Great Pyramid Race 2013 The 2013 Great Pyramid Race has been run and won once again, but this time there was more than one winner.

Crossing the line first in the gruelling 12 kilometre race up Walshs’ Pyramid was Dave WOOD. Although the winner of $1000 Dave WOOD immediately donated the prize money to Steven Francis who was placed third. Steven Francis’ daughter Charli was recently diagnosed with cancer and requires on-going treatment. Dave Wood only decided to donate the prize money to Steve Francis after speaking with him before the race. Wood finished the race in 1 hr 27 minutes and 58 seconds, followed by John Grehan in 1 hour 30 minutes and 56 seconds and then Steve Francis in a time of 1 hour 31 minutes and 39 seconds. The day was extremely hot and this was evident by the eventual Wood having to be treated by the ambulance after the race for dehydration. In the womens event Andrea Hargreaves won the race in 1hr 45min 55sec, beating home Sue Crowe in 1 hour 48 minutes and 28 seconds followed and Lisa Conyers in 2 hours 10 minutes and 59 seconds. After 54 years the race continues to gain popularity BSA: 52012 and is part of the Australian Mountain Running Race Calender. Over 150 entrants competed in the race this year. Of course there was the usual carnival atmosphere on Gordonvales’ biggest day of the year. A crowd of over 4000 people enjoyed the entertainment and events organised by local community groups. Plans are already underway for the 55th Great Pyramid Race in 2014.

Woolworths coming to Gordonvale After a long drawn out battle the decision to bring Woolworths to Gordonvale has finally been decided with construction of the 3200 square metre shopping complex expected to commence soon. The Mulgrave News first reported on the issue in January 2011 and, after a long drawn out battle between the shopping giant, Cairns Regional Council and the Mulgrave Chamber of Commerce, the decision by the Planning and Environment Court has finally given Woolworths the green light to proceed with an application. The construction will be at the intersection of Draper Road and the Bruce highway on the Western side of the highway. This has disappointed many Gordonvale traders and the chamber of commerce as they feel it will be detrimental to trade in the town centre and take business from the town centre. Residents of the town have been divided over the construction with many residents on the western side of the highway in favour of the centre. The closest shopping complex to date is Mt Sheridan Plaza. The centre has promised to bring many construction jobs to the town and

High School Fundraiser This term, Gordonvale State High School P&C will be fundraising with Entertainment Books. The books are $55.00 each and with each sale $11.00 goes directly back to the school. Please support our school and assist us to raise much needed funds for a variety of school projects, including the 50th year celebrations of the school in 2015. Purchase an Entertainment Book and discover many valuable offers at leading restaurants, attractions and accommodations in and around Far North Queensland and as far South as the Whitsundays. I purchased the Entertainment book last year and I only had to use it twice to get my money back, as well as having had the opportunity to try different restaurants and activities. You can also send this link to your family and friends as Entertainment books are also available for most capital cities in Australia and New Zealand, hosting restaurants and activities specific to that region. Books can be purchased on line by accessing the link below. If customers would prefer to pay cash, they can do so with the correct money at the tuckshop and pick up the book at the school office. up to 200 full time and part time jobs when the centre is functioning. During an initial meeting Woolworths assured the chamber they would only complement the majority of the existing businesses and create jobs for local residents once opened and during the construction phase. Woolworths are currently advertising for expressions of interest in relation to leasing opportunities on their website: woolworthsshoppingcentres.com.au. Included in this expression of interest are 8-10 specialty shops including Medical, Liquor, Fast Food, Bank, Fashion, Cafe and Hairdresser.

