S

pring is here which means new trends and looks being shown by all of the world’s fashion weeks. Unfortunately in Seattle we don’t officially have a fashion week anymore in the spring. So where do we find our inspiration? Well, we attend shows in Vancouver, Portland, Alaska and of course New York. Paris and London have a lot to offer us here in the Northwest as well. In fact I’d say London has such similar weather and culture that we should be pulling more from them. Luckily with big brands such as Nordstrom, REI and Eddie Bauer we can have those influences available to us. REI has inspired many NW fashion trends to the point we have been known as the flannel capital of the world. However, as this editor sees it, REI has so much more to offer than flannel. In fact, one of our spreads this month shows how REI has taken runway looks like vests and bright colors and made them into athletic wear that people can use to keep their Northwest comfort and still feel fashionable. I personally have always loved plaid and have seen a ton of it on the runways this year mixed with leather, chunky jewelry and denim. I tend to want to add more flair to my looks but that’s the best part of fashion, it’s you. It’s what you ant to feel good in. MODE loves to inspire but more than that we love to be inspired. Seeing how Seattle changes by seasons from boots and scarves (boy do we love our scarves here) to floral dresses and our best accessory, the umbrella. Whatever your idea of fashion, rock it and rock it to the point people wonder why they aren’t wearing what you’re wearing! For anyone who knows me I can go from glam to yoga pants in 3.5 seconds. Sincerly,

Larissa Long

MODE is Influence

Dawn Hunter Woman of Influence

This single mom shows women everywhere, you can have your cake and eat it too!

I

met Dawn about three years ago at the beginning of my pageant journey (yes, I compete in pageants). During this time I was looking for ways to “enhance” my beauty without cosmetic surgery. This is when I walked through the doors of Radiant Med Spa. The staff was phenomenal, the prices were reasonable and the place was very swanky. I know whoever was running the joint has to be top notch. In comes Dawn Hunter. She was blonde, beautiful and so friendly. We had an instant connection. After having a few procedures done from Velashape to facials I knew this was my spa of choice. Dawn agreed to sponsor me and the rest was history. Since then we’ve kept in contact doing promotional events together, attending parties and even blogging. Dawn was a huge inspiration for me to start MODE. She started a very successful blog called NW Beauty for which I was a contributor. It was great to learn so much about the beauty world and Dawn was always so willing to share her knowledge. Now I’m sure you’re wondering how a woman who owns and runs a med spa has time to run a successful blog? Honestly, I’m still unsure how she does it. On top of her busy work schedule she is a single mom to a beautiful little girl whom she adores. Seeing the two of them together is priceless. She really values her time with her daughter and I think it’s wonderful to see a thriving business woman make family priority and still succeed. The best part is she always does it with a smile. Dawn also volunteers much of her time to great causes like Queen, It’s a New Day where she offers free

services to women down on their luck to help them feel worthy. She is even currently on a huge project that MODE will be helping her with to find men, women and/or children with a physical disfigurement such as scaring or burns by providing free treatments to help with confidence. I have found Dawn always willing to help people feel beautiful because, like MODE, she understands to feel good inside helping the outside appearance can do wonders with small changes from the fit of your clothes to an eye brow wax, she wants everyone to feel beautiful. All of these things about Dawn are great but the characteristic I value most of Dawn’s is her strong mind. She is the first to break the blonde stereotype. Although always trendy and influential she does things her way and is never afraid to try something new. I attribute her success most to this quality. I love how she can still be beautiful, talented, and intelligent and still be strong-minded enough to take on a challenge. All of these things make Dr. Dawn a real woman of influence. If you’re interested in finding out more about Radiant Medspa services or how you can get involved in one of Dawn’s many projects stop by their new office in Lynnwood, or visit their Facebook page or website. hat do laser plasma, gun ranges and truffles have in common? A man by the name of W. Alexander Long, VP and cofounder of Stellar Photonics and founder of ÉLYSÉE artisan truffles. Mr. Long is a serial entrepreneur whose inventions include weapons for the military and inordinately delicious truffles. When he’s not in the kitchen expanding on his chocolatier skills, he is hosting a social event he calls “Guns and Truffles,” an alternate-quarterly gathering at a gun range to shoot guns and eat chocolate. MODE: Your company, Stellar Photonics, invented a

