SCIENCE “ROCKS”

BIBLE CLASS

Hello Legacy Parents! I am having such a wonderful time getting to know your little ones. As they walk into the Science Lab each day, they immediately become such amazing scientists. I feel incredibly blessed that God has led me on a path to Legacy, as well as to educate and Tiffany Hinze Science excite your students every week. I love 1st-6th hearing that Science is many of their favorite subjects, and I pray that God guides me to foster that love of learning and investigation every day. I have truly enjoyed having many of you visit me in the Science Lab to look around and ask questions and I encourage you to continue to do so!

Greetings! My name is Kyle Jenison and I will be the new Bible teacher this school year! I have absolutely loved meeting all the students of Legacy K–8th grade. For the first week of Enrichment classes, I introduced myself, heard from each student something unique about them, and introduced the subject and direction for their grade.

1ST GRADE: This month, students will begin to explore solids, liquids and gases. Students will also become familiar with the properties of solids and constructing towers and bridges with them, as well as learning how liquids flow and pour.

Along with an exceptional Bible curriculum for each class, every classroom teacher has been provided with devotional material that will introduce and reinforce the Bible class materials.

The 3RD GRADERS will begin their year-long study of the life of Jesus with a special look at the events which surrounded His miraculous birth. The 4TH GRADERS will begin a careful study of the Old Testament from creation to the period of the kings. ¡Bienvenidos a un nuevo semestre de español! Welcome to a new semester of Spanish! It's lovely to meet the 2nd Grade students and to continue with the outstanding 3rd Grade. As a reminder, throughout the school year the students will be working on their Spanish units in their cuadernos/workbooks which remain in their desks for daily use until they are completed in class and then sent home. We begin the 2014 semester with the following units: 2ND GRADE: The first unit of our "El calendario"/ "The Calendar" cuaderno is a review of the days of the week that expands this vocabulary to express the dates of “today, yesterday, and tomorrow.” Next comes a review of the months of the year. Each month the students will create their own monthly calendars in Spanish used to reinforce this unit daily. We will also be learning “emotions” vocabulary in Spanish to our daily routine. 3 GRADE: Our first cuaderno will be "Clases de la escuela"/School Subjects. Our first unit is a review of the Spanish alphabet and vowels which we will use as we develop our reading and writing skills in Spanish. We will also be expanding our "school supplies" vocabulary and creating sentences using color adjectives and phrases with "I have” and “I need.” Thank you and welcome back! Gracias, Señora Leslie Coca 2nd and 3rd Grade

Fifth: I am so excited to begin the fifth grade Spanish curriculum with our "All About Me" posters. Students will be completing Spanish posters which will include their favorite things, birthday, age, name, school, etc. Students will have plenty of time to complete and decorate these posters. When these are done, they will be checked for grammar and spelling, then they will be laminated, and sent home to study. The students will then have about two weeks’ time to study these posters and present them orally in class. Sixth: Sixth grade students have all been assigned a Paso A Paso textbook. This is a high school Spanish I textbook in which we will be covering about three chapters. The first of these chapters in about Hobbies and Pass times. We will be practicing how to ask and answer the question "Te gusta? - Do you like? We will also learn some grammar in this unit. The grammar will include the verbs "ir" - to go, and "estar" - to be. I do not assign homework in sixth grade, but if your child comes home with a page of homework it is because he/she ended up with the class "elefante." This means that they were speaking English in Spanish class! Señora Grace Smith

COMPUTER ENRICHMENT Welcome back! I am extremely excited for this school year and the privilege of teaching our students about technology! KINDERGARTEN: We will be exploring the parts of the computer, and learning the basic functions of the mouse to help us better understand how a computer works. Then we will dive right in to using Microsoft Paint, to learn how a program works, and how each program has different features. 1ST GRADE: We will be reviewing the parts of the computer and Microsoft Paint. We will be extending our knowledge from Kindergarten to learn more features of Microsoft Paint, and will be learning what else a computer can do. 2ND GRADE: Students will be learning the features of Microsoft Word including font manipulation, inserting images, and formatting text. We will also be reviewing how to properly save and open our files.

Greetings from the Art Studio! With this year's school theme being "Back to the Basics," I thought it would be wise to start off with a brief introduction to aesthetics and art criticism. In addition to going over classroom rules and procedures, we will be playing a few games that teach how one may approach a piece of art. I will be guiding your student Christine Harris through the process of first Art describing, then analyzing, 1st-8th interpreting and judging a few famous pieces of art. In order to unpack the significance of master works of art and begin to comprehend the full richness of them, we must first consider a few things. For one, we want to look at the work in the context of its time. We want to gain a technical knowledge of the techniques involved so we can appreciate the labor and processes involved. We want in the least, a basic knowledge of the principles and elements of design so we can see what particular devices were used. I hope to open your student’s hearts to how they may begin to digest the works that come before them and gain a greater appreciation for both current work and work from antiquity. It will be an exciting year ahead with works planned in charcoal, acrylic, collage, wood, plaster, and watercolor. To get the creative juices flowing, I will start off the year with an open-ended assignment inspired by Marvin Bartel, a fellow art instructor who has developed a mature philosophy of art education. Their imagination will be the limit in this first week of creating! Mrs. Christine Harris

Your students will know the “in’s and out’s” of the computer, its parts, and its different functions. 6TH GRADE: Your students are off, full speed ahead with keyboarding lessons. THE GUITAR STUDIO Welcome back to school! I'm excited about this trimester of Guitar Instruction. The scope of our class includes sight-reading on standard notation and tablature, learning classic guitar melodies, collecting a catalogue of chords based on keys and applying those chords to songs the students will be familiar with. By the end of the trimester, the students will have a great foundation for further development on guitar and have a great text (Mel Bay's Guitar Method) to delve in further if they so choose. In September, our students have been learning the rudiments of music (note values, staves, rests) and how they are applied to guitar. In addition, they've learned a familiar tune, "Happy Birthday" and already started on etudes for the high "E" string. During this month, the students will also add 3 more notes to their reading as we get into the notes on the "B" string. Vocabulary for this month includes words like frets, string names, half notes, quarter rests, and tuning pegs. Mr. Ryan Foglesong Middle School

VIDEO PRODUCTION Video Production is a course that provides advanced instruction to filmmaking and video editing. Students will experience the process of videography and filmmaking from the inception of an idea to the completion of a project. They will have the opportunity to plan, write, direct, shoot, edit and produce videos using digital video cameras and computer editing software. Students will gain a greater understanding of advanced editing software, and learn how to create fun and interesting effects using the provided editing software. This class is a great way for the students to learn the basics of filming and editing digital video. The students have already begun work on their first assignment. They will be creating a short interview with the members in their groups that incorporate background music, titles, and transitions. This is a great assignment for the students to learn the software and organizing media on their computers.

Cory Gilbride Video Production Middle School

Throughout the semester, the students will be using iPhoto, iTunes, and iMovie. These are great applications, and the students will really be able to produce professional work using these tools. I look forward to seeing the student's projects, and how they incorporate their creativity and personality into their work. Mr. Cory Gilbride
