I remembered a post that I’d seen in my Twitter feed a few months ago. It was for a Australia-based company called “Shoes of Prey”. I watched this video and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “There’s a company that lets you design your own shoes?!”, I thought. I definitely had to check this out, especially since it’s the holidays and my feet would look amazing in some new booties custom designed by me (which is the best excuse I came up with to tell my husband when I showed him the website).

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a fashion designer of any kind, but I can definitely appreciate a finely crafted piece of clothing or accessory. So having the opportunity to design my own shoe seems thrilling, but also challenging. Here’s how it works. The Shoes of Prey website is equipped with a 3D designer to help you fully customize your shoes. Once you’re done designing and purchasing your shoes, they are shipped to you within four weeks. First, you choose the shape of your shoe. With twelve shapes to choose from, you can go with easy flats, wedges, stilettos and even oxfords. Next is choosing your colors (the task I’m sure will prove to be the most challenging for me since I’m a graphic designer and know that simple ROYGBIV colors don’t cut it in my line of work). Finally, have your shoes shipped to you anywhere in the world within a month. If the shoes don’t exactly match your style, you can return them within the year for a full refund or have them remade for free.

or do I want to have them as a solid staple in my wardrobe that I can just slip on a go? This year has been a crazy rollercoaster of ups and downs for me, but looking back it was definitely a year of learned lessons. So in celebration of everything I’ve learned, not only about myself, but also about how I want to contribute to the fashion industry, I’d like some special occassion shoes to wear to the most glamourous of events. Be sure to follow us on Tumblr for an update on my design process. For more information about Shoes of Prey, visit shoesofprey.com or you can visit the Shoes of Prey Design Studio at Nordstrom Bellevue Square!

Before I start desiging my shoes, I want to have a specific theme or goal in mind. Do I want these to be shoes I only wear on special occassions modeisfashion.com

street style

Downtown Seattle Written & Photography by Erin Reddick

Seattle is known for it’s style all year round and the average street goer is pretty chic and fabulous. This fall season is no exception as we witnessed these show stopping side walkers! Just out to lunch, headed to shop or meet with a friend, Seattle has BIG BOLD COLOR on the scene! Take notes on these go-to pallets such as rose red and chocolate brown, or the classic black on black. Don’t be shy when pulling out that jacket from last year, and layering it with your new one. To be prepared for any kind of weather, light jackets and hooded vests are ruling the fashion scene. We are loving the street style here in Seattle so don’t forget to show us yours @modefashionmag and #modestreetstyle! 14

What a whirlwind this fashion show season has been! With all the new trends on deck, how will we ever decide what to wear every day? Well, we have you covered with the best looks from New York Fashion Academy, Fashion First Seattle and Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection sure to get you styled perfectly for this crazy Seattle weather.

NEW YORK FASHION ACADEMY SHOW September 12, 2015 | New York Fashion Academy, Ballard, WA After a long day of meetings (and shopping), photographer, Erin Reddick and I made our way to Ballard to attend the 12 th annual New York Fashion Academy Fashion Show. The show, hosted by the school, is the final hurdle for graduating students ready to make their mark in the fashion industry. With a line quickly forming outside of the school, we made our way in and took our seats in the press section. The show featured twelve student designers and included video intros to describe their inspiration for their collections and even thank-yous to their supportive friends and family. Student designers included: ETRA by Hope Kendall, NEILA HUMAN WHERE? by Whitney Forguson, Biscayne by Erin Hubner, JRBG by Shaunn Siekawitch, Meg White by Meg White, Arrow by Angelisa Mozzone, Tony Tahkeal by Kyle Tahkeal, KEWi by Kristina Winch, Harmon House by Teresa Harmon, Blue Torch by Tsigereda Tekle (Titi), ZAFRAEL by Daniel McBriar and TALIS by Alex Gustavson. As I sat front row center, I had a chance to really examine the detail and craftsmanship of each piece. Some looks displayed simple drapes of fabric while others detailed finely crafted sewing techniques. And just when I’d lost hope of any menswear fashion, the final designer, Alex Gustavson, presented his collection of ultra modern looks for today’s man.