plasma shield for the military. Tell me more about this Plasma Acoustic Shield System. WAL: Laser plasma is a known concept; it was a matter of finding an application and delivery for it. Plasma is a highly heated state of matter. You use a laser to heat the air, to about 10,000 Kelvin in 4 nanoseconds. It creates a miniature fireball, a very transient event, and a pulse laser keeps it going. MODE: But this is non-lethal, correct? WAL: Yes. The goal is to make a large shield for protecting our troops. There are some physics problems that still need to be solved, but for instance

if there is a riot at a US Embassy somewhere, and you can’t use bullets to defend yourself, you pull up the vehicle carrying the laser on the scene and use the plasma barrier. It’s more of a psychological intimidation for the enemy. We are working with the Army and Marine Corps to develop non-lethal technology like this. Eventually all the things you see in the movies will become real. MODE: What kind of guns do you use at the range? WAL: Everything from a .22 to a full auto. There are instructors there to teach you about gun safety, how to hold the gun properly, how to deal with a jam, how to aim, how to breathe, and so on. MODE: What is your favorite gun? WAL: A Walther PPQ is my personal handgun. Just something fun. MODE: How do you feel about guns in schools? We should replace them with truffles, right? WAL: Well there’s a lot of violence on TV and in games, but we all grew up with that, some of us are affected and some of us aren’t. It takes family and personal responsibility. Parents want to offload that responsibility on the schools, and then they blame society for their kid’s behavior. But really, it’s your kid, you should raise your kid properly and spend time with them. MODE: Why do you now make chocolate?’ WAL: I did a lot of traveling to lobby and educate lawmakers on the merits of our project and why they should support it, and always asked the concierge where the best chocolate was. I found I was spending lots of money on these chocolates and they were not actually very good, just too sweet. If we can make plasma, we can make a decent chocolate. It’s a group effort. It’s all just process engineering. MODE: Do you have a lab at home? WAL: Well I have a commercial kitchen now, but I started my own home kitchen. My friends were my guinea pigs and gave honest feedback. Batches 1-50 were pretty terrible. There was lots of experimentation, lots of failing. Failing with very expensive ingredients. After 7 years it is finally good. I started making this chocolate for me, I’m not going to cut corners on myself. I want to provide good chocolate with the best ingredients. You aren’t going to be left with a buttery, sugary aftertaste. I can’t justify selling that to you.

There is a “bad” rich taste from too much sugar, which is where most truffles go wrong, and there is a “good” rich taste from high quality dark chocolate, which is how I make mine. MODE: Why did you pick the name ÉLYSÉE? WAL: I like ancient history, I actually want to go back to school to study archeology. Elysian is an ancient Greek term, and Elysian fields translates into Champs Élysée in French. My truffles are made in the French style, not too sweet. So I went with ÉLYSÉE for the name. MODE: What’s your most exotic ingredient? WAL: My friend has a rose farm in Ecuador, his roses are used on The Bachelor. He FedEx’s me petals. But I like to source locally when possible, in fact I’m going to be driving through Oregon soon to find a hazelnut farm. MODE: What’s next for you? WAL: It’s all about putting together a great team, PhDs, engineers, marketers, everyone. I’d like to make a faster ski boat, a better racecar. But next I will probably do high-end accessories for men, like watches, cufflinks, belts; somewhere between Lagerfeld and Armani. MODE: One last question: If you could travel forwards or backwards in time, where and when would you go? WAL: I would like to go back to visit the ancient Sumerians. It’s one of the earliest examples of recorded human history, their cuneiforms and clay tablets. Their mythology predates the stories from the Old Testament by a couple of thousand years. That’s why I want to go back and get my PhD in archeology, to find out where we came from as a society. There’s so much we don’t know. And maybe I could also find some more exotic ideas for my truffles. ÉLYSÉE will officially launch for the public on March 20th. The Finerie (www.thefinerie.com) and Aha Life (www.ahalife.com) will carry his truffles and macaroons. Take it from this writer: do yourself a favor, kick back with a glass of scotch, some bold red wine or a cup of coffee and start emptying a box of ÉLYSÉE truffles. Follow ÉLYSÉE on Twitter (@ ELYSEEChocolate) and Facebook (www.facebook. com/ELYSEEChocolates).