More than Words & Numbers

The Joy of Understanding Local Business Guide

Leonardo da Vinci was famous for his paintings and drawings. He painted ‘The Last Supper’ in the 1490’s and ‘Mona Lisa’ in the first decade of the 1500’s. However da Vinci also studied the sciences during this time and was employed as an engineer who designed bridges and flying machines. As the national curriculum is implemented across Queensland schools, there can be a tendency for governments, educators and parents to focus more on subjects such as Mathematics, English and Science. However, da Vinci’s brilliance is possibly due to the balance between science & art and logic &imagination. Perhaps subjects such as music, art, languages and physical education are more than just pleasurable past times but can help develop our brain to improve our understanding of the world. “The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding”. - Leonardo da Vinci

Testimonial - Robyn’s Bowen Therapy “In general I am an active person, get plenty of sleep and eat well. But I do suffer from two things: poor digestion and pain in either my back, shoulder of hip; sometimes in all three areas. While I do not live in Gordonvale, I look forward to visiting and the opportunity to get a treatment from Robyn. Robyn's mixture of Emmett Technique and Bowen Therapy immediately relaxes me, and over the next few hours the pain eases and my energy level increases. The treatments have also helped my digestion and relieved my stomach aches. Robyn is passionate about relieving people’s pain and her caring gentle manner just adds to the experience. I’ll be visiting Gordonvale again in October so I have already made an appointment to see Robyn. While I'm not in pain now, I just want to keep on top of things.” Gay Marsden Kingscliff, NSW.

Pyramid Power Premiers Classic Beauty and Spa In a landmark day for Australian Rules football in Gordonvale, the local Pyramid Power Junior AFL Club won, not one but two premierships on the weekend.

After having steered both their Under 14 and Under 16 teams into the respective Grand Finals, the teams took to the field last Sunday to compete for the greatest prizes on offer for those age groups. The Under 14’s were the first to savour success when they defeated their rivals, Cairns Saints, by 14 points. The finals score saw Power 9 14 58 defeat Saints 8 6 54. Local boy, Lachlan Smith, won the John Hollander Medal for best on ground in a Grand Final. Soon afterwards, the Under 16 team took on the North Cairns Tigers. To the sound of the grandstands at Cazalys Stadium rocking, the Power boys defied their underdog status to win the club’s second premiership of the day. Final score saw Power 9 17 71 defeat Tigers 7 8 50. Djarragun College student, Jordan Toikalkin won the Bob Shaw Medal for best afield in a Grand Final. Earlier in the day the club’s younger age groups got into the spirit of Grand Final day with a roster of games to see out their own special year. Pyramid Power now proudly boasts 3 Premiership Cups and flags now, having added to their previous success in 2010 with the victorious Under 14 team. This club which comprises players from Gordonvale, Yarrabah, Djarragun College, Aloomba, Babinda, southern Cairns suburbs and more has now become a powerhouse of AFL football in the south, if not the entire region.

Gordonvale skate park closed for upgrade Cairns Regional Council advises that the Gordonvale skate park is closed to allow for upgrade works to take place. New ramps are being installed and the area is fenced off. For safety reasons, park users are not to enter the construction zone. The new park is expected to be complete in early September, weather permitting.

Gordonvale Turf Club Black and White Ball

Gordonvale Turf Club will be hosting their 97th Gordonvale Cup on the 5th of October over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

This year’s event is already shaping up to be a big one with record number of functions being booked for the race day. The Club will host its 3rd meeting for 2013 and after the two successful days held in April and May the day is shaping up to be another successful event for the Gordonvale Turf Club. In October the Gordonvale Turf Club has received the good news the Famous Poet Rupert McCall will be attending the day. Mr McCall will resight his tribute poem which he has written to honour the great racing champion Black Caviar. The poem was read out in front of more than 100,000 people at the Royal Ascot meeting in 2011 when Black Caviar took on the best of the best in England. The race day will also have the Kids area fun land once again featuring the Fun-E-Farm and also the Jumping Castle. This year the club will host the Black and White Ball which will be held at the track on Friday 27th of September. The Ball is held every 2nd year and once again the famous Fire Flies will be playing the music for everyone to dance the night away.

There will be also an auction of a rare piece of sporting memorabilia with XXXX Gold donating a framed 2013 Queensland State of Origin Jersey.