FASHION FIRST SEATTLE September 18, 2015 | Showbox SODO, Seattle, WA

To celebrate its 12th annual show, Fashion First Seattle developed the “12th Year, 12th Man” theme to further promote the event. Tying the event to the muchloved Seattle Seahawks was a no-brainer for the Fashion First team who produced a promo video featuring a model dressed in undies and shoulder pads flaunting a colorful ponytail and posing for the camera (see video here). Sponsors included presenting sponsor Shane Co., SkinCeuticals, The Art Institute of Seattle, Canopy Blue, Samuel Hubbard, La Ree and The Brik. The show kicked off with an exclusive VIP pre-party where attendees could sip on themed drinks, participate in the silent auction and enter for a chance to win jewelry from Shane Co. The show then featured an energetic live auction raising $102,000 to benefit Crescent Moon Foundation and Inspire Youth Project. After the auction, the runway shows began with collections from La Ree, Annette Dresser for J. Hilburn, Intermix, Shane Co., The Brik, Elizabeth Jane, Ragamoffyn’s, Elizabeth Roberts, Canopy Blue and David Lawrence. The finale of the show featured custom Seahawks-themed designs from fashion students at The Art Institute of Seattle.

FASHION WEEK AT THE BELLEVUE COLLECTION September 23 – 27, 2015 | The Hyatt Regency Bellevue, Bellevue, WA

VARSHA BY VARSHA AGARWAL

I was lucky enough to receive a press pass to the 10th Anniversary of Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection. It also happened to be my first time attending the event so I had to make sure I was fully prepared to emerse myself in the awesomeness that is the Bellevue fashion scene. The five-day event kicked off on Wednesday night with the 4th Annual Independent Designer Runway Show. The show featured eight upand-coming designers showing their finished collections after six months of mentoring by the fashion week panel.

22

MODE Fashion Magazine

The featured designers included Cute Like Mad by Jeanette Svensk Li, Daniel Ressa by Daniel Ressa, Dawson & Deveraux by Sophie Karen, Dream Dresses by P.M.N. by Phoung Minh Nguyen, Iris Klein by Iris Klein, RO2 by Rana Ottaviani, VARSHA by Varsha Agarwal and Victoria Postolit by Victoria Postolit. This year’s board consisted of Bruce Pflaumer of Michael Bruce Image Consulting, Marj Turner of Fashion Group International, style editor Amanda Zurita of Seattle Met Magazine and fashion industry veteran Patricia Wolfkill.

DANIEL RESSA BY DANIEL RESSA

Before the shows, guests were treated to drinks and hors d’oeuvres in a stylish party setting with lush seating and beautiful illustrations by fashion illustrator Blair Breitenstein, a native of Mercer Island, WA. Taking my seat in the press section gave me a perfect view of the runway so I could get some snapshots of my favorite looks. I even found myself sitting next to Kim Peterson, correspondent for The Seattle Refined TV show and founder of Uniquely Savvy. From beginning to end, I was in complete awe of the level of detail

But I had to go with my gut and pick Dawson & Deveraux because those sequined dresses gave me life. However, the fan favorite award went to my third choice, VARSHA (my second choice was Dream Dresses by P.M.N.) Designer Phoung Minh Nguyen was chosen by the panel as the winner of the show with her wedding gown collection titled “Autumn Glamour” for its stunning beauty, creative

She received a prize package including $5,000 furnished by The Bellevue Collection and the Kemper Freeman family and the opportunity to have her collection featured in seven free-standing frames located throughout Bellevue Square. Designer Varsha Agarwal was selected as the Runner Up by the panel. She received a total of $3,500 in prize money for her collection. The show was also a fundraiser for Bellevue LifeSpring with 100% of the ticket price benefiting the non-profit organization supporting Bellevue families though food, clothing and education programs. The final event on Saturday night was the Front Row Fashion Runway Show presented by Vogue. Another sold-out show, Front Row Fashion featured fall trends straight from the glossy pages of Vogue with themes such as Endless Shades of Grey, Amazing Lace and After Dark. Seattle Children’s Hospital, the beneificiary of the Front Row Fashion Runway Show received 100% of the ticket price. In total, over $100,000 were donated to both Bellevue LifeSpring and Seattle Children’s Hospital. “Each year we strive to produce the best shows possible to support the beneficiaries that play such a critical role in our community and beyond,” says Jennifer Leavitt, Vice President of Marketing, The Bellevue Collection. “The funds raised at these two events go to two outstanding beneficiaries and we are proud to be able to continue our philanthropic culture of giving back to our community.” Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection also hosted many complimentary events in Bellevue Square such as Fashion Forecast with Rachel Zoe and Cara Crowley, FAB IN FIVE and Peek Kids Runway Show.