The Strength of a Horse

Editor: Linda Lowry Photographer: Brad Cole Writer: Kathryn Kimball Stylist: Tannya Bernadette Makeup Artist: Alicia Birkby Hairstylist: McKayla Storms Location: Woodinview Stables

C

helsie Bowden was born legally blind but never accepted that as an impossibility to overcome. She owns her own business as a massage therapist for both humans and animals. Riding horses was something physical that she could do as an alternative to a typical school outdoor activity in the vein of soccer and dodgeball. To visit her horse at the stables, she used to take King County Metro van for people with disabilities, but because of budget cuts there is no longer a bus route. Luckily, she has a friend who will drive her out to the stables. MODE: How did you get started with your business? CB: “I started riding when I was about 5, just taking weekly lessons. When I was 10 years old I saw a woman giving horse massages at the barn where I rode, and I was interested in that so she gave me a little lesson. Throughout my schooling I gravitated towards natural health care topics. I wanted to work with animals, but I didn’t want to be a vet. When it came time to picking a career, I remembered the lady giving massages to the horses. I realized that totally fit in with what I’ve always been drawn to, so I got licensed in human and animal massage therapy.” MODE: How long have you had this business? CB: “I got my license in 2007. I work on horses, dogs and humans. Technically I’m licensed for all big and small animals. I have a friend who goes to zoos and massages camels and giraffes.” MODE: Do you have any mentors, or anyone who inspires you? CB: “My mom has been a big inspiration. She’s always owned her own business, and had

the entrepreneurial spirit. She raised me to be independent, let me do things other parents wouldn’t normally do, like walk to the store by myself, that kind of thing. Not too overprotective.” MODE: What kind of horse do you have? What is her name? CB: “She’s a Quarter horse paint. Her name is Aria, which is a musical term for “beautiful melody.” It reminded me of riding, because it’s like a harmonious dance.” MODE: Do you have a guide dog? CB: “Yes, his name is Stockton! He is my second guide dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind based in San Rafael, CA. He's a 3 1/2 year old black lab who's full of personality. I've had him for 2 years. He helps me be an independent traveler and explore new places with confidence. He might be in a picture as we did a few shots with him included. Guide Dogs for the Blind is funded by private donation only and provides fully trained dogs for free. The dogs cost around $50,000 each for their training and lifetime care.” MODE: You were born legally blind, but what can you see? CB: “Basically, the closer objects/people are to me, the better. I can see color and shapes. When I ride I can see the shapes of other horses in the arena.” MODE: What’s your strongest memory? CB: I’ve been taking dressage lessons, and every week my instructor is saying we’re improving, which is an accomplishment I’m proud of. The hardest part is putting everything together without thinking about it too hard!”