Tickets can be purchased for $85.00 from clubs president Cameron Riches. The Gordonvale Turf Club will also host its annual Calcutta the night before the CNW Electrical Wholesalers & Samios Plumbing Supplies Gordonvale Cup. The Calcutta will be held at the track on Friday 4th October and will kick off at 6:30pm. There will be a BBQ and the bar will also be open. Club’s President Cameron Riches believes this year’s Gordonvale Cup will be one of the biggest in history for the club. Mr Riches said its amazing amount of talk there has been around Gordonvale and outside Gordonvale. People are talking about travelling from Brisbane and as far as Sydney to attend the event. It’s going to be a beauty Cameron believes. Anyone interested in attending the 2013 Black and White Ball or the Gordonvale Cup can find more information on the Gordonvale Turf Club Facebook Page or by Contacting Club President Cameron Riches on 0427 999 121 or cameron@richesgroup.com.au

Gordonvale resident turns 100 years of age

(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Mrs Rita (Margherita) Poglio (nee Ghidella) turns 100 years of age on September 7th 2013 and this is an excerpt of her life so far. The complete story will soon be available in bulletin form at the Mulgrave Settlers Museum. Rita was born in Ayr in 1913 and lived in a cane barracks with her parents, two uncles, 5 brothers and one sister. Her father had a job cane cutting in Ayr for local farmers for a few months. It wasn’t long before he heard news that land was being developed up north and a new mill (Babinda) was being built. So at the end of the cane cutting season of 1913, her father took the family by boat up to Cairns, where he purchased land at Mirriwinni. The family boarded a wagon train in Cairns, loaded with iron and timber to build a dwelling on their newly acclaimed piece of land. It was raining so heavily at the time, that the train driver left the wagon for them to live in, until they could build a hut. Their dirt floor hut was very basic and apart from the supplies they had brought, they made good use of the scrub timbers around them for the rafters. They had no electricity or running water. Rita’s mum had a wood stove and would cook and wash and clean for 4 men and at that stage 3 children, make her own bread and hand sew all Rita’s dresses, hats and do all the mending. Rita says she was a mighty woman. Rita’s mum also had her own remedies for different ailments. If Rita had a sore throat or a cough, her mother would take her socks off and put the socks around Rita’s neck. Rita remembers the stinking socks and says it seemed to fix the problem. After a few years they sold the farm they were on and bought a farm at Bucklands Road near Bramston Beach. Her father had just built a new cane barracks for the cane cutters and the 1918 cyclone blew it away. The family stayed another year and then decided to go back to Italy as Rita’s father was very disheartened after the cyclone, as they had lost everything. Rita was 7 and spent the next two years in Italy learning to read and write Italian. Her father then had a falling out with his two brothers and decided to return to Australia with his family. Rita was then 9 and went to Mirriwinni School and remarkably, could not remember a word of English.

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's update on all things Real Estate. Are we there yet? I think that the market is turning based on the huge number of enquiries, multiple offers and contracts coming through my desk for all types of properties from units, to land, large acreages and family homes over the past 3 weeks. The buyers are also from all walks of life including people relocating to the area with their families, retirees, first home buyers and local families wanting to buy something for their retirement down the track and utilise the property as an investment in the short term. There is definitely an up beat feel around the region with the announcement of the multi billion dollar Aquis Development proposal and with the Elections likely to change the political landscape for the region, whoever gets voted in, we may be out of the doldrums sooner rather than later. During the WW1 in 1918, all Italian men were required to front up at the police station to be placed in internment camps. The police would ask Rita’s mum “How to do you say in Italian come out?” But she would trick the policemen and say ‘don’t come out’ in Italian. Rita met her husband Ermenegildo on the bus that went from Mirriwinni to Babinda. They married on 12th February 1930 in Cairns and moved out on their own farm at Charinga south of Aloomba. They had 5 children, 4 girls and one boy. They lived in Moller Street for 7 years, and then got that house rented and moved out to Packers Camp on the corner of Redbank Road. Rita lived there for 25 years and after her husband died, she moved back to Moller Street. Rita still enjoys crocheting, knitting, bingo and the odd cent sale, is a member the Italian Club and still lives in happily in her own home. She has 19 Grandchildren, 30 Great Grandchildren and 6 Great Great Grandchildren.