FROM DRIZZLY RAIN TO COOL WEATHER‌ WHAT DO YOU WEAR? Written by Angela Marino

IMAGES COURTESY OF URBANOUTFITTERS.COM

The Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable weather. The workday can start out in a chilly fog-ridden haze then by the time five o’clock rolls around it can warm up to 70 degrees. Overheating and the lack of comfort during after-work drinks is a common consequence of an unfortunate outfit choice. Layering is the solution to keeping cool and comfortable throughout the day. Sweaters run abundant with heavy knits but many of us overestimate the chilly weather in the dreary light of the morning routine because by lunchtime the sweater is weighing us down and making us wish the air conditioning was still turned on. Layering is key during this time of year when it is still a little too warm to wear a coat but cool enough that there is a brisk chill in the air. Layering is an important way to dress for any occasion to get the most out of any outfit. It is a coveted skill to learn in the Pacific Northwest, as the dicey weather can at times get the best of us. modeisfashion.com

27

Sweater Tanks. These are great alternatives to tip toe into fall while the weather is still not quite cold enough for your heavy knit sweaters. Sans bulky sleeves this look allows for a blazer or lightweight jacket. Once the weather heats up simply remove the jacket and you are ready for happy hour drinks after work on an outside patio.

This option, if paired with a long sleeved top, can make for an easy transition into a lighter outfit while still being office appropriate. The blazer vest can be fully buttoned and worn without any shirt underneath while giving a polished sexy option, or the blazer vest can be removed with a more basic outfit of top and bottoms. Either way, the outfits give a viable alternative for the warmer evenings.

Fitted Dress. A basic fitted mini-dress can double as a layer of insulation for the chilly mornings. The fitted dress can be paired with an A-line skirt. The large proportion of the A-line design with hide any indication that the basic top is actually a dress. When the clock finally hits 5 o’clock, simply pull off the A-line skirt revealing the fitted mini-dress perfect for an evening out. 28

Blazer Vests.

Layering Basics. Basics can be layered to give depth to any outfit but it can also be used as a practical approach to dressing. V-neck sweaters can be layered with a collared shirt to add an extra element of professional flare. Rethink your wardrobe in a way that adds not only more pieces, but also the ability to shed layers throughout the day to make comfort a top priority again.

Ponchos or Scarves. Many mornings we scramble trying to get to work on time and don’t have any extra seconds to check the weather. Running out the door and realizing there is frost already on your car as you stand in a pencil skirt is never a good start to a workweek. A simple way to add a layer of warmth when you are short on time is to pair an outfit with a poncho or scarf. This can easily be topped with any outfit without much thought.

Menswear Trends for Fall/Winter Written by James Pitts III

Recently between showing houses, I found myself observing the people around me. I noticed three things a significant amount of people had in common: tweed, suede and gray... lots of gray. I am going to assume that’s what in this season. Thoughts? Well here are mine about the three.

Hey, what’s up? I’m James F. Pitts III, but you can just call me “James”. I am a full time real estate broker, a wannabe outdoor adventure enthusiast (until I get tired, cold, or wet), a creative, a self proclaimed food glutton, and to my surprise, an attention hoarding, comical writer. I use the term “comical” because fashion has never been my forte, but hey, we must all start somewhere.

Tweed

Suede

From beards to fabrics, this winter, rough is in; and surprisingly comfortable. Originating from Scotland, tweed is a loosely woven wool with a reputation for being exceptionally durable, flexible, warm, and water resistant.

Some have suggested pieces made from this material are costume like or clownish, but this blast from the past is reappearing in the fashion world and this time it’s not just for assless chaps. Introducing: Suede. That’s right, I said suede. Suede interrupted spring, it separated the real stylist for the style-less, and it’s going to keep going right through this winter. Although seductively soft, stylish and fashionable, I personally consider suede the gremlin of the fashion world due to its conflict with water. When rocking suede make sure to take the necessary precautions to

The most familiar tweed garment for men is the jacket. Previously considered an outdoor or informal addition to the wardrobe, today’s style allows us guys mix it up a bit. Whether you prefer the grunge, rugged, metro or hip look, you will want to consider throwing a tweed jacket into the rotation this season.

protect this easily stained, absorbent material from the elements. The next time you consider adding a new shoes, gloves, jacket or skirt, consider suede.