MODE: How do you want to be remembered? CB: “A friendly optimistic go-getter! I’m not being afraid to follow what I’m interested in, even if it’s not the easiest thing, and sticking with it. Everything I’ve done has been towards that general goal, which is working with animals and natural health.” As if it weren’t enough of a challenge to run her own business and learn the complicated art of dressage, she’s training herself and her horse to ride hands free. This strength and independence appears to run in the family. Her mother and grandmother are both similarly inclined toward individuality and adventure: her grandmother, at 80 years of age, took a trip kayaking in Australia. I spoke with Chelsie’s mom, Charmel Bowden, who colored in more of Chelsie’s childhood. MODE: Chelsie tells me that you are her inspiration. CB: “It’s so funny she said that, because I’ve always told people she’s mine. She was born blind so she doesn’t necessarily have a full sense of her disability because she hasn’t known anything different. But she certainly had a lot of people who would say, ‘Oh, it’s ok, you don’t have to do that, we’ll do that for you,’ and she would always say, ‘I can do it myself!’” “I remember when she was 13 she wanted to ride horses in Maple Valley, and work there to pay for her lessons. I told her she needed to figure out how to get there. So she took a bus! I never told her this, but I followed the bus the first few times she went out, just to make sure she was getting on and off at the right stops.” “She was voted “Most Talented” in her high school class. She doesn’t have a sense of entitlement, she’s very respectful of what she has. She’s a good role model, a real inspiration for all of us. You can never have a bad day when you’re with her, she’s never in a negative mood.” “I was a single mom, but I had my family and friends that came around and stepped up to help and support us. My parents were instrumental in Chelsie’s upbringing. They always made sure she was exposed to life, to never believe that something wasn’t worth trying.” Ms Bowden is certainly living a full, spirited life. She is known as a ray of sunshine walking in the room, always optimistic and positive. You can learn more about her and the art of natural health by visiting her website: http://www. jkpersonaltraining.com.

Rules for the Distinguished Gentleman A guide to Greetings

T

he first impression is a lasting impression whether it is casual setting between friends, a professional meeting or a first introduction the gentleman is well suited to make a positive, and lasting, first impression. Knowing how to properly greet strangers with a good handshake, proper greetings and sincerity is a critical skill every young man must acquire before he can be considered a gentleman.

The Handshake

then, the simple handshake has not evolved much but in modern interactions is still holds a great significance. The proper handshake is simple. Right hand extended with the thumb up, grasp the hand firmly, but not too tight, three pumps in a vertical motion and release. That is the easy part, it is the rest of the greeting that men get wrong. There is an old joke where a psychologist is administering a test and asks, “What does a man do standing up, a woman do sitting down and a dog on three legs?”

Reports vary, but people could have been shaking hands Without hesitation, the man answers, “Shakes hands.” in ancient Greece as far back as the 4th or 5th Century BC. Soldiers, and later knights, would shake hands “That is correct,” the psychologist says. “But you to prove that they were not carrying weapons. Since wouldn’t believe how some people answer that ques-

tion.” The joke is not as funny now because most people do not seem to know that a man stands when shaking hands. There is no quicker way for a man to display that he does not understand proper etiquette than to remain sitting when shaking another man’s hand. Sitting while shaking hands sends the message that the other person is not important enough to give the most simple of common courtesies. On the flipside, standing to greet someone nowadays is seen as going the extra distance to give respect. Along with standing, a gentleman takes off a glove to shake hands. Like sitting, shaking hands with a glove on is a sign of laziness and lack of respect. Extreme situations, like meeting someone on the top of Mount Everest or at the South Pole, are excused but everywhere else it is expected that one will take the time to remove a hand covering. It is disconcerting that many people don’t seem to know that. A gentleman will endure chilly fingers for a few seconds to offer a hand in friendship. A handshake should be firm; it shows confidence, but not squeezing on the other hand like a vise. In the same way that the smallest dog barks the most, the weaker man tries too hard to display strength. When his hand is squeezed too tight, the gentleman lightly takes the other man’s wrist in his left hand, breaks the shake and reinitiating saying, “That isn’t right, let me show you how men shake hands.” It establishes that the gentleman is not easily intimidated and means that the python gripper needs to make up ground. It is a good way to start a business meeting with the upper hand.

Proper Greetings

“Hi, my name is…” is the way a gentleman introduces himself. It is also the perfect ice breaker. He might mix it up with a “good morning” or “good evening” but never a

guest and will act accordingly. Most people will appreciate it when someone, especially Americans, take the time to learn how to say even a few simple phrases in the local dialect. When visiting America, many people will appreciate the opportunity to share a few phrases from their homeland and a gentleman always tries to put others at ease.

There are a lot of flawed “bro code” ideas of trying to find a slick way to break the ice to be able to introduce yourself to a member of the opposite sex. But they miss the point. A quality man does not need to trick a lady into speaking to him and he wouldn’t take the risk of repelling Sincerity a quality woman by being pathetic.