Gray From grouchy skies to movies titles, this color keeps showing up all over and the fashion world is no exception. Although not the brightest color on the block, gray is a highly versatile color and its various shades can be paired with nearly every color in your closet, even pastels. When layering your grays, they seem to never clash and always play fair.

eattle is not a city that’s exactly known for dressing up. Perhaps this is attributable in part to the domination of tech companies and their relaxed standards for workplace attire. In general though, Seattle just feels like a rather casual place in most fields, especially compared to other cities. Take a stroll down our sidewalks on any given day and I can pretty much guarantee that you’re more likely to see someone wearing Birkenstocks than Balmain. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that Seattleites don’t like to glam it up every now and then. If you’re like me and tend to live in jeans, you might not be sure what to wear for that special occasion. Here are our tips:

1) Overall Look.

4) New Hues.

Aim for a long dress, some dangly earrings, a nice bracelet or cocktail ring and finish off the look with some strappy heels.

Darker colors tend to be more formal; however, don’t be afraid to try a lighter hue.

2) Show Off Your Stems.

5) An Alternative.

A shorter dress or skirt can most certainly be fancy, too— just make sure the length is tasteful. Dress it up with some jewelry—like a statement necklace—to really make it pop.

If you’re not a dress person, try a posh pantsuit or a tailored tuxedo and pair it with a red lip.

3) Try Different Fabrics. Some examples of fabrics to look for are taffeta, satin, jacquard, and organza.

For more contemporary ideas, you might consider browsing photos of celebrity looks from events like the Academy Awards® or the Golden Globes®. There are some absolutely stunning looks from the red carpet. If you’re feeling super uncertain about your formal wear though, err on the side of classic. Look to fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O, and Grace Kelly for timeless elegance. You might also consider consulting with a stylist or personal shopper to help you find that perfect look, fit and feel. Top off your ensemble with a long or mid-length coat during these chilly months—though it’s not unheard of in Seattle to see a hooded rain jacket over a sparkly New Year’s Eve dress! modeisfashion.com

or those of you who don’t know, I’m from New Orleans (well, the New Orleans area – explaining exactly where I’m from could take a while). Two years ago, when my husband told me that he made the decision to be stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington instead of staying at Fort Benning in Georgia, I was a bit hesitant to make the move. Not only was it two thousand miles away from both of our families, but I was seriously dreading the weather since up until that point, the only thing I “knew” about the area was that in rained a lot (thanks Grey’s Anatomy!).

WRITTEN BY SABLE TALLEY

We made the big move in April 2013 and of course, it took some getting used to, but I eventually got comfortable with the area. And the rainy weather wasn’t as bad as everyone makes it out to be. My only problem now was adjusting my wardrobe. In my opinion, New Orleans and the surrounding areas don’t really go through your typical seasons. I can remember many Christmas holidays wearing a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops outdoors. Plus, for the majority of the year, the air is pretty muggy which can ruin any daytime look (and hair).

I’ve definitely noticed the difference in the weather in Washington though. Not only with the rain, but I can actually tell when the seasons change. So back to my wardrobe, which mainly consisted of t-shirts and jeans at that point. Moving here definitely gave me a reason to up my game when it comes to looking decent before I leve the house. So here’s what I learned about developing my Seattle style: 1.

Check the weather before getting dressed; not just where you live, but where you’re going. It can be pouring down in Tacoma (where we live), but the sun’s practically dancing over the buildings in downtown Seattle.

2. Pack a pair of flats either in your bag or in your car. I’ll just say it: heels are hard to walk in. As glamourous as I feel with my favorite pair of pumps on, I have to be smart about how I’m getting around the city. You’ll definitely get where you need to go safer (and faster) if you have a pair of flats with you. 3. Try to incorporate a blazer or nice jacket with each look. I don’t know about you, but I love pairing a fitted dress with a blazer to keep the look feminine, yet professional. 4. Keep jewelry to a minimum. I’m all about glam accessories, but I also think it’s best to stick with one statement piece and keep the rest of your jewelry simple. 5. Keep up with hair maintenance. A lot of people don’t really consider hair when it comes to their overall style, but I like to think of my hair as my crown that finishes the entire look. Try out different styles to pair with different outfits. For instance, an updo may finish a look pefectly if more of your neck is exposed.
